First generation Nissan Teana. Other problems and malfunctions

11.05.2017

Nissan Teana J32) is the second generation of a medium business class car, which is produced from 2008 to 2014. Thanks to its expressive appearance, rich equipment, good driving performance and reasonable price, this model is one of the best-selling in this segment, competing with models such as. And, here's how things are with the reliability of the car, and what you should pay attention to when choosing a Nissan Teana 2 with mileage in the secondary market, you will learn by reading this article.

A bit of history:

Nissan Teana (J31) was introduced in 2002 in the Japanese domestic market and is the successor to the Maxim model (J30). The car is built on the Nissan FF-L platform, designed specifically for the concern's front-wheel drive vehicles. Serial assembly of new items began in 2004 in Korea, where Teana is sold under the name "Samsung SM5". In 2005, assembly began in Thailand. In 2006, an updated version of the car was introduced. Until 2006, cars were officially sold only in the markets of Asia and Europe; in Ukraine, Russia and other CIS countries, official deliveries began in 2006.

In 2008, the Nissan Teana 2 (J32) debuted in Beijing, based on the Nissan Intima concept and built on the Nissan D platform. A year later, the first Russian-assembled car appeared on the market. In 2011, the first restyled version of the second generation of the model rolled off the assembly line. Externally, the car has not changed much, the main changes have occurred in the technical part. The release of Nissan Teana 2 lasted until 2014. In the same year, the debut of the third generation of the model took place at the auto show in Japan, the production of which continues to this day.

Weaknesses and shortcomings of Nissan Teana 2 with mileage

The paintwork of the body is quite delicate, as a result, chips and scratches appear even from a slight impact on the paint. Most often, the hood is prone to chipping, because of this, on most specimens, it is not in its native paint. As for the quality of the body metal, it suffers considerably in our operating conditions, especially in the places of chips. The most susceptible to corrosion: the hood, trunk lid, upper and lower edges of the doors, sills and wheel arches.

On pre-styling versions, the seams and floor of the trunk, the bottom of the car and suspension elements (covered with rust) require special attention. Not famous for durability and chrome-plated body elements (cloudy and corroded). Also, on a car older than 6 years, the front optics begin to become cloudy (to prolong the life of the optics, it is enough to stick a protective film on it). The weak points include the windshield (quickly covered with chips and scratches, cracking with a sharp temperature drop) and door handles (when the door freezes, it will not be difficult to break the handle).

Power units

This second generation Nissan Teana was equipped only with gasoline engines - an in-line “four” 2.5 (167 hp) and V-shaped “sixes” with a volume of 2.5 (182 hp) and 3.5 (249 hp). ). All power units are quite reliable, but V6 engines deserve the most attention, as they are considered the most successful in the last decade. The declared resource of V6 engines is 300-350 thousand km, but, as operating experience has shown, with proper maintenance and proper operation, the motor, without major repairs, can last up to 500,000 km. The main problems that owners face are often associated not with the power unit itself, but with its attachments. So, for example, in winter there are problems with a cold start of the engine due to the fragility of the catalysts. It is not worth delaying the replacement of catalysts, since when it is destroyed, ceramic particles enter the cylinder and significantly reduce the piston resource.

One of the most problematic places is the oil pump, its resource rarely exceeds 100-120 thousand km, if the oil is not changed in time, the problem can also appear at 60,000 km. To extend the life of the pump, it is necessary to change the oil at least once every 10-15 thousand km (especially if the car is operated in urban mode). The official service recommends installing expensive iridium candles on the motor, but this makes no sense, since they do not last much longer than ordinary ones. Owners of cars with a 3.5 engine often have to change engine mounts (every 40-50 thousand km), while owners of cars with a 2.5 engine carry out this procedure every 150-200 thousand km. These motors are equipped with a timing chain drive, as a rule, this unit does not require intervention up to 170-200 thousand km (the chain and tensioners need to be replaced).

The weakest power unit 2.5 is less hardy than more powerful units (the resource to the capital is 250-300 thousand km). The common disadvantages of this motor include a small resource of timing chains, a phase shifter and an oil pump, they fail at a range of 120-150 thousand km. The piston group at high mileage is prone to coking, as a result, the engine begins to eat up oil.

Of the common features of all engines, oil leaks through the cylinder head gasket can be noted; after 120-150 thousand km, oil consumption increases (replacement of piston rings is required). Also, one should take into account the fact that the engines are not equipped with hydraulic compensators and require valve adjustment at least once every 70-90 thousand kilometers. If at idle the engine began to triple, and acceleration occurs with jerks, flushing of the nozzles and throttle valve is required. If this does not fix the problem, you will have to reflash the engine control unit. All power units are afraid of overheating, in order to avoid big troubles, many experts recommend changing the thermostat every 50-60 thousand km (fails on a run of up to 80,000 km) and flushing the radiator 1-2 times a year. On pre-styling specimens, engine sensors, lambda sensors and temperature sensors require special attention, and wiring damage is also encountered. Radiator fans are considered one of the problem areas: both their bearings and electric drives fail, so be sure to check their performance when buying.

Transmission

Nissan Teana 2 was equipped only with CVT automatic transmissions - stepless variator Jatco JF011E, Jatco JF016E and JF010E. It is not worth counting on a long line of transmission service, since its resource, on average, is 150-170 thousand km, even regular replacement of branded lubricant does not help. Repair only briefly extends the life of the transmission, therefore, many experts recommend changing the box immediately. Most often, owners of post-styling copies face a variator malfunction. The fact is that the manufacturer made structural changes to the box cooling system, removing one of the three radiators, as a result, the unit overheats under prolonged load. In cars on which the box was overheated, at high engine speeds, the transmission howls and twitches during acceleration.

The oil in the box should be changed at least once every 30,000 km, otherwise premature wear of the oil pump and valve body plungers is inevitable. Often, for a run of 100,000 km, on cars whose owners like to "light up", you have to change the belt. In all-wheel drive versions, the clutch of the rear wheel drive clutch is added to the number of nodes with a limited resource, which can be burned with frequent arrivals on ice or “races” in the summer. For clutch replacement, you will have to pay 600-800 USD.

Problem areas and shortcomings of the chassis Nissan Teana 2

Suspension Nissan Teana 2 is independent, without any complex design solutions: front - MacPherson, rear - multi-link. If we talk about its reliability, then, despite its simplicity, a couple of weak points are still present in it. Most often, stabilizer struts and bushings bother, replacement every 20-30 thousand km. Once every 40-60 thousand km, tie rod ends remind of themselves. On a run of 80-100 thousand km, more serious costs will be required, since by this time the ball bearings, steering rods, silent blocks of the front levers, and rear suspension levers are out of order. Shock absorbers, thrust and wheel bearings can last up to 150,000 km.

When operating a car, it is necessary to monitor the wheel alignment, because in Teana it regularly goes astray (check every 10-15 thousand km). In the steering mechanism, the power steering mechanism most often bothers. The problem is that the high-pressure hose is close to the exhaust manifold, due to overheating it starts to crack and leak (replacing the hose on average costs $200-250). There are also complaints about the steering rack, problems with the rack can begin at a range of 70-80 thousand km (smudges and knocking appear when driving on rough roads). The braking system is generally reliable, except that on machines with all-wheel drive you can find increased wear on the front brake hoses.

Salon

The quality of the finishing materials for the Nissan Teana 2 interior does not quite correspond to the class of the car. A torn driver's seat is more the rule than the exception, and even the threads of the seams literally spread with high mileage. Closer to 100,000 km, scuffs appear on the steering wheel. It is also frustrating that the steering wheel does not have reach adjustments and the monochrome display of the audio system in basic configurations, the same one was installed on Opel 10 years ago. And, here, the sound quality of acoustics and noise isolation pleasantly surprised, but, nevertheless, it still does not reach the premium level of European models. There are also problems with the electrics, most often the owners complain about the failure of the power window control unit, malfunctions of the multimedia system, and errors in the operation of the climate system often occur. In most cases, flashing blocks is required to fix problems. When inspecting a car with a mileage of 150,000 km or more, listen to how the motor works, if there are extraneous noises, then it will have to be changed soon.

Outcome:

In addition to comfort, good driving performance and presentable appearance, the Nissan Teana 2 boasts acceptable reliability. If we compare this car with European competitors, then in many ways it loses to such brands as Mercedes and BMW, but this is more than paid off by the low cost of maintenance and repair.

If you are the owner of such a car, please share your impressions, perhaps it is your review that will become the key when choosing a reliable car for our readers.

The first generation Nissan Teana debuted in 2003. In 2006, the model went through restyling. The sedan received updated headlights and taillights, a chrome bumper trim and larger foglights. In 2008, there was a generational change.

Inside, the driver and front passenger are quite comfortable. But in the back, people of average height will feel comfortable. It's a bit cramped here for tall people. The trunk, although large, is not the most spacious - only 476 liters.

Engines

Teana was completed exclusively with gasoline aspirated: two 4-cylinder and two 6-cylinder.

2.0 l / 136 hp R4 (QR20DE)

2.3 l / 173 hp V6 (VQ23DE)

2.5 l / 170 hp R4 (QR25DE)

3.5 l / 245 hp V6 (VQ35DE)

All engines are quite reliable. They are equipped with a chain-type timing drive that can last more than 300,000 km. The motors themselves, before the first overhaul, as a rule, run more than 500,000 km. But first, you will have to change the ignition coils and the valve cover gasket. The first time, after about 150,000 km.

With a run of more than 200-250 thousand km, oil consumption may increase significantly. Most often it's all about the PCV valve (crankcase ventilation valve). In this case, oil can be found in the intake manifold. Less often, the occurrence of rings is possible, which occurs when using low-quality oil and tightening with its replacement.

If knocking and vibrations appear after 100-150 thousand km, one of the engine mounts will have to be replaced. There are four of them: two hydraulic ones - from 4,000 rubles, and two ordinary ones - from 2,000 rubles.

Unpleasant rattling and vibrations can also be caused by worn damper valves. For two round dampers, you will have to pay about 5,000 rubles.

Transmission

A 4-speed hydromechanical automatic was installed with all engines, with the exception of the top one. For the 3.5-liter unit, a continuously variable variator and 6-speed mechanics were in store. The last combination is very exotic.

All automatic transmissions are developed by the Japanese company Jatco. They need regular oil changes - once every 60,000 km. Otherwise, the oil ages, the pressure in the circuit drops, and the wear of the box elements increases.

The first troubles with automatic transmission may arise after 200-250 thousand km. In addition to the classic symptoms (jolts and slippage), another one also appears - the reverse gear disappears. It is worth noting that small kicks when switching from first to second are a proprietary feature of the Teanov machine.

The variator for most owners turned out to be less tenacious. First of all, because of the sporty driving style and the neglect of timely updating of the transmission fluid. Problems often appeared after 100-150 thousand km. There were shocks, howling, whistling, thrust disappeared. For more caring and calm drivers, the variator is able to cover 250-350 thousand km. The cost of repairs will be 40-60 thousand rubles, and in advanced cases it reaches 100,000 rubles.

Chassis

Teana's suspension copes well with small bumps, but it works out real potholes too loudly. The sedan is quite docile in turns, and body roll is small.

Some owners from the first kilometers complained about a knock on the chassis. Many mechanics believe that it's all about shock absorbers. Fortunately, silent blocks and ball joints do not require attention up to 150-200 thousand km.

The steering rack can knock after 100,000 km, and a little later it can leak. At the same time, the power steering pump may need to be replaced.

Over time, owners notice ABS malfunctions, accompanied by an error. Often it is possible to solve the problem by cleaning the magnetic tape, less often you have to change the sensor. The main thing to remember is that you can’t ride with an error for a long time. This will inevitably lead to failure of the ABS unit. The cost of a new block is 120,000 rubles, a “beu” can be found for 10,000 rubles. However, the native unit will be able to restore in a specialized service.

Other problems and malfunctions

The body is not prone to corrosion, but age takes its toll. When examining the oldest cars, you can notice the “bubble” coating on the trunk lid, wheel arches and chrome elements.

After 150-200 thousand km, sometimes the arrow of the fuel indicator begins to "fake". Sometimes the sensor itself is to blame, but more often it's all about the control unit for measuring instruments and climate control. It is he who is responsible for processing the signal from the sensor. The disease is eliminated by soldering the contacts.

The air conditioning compressor may fail after 150-200 thousand km. For a new one, you will have to pay about 30,000 rubles.

Quite often there are problems with door locks, especially with the driver's. The lock stops opening from the outside. The reason is the wear of the activator, motor or gears. The operability of the lock can be restored by replacing faulty elements.

Over time, the back of the driver's seat begins to play. Fortunately, the disease is treated quite simply.

Market situation

Today Nissan Teana J31 of the first years of production can be taken for 300,000 rubles. The freshest copies are available for 500-600 thousand rubles. Among the proposals dominated by cars with a 2.3-liter engine.

Conclusion

Nissan Teana is a fairly reliable car, albeit with some reservations. Most of the faults are due to a decent age, high mileage and negligence of the owners. Therefore, a thorough examination and diagnosis, especially the variator, are required.

Almost all cars have only front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive right-hand drive cars are rare, although technically they are nothing special. The knots are the same as on Murano and X-Trail, familiar and widespread. The clutch and its electronics are somewhat weak, but nothing more. For a passenger car that is not selected for serious off-road, nothing criminal.

In the transmission, in principle, there are no weak links, except for the actual gearboxes. The CV joints are strong and even the anthers do not tear for a long time. The hub assemblies are not the strongest, but they will have to be changed more likely due to the ABS sensors, which I mentioned.

From the factory, the car was equipped only with automatic transmission, but this does not mean that you will not find cars with “mechanics”. I myself saw Teana on a “handle” with a 3.5 engine, and there is reason to believe that such a transmission “swap” is not an isolated case. Still, don't count too much on this option. Almost all Teanas are either with a four-speed “automatic” Jatco developed by Nissan itself, or with a variator, which at the beginning of the 2000s was considered the latest “fashion”.

Actually, it is the RE0F09A variator (aka JF010E according to Jatco classification) on machines with 3.5 that is Teana's main failure. On the one hand, the use of a continuously variable gearbox made it possible to maintain and even significantly reduce the fuel consumption of the top-end engine - on the highway and in the city it is a good 15-25% more economical than the widely used junior 2.3.

And yet, the variator, although it seemed to be designed for high torque, does not “live” with a 3.5 engine. Despite all the efforts of designers to limit the load on the belt, it is still constantly at risk, and the working surfaces of the cones wear out very quickly.

Let's be honest: the owner of a car with a 3.5 engine is unlikely to deny himself the pleasure of sometimes "pressing down a slipper." Yes, even frosts ... But the variator does not like either sudden loads or cold driving. If we add here the irregular oil change in the box and the wear of the torque converter lining, it turns out that the resource of most automatic transmissions of this type with a 3.5 engine turned out to be very low.

Pictured: Nissan Teana (J31) "2006–08

Few problems? Add a relatively small number of cars with a CVT and a low level of literacy of craftsmen. There was simply no one to repair the broken unit, and the owners of the powerful Teans drank grief with a full spoon.

But structurally, the box differs little from the extremely popular RE0F10A and RE0F06A transmissions. They can be found on many models of Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Chrysler and many others, where they have proven themselves well.

If you still bought a car with a CVT, and he is still alive, then change the oil as often as possible, once every 30 thousand, for example. Install an external filter on the box cooling system, monitor the thermostat. And try not to use the full power of the motor, do not skid under any circumstances and do not use engine braking modes.

Too many restrictions? Alas, otherwise the life of the variator cannot be saved. If you neglect the recommendations, then in addition to the general wear of the valve body of the box, there is a risk of failure of the pump pressure valve. Next, the box is waiting for shock loads, a quick break in the belt and damage to the cones, and at the same time the wear of the Forward clutch package.

With careful operation, the belt life will be about 150 thousand kilometers. Cases of running more than 200 thousand are rare, and the masters advise changing the belt proactively until it has worn out the cones. Friction notches on the belt wear out over time, it removes oil from the contact zone worse and begins to slide with less and less load, wearing out the surfaces of the cones and damaging them. And with long runs, the wear of the main steel belts affects - they weaken and thereby significantly worsen working conditions at large gear ratios of the box.

When buying, you should definitely check the operation of the box under load. With intensive acceleration, there should be no twitching, and even more so, noise from the transmission side; when driving at speeds of 90-130 km / h “on a cruise”, the tachometer needle should stand still without small fluctuations. When the load changes, for example, driving uphill, the speed should change very smoothly, almost imperceptibly. The inclusion of Drive and Reverse should be, again, soft.

Any problems with the variator - most likely, to high costs, because there are few contract units, and their wear is quite large. Repair parts are quite expensive. A belt - at least 30 thousand rubles, a restored oil pump - about 20 thousand. A set of shafts - already for 150 thousand rubles.

Cars with engines of 2.0 and 2.3 liters were equipped with a much more familiar automatic transmission, a four-speed hydromechanical RE4F04A. This box appeared on the Maxima and proved to be quite good. With normal maintenance, the mileage before the first repair is usually about 200 thousand kilometers. This was followed by repairs with the replacement of some solenoids and ... another 200 thousand before problems with the oil pump and serious wear of the clutch packs appeared. Against the background of the variator - a real salvation.

Radiator

original price

18 584 rubles

A typical disease is the loss of reverse gear. The Reverse planetary gear set is rather weak here - it cuts off the splines. However, this kind of breakdown is more typical for SUVs and crossovers with the same automatic transmission. The wear of the brake band affects primarily the smoothness of gear shifting 1-2 and the wear of the High and Forward Clutch packages. I already wrote about the features of controlling the pressure solenoid in the “electrician” section - changing the parameters of the “lowering” resistor also leads to hard operation of the automatic transmission. Other diseases of the automatic transmission - only with a combination of very poor maintenance and severe loads. Of the four-speed boxes, this is considered one of the most successful.

In practice, almost all drivers are forced to endure harsh switching 1-2, and in advanced cases 3-4, and even with a blow when turning on Drive / Reverse. Frequent oil changes and a good external radiator can increase the life a little. The reality is that this box, like all reliable units, is often tritely killed by a complete lack of maintenance and delaying the necessary repairs. I will repeat once again the old truth: “reliable” does not mean “indestructible”. There is nothing indestructible in modern cars.

Motors

The Nissan Teana J 31 was generally lucky with the engines. Nissan V 6 VQ series are famous for their good resource and good design. And the in-line "four" QR also proved to be a little worse. As for the general difficulties, first of all, pay attention to the cooling system. The quality of radiators is very mediocre, sometimes Chinese counterparts can withstand our salt and slush better. Even on cars aged 6-8 years, the owners noted the complete disappearance of the cooling fins in the lower part - they were corny eaten by corrosion. And by the age of ten, leaks often occur due to poor contact between plastic parts and metal, and the core of the radiator corrodes and flows.

Some difficulties with the engine compartment electrics are possible, but in general, everything is assembled well here. It is only necessary to monitor cleanliness and avoid large accumulations of dirt and oil emissions. Relatively weak catalytic converters need to be changed at the first sign of wear or after significant oil consumption for any reason - the exhaust here is quite thin and tuned. When ceramic chips appear, it goes into the cylinders almost immediately, leading to instant wear of the rings and piston scuffing.

Timing chain VQ23DE

original price

5 188 rubles

The simplest motor that can sometimes be found under the hood of the Teana is the in-line "four" QR 20DE. It is rare on Teana, but it is a very common motor for X-Trail and Primera. Not the best and most successful Nissan engine, but quite decent. The timing chain resource is about 100-150 thousand kilometers, it is quite stable and depends on the load on the engine. A timing revision is recommended for runs of about a hundred thousand, along with valve adjustment and checking the operation of the phase shifter.

The first series of engines were remembered by the early shedding of the catalyst already mentioned above and the subsequent scuffing of the piston group. And the motor is also characterized by a poor start in cold weather - at temperatures below -20 degrees, it stubbornly fills candles for any reason.

There are enough minor problems with unstable operation, vibrations and leaks. The resource of the piston group is about 200-250 thousand, after which you should expect an indispensable oil burner. But the sleeves change, and the pistons are relatively inexpensive. There were no catastrophic tricks with the loss of oil pressure behind it. It is not recommended to buy, because V 6 engines with much better performance and a longer resource were also installed on Teana. And in terms of fuel consumption, a two-liter engine is inferior even to an unsuccessful bunch of “3.5 + CVT”.

Most often, Teana can be found with a 2.3-liter VQ23DE engine. Despite the modest volume, there are 6 cylinders here. The more voluminous 3.5 VQ35DE differs minimally from it, but is less common.

These engines are considered one of the best engines in their class. A resource with proper maintenance is already over 400 thousand kilometers - real "millionaires of our time." There are quite reliable chains in the timing drive. There are three of them: one main and two chains connecting the camshafts in each of the cylinder heads. The main chain usually has a resource of more than 200 thousand.

Phase shifter

original price

12 529 rubles

Excellent traction, power, resource and also the ability to boost. And at the same time, they are very conveniently arranged, have a small mass and are compact. Of course, it is not without difficulties. So, a bad start in winter is as common as on in-line "fours". And on engines until 2008, the catalysts died quite early. If the problem was not fixed under warranty or they were not removed at all, then problems with increased wear of the piston group are also possible.

The oil consumption of the engines is slightly higher than average - the not very advanced crankcase ventilation system, the high average mileage, and the design of the piston group also affect. But if the motor consumes within a couple of liters from replacement to replacement, then you should not worry. This is quite typical and consumption will not progress rapidly anytime soon. The engine usually forgives even small overheatings without air pockets, the main thing is not to miss the oil level and change it every 10, maximum 15 thousand kilometers, at least. Dirty oil quickly kills the oil pump and dramatically increases the gaps in the timing mechanism - they also require adjustment here, at least once every 60-80 thousand kilometers. And the appearance of steam locks with serious overheating can lead to warping of the cylinder head or valve cover.

Candles are recommended to be changed more often - you can put not platinum, relying "by rank", but ordinary ones, but with a replacement at least once every 40 thousand. In this case, the ignition modules will live longer, and the course will be smoother, and the return will be higher. To replace the rear row spark plugs, you need to remove the intake manifold, but the procedure looks scarier than it actually is.

Also, to maintain comfort in the car, it is recommended to change the engine mounts every three to four years - the motor is sufficiently vibration-loaded, so the wear of its suspension elements is significant.

Vibrations are also associated with the Teana-specific problem with wiping the fuel hose. Check the engine compartment for the gasket of this important element - fires happen, and most often in the left side due to gasoline getting into the exhaust under load.

Oil leaks on these engines occur regularly: camshaft position sensors on the cylinder head, candle wells and valve covers flow. This trouble is treated by cleaning and replacing the ventilation system, but be careful, this is the first sign of serious wear on the piston group of the motor. If the upper catalysts are in place, then they are likely to crumble, and the wear of the piston group is already serious.

Pictured: Nissan Teana (J31) "2003–05

In general, the “perpetual” motor also has difficulties, so cars with a “junior” V 6 should also not be taken without looking. However, the choice of contract units is very wide, in case of serious trouble with an old engine, it is easier to buy a used one in good condition - the probability of finding a good copy is very high.

So take it or not?

Business class at this age is usually not cheap to operate. But Teana is happy in this sense: if you buy a car with a 2.3 engine, then the risks are minimal. Yes, a four-speed automatic transmission is an obvious anachronism; by 2008, seven-speed automatic transmissions were already installed on European cars ... But everything works reliably - both the engine and the gearbox.

Pictured: Nissan Teana (J31) "2006–08

The most painful place - the body - can still be maintained in good condition, just at a slightly higher cost than the "best examples". Do not think that European models are even a little more recent, they have even more problems in this regard. Cars with rings on the radiator grill and with a star rot, and sometimes much faster and more unpleasant.

Serious disadvantages include the poor quality of the interior, a mediocre multimedia system and “cotton” handling. Yes, and the suspension requires regular maintenance.

But if you calculate, then all the minuses overlap with a large margin. Especially if you are not a connoisseur of fine handling, do not require a powerful car to consume fuel like a small car, and are not used to European ergonomics of premium brands. The eternal trouble of the model is that the main competitor of Teana is very strong. Toyota Camry is indeed better in almost all respects, it plays in the same class, and its list of advantages is very similar. True, the price of Toyota will be almost one and a half times higher; people's love “warms up” it. There is something to think about, isn't it?

Would you buy yourself a "first" Teana with mileage?

The first generation Nissan Tiana (J31) was presented in February 2003 and was originally intended for the markets of Japan, China and Southeast Asia. Among buyers of the model in North America, the Nissan Teana J31 is known as the Nissan Altima. The car is built on the global platform FF-L.

Business sedan Nissan Tiana J31 at the beginning of 2006 survived a light plastic surgery and expanded the geography of sales in Europe at the expense of Russia and Ukraine. Our review is dedicated to the restyled Nissan Teana of the first generation, which has been officially sold on the Russian market since 2006. In 2008, it was replaced by the second generation Teana with factory index J32.

The appearance of this business-class sedan is not capable of evoking any admiring emotions, it can even be called restrained or boring. But restraint in this case has a shade of presentability. The front part of the first generation Teana - with original headlights, located in the extreme side positions of the sloping hood. The front bumper with classic lines, the slot of the lower air intake harmoniously continues with narrow rectangular foglights. Nissan's signature inverted trapezoid grille is lavishly clad in chrome. Chrome lining encircles the body of the Nissan Teana J31 along the perimeter (oriental perception of luxury), front and rear bumpers, door panels.
The profile of the car looks heavy, but thoroughly. Large wheel arches that accommodate wheels in size 205/65 R16 - 215/55 R17, large doorways and side windows add solidity. The sloping aft roof with a powerful rear end gives passengers a sense of security.

Behind the first generation Nissan Tiana demonstrates monumentality: "adult" bumper, trunk lid, rear lighting, and of course an abundance of chrome elements. The dimensions of the Nissan Teana J31 are: length - 4845 mm, width - 1765 mm, height - 1475 mm, base - 2775 mm, ground clearance - 135 mm.
As a result, we must admit that the designers turned out to have a solid Tiana model - this is a car designed for people who appreciate the classics that do not go out of fashion.

We see a completely different picture inside. The stylish, bright and functional inner world of the first generation Tiana welcomes its five passengers with a worthy quality of the materials used, well-adjusted interior ergonomics and excellent assembly. The front dashboard is rich with wide “wooden” inserts, a large steering wheel (the steering column is adjustable in height) with four spokes, simple instruments are located behind it (informativeness and readability at a height). The central console of the correct rectangular shape accommodates the climate control controls (even in the poorest configuration), CD MP3 music. Buttons, knobs and switches are logically placed and allow you to blindly adjust comfort features. The central tunnel is generously dressed in "wooden" clothes.

Four configurations of the Nissan Teana J31 were available for the Russian market: 200JK, 230JK, 230JM and 350JM. The simplest one was equipped with a velor interior, dual-zone climate control, and standard Nissan music. The Nissan Tiana J31 350JM was packed to capacity and boasted a leather interior (delicate skin), climate control, a rearview camera, a color display, power front seats, heating, a massage function (passenger seat - in addition with an ottoman seat footrest), CD -changer, active bi-xenon, cruise control, keyless entry and much more. Passengers in the rear row have access to heated seats, their own music control unit, a rear window blind control drive, and a pair of air ducts.
Sitting at the back is free and comfortable, but the top of the head is crushed by the sloping roof line. The luggage compartment of the Nissan Teana J31 allows you to carry a modest 476 liters of cargo. We are pleased with the decent sound and noise insulation of the cabin, which, in tandem with the “silent” interior details, is a pleasant addition to the comfortable and high-quality inner world of Tiana under the J31 index.

Specifications- The first generation Nissan Teana is built on the front-wheel drive platform FF-L. The front suspension is independent on MacPherson struts, the rear is also independent, multi-link. Disc brakes with ABC and ESP, power steering is present. Three engines were offered for the Nissan Teana J31 in Russia, and all of them were gasoline.
Four-cylinder QR20DE 2.0 L. (136 hp) with 4 automatic transmissions. With a two-liter engine, the first generation Tiana could only satisfy a very calm driver: acceleration to “hundreds” in a long 12.5 seconds and a top speed of 180 km / h.
V-shaped "six" VQ23DE 2.3 l. (173 hp) 4 automatic transmissions. With a 2.3-liter Nissan Teana J31 engine, spur to the first hundred in 10.7 seconds and a top speed of about 200 km / h.
The top-end Nissan Tiana of the first generation was equipped with a 3.5-liter VQ35DE six-cylinder engine. (245 hp) with XTRONIC CVT-M6 CVT (with manual shifting and a choice of six fixed gears). With such an engine, the Teana J31 is distinguished by the temperament of a “hot hatch” - up to 100 km / h in 7.9 seconds with a maximum speed of 210 km / h.

Test Drive- The driving characteristics of the first generation Nissan Tiana leave a good impression. A car with a comfortable and smooth ride. Small irregularities are ignored by the suspension, large pits are “silently” swallowed, which is especially nice, while blows are not transmitted to the steering wheel. This not a small sedan irons both a direct trajectory and protracted turns calmly and predictably. Only during high-speed movement, steering flaws are revealed in the form of weak feedback. On almost any road surface, the Nissan Teana of the 2003-2008 model floats measuredly swaying and protecting its passengers from shaking, like a cruise liner on the waves.

In the secondary market of Russia, there are a lot of offers for the sale of Nissan Teana J31. Prices for the first generation Nissan Tiana in 2012 range from 300 to 900 thousand rubles, depending on the year of manufacture, the installed engine and the level of equipment.

Sales market: Japan. Right hand drive

The Teana is an upscale L-class sedan, the successor to the Cefiro. The most attractive feature of this sedan is the interior design. The control panel is arranged with the letter T and looks like an element of the living room; on the dashboard there are pointers made in the original style. It is worth highlighting the podium for the automatic transmission control lever, sofa-like seats, carefully selected finishing materials. Perhaps it is difficult to remember where before this could be found such a finish. The useful area of the cabin is also at the highest level. For maximum seating comfort in a comfortable and luxurious rear row, the rear of the doorway curves outwards. There is more than enough legroom for passengers. From the driver's seat, excellent visibility in all directions. So, the unconditional trump cards of Teana are design multiplied by practicality and comfort. But the appearance is rather restrained. But, nevertheless, a high level is felt in everything. It seems that the car is a class higher than it actually is. The start of sales in the domestic market of Japan took place in February 2003.

Based on the “premium high-end sedan” concept, depending on the level of luxury available, trim and equipment list, the Teana lineup includes the following trim levels: 200JK, 230JK, 230JM and 350JM, as well as the tuning version of Axis that appeared a little later. Standard equipment on all models includes fully automatic air conditioning with an active plasma filter, a power rear window blind. Standard equipment also includes TV/Navi/DVD and a reversing camera, an intelligent interior and trunk access system. The steering wheel is 4-spoke with leather and wood trim. The driver's seat is electrically adjustable by 50 mm (not to mention other adjustments). Depending on the configuration, such options are available as a front passenger seat with a massage function and additional support for the legs, rear seats with two-level heating, a radio control panel located in the back row, heating and the already mentioned electric blind, etc.

A few words about engines. On modifications with front-wheel drive, a 6-cylinder engine is installed, V-shaped, with a displacement of 2.3 or 3.5 liters. For the all-wheel drive version, a 4-cylinder in-line engine with a working volume of 2.5 liters is provided. Transmission: The 3.5-liter engine is paired with a CVT, while all other cars are equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. By the way, the transmission, which is installed on models with a 3.5-liter engine, is the world's first attempt to combine the X-tronic CVT system with a large-displacement engine that works in conjunction with front-wheel drive. The variator provides a 6-speed manual shift mode. Note also that the 3.5L V6 is the same powertrain as the North American spec Murano, delivering excellent traction and smooth acceleration through excellent CVT matching and peak torque as early as 2800rpm.

With all its splendor and power, the Nissan Teana is easy to drive and performs well even in tight corners, thanks to a fully independent suspension that includes A-pillars and a rear multi-link design. The V6 sedan is especially impressive in terms of dynamics: strong, jerk-free traction with sporty handling and stability at high speeds. Tire size is also a match - 215 / 55R17. With all that, Teana has excellent maneuverability: the minimum turning radius is 5.3 meters. The clearance let us down a little - 135 mm is clearly not enough for our road conditions (and even with a wheelbase of 2775 mm), but still this car was created for excellent roads.

Nissan Teana safety is a combination of familiar standards and high technologies. The airbag system includes both front and side (optional - curtain airbags). In addition, active head restraints, ABS, EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) and Brake Assist are standard. As an option, a traction control system (TCS), xenon headlights (standard since 2005 with adaptive AFS) are offered. In 2004 NASVA (Japan) crash tests, the car received five out of six stars for driver protection and six stars for passenger.

Nissan Teana is a great successor to the traditions of Cefiro, Laurel. Cars of the first generation opened a new page in the history of luxury Japanese cars. Despite the fact that the cost of servicing this business class sedan is quite affordable. The bulk of the supply in the secondary market falls on 2.3-liter versions, more serious 2.5-liter ones are noticeably rarer, not to mention top-end modifications with a 3.5-liter engine, which, oddly enough, quickly find themselves buyers - after all, we have a special relationship with solid cars.
