Hyundai Elantra V sedan. Hyundai Elantra MD – starting position

Hyundai Elantra MD (J5) review

The fifth generation Hyundai Elantra received the factory index MD and the internal index J5 in the Elantra Club.
The model was first shown in April 2010 at the Busan Motor Show (Busan, South Korea), and sales in the domestic Korean market under the name Avante MD began in the second half of 2010. Almost simultaneously sales started in North America - there the model is traditionally called Elantra. But the fifth generation “reached” Russia only a year later - in the second half of 2011. That is why, in various publications, this generation may be called “Elantra 2011”.
In August 2013, a model update was introduced in Korea. The updated Elantra received a slightly redesigned design and some new options. The wheelbase has not changed, but the overall length has increased by 20 mm to 4550 mm due to the increase in the front bumper by 5 mm and the rear by 15 mm. External elements have been updated: front bumper, radiator grille, fog lights and headlights (+added LED daytime running lights), wheels, rear bumper, tail lights (with LEDs). There have also been minor changes in the interior, based, among other things, on feedback from the owners: the central air ducts have been moved upward, the position of the armrest has been changed, some elements of the center console have been changed, a seat ventilation function has been added, and the head unit has received a new display. Added Flex Steer electric power steering control system and an advanced automatic parking system. A 1.6-liter diesel engine has been added to the engine lineup, as well as a proprietary start-stop system (ISG).
Note: Not all options listed are available in Russia.

The main body of the car is a sedan. Given the popularity of the model, two more body styles were introduced in America at the beginning of 2012:
- Coupe - three-door version of the sedan
- GT - hatchback (in Russia and Europe known as the second generation Hyundai i30).
At the time of writing, only the sedan is officially supplied to Russia. The hatchback in Russia is sold as a separate i30 model.

The Koreans presented the fifth generation of their C-class sedan to the world in early May 2010 at the international motor show in the South Korean city of Busan, and it reached the Russian market only after a year and a half.

In 2013, the car in an updated guise was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show - it received a retouched exterior and a redesigned interior.

The appearance of the Elantra is, as they say, sparkling - a balanced silhouette, which is generously strewn with many fussy surfaces flowing into each other. And I must say, the sedan looks beautiful and expressive: graceful curves of large optics (front – lensed with “threads” of LED elements, rear – with LED sections), sculpted bumpers, swift silhouette with a short hood and domed roof. Without exaggeration, the exterior design of the “fifth” Elantra can be called one of the “strongest” in the class - it’s so good!

The length of the Korean three-volume car is 4550 mm, its width is 1775 mm, and its height does not exceed 1445 mm. The sedan's wheelbase is 2700 mm, and the ground clearance (clearance) is 150 mm.

The interior of the 5th generation Hyundai Elantra looks stylish, and its design fully meets modern fashion trends. The instruments are beautiful and informative; in the “top” version they are represented by the Super Vision combination, and the multi-steering wheel fits well into the concept of the interior decoration. The stylish center console is functional in practice, the controls are not overloaded, in the initial configurations it houses a conventional radio and air conditioning, and in more advanced ones – a 7-inch multimedia display and dual-zone climate control.

The cabin of the “fifth Elantra” can easily accommodate five people – still, it is considered one of the largest in its class. The front seats do not offer lateral support, but they are well profiled, so they hold you firmly in corners. There is enough space in the back for three people, but if there is a lot of space in the width and in the legs (and there is no central tunnel), then the proximity of the sloping roof is felt.

The cargo compartment of this sedan has a volume of 485 liters - with smooth walls, a moderate loading height and a full spare tire with a repair kit under the raised floor. The rear sofa folds in two parts, but there is a step between the back and the floor.

Specifications. There are two engines available for the Hyundai Elantra sedan:

  • The base 1.6-liter Gamma engine with multipoint injection and variable valve timing generates 132 horsepower and 158 Nm of torque at 4860 rpm.
    In combination with a six-speed manual transmission, this “Elantra” rushes to 100 km/h in 10.1 seconds, with a 6-speed automatic – 1.5 seconds slower (“maximum” – 200 and 194 km/h, respectively).
  • The most productive option is the 1.8-liter naturally aspirated Nu series four, equipped with an aluminum block, variable timing and an intake manifold with custom geometry. The engine output is 150 “horses” and 178 Nm of thrust at 4700 rpm.
    In tandem with an automatic transmission, it allows the three-volume car to accelerate to the first hundred in 10.2 seconds and reach a peak speed of 202 km/h.

The gasoline consumption of the Hyundai Elantra is very moderate: in mixed mode, the 1.6-liter unit “eats” 6.4-6.9 liters (in favor of the “mechanics”), and the 1.8-liter unit requires an average of 7.1 liters.

This Korean C-sedan is based on a budget version of the platform that underpins the Hyundai i30. Comfort in motion is ensured by an independent suspension with MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-independent suspension with an elastic beam at the rear. The steering mechanism has an integrated electric power steering, and the brakes on all wheels are disc (ventilated on the front wheels), ABS, ESP and EBD systems are present.

Options and prices. In 2015, the Hyundai Elantra is offered on the Russian market in three trim levels (Base, Active and Comfort) at prices starting from 839,900 rubles. The most affordable version of the car is equipped with front airbags, electric power steering, ABS, ESP and EBD technologies, air conditioning, electric windows on all doors, a radio with 4 speakers, heated front seats and some other equipment.
The cost of the maximum configuration of the Elantra with a 150-horsepower engine is from 1,009,900 rubles. Its prerogative is an audio system with six speakers, dual-zone climate control, six airbags, a rear view camera, a multimedia center (7-inch display), navigation and light and rain sensors.

LEDs appeared in the front optics. The sporty appearance of the car is emphasized by the relief stampings on the sides of the body. The front bumper of the Hyundai Elantra overhangs too much, requiring the driver to be careful when parking. In addition, only rear parking sensors are available in the car - and then only in luxury trim levels. Unusual moves are also noticeable in the cabin: the instruments are hidden in recesses, and the trim is made of soft plastic. Changes have occurred in the position of the ventilation deflectors located near the multimedia screen; air ducts have appeared for rear passengers. In top trim levels, the steering wheel is covered in leather.

Manufacturers also took care of creating comfort when landing: the driver’s seat is height adjustable. The steering column is adjustable for reach and height. Thanks to this, people with a height of up to 190 cm can sit as comfortably as possible. There is much less space in the cabin at the back: there is plenty of legroom, but the piled-up pillars reduce the height of the already low roof. The dimensions of the new version of the Hyundai Elantra have increased slightly: in particular, the length has increased to 4550 mm. The remaining dimensions remain the same: width - 1775 mm, height - 1445 mm. The wheelbase of the car is 2700 mm, and the ground clearance is 15 centimeters. The trunk volume is 420 liters.

There have been no changes under the hood: the Hyundai Elantra is still equipped with 1.6 (132 hp) and 1.8 (150 hp) gasoline engines that meet the Euro-IV environmental standard. Fuel consumption in the city is 8.6-9.7 liters, on the highway - 5.2-5.3 liters. The volume of the fuel tank is 50 liters.

The sedan is equipped with a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual. The car can accelerate to 202 km/h, reaching the first hundred in 10.2 seconds. The Hyundai Elantra sedan is created in a front-wheel drive layout. The car's suspension is a combination of an independent McPherson suspension with a stabilizer at the front and a semi-independent spring at the rear. The brakes on the Hyundai Elantra are disc (ventilated at the front).

Compared to its predecessor, the choice of trim levels available to Russian motorists has changed: instead of the Sport and Optima versions, the Active trim level is now available. Base and Comfort trim levels are also available to customers.

The basic version includes electric power steering, rear fog lights, heated side mirrors, front airbags, ISOFIX mounts, air conditioning, a six-speaker audio system and a trip computer. The upholstery is made of fabric. To assist the driver, an anti-lock braking system, electronic stability control and brake force distribution systems and a Follow me home function are installed.

The Active package features front fog lights, leather-trimmed gear knob, side airbags and curtain airbags. Climate control is available in the cabin.

The Comfort version includes a hands free device and spotlights. An engine start button is optionally available. The car can be equipped with a navigation system, a rear view camera and a seven-inch monitor.

In April 2010, the South Korean automaker Hyundai launched the production of a new, fifth generation of the well-known Elantra model (in South Korea - Hyundai Avante). This generation differs from its ancestor in the higher quality of materials used, original design and improved driving characteristics, thanks to which it can easily compete with other representatives of its segment . The internal “stuffing” of the car was also greatly redesigned and improved; a large number of different electronic systems appeared that make driving much easier and more comfortable, thereby eliminating the weaknesses of the previous generation. The car was produced only in a front-wheel drive configuration. The buyer was offered a choice of variations with two naturally aspirated petrol engines of 1.6 or 1.8 liters, paired with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, which are capable of accelerating the car to more than 200 km/h. Looking at this car, we can confidently say that the company’s engineers did a good job of improving the already good characteristics of the previous generation, however, it is impossible to eliminate all the shortcomings, so the resulting product has its advantages and disadvantages, which we will talk about in this article.

The main advantages of Elantra

Before considering the main issue of the topic, let us outline the main advantages of this model:

  1. Reliable power units;
  2. Fuel efficiency with sufficiently high engine power;
  3. Good maneuverability;
  4. Ergonomic interior;
  5. Cheap to maintain;
  6. The compression ratio allows the use of 92nd gasoline;
  7. Low price;
  8. Decent sound insulation for its price category;
  9. Adaptability to Russian operating conditions;
  10. Pleasant appearance;
  11. Roomy interior and trunk for this class;
  12. High maintainability.

Weaknesses of the 5th generation Hyundai Elantra (MD)

  1. Steering rack;
  2. Shock absorber struts;
  3. Front wheel bearings;
  4. Ball joints;
  5. Ignition coils;
  6. Gasoline pump;
  7. ABS sensors;
  8. CV joints;
  9. Rear crankshaft oil seal.

Steering rack.

Probably the most famous weakness of this car is its steering rack. Due to engineering miscalculations in its production, it is not able to withstand the loads placed on it for a long time, as a result of which it first simply begins to hum when turning the steering wheel, then knocks, and then simply fails. Typically, the death of this unit occurs at mileages from 20 to 50 thousand kilometers, which is within the range of the factory warranty, so replacement work is carried out by the dealer.

But there are situations when the rail goes to the next world after the end of the warranty period. In this case, you will have to pay about 50 thousand rubles. to troubleshoot.

Shock absorber struts.

Although the car’s suspension was designed for driving on poor-quality Russian roads, the shock absorber struts often do not live up to the expectations placed on them. As a rule, a factory defect manifests itself after a mileage of 50 thousand kilometers and consists of deterioration in handling, increased braking distance, increased car roll when turning or sharp braking, as well as unpleasant knocking in the suspension.

The cost of one shock absorber strut is about 2500-3000 rubles. per piece, which is very inexpensive. However, if any of them fails, then all the others will also soon be asked to be replaced.

Front wheel bearings.

Not only the steering rack, but also the wheel bearings are subject to increased loads in this car. As in the first case, Hyundai engineers did not take into account some factors of Russian reality and installed insufficiently powerful bearings in the hubs, turning them into another weak spot. As a result, they rarely overcome the 50 thousand km mark, “delighting” the driver with an unforgettable howl at high speeds.

Ball joints.

The next victim of poor design was the ball joints. Due to increased loads, as well as insufficient quality materials used in their production, balls have to be changed quite often. Depending on operating conditions, the replacement period for this unit can be every 20 thousand km, which causes a lot of trouble for the owners.

Ignition coils.

Many owners also consider operating problems to include the constant need to replace ignition coils, problems with which begin after a mileage of 40 thousand km. Symptoms of an upcoming replacement include periodic engine tripping, loss of power, starting problems, increased fuel consumption and other, not the most favorable things. The cost of one coil, on average, ranges from 1,500 to 2,000 rubles, and you can carry out the work of replacing them yourself.

Although the engine is designed to use low-quality Russian fuel, its fuel pump is not capable of digesting small debris and water contained in it. With a mileage of 50 thousand, you can already feel a loss of car throttle response caused by wear of the internal pump mechanisms and, as a result, insufficient fuel pressure. A new fuel pump will cost you from 1,200 to 2,500 thousand rubles, but the cost of replacing it greatly depends on the service station you choose.

The next common breakdown of the car in question is the ABS system sensors, which are very sensitive to water and dirt getting on them. Since there is always an abundance of this “good” on our roads, problems with the anti-lock braking system can arise already at a mileage of 50 thousand and can only be treated by replacing faulty components.

On cars with a 1.6-liter engine and an automatic transmission, a disease in the form of rapid wear of CV joints is often encountered. The first signs of an upcoming replacement may be extraneous sounds when starting from a stop on the wheels turned out, weak kicks when starting from a standstill and when changing gears.

If you drive aggressively enough, this unpleasant moment can manifest itself already at a mileage of 40 thousand km, so it is highly not recommended to subject CV joints to excessive loads, especially on inverted wheels, because their cost can reach 20 thousand rubles apiece.

Rear crankshaft oil seal.

The least common of all the above defects, but one that occurs in many owners of this car, is the problem of oil leaks from under the rear crankshaft oil seal.

By itself, this element costs little (about 500 rubles), but the work to replace it can reach 8-10 thousand. This is due to the design feature of the motor and its location in the engine compartment, which makes the replacement process very problematic.

The main disadvantages of the Hyundai Elantra 2010–2015. release

Other shortcomings of this car include:

  1. The coating of the steering wheel and gear knob wears out quickly;
  2. Low overhang of the front bumper;
  3. Wide left windshield pillar, which greatly limits visibility;
  4. Insufficient quality paintwork;
  5. Few places to store small items;
  6. Loses value quickly.

Conclusion.

For a practical person who does not have great financial resources, but wants to get a high-quality, reliable, pleasant-looking and economical car, the 5th generation Hyundai Elantra will be one of the best options for purchase. Of course, this car is in the middle price category and cannot lay claim to the laurels of an ideal transport. It has its pros and cons, the significance of which only you can draw conclusions about. But we can say with confidence that in terms of price/quality ratio, this machine is head and shoulders above most of its classmates, you can be sure.

P.S.: Dear car owners, if you have noticed frequent breakdowns of any parts or components of this car model, please report it in the comments below.

Weaknesses, advantages and disadvantages of the Hyundai Elantra (MD) was last modified: February 24, 2019 by Administrator

Class C+
Front-wheel drive
Transmission 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The fifth generation of the mid-size Hyundai Elantra sedan was presented in May 2010 at the Busan International Auto Show. The fifth generation Elantra MD is placed between the Hyundai Solaris and Hyundai Sonata and i40 in marketing terms, being more close to the latter. In the domestic market, the model was sold as Avante (and with an avant-garde automatic parking system). The model came to the Russian market in the fall of 2011 as the New Elantra. The Elantra MD was equipped with 1.6-, 1.8- and 2.0-liter gasoline engines, including GDi direct injection with power from 126 to 174 hp. The Elantra MD was Hyundai's first mid-size sedan with GDI systems and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The basic configuration of the Hyundai Elantra MD has become more equipped in relation to its predecessor Elantra HD (IV generation), and has almost reached the level of the top configuration of the GLS Elantra HD, but without fog lights, an air quality control system, climate control (although air conditioning is provided), leather upholstery of the steering wheel and gear shift lever, sliding armrest (there is only a non-sliding one) of the front seat. In the top configuration, the Elantra MD received such options as heated rear seats, a cabin air ionizer, a rain sensor, and a full-size spare tire. In 2014, the model was restyled.

Advantages:

– The suspension and engine are specially modified for Russian operating conditions
– Good handling even without the use of electronic systems
– The car loses relatively little value with age due to high demand in the secondary market
– Quite reliable (up to a mileage of 200,000 km) and simple engines (especially G4FC) with a timing chain drive ($70) with a service life of 80–100,000 km and a manual gearbox (clutch service life ($150) over 100,000 km)
– Good passive safety – 5 stars in the EuroNCAP frontal test

Flaws:

– Low dynamics even with “eco mode” disabled (11.6 s with automatic transmission)

Body (externally):

– Design flaw (too small a gap (less than 2 mm) between the casing and the fan, which can cause the fan to freeze due to condensation, overheating and a fire in the engine compartment!
– Thin paint coating
– Corrosion under the glass seals along the top
– Clear signs of corrosion on cars restored after an accident

Body (salon):

– The steering wheel peels off quickly
– The glass in the guides becomes distorted (cleaning and lubrication)
– The glove box latch becomes loose
– Creaking of the rear parcel shelf in the cabin in cold weather (silicon grease helps)
– Insufficient basic sound insulation

Body (electrics):

– Weak headlights
– Relatively more frequent replacement of light bulbs in headlights and lanterns than European and Japanese counterparts

Engines (petrol):

– Relatively low maintainability of all-aluminum engines (wear of the less powerful 1.6-liter G4FC engine is usually higher)
– Due to poor quality fuel, the throttle valve and fuel filter become clogged
– Due to the slippage of the timing chain, the valves may hit the pistons (the chain tension must be controlled at scheduled TO-5 and TO-6)
– An oil change is recommended after 10,000 km (15,000 km)

Transmission (manual):

– If the clutch disc wears out (after 100,000 km), it is recommended to replace the assembly: disc, basket, release bearing

Transmission (automatic):

– Dead units are found only in dashing drivers

Chassis:

– Weak Mando rear shock absorbers, which failed even with minimal mileage, too soft struts are dangerous at speeds, replacement with Kayaba is recommended
– Noisy standard tires
– Low service life of stabilizer struts ($12) and wheel bearings ($28) – 30,000 km
– Front lever life ($60) – 100,000 km
– Front brake pads are changed after 30,000 km, discs - after 60,000 km, and rear drums - 100,000 km
– Inherent knocking of the steering rack when moving over large obstacles, and when it intensifies, you need to replace a set of plastic bushings ($150 with replacement), which usually lasts for 30,000 km
