They are of high quality and low price. This does not seem to be to the liking of European fuel manufacturers - and claims regularly appear that due to "significant" differences in the requirements of certification systems, in engine design, operating conditions, etc., they say, "American motor oils are not suitable for European engines. The most surprising thing is that the following are not considered counter-arguments:

  • successful experience in operating domestic, European and Japanese cars with us;
  • successful operation of European and Japanese cars on American oils in America;
  • successful operation of European and Japanese cars on American oils in Europe.
Suffice it to say: in the States, easy operating conditions. But in reality, everything is not so clear. Let's remember how "good" it is to drive in a traffic jam? and cities like New York are famous for miles of traffic jams. And what about the resource of oils and the engine. "Bad oil", they change it every 5000 km. And the actual spent resource is approaching 10,000 km, which is common for mineral oil. Meanwhile, all (!) car manufacturers consider the urban cycle, constant movement at high speed, towing difficult working conditions for the car and recommend reducing service intervals.
What about the standards then? In 1994, the committee of car designers of the Euro Union - CCMC ceased to exist. The legal successor of this organization - ACEA, the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers, from 1994 to 1996 used the CCMC standards. By 1996, it developed its own requirements, and only in 1998 did new requirements appear, really dictated by changes in the design of engines.
Look at the date of introduction of the standards, the year of manufacture of your car and the "new" price of engine oils produced in Europe. Do you get the impression that you are being forced to pay money for something that you do not really need? the global increase in oil prices has led to an increase in the price of oils. However, firms reacted differently to this increase: for American oils, we can talk about a decrease in the percentage of discounts for wholesalers, which does not affect retail prices in any way. At the same time, European oils rose in price by an average of 20-25%.

On the Internet on forums, motorists very often argue which motor oils are better European or American? What is the difference? Let's try to figure it out.

Americans and Europeans have a different mentality, traditions in the maintenance and service of cars. In America, there is a strong habit of car owners to frequently change the oil in the engine of their car, somewhere in the region of 3000-5000 miles (4827-8045 km). Such a small interval was adopted a very long time ago, when only selective refined mineral oils were produced and there were no synthetic and hydrocracked oils. And car manufacturers and their dealers, as a rule, still adhere to this framework, because it is beneficial for car dealers. Which is actually very good for the engine itself, because the oil changes in it often, and the operating mode is relatively easy - highway runs, good quality gasoline, excellent roads without dust and pits.

In Europe, on the contrary, the competitive struggle of manufacturers for buyers has led to the fact that automakers began to increase service intervals up to 15-30 thousand km, bringing this into a competitive advantage for their cars. This required the ability of the oil to withstand long runs (Long life). Thus, Europe has chosen the path of production of full-ash motor oils, while in America medium-ash oils are the most popular.

This is due to the difference in oils in composition. In order for the oil to withstand high mileage without replacement, European oil manufacturers add more additives (detergents, anti-wear). Such oils have a high base number, high levels of zinc and phosphorus, respectively, and a high sulfate ash content. That is why many Russian motorists think that such oils are better, but do not rush to draw such a conclusion. This medal has a reverse side.

At present, base number (TBN) is no longer the basis for the quality assessment of oils. These TBN oil rating parameters were used about 10 years ago in lubricating oil quality assessments, and the TBN value was related to the sulfur content of the diesel fuel, not to the quality of the oil. A high TBN is practiced as a good marketing slogan for a Client who is not fully versed in oils, and not as a real superiority of oil over other oils. A high base number entails a high level of sulphated ash. What is sulfate ash and what are its consequences? It is formed during the combustion of oil. Ash is made up of oxidation products of organic metal compounds - oxides (eg BaO, CaO, MgO) and metal sulfates (eg BaSO4, CaSO4, MgS04). Excessively ash oil, during combustion, forms more ash, which, mixing with resinous substances, forms high-temperature deposits on the piston, rings, valves. Deposits on the piston and rings are dangerous in that they lead to increased wear of parts due to abrasive action on the friction surfaces. And due to the deterioration of heat dissipation, the pistons can melt or crack. Deposits on the rings contribute to the occurrence of rings in the grooves and, as a result, a decrease in compression and engine power, while the stuck oil scraper rings cease to function normally and oil consumption increases. Deposits on the valves prevent the valves from closing tightly, which also adversely affects the operation of the engine. Ultimately, this leads to burnout of the valves and loss of motor compression. In addition, high ash content can adversely affect the performance of spark plugs (short the electrodes), and also harms modern exhaust gas aftertreatment systems - catalysts and particulate filters, prematurely disabling them.

Currently, a more modern way to evaluate engine oil is the SAPS coefficient (SAPS - stands for sulfate ash, phosphorus, sulfur). All motor oils can be divided into three classes:

  1. Full SAPS, full ash oils, sulphated ash >1.0%,
  2. Mid SAPS, medium ash oils, ash within 0.5%-1.0%
  3. Low SAPS, low ash oils, 0.5% or less.

Modern classifications and OEM requirements impose restrictions on the content of sulfated ash in the finished oil. For this reason, lubricating oils, based on advanced technology and modern specifications, have the characteristics of low levels of sulphated ash and TBN - which in turn is not an indicator of low quality and low additives. The detergency of the oil is indicated by the content of neutral salts, and not by the base number TBN.

Neutral salts do not increase the base number in the oil and for this reason many modern oils are characterized by a low base number. Sulphated ash limits cause less sludge to occur as a result of combustion of engine oil (always depending on the condition of the engine, some oil is burned and deposits, sludge and soot are deposited on various engine components, a large amount of them can be the cause engine damage).

One of the elements of oil quality assessment is the results of engine testing, where the main quality parameter is engine cleanliness after testing (the less sediment and carbon deposits, the better). In practice, the reduction in TBN in used oil is small and it never occurs that the TBN drops to zero as a result of wear. Lubricating oil quality is affected by other additives such as dispersants, antioxidants, anti-wear additives and the quality of base oils. Evaluation of all constituents of a lubricating oil can be a quality parameter based on experiments in laboratories rather than on the value of a single parameter such as TBN.

That is why manufacturers of heavy equipment require that the motor oils used comply with certain API classifications and at the same time do not set limits on the base number, insisting only on monitoring its decrease during operation.

Another difference between American and European oils is due to the different structure of engines and their different heat loads. Different engines need their own viscosity of engine oil. Now in the world there is a tendency to reduce the viscosity of motor oils. The trendsetter in this matter are Japanese engineers and automakers. Honda and Toyota were the first to use the lowest viscosity 0w-20 oils in their modern engines. Ford has also long recommended low viscosity oils (5w-20) for their modern engines. Later, Mazda joined them with the release of a series of engines using SKYACTIV technology. The Japanese and Americans began to reduce gaps, increase the areas of engine parts under load to reduce pressure, began to make the bearing surface smoother (like a mirror), and less porous than in older engines. All these and other changes made it possible to switch to low-viscosity energy-saving oils.

In America, due to the design features of engines, more running oil viscosities are 5w-20, 5w-30, 10w-30 (HTHS = 2.6-2.9). Europe adheres to a conservative school of engine construction and still uses 5w-40, 10w-40 viscosity oils. Although in recent years modern motors have been created that require viscosities of 0w-30, 5w-30 (HTHS = 3.5).

Another difference between American and European oils is the use of different base oils. But this does not apply to all products. In Europe, until now, oil refineries, due to their technological equipment, produce a large amount of mineral base oils of the first (I) group and very few base oils of the second (II) group. Thus, Europe produces mainly I and III groups of base oils. Whereas in North America the situation is different. There is very little production of group I, they mainly produce the second and third groups. All this determines the choice of recipes for blending plants for the production of commercial motor oils. America practically does not use group I for the production of motor oils, otherwise a small amount of base I produced is used for the production of transmission and industrial oils. Thus, as a rule, in Europe, semi-synthetic oils are made on the basis of group I base oils, adding group III (from 18%) or IV (from 15%) base oils to it. And in America, for the production of semi-synthetic oils, oils of groups II and III (Synthetic Blend) or only group II are used. Such oils have a higher quality base (base), they are more durable, better resist oxidation.

Application of regenerated bases

The collection and purification of waste oils is very popular in Europe for economic reasons. It is much cheaper than buying crude oil. There are many companies involved in the collection and regeneration of used oils. In North America, there are also such enterprises and they produce oils from regenerated bases, including motor oils, but this information must be indicated on the canister for consumers, which cannot be said about European oil producers. It should be noted that in Europe, mainly regenerated bases are used for the production of industrial and gear oils, and for motor oils, only mineral and semi-synthetic ones. In premium, synthetic oil lines, for highly forced engines, such bases are not used.

It cannot be unequivocally stated that European oils are better or worse than American ones. It is necessary to consider a specific product, on which base oils it is made and which additive package is used. And select the oil in accordance with the manual for your car.
