Tests and ratings of tires for crossovers. Summer tires for crossovers: comparison of manufacturers Tests of summer tires for crossovers

Many car owners underestimate the importance of changing tires according to the season. And if it is clear that in winter, in cold weather, improved traction on icy and snowy roads is necessary, then not everyone understands the need to use special rubber in the summer.

However, there are reasons why it is simply necessary to change tires to summer ones:

  • too soft at high temperatures, which reduces handling and increases braking distance;
  • soft winter tires wear out quickly on hot asphalt;
  • Using winter tires in summer increases fuel consumption.

Thus, the main characteristics by which we choose tires are the ability to dissipate heat and wear resistance. Also, the best summer tires for crossovers should drain dirt and water well for normal off-road travel, and have good grip on hot asphalt and in rain.

In many respects, the BFGoodrich G-Grip can easily be called the best summer tire in the crossover category of 2019. With the cost of a modification with a diameter of 17 centimeters (235/45R1794Y) being about 5,700 rubles, this is an ideal option in terms of cost/quality ratio. The tire is characterized by a unique design and thoughtful arrangement of blocks. The tires have proven themselves well on wet/dry tracks. The well-known American manufacturer invests a lot of money in research, so all of its products, including this model, are manufactured using modern computer technology. The tread pattern has a pronounced directionality, due to which the effect of aquaplaning does not occur under any conditions. It should also be noted the high quality of the tire blocks located in the shoulder area, which guarantees very high responsiveness of the wheels to manipulations with the steering wheel.

Bridgestone Potenza S001

An excellent high-speed summer tire, characterized by improved comfort and quiet driving characteristics. The cost is not the smallest - a model with parameters 215/40R17/87Y costs from 11,200 rubles. But these tires, to be honest, are worth the money. The presence of sufficiently wide grooves contributes to high-quality water drainage. The edges of the blocks have a sharp edge that can literally cut through the water film, minimizing the risk of falling into hydroplaning. The rigidity of the side rubber provides excellent stability/controllability of the crossover regardless of driving speed. It is impossible not to mention the central rib of the tire, which improves the stability of the car when driving at very high speeds.

This model belongs to the category of mid-price class tires (modification 235/55 R17 99Y costs from 7,200 rubles), but at the same time it has decent characteristics with a fairly long service life. The model deservedly received third place in the ranking of the best summer tires for crossovers in 2019. Like other best representatives of the class, the Toyo Proxes T1 Sport has a wide central rib and large blocks. The stability of the route along the route is complemented by the presence of an extensive drainage web, which is responsible for the rapid drainage of water. Self-locking sipes are another advantage of the tire, which has a Y speed index, allowing you to travel at speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, withstanding loads of about 780 kg. According to reviews from domestic car owners, the tire does not like bad roads, on which it wears out faster than usual.

Michelin Latitude Cross

Considering the 2019 rating of the best summer tires for crossovers, we cannot ignore the model, which in terms of cost occupies an intermediate position between the premium and mid-price segments. Thus, the cost of a tire with the index 225/75 R16 108H8500 starts at 7,800 rubles. These tires cannot be called high-speed (the H index indicates that they are designed for a maximum of 210 km/h), but for a crossover this is more than enough. But the load index of these is 108 units, that is, they are capable of withstanding a load of 1 thousand kilograms. Rubber is characterized by stable behavior on roads with any type of surface, regardless of weather conditions. The tread pattern is selected in such a way as to minimize wear without compromising performance parameters. Users note the ability to save fuel and excellent handling of tires. What this tire doesn’t like is driving on roads that require a grader.

Dunlop SP Sport Maxx

This model also deserved a high place in the TOP of summer tires for crossovers in 2019 due to its excellent directional control, regardless of the condition of the highway. At a cost of 6,150 rubles, the 215/55 R16 93Y modification is distinguished by the presence of a very durable sidewall with Kevlar inserts, confident braking, and is relatively quiet. High-speed (Y index), demonstrate an excellent balance of grip characteristics. Among the disadvantages, not the best wear resistance should be noted. If you like a comfortable ride, don’t count on such tires: they are quite hard. But, we repeat, for its segment this is one of the best products, both in terms of cost and basic performance characteristics.

If you use your crossover for off-road driving relatively rarely, then this model of summer tires may be the best choice for you. In the list of the best summer tires of 2019 in the crossover segment, Hakka Black 2SUV, according to our version, takes sixth place. For 8,900 rubles you get fast and comfortable tires, which on dry concrete hold the road no worse than the premium Continental ContiPremiumContact 5 tire. However, there will be no problems with handling on wet asphalt. A very good indicator of smoothness, at the level of Michelin Latitude Sport, but at the same time they are very noisy, this is one of the main drawbacks of the model (as well as the entire “dual” series). They feel confident off-road. What else can you say about this model? Wear resistance is not the best - up to 30 thousand is still normal, and then problems are possible, but it depends on your luck. If you choose summer tires for your crossover on the Hakka Black 2SUV, we advise you to buy only native (made in Finland) tires - the quality of tires produced in other countries can really disappoint you.

Continental ContiPremiumContact 5 SUV

For lovers of comfortable driving, this summer tire, without exaggeration, will be an excellent choice. Moreover, along with an amazingly soft ride on dry/wet surfaces, the model is characterized by an excellent coefficient of adhesion to the road surface. You can guarantee that these will be some of the quietest tires you'll ever encounter in your life. However, as always happens in life, every advantage turns into some kind of disadvantage. In this case, we can clearly assume that since the rubber is soft, it is not very durable. So it is: the real resource is about 30 thousand kilometers. Well, there are also problems with strength, so if you drive on bad roads, why do you need softness if if you get into a serious hole, even at an average price, you risk getting a “hernia”?

Michelin Latitude Sport 3

Yes, you read that right. These are summer tires and are intended for crossovers. And, despite the presence of the word “Sport”, the speed index here is by no means sporty (V, up to 240 km/h). So, in the rating of summer tires for crossovers of size R18, these tires are absolutely natural, being a direct competitor to the previous model from Continental. In other words, the characteristics of these tires are almost identical - the highest softness of ride, amazing silence, excellent grip on any type of surface.

And, of course, the same disadvantages - low service life and frankly weak strength parameters. The sides here, frankly speaking, are flimsy, so if you like to lean against curbs, you’ll have to leave this habit in the past. But is there any good news? Unlike ContiPremiumContact 5, this tire has higher wear resistance - it will have to be changed on average every 40 thousand kilometers.

Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV

If you need comfortable tires that have a fairly strong sidewall, and at the same time you are on a budget, your choice is the EfficientGrip SUV model. The softness of the ride here is such that you will feel as if you are driving an expensive sedan, and the noise level will be the same. But the main thing is the rigid sidewall, which allows you not to think about safety when driving in urban conditions. In a word, this is a good middle peasant, including in terms of cost (from 6,500 rubles). There is also a peculiarity - the grooves are too wide, because of which pebbles are thrown directly onto the wheel arches. When buying a set of such tires, take care of purchasing fender liners and make high-quality sound insulation of the arches.

Japanese tires do not need recommendations, but the cost is impressive (almost 10 thousand rubles), the most expensive tires in our rating of summer tires for crossovers. Moreover, for that kind of money you are purchasing a far from ideal product. With a number of excellent characteristics (it keeps the track well, overcomes any puddles well, simply without noticing them, demonstrates fast braking on wet/dry asphalt or concrete, has a hard sidewall, there are no problems with hydroplaning) it is characterized by increased noise. In general, all Japanese tires, when compared with similar European tires, are noisier. If noise and high cost don't matter to you, well, these are very good tires in all other respects.

Toyo Proxes CF2 SUV

Another good option at a reasonable cost (7400 rubles). Users unanimously note the good handling of the tires, their ability to keep track even at very high speeds when entering fairly sharp turns. Comfortable, excellent resistance to aquaplaning. Unlike many of their classmates, they are characterized by a tread pattern that does not throw stones. Good off-road “skills”. But it changes its properties dramatically in cold weather. At temperatures below plus 5 degrees it becomes noisy and harsh, that is, these are tires for the southern regions of the country. As for the sidewalls, they are reinforced here. Summarizing the above, we can say that there will always be a place in the rating of summer tires for crossovers of this model.

Hankook Ventus S1 Evo2SUV K117A

At a cost of 6,200 rubles, this is a decent quality Korean equivalent to its classmates from Michelin. It holds the road at a solid “4” on wet and dry roads. But this is also average. The only thing we can highlight is the softness of the ride, especially when coasting. Braking does not cause any particular complaints. But a very significant drawback is a weak resource. Many note that the limit for these tires is 15 thousand kilometers. It is not surprising that the Ventus S1 R17 is by no means the leader in the 2019 ranking of summer tires for crossovers.

Kumho HP91

Affordable tires that do not have outstanding performance. The solution to the problem of the side cord can be called interesting - it is not rigid. And yet, he takes the blows very confidently. At a cost of 6,300 rubles for the 265/65 R17 112V modification, this is a completely acceptable option - a little harsh, but withstanding a mileage of about 40,000-50,000 kilometers. Yes, there are problems regarding grip properties, especially in rainy weather. It is also quite noisy. Not the best choice if there are no financial problems.

Cordiant Comfort 2SUV

One of the most budget options (from 4900 rubles). You can call this tire a domestic analogue of the Continental ContiPremiumContact 5SUV. Equally comfortable and soft, but much less wear-resistant. In addition, it does not hold the road so well; it can skid much earlier than its analogues. Low noise, but subject to mechanical stress. In a word, the most affordable model at a price.

A worthy competitor to the previous model in cost, but not in quality. If the R16 modification costs from 5,400 rubles, then the R19 costs 11,000, but these are the best summer tires for crossovers in the lower price segment. They perform well during quiet driving, but do not like speed and wet roads. Unlike the Black series, it resists hydroplaning poorly, but has stronger “shoulders”. Demonstrates excellent smoothness without compromising handling. And again, buy only “Finn”; tires produced in Russia may disappoint you already in the second year of operation.

Summer tires for crossovers have slightly fewer requirements than winter tires. Of course: there is no slippery road, there is no mess of sand and snow, and, in fact, driving a car on the highway is a pleasure. But still, compared to other types of cars, it is crossovers that need more careful selection of tires. We will analyze the most popular brands of tires for crossovers, present some interesting facts and, of course, tell you which manufacturer of “shoes” for crossovers lives up to the expectations placed on them.

The difference between summer tires for crossovers. What is important to consider when choosing them?

Summer tires for this type of car must have:

  • Highly rated handling on different types of surfaces.
  • Low noise
  • Resistant to being pulled to the side in unusual situations, for example, on an irrigated section of the road.
  • High quality pattern and rubber density.
  • Rolling resistance
  • Maximum effective braking
  • Resistant to high speeds.
  • Wear resistance.

Naturally, this is not a complete list of criteria that simply must be taken into account in order for the ride to be soft and confident. Remember, not all cheap summer tires for a crossover are worthy of a motorist's attention. Try to pay attention to tire manufacturers that have been verified by the owners. It is very important that your safety, vehicle maneuverability and strong grip are not compromised due to low-quality tires.

Which tire manufacturers and specific models are suitable for a crossover?

The most interesting models are presented by the German company Continental. They have really practical and comfortable tires that can withstand even slight overloads. We recommend paying attention to ContiCrossContact LX2 and their “brothers” – 15-18 mm ContiCrossContact AT.

The latter have a curious bidirectional pattern, symmetrical, with three longitudinal block ribs. In addition, there are a couple of open zones, and as a result, the tires provide the best grip on any type of surface. The merit of self-locking straps in the ribs is increased tread rigidity. So this model will not have problems with clutch. Reviews for the Continental conticrosscontact lx2 are almost always positive. The only thing that confuses the owners is the price, but you have to pay extra for a quality product.

Car owners also like the manufacturer Pirelli Cinturato. It is distinguished from all by its environmental friendliness and durability. It has the standard set necessary for a good smooth ride. Rubber, which does not become such a test for nature as regular ones, and a very flexible price range. Yes, Pirelli has every chance to become the new favorite among crossover owners. Size 14-16 inches. The pattern and features are pretty standard, but Pirelli has a huge advantage over other tire companies. After all, it was Pirelli that was able to satisfy the directives from the European Union regarding new tire markings and environmental protection requirements. That's why they were included in the original equipment of BMW cars. So this manufacturer clearly deserves the attention of crossover owners.

Reviews of the Pirelli cinturato p7 tires are clear: they hold the line perfectly both on wet asphalt and at high speeds. There is only one problem - off-road capabilities. In a rut, the car will wander, so it’s better not to leave the road. As for wear resistance, it depends on your luck: some use it for four seasons, while others become disappointed after just one season.

How to choose summer tires for a car: what to look for

Try to look for models that can be described as safe, practical, and with a low percentage of wear resistance. It is best to choose tires recommended specifically for your vehicle. Which ones exactly can be found on the car manufacturer’s website. Remember to pay attention to:

  • Wear resistance percentage

Choosing the best tires for your car is a task that every car owner tackles with greater or less success. Finding a suitable option that meets both mandatory and individual requirements requires some experience. In this sense, crossover tire tests and SUV tire tests become a source of necessary information.

Compare and choose: SUV tire ratings

When studying the behavior of tires in off-road conditions, it may turn out that downforce, wheel slip, grip properties, sidewall strength, traction on grass, slopes, bumps and potholes do not meet expectations. Also, many 4x4 tires leave much to be desired in terms of noise and harshness, which negatively affects ride comfort. Efficiency, noise level, accuracy of reactions to steering wheel turns, braking distance and resistance to aquaplaning - all this is determined during testing.

Test results will provide:

  1. Obtaining information about the behavior of off-road wheels in extreme conditions, directional stability when driving straight and when cornering.
  2. Comparing the performance of off-road tires from different manufacturers, determining the reliability of summer, winter studded and non-studded, all-season models in urban conditions and off-road.
  3. Possibility to choose sports tires or models for compact cars based on expert opinions.
  4. Purchasing car tires with a tread pattern that reduces rolling resistance to optimize fuel consumption.

To this end, TyreTrader offers to create your own rating of tires for crossovers or a rating of tires for SUVs by reading the tests of authoritative publications: German magazines "ADAC" and "Auto Bild", Ukrainian "Autocenter", Russian "Behind the Wheel" and "Autoreview", Finnish "Tuulilasi", French "L'Argus". Tire tests for SUVs, top reliable inexpensive tires for crossovers, news, videos, reviews - useful and interesting information is offered to car owners.

A group of independent automotive experts has compiled a rating of summer tires for crossovers in 2019. Tires for all-wheel drive vehicles differ significantly from standard models in a number of design features. The proposed review will allow domestic car enthusiasts to more confidently navigate the diversity of the modern tire range.

Premium class tires with asymmetric tread provide a significant reduction in braking distance, effective and safe control at high speeds up to 270 km/h, including on dry and wet road surfaces.

Developed on the basis of advanced technologies, the Michelin Primacy 3 model differs from similar analogues in its excellent grip on the road surface and increased service life.

Installing a complete set has a positive effect on reducing the noise level inside the cabin. The new product has successfully passed independent extreme testing, so it deservedly occupies a leading position in the annual ranking.

Premium tires for summer use guarantee excellent traction and grip characteristics throughout the entire speed range. The list of design features includes a combination of soft and hard components that ensure confident cornering.

Computer calculation of the tread pattern made it possible to increase the size of the contact area and eliminate aquaplaning due to the optimal configuration of drainage grooves.

The test showed that a car equipped with such tires:

  • Excellent road holding on wet asphalt;
  • confidently negotiates turns;
  • has a shorter braking distance.

The Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV, developed using FuelSaving technology, boasts:

  • 10% lighter frame;
  • more functional tread pattern;
  • the presence of innovative components in the rubber composition.

During testing, reduced rolling resistance was confirmed, and accordingly, consumption characteristics were improved by 3-5%. The new model with a size of 225/65 R17 has every reason to claim the status of “best summer tires for a crossover” in 2019.

The top 10 best crossover tires of 2019 with sizes 205/55 R16 include another new product from Goodyear.

Developed using ActiveBraking technology, the high-speed model guarantees:

  • high coefficient of adhesion to the road surface;
  • reduces the car's braking distance by at least 8% and rolling resistance by 17-18%.

The test drive confirmed the stability of performance characteristics across the entire range of standard and extreme test tests. The model range is presented in several size options, including the most popular size in light crossovers: 205/55 R16.

Bridgestone Dueler HP Sport tires, unique in many respects, are designed for prestigious mid- and high-price SUVs.

The list of design features of the new model:

  • increased, thanks to NanoPro-Tech technology, resistance to temperature influences;
  • Rigid sidewalls ensure safe stopping in case of a tire puncture.

Test checks of the set with standard sizes 235/65/R18 confirmed comfortable handling and stable driving parameters on different road surfaces, moderate noise at high speeds and full service life when operating the SUV on roads with crushed stone and gravel surfaces.

A characteristic feature of the tires of this model range is their increased strength and resistance to external influences. These parameters are determined by the presence of aramid fiber in the material, which is also used in aircraft tires.

Tests carried out by independent experts confirmed that the tire material reinforced with the Nokian Aramid Sidewall component begins to deteriorate only when the maximum load increases by at least 10%.

The asymmetrical tread pattern with Trumpet Grooves drainage channels reduces the likelihood of aquaplaning and noise levels typical of high-speed driving.

The Pirelli brand tire range is famous for its increased reliability, service life, comfort and stable road safety.

The Pirelli Scorpion Verde summer tire model is designed taking into account the requirements of speed conditions. Increased strength and resistance to operational loads is facilitated by special reinforcement of the frame and breaker.

The list of advantages of asymmetric tread design:

  • noise level reduced by more than 20%;
  • increased contact area with the road surface;
  • the profile of drainage channels eliminating the effect of aquaplaning;
  • stabilization of vehicle stability when cornering.

All performance characteristics are maintained throughout the assigned resource, the duration of which is increased by 12% compared to similar analogues.

Universal in many respects, summer tires Vredestein Sportrac 5 can be installed on high-speed city SUVs and off-road vehicles.

The design combines the advantages of a lightweight, weather-resistant reinforced frame and a universal asymmetric tread pattern that ensures driving safety across the entire speed range.

The profile of the drainage grooves minimizes the effect of aquaplaning and promotes reliable adhesion of the rubber to the road surface.

Low-noise and affordable tires from the Japanese brand Toyo are included in entry-level crossovers and small SUVs. Handling and braking parameters meet the requirements of modern standards.

The manufacturer positions Toyo Proxes CF2 SUV tires as the optimal model in terms of price and performance for operation at moderate speeds.

Color coding allows you to select a model with increased wear resistance, lower rolling resistance or improved grip.

The test of summer tires for crossovers in 2019 confirmed the right to be present in the top ten tires of the Korean brand Hankook Dynapro HP2 RA33.

The tread pattern is characterized by effective drainage properties, so even at high speed there are no aquaplaning phenomena. The symmetrical design helps the car maintain stability on roads with sharp turns.

The test drive confirmed excellent tire alignment. The spot wear typical of budget-level models is absent on the tires after a mileage of 70,000 kilometers.

Budget tires

The following tires are inexpensive and reliable:

  • European Matador MP-82 Conquerra 2;
  • Chinese Maxxis HP-5 Premitra;
  • Chinese Kumho Ecowing ES01 KH27;
  • Korean Nexen NBlue HD Plus;
  • Serbian Taurus 701 SUV.

In conclusion, it should be noted that the tire range is constantly updated, so in the second half of 2019, other, no less advanced models may appear, claiming top status.

If you are reading this material, then most likely, select a set of summer tires for your crossover. Let us immediately note the fact that in the comparison there are only road tires of the SUV size (Sport Utility Vehicle), because the average modern crossover (often with only front-wheel drive) spends most of its life in the city and on asphalt roads, and the “technical” ones Tires with a pronounced “evil” tread are definitely inferior to “civilian” tires both in handling and in comfort of movement on asphalt.

The review included popular tires in the segment, which were tested in different conditions by at least two publications. By the way, about the tests - the results of three tests were taken as the basis for the rating.

The first of them was organized by the German magazines Off Road and SUV Magazin. Tests were carried out in winter at the Dunlop test site in Mireval in the south of France. Yes, yes, summer tires were tested in winter, because in this area during the “cold” season the temperature is consistently around 20 degrees Celsius, which is quite consistent with our summer conditions. The Germans tested 6 types of tires with dimensions 215/65 R16.

The program included braking on wet pavement from 80 km/h, braking on dry asphalt from 100 km/h, measuring the maximum safe speed when maneuvering, resistance to longitudinal and lateral hydroplaning, as well as noise and fuel efficiency.

Another German magazine, Auto Bild Allrad, tested 19-inch tires. In addition to standard tests on dry and wet asphalt, the wheels were tested for traction in off-road conditions. The results of these tests were predictably low, so they are not taken into account in the final ranking.

The third series of tests was carried out by the domestic magazine Autoreview. The tests took place in the USA at a special testing ground where different types of “parquet” wheels were examined. The program included tests similar to the Auto Bild Allrad.

Continental ContiCrossContact UHP – summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

Speaking about the Continental ContiCrossContact UHP, the manufacturer first of all claims the bionic contour of the tread pattern, also known as “cat’s paw” technology. Its main essence is an asymmetrical tread pattern with powerful side blocks and four or five drainage grooves, depending on the tread width, which guarantees the ContiCrossContact UHP tire excellent handling on wet and dry surfaces, even at high speeds. In addition, the official description states that the tire exhibits excellent braking and handling characteristics.

ContiCrossContact UHP is a special tire for powerful all-wheel drive vehicles. Its characteristics - including short braking distances and increased cornering stability - are fully consistent with the requirements of 4WD vehicles such as the Porsche Cayenne or BMW X5. For special wheel sizes, there are tires of 23 and 24 inches, which is relevant for the tuning market and high speeds. By the way, the tire is available in several speed indexes V, W, Y and Z (for speeds from 210 km/h to 300 km/h).

TEST RESULTS

German tires performed excellently when braking on wet asphalt, and overall deserved high marks. A fairly important factor is the predictability of Continental tires - loss of traction when maneuvering on dry surfaces occurs a little earlier than with Pirelli, but this happens more smoothly, which allows you to react to the situation in a timely manner. In addition, the low weight and rolling resistance of the ContiCrossContact have a positive effect on fuel consumption, which also contributed to the overall high score.

Among the minuses, it is worth noting the tendency to understeer on dry surfaces and the high price, but otherwise these tires are excellent for everyday use in city and highway conditions.

Note that all tests involved non-identical models of the Continental brand. However, they are all aimed at cars in the SUV segment. In addition, the results allowed us to combine them into one row. All tires performed equally confidently in all disciplines, demonstrating mainly excellent balance.

Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV - summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

The Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV tire is designed for light SUVs, crossovers or SUVs. In other words, everything that fits the definition of the American abbreviation Sport Utility Vehicle.

The manufacturer claims that the tire provides excellent fuel efficiency thanks to the new Fuel Saving technology, without losing any driving properties. In addition, the Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV summer tire is environmentally friendly - the manufacturer also reports this. However, security and balance of properties are much more important for the client. This is also one of the strengths of the Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV.

TEST RESULTS

Goodyear tires performed consistently average in most tests, only slightly behind Continental and Pirelli. At the same time, American tires showed high resistance to lateral aquaplaning and also turned out to be the quietest. Stable handling in any conditions allows us to recommend the Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV for purchase.

The positive picture is overshadowed by unpredictability during emergency maneuvering and low fuel efficiency. For this reason, lovers of aggressive driving are better off choosing tires with more “sporty” characteristics (see below).

Pirelli Scorpion Verde – summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

Especially for the Sport Utility Vehicle segment, Italian tire makers have packed all the technologies previously available only in tires designed for light sports cars into the Pirelli Scorpion Verde summer tire, aimed at use on crossovers.

First of all, the tires are made from environmentally friendly materials and do not contain aromatic materials in the rubber mixture, thereby reducing the harmful impact on the environment both during production and operation. The tread pattern largely repeats that of the flagship P-Zero Silver model, however, due to its use under heavy load conditions, Scorpion Verde also has its own technological features. In particular, four wide drainage channels, as well as a network of multidirectional channels, thanks to which water is quickly and efficiently removed from the contact patch. In addition, the optimized arrangement of the tread blocks allows for extremely confident maneuvering on the road with low noise levels. In addition, the asymmetrical tread pattern allows the tire to evenly distribute pressure in the contact patch, due to which the contact patch area is always maximum. At the same time, despite the fact that Pirelli Scorpion Verde is designed for crossovers and SUVs, its main elements are the city and the highway.

TEST RESULTS

Italian tires turned out to be very effective when braking on dry surfaces, and in general they showed a rather “sporty” character. Pirelli allows you to “burn out” well on the track, but the relatively low result in rain conditions does not allow these tires to be considered universal. Pirelli Scorpion Verde can only be recommended for use in dry, hot summer conditions.

The disadvantages of the Pirelli include a noticeable tendency to oversteer and a high susceptibility to wear. And in terms of fuel consumption, the Scorpion Verde turned out to be the worst, both according to Off Road/SUV Magazine and according to measurements from Auto Bild Allrad.

Hankook Dynapro HP2 RA33 4 562 – summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

The high-performance summer tire Hankook Dynapro HP2 RA33 is designed for comfortable and powerful SUVs driving primarily on public roads. When creating the tire, technologists paid special attention to three characteristics. As a result, it was possible to reduce the noise level by 4%, improve grip on wet surfaces by 8% and significantly reduce rolling resistance compared to the previous generation tire.

Enlarge image The tread of the Hankook Dynapro HP2 RA33 tire ensures effective removal of water from the contact patch with the road, reduces the risk of hydroplaning in the transverse direction, and also improves traction on dry and wet roads. “Acoustic” slats - specially shaped slots - reduce noise levels. Increased rigidity of the center rib improves steering precision. The component stiffener, consisting of individual blocks, reduces tire wear during cornering and at the same time improves handling. The increased width of the tread and a balanced frame contribute to a more even distribution of pressure in the contact patch and make braking more effective.

TEST RESULTS

In tests of “crossover” tires, the product of the Korean chemical industry showed the most contradictory results. On the one hand, Hankook Dynapro tires turned out to be better than Pirelli and Goodyear in braking on wet asphalt, while also showing a low noise level.

However, these wheels have relatively poor resistance to aquaplaning, long braking distances on dry surfaces, and low fuel efficiency due to their large weight. Thus, Hankook Dynapro exhibits both positive and negative properties in both dry and rainy weather.

It’s worth noting that in absolute terms, Hankook are not that bad. In braking on a dry surface from 100 km/h, the result of Korean tires was 37.9 meters, against 35.1 meters for Pirelli (a difference of 2.8 meters), and 36.4 for Goodyear (a difference of 1.5 meters). Based on the combination of qualities, Hankook Dynapro HP2 is suitable, for example, for residents of rainy regions who rarely travel out of town.

Michelin Latitude Sport 3 – summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

For the summer season of 2014, Michelin is introducing a new road tire with a sporty character for a wide range of SUVs - MICHELIN Latitude Sport 3. This is the third generation of road tires in the Latitude range for powerful crossovers from Michelin.

Even before the start of sales, the new product from Michelin had already been recognized by many leading automakers and received homologation for the primary equipment of such advanced SUVs as the Porsche Macan, BMW X5, Volvo XC90. This recognition was made possible by improving several of the most important characteristics for consumers: reducing the braking distance on wet surfaces by 2.7 meters compared to the previous generation MICHELIN Latitude Sport tire, but also significantly improving the tire's mileage, durability and handling.

TEST RESULTS

Tires from the French manufacturer turned out to be somewhat “illegal” in our review, as they were tested only by Auto Bild Allrad magazine. However, it is impossible to completely bypass the once leading supplier of Formula 1 tires.

In tests by a German magazine, the Michelin was rated slightly better than the Pirelli Scorpion Verde. This is justified by the very high resistance to longitudinal and transverse aquaplaning, low noise tires and low rolling resistance, which affects comfort and fuel economy. However, the high price and poor maneuverability on both dry and wet surfaces led to the final low position in the ranking. One of the positive qualities of the Latitude Sport 3 is the unexpectedly high level of off-road traction.

Nokian Line (zLine) SUV - out of the competition - summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

Nokian zLine is another innovative development from an elite Finnish manufacturer, which has many outstanding characteristics. These tires will be an ideal “pair” for most powerful sports class cars and will allow you to fully unleash the potential of the vehicle without compromising your own safety. Like real ninjas, they will give their owner loyalty, accuracy in following all commands and complete silence. The most remarkable thing is that the tires are equally effective on dry and wet surfaces, and this at any speed. Extreme loads, difficult weather conditions or poor-quality surfaces will not be an obstacle for this fast road warrior!

Nokian z-Line is all about speed and safety. So, “smart” UHP silica was used. As a result of special cleaning, it generates extremely little heat, which guarantees the owner the durability of the tires and the longest possible preservation of all the original properties, and if you add to this the reinforced structure of these tires, then rest assured that they will serve you for many years. In addition, the mixture easily adapts to temperature changes, maintaining the tread in working condition even when the asphalt is “blazing.” This same property helps the tire to fully maintain all its characteristics on wet roads.

The basis for the high performance of the zLine is the modernized asymmetric tread. The outer and inner shoulder areas are equipped with powerful wide blocks, emphasizes an Avitech specialist. In this case, the outer shoulder is separated from the central part by a longitudinal rib, which limits the mobility of the blocks when in contact with the road, which increases the stability of the car on turns. The ribs located near the inner shoulder area, thanks to deep transverse grooves, ensure a stable position of the car on the road and guarantee precision control. These same grooves are responsible for removing moisture that enters the wide circumferential grooves separating the central ribs. Additional protection against aquaplaning is provided by the downward transverse grooves of the ribs of the outer shoulder area.

Comfort is also worth mentioning. Nokian zLine tires are virtually silent thanks to the semicircular shape of the recesses on the walls of the transverse grooves. Resembling the imprint of a golf ball, they effectively combat both external and internal noise.

TEST RESULTS

In the Off Road/SUV Magazine tests, Nokian Line SUV was able to demonstrate the best handling performance on dry asphalt, and on wet pavement the Finnish tires were second only to Continental. In the “Auto Bild Allrad” tests, the 19-inch zLine SUV showed itself in a similar way - high predictability and neutral behavior in any conditions should have brought Nokian first place in the overall standings of “parquet” tires, if not for one “but”.

At the very end of winter, a scandal broke out related to the “tire fraud” of the Finnish manufacturer. It turned out that for 10 years the company had been sending test organizers specially prepared “rubber”, the properties of which were often very different from serial tires. For this reason, it was decided to disqualify both Nokian models and invalidate the results.

Let's sum it up

Despite the fact that crossovers currently account for a large share of the new car market both in Russia and in Europe, there are still not very many tires specifically tailored for them. On the one hand, this narrows the spectrum when choosing “rubber”; on the other, the specifics of large tires do not allow frankly cheap manufacturers to enter this rapidly developing market. As a result, the difference in the properties of crossover tires from different manufacturers is not very large. So, for example, when braking on wet asphalt, the difference in the results of the wheels tested in Mireval did not exceed 60 cm (from 25.9 meters for Continental to 26.5 for Goodyear). Thus, in terms of safety, all the presented models performed positively, and you should choose based on your budget and your own driving style. By and large, any of the tested tires can be safely used on your “iron horse”. You just have to take into account the characteristics of each specific tire in order to choose the most effective option for specific conditions.
