To put it mildly, this is not the most advanced car. And not the fastest, and not the most comfortable. And it appeared even before the merger of Mercedes and Benz. And in appearance it was not much different from a stroller. But there is one very important nuance - this is the first car in the world. It is the Patent Motorwagen (the name itself means “motor trolley patent”) that allows Stuttgartians to proudly say that they invented the automobile.
The drive supercharger, or simply compressor, is the component that set Mercedes-Benz apart from other manufacturers, because Stuttgart cars suddenly became the fastest and most powerful in all of Europe. The compressor Mercedes-Benz 500 and 700 again brought the brand to the forefront in the world, and the most luxurious and desirable among them was the 540K (W29) with a roadster body.
Its 5.4-liter inline 8-cylinder engine produced 180 hp, which allowed it to accelerate to 170 km/h - a huge speed by the standards of 1936. Moreover, the supercar of the late 30s reached 160 km/h in just 1/4 mile! And this despite the weight of 2.3 tons.
In addition, this is the most expensive Mercedes-Benz in history - Formula 1 promoter Bernie Ecclestone paid a fantastic $11,770,000 for it in 2011! What is this money for? Firstly, for its beauty, and secondly, for its exclusivity - after all, only 25 roadsters were built.

Mercedes-Benz 600 (W100). It is now that Daimler AG is forced to use the Maybach brand to enter the ultra-luxury segment, but from 1963 to 1981 the coolest car in the world was Mercedes-Benz without any sub-brands. Four- and six-door sedans, limousines and landaulets 600 Grosser Mercedes (W100) became a living symbol of the time when cars with a three-pointed star stood on a par with Rolls-Royce and Bentley.
The W100 impressed not only with its solid appearance and size, but also with its technical perfection. There is no more successful large roadster in the world than the Mercedes-Benz SL, and almost every generation of the model has made history. The very first SL was a 300SL Gullwing sports car without a roof and original doors, it immediately became popular, the second generation - the legendary Pagoda - turned out to be even more successful, but it was the third generation with the factory index R107 that finally conquered the world and destroyed all competitors.
It was equipped with in-line six-cylinder engines of 2.8 and 3.0, as well as V8 of 3.5, 3.8, 4.2, 4.5, 5.0 and 5.6 liters. The third generation roadster was produced from 1972 to 1989 - only the G-Class remained on the assembly line longer in the history of the brand! Moreover, the loyalty of roadster buyers was so great that it remained on the assembly line even when in 1981 the C107 platform coupe gave way to the more modern C126.
During the time that the R107 remained in production, the W114 sedan, on the platform of which it was built, was replaced by the W123, and then it was replaced by the W124! Yes, yes, despite the letter S in the name, the roadster was built on the basis of the then E-class. In just 18 years, 237,287 roadsters were built.

Comfort, status, the highest quality of workmanship, indestructibility and advanced technology - this is exactly what Mercedes-Benz was like in the 1970-1980s. And the absolute embodiment of these qualities was the W123, which brought them to the masses. In Stuttgart they were just starting to think about creating more compact models, and there was no talk of reducing quality.
The 123rd was a dream and a symbol of success in life for any European, a symbol of German thoroughness and quality. German taxi drivers even went on strike, demanding continued production of the model! Perhaps it was the W123 that became the last Mercedes-Benz with million-dollar engines.
Despite the fact that the E-Class in the W124 body and the C-Class in the W203 body were a little short of the results of the W123, this particular car is the most popular Mercedes-Benz in history - 2,696,514 found its customers from 1976 to 1985 sedans, station wagons and coupes.

There have been many failures in the history of the Stuttgart brand, but only once did it lead to the appearance of one of the most legendary cars in the history of Mercedes-Benz - the W460 SUV. The Geländewagen was originally developed for the Iranian army by order of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, but in 1979 the Islamic revolution occurred in the country and the order was cancelled.

The S-class in the W126 body did not become as significant a car in Russia as its successors, but in the history of the brand this particular executive sedan forever remained the best. Yes, it did not have a V12, a 7.0-liter engine or a Pullman version, but it was in this generation that the glory of the flagship Mercedes reached its zenith.
The W126 was offered with four in-line six engines of 2.6, 2.8, 3.0 and 3.5 liters, V8 3.8, 4.2, 5.0 and 5.6, as well as 3.0 and 3.5 turbodiesels. The S-Class also received a version with an extended wheelbase. W126 is one of the first cars developed according to modern standards - crash tests, blowing in a wind tunnel. By the way, it was on it that ABS appeared for the first time in history.
The most reliable, the most comfortable, the most advanced and, most importantly, the most popular - from 1982 to 1991, the W126 sold 818,046 copies. For comparison, the second most popular S-Class in history is the W221, which was purchased by... only 516,000 customers!
Of course, not only the strengths of Mercedes-Benz, but also the weaknesses of competitors led to such success. The BMW 7-Series in the 1980s was still a fairly modest car, the entire Lexus brand was only in plans, and Audi had not yet gained the strength to enter the executive segment, so successful people on both sides of the ocean simply had no choice.

The German company Daimler-Motoren-Gesselschaft, which produces Mercedes cars, was founded in 1901 by Gottlieb Daimler, the legendary author of the world's first four-wheeled car with a gasoline engine. The famous designer Wilhelm Maybach helped Gottlieb Daimler build this car. Despite a number of shortcomings, this initiative was actively supported by the Consul of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Emil Jellinek, after whose daughter the first Mercedes-35P5 model was named. After merging with fellow automaker Benz in 1926, the star became surrounded by a laurel wreath in the shape of a ring, reflecting Benz's victories in the motorsports arena. The new Daimler-Benz concern was headed by Ferdinand Porsche, who significantly updated the Mercedes model range. It was he who launched the “compressor” K series, which included such a famous model as the Mercedes 24/110/160 PS with a six-cylinder engine. The car, equipped with a 6.3-liter engine, accelerated to a fantastic speed of 145 km per hour at that time, for which it was nicknamed the “death trap.”

Hans Niebel, who succeeded Ferdinand Porsche in 1928, took an active part in the development of such cars as the Manheim-370 and Nurburg-500. In 1930, under his leadership, the Mercedes-Benz 770 with a powerful 200-horsepower engine with a displacement of 7.6 liters was introduced to the car market. In addition, the car was equipped with a supercharger. In the 30s, Mercedes-200 passenger cars and Mercedes-380 sports cars were presented to the public, on the basis of which the Mercedes-Benz-540K “compressor” models were built a little later.

In 1935, Max Sailer, the creator of the world's first production passenger car with a diesel power plant, the Mercedes-260D, took over as chief designer. During his administration, machines were built that were actively used by the leaders of the Nazi movement. We are talking about a Mercedes-770, equipped with a frame made of oval beams, with a spring rear suspension.

During World War II, the German concern produced not only Mercedes cars, but also trucks. The hostilities caused great damage to the company's main factories, whose activities were able to resume only a year after the end of the war.

One of the company's first post-war developments was the Mercedes-180, designed in 1953 with a pontoon-type monocoque body. Three years later, the Mercedes-300SL Gullwing sports coupe with unusual gullwing-shaped doors, which at that time had no analogues in the world, saw the light of day.

At the end of the 50s, serial production of Mercedes-Benz was updated with Robert Bosch engines with a mechanical fuel injection system. One of the first models with this innovation was the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE.

The latest achievements in the automotive industry of those years were embodied in a completely new family of middle-class cars, which were offered to customers in 1959. The oil crisis of 1973 had an adverse effect on car sales, but the company managed to get out of the difficult situation by launching the W114/W115 series with more fuel-efficient engines. Of course, with such technical characteristics, the Mercedes 500E car model was very fast. But in addition to the dynamics of acceleration and maximum speed, this car was also equipped with the latest technology of that time.

2) 1998-1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR

For FIA GT1 class racing, Mercedes developed the CLK GTR sports car, which was created on the basis of a city car. This Model CLK GTR was released in limited edition.

E-Class: the beginning

The most reliable Mercedes models are produced in this segment. And the history of the E-class begins back in 1947. It was a car known as “170”. Then others appeared - 180, and then 190. Over nine years, the concern sold about 468 thousand copies (including diesel ones). However, this is already a rarity. The w123 Mercedes is rightfully considered one of the most famous old ones. Old models are in demand even today. And the W123 is a classic. Taxi drivers in Germany loved this car so much that when it was decided to discontinue it, they went on strike. Of course, the famous “five hundredth” attracted (and continues to attract) special attention. Looking at such characteristics, you involuntarily understand that many modern cars are an order of magnitude lower than the Mercedes of the nineties. And this is the brightest representative of the E-class.

“Special” class

When talking about Mercedes models, one cannot help but mention the S-Class. “Sonderklasse” is where the letter designation comes from. And this is translated as a “special” class. The first representative of this segment appeared in 1972. The first model became known as the W116. And, I must say, it became popular, which marked the beginning of the active production of new cars.

The S-Class is considered one of the best. And the quality is really decent. Needless to say, even the first model had a V8 engine under the hood that produced 200 horsepower! A little later, potential buyers had the opportunity to purchase 6-cylinder ones, among which there was even a carburetor option.
