From time to time, every motorist faces the question of choosing his next car. If you need off-road qualities, comfort and spaciousness are important, frequent long-distance trips are planned, then, in addition to more famous brands and common models, the SsangYong Rexton will certainly come into view. We understand the most common problems in the operation of the second generation of this SUV.

Interest in this car is due to the fact that for relatively little money you can get a real frame SUV. To date, the price of a three-year-old Rexton varies between 750-850 thousand rubles. The choice is limited to options with XVT and xdi diesel engines, AWD and parttime transmissions, an automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual. There are also petrol versions, but their share is much smaller.

Few people know how Rexton was born and appeared, where its roots come from, to whom it should be grateful for the appearance and to whom for the filling. At the end of the last century, the Korean brand SsangYong decided to produce a large SUV, and in order not to reinvent the wheel, it struck up a relationship with Mercedes-Benz. The Germans took power units, gearboxes and geometry. ItalDesign studio worked on the exterior and interior. The fruit of the work in 2001 was the Rexton line with licensed gasoline and diesel engines, which has been present almost unchanged in a number of markets, including Russia, for 13 years now. For all the time, the car has experienced two upgrades, in 2006 and 2013.

Four years ago, our colleagues from the Buy an Auto magazine already talked about what you need to be prepared for when choosing a used Rexton 2. This time we will summarize the experience gained in practice in operating cars in Russian conditions, including copies of domestic assembly.

The first, easily removable proprietary trouble is the destruction of the washer reservoir. It can already leak at 20-30 thousand kilometers. For a long time, tanks were installed from the factory, which tended to crack in the area of ​​\u200b\u200battachment to the body from vibrations. If the previous owner has not changed it yet, then it will cost you 2.5-3 thousand rubles. Branded parts supplied as spare parts are already reinforced in problem areas and carry out their service properly.

Also programmed troubles include sour handbrake cables. Even light off-road with shallow puddles can lead to such a breakdown. Replacing the parking brake cables will cost from 2.5 thousand rubles, and if you need to replace the parking brake pads, be prepared to pay another 3.5 thousand.

Suspension and steering elements in the conditions of the Moscow Region do not wear out very rapidly, but by 60 thousand kilometers it is often necessary to replace steering tips and rubber bushings of stabilizers and stabilizer struts, all together it will cost 4 thousand rubles.

Do not rule out trouble with the power steering system during cold weather - it breaks the hose at the outlet of the steering rack. The reason for this is the working fluid thickening in the cold, clearly not designed for Russian frosts. There is only one correct way out of this situation - replacing the fluid with a better one from any eminent company, preferably on a synthetic basis.

Second-generation SsangYong Rexton diesel engines are equipped with overrunning alternators - a solution often found on BMW and Mercedes-Benz engines. The clutch allows the massive generator rotor to rotate freely after the engine stops, and also partially hides the uneven operation of the engine, which is designed to extend the life of the generator and the auxiliary drive belt. However, the overrunning clutch itself may require replacement already at 70 thousand kilometers. The first symptoms of its failure are the whistling of a slipping or wet belt. Further, tapping is added to this sound, which may be present at idle and disappear at higher ones. This already speaks of the catastrophic wear of the overrunning clutch, and one must be prepared for the fact that the generator will soon cease to perform its functions. The clutch itself on Rexton 2 will cost 1.5-3 thousand rubles, at the same time, for preventive purposes, the generator is recommended to be defective and, if necessary, change its bearings.

Particular attention during the operation of the "Korean" must be paid to the lower ball bearings of the front suspension, the design of which contains a kind of time bomb. The fact is that the supports on the Rexton work to break (in the classic Lada, a similar solution has been spoiling the blood of their owners for 40 years). It is difficult to say what made them resort to such a technical solution on such a heavy machine. However, if you do not catch signs of the imminent death of the ball joint, then the consequences can be very deplorable. When the support is destroyed, the wheel, together with the steering knuckle, breaks, jamming the upper arm and fender and disabling the front wheel drive. The car loses control, which can cause a serious accident, not to mention the fact that with such a breakdown, Rexton moves only on a tow truck. The first indirect signs of problems with ball joints are steering wheel play - to maintain a straight direction of movement, the position of the steering wheel can change abruptly within 5-10 degrees. In addition, when the suspension is rocking, a characteristic metallic creak appears on bumps. In order to prevent ball bearings, it is recommended to change every 30-40 thousand km or when a torn ball boot is found.

If your choice fell on the modification of AWD, then here you also need to remember about the next “surprise”, in which the car can stand up tightly for no apparent reason at first glance. It will start up and won't even show any errors on the diagnostic scanner. And before that, there was just a slight tapping somewhere in the area of ​​\u200b\u200bthe driver’s right foot when switching the automatic transmission selector, then boom - the engine is running, the selector is in position D, but the car is not moving. Usually this trouble comes in the range of 70-80 thousand kilometers due to the lack of lubrication in the connection. Replacing a cardan will cost 8-10 thousand rubles, and it would be nice if this did not happen away from home and a store with cardans. If the previous owner was handy or read the forums, then it is possible that the joint, dry from the factory, has already been lubricated, and the described problem will bypass you.

SsangYong Rexton is also popular among off-road fans (especially xdi with parttime transmission). On the Russian market, you can buy kits consisting of longer and stiffer springs and shock absorbers with increased travel, then equip your combat vehicle with 33-inch mud tires and go to conquer forests and swamps. But if somewhere in the front began to tap with the front drive connected, you should be wary. There are frequent cases when, unable to withstand the increased load, the front axle support breaks. The engine sump and front axle begin to meet each other, which ends with a hole and oil leaking from the engine. Honor and praise to you if, in the heat of off-road adrenaline, you revealed this in time, if not, repairing an engine left without oil will not be cheap. Since 2010, this support has been reinforced on Russian-assembled machines, but for harsh operating conditions, the strength of a new part is still not enough and there is only one way out - a welding machine, grinder and skillful hands.

The common rail diesel engine system does not tolerate bad fuel, so we recommend that you refuel only at proven gas stations and change fuel filters on time. As a result, problems with starting the engine, increased fuel consumption, black smoke and a drop in power will begin.

The design of the motor is such that extracting the injectors without destroying them is unrealistic, requires special equipment, and is generally hardly possible outside the service station, which specializes specifically in repairing diesel engine fuel systems. All problems with the extraction of nozzles arise due to the small gap between the nozzle and the well of the cylinder head, in which corrosion quickly begins to flourish. I can say that the cost of its SsangYong Rexton II corresponds. I think that all defects make it possible to detect the first hundreds and thousands of kilometers. In my case, at a mileage of 1000 kilometers - the replacement of the rear axle, at 15 thousand mileage - the replacement of the suspension arm (the reason is ball play), it’s good at least to have a relationship with a Mercedes. There is no need to look under the hood of the SsangYong Rexton II, it does not consume oil, there are no complaints about the operation of the motor. Starts up normally, warms up, does not make much noise. The most significant disadvantage is associated with steering, you don’t feel the steering wheel, other disadvantages are smaller. It was necessary to take it with a 2.8-liter gasoline engine, now I regret it, of course, it cannot take off on the highway like a rocket. I have a car in the role of an additional one - as a jeep, and it fully copes with its duties, it showed itself especially well during this winter. In general, the SsangYong Rexton II justifies its purpose and its cost: a sufficient level of cross-country ability (but of course not like a tractor), suits the level of comfort, reliability, there are no special problems with maintenance, including financially. Only now the power steering was not completed, the interior is modest (wretched seating, doors), the seats are laid out somehow primitively. I can’t say anything about diesel modifications, but you can safely take a Rexton with a gasoline engine if you are aware of its purpose and you need it precisely for such purposes (for a jeep, 160 kilometers per hour is not speed).

Took the standard SsangYong Rexton II. When the first months of delight passed, I took a closer look at this car and drew attention to its main shortcomings, which I still can’t come to terms with. This machine is purely frame, rear-wheel drive, rear beam, forced connection of front-wheel drive. Yes, during the first winter it threw me pretty hard, since the back of the car is light, so cornering requires extreme accuracy. If we talk about the interior, I looked at what I take: the chairs are sheathed with fabric, with an air conditioner, with an automatic transmission. Accordingly, the salon suited me. For the period from the date of purchase under warranty, only the replacement of the rear brake hoses, swollen due to frost, was done. The appearance of the car is peculiar, but it is much more important that the car is practical. Fuel consumption: in the city - 11.5 liters, winter - 12-13; on the highway in the mode of 90-130 kilometers per hour - 8.5 liters. The thrust of the engine, as for a diesel one, is quite sufficient, the main thing is to realize that this is not a premium class car, it accelerates stably and smoothly. SsangYong Rexton II did not try to accelerate above 160 kilometers per hour, because at higher speeds you just “catch” the steering wheel. The steering is about the same as that of the "Americans", of course, the information content is insufficient, but in principle I am satisfied. The first quality that attracted me to SsangYong Rexton II was comfort. Sufficiently spacious in the front and rear of the cabin. Excellent soundproofing. In principle, I am satisfied with the head unit. The second point is the sufficient softness of the suspension, not like a Mercedes, of course, but not like other SUVs like Mitsubishi or Nissan. The third quality that you definitely notice is the feeling of kinship with Mercedes, after all, the merger with the concern is not an accidental event. You pay attention to this right away, you just have to lift the hood and see an asterisk with three rays on the engine head and the inscription “licensed by Mercedes”. With such an engine honed over many years (I have a 2.3-liter one), one can rejoice at the unpretentiousness to fuel quality: it consumes AI-92 gasoline without problems. At the same time, the car does not lose its agility. If you are not an amateur racer, then you will be satisfied with the car. I would call a car imposing - this is the most appropriate word for it. It can take off if you spin the engine, but the car is not designed for this, but for comfortable movement. SsangYong Rexton II consumes not so much gasoline for such a car: 15 liters in the city, 11 liters on the highway. It's approximately.

The Kyron has been discontinued, the current Actyon Sports pickup is an evolution of the 2006 model, and the first generation Rexton has been in production since 2001! Therefore, the SsangYong Rexton SUV presented at the Seoul Motor Show without exaggeration opens a new page in the history of the Korean company. This is really a new model that has little in common with the old Rexton, and for greater clarity in Korea, the cars will be sold under the name G4 Rexton, where the G4 prefix stands for “four big revolutions”: in the field of style, safety, technology and driving performance.

Compared to its predecessor, the new SUV is 95 mm longer (4850 mm) and 20 mm wider (1920 mm), while the wheelbase has grown by 30 mm (2865 mm). But the height is now smaller: 1800 instead of 1840 mm. The new frame is made of high-strength steel from the Korean steel company Posco. Although the body does not perform a bearing function, it also consists of 81.7% of high-strength steels of different grades. The company is also very proud to be the first among Korean automakers to offer 20-inch wheels for an SUV.

The chassis configuration is the same as that of the expensive versions of the former Rexton: double wishbone front suspension, multi-link rear. But a modification with a new 2.0 GDI petrol turbo four of its own design with a capacity of approximately 225 hp will also appear on foreign markets. Such cars will be equipped with a six-speed Aisin automatic transmission.

The salon is strictly five-seater, although royal spaciousness is expected on the second row. In general, the interior is decorated in a traditional style, and expensive versions promise to be truly luxurious. For a surcharge, the upholstery of the seats and some interior elements with natural nappa leather is provided. Media system - with a 9.2-inch display and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces. A seven-inch color screen is inscribed in the instrument cluster.

The list of options includes an Infinity audio system, an electric fifth door with an automatic opening function (it’s enough to stand with a key label at the rear of the car for three seconds), an engine start button, dual-zone climate control and all-round cameras, and the image from them is formed into an animated three-dimensional picture, almost like a Lexus car. An electronics complex is responsible for preventive safety, including automatic braking systems, marking tracking and blind spot monitoring, and passive safety is provided by nine airbags.

In the Korean market, SsangYong G4 Rexton will start selling in May, and the main competitors in the company are not only Kia Mohave, but also Land Rover Discovery and Ford Explorer. And this means that prices can be unpleasantly surprising. The start of export deliveries is scheduled only for the end of the year. Sollers, which represents SsangYong in the Russian market, promised to launch a new flagship model in early 2018. And a little later, a pickup truck based on the new Rexton will appear, which has an internal index Q200 and will replace the Actyon Sports model.

We are talking about the weak points of the most affordable SUV with Mercedes power units, which has been sold in Russia in three iterations for almost 15 years.

The SsangYong Rexton SUV has been officially sold in our country for almost a decade and a half since the beginning of the 2000s. During this time, the flagship model of a relatively young South Korean automobile brand, although it did not become a bestseller in the Russian market and never even came close to the Top 10 most popular rogues, nevertheless, was notable for its small, but still stable demand.

Its buyers are not the cheapest among the "Asians", but a rather large and roomy SUV with all-wheel drive and a frame body structure attracted not only decent equipment, but also licensed "Mercedes" power units. A slight similarity in design with the cars of the Stuttgart auto giant also played into the hands of the solid Rexton. In particular, reminiscent of the "Mercedesovskuyu" grille. And now, 4 years after the model left the Russian market, when its new generation loomed on the horizon, we decided to find out how tenacious its predecessors turned out to be in our climate, and what to expect from such Rextons with mileage.

Complicated story

The South Korean SUV with a frame structure and all-wheel drive SsangYong Rexton debuted in 2001 in Frankfurt. The design of the model under the factory index Y200 was developed in Italy, in the eminent Italdesign bureau. The car was created during the partnership of the Korean brand with DaimlerChrysler. As a result of this friendship between the companies, the novelty received licensed Mercedes gasoline and diesel engines, which were aggregated with a 5-speed manual, an Australian 4-band automatic from BTR Automotive, and later with a 5-band automatic transmission from Daimler.

In 2006, the flagship rogue SsangYong was thoroughly modernized. The environmental friendliness of its engines was improved, a particulate filter and a variable geometry turbine appeared. The updated flagship has changed the design of the front. So noticeable that the Koreans called the prettier SUV - Rexton II and assigned it a new Y250 index. On the eve of this big update - in December 2005 - the production of the model was launched at the facilities of the Small Car Plant (ZMA) bought out by Severstal from KamAZ, where the Togliatti Oka had previously been assembled.

In 2012, this generation, called by many the second generation of an SUV, was replaced by another - the third. Although the Y250 index of the model has not changed. Yes, and the essence of the car from the beginning of the "two thousandth" after the next modernization, too. During this restyling, Rexton received other bumpers, fenders, new optics with LEDs, a different grille, hood and side mirrors, a different plastic body kit, and a revised interior. In this form, the rogue was sold with us until 2015, when SsangYong stopped producing the model in Tatarstan and took a time out on the Russian market.

"Resale"

It is possible to characterize the variety of Rextons of all three generations currently on the secondary market with the phrase “a real SUV should be diesel”. Two-thirds of all used cars sold online are on heavy fuel ( 70% ) and only a third - gasoline ( 30% ). SUVs with a gun in the vast majority ( 81% ), and with mechanics, one might say, a rarity ( 19% ). The most common engine on used SsangYong Rexton is a 2.7 turbodiesel ( 67% ). Four times less than gasoline versions with a 2.3 engine ( 15% ) and even fewer top 3.2 ( 12% ). The rest is in short supply: 2.8 ( 3% ), 2.0 (2% ) and 2.9 ( 1% ).

Underbody problems

Many SsangYong Rexton SUVs, even the so-called first generation, despite their age, look very decent. Due to the good anti-corrosion protection of the body metal of these machines, they almost do not rust. True, the paintwork of the model is not very good. Chips on it are not uncommon. And if they are not painted over in a timely manner, then local centers of corrosion will certainly appear on the body of the SUV in these places. Most often, traces of the "red plague" can be found on the roof above the windshield, on the hood worth 31,900 rubles and the trunk door for 6,200 rubles.

Also, the appearance of cars produced before the first restyling is spoiled by roof rails peeling off with age for 14,600 rubles and wiper leashes. And also peeling chrome on the radiator grille from 8900 rubles and protective linings of wheel arches from 1600 rubles. But external traces of corrosion are not so bad. The frame of the car suffers much more from rust. Especially if she has never received additional protective treatment. In early examples, the corrosion of the frame can be so severe that it negatively affects its rigidity. The problem is aggravated by the fact that the frame number is often marked on the frame behind the right front wheel. Check its safety and legibility so that there are no difficulties when registering a car in the traffic police.

Peculiar engines

During sales in Russia, Rexton was equipped with three gasoline engines and the same number of turbodiesels. The car of the first generation was equipped with a 150-horsepower in-line gasoline "four" 2.3 MPI (G23) and a 200-horsepower "six" 2.8 MPI (G28). The top-end 220-horsepower 3.2 MPI (G32) was offered in all generations of the SUV from the very beginning. Also, the "first" Rexton was available with an archaic 120-horsepower diesel "turbo" 2.9 TDI (OM662LA). In 2004, the SUV received a 165-horsepower 2.7 diesel (D27DT), and since 2007, its more capable 186-horsepower "brother" (D27DTP). And finally, in 2012, the 155-horsepower “turbo-four” 2.0 (D20DT) joined the line.

Despite the fact that Rexton engines have a large margin of safety, they still cause trouble for their owners. Gasoline engines are afraid of overheating, and diesel engines suffer from poor quality fuel. The latter, due to the oil separator losing efficiency, require cleaning the intake manifold every 100,000 km. Glow plugs are enough for about 30,000 km. Problems with diesel engines can arise with a converter from 13,000 rubles, an EGR valve for 2,800 rubles and a turbine from 29,000 rubles, which is enough for about 50,000 km. If the diesel smokes heavily and loses traction, then it's time for it to be serviced. But on the other hand, such motors have a reliable and durable piston group.

Yes, and high-pressure fuel pumps for 44,700 rubles with nozzles of 16,900 rubles go at least 150,000 km. The timing chain is survivable for everyone, except for the younger 2-liter diesel engine, in which it stretches to 130,000 km. Petrol units are less troublesome. The key to their health and longevity is preventive measures against overheating. Namely: flushing the cooling radiator every two years with the replacement of a not very durable thermostat for 2200 rubles. A pump for 3200 rubles on the younger "four" runs about 40,000 km. The drive belt tensioner lives on average for 9250 rubles for the same amount. And at intervals of 60,000 - 70,000 km, it may be necessary to replace oil seals and head gaskets to prevent oil leaks.

Transmission

The most reliable on Rekston is the 5-speed manual Dymos TSM54. If there are no oil leaks on its body, and the input shaft bearing for 400 rubles, nursing up to 120,000 km, does not buzz, that is, it is still alive or has already been changed, then you should not expect any problems from this MCP.
