The Volvo V90 Cross Country station wagon is presented in Moscow. For the first time this car was shown to the general public at the Los Angeles Auto Show. In the USA, orders for the car have been accepted for more than a month, and it has become available from our dealers only now. As promises the Russian office of Volvo, the first "live" cars will appear in Russia early next year.
After the XC90 SUV and the S90 business sedan, the new Volvo V90 Cross Country will be the third model in this family to be introduced in Russia. But the standard V90 station wagon without the Cross Country prefix will probably not be sold with us. Representatives of Volvo are not sure that it will be in demand among Russian buyers, but clarify that the final decision has not yet been made.
Another SPA platform car
The new V90 Cross Country is the fourth Volvo car after the XC90, S90 and V90 to be built on the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform. This architecture has been developed by Swedish engineers over the past five years and is very important in the company's future development plans. Using SPA allows you to design new models without any reference to previously used nodes and aggregates. Moreover, it removes the constraints facing engineers on vehicle size, wheelbase length and powertrain height. The limitation, by and large, is only one: the new platform is designed to use four-cylinder engines, which is fully consistent with the company's ideology of rejecting large-volume engines.
Four-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive only
In total, there are four power units to choose from - two gasoline and two diesel. The power of the gasoline engine, designated by the T5 index, will be 249 hp, and the T6, respectively, 320 horsepower. The displacement of both engines is just under two liters, and the main differences are in the settings of the turbocharging system. It's the same story with diesels. The youngest in the D4 range produces 190 horsepower, and the older D5 - 235 horsepower. All motors are matched only with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive transmission. There are no single-wheel drive versions of the Volvo V90 Cross Country.
Crossover clearance
The new model is 68mm taller than the regular V90 station wagon, and this difference is mainly due to the increased ground clearance. In the novelty, it is 210 mm and is rightfully considered one of the largest in the class. For a surcharge, the V90 Cross Country can be fitted with air suspension, which is only fitted to the rear axle of the car - just like the S90 sedan. It does not change the ground clearance, but it is able to maintain it at the same level, regardless of the load in the trunk. The set of electronic assistants for off-road driving includes the assistance systems for descending from the mountain and starting on a slope, which are already included in the basic equipment of the model.
