The BMW E53 became the basis for cars of the BMW X5 SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) class. E53 was produced from 1999 to 2006. This model was originally developed for the American markets, and since at that time it owned the Range and Land Rover brands, many components were borrowed from them. For example, the developers adopted two systems - the Hill Descent system and the Off-road engine control system. Other electronic components and the engine were taken from the BMW E39 5 Series. Sales of the car in the USA started in 1999, and in 2000 in Europe. The letter “X” in the model name means all-wheel drive, and the number 5 means that the model is based on the 5 Series.

In detail

The first sketches of the BMW X5 E53 were presented in the late 90s by designer Chris Bangle. Some design elements were also borrowed from the Range Rover, such as the design of the rear doors. But unlike the British Range Rover, the German BMW was intended to be a sportier car, and this ultimately led to a reduction in its off-road capabilities. In addition, 62% of the torque comes from the car's rear-wheel drive, which also makes it sportier.

The interior equipment of the car was made using the most advanced technologies. It was equipped with multimedia capabilities such as Bluetooth, MP3 and DVD navigation. In 2002, the sports model X5 4.6is appeared. Both the interior and exterior trim were changed, and the model was equipped with 20-inch wheels. In addition, the car has a new engine with a power of 342 hp and a volume of 4.6 liters. A few years after this, another model will appear, the X5 4.8is, which will be equipped with a 360 hp engine. and volume 4.8 l. It is this model that will later be called the fastest SUV in the world.

Restyling

In 2003, the updated BMW X5 E53 model was presented to the public. The main differences are a new drive, new headlights (taken from the E39), an upgraded engine and several interior trim options. The new drive had more capabilities, so if the old one used a rigidly set torque value - 38% front-wheel drive and 62% rear-wheel drive, then the new one had a built-in system that dynamically distributed engine power towards one or the other drive. Everything depended on a certain road situation, and if necessary, the torque could reach 100% on one of the drives.

The X5 4.4i model was equipped with a new engine, which was developed in 2002 for 7 Series cars. Its power was increased by 25 hp. In April 2004, the 4.6is, as already mentioned above, was replaced by the 4.8is model. Its 4.8 liter engine was later used in the 2005 750i. The appearance of the 4.8is has been slightly changed compared to the 4.6is. For example, the lower bumper began to be painted the same color as the body. Also, chrome exhaust tips were installed, and the size of the discs increased to 20 inches. From 2004 to 2006, the company did not make any changes to either the internal or external equipment of the E53. BMW developers concentrated all their efforts on creating a new model, which appeared in 2006. Starting in 2006, it began to produce a new model, the BMW X5 E70.

BMW X5 is one of the first premium SUVs. The Bavarian company, despite the lack of experience in creating SUVs, decided in the mid-90s of the twentieth century to invest in a new segment for itself, considering its enormous potential. As subsequent years showed, this was the right move. After the X5 model, X3, X6, X1 and most recently X4 appeared.

It all started with the BMW X5 E53 series, introduced in 1999. The car quickly attracted the attention of wealthy clients. The SUV captivated us with its excellent dynamics, excellent handling on the highway and excellent suitability for everyday life.

Despite the fact that two decades have passed since the appearance of this model, many copies are not cheap at all. Even the very first samples in decent condition cost at least 500,000 rubles, and this is only 100,000 rubles less than the mega popular Kia Rio or Hyundai Solaris. But, on the other hand, the new BMW X5, albeit of a different one - the third generation, costs almost 7 times more! However, we are dealing with a car that offers much more than other crossovers.

Design features

The BMW X5 is the complete opposite of the imposing Volvo XC90, which rolls in turns like a sailboat in the wind. The German SUV is stable thanks not only to the perfect design of the multi-link suspension, but also due to the efficient operation of the all-wheel drive system. Before restyling in 2003, all wheels had permanent all-wheel drive and a central differential. This transmission is great on the highway, but is helpless off-road, as it is completely devoid of classic differential locks. The locking function is assigned to the brake system, which slows down the slipping wheel.

The “combat potential” of the car is also significantly limited by low ground clearance. As standard it is 176 mm. In the version with controlled air suspension, the ground clearance can only be increased to 235 mm, while the Mercedes ML could raise the body to 300 mm.

Interior condition at 340,000 km.

In addition, wide tires and a self-supporting body are further confirmation that the X5 was not intended for off-road use. His element is asphalt. However, this is where most modern SUVs live.

During restyling, the German SUV received a more interesting all-wheel drive system - intelligent xDrive. It is much better suited for forced overcoming difficult areas.

Engines and gearboxes

The first BMW X5s were equipped only with gasoline engines: 3.0 l / 231 hp. (M54B30) and 4.4 l / 286 hp. (M62B44TU). Not surprising, since the crossover was primarily intended for the American market.

It soon became clear that the BMW X5 fully corresponds to the tastes of Europeans. In 2000, a 3-liter inline six-cylinder turbodiesel with 184 hp was offered for them. (M57D30), which consumes an average of 10-11 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km.

In 2002, the engine range was supplemented by a 4.6-liter/347 hp 8-cylinder petrol engine. (M62B46).

The 4.4-liter M62 unit was equipped with a Vanos variable valve timing system (additional designation TU). The most common ailments: high oil consumption, problems with the crankcase ventilation system and malfunctions of the variable valve timing system (vanos).

The most widespread were the X5 with the 3-liter inline six M54. The engine has an electronic throttle body, an aluminum block and variable valve timing on both camshafts. The only serious problem with the engine is related to the design of the crankcase ventilation system. The valve becomes clogged with sludge quite quickly. Mechanics recommend updating it every 2-3 oil changes.

After the September restyling of 2003, the 6-cylinder turbodiesel was modernized. Its power increased to 218 hp. (M57D30TU). The 8-cylinder 4.4 increased its power to 320 hp. (N62B44).

In 2004, the top-end X5 4.8is was released with the eight-cylinder N62B48, which offered 360 hp. and 500 Nm of torque.

Cars with a diesel engine under the hood accelerate quite impressively. In this they are not much inferior to versions with a 4.4-liter block. But the BMW X5 with top-end petrol V8 - 4.6 is / 347 hp - can deliver the most emotions. and 4.8 is / 360 hp (since late 2003). The most powerful of them accelerates the SUV to “hundreds” in just 6.1 seconds and allows it to reach a top speed of 246 km/h.

Transmission

Before restyling, the diesel engine was coupled with a GM 5-speed automatic transmission, so as the speed increased, the fuel appetite also increased significantly. Then he received a 6-speed automatic from ZF.

For large gasoline engines, the only available gearbox was a ZF 6-speed automatic.

A 6-speed manual could be combined with a 218-horsepower turbodiesel (since 2003) and a 3-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine. The clutch of the box wears out very quickly, especially during dynamic driving in the city.

Version 3.0i was equipped with a GM automatic transmission until the end of production. This box is considered the least successful, especially in pre-restyling versions (before September 2003). The ZF automatic is more reliable and efficient.

Equipment

Despite the lack of outstanding off-road capabilities, the X5 was in great demand. As it turns out, excellent dynamics and good driving performance are all that many customers need. An additional plus: a stylish and comfortable interior with a good amount of space in both rows. There is a wide variety of equipment options on the market - the result of an impressive list of options, thanks to which the first owners customized the car to suit themselves.

Basically, all copies have rich equipment, including navigation, power windows and side mirrors, parking sensors, xenon headlights, a tire pressure monitoring system and even voice control of some functions. Leather upholstery is very common, and the interior can be decorated with wood or aluminum.

After the facelift, climate control became standard equipment. Safety is ensured by front and side curtain airbags, as well as the DSC stability control system, which interacts with the xDrive all-wheel drive system.

The BMW X5 e53 is aimed primarily at public roads. Of course, it can handle dirt roads or even cross a motocross track. The latter will most likely result in chassis damage. SUV is designed to enjoy unique handling.

Everyday life of the owner

Initially, problems were caused more by cars assembled before the facelift. The reason is not only mechanical reliability, but also the quality of workmanship, which simply did not meet German standards. BMW was just getting started producing cars in the United States, and it took the Spartanburg plant several years to reach German quality standards.

The copies of the first years of production were disturbed by a cheap interior, weak electronics and build quality. Four recall campaigns were required to correct, for example, faults and incorrect installation of the brakes (until 2002), fixing the brake pedal mounting and seat belt mechanism.

Before you decide to buy a BMW X5, there is one thing you need to understand. The German is not at all cheap to operate. Even if you only need to replace consumables, the bill could reach $500.

The main source of particularly large costs is suspension. There are so many items that wear out quickly that, despite the large number of replacements, the cost of repairs can be about $1,000. And this is outside the walls of the official service. For example, an original lever costs about $200, and an analogue one costs about $100.

When repairing an air suspension, the price tag will double. For the front shock absorber alone you will have to pay about $600. Pneuma was used in top-end petrol versions.

With age, corrosion is inevitable at the bottom of the tailgate.

The BMW X5 has a lot of electronics. But in well-maintained restyled examples it does not break down too often. However, sometimes problems arise with the satellite navigation, computer display, heated seats, central locking, electric windows or electric folding rear view mirrors.

The power units are quite modern and quite reliable. They all have a durable timing chain. With proper care, gasoline engines do not cause problems even with long mileages. All that has to be changed is the ignition coils (costing about $40) and the viscous coupling of the cooling fan - about $180.

The viscous coupling is also the weak point of the 3-liter turbodiesel. In addition, after 200,000 km, a diesel engine cannot avoid problems with injectors, which fortunately can be repaired for relatively little money - 50-100 dollars apiece. Other typical turbodiesel maladies: fuel pump ($400) and turbocharger. The cost of the latter is about $1,500, so many owners resort to restoring it - around $400.

Be careful with automatic transmission. The average service life is only 200,000 km, and the cost of repairs reaches $1000-1500. As for the all-wheel drive system, it does not often fail in pre-restyling cars. In later X5s, the electric drive for engaging the clutch sometimes fails, and in addition, the anthers and drive shaft joints wear out faster.

In addition to repair costs, you will also have to fork out for gasoline, especially for owners of the BMW X5 with a 4.4-liter engine. Don't forget about tax. Before you buy an X5, you should carefully check the car at a service center that is familiar with this model - about 60-80 dollars.

Beware of damaged cars

During the inspection, you should pay attention to uneven joints on the body, uneven wear of the tire tread, as well as stability while driving. The vehicle should not pull to one side, yaw, or vibrate noticeably. If the seller says that this is normal, then run away from him.

Conclusion

In the case of an elderly BMW X5, it is certainly better to choose an example with high mileage, but with invoices confirming recent repairs (especially the automatic transmission), than to buy a car with “suspiciously low mileage” in “perfect condition” and after a month spend several thousand dollars on repairs. Remember that the BMW X5, despite its attractive price, has high operating costs.

Ground clearance is the distance between the road surface where the vehicle is located and its lowest point. It is also called clearance and is measured in millimeters. High ground clearance, as a rule, indicates good cross-country ability of the vehicle. All BMW X5 models can boast of sufficient performance for passing poor-quality roads or absolute off-road conditions, which cannot but please car owners of the above-mentioned cars.

As a rule, ground clearance indicators directly affect the stability indicators of the BMW X5, subject to high speed performance. Every car owner needs to know what ground clearance his car has, since this can be considered as a guarantee of comfortable driving and there will be no need for unnecessary cash costs associated with unscheduled repair work, passing obstacles or parking.

By the way, you can independently measure the indicators described above, for which you should use an ordinary ruler (you will also need an inspection hole with smooth ramps). First, make sure that the pressure inside the tires meets the standard. Then remove everything unnecessary from under the car and you can measure.

e53 performance

Traditionally, the clearance figures for the BMW X5 in the E53 body are 209 millimeters. This value can be considered quite sufficient for a confident assault on many city edges and comfortable behavior even on off-road terrain, which has an average difficulty of overcoming. So some drivers decide to install engine crankcase protection. If it is already installed, it “eats” about 7 millimeters.

e70 performance

The ground clearance in the E70 body is 222 millimeters, which is 13 millimeters more compared to the E53. Accordingly, the aerodynamics in this case turn out to be slightly worse. However, any off-road conditions or poor-quality surfaces will not become a problem for such a vehicle. The car automatically adjusts the ground clearance based on what conditions are observed and what loads exist.

Determining the minimum ground clearance depends on several factors.

If related to the design, then from:

  • wheel size;
  • the presence of protection.

In principle, all BMW X5 cars are equipped with innovative technology that adjusts their heights. Sensors regularly measure the distances that exist between the surface and the axle located at the rear.

For example, when a heavy load is carried in the trunk, the reduction in ground clearance can be compensated by a special compressor device that adjusts the air suspension on the rear axle. Thanks to this, the ground clearance remains unchanged at all times, the car demonstrates maneuverability, and passengers are in absolute safety.

New BMW x5 is still in good demand both among official dealers and on the secondary market. Buyers are not afraid of the high price of the BMW X5 and expensive car maintenance. On top of everything else, there is the problem of frequent car theft. Therefore, running into a stolen X5 in the car market is common.

Despite all the difficulties associated with a sports crossover from Germany... more precisely from the USA, because the only full-cycle plant is located in America, from where the model is exported to 140 countries. Americans send ready-made machine kits for screwdriver assembly to several other countries.

The third generation X5 in the F15 body received a new platform, although the dimensions remained virtually unchanged; the car received a new power structure of the body and other external body parts. If in Russia they only offer xDrive all-wheel drive, then in the USA you can buy a rear-wheel drive BMW X5. The engines on our market are 3-liter turbodiesels of varying power, plus 3 and 4.4 liter gasoline units. The hybrid version of the X5 eDrive is not offered in our country.

Appearance X5 after the latest exterior update, it is made in a new corporate style. A more expressive radiator grille, updated optics, raised body panels, all this emphasizes the sporty look. The silhouette familiar from the first generation has been preserved without major changes. Let's look at the photos of the appearance of the new BMW X5 below.

Technical characteristics of BMW x5

In technical terms, the new BMW X5 crossover has quite interesting characteristics. For example, an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.31 Cx was achieved in an interesting way. There are air dampers in the front bumper, which, using air ducts in the front wings, regulate air flow to reduce air resistance.

The 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission has not only an adaptive mode, but also modes for sporty or economical driving. Under certain conditions, the coasting function is activated, which allows saving up to 5% of fuel. By the way, the diesel version is equipped with a 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

The 3-liter X-5 diesel engine with a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry has 4 power options: 218, 249, 313 and 381 horsepower. This spread is achieved by using one, two or even three turbines simultaneously. Torque varies from 500 to 740 Nm. The average consumption of diesel fuel is from 6 to 7 liters.

There are two BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol turbo engines, this is an in-line 3-liter 6-cylinder BMW X5 xDrive 35i 306 hp. (400 Nm) and a more powerful V8 4.4 liter X5 xDrive 50i 450 hp. (650 Nm). Accelerating to hundreds with a 3-liter engine takes 6.5 seconds with an average fuel consumption of 8.5 liters. The 4.4 liter power unit allows you to accelerate in 5 seconds, consuming an average of 9.6 liters.
