A little faster and with less risk: test drive the Kia Rio X-line. Test Drive Kia Rio X-Line - a rare bird in our area Tests of Kia Rio x line

The Kia Rio X-Line hatchback is another representative of a fairly saturated market with a lot of competition. This made it difficult for Korean engineers to bring a competitive model to market. Today a lot is known about the car - prices, and, and. In order to understand how the model drives, we present to your attention Test Drive Kia Rio X-Line.

Kia Rio X-Line

The X-Line model is an off-road version of the B-class hatchback. The car is designed on the basis of the Kia Rio sedan for the domestic and Chinese markets. For this reason, we can make a well-founded conclusion that the car's handling is reminiscent of a Rio sedan. However, there are still differences between the new version and its predecessor.

Unlike its brother, the car is shorter, taller, and wider. To some extent, the increase in these parameters is due to plastic linings. The car got an enlarged one - it grew by 10 mm. The car has a different body, and also acquired elements of off-road style:

  • roof rails;
  • double exhaust pipe trim;
  • plastic body kit.

Already from the very beginning, the hatchback is equipped quite richly. At the same time, it is quite functional and allows you to transport large cargo, sacrificing the rear row seats. Compared to a sedan, it is slightly smaller, but as a result of the modified body, the five-door is more convenient in terms of parking.

Main advantages in motion

On the move, the hatchback and sedan have a lot in common. The use of other springs and shock absorbers does not greatly change the character of the car. As a result of the changes, the ride quality has improved. Cars with 15- and 16-inch wheels cope well with sharp-edged potholes.

As for sound insulation, the car cannot be called quiet. At high speeds the engine makes a lot of noise and roars. You can hear the pebbles knocking on the wheel arches, and the roof rails push the air apart with great indignation. For this, the manufacturer gets a minus. At the same time, the roof rails look appropriate on the roof of a car, although they make their contribution at high speed.

Driving the car is comfortable, the model is characterized by excellent handling. The steering wheel is informative, convenient, and has a pleasant shape. The on-board computer presents the parameters in a convenient format for reading. The city car copes well with the basic functions - acceleration, braking, demonstrating control accuracy and responsiveness. The suspension behaves well and overcomes various obstacles on the road well.

Many control functions are located in the multimedia display complex. A separate part of the functions is represented by standard buttons. The display displays information from rear view cameras and navigation. Mobile devices can also be connected to the multimedia system.

The climate system controls are located separately under the display. Somewhat lower are the connectors for external devices. There is also a small niche for small items and buttons for warming up the seat and steering wheel. The cabin has many different niches for convenient arrangement of small things

How to stay safe on the road

Engineers paid considerable attention to safety. The ABC system is equipped with a pedestrian recognition function and is capable of stopping the vehicle independently. The road lane monitoring system warns the driver that he is changing lanes without turning on the indicator. If necessary, the systems can be deactivated.

In the basic version, the car is equipped with a stabilization system, braking control in corners, and stabilization during sudden braking. All this together increases safety by controlling the driver’s mistakes.

Strengths and weaknesses of X-Line

The car has its strengths and weaknesses.

Advantages of the model:

  • rich equipment in the basic version;
  • spaciousness in the rear seats;
  • good acceleration dynamics;
  • pleasant external features;
  • convenient luggage compartment.

The disadvantages include the weak sound insulation, high noise level at high speeds, not ideal smooth ride. Perhaps a little too small clearance.

Summing up

In general, the Kia Rio X-Line is an organic model that creates a complete impression. Compared to its predecessors, the new product looks much more attractive, dynamic, and modern. We can say that the engineers did a good job presenting a competitive model for our market.

New Kia Rio X Line price which was announced in the fall of 2017 turned out to be a very attractive offer and may well compete with the domestic new Vesta SV Cross, which we have already written about. We won’t go into comparisons; soon the buyers themselves will determine the winner in this battle.

The Kia Rio X-Line is essentially an ordinary Rio hatch with an abundance of off-road plastic protection and minimal changes to the suspension, which made it possible to increase the ground clearance by 10 centimeters. A convenient and practical 5-door body, original appearance is unlikely to attract lovers of real off-road driving. However, modern and stylish summer residents may well be interested in the model.

Exterior of Kia Rio X Line is a copy of the Chinese model Kia K2 Cross. The Russian division of the Korean concern did not reinvent the wheel, but took a ready-made car from the neighboring market, especially since the X-Line and the Rio sedan have a common unit base. The regular hatchback (which is sold in China, but has left our market) received a plastic body kit, bumpers with silver inserts, a new radiator grille, and decorative roof rails. The rear part has its own original lights and a successful design with a large opening making the car as practical as possible.

Salon of the “off-road” Rio practically no different from the interior of a regular sedan. True, a different body shape made its own adjustments to the rear. Now, if desired, you can completely fold the rear seats and turn the car into a minivan. The quality of materials and their fit are, as always, at a very high level; in this regard, the models of this manufacturer can be given the highest score. A fairly decent wheelbase of 2600 mm will allow rear passengers to accommodate with reasonable comfort.

Photos of the Kia Rio X Line salon

The luggage compartment holds only 390 liters. Despite the deceptive appearance of the station wagon, this is a regular hatchback, which is 16 centimeters shorter than the sedan. These centimeters were cut off just from the back. If you completely fold the back of the rear sofa, you won’t get a flat platform, but the loading volume increases significantly.

Technical characteristics of Kia Rio X-Line

Ground clearance of 17 centimeters may not be sufficient for trips to our countryside destinations. However, this is all that Korean designers could squeeze out of the 16-centimeter ground clearance of a regular sedan. If you make the clearance larger, this means a significant rework of the suspension, a complete reconfiguration of the steering and the use of a lot of original parts that also need to be developed. In general, no one was going to invest serious resources in Rio X-Line.

Therefore, there are no surprises in the technical part, complete unification with the sedan. Front-wheel drive with independent MacPherson strut suspension, rear semi-independent suspension with a deformable beam. Electric power assisted rack and pinion steering.

The base engine is a 1.4 liter petrol unit developing 100 hp. and capable of digesting AI-92 gasoline. The engine with an aluminum cylinder block and timing chain drive has a double variable valve timing system and meets the most stringent environmental standards. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.

The more powerful 1.6 liter 16-valve petrol engine develops 123 horsepower and has a similar design. The motor is combined with a 6-speed. manual and automatic transmission. For a more powerful engine, a transmission is installed with different gear ratios, which significantly affects the dynamics.

By the way, if all trim levels of the previous generation Kia Rio had only disc brakes at the rear, today cheap versions have drums. This applies not only to the new generation sedan, but also to the Rio X-Line. Below are the mass and dimensional characteristics of the model.

Do you remember the times of the wild automobile boom: the end of the nineties, when a car, along with a mobile phone, became an everyday thing? Yes, old, and for one and a half to two thousand “cu”, but capable of moving. “Golfs”, “Passats”, “chisels” and “behinds” went to the people, and along with the hurricane growth of the business of delivering spare parts and selling auto organs from wrecked cars, a new word appeared - “tuning”. When the “youth audience” flocked to drive, as marketers now say, it turned out that many were no longer satisfied with just a car, which, lo and behold, is waiting for you at the entrance and is capable of moving itself. Everyone who didn't shave their beards wanted to distinguish themselves. “Blue tires”, wheels on spacers and everything like that, you remember. All this dregs was washed away by new high-quality cars on credit, when cheap trinkets combined with leaky sills began to look completely stupid. Now everyone understands not only that the shelf on the trunk does not add admiration, but also that there is such a thing - design. If it was created not by a designer, but by a welder, it looks like it won’t work out like Pininfarina.

The current Kia Rio is almost flawless: even for work, even to the country, even in a taxi. So good that it's boring? Don't you feel like being in a taxi? Yes, please - get professional tuning of such a class that with it the car would look two hundred thousand more expensive, if only it were easy to recognize the Rio sedan. The new Rio X-Line hatch has no more in common with the Rio sedan than Cinderella in the kitchen with herself at the ball. But they are just as close in everything except wardrobe and makeup.

The rear is the hardest part to recognize Rio as a cross-hatchback: the license plate is in its proper place, unlike a sedan, the dual silencer nozzle under the rear bumper deflector, and the silhouette with wheel arch extensions and roof rails leave no mention of boredom. On the side, moldings added passion to the lines, and at the front, the lower radiator mouth widened the lower corners in a rally-inspired manner. Even the ground clearance was beneficial - the compact visually added not only in size, but also, paradoxically, in sport.

Just remember: technically, this is still the same Rio - not a crossover or an SUV. No need to ask us to drive the X-Line onto a tank training ground and hang up the wheels. The drive here is front-wheel drive, there is a beam at the rear, and in general everything is the same as on a sedan. Almost the same. Because the sedan's performance is close to flawless for cars in its class. The X-Line drives a little less interesting on good roads. It's not as stable in a straight line, and its suspension isn't as well balanced for comfort and handling. There are no words, the car is of high quality, and there is nothing to complain about, but there is a difference with the sedan. And the most noticeable is in the maximum configuration on 16 wheels: since the bumps from speed bumps and potholes are harsher, and the rolls and squats on the front outer wheel in corners are greater in a raised and shortened car. On the base 185/65R15 tires, the X-Line rides much better. Especially on bad and slippery roads, on which the X-Line simply flies. Plus, standard tires are more harmoniously combined with the entire elastokinematics of the suspension when cornering on smooth asphalt, and they hold a straight line better, and transmit less vibrations and jolts to the cabin.

Lada Vesta SW Cross
Similar prices, more space inside, not as good on the go

The cross-hatchback is 30,000 rubles more expensive than a sedan with a similar configuration, and its trunk is 90 liters less. This is all the price to pay for style, beauty and ground clearance. There are not only external, but also practical advantages: the approach angles give more freedom on potholes and curbs, in a park the hatchback needs 15 cm less space, and the energy intensity of the suspension will allow you to have more fun driving on rough roads.

The configurations are similar to those offered for the sedan, with the exception of the basic Classic version, which does not include the X-Line. The hatch also comes with 100 and 123 hp engines. 1.4 and 1.6 with automatic or manual, and its “warm options” are just as complete - right down to heated rear seats.

TEXT: DMITRY SOKOLOV

Asians love to show off. So the Kia Rio X-Line shows with its entire appearance that it is almost a crossover. Well, then why did the ground clearance increase by only a centimeter? And where, if not all-wheel drive, then at least the off-road assistance button? I received answers to these questions even before I got behind the wheel of the new hatchback, and after driving it I understood why such a “sub-SUV” would be in demand

Kia Rio X-Line. Price: from 774,900 rub. On sale: November 2017

“We are not positioning the X-Line as an off-road model,” the head of Kia Motor Rus, Alexander Moinov, immediately dumbfounded me.

Here you go! Why then was it necessary to fuss with this whole garden with body kits, roof rails and suspension modifications, wasting a lot of time on this (only when running in the chassis and searching for optimal settings, the testers had to drive about a million kilometers). Wouldn't it have been easier to launch a regular Rio hatchback on the market, as was the case with the previous generation model?

But Mr. Moinov has an answer to this question: “Russia is a country of sedans. The Rio hatchback accounted for only 20% of our sales. We decided to think about how to increase this share, and the idea with X-Line was born.”

Excuse me, but didn’t this same model, only under the name K2 Cross, debut in China back in the spring?

“It was not we who borrowed the model from the Chinese, but they, having learned about our project, wanted to bring the same hatchback to their market,” product head Nikolai Merenkov stood up for his brainchild. “It’s just that the Chinese market is more important, and the local plant is a “donor” of many components for the Russian plant where Rio is made, so they had the K2 Cross earlier.”

One of the most successful angles of the new product. LED taillights are only available in the maximum configuration

I have often heard and read in press releases about cars “designed specifically for Russia”, which, before their launch on our market, had already traveled on the roads of Latin America, India or China. And the fact that the idea of Rio X-line was born in our country makes this model unique in its own way. At least, I haven’t come across such examples among foreign cars.

Rio X-Line has original bumpers with plastic imitation of steel protection. Compared to the sedan, the front bumper of the hatchback has LED DRLs and fog lights located differently.

“Before starting work on this model, we conducted a survey among Russian clients, and it turned out that they want mutually exclusive things,” Nikolay continues. “They need the car to be powerful, with huge ground clearance, all-wheel drive, and at the same time be inexpensive. But that doesn’t happen! Therefore, we did what Steve Jobs did - we offered the market not the product that customers demand, but one that they will definitely like.”

The double bell is not a handicraft chrome-plated nozzle that can be bought at any dealership. Here it is made of stainless steel and tightly welded to the muffler can

You'll like it, no choice! This confirms better than the results of focus group surveys the interest that the car aroused on the roads. As soon as we stopped in a busy place, people immediately came up and asked about the price. I don’t know who the marketers see as buyers of the Rio X-line, but the first people who became interested in the car were guys over fifty who came out with purses at the ready from an old Sportage with regional license plates. The starting price of 775 thousand confused them at first, but when it turned out that for the “off-road” package, which, in addition to linings and roof rails, includes an openwork glossy false radiator grille and a “double-barrel” muffler attachment, you need to pay only 30 thousand extra compared to the price of a regular Rio, they Their eyes lit up with genuine interest.

Glossy false radiator grille with a chrome border around the circle is higher than that of the sedan

If only they knew how great the Rio X-Line behaves on the road, the interest would be even higher! New springs and shock absorbers not only gave an extra centimeter under the bottom (although this is of little use off-road), but also made it possible to achieve an optimal balance between comfort and handling. The Hatch rides softer than the sedan, but it steers perfectly! I even became obsessed with the 2nd generation Focus, which for a long time remained for me the standard for comfort and handling among inexpensive cars. I am sure that after testing the hatchback, owners of Rio sedans will want to install the same suspension for themselves. This is not difficult to do, since all attachment points and mounting dimensions are identical for both models. You just have to do this at your own peril and risk, since, according to engineers, it is not clear how such a machine will subsequently behave in emergency situations. After all, the sedan not only has a slightly different weight distribution, but also different power steering settings.

On the highway the car pleases with its handling and comfort. The dynamics, considering the engine power, are also quite decent

It’s easier to trade in the old Rio and take the X-Line. And if I took the car for myself, I would take the “base”. Because against the backdrop of the wide black linings on the arches, even the maximum possible 16-inch wheels, which are only available in the top-end trim costing more than a million, seem small. Not to mention the 15-inch ones - on these hatchbacks they generally look as if a strong man decided to fit into a ballerina’s pointe shoes. So it’s better to take a simpler package and buy the “casting” yourself, and no less than 17 inches. With such wheels and correctly selected tires, you can get about another centimeter of air under the “belly” - the amount of space in the wheel arches allows you to squeeze in even the not-so-low-profile R17 tires. And the appearance of the car will immediately change - for example, on the Infiniti QX30, which is not much larger in size than the Kia, 18-inch wheels look harmonious, but try putting it on 16-inch wheels?

Due to the wide overlays, the wheel arches appear much larger than they actually are. Because of this, even the maximum possible 16-inch wheels for the Rio X-Line (the picture, by the way, is original: you can’t put these on a sedan) look small

We tested cars only in the “top” and “pre-top” trim levels, so I can’t say what the Rio X-line looks like with 15 “caps”. The choice of engines was also limited - only a 123-horsepower 1.6 and only a 6-speed automatic, but I really liked the way this combination drove. The car accelerates briskly, while the engine noise, which is clearly audible during acceleration, is barely perceptible during measured driving. Even at high speed in the cabin you can talk without raising your voice! For a public sector employee, this is so surprising that I even wondered if the test cars had been given additional sound insulation? By the way, the interior here is exactly the same as that of the sedan. It was possible to designate the X-line version with a nameplate on the steering wheel or dashboard, or change the color of the upholstery, but the creators of the new product decided not to do this - the buyer is primarily interested in how the car looks from the outside, and additional modifications inside would increase the price.

There is absolutely no difference in the interior of the hatchback from the sedan

However, this does not mean that the Rio X-line will remain so. Kia listens carefully to the market, and if it turns out that there is such a need, we will see a new interior and other improvements. It is also possible that more affordable versions will appear: for now, the starting level for the hatchback is the Comfort package. You can take the sedan in the Classic version and save 60 thousand by abandoning the audio system, heated front seats and steering wheel, steering wheel reach adjustment and central locking with remote control. But is it worth saving on your comfort? Considering that many representatives of the fairer sex are expected among X-line buyers, the demand for “empty” configurations will be small.

Only the most expensive trim levels have climate control, but even the simplest ones have air conditioning

Engine start button - a privilege of the top version for 1,024,900 rubles

The new AV media center is 60,000 rubles cheaper than a similar system with a navigator. And the navigation application here can be launched from a smartphone connected via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto

The trunk is noticeably smaller than that of a sedan, but the possibilities for loading it are wider.

The Rio X-Line should only be used off-road if absolutely necessary.

Driving

The car is easy and pleasant to drive, it is not afraid of bad roads, but it has nothing to do off-road

Salon

Everything is like a sedan, except for the trunk: it is smaller, but it is easier to stuff “oversized” items into it.

Comfort

There's plenty of rear legroom, more headroom than the sedan, but also narrow shoulder room.

Safety

Price

Only 30,000 rubles more expensive than a sedan with a similar configuration

Average score

  • Increased ground clearance, excellent suspension, quiet and playful 1.6 engine, relatively small surcharge for a package of “off-road” options
  • Massive linings on the arches “conceal” the size of the wheels, the inside is no different from a sedan, poor off-road capabilities

In the previous generation of the Kia Rio family, the fleet was replenished mainly by sedans; the share of five-door sales was only about one fifth. It won’t be enough, the Koreans decided. Therefore, when developing the fourth generation of Rio, it was decided to make not just a hatchback, but a crossover... Today, when the SUV form factor reaches new heights almost every month, this option is potentially more in demand.

True, the creators acted somewhat strangely. With all the “off-road” surroundings made of plastic linings and other decorations, the Rio X-Line rose from the ground by only a centimeter compared to the sedan. Objectively, in an urban environment, 170 mm of ground clearance is quite enough for almost any task. But the buyer loves numbers, and he sees, for comparison: the ground clearance of the regular Lada Vesta is 178 mm, while that of its direct competitor Vesta Cross is more than 200 mm.

In the Prestige version, the ground clearance is 190 mm. Previously it was 170 mm. The photo shows the difference between the early and current versions.

And here typically Korean workaholism kicks in. If there is a problem, it must be solved urgently, and not wait for years for restyling. The Rio X-Line suspension was promptly reconfigured and the ground clearance was increased to 190 mm in regular trim levels and 195 in the most expensive Premium - the difference of 5 mm is due to larger wheels (195/60R16 versus 185/65R15). Roughly speaking, at least two centimeters. It seems that for this purpose it is enough to simply install higher springs - and you’re done. But no! All suspension components have been redesigned. And the result is already on sale.

I am testing a Rio X-Line in the “penultimate” Prestige configuration with an automatic transmission. I won’t list the equipment items; it’s easier to say what it lacks to the point of “complete stuffing”: no navigation and keyless entry. All in all, this is all that a modern buyer can regret. But there is a heated steering wheel - this is my favorite option. The windshield is also heated - all owners will appreciate this in winter.

The buttons for heating the steering wheel and seats are located in the most visible place.

The interior is not particularly spacious, but I managed to accommodate all of my 197 cm height quite comfortably - which means that the Rio is suitable for everyone.

I drove the Rio X-Line for a whole week and... I won’t say anything special. Not because everything is bad, by no means! On the contrary: I believe that the Kia Rio is one of the best representatives of the B segment. I got behind the wheel and drove as if I had been doing this every day for five years. Rio does almost everything in a familiar and expected way, intuitively understandable.

Rio X-Line steers correctly, a little sharply. It always turns into turns absolutely neutral - I was unable to achieve any additional turns or front end drift. These are proper front-wheel drive manners. The suspension handles any potholes and protrusions in the road surface with a good margin. I even agree with the level of noise insulation: it’s stupid to expect silence in this class.

Rio X-Line does not lay claim to the laurels of a hot hatch, so the power plant copes with its tasks with dignity. The 1.6 petrol engine has enough power, although, of course, 126 forces and 151 Nm are not the ultimate dream. But the 6-speed automatic transmission is tuned well, it drops gears in a timely manner during acceleration, and does not forget to shift up when moving evenly. I would just like to work on the exhaust sound: when the revolutions exceed 3.5 thousand, the howl of the engine discourages the desire to exceed the speed limit.

The screen of the multimedia system does not impress with graphics, but it is easy to interact with the interface, the menu is logical, and there are no annoying freezes. Fans of recorders and other auto gadgets will appreciate the number of connectors: two 12 V jacks, 3.5 mm, AUX and USB.

All my quibbles with Rio can easily be attributed to subjectivity and personal anthropometric data. The armrest is a little low - the right elbow dangles in the air. The cup holders don't fit my favorite thermal mug. Mirrors are too small...

But there are two things that I will never accept. Firstly, this red color absolutely does not suit the car. It is not deep, there is no volume, and quite successful body shapes are lost. I would go with dark gray metallic or wet asphalt. Well, the standard rims seem too small in the massive arches, emphasized by plastic linings. The imbalance can be easily eliminated by simply installing a larger radius and a larger offset.

The folded backrest of the second row creates a small step. But for a budget car, the transformation of the interior is well thought out.

In the maximum configuration this is partly done. But I wouldn’t limit myself to half measures: if I were the future owner, I wouldn’t spare 20 thousand rubles for a set of black wheels with an 18 radius on a low profile and with a correctly selected offset. I love cars that have personality.

Verdict

I could sum it up by once again drawing attention to the good combination of price and quality or the increased ground clearance. But something else is more interesting. Within a week, the updated Rio X-Line managed to make such a good impression on itself that I seriously thought about purchasing it. True, not for myself - my wife!
