Volvo v90 cross country specifications. Off-road station wagon Volvo V90 Cross Country. Volvo V90 Cross Country Driving

The Volvo V90 Cross Country station wagon is presented in Moscow. For the first time this car was shown to the general public at the Los Angeles Auto Show. In the USA, orders for the car have been accepted for more than a month, and it has become available from our dealers only now. As promises the Russian office of Volvo, the first "live" cars will appear in Russia early next year.

After the XC90 SUV and the S90 business sedan, the new Volvo V90 Cross Country will be the third model in this family to be introduced in Russia. But the standard V90 station wagon without the Cross Country prefix will probably not be sold with us. Representatives of Volvo are not sure that it will be in demand among Russian buyers, but clarify that the final decision has not yet been made.

Another SPA platform car

The new V90 Cross Country is the fourth Volvo car after the XC90, S90 and V90 to be built on the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform. This architecture has been developed by Swedish engineers over the past five years and is very important in the company's future development plans. Using SPA allows you to design new models without any reference to previously used nodes and aggregates. Moreover, it removes the constraints facing engineers on vehicle size, wheelbase length and powertrain height. The limitation, by and large, is only one: the new platform is designed to use four-cylinder engines, which is fully consistent with the company's ideology of rejecting large-volume engines.

Four-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive only

In total, there are four power units to choose from - two gasoline and two diesel. The power of the gasoline engine, designated by the T5 index, will be 249 hp, and the T6, respectively, 320 horsepower. The displacement of both engines is just under two liters, and the main differences are in the settings of the turbocharging system. It's the same story with diesels. The youngest in the D4 range produces 190 horsepower, and the older D5 - 235 horsepower. All motors are matched only with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive transmission. There are no single-wheel drive versions of the Volvo V90 Cross Country.

Crossover clearance

The new model is 68mm taller than the regular V90 station wagon, and this difference is mainly due to the increased ground clearance. In the novelty, it is 210 mm and is rightfully considered one of the largest in the class. For a surcharge, the V90 Cross Country can be fitted with air suspension, which is only fitted to the rear axle of the car - just like the S90 sedan. It does not change the ground clearance, but it is able to maintain it at the same level, regardless of the load in the trunk. The set of electronic assistants for off-road driving includes the assistance systems for descending from the mountain and starting on a slope, which are already included in the basic equipment of the model.

Designed for the adventurous traveler, ready to tackle any road - wherever it takes.

The car embodied all the innovative developments of the 90th family of the Swedish concern and conquered Russian motorists with uncompromising safety, high level of comfort, exemplary handling and dynamism.

The novelty of 2017 has expressive distinctive features: unpainted plastic in the bodywork, integrated roof rails, matte metal sill, embossed radiator grill and, of course, the legendary Thor's Hammer optics - headlights with T-shaped LED daytime running lights. Another advantage of the crossover is the spacious interior and luggage compartment, which is considered the largest in the class.

Dimensions (edit)

Thanks to its impressive dimensions, the car stands out in the city traffic and looks solid and reliable. The length of the car is 4939 mm, the width is 1652 mm, the height is 1543 mm, the wheelbase is 2941 mm.

The clearance of the model has been increased to 210 mm. This allows the car to confidently overcome any obstacle - both urban curbs and potholes and pits on rough terrain.

The maximum total weight of the machine is from 2400 to 2440 kg, depending on the modification.

Luggage compartment

Trunk volume - 723 liters. If the seats in the last row are folded down, you get a compartment with a volume of 1526 mm.

The crossover is equipped with keyless entry. This will allow you to open the trunk without hands, which is especially important, for example, when you are carrying heavy purchases.

The rear seat folding electric drive is optionally installed. When the seats are folded, you get a flat floor - a huge loading space that can be used as a full-fledged berth. This opportunity will appeal to those who like to go out into nature with an overnight stay.

A distinctive feature of the Volvo V90 Cross Country is its impeccably organized space. In the trunk there is a niche for small things on the gas stops, below there is a compact spare wheel.

Specifications

The all-terrain station wagon demonstrates impressive dynamic properties. The maximum speed of the vehicle is 210-230 km / h, depending on the version of the power unit. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes 6.3–8.8 s.

When driving in the urban cycle, diesel engines have a fuel consumption of 6.1–6.2 liters per 100 km / track, and gasoline engines - 9.3–10.2 liters. When driving on the highway, diesel units consume 4.8–5.2 liters of fuel per 100 km of track, gasoline units - 6.2–6.6 liters.

As you can see, the performance characteristics of the model once again emphasize the off-road character of the car.

Engines

Russian buyers are offered a choice of 4 types of engines with a working volume of 2 liters:

  • Gasoline T6 AWD 320 hp;
  • Petrol 249 hp T5;
  • Turbodiesel D5 AWD with a capacity of 235 hp;
  • Turbo diesel 190 hp D4 AWD. Our 2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country review features a car with this type of engine.

Together with the motors, an eight-band Japanese machine gun Aisin works.

Powertrains comply with current environmental regulations. CO2 emissions range from 139 to 184 g / km.

Station wagons are equipped with all-wheel drive. The Volvo V90 Cross Country system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch and functions as follows: in standard road conditions, front-wheel drive is used, but when the situation changes, the torque is redistributed between the axles in such a way that provides the car with high-quality cross-country ability, stability even on slippery surfaces and efficient acceleration ...

Exterior

Increased ground clearance, large-diameter wheels, wheel arch protectors, painted black or made to match the body - all this in a station wagon of the latest generation.

The exterior of the Volvo V90 Cross Country has the distinctive corporate design of the 90 Series. This is a massive front end with a brutal grille, the shape of which is emphasized by chrome edging, stylish optics, a high sill line, a short front overhang and sports fenders, as well as wheels with a memorable design. The athletic silhouette of the car is formed by elements made in a single style: chrome roof rails and metal sills.

Interior

The Swedish off-road station wagon is truly your comfort zone. A spacious cabin filled with air and light, as well as leather and wood trim will allow you to enjoy every trip. Thanks to natural materials in the car, you will not feel any foreign odors. Even the rugs are made from recycled materials and do not smell in the heat, which is especially important for children and people suffering from allergies.

When decorating the station wagon's interior, the designers relied on laconicism and clean, confident lines. You will not find unnecessary buttons on the dashboard and center console: everything you need is at hand, which greatly simplifies the process of driving. The control is carried out via a tablet computer. It is very easy to work with it - the icons are similar to the images on your smartphone.

All elements are worked out to the smallest detail - from the shift knobs to the ignition lock. The torpedo and door cassettes are trimmed with leather.

The steering wheel is multifunctional: on the right is the audio control, on the left is the adaptive cruise control. The steering wheel is adjustable in height and reach. This will allow a person of any size to sit comfortably in the driver's seat.

The state-of-the-art Bowers & Wilkins audio system supports the surround sound option. You can listen to your favorite songs in excellent quality.

The CleanZone system purifies the air by removing dust from it, and the Sensus navigation system will help you quickly find your way in an unfamiliar city. Set the route and go boldly! Also in the car you can set up your own Wi-Fi point.

The rear seats are equipped with a center armrest, which contains two cup holders and compartments for small items.

Test drive results

During the test drive, Favorit Motors experts proved that the Volvo V90 Cross Country is a reliable partner.

Drivers note good visibility, which is achieved thanks to large mirrors, as well as excellent acceleration at any speed - this is especially important.

A spacious interior with a well-thought-out storage system, a large trunk with the ability to transform, many systems and assistants providing real roadside assistance, dynamism and maneuverability - everything in the new station wagon confirms that it will perfectly recommend itself as a reliable and safe family car.

Among other expected premieres of the Paris Motor Show in October 2016, viewers will be able to see the new Volvo V90 Cross Country off-road wagon based on the V90 model. The novelty promises to be modern and technological.

The all-terrain vehicle provides you with a calm, comfortable and cozy atmosphere created with the help of verified ergonomics, natural materials, an abundance of space and light in the cabin. One of the world's best audio systems, developed in collaboration with Bowers & amp Wilkins, also plays a special role here.

Volvo V90 Cross Country Engines

At the start of sales, the Volvo V90 Cross Country is equipped with four engines of the Drive-E family. These are gasoline T5 and T6, and diesel D4 and D5, which have already proven themselves in the XC90 model. All engines are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

Volvo always pays special attention to safety issues.

Quick jump to sections

Volvo V90 Cross Country is a car that was created specifically to give family residents of the city the opportunity to get out into nature, without experiencing any difficulties with the road, while enjoying all the advantages and comfort of a passenger car. For many years, such a car was its predecessor - the legendary Scandinavian off-road wagon Volvo XC70.

There are few cars of this type, but there are, for example, 220 d All-Terrain, allroad quattro or. Nevertheless, in Russia, and perhaps in the world, the XC70 held a leading position in the segment of versatile family cars, and at the same time is still passenger cars. But no matter how confident the model feels on the market, it is impossible to maintain leadership without profound changes. Realizing this, the Swedish company has taken a decisive step by presenting to the world a completely new all-terrain and high-status station wagon. Volvo V90 Cross Country - so now the dream of a zealous family man is called.

The station wagon can be fun

Looking at what the 2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country looks like, it feels like it should be a worthy successor to the legendary XC70. Volvo's new station wagon is built on a modular SPA platform, the same one that underpins the Volvo XC90. One can only wonder how the Swedes managed in the most boring segment of station wagons to create such a fast, solid and elegant car, despite the fact that its length is almost 5 meters.

It is difficult to call the interior of the V90 Cross Country completely revolutionary, simply because conceptually it retained everything that was first demonstrated in the cabin of the new Volvo XC90. The same multimedia system tablet in the center console, the same comfortable seats that protect the spine from extreme overload in the event of an accident, the same premium sound from Bowers & Wilkins. Everything looks familiar, only a little more comfortable and harmonious.

Why Volvo V90 Cross Country?

Suppose you are a customer who can afford this class of cars and goes to a Volvo dealership to buy a new car. The question arises: why should he prefer the 2017 V90 Cross Country station wagon, when he could get the Volvo XC90 crossover?

Yes, the Volvo V90 Cross Country is large, 4.93 cm long, spacious - a wheelbase of almost 3 meters, prepared for off-road - it has four-wheel drive and a ground clearance of 210 mm, with a spacious trunk, for a passenger wagon. But the Volvo XC90 is also big and serious, but it is also a three-row, 7-seater and also a crossover.

The place where you can answer this question as accurately and clearly as possible is an asphalt suburban highway. Despite the completely off-road ground clearance of 210 mm, the Volvo V90 Cross Country 2017 behaves exceptionally well on the road. Swaying when cornering and changing lanes is minimal. In addition to comfort, this also adds a sense of security.

Almost self-governing

Volvo is one of the few, if not the only automaker in the world to integrate an almost complete package of safety assistants into every model, even in the most affordable basic configuration. Among the electronic assistants of the Volvo B90 Cross Country, there are: an all-round visibility system, tracking blind spots, an automatic parking assistant, an intersection assistance system, a warning of an involuntary exit from a road to a roadside, a warning about driver fatigue, a road sign reading system, and an emergency stopping in front of an obstacle, be it a car, a person or an animal.

The 2017 Volvo B90 Cross Country is no different from the XC90 in terms of assistants, and in some ways even surpasses it. For example, the second generation Pilot Assist is installed here. In fact, this is an adaptive cruise control coupled with lane control.
The fact that the system is activated and monitors not only the speed of the car in front, the speed of your car, but also the lane that the car occupies, is indicated by a green cryptogram on the digital dashboard of the car.

During a test drive of the Volvo V90 Cross Country, I repeatedly took my foot off the gas pedal and my hands off the steering wheel, entrusting control of the car. Everything works great. True, after about a minute, the system asks the driver not to take control, but simply put his hand on the steering wheel. That's right, no matter how perfect the car is, according to the current legislation, the driver is responsible for what happens to the car.

At the same time, the assistant continues to drive the car, monitors the distance, speed and compliance with the lane. A distinctive feature of the improved version of the second generation Pilot Assist, among other things, is that it now operates at speeds up to 130 km / h. In an earlier version of the assistant, the speed threshold was set much earlier.

Volvo V90 Cross Country Driving

Our brains and consciousness are so tuned that they always strive for simplicity. What is simplicity in controls? This is when one button is responsible for one function and once it was really so. But the whole point is that modern cars are becoming so technologically advanced that if we brought under each button, a separate option, function or assistant, then the entire space around the driver would be hung with buttons.

Realizing this, Swedish designers have endowed the Volvo V90 Cross Country interior with extreme asceticism. If we talk about the number of controls or the very buttons, there are only six of them and almost all of them are related to playing music.

All the incredible functionality of controlling climate settings, multimedia, navigation, communication and other car options - the driver controls all this exclusively with the index finger of his right hand. Doing no more than two taps or swiping gestures to select, disable or enable the desired option. With the same index finger of the right hand.

And in the Volvo V90 Cross Country, it is equipped not only with a sign reading system, which shows which road sign we are in, but also the sign that will be next. So, a large icon 60 may appear in front of the driver, and a small 40 km / h sign is already hiding behind it - this will be the next road sign. The fact that the 2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country has a good overview in all directions also helps to drive.

Dynamics Volvo V90 Cross Country

No wonder the Volvo V90 Cross Country has 320 hp under the hood. Someone may grin sarcastically about the fact that all Volvo engines have only 4 cylinders. Yes, those 320 hp enclosed in a small, 2-liter 4-cylinder engine.

This is Volvo's current green policy. Instead of reinventing the bicycle, they decided to simply limit the volume of their engines to two liters, and now every new Volvo model has only two engines under the hood: one gasoline and one diesel. Four-cylinder, two-liter, covering the entire power range.

But what is most important in a car if you like fast movement? Of course, the dynamics. And the dynamics are enough here. 6.3 seconds "to hundreds", 400 Nm of torque. Only the sonorous, surprised childish voice of the engine, which nevertheless erupts with a dynamic set of speed from the engine compartment, tells us that there are no miracles, and two liters sound like two liters. Despite the twin turbocharging.

Why the Volvo V90 Cross Country is better than a crossover

On a mountain road insulated with potholes, cracks, bumps, you understand why the buyer should prefer the Volvo V90 Cross Country over the big XC90 crossover. Yes, everyone knows that the crossover is the most popular class of cars today and its popularity continues to grow. But you need to turn on your head and listen to the objective argument.

The center of gravity of the Volvo V90 Cross Country, despite the 210 mm ground clearance, is significantly lower. Thanks to this, the body swing is noticeably less. Steering reactions are sharper.

The suspension accurately draws the trajectory. No microscopic steering. If the terrain of the road surface is a dug surface, then the car will naturally throw from side to side, but at the same time it will keep its course clearly. This, by the way, is a sign of the suspension pedigree. There is no need to do micro-steering here, even on a disgusting road.

What about the rolls? You rarely see this when a five-meter car, a station wagon, moreover, behaves on the road just like an ordinary C- or D-class sedan. A very pleasant feeling. There is another system that is now spreading to different manufacturers. At Volvo it is called the Volvo Account and allows you to inquire about traffic jams or ask to book a table at a restaurant.

Volvo V90 Cross Country rolls off the asphalt

During a test drive of the Volvo V90 Cross Country, we drove into rough terrain, coupled with mountain climbs. Driving on rocky ground with difficult terrain and large elevation differences. The off-road arsenal of the Volvo V90 Cross Country is not impressive. Nevertheless, the driver has access to: 210 mm ground clearance, four-wheel drive, an all-round visibility system that allows you to get detailed information about what is happening around the car in general and under its wheels in particular.

There is also an assistant when the descent, as well as offroad mode, to activate which just press one button. But even this modest set is enough to confidently storm the steep slopes of the mountain pass. The cross-country ability of the Volvo V90 Cross Country is at the level of the average urban crossover.

The diagonal hanging of the 2017 Volvo B90 Cross Country was also carried out. Often during this exercise, either the car doors start to behave strangely or the boot lid won't close. The doors passed the exam without problems, but the main exam for body rigidity is the trunk lid. With her, as a rule, there are problems when hanging, but not with the Volvo V90 Cross Country. With the geometry and rigidity of the body, everything is fine.

By the way, about the trunk. There is keyless and handless access to the luggage compartment, that is, with a swing of the foot. The luggage compartment itself of the Volvo V90 Cross Country offers a standard set of practical features. The folding process of the rear sofa backs is automated. After folding, the car owner receives a perfectly horizontal boot floor with a maximum volume of 1526 liters. Likewise, the trunk is kicked and closed. With the geometry and rigidity of the body, everything is fine.

Volvo V90 Cross Country 2017 price

On the Volvo V90 Cross Country 2017, the price starts at 2,990,000 rubles and finishes somewhere around 4 million rubles. Of course, there are also packages of additional equipment with which the cost of a car can exceed 5 million rubles. And even then, its price will be 25-30% lower than the cost of a similarly equipped mid-size crossover of the premium segment.

If we summarize all that we have learned about the Volvo v90 Cross Country, we can safely conclude: everything is fine with it, both with its appearance and with manufacturability, driving performance and premium quality. The Swedes managed to create a truly versatile car that is very easy to want to own and very difficult to buy.

The point here is not at all in the price of the Volvo V90 Cross Country, but in the fact that having accumulated the required amount after long doubts, you will go to the dealership and buy yourself a Volvo XC90. No, you won't lose by favoring a crossover. You just do "like everyone else", thereby depriving yourself of the opportunity to become special.
