The best car batteries. EFB batteries. What it is? Truth and technology reviews Reviews of car battery manufacturers

Is it time to change your car battery? The variety of batteries on the market is so great that you do not know which one to choose? Which parameter to prefer: a large capacity or a powerful starting current? Which company is more reliable?

Let's try to figure out which battery is better to choose for a car.

How to choose the right

The easiest and most straightforward way to find the right battery for your car is to look at its parameters in the manual of your car. Or go to a specialized auto shop where you will pick up a battery from the catalog. You just have to decide on the manufacturer or price.

You can also look at the label of your old battery, if it is there, and if you are sure that you had the original copy specifically for your car model.

If you do not have such an opportunity and you choose the battery yourself, then the first thing to consider:

  • Does your car have a petrol or diesel engine?
  • what is the engine size?

According to these data, select the first parameter of the battery that suits you - capacity(amps/hours). Battery capacity is a parameter showing how much energy the battery will give out in 20 hours. For example: a value of 60Ah means that the battery will deliver a current of 3A for 20 hours.

The second main parameter is starting current. This parameter shows the maximum current that the battery can deliver within 30 seconds.

If you explain very primitively, then the battery capacity is responsible for how long it can turn your starter, and the value of the starting current will show how fast it will turn it.

Also on the marking of the battery, one more parameter can be given: “80 minutes” or “100 minutes”. This - " Reserve power". The figure shows how long a fully charged battery can deliver a current of 25 amperes.

Again, if very primitive, then this figure shows how much time you can drive a car with an idle generator.

Batteries are further divided into serviced and unattended. Make up your mind: if you like driving a car, buy a serviceable battery that you can monitor and carry out the necessary work to extend its service life.

If you are a busier person, you can take an unattended one. It has an almost hermetically sealed body and has been working for exactly as long as it has been working.

What options to choose

Engine volume

In general, a diesel engine car requires a battery with a larger capacity than a gasoline engine of the same size.

So for a gasoline engine with a volume of up to 1.5 liters, a battery with a capacity of 45-55 Ah is suitable. For a car with the same diesel engine, a capacity of 65 Ah will be optimal.

For larger engines, 2.5 liters and more, respectively 65 (gasoline) and 75-100 Ah (diesel).

These figures are, of course, very approximate. The exact values will depend on the specific car model and on what consumers are installed on board (the presence of air conditioning, an additional heater, a musical amplifier, etc.).

Manufacturing firm

The next parameter is the brand of the manufacturer. The choice here is very large.

It should be noted that, unfortunately, there is not always a direct relationship “a well-known brand is an excellent high-quality battery that will last you for many years” - operating conditions for a particular car largely affect the service life.

There are quite a lot of cases when a mid-range battery lasts 6-7 years without fail, and an expensive branded one bought in a salon dies after a year and a half.

Normal battery life is considered to be approximately 4 years under normal operating conditions. The main word here is “operating conditions” and in different cases the conditions can differ significantly: the annual mileage is 40-50 thousand km or 10 thousand km, the average winter temperature is -10 or -30. All of these factors affect battery life.

Video - which battery is better to choose for your car:

The duration of battery life is greatly affected by the number of full discharges “to zero” and the length of time during which the battery is discharged.

In any case, regardless of the price and brand of the manufacturer, when buying a new battery, you will be given a guarantee of only 2 years.

dimensions

The next parameter when choosing is the physical dimensions: length, width, height. It must fit in its regular place in the car and be fixed with a regular mount.

Positive contact location

In addition, be sure to check which side the positive contact is on the battery - on the right or on the left. If in your case the plus is located, for example, on the right, then the length of the positive wire is not enough to put the terminal on the instance in which the plus is on the left. And the design of most modern car batteries does not allow them to be “deployed” and installed on the other side.

Date of issue

When buying, pay attention to its release date. It may be marked on the label or on the battery case itself. If there is no release date on the battery, then you should think very carefully: buy it or not?

Numerous stories “bought a new battery, and he died after a year and a half” have a very common explanation. The battery left the assembly line, stood for six months in the warehouse of the plant, then went to the regional warehouse and stood there for another six months. From there he moved to the wholesale warehouse of your city, and only then he got to a specific store. How long he was waiting for you in this store is also a big question. So you may well buy a new battery that was released 2 years ago.

Which company is better to choose according to the reviews of car owners

According to reviews on various Russian auto forums, the most popular are batteries from companies: BOSH, VARTA, OPTIMA.

I am very pleased with the increase in recent years of positive reviews about Russian batteries, for example: "TITAN", "AKOM", "PILOT", "BEAST".

But let's be fair: their defective rate is somewhat higher than that of foreign manufacturers. This explains the multiple disputes on the forums: “I bought a Russian battery and threw it away after 2 years!” or “I bought a domestic one - I have been driving for 5 years and no problems!”

auto battery rating

Bosch Silver- recognized as optimal for year-round use.

Varta Blue Dynamic— the best winter accumulator. Sufficiently large starting currents at low temperatures.

Optima Red Top For those who love everything American. The batteries of this particular company are used in America on rescue and ambulance cars. It also has high starting currents at low temperatures and minimal wear with frequent discharges. Made using AGM technology (filled not with liquid, but with solid electrolyte).

Tyumen(Russian-made) - excellent inrush currents at very low temperatures, combined with a price that is 4-5 times cheaper than imported analogues.

Medalist- long service life in conditions of frequent discharges and low price.

Which car batteries are best for working in low temperatures

All parameters indicated for the battery are calculated for a temperature of +27 degrees.

In severe frosts (below -25), the battery capacity can be reduced by half. Therefore, in the northern regions, at low temperatures, it makes sense to install a battery with a larger capacity than the original one, for example, 65 Ah instead of the standard 55 Ah.

But at the same time, you should not get carried away: the capacity of a standard battery is correlated with the power of the car's generator. By installing a significantly larger battery, you run the risk that the generator will not be able to cope with its charging. This will be excessive, which can cause it to overheat and break. It is allowed to install a battery with a capacity of up to 20% higher than the original one.

Also, at low temperatures, the amount of cold start current of your battery matters. The higher this parameter, the stronger the starter will turn the engine of your car that has frozen overnight. When choosing a battery, try to keep this parameter at least 500.

If you live in a region with a mild climate, then think about whether you should overpay for a large capacity or starting current of the battery?

Things to keep in mind when choosing a battery

Attention: when buying a battery, be sure to carefully inspect its case for chips and cracks. Even slight mechanical damage to the case may indicate that the battery has been dropped or hit, which means that its case may be leaky and it may have internal damage.

If you buy a serviceable battery that is already filled with electrolyte, be sure to remove the plugs and check the electrolyte level. It should completely cover the plates.

Important: Avoid completely discharging the battery!

Each discharge of the battery "to zero" significantly reduces the life of the battery. Avoid situations in which the battery is so discharged that the warning lights on the car dashboard do not even light up.

It should be noted that in many modern cars, the computer does not allow the battery to be discharged to such a state and, when the voltage drops to a certain value, it simply turns it off.

Conclusion

Purchase batteries from well-known, market-tested companies about which you can find information and reviews on the Internet.

It is not always worth trying to buy an expensive imported battery. Very often, a cheaper battery performs its functions just as well. Just keep the contacts clean and avoid frequent "zero" discharges.

Since I am fat in Murmansk and we have severe frosts, when I changed my native battery, I took a new one with a capacity of 10% more.

    Oleg

When changing the battery, I was guided by reviews and was not mistaken. Everything else is listed in the manual for your car. By the way, I did not install a larger capacity battery, on the advice of experts. The generator of your car is designed for a certain capacity and it will not fully charge a large capacity, you will have an undercharge, which will quickly make the battery unusable. I experienced it myself when I was young.

    Ilgiz

I took the battery Tyumen 520 A and 60 A \ h. Machine 2109. Either it was undercharged, or it was restored. In general, after a year and 2 months I had to take a new one. As the saying goes, a miser pays twice.

    Alexander

I recently had to change the battery in my car. The previous one was 6 years old. Starting current 55 A/h. I took it with the same starting current. I drive a car all year round. Frosts are up to -35.

    Andrey

When choosing a battery, do not chase too much capacity. The difference between the native factory and the newly acquired should not exceed 10%. Those. if when buying a car there was a 55 Ah battery, then you need to buy a new battery with a maximum of 60 Ah. A higher battery capacity threatens to damage the generator. What it threatens on the way, it is understandable, I think to everyone. You will stand on the sidelines
And the second point - do not chase the brand. Much more important is the timely periodic maintenance of the battery and how you use it during operation - if you often turn on the lights and loud music with the engine turned off, the battery will not last long.

Nowadays, the choice of batteries is quite large, but you need to buy according to the operating instructions for your car.

I have had cars since 1997. I started with Moskvich-412. And on it stood the Tyumen battery. Proezdil 5 years, never failed, but of course, brought the density for the winter, charged to the stop, and sold it with it. Since then, if we are talking about replacing the battery, then I will definitely take the Tyumen and serviced one. All the same, at -50 in winter and +40 in summer, the density should be different. And they all worked and did not fail. Although, of course, the matter is not only in quality, but the attitude of the driver means a big role. Some people, in case of problems with winding, turn the starter to full discharge, and in fact, at the same time, the plates begin to collapse, well, how long will it last. It is reasonable and careful to treat everything and then everything will work.

    Artyom

Native battery welled up and there was a problem which battery to buy. I rummaged around on the Internet and made sure that expensive imports do not always need to be taken. There are similar domestic ones. The main condition: always look at the release date, it may turn out that it is new, but overdue, and then it's a disaster. I bought myself Bosch Silver and I can use it even in the heat, even in the cold. When buying, I carefully examined the battery so that there were no chips, cracks or other mechanical damage. The store warned that it would last longer to control the charge and not bring it to zero.

The regular battery worked for six years, tried to change it two years ago (at a crucial moment the car did not start), recharged it and safely forgot until recently. This winter, I purposefully decided to change it, I didn’t look at the brand much, I was looking for a battery with a starting current of 450 - 500 AMPS. Capacity - a maximum of 60, more is not necessary, why load regular units. Yes, another important point is the date of manufacture. It is from her that the battery life is counted. As a result, I bought Varta for 5500. Tyumen and this one stood nearby with a difference of 800 rubles. Decided not to spare money. Starting current 540 A, capacity 60 Ah, Niva Chevrolet car. I got up like a native, frosts, though not yet, but now I am calm.

    Ilya

Completely overlooked is such an important battery parameter as Cold Scroll Current (TCC). As a rule, they remember about it after buying a battery, and most often in winter in frost -20 ... -26, when the starter refuses to turn the flywheel even on a fully charged fresh battery. Well, or it turns, but the rotation speed is not enough to start the engine. This parameter is especially important for owners of cars with diesel engines, since it is much more difficult to start a diesel engine in cold weather than a regular gasoline one. As for car batteries in general, the quality of modern batteries is simply terrible, and both cheap and expensive ones work on the strength of 2-5 years. This is despite the fact that even 15 - 20 years ago, any battery quietly worked out for 7-9 years!

    Egor

A very dubious offer about serviced batteries. Firstly, you probably won’t find one anymore - they simply aren’t on sale. Secondly, if all manufacturers have switched to maintenance-free, then you need to understand that specialists work there, who understand what is better and what is hopelessly outdated.
And about the capacity, I also disagree! The charging current does not depend on the capacity, so you can exceed it twice - nothing will happen to the generator. Especially for those who live in the North. It’s better to spin normally once from a large battery than to poke around with a small battery, and then start it from a pusher.

    Alexey

I would like to note that the “discharge to zero” has a beneficial effect on nickel-cadmium batteries (found mainly on the “Japanese”). Since these batteries have a so-called "memory effect". But for lead, a complete discharge, on the contrary, is extremely undesirable. I would also like to add that European and Japanese batteries have different types of terminals. Accordingly, a non-native battery may simply not be suitable, even if everything else is taken into account (“polarity”, i.e. the location of the positive terminal relative to the case; dimensions - it only seems at first glance that they are all the same 🙂). And yes, it is advisable to take a battery with a current margin, so it will definitely last longer.

    Novel

I bought a Topla 66 battery in the fall, I never regretted it, we have frosts below -30 in Siberia, the car always starts!

    Kostya

You need to see what engine size and which engine is gasoline or diesel. Based on this, we select by amperes, by starting current and by reserve power. I took myself a maintenance-free battery, but in general, whoever has the time and desire can also be serviced (more durable if you follow it). Well, you need to see who made this battery. I had cases when a promoted brand lasted only 3 years, and a cheap one plowed for 5 years. When choosing a battery, I always look at the date of manufacture, as well as the condition, so that there are no chips or cracks. I try to follow the rules.

    Edward

I have a battery with a high capacity "Beast". For our northern latitudes, this is a good option. Even at -40 the car starts immediately.

    Andrey

I had to change the battery for my Nexia. I was guided in the choice primarily by the one that stood there before. A little-known manufacturer, but has worked out its full. I advise you to take a battery with a slightly larger capacity for the winter.

    Svetlana

The starting current of 55 A / h is quite enough for the RENAULT LOGAN 1.4 and it is better to take ours, TYUMEN BATTERY, personally verified.

    Andrey

Just like the speaker above, I prefer and recommend our domestic Tyumen or Kursk batteries. At a cost of at least two times cheaper than foreign ones, but they work no worse, well, or not noticeably worse. Moreover, for a hundred years nothing fundamentally new has been invented, the same case, the same acid and the same lead plates. The question arises - why then overpay three or four prices for Fuel, Bosch or Mutla? Yes, and it is worth supporting the domestic manufacturer! Moreover, they will last for about the same time. By the way, perhaps not everyone knows, but at the end of the battery life, it can be returned for quite decent money (500-1000 rubles).

    Michael

I had a Bars Silver 60 Ah on my car, which lasted 2 winters, and on the third it began to die rapidly. I lit a cigarette 4 times from other people's cars, then I bought a Flagman 62 Ah, and I have been driving to this day for the fourth winter. So I don’t advise taking Bars)) I’ll say right away that the electrics in the car are in good condition, the contacts are good, the generator gives out a normal charge, the power wires are duplicated, i.e. Akum died not from malfunctions, but by itself.

    Anton

I took a Varta 60 Ah battery. It has been working properly for more than two years - so far I am satisfied. In winter, the car starts without any complaints, even at -30.

    Basil

I work as a salesman in an auto parts store and from year to year I observe the same picture - battery buyers in 80% of cases take the wrong batteries for their car! They prefer to buy larger capacities, they say they are both “stronger” and “more powerful” than those recommended by the automaker. And after all, they don’t even think that this is an additional load on the generator and undercharging of the battery (moreover, chronic). And then some bring back, they say he does not hold the container - change it! Well, of course it doesn't! He's really in the city traffic jam and does not charge! Comrades! Buy batteries for your car! It was not designed and developed by idiots!

    Yuri

It is necessary to understand the principle of operation of the battery, when discharging, crystals form on the plates, and when charged, these crystals dissolve again, and so with a deep discharge, the crystals become huge and do not completely dissolve when charged, accumulation occurs and subsequently closes the bank.

    Sergey

In principle, when choosing a battery, it is difficult to decide, especially for novice drivers. If determined by the latest technologies, then it is better to choose a gel one. Such a battery does not have evaporation from the electrolyte, it can be transported in any position, the plates in the device do not crumble until the end of the service life. But this type is best used only in warm or moderately cold weather. In this case, it is better to have two options - gel + lead-acid. Many more begin to get lost when there are many advisers, and the seller is ready to sell you anything, just to make a profit. There are sites that help you choose a battery for those. characteristics of the car, without any purchase of goods.

I have a Tyumen battery, the fifth winter. 60 Ah, 520 starting current. I let it down once, corny did not have time to recharge, I rode five kilometers in the cold for a week, and then the car stood for ten days without movement. Perhaps I will change by next winter, but in Tyumen in any case.

    Vladimir

After 5 years, the battery fell into disrepair, sparing no money, I bought a new Bosch company. And I don’t regret it, I’ve been skating quietly for the seventh year now, nothing bothers me. Of course, we don’t have severe frosts, but at -20 it starts up without problems.

    Oleg

I had Varta Blue Dynamic left the factory for 4 years, and if it weren’t for my sloppiness, I left it for a month in the garage with the door open. it may be departed and more. But alas, he died. I had to worry about buying a new one. At first I wanted to take as much as the 70th, but consulted with an electrician in time. Buying a more powerful one does not save in the winter with an easy start, but adds hemorrhoids. The generator does not fully charge such a battery, moreover, the load on the "horseshoe", i.e. on the diode bridge of the generator can lead to its failure, and this is if you cannot replace the diodes in the generator yourself, then you need a service with all the consequences. Therefore, on the advice of an electrician, I took it with native parameters, but only Tyumen. I took it not because of money but on advice. It's been five years now with no problems.

    Vyacheslav

About these batteries, I have to work a lot with them, I can only say that miracles happen. So a battery of an unknown brand, bought in a stall near the Moscow Ring Road in 1997, lasted 9 years, Varta Silver - 3 years, and did not survive 3 winters. Tyumen often stands on the special equipment that I service, according to reviews, it has been caring for 3 years on tractors. And marriage is everywhere. THERE WAS a case of battery Patriot died faster than I drove from Voronezh to Lipetsk.
You can philosophize a lot about capacity, charge strength, starting currents, but on MTZ tractors there were previously two batteries of 225 amps 6 volts in series and they were charged by a very modest 35 amp generator, and on the MTZ-50 there was no generator at all in the early versions, but a dynamo and somehow, after all, she charged them .... These two are 225

    Alexander

I prefer to take Tyumen batteries, they are inexpensive and the quality is quite decent. And since the car is domestic, I don’t see the point of taking something more expensive. On average, they work for me for 4-5 years, then I change, despite the fact that he has not yet been killed. Yes, and once every six months I do a control recharging, since in a car it still does not fully recharge.

    Ivan

I live in Novy Urengoy, this is in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Winter 9 months and installed Webasto, give a big load on the battery. From my own experience, I rely on Tyumen batteries, the capacity is the same as that of a standard battery. Tested on many cars, always confident start of the internal combustion engine.

    Denis

I thought for a long time which battery is better to choose for my car, and now I will be wise in choosing it (I didn’t even know about many parameters). The battery will probably last much longer now.

    Andrey

When buying or replacing a battery, you still need to be guided by a sense of proportion. There are no "eternal" batteries, 2-3 years and for replacement. Is it worth throwing money away for "brands" and other marketing tricks?

    Nicholas

On all three machines. which I bought only in salons, there were VARTA batteries. So, in 2108, he retired for 7 and a half years, on Lada Priore, 4 years, and on Veste for 1 year. So I put Tyumen on the last two, though I didn’t choose stronger, as many try, believing that it’s easier to start a car in winter, but by charging current. Powerful does not mean better, the capabilities of the generator are limited by its output current and it will not always be able to charge your powerful battery. And its undercharging in winter will manifest itself, one day you will not start your car. I've had Tyumen on the Prior for 5 years, and I've been driving on Vesta for two years now. True, I regularly check the charge of the battery and the operation of the generator.

    Vitaly

You should always be guided by the manual for the car, when choosing any spare part for it, this also applies to the battery. Here I read reviews, many take more powerful ones, they think that in winter it will be easier for them to start the car. And the fact that the generator works with a greater load and does not fully charge the battery is forgotten about. Ask any electrician at the service and they will tell you that the current should be the same as that of the regular one that was on the car from the factory. And as for imported ones, now we have enough good reliable domestic-made batteries, so don't waste your money. The performance and reliability of the battery depends only on ourselves, with quality care, the domestic one will live for 7-8 years. It is checked up on own experience.

    Anatoly

The battery is undoubtedly one of the most important vehicle equipment. It is not possible to start the engine without a battery with a starter, and indeed, is it necessary in the modern operation of a car. I still remember the times when cars were easily started with a crooked starter, or in a simple way, with a special handle adapted for manually cranking the engine. Now they are absent in the vehicle configuration and correctly. I have had several times in my life when the battery failed right on the road, or completely discharged, or closed for some reason. If it was possible to start the engine from the pusher, I drove to the place where the battery could be replaced without stopping, without turning off the engine. There were cases when the generator failed. In this case, I had to ride on a battery, praying all the way so that its capacity and charging would be enough to get there. Therefore, when I select a battery, first of all, I look at its indicator as its possible operating time until it is completely discharged. And so in general, I buy a battery with a capacity corresponding to the displacement of the engine. For a 1.6 liter engine, 55-60 ampere hours, respectively. And also so that in size it sits well in the nest and is fixed with a car mount.

  • Ivanovich

With good handling of the battery, constant care, recharging, most batteries are guaranteed to provide power to the car for 3-5 years. When the battery terminals are constantly dirty, wet, when the battery is not firmly fixed in the seat, what can be expected from it? Only premature wear and closure of cans.
If I buy, then batteries with the BOSCH brand, although all this is a convention.

Spiral stacking of plates 2 The most reliable battery 3 Best discharge resistance 4

Any car, from the domestic classic VAZ to modern models of the Japanese brand Toyota, without a battery turns into a large iron tarantass on wheels. The battery cannot be called the heart of a car, but no one doubts the importance of its value. On the market there are models of various manufacturers, differing in the principle of operation and basic parameters.

The best of them take part in our review. The rating was compiled based on the characteristics of the models and the opinions of auto maintenance specialists. A certain degree of influence on the ratings was also provided by user reviews with personal experience in operating some of the presented batteries.

The best domestic lead-acid batteries

Despite all the patriotism, buyers often complain about the insufficiently good quality of domestic goods. There are many reasons for this, but in the context of the battery rating, it does not matter, because the battery is what our country can really boast of. Large Russian manufacturers not only purchase modern equipment that meets the requirements of the most technologically advanced European factories, but also try to improve the skills of their personnel in order to ensure the maximum quality of manufactured products.

The reasons for such attention to the battery are due to the fairly rapid development of the automotive market in Russia and the CIS countries. Over the past few years, the domestic car market has been confidently holding its own in the top five largest markets in Europe, which, of course, leads to a rapid expansion of the country's car fleet, which must be provided with batteries. In addition, a fairly large number of factories of foreign automobile companies have been built in our country. Batteries of domestic companies are also supplied for these vehicles for primary configuration.

Finally, it is worth noting the most banal reason - Russian products are better than any other adapted to Russian conditions and the needs of customers. Batteries are no exception, which perfectly resist the frosts that prevail in our country for most of the year. Well, the cost. Nevertheless, domestic buyers are quite “greedy”, and therefore often prefer cheaper products, which most of our manufacturers belong to.

In this category, we will consider only lead-acid batteries due to their wide distribution and low cost. Which battery deserves your attention and a place under the hood of a car - see our rating.

4VOLT Classic

Most affordable
Country Russia
Average price: 2300 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.2

The budget battery for the VOLT Classic car, despite the low price, fully complies in its parameters with the requirements for batteries by manufacturers of domestic VAZ and foreign cars (even such advanced ones as Toyota). The low price of the battery is not the reason for saving lead - it weighs no less than more famous models of similar power. It is sensitive to deep discharge, and after a couple of such “accidents” it can become a contender for a replacement.

However, there are still disadvantages. In the reviews of many owners, there are complaints about poor resistance to negative temperatures. If in the summer and in the off-season there are no questions to the battery - it is enough just to control the electrolyte level in the banks in a timely manner (the battery is serviced), then in cold weather a completely different picture is observed. As soon as the thermometer approaches -20 ° C, the battery begins to lose charge intensively, and at the factory it may turn out that there are only 1-2 attempts to “everything about everything”.

3 ISTOK

Deep discharge resistance
Country Russia
Average price: 3450 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.4

Among domestic batteries, ISTOK can be safely called worth its price. Previously, it was transported from Dnepropetrovsk, but now the production of this brand has been established in Kursk. Owners of domestic VAZs and foreign cars (including such "Japanese" as Toyota and Mitsubishi), who have chosen the Istok battery for their car, positively characterize the endurance and reliability of this battery in their reviews. With regular maintenance and charge level control, it can work for more than 4 years, which is considered an excellent result for domestic products. Its secret lies in the fact that the lead plates of the battery contain a melt of antimony, thanks to which the battery demonstrates “survivability” even after a deep charge.

At the same time, in the conditions of urban driving in the summer, boiling of the electrolyte can be observed, especially in traffic jams. It will be possible to fight this phenomenon only by timely restoring the level with distilled water, otherwise the battery will drastically reduce its resource, and will disappoint the inattentive owner already in the first winter. It is this category of users that may be dissatisfied with the characteristics and reliability of the ISTOK battery.

2 Acom Standard

The only battery with a charge indicator
Country Russia
Average price: 4300 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.6

This battery is just right to call strange. On the one hand, a fairly high cost (at the level of the leader of the rating) and good "passport" data. On the other hand, rather mediocre performance in real tests. According to experts, there is “not enough lead” in this battery, which is why it does not tolerate frost well. Up to -15 - everything is fine, the indicators are at the level of leaders among lead-acid batteries, but as soon as the temperature drops below "twenty" and the battery simply stops showing signs of life. Thus, the conclusion suggests itself - if you live in a fairly warm climate, which is rare for our country, you can purchase a battery from Acom, in all other cases you should pay attention to more frost-resistant models.

Nevertheless, this battery model is quite popular on the market - it is readily taken by taxi drivers, sales representatives and people of similar professions, whose nature of work implies a large daily car mileage. Yes, and many city dwellers who are accustomed to using a garage may not notice the average frost resistance of this battery. And the presence of a charge indicator and attentiveness on the part of the owner will allow timely maintenance of the battery, which, of course, will extend its service life.

1 Tyumen Battery Premium

The best domestic battery
Country Russia
Average price: 3900 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The products of the Tyumen Battery Plant have been the leader in many independent battery tests for several years now. All experts and real users note how well the battery tolerates frost. Even at -30 degrees Celsius, this battery produced the best starting current. And this means that even in the most severe conditions, the Tyumen battery will not let you down and will start your car. By the way, the cost with such good characteristics is not at all higher than most competitors. The only drawback that occasionally pops up in the reviews is the need to add distilled water quite often to maintain the same high performance.

In addition, owners in their reviews often describe situations where a conventional alarm in cold weather can put the battery to zero in just 7-10 days. So, if the car has a long parking in harsh conditions, this factor should be taken into account. In addition, the great popularity of this brand in the domestic market has given rise to many fakes, which, under the guise of original products, cause serious damage to the image of this brand. Genuine Tyumen Battery Premium batteries, when independently tested, demonstrate performance comparable to imported VARTA batteries.

The best foreign lead-acid batteries

Russian people are greedy for foreign brands. It just so happened that "foreign" is considered better in quality than domestic. Now, of course, we are not talking about China, to which most people have a biased attitude.

Foreign batteries were no exception, which Russian buyers are snapping up like hot cakes, even despite a slightly higher price. In our ranking you can get acquainted with the top three of them. There are “Germans”, whose products are famous all over the world, and “Americans”, who seem to be from another world, and “Turks”, who have literally flooded the domestic market in recent years with their inexpensive, but already quite high-quality goods.

In this category, we will again look at the most popular type of batteries - lead-acid and decide which part of the world should be trusted to start and run all the systems in your favorite car without interruption.

4 BANNER Starting Bull

The safest
Country: Austria
Average price: 6700 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.3

This brand is designed for European cars (participates in the factory equipment of the VAG concern), but can be successfully used on domestic VAZ models and even in such Japanese brands as Mitsubishi and Toyota. Reliable frost-resistant plastic housing is designed for long-term operation in various conditions, including harsh Russian winters. The design is protected from short circuit and completely eliminates the possibility of self-ignition. A special labyrinth cover prevents possible overheating and boiling of the electrolyte.

In the reviews of the owners of the BANNER Starting Bull battery, there are no complaints about the operation of the battery. Even at -18 ° C, the cold scroll current corresponds to the declared one, and allows you to cope better than others with starting a car engine. The only factor causing customer dissatisfaction is the high cost of the battery. At the same time, they all have no doubt that the BANNER Starting Bull is worth its money, and installing this battery on an expensive car is expedient and fully justified.

3 Exide Premium

High starting current
A country:
Average price: 5400 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.4

This, in the truest sense of the word, overseas battery (USA) has quite interesting characteristics. In particular, the starting current issued “according to the passport” is 640A. This is the best indicator among all lead-acid batteries known to us. But it was not without obvious shortcomings. A large number of buyers complain that Exide Premium "lives" only about 3 years. A service life of 5-7 years is a rarity. The second problem - the price - the highest in the ranking.

The secret of the fact that the reviews of the owners are so different is quite simple - the battery, although “overseas”, is produced on our continent. Those batteries that are produced in Spain have no complaints at all - they serve more than five years with normal operation of the generator. Polish or Belarusian Exide Premium even differ in appearance - they have cheaper plastic, and the stickers are glued carelessly. In any case, the best confirmation of the liquidity of the battery is the availability of warranty obligations from the manufacturer.

2 Mutlu Calcium Silver

Best price
Country: Turkey
Average price: 4750 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.5

This Turkish battery was able to surprise a lot of people. In terms of parameters, it is not so far behind the leader of our rating, but it has a lower cost. The main drawback is a slightly stronger decrease in the starting current when the temperature drops to -30 degrees. Is it worth it to choose a obviously worse battery, while saving only 500 rubles? We do not advise, however, the decision, of course, each owner makes independently.

When buying, one should take into account the great popularity of the model on the market, and, as a result, the presence of a certain proportion of fakes. Only attentiveness of the buyer and his selectivity in relation to the seller can serve as protection. Only in this case, you can be sure that the original products are used. Under these conditions, the characteristics of the battery are fully consistent with those declared by the manufacturer, and the properties of the battery are not much inferior to more expensive brands of batteries.

The best car battery manufacturers

Almost always, buyers try to purchase products from well-known brands. Nevertheless, the declared characteristics can be any, and therefore, taking a product from some kind of "noname" there is a great chance to stumble upon outright junk. To prevent this from happening to your battery, take a look at our list of the best car battery manufacturers.

  • Bosch. This company from Germany is not the first time appears on the pages of our site, and all because it produces a very extensive list of all kinds of equipment. Like all other products, Bosch batteries are of excellent quality. Among the main advantages, it is worth highlighting the reduced self-discharge rate, confident operation even at -30 ° C, as well as the ability to recover after overdischarging.
  • Varta. Another great brand with notorious German quality. Differ in long service life and resistance to corrosion. It is also worth noting the presence of a sponge filter, which is a kind of flame arrester, which eliminates the possibility of fire. At the same time, Wart batteries are among the most budgetary on the market today.
  • Topla. One of the oldest manufacturers of car batteries. This Slovenian company has been known to domestic motorists since the 70s of the last century, when sales began in the USSR. Topla produces calcium and hybrid batteries, which are distinguished by high starting current and good performance at low temperatures.
  • Mutlu. This Turkish company was founded in 1945, but to this day remains in the market leaders, thanks to good quality and constant development of technology. The company's product range includes three series of batteries: Standart, Taxi and Start-Stop. All of them are characterized by stable performance, low self-discharge and vibration resistance. It is also worth noting the tradition of the company - the presence of a charge indicator on each battery. Finally, about the cost - Mutlu products belong to the budget class.
  • Akom. So we got to domestic manufacturers. Founded on the basis of old Soviet factories in 2002, the company quickly understood how to conquer the market. Thanks to cooperation with foreign manufacturers of batteries, the purchase of new equipment and retraining of personnel, Akom quickly managed to become one of the leaders in the domestic market. As the manufacturer himself notes, their batteries have not only a low self-discharge rate due to the use of calcium, but also such an interesting function as “self-shutdown”, which turns off the battery when the charge level reaches 95%.
  • TAZ. It is also the Tyumen Battery Plant - one of the largest suppliers of batteries in the Russian market. It is distinguished by a very wide range of manufactured goods: these are car batteries, and batteries for diesel locomotives, and the release of electrolyte. In general, car batteries from the city of Tyumen stand out for their relatively low cost and excellent performance at low temperatures.

1 VARTA Blue dynamic

Best Performance
Country: Germany
Average price: 5300 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

German quality. After these two words, you can finish with the description of this battery. The Blue Dynamic model has been on the market for more than a year, and with each update it only gets better. In 2016, AKB became a silver medalist in the test of one of the most famous auto magazines in Russia. Surprisingly, the reviews of real users are quite contradictory: some argue that their Varta either refuses to work in the cold, or completely “died” after six months or a year of use. But the majority still notes a very long (up to 7 years) and trouble-free use.

The secret of such diverse reviews is quite simple - due to the great popularity of the brand, there are fake products on the market that have nothing to do with the original batteries. The best way to avoid being scammed is to use the services of official brand representatives and trusted sellers. This is the only way to be sure that all the characteristics of the battery declared by the manufacturer will be able to ensure long and unpretentious operation. At the same time, it does not matter at all which car the battery is installed on - in an old VAZ model or a modern Toyota. The main thing is that it receives the necessary charging current (it should not exceed 10% of the battery capacity). Since the battery is maintenance-free, it practically does not require the attention of the owner - except occasionally check the terminals for oxidative processes and keep the case clean.

The best AGM batteries

We have already raised the topic of AGM batteries at the very beginning of the article. And now it's time to consider the best of them, but first, let's re-discuss the main features of this type.

It should be borne in mind that AGMs are designed for the most modern cars, in which a very large number of all kinds of electronics are installed. All these consumers require high performance and stable operation. Also important is a high tolerance for short trips around the city, when the battery may not have time to sufficiently charge from the generator. All these requirements are met by AGM batteries. But there is, unfortunately, a huge drawback - the price. With a similar capacity, this type of battery is on average 4 times more expensive than conventional lead-alkaline batteries.

Which model to choose in order not to regret the money spent - see the rating.

Bosch is a leader in many areas and the battery industry is no exception. Buyers note a high starting current (760A), which starts any car without problems. In addition, measurements taken with a 100A load plug show that the battery holds voltage well. Such parameters are essential for urban conditions, when the generator often does not have time to charge the battery in a short trip. Significantly reduces the degree of self-discharge and increases the resistance to premature shedding of plates high-tech grid design - PowerFrame. This gives a high margin of safety when working in conditions of critical temperature changes in frost and heat.

The battery type is maintenance-free, and apart from monitoring the charge level and keeping the output terminals clean, does not require any maintenance from the user. The labyrinth cover with the central ventilation interferes with loss of electrolyte. The owners in their reviews also point to the excellent resistance of the battery to vibration loads - a special separator with high penetrating ability will not allow the plates to short circuit, and a special technology for contacting them together eliminates power loss and significantly increases battery life.

The use of a carbon additive in the production of the cathode plate makes it possible to increase the charge rate by about one and a half times, which is undoubtedly a favorable factor for maintaining the working condition of the battery. The presence of a reinforced three-dimensional diamond mesh guarantees an increase in electrical characteristics and an increase in its lifespan. The terminals are covered with swivel removable caps. There is a transport handle.

How to determine battery polarity?

The polarity of the battery determines the location of the terminal elements. Common are schemes, direct and reverse polarity. To determine the polarity (sometimes it is marked 1 - domestic type), it is necessary to position the battery in front of you, so that the current-carrying terminals are at the bottom. If the plus is on the left and the minus is on the right, then such a battery is considered to be of direct polarity.

If the terminals are in a symmetrical display, that is, plus on the right and minus on the left, then the polarity is reversed. This is the main difference between the two types of batteries.

What to look for when choosing?

When choosing a good car battery in 2018 - 2019, you need to pay attention to the following points:

  • It is best to purchase a battery that is recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. This can be found both in the service book of the car and on the plate under the hood of the car.
  • It is necessary to take into account the overall dimensions, since if they are different from the standard ones, then it may not fit into a regular place.
  • It is important to take into account the battery power, the parameter of which is indicated in Amp-hours. There are many different tables and methods that allow you to choose the power according to the vehicle model. But as a rule, it is necessary to take a battery of the same power that was installed by the car manufacturer. When there is not enough power, the result is poor performance and reduced battery life. An excess of power threatens with the impossibility of fully charging the auto generator and, as a result, premature failure.
  • Serviceability, which can be of three types. These are subject, little subject and not subject to service.
  • Pay attention to the polarity of the installed and purchased battery. This parameter may affect the physical impossibility to reach the current-carrying terminals.
  • Take into account the value of the cold start current, which is an important factor when operating in severe frosty conditions.

For more information about all the intricacies of choice, see the video:

Serviced or unattended - which is better?

When choosing a battery, the question always arises, what to choose? On the battery that does not require maintenance or purchase a battery that is subject to periodic maintenance.

The term service implies the fact that in this case it is possible to unscrew the caps from the battery cans and make sure the electrolyte level, check its density, its color. You can also inspect the lead plates, and the formation of crystalline sulfates on them, observe the boiling process during charging. In simple words, see all the insides of the battery. This is undoubtedly a plus, you can observe the quality of the purchased and operated battery. But at the same time, at the same time, it is necessary to monitor all the parameters of the battery being serviced, monitor the level and quality of the electrolyte, the tightness, in order to prevent leakage, and top up the special liquid in a timely manner.

The maintenance-free battery does not have plugs to access the banks. It is completely soldered and therefore hermetically sealed. For beginners, choosing this type is always the best solution. However, it is impossible to check the voltage on each bank with voltmeters and understand which one is out of order, it is impossible to measure the density of the electrolyte. A simple and golden rule applies here, operate correctly and performance will be ensured for a long time.

The introduction of EFB batteries was fueled by car manufacturers who, in pursuit of fuel economy and the environment, developed cars with Start-Stop technology, which turns off the engine at a traffic light and instantly starts when you press the gas pedal. It is clear that from such a mockery, simple batteries failed without even a year, tk. frequent discharges and charges led to the flowing of the active mass from the electrodes, and the battery loses its energy capacity.

What batteries are made using EFB technology

Over the past 5 years, EFB technology has been used in almost every third battery production in the world. The first among imported batteries, the EFB line appeared at Varta in the form of a Start-Stop series. Naturally, Bosch immediately had one in one the same Bosch S5 EFB. They were followed by other suppliers of automotive power supplies to German conveyors - Banner with the Running Bull line, Moll EFB and others.

After it became clear that the era of cars with the Start-Stop system had come to Russia, domestic factories also began to develop EFB batteries. The first such battery was produced by the AKOM plant - the grass-green Ultimatum battery, which cost was not so distinguishable from imported analogues. Then the Titan EFB and Tubor EFB battery factory from Nizhny Novgorod appeared on store shelves. They were followed by the Turkish Mutlu EFB, although at the same time they invented their own marketing abbreviation SFB for simple acid batteries (apparently wanting to see only three letters in their battery models). Slovenian TAB EFB and so on.

But there is one “but” - the assortment line of EFB batteries is limited, because few people will buy a battery for mass-produced cars, a battery twice as large as the 6-ST type familiar from ancient times.

How to charge an EFB battery

The EFB battery is charged in the same way as a calcium maintenance-free wet battery. Of the nuances, you may encounter the fact that these batteries were originally made for the conveyor, and as you know, they have their own quirks, so you can find batteries with hard-to-screw caps that require either a special key or skillful hands.

With an old battery - this is not life.

Yu.I. Detochkin

The crisis hit everything, and the battery market is no exception. Buyers look primarily at the price. Even the owners of prestigious cars are in no hurry to splurge on expensive AGM and EFB batteries, which a few years ago everyone predicted unconditional dominance.

It’s even somehow embarrassing to talk about amps, coulombs and degrees, if the mass consumer chooses what is cheaper. On the other hand, budget products often lack quality, and savings can cost a pretty penny... This time we decided to focus on inexpensive batteries.

Battery cheaper?

At first, the search for the most inexpensive batteries of the most popular dimension 242 × 175 × 190 mm gave a modest result - only five products priced from 2610 rubles for a Podolsk battery to 3002 rubles for a Tyumen one. Not enough for a full review. They raised the price bar to 3,500 rubles - six more batteries were added. But what about without high-profile foreign names - Varta, Bosch, Mutlu? In addition, domestic batteries close to them in price were left behind - for example, AkTeh. Along the way, it turned out that some oriental brands did not set “crisis” prices for their products at all: the most expensive battery was not Bosch at all, but the Korean Solite for as much as 5,000 rubles!

As a result, we scored two dozen batteries. Let's see how price is related to amp-hours and coulombs.

The purchase was carried out in a retail network in April - May 2016. The research results refer only to this sample and cannot serve as a basis for evaluating all products of a particular brand.

MAIN CRITERIA FOR ASSESSING BATTERY QUALITY

Reserve capacity. Shows how long the car will last with all the energy consumers turned on (headlights, windscreen wipers, ventilation system), if its alternator has deteriorated. Measured in minutes. The higher the score, the better.

Reduced starting energy with declared current. Characterizes the energy of the battery in the starting mode. It is measured in kilojoules. The higher the score, the better.

Reduced single current starting energy at -18 and -29 ºС. Allows you to compare the current characteristics of all batteries under the same conditions, regardless of their passport data. Simply put, the higher the energy, the more attempts to confidently start the motor, ceteris paribus. It is measured in kilojoules. The higher the score, the better.

Receiving a charge at a constant external voltage. Indicates the ability of the battery to recover from a deep discharge. In practice, a battery that accepts a charge better than others will charge faster when traveling. All batteries passed the test.

Note. Technical measurements were carried out by specialists from the NIITs AT 3 of the Central Research Institute of the Ministry of Defense of Russia. The test results refer to a specific sample of batteries and cannot be used as a characteristic of all products of the same name as a whole.

And will it do so?

The overall impression of the test results is painful. There are three main reasons for frustration. Firstly, sellers still slip stale goods, albeit with guarantees, smiles and seals. Secondly, it is unpleasant that in the Russian frost, out of twenty brand new batteries, eleven failed. Thirdly, out of two dozen batteries, only two really fought for victory - Tyumen Battery Premium and Varta Blue Dynamic. Their separation from rivals was serious. And, curiously, the advantage is obvious both with and without price.

Run through the first columns of the table, which shows the reserve capacity of brand new batteries. In parentheses, we give the actual "volume" of electricity that the buyer pays for. By analogy with refueling: you ask to fill a full tank, and the tanker splashed only on the bottom. But there is a difference: a “mistake” of a gas station will not lead to anything terrible, but a discharged battery, as the pros say, “turns sour”. Often this is irreversible: it loses its capacity and loses its efficiency. We were ready for this, so before the start of the tests, as usual, we charged all the batteries to capacity. And you need to do this before you put the battery on the car. Our measurements confirm this.

Now about the "overpayments" for the brand. The miracle did not happen: all the little-known batteries accumulated together at the bottom of the table. The most annoying thing is that the prices for many of them are not cheap at all. There is clearly no point in overpaying for such imports. And the first half of the table was filled with familiar names - we advise you to focus on them.

First thing determine the size of the battery. He must be guaranteed to fit in his workplace - in the engine compartment or trunk. Simultaneously determine the polarity. An old battery will help here: look - plus on the right or on the left? Often the length of the wires does not allow you to connect a battery of the “wrong” polarity.

When choosing a battery brand, we strongly recommend be guided by the list of our winners recent years. Don't be fooled by the low price - there are no philanthropists on the market. The brand determines the value. As a rule, with the same dimensions, serious companies offer batteries of different energy capacities (for example, different declared amperes and ampere-hours). It is better to take the maximum, even if it is a little more expensive.

Not worth buying products that have units of the “A / h” type on the labels or in the passport. This indicates the technical illiteracy of their compilers and raises doubts about the quality.

The purchased battery must be charged without fail. After charging and soaking (storing the battery disconnected from the charger) for 10–15 hours, the voltage should be 12.5–12.7 V. If measured immediately after charging, the readings can significantly exceed the actual open circuit voltage.

All in place

To identify leaders and outsiders, we have introduced a point system. In each type of test, the best and worst results were taken and assigned five points (maximum) and one point (minimum), respectively. Each of the other participants received an intermediate score proportional to their position between the leader and the outsider. For example, if when measuring the reserve capacity, the leader showed the result of 112 minutes, and the outsider - 78, then the participant with the result of 87 minutes gets 2.06 points. If the battery fails in one or another type of test, it receives 0 points.

The total score based on the results of measurements is the arithmetic average of five intermediate estimates. Then we divided it by the price of the battery, after which we again brought it to a five-point scale. So the final score is essentially value for money.

Out of competition in our tests were Tyumen Battery Premium and Varta Blue Dynamic batteries. Taking into account the much more attractive price, the “Siberian woman” climbed to the top. If we did not take prices into account, Varta would be the first. However, the “foreigner” has one more paradoxical advantage over the Russian battery: it is easier to find it on sale. It sounds illogical, but it is true, and not only in Moscow.

Output? You can not buy a battery, looking only at the price tag. Savings can go sideways. Better take some time to get acquainted with the results of our expertise. Good luck with your purchase and stable voltage in the on-board network!

It seems that the name of the battery should remind the buyer of the well-known Exide brand - the difference is one letter. Hence, perhaps, the high price. However, the Korean battery turned out to be frail: all scores are below two points. And at -29 ºC, she asked for mercy: the voltage sank below the prescribed 6 V. Taking into account the price, she took the last place in the all-around.

Weak "energy" did not hold up in the Russian frost: after 15 seconds of torment, the tension dropped sharply - that's it, we arrived. The reserve capacity is useless. The overpricing only exacerbated the negative effect. Penultimate place.

We bought this battery after seeing the price tag that is prohibitive for a low-profile brand. What if this is a new market leader? But in the cold, the voltage quickly dipped below the mark, and the price-quality ratio determined the place at the tail of the table.

How it all started well ... The price is only 3000 rubles. And even the reserve capacity is indicated in minutes. But then the carriage turned into a pumpkin: ratings below two plus a failure after four seconds of operation in the cold - the voltage is below 6 V.

The cheapest battery in the selection. It does not matter that the declared current is only 420 A, as long as it works. But the difference between the real mass and the promised one was 3.38 kg - lead was not reported. Bottom line: all scores below two points. And in the cold "electricity is over."

The price is reasonable, but it looks like they saved money again on lead plates. At -29 ºС, the battery failed: the voltage dipped below the waterline. The heaviest battery in the test: lead was spared. But a miracle saved the battery from failure: at the time of purchase, “it” had only 14 minutes of reserve capacity. The Siberian "bear" has firmly settled in sixth place both in terms of characteristics and adjusted for price.
