They are durable, have a beautiful appearance, and are easy to maintain.

High demands for practicality and ergonomics of modern new products in the automotive industry forced designers to qualitatively change the new Daewoo model. Compared to previously released models, the interior design of the cabin has a number of advantages.

Traveling long distances requires, among other things, comfort. The impressive dimensions of the sofa, a fairly large distance between the seats, between the top of the seats and the ceiling are the features of this model. Increased comfort is also ensured by the presence of a seat back adjustment mechanism.

There is a mechanism for adjusting the height of the steering column. At the same time, the steering wheel is adjustable in height and reach. Daewoo Gentra has a spacious luggage compartment, which is easy to open by pressing a button located in the door. A fresh air supply is provided to passengers in the rear seats. All this makes the car meet ergonomic requirements, and the journey itself is enjoyable.

The design of modern cars widely uses technological innovations aimed at increasing the level of design safety, ecology and computer equipment. The Daewoo Gentra has a number of interesting design elements: power steering, airbags, electric windows, air conditioning, electric adjustment and folding of side mirrors, etc.

The dashboard is made in the best traditions of minimalism. It is quite informative for a car of this level. The interior is decorated with a stylish electronic clock placed in the center, below the air duct.

The music system looks original and modern. The acoustics are good. The lack of a USB port is not decisive. The heated rear window and wiper system have been optimized and are controlled via a single button on the lower right side of the dashboard.

A system of sensors that monitor wheel speeds and vehicle speed is not provided in the basic Gentra configuration. Available only in the subsequent Optimum configuration. At the same time, there are several good airbag design features for all trim levels. The sofa, which is located at the back, has headrests; the seats are equipped with belts, rear and front. Child car seats are rigidly attached to the car body in accordance with the strict ISOFIX standard.

This is an easy-to-use and universal mount that eliminates the risk of errors when installing a car seat and increases the reliability of the mount. And this is an incomplete list of proposals aimed at increasing structural safety.

The Daewoo Gentra test drive video showed the car at an ambient temperature of minus two degrees Celsius.

It took about 8 minutes to warm up the engine. Gentra cars have a standard 1.5 liter engine with a power of 107 hp and fuel consumption of 6.9 liters per 100 km. Daewoo Gentra can be equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

In this case, a version of the car with a manual transmission is being tested. The exit was carried out in reverse mode. Reverse gear on this car is activated using an inconvenient ring on the gear shift lever. The characteristics of the clutch pedal, which is responsible for disconnecting the engine from the gearbox, ensures smooth starting and gear shifting, as well as the gas pedal, which is responsible for supplying the air-fuel mixture, were tested. The pedals are quite soft.

It feels like the transmissions can’t be said to be very clear, the moves are short. The gear lever does not have a clear move, which prevents the possibility of making a mistake in choosing gears. The gearbox came from the Daewoo Gentra from the Chevrolet Lacetti, therefore, like its predecessor, the clutch pedal has a long stroke. However, this does not affect the dynamics much.

Daewoo responds well to the action of accelerators. The car moves smoothly, without jerking.

The dynamic capabilities of the car are also very important, which you definitely need to know. Unlike the Chevrolet Lacetti, which had three engines of different sizes and power installed, the Daewoo had only one engine, the same as the Chevrolet Cobalt. Gentra engine, 16 valves, four-cylinder, chain driven.

DOHC, with distributed injection. With a power of 107 hp, torque of 134 Nm. It runs on AI 95 gasoline. Typically, throttle response is assessed by the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h and this parameter is included in the technical characteristics of the vehicle. Acceleration to the first hundred is 11.9 seconds. Maximum speed – 180 km.h. But a more important factor is the acceleration time from 80 km/h and, for example, to 120 km/h. The calculation is simple. This is important for overtaking most slow-moving vehicles.

Like most cars with 107 hp engines. Acceleration of the Daewoo Gentra is relatively slow and worsens at low speeds. After 3800 engine revolutions, when torque reaches its maximum, the car begins to accelerate. Only after reaching these parameters is it recommended to overtake. In order to technically and safely overtake (one vehicle getting ahead of another, associated with leaving the occupied lane and then returning to it in accordance with traffic regulations), you need to take into account a complex of various factors, including the conditions under which it is prohibited.

The dynamic characteristics of the car are also influenced by the ratio of weight and power. The Daewoo Gentra has sufficient maneuverability for urban conditions, which is due to the presence of a 1.5 liter engine and good traction at low and medium speeds. This makes it possible to confidently change lanes and overtake, sometimes without even downshifting.

Sound insulation in the Gentra's cabin leaves much to be desired. The noise is coming from the side. At idle engine speed, the noise in the cabin is almost inaudible. As the speed increases (1st, 2nd), the noise intensifies. It is technically possible to make additional sound insulation for the rear wheels.

The car is stable and well controlled on the highway, which is important in city traffic conditions. The transmission on the Daewoo Gentra is front-wheel drive. The steering wheel is somewhat large, but quickly responds to hand movements. The hydraulic booster takes the load off the steering, making it pleasant and comfortable. Daewoo Gentra is equipped with McPherson front suspension. The suspension design includes a shock absorber strut. The rear suspension is “multi-link” from Cobalta. This is significantly better than the beam installed on the same Chevrolet Cobalt.

For Daewoo Gentra, freedom of maneuver increases when overtaking and turning due to slight acceleration. There are disc brakes on the rear and front wheels, so sudden braking is technically possible.

Daewoo Gentra is a practical, attractive “state employee”. The car is reliable and predictable.

As a result of the test drive and based on the basic characteristics of the Daewoo Gentra, we came to the conclusion that the Gentra is a worthy successor to the Chevrolet Lacetti. The absence of some options, such as ABS, can be easily corrected by slightly increasing the cost of equipment. Daewoo Gentra is not afraid of competition in its class of cars. On June 21 of this year, we attended multi-brand test drives of cars, which were organized by the Multi Motors Group company. Read more about the event itself. On the eve of the races, we found an unfamiliar name in the list of cars offered for test drive - Daewoo Gentra. And we decided to try out this car, since little is written about inexpensive, budget models in the press. We drove along a special track through some broken asphalt, an uneven, bumpy dirt road with puddles and quite sharp turns. Then we passed an area with posts for maneuvering.

By the way, for reference: the Daewoo Gentra is nothing more than the well-known brainchild of the General Motors (GM) concern - the Chevrolet Lacetti, the production of which was discontinued under this brand. The Daewoo plant located in Uzbekistan has begun production of a model that has already been discontinued, but is still in demand. Efforts have been made to reduce production costs in order to offer customers a truly inexpensive and fairly reliable car. Reliability can be indicated by the fact that dealers offer an extended warranty of five years. The factory warranty is two years of operation or a mileage of 100 thousand km.


An example that the model for production in Uzbekistan was successfully chosen is that a large number of Lacetti work in taxis. This indicates the low cost of kilometers traveled, which is so important in this business.

About the price of the car: Gentra is available from 399,000 rubles, although for this money you won’t even get airbags (they will appear in the package for 420 thousand). For 500,000 you will already have airbags and air conditioning, but the gearbox is manual. The maximum configuration with a Korean-assembled automatic transmission (by the way, a real one - a torque converter, and not just a robotic one) will cost 549,000 rubles.


A few words about the engine. Gentra does not have a variety of power units - there is only one 16-valve 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 108 hp. The engine is quite modern, meets EURO5 standards and at the same time is understandable from the point of view of repairs. Gasoline will have to be filled with 95. Note that the timing system uses a chain, which eliminates the need for regular and expensive replacement of the timing belt.

The test drive showed that there is enough power and torque for a hard-working car. Anyone who wants more frisky behavior from Gentra can try it.


As for the interior dimensions, everything is not bad here either - even for rear passengers, and the trunk (400 liters) is actually larger than it seems from the outside.

The dashboard and dashboard are made in the faceless, traditional style of Japanese models of the 90s of the 20th century. The plastic used is quite decent, the precision of processing of interior parts is also at the level.


Although the slightly ridiculous and cheap finishing of a valuable type of wood caught my attention. Simple stripes of black or silver would look much more appropriate.

The sound of the audio system corresponds to the general budget level of the car.


The downside, in our opinion, is that the Gentra is only available as a sedan. But the Lacetti station wagon was simply created for trips to the country with things, a dog, building materials, etc.

Also, in the maximum configuration, I would like to see a climate control system, and not just a button to turn the air conditioner on and off.
Other parameters of the car - sound insulation, suspension, manual transmission, handling corresponded to the class of inexpensive cars, and did not cause irritation.

To summarize, we can say that taking into account the fact that Uzbek-made spare parts are not expensive, used cars, similar to Nexias, will be in stable demand (unless, of course, they suddenly begin to “crumble” after a certain mileage). This gives a significant advantage over Chinese cars - the Gentra's main competitors. The car is suitable for those who are primarily interested in the low price of the vehicle, as well as the cost of a kilometer traveled, and at the same time want to get all the advantages of a new car.

I think no one would refuse to drive a Lamborghini to the bakery, but in our conditions this would likely cause more difficulties than advantages.

Despite the fact that Daewoo Gentra is a budget car, the desire to refine the interior is noticeable. Daewoo keeps up with the times and tries to bring both the filling and the style to good standards as far as possible. And he doesn’t neglect pleasant bonuses.

Among its competitors, Gentra has decent basic equipment. The full package of options brings the Gentra almost to the comfort level of a European golf car.
Among competitors, this is one of the best options in terms of price/quality.

This is what a master's hand means! All in all, the eyes have narrowed slightly, the radiator grille is now smaller, more elegant, from which a good portion of chrome has been removed, the hood has become a little more prominent, the lower lip of the bumper has capriciously curved and is decorated with angry “foglights”, and the upper lip has been traced with light touches of stamping. But overall, Gentra looks much more modern.

However, the matter was limited to a spectacular facelift. From any other angle, the new product is unmistakably recognizable as none other than the Lacetti. The same one that the craftsmen of the Italian Pininfarina painted for the South Korean Daewoo 11 years ago. Even then it did not look ultra-fashionable, quite successfully combining the smooth lines characteristic of the 90s and the new sharp edges of the 21st century, and now it does not look outdated at all. And the car was given a sonorous name: from the Latin Lacertus - young, energetic, strong. In mid-2003, we wrote about this car: a replacement for the Nexia is ready, in August the new product will go on the assembly line of the UzDaewooAuto plant.

The interior of the Gentra is an exact copy of the Lacetti interior. You can unmistakably recognize it by the wonderful remote control for electric mirror adjustment in the corner of the door.

A look from the inside

There are even fewer differences in the interior than in the exterior. We have written more than once about the well-designed interior of the Lacetti - the dark soft plastic of the front panel, very decent seats upholstered in practical fabric (the texture, their two-color scheme, and the large pillow adjustment knobs remained the same), a comfortable armrest, simple but a completely understandable and quite effective air conditioner.

Ten years ago, this salon was almost record-breakingly spacious. Now, as you understand, there are more spacious cars in the “golf” class. Nevertheless, “Gentra” is very hospitable to passengers - three people can travel on the sofa, and the 185 cm tall driver can sit behind him without any problems. The spacious trunk, the lid of which still opens with a button on the driver's door, still fits two large suitcases - and there is still room left. However, there are some small changes. So, we previously praised the visibility of the Lacetti. And now the exterior mirrors have become even a little larger.

And in terms of driving, the Gentra is similar to the Lacetti in every way. The suspension, identical in design, perfectly absorbs not only small, but also large road troubles - the front one is especially good in this regard. And, of course, increased comfort results in significant rolls if you suddenly want to drive the Gentra along a winding path.

A central armrest with cup holders is a privilege of the top version. But any Gentra has a third headrest.

Something new

From the very beginning of our acquaintance, Daewoo pleasantly surprised me. The sound insulation almost completely blocks out the engine noise at idle - I even tried to start the engine while it was running a couple of times! But the engine of the new Uzbek car is completely different. If there were as many as three Lacettis - of different volumes and power from 95 to 121 hp. s., then “Gentra” from all the “Chevrolet” variety got the only in-line 1.5-liter “four” with 105 horsepower.

By the way, this is the same motor that is installed on the Cobalt. True, with some changes - a different ignition coil, electronic control unit, catalytic converter. In addition, it was necessary to install a different clutch - after all, the car also got a 5-speed manual transmission from the Lacetti. By the way, it was also installed on the 16-valve Nexia. And on the Gentra, like in the Lacetti, it irritates with long lever strokes.

In principle, this engine is enough for the Gentra. Six hundred miles through Moscow traffic jams and country highways with two passengers and luggage did not reveal any major problems. True, it immediately became clear that Gentra is intended exclusively for law-abiding drivers. Up to 60 km/h in the city its dynamics are quite sufficient, but beyond that the one and a half liter engine quickly turns sour. And on the highway you can move comfortably at the permitted speeds, but after 110 km/h the cabin becomes noisy, and overtaking on the move is difficult for the Daewoo.

I felt especially clearly the unhurried character of the Gentra when I switched from it to a 2-liter Duster - the all-wheel drive Renault seemed like a real hurricane to me!

Perhaps the only drawback of the spacious and neatly finished trunk is the uncovered hinges, which can crush luggage. A full-fledged spare wheel is hidden under the floor - however, on a steel disk

Tasty

And yet, during all five days of getting to know the car, no matter how hard I tried, I could not find any serious shortcomings in it. And the plastic pseudo-tree on the front panel didn’t irritate, and the tricky sunroof control couldn’t irritate me. And all because from the very beginning, even before I got behind the wheel, I studied the price list. So, the basic Gentra is 28 thousand cheaper than the 1.4-liter Lacetti three years ago! And at the same time better equipped. And for half a million you will get a top-spec car, perhaps without leather, and the automatic transmission for the Gentre-Elegant is a bit expensive - as much as 52 thousand. Nevertheless, such a car will remain by far the best offer in the “golf” class.

Of course, if you rummage through the list of equipment, you will find a total absence of ESP, side and window airbags and leather interior. And yet, I think, neither one nor the other, much less the third, will be able to negate the main advantage of Gentra: UzDaewoo offered us a lot of cars for very little money.

As for replacing the Nexia... It looks like it will remain on the production line for now - after all, the old one is still more than a hundred thousand cheaper.

Richer and cheaper

The basic “Comfort” package can be called a living wage. This “Gentra” has a decent electrical package, height adjustment of the driver’s seat, a folding sofa, central locking, an immobilizer, and isofix fastenings. Moreover, in terms of equipment, the car for 399 thousand is richer than the base Lacetti in terms of air conditioning, a second airbag, eyeglass case, front center armrest, fog lights, and mirrors and door handles are painted in body color. Automatic transmission will add 50,000 rubles to the base, ABS (this equipment is called “Optimum”) - 17 thousand or only 5,000 rubles. with "automatic".

“Optimum Plus” includes heated front seats and “music”, and costs 423 and 460 thousand - as you can see, the automatic transmission in this case is much cheaper. Finally, the top-end “Elegant” for 490 thousand means a pseudo-wooden finish, an adjustable steering wheel not only in angle, but also in length, a central armrest in the rear, a remote control with an audio system on the steering wheel, and even a sunroof.

Chosen by the whole world

The Daewoo Lacetti made its debut in the fall of 2002 at the Seoul Motor Show. Since then, the car has been sold under different names around the world. In Canada and Mexico the car was called "Optra", in Europe - "Nubira", in India - SRV. Moreover, he changed the car and the surname: in China it was known as the Buick Excel, in the USA - Suzuki Forenza, in Australia - Holden Viva.

The current name was chosen by marketers. After interviewing a certain number of our compatriots, they settled on the energetic “Gentra”. This name was approved by the majority of respondents.

The Daewoo Gentra model car is not as new as the manufacturer dares to claim. Even the 2019 Daewoo Gentra is not associated with a modern car, for a number of reasons, which we will discuss in more detail below.

At the moment, under this specification, the car is produced in Uzbekistan and China, where they have their own niche in the compact “C” class. At the end of the review, we advise you to pay attention to the crash test and test drive presented by Daewoo Gentra, with a study of the characteristics.

In principle, for domestic car enthusiasts the image of the Daewoo Gentra will not be unique and somehow new; everyone remembers perfectly well the famous model from Chevrolet under the Lacetti index. So, the car presented in review today is almost completely copied from it.

Perhaps, at present, the design is not so catchy, but still, domestic analogues have not gone so far in this price category, so the car is still capable of competing. Moreover, the prototype was an American development by the main minds of the Chevrolet concern.

The front part is probably the only one where you can feel the complex of work carried out to update the design. New headlights and radiator grille look harmonious. In part, the bumper also received transformations, which acquired new air intake sockets, as well as other fog lights.

From the photos presented by the Daewoo Gentra, it is clearly visible that the silhouette continues to retain the traditional motifs of the car, with straight lines, a sloping roof, not the usual elongated one, as for a sedan. If you can enjoy the novelty of the design at the front, the design of the stern remains the same.

Interior

Touching upon the topic of interior design, it is worth saying that a certain stage of renovation affected the interior, but not to the extent that many expected. The build quality is confident; in any case, the car is capable of competing with domestic Priors and Grants. In general, the interior can be described as spacious and roomy.

The front panel shows a classic speedometer unit; you won’t find any premium elements here; after all, the car is from a budget class. The steering column is characteristic of the original model, and its style completely replicates American cars from the 90s.

The center console was pleased with a new radio, apparently a two-din one. Also, the control of the stove or air conditioner was placed in a new control unit, making it more convenient than the original.

In general, the style of accommodation is not bad; the interior, although simple, looks nicer than that of its domestic counterparts. Original decorative inserts play a huge role, even if they are not made of wood, but simply decorated in this style.

The seats cannot be said to be amorphous; the fit is quite comfortable. Sensitive seats are offered for front passengers, plus tangible lateral support.

The owner we had a chance to talk to confirmed that the seats have become more comfortable. There is also plenty of space in the back; three passengers will not feel cramped, especially since the interior is really large, even for its class. It’s not for nothing that Lacetti was listed in the higher segment.

Technical indicators

The technical characteristics of the Daewoo Gentra model fully justify the cost and year of design. The engine used here is, as you understand, only one, it is 1.5 liters. unit, its capabilities allow it to produce about 107 hp.

Despite the fact that the engine is of an old design, still of an American design, the modern modernization that the engine has undergone has been able to bring it under the current Euro-5 standards. The engine is paired with several gearboxes, a familiar 5-speed manual and a modern 6-speed automatic.

Even despite the modernization, the engine cannot be called economical. In the case when the car is combined with a “mechanics”, the consumption will be about 8.5 liters. in mixed mode. Consumption with an automatic transmission increases to almost 10 liters. with the same traffic interval.

The technical characteristics of the suspension do not stand out in any way; in fact, all the developments were taken from Chevrolet. Hence the resourcefulness, after all, the car is from the budget class and partly its appearance is connected with the conquest of the Russian segment. That’s why we tried to prepare the car as much as possible for our conditions.

Despite the design of the early 2000s, the technical characteristics of the platform are amazing; even at high speeds the car feels the road consistently. By the way, many reviews from owners positively characterize the car’s maintainability, since the spare parts come from Lacetti.

Options and prices

The new Daewoo Gentra is presented on the Russian market in five real and fixed modifications. The configurations and prices compared to the prototype have expanded significantly in technological terms.

The price of the “poorest” configuration is 419,000 rubles; for that kind of money, the manufacturer is ready to provide foglights, an airbag, power accessories for all doors, adjustment, heated mirrors, an audio unit with six speakers, a manual transmission, and “wheel” adjustment (height).

For maximum equipment they require 599,000 rubles, here, in addition to the “base”, an ABS system, “casting”, rear armrest, wood decor, column height adjustment, heated seats, air conditioning, sunroof and CD radio are already available. Because there are no additional options, the price is fixed for all modifications equipped with their own list of equipment.
