The Van modification with a short body debuted first in 1982. This car was equipped with diesel turbine and atmospheric engines, was produced in versions with a standard, semi-high and high roof and had Canvas Top and Metal Roof modifications. A year later, a Wagon modification appeared on sale (with a body in the size of the F-segment). In addition, the Pajero Estate modification, which has a long body, was added to the lineup. In 1989, the Pajero Super was launched into the series, which differed from the basic version in a seven-seat interior, walnut panel and door lining, and body color. The most expensive modification was the 3.0 Super Exceed, which had a sunroof, cruise control, power accessories, dual air conditioning, power seats, a leather steering wheel braid and other options that distinguished the top version.

The main power unit for the Pajero is a 4-cylinder 2.5-liter diesel 4D56 (SOHC), which, depending on the modification (atmospheric version or turbocharged), has a power of 85 or 94 hp. At the same time, the turbocharged version has a higher torque, reaching a value of 226 Nm at 2000 rpm, while the atmospheric version has this parameter of 196 Nm. In the top trim levels, a 3-liter V-shaped 6-cylinder 6G72 (SOHC) gasoline engine was used, which was distinguished by the presence of an ECI-MULTI injection system and a relatively low “revving”, developing a maximum power of 150 hp. at 5000 rpm, but the torque at the same time reached its value of 231 Nm at only 2500 rpm. Fuel consumption with it is 13.7 liters "per hundred" in mixed mode. Different versions also differed in the volume of the fuel tank: 60 or 90 liters.

The first generation of the Mitsubishi Pajero SUV had a fairly progressive design of the front suspension - independent torsion bar, thanks to which the habits of the "wild cat" differed for the better, for example, in such a parameter as geometric cross-country ability, which is very important for an SUV. In addition, the front independent suspension significantly increased the smoothness of the ride. The car has an all-wheel drive transmission of the Part-Time type - a switchable front axle without a center differential, so you can’t constantly move around in all-wheel drive.

Over the ten years of its existence, Pajero I has not undergone significant changes in terms of security systems and means. The regular set included only three-point belts, and even then in later versions of expensive trim levels, and, of course, by modern standards, the Mitsubishi Pajero safety level is low. In crash tests, first-generation cars also could not boast of high results, but this is the same for all SUVs of those years.

If you treat technology correctly and with love, then the "cart" will become a helicopter. Only after 5 years of operation of the Mitsubishi Pajero I was the overhaul of the “killed” engine, the cook body, the ball bearings, anthers of the front axle shafts and tie rod ends replaced. Also, the spring bushings were replaced with “Nivovsky” trimmed silent blocks, I note that no one has done all this before me, hence the conclusion - in 24 years the car was made capitally only once, and this is “super reliability”. Mitsubishi Pajero I, although the car is outdated, it suits me in everything. This is my "weekend" car, so to speak. I love to ride it for fishing.

Advantages : excellent cross-country ability, enviable maintainability, long service life and the availability of original spare parts, which, by the way, are quite inexpensive.

Flaws : if not for our diesel fuel, then we would not have raised the economy of foreign countries through the purchase of spare parts for our cars.

The car is very reliable (if everything is changed, lubricated and checked in time), made for uncompromising operation in off-road conditions. Mitsubishi Pajero I is a real jeep, with a forced connection of the front end, an increased and decreased row of transfer cases. Off-road performance is top notch. "Diesel" and clearance allow you not to be afraid of almost any puddles, edges and sand. Somehow I even had a chance to pull the UAZ out of the sand. With the turbine removed, and even with the automatic, the dynamics, frankly, are useless. And the cost is much higher. So I advise you still not to remove the turbine, pour good oil and do not turn off the car immediately after stopping (let the turbine blades cool down - it will live longer). Cruise speed on the highway - 100.

Advantages : tank, cheap to maintain.

Second generation 1991-1999

Pajero II was released in 1991. The emergence of a strong competitor has stirred up the SUV market. The reason for this was a fundamentally new transmission concept - Super Select 4WD. This system, which controlled the distribution of force between the wheels, opened up new horizons.

The concept of an SUV was largely laid down in the first generation. Then the car simply improved and adapted to the trends of auto fashion. At the peak of the glory of the first generation, it was replaced by the second, which was a great marketing ploy.

The body has increased significantly in size. In addition, Pajero 2 received four different performance variations:

  • hard roof;
  • folding roof;
  • divided into sections;
  • cast.

Pajero II was equipped with a third row of seats, adjustable shock absorbers (moreover, the adjustment was made directly from the cockpit), a winch under the bumper and a hydraulic lift system to change the clearance.

Third generation 1999-2006

In 1999, the third generation comes out. Almost every detail of the SUV has been redesigned. New engines were created:

  • gasoline 6G74 GDI with a volume of 3.5 liters;
  • gasoline 6G75 with a volume of 3.8 liters;
  • diesel engine 4M41 with a volume of 3.2 liters.

Although the engine base was slightly affected, the electronic equipment was subjected to an innovative shake-up.

The appearance of the third generation Pajero was marked by a significant redesign of early models:

Should we expect the release of the new Pajero?

Many fans of the series are interested in the question: will the fifth generation Pajero be produced. With a high degree of probability, Mitsubishi will still release it. The presentation of concept cars has already been, and it will not be very reasonable to expect new restylings of the 4th generation. The concern did not openly announce the release of Pajero 5, but many factors indicate that this will happen in the coming years.
