Its 5.4-liter inline 8-cylinder engine produced 180 hp, which allowed it to accelerate to 170 km/h - a huge speed by the standards of 1936. Moreover, the supercar of the late 30s reached 160 km/h in just 1/4 mile! And this despite the weight of 2.3 tons.
In addition, this is the most expensive Mercedes-Benz in history - Formula 1 promoter Bernie Ecclestone paid a fantastic $11,770,000 for it in 2011! What is this money for? Firstly, for its beauty, and secondly, for its exclusivity - after all, only 25 roadsters were built.

Mercedes-Benz 600 (W100). It is now that Daimler AG is forced to use the Maybach brand to enter the ultra-luxury segment, but from 1963 to 1981 the coolest car in the world was Mercedes-Benz without any sub-brands. Four- and six-door sedans, limousines and landaulets 600 Grosser Mercedes (W100) became a living symbol of the time when cars with a three-pointed star stood on a par with Rolls-Royce and Bentley.

During the time that the R107 remained in production, the W114 sedan, on the platform of which it was built, was replaced by the W123, and then it was replaced by the W124! Yes, yes, despite the letter S in the name, the roadster was built on the basis of the then E-class. In just 18 years, 237,287 roadsters were built.

Comfort, status, the highest quality of workmanship, indestructibility and advanced technology - this is exactly what Mercedes-Benz was like in the 1970-1980s. And the absolute embodiment of these qualities was the W123, which brought them to the masses. In Stuttgart they were just starting to think about creating more compact models, and there was no talk of reducing quality.

Of course, not only the strengths of Mercedes-Benz, but also the weaknesses of competitors led to such success. The BMW 7-Series in the 1980s was still a fairly modest car, the entire Lexus brand was only in plans, and Audi had not yet gained the strength to enter the executive segment, so successful people on both sides of the ocean simply had no choice.

The German company Daimler-Motoren-Gesselschaft, which produces Mercedes cars, was founded in 1901 by Gottlieb Daimler, the legendary author of the world's first four-wheeled car with a gasoline engine. The famous designer Wilhelm Maybach helped Gottlieb Daimler build this car. Despite a number of shortcomings, this initiative was actively supported by the Consul of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Emil Jellinek, after whose daughter the first Mercedes-35P5 model was named. Hans Niebel, who succeeded Ferdinand Porsche in 1928, took an active part in the development of such cars as the Manheim-370 and Nurburg-500. In 1930, under his leadership, the Mercedes-Benz 770 with a powerful 200-horsepower engine with a displacement of 7.6 liters was introduced to the car market. In addition, the car was equipped with a supercharger. In the 30s, Mercedes-200 passenger cars and Mercedes-380 sports cars were presented to the public, on the basis of which the Mercedes-Benz-540K “compressor” models were built a little later.

In 1935, Max Sailer, the creator of the world's first production passenger car with a diesel power plant, the Mercedes-260D, took over as chief designer. During his administration, machines were built that were actively used by the leaders of the Nazi movement. We are talking about a Mercedes-770, equipped with a frame made of oval beams, with a spring rear suspension.

During World War II, the German concern produced not only Mercedes cars, but also trucks. The hostilities caused great damage to the company's main factories, whose activities were able to resume only a year after the end of the war.
