Ford Focus 3 cramped interior. Ford Focus III: test on a Russian road. Apple from the apple tree

The steering is sharp - 2.5 turns from lock to lock. The car responds to the driver's hand movements quickly, but not harshly. The steering wheel of the previous Focus is not as sharp (2.9 turns), but it is better in terms of information content. The fact is that in the new model the hydraulic amplifier was replaced with an electric one and the feedback became somewhat artificial. However, if you don’t let things slide, the steering works great. The only thing that I don’t understand is why the turning circle has increased compared to its predecessor from 10.4 to 11 m. For a car of the “C” size class, this is unforgivably high.

The ride quality of the station wagon is, in my opinion, excellent. The roads of Serbia are at times no better than ours - there are potholes with cracks, sloppily applied patches, and humps with dips. The Focus Wagon's suspension softly and elastically handles almost the entire range of local irregularities and does not allow the body to sway. In the rear seats, the bumps are felt a little more, but even here it is quite comfortable. Compared to its predecessor, the chassis seems more rigid and collected, but at the same time it “rounds out” irregularities noticeably better. In addition, the new generation model is quieter. The noise from the tires is still present, especially in the rear seats, but it has become less intrusive. However, it all depends on the choice of tires. But at high speeds the wind whistles very quietly and the overall noise picture is quite comfortable.

When tuning a car's chassis, designers are always forced to make a compromise, balancing between handling and smoothness. If you make the chassis more comfortable, the handling will deteriorate, but if you improve the handling, the smoothness of the ride will suffer. But Ford's suspension tuners don't get paid for nothing. The new Focus, regardless of body type, combines a smooth ride with excellent handling.

The car pleases with its “on-rail” stability in a straight line - even at high speed and on uneven roads. As the pace increases, the steering wheel becomes heavier, allowing the driver to relax. The predecessor could not boast of such directional stability - at high speed it began to sway and scour over uneven surfaces. And in turns, the station wagon behaves perfectly, willingly pointing its nose where the driver orders. In sharp turns, you can feel the rear suspension steering, “pushing” the car in the right direction. The new Focus drives more enthusiastically than the standard Volkswagen Golf in this class, and is practically not inferior to it in handling reliability.

In terms of driving behavior, the station wagon version is no different from the sedan and hatchback. The slightly stiffer rear suspension settings are practically not felt. At the same time, the station wagon is much more spacious and practical. Europe has long tried this type of body, and in Russia things have moved forward. More and more buyers are choosing station wagons, and the new Ford Focus Wagon is one of the best deals in this segment.

Options and prices

The new Focus station wagon is already on sale in Russian car dealerships. The simplest modification is with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine producing 85 hp. It is offered only with a 5-speed manual transmission and costs 634,000 rubles, which is 25,000 rubles more expensive than a similar version with a sedan body and 35,000 rubles more expensive than a version with a hatchback body. The cheapest option with a 1.6-liter 105-horsepower engine and manual transmission sells for 646,000 rubles. Options with the PowerShift automatic transmission increase the price by 35,000 rubles. A modification with a 125-horsepower version of the same engine costs 670,000 rubles with “mechanics” and 705,000 rubles with PowerShift. The next option is equipped with a 2-liter gasoline unit with a capacity of 150 hp. It is sold at a price of 713,000 rubles with a manual transmission and from 748,000 rubles with an automatic transmission. And the currently most expensive modification in the model line, with a 140-horsepower turbodiesel, will cost the buyer no less than 872,500 rubles. Turbodiesels are expensive these days.

Ford Focus 3 It can hardly be called a simple and unpretentious car; this car is not only beautiful from the outside, but also has a modern exterior and equipment. Despite this, the third generation Focus, unlike the previous version, did not become a bestseller; however, the number of used Ford Focus 3s on the secondary market is huge, therefore, we had no right to ignore this car. Today we’ll talk about the most common shortcomings of the Focus 3, and what you should pay attention to when buying this used car.

A little history:

In 1998, the Escort model was replaced by the first Ford Focus; its debut took place at the Geneva auto show, where the new product created a real sensation. The second generation Focus debuted in September 2004 in Paris. In 2005, car production was established in Russia, at a plant in Vsevolozhsk. became a real bestseller of the brand and was one of the ten best-selling cars in the world. In the CIS, in order to get this car, many had to wait 6 months for their turn.

Ford Focus 3 (Mk 3) was first demonstrated at the beginning of 2010 at the international auto show in Detroit. Despite this, official sales of the new product in the CIS started only in 2012. The car was created on the “ C1"and was offered in three body types - five-door hatchback, sedan and station wagon. Unlike previous versions, the new product is equipped with a large number of electronic systems that were previously unavailable for most Ford models. Four trim levels were available for our market – Ambiente, Trend, Trend Sport and Titanium; there is also a charged “ST” version. The third generation Ford Focus was produced until 2015.

Weaknesses of Ford Focus 3 with mileage

The paintwork on this car is, frankly speaking, weak; scratches appear even from minor contacts with bush branches and brushes at car washes. Despite this, corrosion on the car body is quite rare. When inspecting the car, be sure to pay attention to the condition of the bumpers, since according to statistics, on every second vehicle the standard front bumper mounts are broken off.

Power units

Ford Focus 3 was equipped with gasoline and diesel power units of varying degrees of boost: gasoline 1.6 (85, 105 and 125 hp), 2.0 (150 and 250 hp); diesel 1 .6 (95, 115 hp), 2.0 (115, 140 and 163 hp). Complaints about the reliability of Ford engines are very rare, and the third generation Focus is no exception. The engines of this car are quite reliable, and if any problems arise with them, then, as a rule, they are insignificant. One of the features of gasoline power units is their noisy operation, especially when the engine is not warmed up. For example, when starting a cold 1.6 engine, you can hear a “clunking” or tapping sound from under the hood (a feature of the injectors); after warming up, as a rule, the annoying sounds disappear. The 2.0 engine also has an unpleasant feature - a loud knocking sound when starting a cold engine (a feature of the fuel injection pump).

On cars produced from 2011 to 2012, unstable operation of the engine, “trippling” and loss of traction, was observed, the reason was a failure in the firmware of the power unit control unit; later, the manufacturer eliminated this problem by replacing the software. The engine control unit is located not far from the front bumper, and if even a minor impact occurs on the front of the car, it needs to be replaced (the cost of the unit is about 1,500 USD). If you constantly drive at high speeds, the oil consumption increases, up to 300 grams per 1000 km. The weak point of diesel engines is their sensitive fuel system; if the car is fueled with low-quality fuel, expensive repairs cannot be avoided.

Transmission

The Ford Focus 3 was equipped with a five-speed manual transmission and a PowerShift robotic transmission with two dry clutches. Unfortunately, automatic transmission has both technical and operational shortcomings. So, in particular, owners often complain about jerks, jolts and metallic grinding noises when changing gears, as well as jerking of the car when driving in a traffic jam. If the car was operated most of the time in a metropolis, then expensive repairs to this transmission will be needed after 50-60 thousand km (clutch replacement required).

As for the mechanics, it is quite reliable, but it still has minor drawbacks - leaking axle shaft seals and souring of gear shift cables. To extend the life of gear shift cables, they need to be lubricated every 50,000 km. The clutch lives here for quite a long time - 120-150 thousand km.

Ford Focus 3 suspension reliability

MacPherson struts are traditionally used as the front suspension on the Ford Focus 3, and a multi-link independent suspension is used at the rear. The braking system is represented by disc brakes, the steering is equipped with an electro-hydraulic power steering. Owners of this car model often complain about the suspension creaking in cold weather; dealers do not consider this a breakdown, and call this drawback a “vehicle feature.” If we talk about the reliability of the suspension, then it is quite durable, and in coastal operation, on average, it will last 70-90 thousand km.

For most modern cars, stabilizer struts last no more than 50,000 km. Shock absorbers, as a rule, begin to leak after 70,000 km, and closer to 100,000 km they will need to be replaced, at the same time the support bearings will have to be replaced. Ball joints, wheel bearings and silent blocks, on average, run about 80,000 km. The camber arms of the rear suspension fail at a mileage of 60-70 thousand km. The steering rack is considered the most problematic place in the chassis, and can knock very early (up to 60,000 km). Due to the fact that this unit is not dismountable and can be replaced as an assembly with the amplifier, its replacement is not cheap.

Salon

The interior of the Ford Focus 3 has an original design, but as for this model, the quality of finishing materials and build quality are let down, as a result, crickets appear in the interior in the first year of the car’s life. Despite the large amount of electrical equipment in the cabin, complaints about their operation are extremely rare.

Result:

In general, it’s a fairly reliable and inexpensive car to maintain (if you don’t consider cars with a robotic gearbox), yes, there are certain nuances, but other cars in this price segment also have them.

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you encountered while using the car. Perhaps your review will help the readers of our site when choosing a car.

Test drive for Ford Focus 3

It's hard to be a leader. Especially in such a rapidly developing market as the Russian one. However, he managed. For 12 years, starting back in 1999, I almost always maintained the maximum sales level. Was the standard in its class. They looked up to him, they stood in line behind him. And now it's time for an update. The all-new FORD FOCUS III hits the stage, exciting traditional fans and causing prickly glances from competitors. And believe me, the fight for first place will be serious!

The new FOCUS hasremarkable property - it is beautiful in any color

P Sales of the new generation will begin in September, but the test car came to us back in June. Juicy red, on elegant 16-inch wheels with many spokes, playing with stars of glare from the blinding June sun, the new FOCUS was good. Even in the parking lot, he looked dynamic, like a cast of frozen red energy, ready to burst. I think it's called kinetic design. Another buzzword for press releases, behind which there is actually hard work by aerodynamicists, artists, layout specialists. Making a stationary car already evoke a feeling of movement is a great art. And the new “FOCUS” has a remarkable property - it is beautiful in any color. In red he is expressive and optimistic, in silver he is solid and elegant, black makes him mysterious and a little dangerous. Honestly, I would find it difficult to give preference to one specific color. As they say, choose according to your taste, there are no bad combinations.

The aerodynamic opening grille is now divided into parts by the force lines of the vertical ribs

The two previous generations of FOCUS sold more than half a million copies across Russia - an impressive figure. The newcomer clearly claims to continue the tradition, even outwardly preserving hereditary features (at the same time maintaining corporate decorum, echoing modern MONDEO and FIESTA). We see that the cut and outline of the headlights have remained similar, and the large air intake in the front bumper has also been preserved. However, the optics have become subtly more elegant, and the aerodynamic opening grille is now divided into parts by power lines of vertical ribs. These lines visually continue the relief contours of the stampings on the hood and add strong-willed notes to the appearance of the car. The solid radiator grille was replaced by a chrome-plated horizontal strip, the foglight openings were rounded, and there were more clear edges on the surface of the wings and doors. Following the irreversible trend towards a strong aerodynamic rounding of the body, the new model simultaneously demonstrates more rigid and crystallinebathrooms sculptural forms. The rear optics of the hatchback breathe expression, attacking the wings with sharp angles. And, of course, a crystal scattering of LEDs is right there. The new FOCUS has become brighter, a little more provocative, visually larger and higher class. Compared to its predecessor, FORD FOCUS III added 21 mm in length (4358 mm), but at the same time became 16 mm lower (1484 mm) and decreased in width by the same amount (1823 mm). The wheelbase has grown by an additional 8 mm, which is unlikely to negatively affect the maneuverability of the car. In general, these dry numbers tell us that the dimensions of the car have changed slightly. Another news concerns such a relatively rare FOCUS variant as a three-door hatchback. He won't be there anymore. Why? The answer from FORD marketers is diplomatic: new

The oval ventilation deflectors, which many people were tired of, and the rounded visor of the instrument scale have disappeared from the dashboard.

The five-door hatchback turned out to be so successful that there was no need for a three-door hatchback. The company seems to be hinting to us that even the five-door version has more than enough enthusiasm and dynamics - so why bother further? Although our humble opinion is that in reality the three-door FOCUS simply competes with the similar FOCUS variant. One way or another, a sedan, 5-door hatchback and station wagon are really enough for most buyers. The interior of the previous FOCUS was designed in a rather strict classical style. A poet could characterize the salon of the current contender for leadership in the C class segment as follows: “Since childhood, I have not liked the oval; since childhood, I have drawn a corner.” And indeed, the boring oval ventilation deflectors, the rounded visor of the instrument scale, and the simple proportions of the center console disappeared from the dashboard. Now their place is taken by the broken surfaces of the dashboard, moderate high-tech instrument wells and a space interface in the center, bringing us closer to the lunar transformers that are so relevant in this

The interior of the new FOCUS takes a step towards youth, it is not so obvious, and is definitely more modern

year. In a sense, the interior of the new FOCUS has taken a step towards the youth, it is not as obvious as before and is definitely more modern. The handbrake handle was bent into the now fashionable letter “G”, and the steering wheel now had one more spoke. The updated FOCUS remains comfortable to sit in. The instruments are perfectly legible, all controls are within easy reach. Perhaps the audio system unit looks a little overloaded; you need to get used to the variety of buttons; The climate control unit, on the contrary, is obvious and functional. The sound and cruise control keys on the steering wheel are duplicated in a convex relief. I liked the irregularly shaped but very comfortable ventilation verniers. Even the podochnik follows the chopped space style - commendable attention to detail. Information about the car’s secondary functions is displayed on two color displays with a Russian-language menu and excellent animation. The screens themselves, although not large in size, remain readable in any lighting.

Service

Service period - 15,000 km. The cost with Ford engine oil is from 6590 to 7790 rubles, with Castrol engine oil - from 7090 to 8490 rubles.

The quality of finishing materials has changed for the better - they have become softer and more pleasant to the touch. The front seats received more pronounced lateral support. The comfort of the rear passengers is still at a good level; the increase in the base made it possible to add a little space in the leg area. But the space behind the fifth door has decreased significantly - the luggage compartment volume is 372 liters for the sedan and 277 liters for the hatchback. The full-size spare wheel provided for all Russian versions ate up part of the trunk volume. In addition, when folding the rear seats, a small step is now formed. Perhaps these are the only tangible disadvantages that we noticed in the new hatchback.

FOCUS would not be itself if it could not boast of good dynamic characteristics and a deeply thought-out suspension. The current generation strictly adheres to this glorious tradition and has a lot to offer the driver.

FORD FOCUS III built on a new global platform, the same for cars produced on all continents. The versatile C1 platform is an upgrade of the second-generation platform, with partially isolated rear and front subframes, as well as modified elements of the Control Blade rear multi-link suspension. In practice, this means that the rear suspension has a steering effect and allows you to confidently take even the most intricate turns with minimal steering adjustments. The ESP system is configured to intervene in vehicle control only in emergency situations.

FORD FOCUS III is equipped with a cornering traction control (TVC) system, which analyzes information from sensors

Even within the city limits, we were able to verify the effectiveness of Ford’s “multi-lever” - it was a sin to violate the speed limit, let the car take long and awkward turns without slowing down the gas (fortunately, on Sundays there is minimal traffic). At speeds from 80 to 120, the new FOCUS prescribed the trajectory as if on rails, without the slightest hint of the danger of skidding or unpleasant rolls. I also really liked the steering response - the electric amplifier is configured very competently.

FORD FOCUS III is equipped with a cornering traction control (TVC) system, which analyzes information from sensors at a frequency of 100 times per second. The electronics maintain an optimal balance of torque distribution between the front wheels. This technology improves road grip and allows the driver to operate the gas pedal more freely without fear of slipping (installed only with ESP). The other side of the coin of this advanced system is more correct behavior of the car on slippery surfaces.

We were not too lazy to go into relatively off-road conditions. In the outskirts of some half-abandoned flour mill, they found a fairly mutilated area, full of pebbles, broken asphalt and treacherous hummocks. We drove the car along these waves, almost without touching the brake pedal (but actively working the steering wheel). When the clouds of dust cleared, it turned out that the suspension of the FORD FOCUS III is very capacious, and it is quite difficult to break through it. The car handles adequately on rough roads, and the grip on the surface is exemplary. In addition, I was pleased with the excellent level of noise insulation - probably one of the best in its class. Actually, at idle the engine is not audible at all, and up to 3,000 rpm it only makes itself known with a faint hum. Of course, the pebbles drum on the fender liners noticeably, but for this price category it is quite acceptable. The overall rating for sound insulation is a four with a big plus.

As the base power unit, the European FORD FOCUS III received a completely new 4-cylinder 1.6-liter petrol turbo engine of the EcoBoost family, available in two versions - 150 and 182 hp. With. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed PowerShift dual-clutch automatic transmission, which will replace the traditional automatic. Alas, the new petrol EcoBoost will not be available to Russian buyers. In our market, FOCUS III is equipped with 1.6-liter gasoline engines with a capacity of 105 and 124 hp, as well as a more powerful two-liter power unit with a capacity of 150 hp, borrowed from the American version of FOCUS. Two two-liter diesel engines with a capacity of 140 and 150 hp will also be available. With. There will also be no six-speed manual transmission; 1.6 engines will be limited to five gears. The good news is that the previous ultra-budget 1.4 liter engine has finally been retired. Let's also not forget about the future possibility of the top-end EcoBoost SCTi ST with 2.0 l/250 hp. for the FORD FOCUS ST model (for those temperamental people for whom a car is neither a luxury nor a means of transportation, but a way of life). Unfortunately, we were dealing with an untested engine, which was still quite “fresh”. Its potential has not yet been fully revealed, we can only say that the 1.6 engine is well balanced - it pulls confidently at low speeds and does not force you to change gears frequently. A couple of times I missed the lever and engaged fifth gear instead of third - the car took such mockery quite calmly. Summary: 125 horsepower drives the car confidently, but you shouldn’t expect any sporting feats from them. To do this, it makes sense to pay extra for a 150-horsepower “kopeck piece”.

FORD FOCUS III has become predictably safer than its predecessors. Due to the use of high-strength steel grades, the rigidity of the body has been increased by 25%.

Safety

Overall rating - 5 stars (maximum score) Passenger protection - 92% out of 100 possible, protection of child seats - 82%, pedestrian safety - 72%, passive safety - 71%.

Results of the FORD FOCUS III crash test using the EuroNCAP method

Elements that deform during a collision have been improved, which has a positive impact on active safety

va for torsion. Elements that deform during a collision have been improved, which has a positive impact on active safety. In addition, the new model has acquired many electronic assistants, including a driver monitoring system (“sleep detector”), lane keeping, automatic high beams, road sign recognition, automatic parking, blind spot indicator, distance and speed control and fashionable
now a system for preventing collisions with the car in front at low speeds. All these options are available only in rich trim levels and significantly increase the price of the car.

Thus, the most affordable FORD FOCUS - a 5-door hatchback in the basic configuration with a 1.6-liter engine, 105 hp - will cost buyers 499 thousand rubles (Ambiente). In this case, the client will receive ABS, two front airbags, central locking, electric front windows and mirrors. The additional payment for automatic transmission will be 37 thousand rubles - relatively cheap, by the way.

Due to the use of high-strength steel grades, the torsional rigidity of the body has been increased by 25%.

The maximum package for the 1.6 engine, Titanium, starts from 685,500 rubles, this includes the ESP stability control system, front and side airbags, separate climate control, rain and light sensors, 16-inch alloy wheels, a built-in anti-theft system and sports front seats. The number of additional options seems limitless: bi-xenon and cornering headlights, LED interior lighting, a radio with nine speakers and voice control, an automatic parking system raise the cost of a hatchback with a 1.6 engine and a manual transmission to 799,000 rubles.

The “fast” PowerShift transmission, unavailable only for the base engine (1.6 l, 105 hp), will add another 32,000 rubles to the cost. So, by going to the official website and using the configurator, I created for myself a virtual FOCUS III with a 2.0 engine, an automatic transmission with two clutches and a maximum range of options (except for the smoker’s package, which is of no use to me). The result was impressive - the car pulled

by 913 thousand rubles. Which once again confirms that the list of options for FORD FOCUS, apparently, is the most impressive in its class!

For all this dizziness of electronic wonders and bright design, we must not forget that the new FORD FOCUS has practically not increased in price. When buying a technically more advanced car, you do not pay more in comparison with similar second-generation equipment. This is a big plus for FOCUS III in its difficult fight with its ever-growing rivals from Renault, Hyundai and Chevrolet. Whether the third FOCUS will be the first in this competition is an open question.

When we returned the car to the dealer, we let our FOCUS park itself. As expected, we quietly drove past the free pocket, obediently changed gears and pressed the pedals, obeying the computer’s orders. The steering wheel rotated without our participation. There is something magical about this, at least for people born in the 20th century. It seems to be high technology, but it seems like a trick...

The end of the second decade of the 21st century is just around the corner, the first “spy” photos of the next generation Ford Focus sedan have already appeared on the Internet, experts are speculating about the time and place of the premiere of the updated model, but the good old Focus III, which was released in 2011, still relevant! With a restyled “face” from 2014, of course. In 2014, the once popular car in Russia underwent not just a “facelift”, but a truly serious modernization. Read all the details about the modernization that affected the Focus III sedan in our review!

Design

Considering the fact that the latest Mondeo and the restyled Fiesta debuted earlier, no one was surprised at the changes in the appearance of the new third Focus. The “highlight” of its exterior was the signature radiator grille, generously seasoned with chrome and designed to emphasize the similarity with the more upscale Mondeo. Many people compare this grille with the Aston Martin “grill”, but in fairness it must be said that such similarities are clearly exaggerated.

As a result of the update, the look of the Focus headlights became more predatory, including due to the combination with angular fog optics in the front bumper, which replaced the boring round fog lights. As for the rear lighting equipment, it retained its original shape and acquired a narrow white section, which replaced the large “petal” that adorned the “stern” of the previous model. That's all the significant changes to the Focus's exterior. Looking at the updated third-generation four-door, it’s hard to imagine what else could be improved in it. But judging by the “spy” photos of the next Focus that have already leaked online, there will be improvements, so if anyone has complaints about the quite nice car of the 2014 model, then there is reason to believe that the manufacturer has taken them into account.

Design

The suspension layout remains the same: in front, as before, there are McPherson struts, and in the rear there is a multi-link suspension, which is the key to good handling of the Focus. But during the restyling, new shock absorbers and springs appeared, the steering gear was modified, and the rigidity of the body increased (due to additional reinforcements) and the sound insulation of the interior was improved. According to the manufacturer, as a result of the modernization, the Focus' ground clearance increased to 16 cm, but this statement, unfortunately, is easily refuted by a regular tape measure. Under the arms of the rear suspension there is 14.5 cm, under the mudguard of the engine compartment - 12 cm, and the shields in front of the front wheels are separated from the ground by only 11.5 cm. It is easy to guess that every parking with the nose to the curb will be a test of strength for these shields... It is clear that they are necessary to improve the aerodynamics of the car, but thanks to them, going off the road into “nature” is prohibited for the Focus III. In other words, summer residents can pass by, and if we are talking about a used sedan from overseas, then even more so, since overseas Fords have a stated ground clearance of even less - 14 cm, no more.

Adaptation to Russian conditions

The Focus III is prepared for Russian road realities exactly to the extent that a good city car should be prepared for them. Depending on the configuration, the 1st row seats, steering wheel, windshield and windshield washer nozzles are heated. For an additional fee, you can get a programmable pre-start fuel heater and separate climate control (in the “base” - air conditioning). By default, the sedan is available with the proprietary Ford Easy Fuel refueling system without using a filler cap and the “Ford - Roadside Assistance” program for a period of 1 year (or up to the 1st maintenance).

Comfort

Inside the restyled car is noticeably more comfortable than in the cabin of its predecessor. In place of the rounded 4-spoke steering wheel with plump contours, there is now a 3-spoke wheel with a more strict and modern design. It is adjustable for both inclination and reach. The climate control unit has acquired a fashionable pictogram with the image of a man (similar pictograms are seen in Volvo and Hyundai), and the center console is now crowned with the proprietary Sync multimedia complex with expanded functionality. The ergonomics of the cabin have remained at the same level: the seats are still moderately hard, the headroom and legroom are still moderately spacious, without excess headroom. At one time, only the lazy would criticize the Focus for being cramped, and after the update this problem was never resolved.

You really can’t get around much in the sedan’s cabin, but you can’t say that it’s very, very cramped here, unless, of course, the height of the driver and passengers reaches 2 m, and the weight does not exceed 100 kg. Another minus is the manual gear shift, located on the keys “registered” on the right side of the gearbox selector. There are no more complaints about ergonomics. According to the manufacturer, the four-door trunk holds at least 421 liters. luggage - by class standards this is not too much, but at the same time not so little. In any case, this is more than enough for everyday city driving. The trunk door opening is small, so long cargo will have to be placed at a slight angle. An ordinary spare tire is stored underground in the cargo compartment, and a full-size spare tire is offered only for an additional fee.

To correctly assess the safety level of the Focus III sedan, you should focus on the results of crash tests of the 2012 hatchback of the same name. The results of crash tests conducted by the authoritative European organization Euro NCAP are as follows: driver or adult passenger protection - 92%, child protection - 82%, pedestrian protection - 72%, electronic assistants - 71%. Overall result: 5 points out of 5 possible. High scores allowed the third Focus to win the title of one of the safest representatives of the class of small family cars. And this despite the fact that there are only 2 airbags as standard. You will have to pay extra for side airbags, curtains, a tire pressure sensor, a rear view camera and other delights. The list of electronic assistants has expanded after restyling and can now include a wide variety of safety devices:

The top version of the third Focus is equipped with a new Sync media system with an eight-inch color touchscreen, Bluetooth, AUX/USB connectors for connecting gadgets and control buttons on the steering wheel. The new multimedia complex is compatible with both Androids and Apples, and almost always understands voice commands the first time. Using your voice, you can adjust the air temperature in the cabin, indicate your destination to the navigator (restaurant, cinema, etc.) and make calls in hands-free mode. For graphics, sound and performance, the system deserves a solid “four”, but if the “four” for sound is not satisfactory, then no one bothers you to get premium-level acoustics for an additional fee.

Ford Focus 3 Specifications

The Russian engine range of the Focus III sedan consists exclusively of gasoline units of the Euro-5 environmental class. Junior Ti-VCT engine with a volume of 1.6 liters. produces 105 hp and 150 Nm of torque, while the average engine of the same volume already develops 125 hp. and 159 Nm. Both are combined with a five-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed PowerShift robotic transmission. As for the top-end one and a half liter EcoBoost unit, its power reaches 150 hp and peak torque is as much as 240 Nm. The EcoBoost engine works well with 92-octane gasoline, is paired only with a six-speed “robot” and provides the best possible dynamics. With it, the car accelerates to 100 km/h in just 9.3 seconds. and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h. The passport average fuel consumption of the Focus III is 6-6.7 liters. per 100 km, depending on the modification, but the real “appetite” may be higher.

The Ford Focus has been one of the best-selling foreign cars on the Russian market for many years. Over its 16-year history, more than 750 thousand Focus cars of three generations have been sold in our country. But despite the popularity of the model, potential Focus 3 buyers are interested in knowing what kind of car it is, how it drives and behaves on the road? Let's try to figure it out...

Appearance plays a primary role for many when choosing a car, and the Ford Focus does everything right with this: it is beautiful, elegant, sporty and smart, both in a sedan and a hatchback. But there are no comrades in taste and color, so you don’t need to focus on the appearance, but go straight to the interior of the car.

The interior of the “third Focus” is not without grace, and the obvious redundancy of all sorts of buttons and levers per unit area does not cause rejection. And the quality of plastics and assembly is excellent.

The only thing I can complain about is the blue-violet displays and button backlighting. Even though its brightness was muted, this “bluishness” is still not entirely pleasing to the eye. The good news is that the instrument scales have white backlighting, which is softer and better perceived.

During operation, you may get the impression that a good part of the buttons and the inscriptions on them are made too small. And indeed, it is so, and with its diversity and dense layout, the center console resembles an airplane cockpit. When you first get into the “third Focus”, you get a little confused, missing the search for the desired function. However, you get used to everything quickly, and it’s worth noting that the main controls on the car do not suffer from dwarfism.

The Ford Focus is available with a Sony audio system with a 5-inch LCD display, six speakers, USB and AUX connectors, Bluetooth support, voice control, and the ability to control it from a multi-steering wheel. In addition, there is a 4.2-inch color display on the dashboard, which displays readings from the on-board computer. The music sounds decent and of high quality, its control is quite clear and simple. But reading navigation readings is not very convenient, but all because the screen is too small.

The front seats in the Ford Focus, regardless of body type, are suitable for people of almost any size - they are simply comfortable.
But it’s more comfortable to sit in the back seat in a hatchback, since the sedan has a more sloping roof, which takes up some space above your head.

The engine range of the sedan and hatchback is slightly different: the base of the five-door is a 1.6-liter unit producing 85 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque, which is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Here we can only say one thing: if you can still drive around the city in such a car more or less confidently, then it’s better not to go on the highway, since it accelerates sluggishly and uncertainly, and the lack of power will be especially acute on busy highways.

With a 1.6-liter 105-horsepower engine, you can combine both “mechanics” and a 6-speed “Robot” PowerShift with two clutches. But even this Ford Focus has mediocre dynamics. If it is still enough for a quiet ride in the city cycle, then the highway and overtaking are not quite its element. In general, it is useless to turn the engine: at high speeds there will be much more noise than the speakers. And again, it is better to combine the 105-horsepower unit with a manual gearbox, since the robotic transmission does not allow its full (already small) potential to be revealed. Its purpose is to calmly take you from point A to point B, and it will probably suit only a frankly phlegmatic driver.

Another 1.6-liter engine produces 125 horsepower and 159 Nm of torque. In civilian modes, it is quite quiet and economical, but if you twist it well, it shows good activity. But again, he is able to fully reveal his talents with a five-gear manual transmission. With the PowerShift robotic gearbox, the Ford Focus 3 will satisfy only a calm person without driving ambitions. Responses to the accelerator are dampened, and the “sport mode” does not seriously change the picture.

A two-liter engine with an output of 150 “horses” and 202 Nm of peak torque is the best option for lovers of dynamic driving. And to fully realize the potential of a superbly tuned chassis (more on this a little later) allows, again, a manual gearbox, moreover, the appetite is moderate and the noise level is low.
The tandem of a 150-horsepower unit with a manual transmission turns the Focus into a driver's car, allowing it to quickly take off from a standstill, as well as confidently accelerate from medium speeds, making overtaking on the highway a pleasure. Yes, and you’ll definitely be able to race from traffic light to traffic light without falling flat on your face in a two-liter car.
But in this case there are some questions regarding the “robot”. In the city cycle, PowerShift does its job perfectly, even in traffic jams it changes gears clearly and smoothly. The problem with the robotic box is something else – acceleration from medium speeds. For example, moving at a constant speed of 70 km/h, the box engages sixth gear for the sake of efficiency, and if you need to accelerate (say, to overtake), then fourth gear is engaged, but the traction turns out to be completely insufficient - the two-liter unit reaches its peak characteristics at high "rpm". In addition, it is inherent in the “robot” to think a little before sticking into the desired gear. When overtaking, this behavior certainly does not add positive emotions. In general, during any active actions, PowerShift is reluctant to downgrade. Again, with this engine, “sport mode” doesn’t help much. There is even some impression that the company did not at all adapt the transmission control program to the 150-horsepower naturally aspirated engine.

Well, in terms of behavior on the road, the “third” Ford Focus is an enthusiastic, responsive car, which becomes much more interesting to drive when there are many turns along the way. Excellent feedback is provided thanks to the steering system, which, as speed increases, fills the steering wheel with weight commensurate with the increase in speed. The car bites into the asphalt to the last, so in order to get it into drift or drift, you need to try hard.
The suspension of the Ford Focus is comfortable: there is a slight bounce on the waves, hard bumps are overcome elastically, and small holes and potholes are absorbed by 16-inch tires measuring 215/55. A car with a 150-horsepower engine is equipped with 17-inch wheels (215/50), although the smoothness of the ride suffers a little from this, but the Focus does not turn into a stool. In general, a certain stiffness of the car’s suspension is justified, and its energy intensity is high.

The hatchback is a little lighter than the sedan, which affects its behavior. It is more exciting, and due to its dynamic appearance it is perceived as a more sporty car. In the Ford Focus III hatchback, you just want to hit the gas, take a turn as quickly as possible, or just do a high-speed race from traffic light to traffic light. But do not forget what engine and type of gearbox are installed on the car. In a sedan, you want to drive calmly and measuredly.

In all trim levels, the “third” Ford Focus is equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with emergency braking assistance. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is available for all versions except the basic one, but in some cases it is an option, and in others it is standard. It constantly monitors the machine's movement parameters and, if necessary, makes effective adjustments. It is worth noting that you cannot completely disable it, but you can use the “limited assistance” mode.
It would not be amiss to mention the innovative automatic braking technology called Active City Stop, installed on expensive versions of the Focus, which helps avoid collisions with other cars when driving at speeds of up to 30 km/h. When the system detects a risk of collision, it automatically applies the brakes (see crash test page for details). It also deserves attention because it received the EuroNCAP Advanced Reward for safety.
