Automotive publications have circulated on the Web information about the alleged details of the exterior and interior of the new 2018-2019 Ford Kuga crossover, while the company has not officially announced the start of production. There are also no first teasers of the car yet.

According to publications, significant changes appear in the exterior of the new generation Kuga. The manufacturer promises to use a new platform for the production of the car, which will increase its dimensions.

It is expected that without changing the corporate style, the machine will have the following new parameters:

  • powerful radiator grill;
  • large bonnet stamping lines;
  • widened wheel arches;
  • a new form of plastic body kit;
  • multi-stage front bumper design;
  • narrow head optics;
  • LED elements for rear lights;

In the basic version, the car will be all-wheel drive, and front-wheel drive will be available as an option. In addition, the basic configuration assumes a 6-speed manual transmission, and all the rest - the same "automatic".

It will not do without additional security systems and equipment. While the installation is being considered:

When will the 2018 Ford Kuga go on sale?

The third generation Ford Kuga is slated for production at the end of 2018. In Europe, the car will be assembled at a plant in Valencia (Spain), while the car in the basic version for this market is estimated at 25 thousand euros.

For the Russian market, the new product, like its predecessor, will be assembled in Tatarstan in the city of Elabug, and the cost was originally announced at 1.55 million rubles.

The crossover of the American company is still of interest to Russians due to its high level of safety, reliability, dynamic properties, comfort, improved cross-country ability and controllability.

Alas, for some reason it was not on the updated Ford Kuga. I had to go down the old fashioned way, that is, on the brakes. It's not scary on a dry hillock, but when you have to drive down slippery slopes, the electronic assistant would even come in handy.

Another question is to what extent the new Kuga is suitable for driving to the top of one or another hill. On the first Kugahs there was a Haldex clutch, but then Ford decided to save money and began to independently develop all-wheel drive systems. They coped with the task and their system works well. The only question is: why does it not have a clutch lock button so that, if necessary, the driver could force the all-wheel drive to be permanent? By the way, there is no disabling the ESP system here, and off-road it helps a lot.

Nevertheless, the new Ford Kuga is capable of conquering the roller coaster well. Still, his motor is good, and besides, it works in tandem with a real machine. The car easily enters the top of any hillock. However, the sport mode itself is wonderful. It also has an instant response to pressing the pedal, there is also a pick-up, but the emptying of the gas tank occurs at an alarming rate. However, as soon as the lever is shifted up, the mode will change to the usual "Drive", after which the character of the car changes significantly. The pickup is no longer the same, but the fuel consumption is reduced to 12 liters "per hundred" of the run.

One of the main features of the updated Ford Kuga is the new multimedia Sync 3. There are no questions for its large screen, but now its new map is very difficult to understand. In particular, if you want to return to the main menu from the navigation, it is rather difficult to do this.

By the way, in the multimedia system, Traction Control was also disabled, which I wanted to do, but failed during a test drive off-road. The fact is that in most cars this disconnection is very simple: by pressing a single button. You couldn't think of it better. For example, while driving, when the driver sees that there is dirt in front of him. In this case, he presses the desired button and the ESP system is instantly deactivated. As soon as the dirt is left behind, the driver activates the system using the same button.

On the new Kuga, this functionality is much more complicated. The owner of the crossover has to climb into the menu, make five or six movements there before he gets to the desired option, and only after that he will be able to turn off the stabilization system. Why are there such difficulties?

Under the hood of the new Kuga

In Russia, a Ford Kuga is sold with an EcoBust gasoline engine with a volume of one and a half liters and a capacity of 180 hp. There is also a second motor - this is a well-known, time-tested aspirated engine. its working volume is 2.5 liters, and the power is 150 hp. It works in tandem with a machine gun. Why is this motor good? It is, of course, much more reliable, since it does not have a turbine. On the other hand, while driving, he is very slow and the car, as they say, does not go with him. If there is EcoBoost under the hood, the dynamics of the car is completely different.

Two versions of the new Ford Kuga:

  • Engine: EcoBoost, displacement 1.5 liters, turbocharged, power 182 hp, torque 240 Nm. Drive: either full or front, gearbox: 6-speed automatic.
  • Engine: gasoline aspirated, displacement 2.5 liters, power 150 hp Drive: front only.

The test drive showed that the updated Ford Kuga has changed, in general, not much, which has twofold consequences. With one of them, the good thing is that the car's handling and its cross-country ability have been preserved. On the other hand, some electronic chips of the updated model will not really appeal to future owners. Although, of course, the decisive factor, as usual, will be the price. The novelty is offered in four levels of equipment:

  1. 1,379 million rubles. there is a restyled version of the Kuga in the Trend version. This is the basic configuration, and therefore it is not worth waiting for it much. Under the hood there will be a 2.5-liter engine, and the drive will only go to the front axle. However, the crossover will have both ESP and ABS, which has become mandatory today. The driver will have a range of assistants designed for situations such as emergency braking and starting off on an incline.   2. Trend Plus will be slightly better at a price of 1,469 million rubles. Here the buyer will receive a car with a turbocharged EcoBoost, and most importantly, he will have the opportunity to choose the type of drive: either front or full.
  3. Next comes the Titanium package with a price tag starting at 1.559 million rubles. Anyone who buys such a version will have the opportunity to choose an engine: either a good old aspirated engine, or a brand new EcoBoost with a turbocharger.
  4. The model line is crowned by the Titanium Plus version, which costs almost 2 million rubles. It will feature all the innovations described above, such as Sync 3 multimedia, as well as a parking lot and a "wave your foot" opening of the trunk.

I drove a week on the previous generation Ford Kuga crossover, got into a new car and remembered a feeling familiar to every young journalist: it was as if I got my article after a tough editorial revision, where almost every line was crossed out! I, of course, understood that the source code could be modified, but so that, as they say in our editorial office, a "complete rewrite" ...

Taking the key to the new Kuga in my hands, I shuddered: it’s the same as the old one! This is it, trying to open the hood a couple of days ago in order to fill the washer, I disassembled and assembled it several times in the cold, dropping the sting into the mucus of the reagents. Fortunately, turnkey bonnet locks are now a thing of the past, just like other Fords. The washer itself can now be taken out of the trunk without getting dirty or suffering with a heavy door. The glass of the cargo compartment, unlike its predecessor, does not rise separately, but on a car with keyless access, you can order the familiar, for example, Volkswagen function “kick in the ass”: put your foot to the bumper - and the door rises, “kick” again - it goes down ...

A natural-born football player, “kick” control of the tailgate can get mad: lifting the lid starts two or three seconds after the “hit” and lasts at least three times longer than opening a door without such bells and whistles manually. But the unhurried reward is clean hands!

True, I did not get along with this system - Kuga does not immediately react to a kick. With my hands I would have opened and closed the trunk three times already, and here I stand and wait. And you cannot speed up the process manually - the mechanism resists, the door wedges. Option for the patient.

But for the prudent, that is, for most of those who turned their backs on the predecessor Coogie, there is a new range of motors. Instead of a two-hundred-horsepower petrol "turbo five" 2.5 - "four" EcoBoost 1.6 with a capacity of 150 or 182 hp. (the difference between these options is not only in the software, but also in the processors of the engine control unit, that is, it is impossible to "finish" the first unit to the second), from now on we will have a 2.0 TDCi diesel only in the 140-horsepower version (without the 163 hp version). pp.), and "mechanics" - only at the "initial" Kuga with 150-horsepower gasoline Ecoboost and front-wheel drive.


There are no problems with the readability of the Focus devices. The only thing I didn’t like was that the windows that pop-up on the display overlap for a long time, for example, the readings of the navigation system (displayed on the right side of the screen)

All-wheel drive petrol versions are equipped with the same six-speed hydromechanical "automatic" as in the Explorer model, and diesel ones - with a PowerShift preselective "robot". So, they say, it is easier (that is, cheaper) to "globalize" the model, which has been produced in the American Louisville since April last year, in Valencia, Spain since December, and since April this year its SKD assembly will be established in our Yelabuga, where similar the way they did the old Kugu.

In my opinion, the new model did not become more beautiful (a typical first reaction to an article after an editorial revision). Earlier I saw a fit sportsman with clear eyes-headlights in Kuga, but now she narrowed her eyes unkindly, got fat ... Greetings from Hyundai ix35! However, on the eve of a business trip, I grumbled into the recorder that in the "first" Kuga the rear seats are cramped, that getting out of there is inconvenient, and the trunk is small? Everything has been fixed! Although the car is built on a platform leading the pedigree from the first generation compact van C-MAX, it is much more spacious.

With the same wheelbase (2690 mm), the crossover has become 81 mm longer (now 4524 mm), and the volume of the cargo compartment has increased from 360 to 456 liters. I feel this increase, first of all, in the back seat, as if shifted into the trunk: now, sitting "by myself", I do not rest my shins on the lower edge of the front seat, but when leaving, I do not touch the B-pillar with my feet and do not dodge the door.

In addition, both parts of the rear seat backrest now have not one, but three fixed positions, fold not after the cushion, but on top of it, and in one touch, and the front part of the optional glass roof (previously it was solid and fixed tightly) is now possible lift or slide. In general, passengers should be satisfied.

The front seats were cool before, and they remain so now. The adjustment of the lumbar support has been moved from the side of the backrest to the outer part of the base of the cushion; in the absence of an electric drive, the tilt of the backrest is adjusted in steps

The interior of the former Kuga seemed outdated to me because of the flat, cut into rectangles of the front panel, and in the new one there is a three-dimensional riot of the "third" Focus, except that the bottom of the center console is not fenced off from the passenger. I press the Ford Power button, move smoothly, spin the 182-horsepower EcoBoost - and I notice that as we approach 5000 rpm, the sound becomes frankly unpleasant. Actually, with the "boost" there is order - the dynamics declared in the passport (9.7s to 100 km / h) is enough, and I am sure that even a 150-horsepower version of this engine will not give the driver a feeling of inferiority. But with the "machine" I would like to establish a more trusting relationship. Smoothly throttle at the exit from the turn, the box hastily picks up a lower gear, I drop-add a little - and switch again, although the “automatic” should have kept the gear tighter. Mode S does not change the picture either, but poking your finger into the plus-minus key located on the left side of the selector - thank you: it's inconvenient and pointless due to tangible delays.

It looks like Kuga's ride has become softer even on a flat road - the passenger falls asleep on the count of two. There are no problems on the broken paths that lead to orange plantations in sunny Valencia - it's a pity that juicy-looking fruits are still ripening and ripening. I was only embarrassed by the “vibration” sounds that come from the suspension on a rigid “comb”, as if something had been unscrewed there.

In the all-wheel drive, the "Volvo" Haldex clutch was replaced with a multi-disc mechanism with a ball-cam clutch (the same as for the Explorer and Edge models) of our own production: now, based on 40 signals that are sent to the "all-wheel drive brain" every 16 ms, the rear The new axle is not connected on the basis of front wheel slip, but preventively. I could not feel the moments of connection on dry land, but on the interactive display of the instrument panel I saw that traction to the rear wheels (judging by the schedule - a maximum of 50%) is also supplied with just active driving, even without a hint of slipping.


By the way, I had to be nimble only because I was late - Kuga herself does not appeal to this. From the same Focus (and to a slightly lesser extent from the previous Kuga), the new crossover differs in turns not so much in the "grip" as in the increased rolls. The effort on the steering wheel has become less natural (the help of the electric booster is often excessive), while cornering, the engine, under the supervision of the Curve Control system, aimed at combating understeer, is choked by electronics ... But the anti-unnatural system is not.

Once again, I caught myself thinking that I am more and more afraid of cars stuffed with electronic "assistants". Flat tire? No, it was the overseer, behind the marking, smoothly turned the steering wheel away from the dividing one ... To freely cross the solid road from the side of the roadside! As a result, there is no more trust, but there is tension. As Coogee has the title of "the most technologically advanced Ford in Europe."

Honestly, it would be more useful to use "electronic" money to adjust the same PowerShift box, which was equipped with my second in line Kuga with a 163-horsepower diesel engine. As in the case with a gasoline car, the number of "horses" is not important here - back in Moscow, driving the former 163-strong Kuga, I noted that I would have survived the loss of twenty forces easily, so the fact that there will be only one in Russia, 140-horsepower version of the diesel engine, I don't see any trouble.

The Kuga 2.0 TDCi accelerates a little more quickly than the petrol version due to a more rigid "binding" of the transmission to the accelerator, but off-road conditions leave no trace of this joy. The same is true when trying to park. It's one thing when there is a soft snowdrift behind, but now I need to turn around on a patch between the rock and the cliff. Reverse, throttle, but the Kuga is rolling forward. Crap! In order not to break the bumpers, I turn "in two pedals", releasing the brake only when, following a distinct clatter under the bottom, I feel a push in the right direction. And no Active Park Assist is an assistant here!

And the diesel Kuga is also noisy: the wind whistle heard in the area of ​​the A-pillars and the rear edge of the hood from 60 km / h on a gasoline car, here in all driving modes is complemented by a characteristic diesel rumble. And the vibrations are palpable.

However, from now on, diesel will be the second number in our market (at the end of last year, it beat the gasoline unit with a score of 2395: 1797). Ford's marketers are betting on the petrol EcoBoost - and counting on "boost", that is, sales growth to the level that Volkswagen Tiguan and Toyota RAV4 have.

Is there a reason?

Since 2008, 10,921 Ford Kuga crossovers have been sold in Russia - this is three times less than the result of Tiguan or RAV4 (and, by the way, a couple of Kia Sportage / Hyundai ix35), and only for the last year. On the other hand, the "rewrite", perhaps, was a success: Fords corrected almost everything for which Kugu had been criticized earlier. The car has become more spacious, more spacious, and most importantly, as promised in the Russian office of Ford, it is cheaper than the previous one!



The EcoBoost petrol four, new to the Russian market, should also become the engine of trade. It will not be easy to pour the washer fluid into the neck (with a yellow cap) located deeper than the previous one without sprinkling it on the surroundings. Opening the hood with the usual lever instead of a key is a pleasure. Notice how big a "stand" was needed for the lock loop!

Prices will be announced in March, when dealers will have democars, but it turns out that the most affordable front-wheel drive Kuga with 150-horsepower petrol Ecoboost will be cheaper than the 959 thousand rubles that were asked for its diesel analogue of the previous generation before the "sale". Taking into account that the base Toyota RAV4 of the new generation costs at least 998 thousand rubles ... There are chances!

Moreover, even the simplest Trend equipment includes, like the RAV4, an audio system, air conditioning and a push-button engine start. Trend Plus is plus dual-zone climate control and alloy wheels, Titanium is keyless entry. And in the top version of Titanium Plus - "bixenon", navigation, panoramic roof, leather upholstery ... Complement the "package" equipment list of options.

By the way, the American version of the new Coogee, Ford Escape, immediately broke its previous record of annual sales: 261,008 crossovers in 2012 against 254,293 cars a year earlier.

I jump into the salon. Yeah, we got by with pinpoint improvements. New three-spoke steering wheel with a more comfortable grip rim. Instead of the usual parking brake, there was a button for an electromechanical parking brake - and there was free space for a niche with a neat sliding curtain. The ERA-GLONASS system module was registered on the ceiling. The chairs, which I liked before, have become even more comfortable thanks to the elongated cushion and tucked sidewalls on the back.

SYNC multimedia system has received new "brains". Ford officials claim that its performance has increased by an order of magnitude, and the navigator is trained to plot a route taking into account traffic jams.

The interior design has not fundamentally changed - it still looks relevant. A button for turning on the steering wheel heating appeared on the center console. It is high time!

After the upgrade, diesels disappeared from the range of engines - with a tiny demand, it is unprofitable to tinker with them. The petrol 2.5-liter 150-horsepower aspirated is combined exclusively with front-wheel drive: more than half of the buyers choose such cars.

The 1.5 turbo engine replaced the 1.6-liter. The power is the same, but the cooling of the air coming from the turbine in it is carried out by a liquid, not an air intercooler. Fuel consumption was reduced by 7%.

The previous 1.6 liter turbo engines (150 or 182 hp) gave way to the 1.5 EcoBoost engines of the same power already known from the Focus. Reducing the cubic capacity was achieved by reducing the piston stroke. The new motors made the Kugu a little more economical. They comply with the Euro-6 eco-standards and are adapted for 92nd gasoline, while previously only 95th was required.

I have a top-end 182-strong Kuga at my disposal. Rides not as vividly as you expect, acceleration to a hundred takes more than ten seconds. Superfluous "horses" are lost in the wilds of the all-wheel drive and the 6F35 six-speed automatic, which was included in the basic equipment of the Kuga (there is no longer a version with mechanics, since it did not find demand). Even in sport mode, the box shuffles gears with laziness.

I was only pleased with the fact that in manual mode the transmissions now change with the usual paddle shifters, and not with a key on the selector, which was inconvenient to use.

The old motor, when accelerated to the floor, squealed that there was urine, and the 1.5-liter one did not break down to scream. And road noises are now better muffled. Is the use of double-layer side windscreens influenced so much?

This is the result of the work of our specialists. The modernized Russian-assembled Kugi received additional noise insulation for the bottom, therefore, the acoustic comfort has significantly improved. You also criticized him in that comparative test ...

The chassis has not undergone any transformations. And it is right. Rideability has always been a strong point of the Kuga. In the sincerity of the steering effort, stability on the trajectory and the delicacy of the stabilization system settings, only the Volkswagen Tiguan can compete with the Kuga.

It's a pity we couldn't get a 150-strong turbo version! Judging by the technical data, it is not particularly inferior to the flagship. Therefore, I see no reason to pay extra for a more powerful modification. The motive for buying it can only be the equipment that is not available for versions with weaker motors. By the way, all the configurations have become richer. So, in the basic version of Trend (available only with a 2.5 engine), in addition to power accessories, an audio system, air conditioning, heated side mirrors, seven airbags, ESP and fog lights, LED running lights, automatic paddle shifters, and the MyKey system appeared.


The ground clearance is 198 mm and the sloping bumper allows you to confidently move on difficult terrain. For complete happiness, the multi-plate clutch lock is not enough.

Shortly before my trip to the Yelabuga plant, I got acquainted with the European version of the Kuga. With the exception of the Russian adaptation package (ERA-GLONASS, additional sound insulation of the bottom and all kinds of heating), everything is the same - both design and technology. Only the 182-strong Kuga in the sporting performance of the SL Line stands apart. Its body is decorated with an aerodynamic body kit, and the radiator grille and lighting equipment are decorated with black gloss instead of chrome. The key differences are in the suspension: stiffer springs, shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar are installed. In addition, the ground clearance is reduced by 10 mm. All this made the Kugu a little more collected and accurate in turns, but there is no fundamental difference in handling between it and the standard car. Now, if, in addition to the above-mentioned innovations, the Fordists had increased the power to at least two hundred "horses" ... However, what is it to us? The Kuga ST Line will not be on sale in Russia.

The flagship Titanium Plus version can only be equipped with a 182-horsepower engine. As before, the list of equipment includes a leather interior, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, a panoramic roof, mirrors with illumination of the door space and an electric folding drive, a contactless trunk opening function, an enlarged rear spoiler. And from the new - a self-parking operator, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, a rear-view camera, a navigator. For this version, only one additional option is offered - the package of electronic assistants.

In full ammunition, the updated Kuga is perceived as nobler and more luxurious than its predecessor. In the course of modernization, she got rid of many shortcomings, and in the next comparative test she will have a chance to win back.
