Then the motor will begin to deteriorate due to harmful deposits accumulating in it. In this case, cracking of the seals in the motor can be noticed.

If mineral oil is used, then such deposits will peel off and come out gradually, but if synthetic oil is used, deposits, due to its high fluidity, will be washed out all at once, which can be dangerous, since the oil receiver mesh can simply become clogged because of this.

This is truly an endless topic for heated discussions. So a person bought a boat motor and immediately it comes to oils that are better to be poured into it. The need for reliable lubrication and heat dissipation from the internal parts of the engine is the main function of engine oil. No one argues with this and this fact does not cause any doubts. But few people think that the task of cooling the engine is also assigned to the oil, and not just to the water in the cooling system. Engine oil is, if not the main, then without a doubt a very important coolant in the engine!

Water has access only to the outer jacket of the cylinders and the engine head. To the crankshaft and liners, as well as to the piston rings, water is simply not allowed in due to the design of the cooling system. Engine oil, on the other hand, circulates inside and is in constant contact with engine parts. The oil takes on thermal energy from the piston crown, crankshaft journals and liners, piston rings - these are the points that carry the main heat load and the temperature here is much higher than the "average" temperature indicated by arrows or numbers on the dashboard.

About the quality of oils.

Since the quality of lubrication of almost all modern oils is at a fairly high level and is beyond doubt, such a concept as oil resistance to high temperatures comes to the fore. And here, just for the consumer, differences begin in conventional oils (used in a car) and in oils for special equipment such as outboard motors, motorcycles, snowmobiles, etc.

What happens inside the engine of a boat motor?

The most common problem of modern engines is coking of piston oil scraper rings and, as a result, after a while we have oil consumption. Oil scraper rings simply do not work, they do not fulfill their direct function - removing oil from the cylinder wall, because they are coked and have lost the ability to move in the groove. Look carefully at the oil scraper ring on the piston in the figure, it is the lowest. It simply cannot do its job, and the oil drain holes are also clogged. The reason is the thick composition (coke) into which the engine oil has turned. It can be argued that the natural wear and tear from the operation of this ring is minimal or non-existent. In other words, while the oil performed its functions and did not turn into soot, "immobilizing" the oil scraper ring, the engine did not consume oil (it did not enter the combustion chamber).

Let's take a closer look at the next photo. Before us is the case of a four-stroke engine, with decent oil consumption. According to the owner of the motor, he used oil of a well-known brand, perhaps a fake one came across, we won’t guess, but the fact is in front of you.

Why is there oil consumption? How to avoid it?

The photo shows that the pistons do not have natural wear (wear is minimal), the surface has a factory notch, there are no strong abrasions and nadir. But the oil scraper rings are simply - simply "lie down". The oil drain holes are completely clogged. In this case, the compression rings are in perfect order. Still would! There is more than enough oil to lubricate them, because it is not delayed by the oil scraper ring and passes straight through the compression rings (lubricating them abundantly) and further into the combustion chamber. Such a four-stroke outboard engine happily consumes liters of oil, more than a two-stroke. If you bring such a motor for maintenance to a service, they will measure the compression - the indicators will be excellent, better than on a new one! Servicemen will do maintenance and let you go on all four sides, there is nothing to complain about, nominally according to the service manual, all work and measurements have been done, all indicators are normal. And at this very time, the motor simply “eats” oil ... One could raise the issue of a guarantee, but this is a separate story ... So before us a typical case when the oil simply could not withstand the thermal load in the area of ​​the piston rings.

Numerous studies of modern internal combustion engines have proven that the engine will operate with virtually no wear as long as the oil "works" in it. Just look at the tests of the engine of a car that has passed 1 million kilometers in the factory laboratory, after which it was disassembled and examined. There was practically no production of basic parts, such as pistons, liners, rings. This shows that a good quality engine oil actually lubricates and keeps the engine at a level that ensures minimal wear.

But what happens when regular oil from an auto shop (maybe a well-known brand) works in a boat engine? Its properties have not been investigated in this particular engine. It is not known how well this oil corresponds to the thermal operating conditions of this outboard motor. The oil retains visible properties, but at the same time it imperceptibly decomposes, coke, loses the additive package, does not withstand thermal stress and causes further problems, such as ring sticking, as in the picture above. At the same time, on the instruments showing the temperature of the engine, you see quite normal readings ... There is no overheating! The main problem is that overheating is already there, it's just local. Coking oil has done its job long ago. While the water temperature sensor in the engine records the normal operating temperature, we observe on the device, in fact, the "average temperature in the hospital" and make the wrong conclusion that everything is fine with the engine ... at a time when some "hospital patients" already in the morgue.

How to avoid problems with coking and further troubles? You just need to follow simple recommendations.

The outboard motor runs at a different speed, two to three times the speed of the car when driving (car) on the highway. The operating environment of the outboard motor is different, this is prohibitive humidity and increased loads, which impose increased requirements on the quality of the oil. The movement occurs under load, the resistance of the aquatic environment counteracts the thrust of the engine of the outboard motor much more than the rolling resistance of the wheels of the car. Therefore, the point of changing the gear oil is not so much in oil wear due to mileage and wear, but in diagnosing the gearbox and its internals of your outboard motor. Imagine, when replacing, an emulsion instead of oil merged. You can still save the gearbox by flushing and there is at least a chance to save the assembly. It must be understood that the operating conditions of the outboard motor are different from normal conditions, for example, the operating conditions of a conventional car.
