You should also check the quality of fit of the steering gear housing to the spar at three main points.

If cracks are found on the device, they should be treated using electric arc welding. But before welding the crack, you should thoroughly clean the surface and chamfer it at an angle of 60 degrees. If beams or cross members have significant cracks, then welding of a steel insert is allowed. This insert will act as an amplifier. The amplifier can be welded both from the inside of the frame and from the outside. The most important thing is that the amplifier helps eliminate the crack.

Particular attention should be paid to rivet joints. To check their integrity, it is permissible to tap the brackets with a hammer. If the rivets have already loosened, then rattling can be detected on the device. The problem can be eliminated by cutting off the used rivets and replacing them with new ones. All repair work is carried out using a diagram or drawing. The rivets can be replaced with new ones with a larger diameter by first drilling a hole in the beam. To remove old rivets, cut a window in the longitudinal pipe reinforcement to provide access to them from the inside. After installing the rivets, the window is welded. If it is not possible to install rivets, then they can be replaced with bolts and nuts, subject to the mandatory use of growers.

During the operation of the car, the UAZ Patriot frame does not require special care. Its maintenance consists of periodically cleaning it from dirt and checking by external inspection the condition of the side members, cross members, brackets, as well as welded, riveted and bolted connections.

During the next maintenance, you need to check and, if necessary, tighten the mounting bolts of the front bumper, engine mudguards, removable cross member and rear bumper. It is very important to monitor the condition of the painted surface of the frame and promptly touch up places where the paint layer is damaged.

With systematic overloads during operation of the UAZ Patriot or in the event of an accident, distortions, bends, cracks and other damage may appear in some places of the frame, requiring its repair. Also, after straightening the frame, it is necessary to check the perpendicularity of the axis of the brackets to the vertical plane of the frame and the correct fit of the steering gear housing to the spar.

Welding cracks in the UAZ Patriot frame.

Cracks in frame parts are welded using electric arc welding. Before welding, the crack edges are chamfered at an angle of 60 degrees. If there are long cracks on the side members and cross members, an additional reinforcement is welded onto the frame, applied to the welded area. The amplifier is tightly adjusted to the surface of the damaged area. The weld seam of the crack is cleaned flush with the surface before welding the amplifier.

The reinforcement can be welded to the frame of the UAZ Patriot both from the inside and outside, depending on the location of the crack and the ease of performing the work. It is not recommended to weld the amplifier with a weld seam running across the side member, especially in the vertical direction, since such a seam weakens the frame and creates the preconditions for its failure in this place. For greater strength of the frame and the weld, it is advisable to make it at an angle of 45 degrees.

Repair of rivet joints of the UAZ Patriot frame.

The reliability of the rivet joints of the UAZ Patriot frame is checked by tapping them with a hammer. Loose rivets produce a rattling sound when tapped. If a weakening of the rivet connection of the spring brackets is detected, the weakened rivets are cut down and replaced with new ones. In this case, the holes for the rivets are drilled out and rivets of larger diameter are installed instead of the old ones.

Before replacing the rivets in the spar reinforcement, a technological window is cut out opposite the bracket to allow access to the rivets from the inside. After riveting, the window is welded. The contact of the rivet head to the surface of the part must be complete. If it is impossible to repair the rivet joint, the rivets can be replaced with bolts and nuts.

Frame

Device. Three types of frames are installed on UAZ cars. Welded frames consist of two spars connected to each other by cross members. For ease of installation and removal of the engine, one of the cross members is made removable and bolted to brackets welded to the frame side members. The remaining cross members are welded to the side members by electric arc welding.

Utility vehicle frame UAZ-3151 and UAZ-31512 have a second removable cross member. All brackets installed on the frame, except for two brackets for fastening the fixed ends of the front springs, are welded by electric arc welding. The mounting brackets for the fixed ends of the front springs are riveted to the frame side members. The front bumper is attached to the front ends of the side members with six bolts, and tow hooks are attached to the upper flanges of the side members. A towing device of a double-sided closed type, equipped with a rubber elastic element, is attached to the rear cross member of the frame with four bolts. In a variant version, UAZ-31512 vehicles are equipped with a rigid device without an elastic element, intended for short-term towing of a trailer. Two rear bumpers made of 65G spring steel, 4 mm thick, are mounted on the rear cross member and the ends of the side members on both sides of the towing device.

Frame of a UAZ-3741 van has a third removable cross member. The spring mounting brackets are riveted to the frame side members and there are tow hooks at the bottom of the front ends of the side members. The remaining brackets are welded to the frame using an electric arc welder.

At the front ends of the frame side members, brackets are welded to which the bumper is attached. The rear bumper consists of two parts and is mounted on brackets welded to the rear ends of the frame side members. The spare wheel suspension brackets are bolted to the fifth cross member of the frame. A rigid towing device is secured to the last cross member of the frame with four bolts, on both sides of which the footpeg brackets are welded to the frame cross member.

The frame of the UAZ-3741 car is also installed on the UAZ-3962 and UAZ-2206 cars.

UAZ-3303 truck frame is not interchangeable with the UAZ-3741 car frame and differs from it in the shortened rear ends of the side members, the absence of a rear bumper and footrest brackets, a spare wheel mounting bracket and on-board platform mounting brackets.
Along with a rigid towing device, a double-acting towing device with an elastic element can also be installed on the frame of a UAZ-3303 vehicle.

Maintenance. For TO-2, perform the following operations:
Clean the frame from dirt and check by external inspection the condition of the longitudinal beams, cross members, brackets, welded and riveted joints. Check and, if necessary, tighten the bolts securing the bumpers, second cross member, towing device and engine mudguards. Pay special attention to the left longitudinal beam in the area where the steering housing and the first frame cross member are mounted. Check the condition of the painted surface, paint areas with damaged paint layers;
Check the condition of the latch and pawl of the towing device, the reliability of closing the hook mouth, if necessary, lubricate the axles according to the lubrication chart. In towing devices with an elastic element, check the presence of lubricant under the cap, if necessary, add it according to the lubrication chart and check that the hook rotates easily around its axis without noticeable movement in the housing. If there is noticeable movement, tighten the hook support nut.

Repair. When the vehicle is overloaded or in the event of an accident, distortions, bends, cracks and other damage may appear in some places of the frame, requiring frame repair. It is also possible that the rivet connection of the spring brackets may become loose.
Before repairing, clean the frame from dirt, carefully inspect it and identify any damage. Correct the frame in a cold state, guided by the dimensions shown in Fig. 125 and 126. The difference between dimensions A and B should not exceed 5 mm. After straightening the frame of utility vehicles, check the perpendicularity of the axis of the spring brackets to the vertical plane of the frame and the fit of the steering gear housing to the side member at three points of its attachment. In the frame of carriage-type cars, after straightening, check the position of the upper end of the steering shaft. After securing the steering gear housing to the frame bracket, the distance from the longitudinal axis of the vehicle to the axis of the upper end of the steering shaft should be (518 ± 7.5) mm.

Fix cracks in frame parts using electric arc welding. Before welding, chamfer the crack edges at an angle of 60°. If there are long cracks on the longitudinal beams and cross members, additionally weld the reinforcement applied to the welded area. Fit the amplifier tightly to the surface of the damaged area. Before welding the amplifier, clean the weld seam flush with the surface. The amplifier can be welded both from the inside and outside, depending on the location of the crack and the ease of doing the work. It is not recommended to weld the reinforcement with a weld running across the longitudinal beam, especially in the vertical direction, since such a weld weakens it and creates the possibility of frame breakage in this place. For greater frame and weld strength, make it at an angle of 45°

Check the reliability of the rivet joints by tapping them with a hammer. Loose rivets produce a rattling sound when tapped. If you find that the rivet connection of the spring brackets is loose, cut off the loose rivets and replace them with new ones. In this case, drill out the holes for the rivets and install rivets of a larger diameter. Before doing this, cut a window in the longitudinal beam reinforcement opposite the bracket for access to the rivets on the inside of the longitudinal beam, and after riveting, weld the window. The contact of the rivet head to the surface of the part must be complete. If it is impossible to repair the rivet joint, the rivets can be replaced with bolts and nuts.

Repair of the towing device consists of replacing worn and damaged parts. Correction of bent parts of the hook and latch is not allowed.
