How to choose a good xenon kit?

The selection of a suitable xenon light source for a car should be based on two factors: the reputation and reliability of the manufacturer and the required brightness of the lamps.

What should a xenon kit consist of?

The complete set of gas-discharge bulbs for head light or fog lamps includes:

  • lighting sources designed for a certain power and having a specific marking;
  • ignition device;
  • a set of wires and elements for connecting and fixing lamps.

The ignition unit is a module designed to supply a certain amount of voltage required for activation to light sources. More expensive blocks have a more complicated design, which allows them to control a larger number of processes. If the device is of high quality, it will be able to ensure long-term and uninterrupted operation of light elements. This is due to the fact that when lighting the lamps, the main technical parameters are observed in the required range.

Xenon marking

The marking of gas discharge devices can be 5000K, 6000K, etc. This parameter determines the color temperature, that is, the brightness and shade of the light bulb. If the marking of the devices is 4300K, then the light will be whiter and have a yellowish tint. The use of such sources is relevant in PTF and head optics. They are more efficient when driving on wet roads.

Devices rated for 5000K have a white glow. Their power is higher, and the light itself is more pleasant for perception by the human eye. Bulbs at 6000K have a blue tint and, as a result of low light output, are inferior to previous options in terms of power. However, this type of device is more popular among our compatriots. Regularly, in the production of cars, companies install xenon lamps designed for 4200-5000K.

The AvtoGSM channel in the video unpacked and made a brief overview of the xenon package from the manufacturer Show-Mi.

Which xenon is better?

It is not a fact that an expensive set of discharge lamps will function efficiently and efficiently. When buying an ignition unit, it is also recommended to pay attention to the cost.

It is necessary to choose a device that matches the technical parameters of the machine. For example, if the car is not equipped with a module for controlling the voltage of light bulbs, then it makes no sense to buy xenon with a "trick". This will not affect the quality of his work in any way.

It is not advisable to purchase thin ignition blocks called “slim” if there is a lot of space in the engine compartment for mounting a standard device. The cost of such "devices" is higher. And if the block is cheap, then as a rule, it is made of low-quality materials, the assembly also leaves much to be desired.

The most popular manufacturers of xenon lamps

Manufacturers of gas-discharge lighting sources that have proven themselves among consumers:

  • Sho-Me (Show-Mi);
  • Mitsumi;
  • Xenotex;
  • Osram;
  • Hella;
  • Philips;
  • Bosch;
  • APP Digital Ultra Slim.

The Test Lab channel talked about the nuances that will distinguish the original Osram xenon from a fake.

Preparation for self-installation and connection of xenon in a car

Every driver can replace standard bulbs and install xenon on their own. When performing installation, the main thing is to be guided by the manufacturer's recommendations and follow the diagram.

In order not to spoil the light bulbs, the bulb of the light source must not be touched with your fingers.

If this happens, then the surface with the imprint must be treated with a clean rag with alcohol. Be sure to disconnect the battery before performing the task. When started, gas-discharge light sources produce 23 thousand volts of voltage, this will be fatal to humans.

What may be required to connect?

To quickly install gas-discharge lighting sources, you will need:

  • set of lamps;
  • stationery knife or scissors;
  • Phillips screwdriver;
  • plastic clamps;
  • drill with a 25 mm cutter;
  • set of wrenches.

Xenon installation scheme

Installation diagram via battery-powered relay

The process of installation and connection is carried out as follows:

  1. First, the old light sources are removed, new ones are installed instead. To complete the task, the plastic protective cover installed on the optical instruments is dismantled. Electrical wiring is disconnected from halogens or incandescent lamps. Removing the device may require the removal of a special retainer or clip.
  2. The gas-discharge lamp is carefully removed from the protective flask and mounted in the hole on the lantern. If a special clamp is used for fastening, then it must be fixed. If there is a spring, the electrical circuit from gas-discharge lamps must be pulled through this element. After the wiring is displayed through the plug into the engine compartment.
  3. It will be problematic to conduct an electrical circuit next to the battery. The battery usually blocks access to the flashlight, so it will have to be dismantled. After the light sources are installed, their contact elements are connected to the ignition unit.
  4. Then you need to make special holes in the plugs of optical devices, through which the power line will be laid. In the case when the protective cover is made of rubber, scissors must be used for laying. If the plug is made of metal, then a hole will have to be drilled to pull the wire through it. For this, a milling cutter is used, a 2.5 cm part is best.
  5. After completing this task, a place is selected to install the ignition device. It will be located next to optical instruments. It is important that the power supply circuit is not stretched.
  6. When installing the ignition unit, it is recommended to choose a place where the device will not be exposed to high temperatures, moisture, and dirt. By themselves, these devices are usually sealed, but it is better to take this rule into account. If there is no such place under the hood, then the device must be wrapped with tape or electrical tape, this will partially increase its safety. Fixing the block is carried out by means of plastic clamps or adhesive tape.

Xenon connection diagram

More about how to connect xenon:

  1. Light sources are connected to the ignition unit. Each electrical circuit has a specific color marking, detailed connection information is indicated in the diagram.
  2. Then the unit itself is connected to the standard wiring system. To accomplish this task, one line from the device goes to the block where the old light source was connected.
  3. The second lamp is connected in the same way. First, it is connected to the ignition unit, and then to the electrical wiring of the machine.
  4. Fixation of electrical circuits is carried out by means of plastic clamps. If the length of the wire is large, it is recommended to twist it into a ring.

How to install and connect xenon in foglights?

If xenon light sources were installed in the headlights, it is advisable to put them in the PTF as well. This will not spoil the aesthetic appearance of the machine.

Installation and Wiring Precautions

The nuances that must be observed when installing gas discharge devices in foglights:

  1. If in the process of performing the task damage to the light sources appeared, it is necessary to stop work. This also applies to wiring defects, as well as ignition units.
  2. Before performing the task, the car owner must wash their hands, dry them and degrease them. Otherwise, the bulbs may be damaged and electric shock may result.
  3. When connected, you can not look at light sources for a long time without glasses.
  4. The joints are completely insulated with heat shrink tubing or electrical tape. Otherwise, moisture may enter the wiring, and this will lead to a short circuit or fire.
  5. It is recommended to degrease the bulbs of light sources before mounting.

Algorithm for installing xenon lamps

In PTF, it is necessary to install devices designed for 4300K or 5000K, this option is more effective in fog and when driving on wet roads:

  1. Fog lights are usually located under the head optics. Therefore, their installation may require the dismantling of the bumper. Sometimes it is enough to unscrew the screws that fix the front wheel arches.
  2. After access to the rear of the PTF is gained, the optics are disconnected from the power circuit. Dismantling of old light sources and installation of new, gas-discharge ones.
  3. High-quality fixation of devices is performed. During the ride, they can be affected by vibrations, so the bulbs must be securely fastened. Otherwise, it will cause them to break.
  4. Ignition blocks are installed. The best option would be to place them in the engine compartment or under the front bumper. You need to find free space for installation. It is recommended to select a sheltered location where the unit will not be exposed to moisture and harsh environment. Fixing devices is carried out by means of clamps or adhesive tape. If special fasteners are included in the package, then they are used.

Using the example of Lada Priora, user Sergey M showed the procedure for installing xenon light sources in fog lights.

Instructions for connecting xenon

Gas-discharge lamps in PTF will be connected in the same way as in the case of head lighting. The light sources are connected by means of conductors to the power supply of the fog lamp circuit, and then to the ignition units.

Rules for setting xenon headlights

The procedure for adjusting the luminous flux is as follows:

  1. The vehicle is placed in front of the wall, perpendicular to it. It could be a garage or another building. The distance between the surface and the bumper will be minimal.
  2. Using a felt-tip pen or chalk, the central part of each of the lighting fixtures is marked on the wall. The center of the car is also marked. It is important that the marks are perpendicular to the bottom of the wall.
  3. Then the car rolls back about 7-8 meters.
  4. The optics are turned on. A horizontal straight line is drawn through the center of the illumination beam; chalk is used for this.
  5. Then another cut is made. It runs parallel to the previous one, only 7.62 cm below it.
  6. After that, the head lighting of the machine is activated. Using the adjusting screws, the lighting flow is adjusted. it is necessary to choose the best position of the light beam. Ideally, its upper part will be in contact with the lower horizontal segment.

How to replace xenon lamps with halogen ones?

The disadvantages associated with the operation of xenon lead to the fact that many car owners decide to change gas discharge lamps to ordinary ones. There are nuances in this process, especially if the light sources were installed regularly.

Do-it-yourself lamp replacement procedure

Replacement is carried out after preparing a wrench and a screwdriver, sometimes electrical tape is required:

  1. The engine compartment opens, the negative clamp is disconnected from the battery.
  2. Installed lighting sources are disconnected from the power circuit. The protective elements are dismantled, under which the screws are located. They attach the optics to the car body, so they must be unscrewed, but not completely, but simply loosened.
  3. The headlights are dismantled. They can be additionally fixed with latches. When performing the task, it is important not to break the mount. After that, the lighting device is dismantled from the seat.
  4. The ignition blocks of gas-discharge light bulbs are being removed; for this, the fastening on the modules is unscrewed.
  5. The power line is being laid from the control unit, the device is mounted next to the steering wheel. If halogen bulbs were installed in cars, then it is not necessary to change the electrical circuits. But in the case of with, laying of new cables will be required. This task is done carefully so as not to damage the conductors.
  6. Optical devices are being installed, they are connected to electrical circuits. Then the lighting flow is adjusted.

The channel "MazdaGarage" in its video on the example of the Xedos model showed how to dismantle xenon light sources from the headlights.

What to do if xenon headlights stop working?

In the event that xenon bulbs have ceased to function, the reasons may be as follows:

  • damage to the contact on the connector for connecting to the power circuit;
  • wire break;
  • failure of the light source, the lamps cannot be restored;
  • failure of the control module.

Why does the ignition block break?

Reasons for the failure of the ignition device:

  1. Lack of tightness on the module case, which leads to the ingress of dirt and moisture into the unit. The analysis of the device and the diagnosis of its internal component will allow you to determine the problem. If dirt or water gets into the module, the bulbs will not light or will blink when turned on.
  2. negative impact of corrosion. The soldering points of electronic components can oxidize, causing the components to fall out of the solder. The problem is related to assembly errors or regular exposure to moisture.
  3. The pulse signal from the controller has disappeared. There may be problems with transistor elements, a multiplier or transformer device.

How to repair the xenon ignition unit yourself?

The module is repaired as follows:

  1. Diagnostics of all electrical circuits is carried out for breakage or leakage. This refers to the wires that go to the module. The problem may be a pinched or damaged power line.
  2. The device is treated with an alcohol solution, this will remove rust and traces of condensate. Be careful not to damage the board. The sealant is removed from the back of the circuit and the contact elements are re-soldered with a soldering iron. Everything needs to be soldered, since leaky parts are difficult to visually determine.
  3. An opened ignition device is diagnosed on something that does not pass voltage. When diagnosing, there are no lighting parts nearby. The test is performed in the state with the device connected to a light source. The voltage value of the multiplier element is 35 kV, so if the unit does not turn on, then it does not move until it is completely turned off.
  4. The next step will be to perform diagnostics of transistor elements, there are a total of four on the board. A multimeter is used to check. If testing showed a device with a breakdown, it is soldered again. It is recommended to install 4N60 parts.
  5. Using a tester, it is not always possible to determine an element with a breakdown. It may be necessary to remove each transistor, then the ignition device is activated. You can turn it on for a short time, for a couple of seconds.
  6. If the transistor elements are intact, the resistor devices are tested. The burnt part is replaced with a new one.

This tool after hardening - the most solid. If the transient device needs to be replaced in the future, it will be problematic to open the module.

Xenon is an inert gas that glows brightly when it comes into contact with an electric current. Xenon lamps are much better than halogen lamps, as they have a number of advantages. They emit a light very similar to daylight, so they do not tire the driver's eyes so much on long trips, even if you install xenon in the high beam. Also, xenon lamps significantly reduce the load on the car's generator and do not break during shaking. Self-installation of xenon is quite easy and any car owner can handle it.

Types of xenon

From a parameter such as temperature, it depends on what brightness and color shade the lamp will be. The color range of xenon varies from yellow to purple. Temperature is measured in degrees Kelvin. More saturated colors are rarely used by motorists, most often white xenon is installed, it looks more like daylight. The yellow color of the headlights will be at a mark of 4050 K. And the white color is equal to a value of 5000 K. A blue tint is obtained at 6000 K, and purple at 18000 K.

Also, xenon lamps come in different sizes. To choose the right lamp for the size you need for the headlight, you should take the old one for comparison.
The durability of the lighting elements is quite high, so xenon lamps will be replaced very rarely.

Also, every motorist needs to know that pseudoxenon is on sale. It has nothing to do with xenon lamps. These are conventional halogen bulbs tinted blue with higher wattage. So when buying xenon you need to be very careful.

Xenon installation

After the appropriate kit has been purchased in the store, you can proceed to the beginning of the installation of xenon. It is very simple to do this with your own hands, without resorting to the help of craftsmen. There are two different sets for low beam and high beam. The standard kit for installing xenon comes with two lamps, two ignition units and wires. Connecting xenon without an ignition unit is impossible, only it can supply the required voltage, namely 25,000 V. But this voltage indicator is only necessary for ignition, after that it will be enough to support only 80 V for the normal operation of the lamps.

Now let's move on to the installation. First you need to lift the hood and unscrew the headlights. After that, we take out the old lamps. They can be mounted on a spring, which can be seen in certain types of cars. This means that new lamps should also be installed on this spring. The main thing is to never touch it with your hands before mounting xenon lamps. If it has not already come out without touching, then the surface should be degreased with alcohol. Further, the installation must be carried out according to the scheme.

The xenon connection diagram clearly shows the correct course of action. It is impossible to make a mistake in it, it is very simple.

1. Installing a xenon lamp. If the base does not fit, then you can use special adapters, they sometimes come in a xenon kit. If it's not included in the set, you'll have to buy it separately.

2. After installation, we press the lamp with an elastic band.

3. Through the rubber plug, lead the wires to the ignition unit. It will have to be installed near the headlights, because the wires are not very long. But the chosen place must be dry, otherwise the unit will stop functioning. It can be attached to the hood with tape. To keep the ignition unit from moisture, you can also wrap it with insulating tape.

4. Then we attach the wires coming from the xenon lamp to the regular low or high beam connector. Engaging in the installation of xenon in the high beam and in the dipped beam are two different operations that involve the purchase of two sets. But the installation scheme will be the same. You can even additionally wrap all the wires with insulating tape for greater reliability.

All is ready! Now you can actually test the positive properties of xenon lamps and enjoy a wonderful driving experience.

Bixenon

In order not to install two different sets of xenon for low beam and high beam, you can simply buy and connect bi-xenon.
Bi-xenon lamps have the same principle of working with an inert gas, only they are also equipped with an additional electromagnet. It is he who allows you to switch the headlights to low and high beams.

Installing bi-xenon has some nuances. Let's take a closer look at the connection process.

1. The wires from the bi-xenon lamps are connected to the ignition unit.

2. We connect the wires of the controller to the same block. He is engaged in voltage stabilization in all wiring.

3. The bi-xenon lamp has an additional wire responsible for the electromagnet. It should also be connected to the controller.

4. The controller is connected to the battery.

xenon fog lights

Of course, the best option for fog lights is xenon. It will do the job perfectly and is also much better than conventional lamps. They will illuminate the road, not flying drops towards the car.

During installation, you must adhere to the following steps:

  • Remove bumper
  • Unplugging headlights
  • Connecting new lamps
  • We connect xenon lamps to the ignition and power unit
  • We place ignition blocks
  • Checking the fog lights

Safety rules when connecting xenon

How to install xenon correctly has already been described earlier, but not a word was said about security measures. It should be corrected.

Here are the basic safety rules:

  • In case of breakage of parts of the xenon kit, immediately stop the installation
  • Do not work with wet hands
  • It is forbidden to look at burning xenon lamps for a long time without tinted glasses.
  • Electrical wires must be insulated
  • Headlight adjustment must be done with a special tool.

Helpful advice: You also need to know that the color shade of xenon lamps may vary slightly from each other. This is normal for xenon.

Advantages of xenon lamps

It is better to buy branded xenon kits, you should not save on improving your own car. We list the main advantages of good xenon.

Installation of xenon and biksenon.

It's 2017 outside, and xenon lamps for almost a quarter of a century they have been holding leadership in the automotive industry as light sources that have no equal in terms of brightness / price / ease of replacement. LEDs have been stepping on their heels for several years, and already now there are bright LEDs in the near far or PTF however, they are still much more expensive.

Everyone knows about the advantages of xenon lamps over any of the existing ones, which is why you are reading this article :)

Xenon lamps shine brighter than incandescent lamps, halogen lamps , LED lamps;

The xenon lamp heats up significantly less than an incandescent lamp or LEDs;

A xenon lamp consumes almost 50% less electricity than a halogen lamp;

Xenon light 3000K and 4300K more than others corresponds to daylight, which means that it illuminates the road and the roadside better than others, dazzles others less and is perfect for bad weather conditions (snowfall, rain, hail, fog);

A xenon lamp is much more reliable due to the absence of a tungsten filament, namely, they break at halogen lamps from constant temperature changes and shaking;

The average life of a xenon lamp is 3000 hours, which is about 2-4 years of operation with runs of about 20-30 thousand km. in year;

Incandescent and halogen lamps are NOT WARRANTY... Since the halogen is sensitive to shaking, it is believed that the client can go beyond the threshold of the store, drop the lamp and come to demand its replacement. If there was a guarantee for halogen lamps, then the fact of shaking cannot be proved or disproved, therefore, the lamp would have to be changed constantly, and now, according to the established rules, the client has the right to check such an autolamp before buying and that's it.For xenon lamps a guarantee from 6 to 24 months!

How tight are xenon lamps and ignition units

How does a xenon lamp work and how does it work

For proper connection and installation of xenon, you yourself need to know how such a lamp works. A glass quartz flask is mounted on a metal, plastic or ceramic base. Metal wires are built into the top and bottom inside the flask - they are called electrodes. They are soldered inside the lamp, but there is no direct contact. Between them there is a distance of about 4-7mm. Almost the entire electrode is covered from above with a thin ceramic tube that performs protective functions. In the very center of the flask there is a spherical cavity filled with an inert gas xenon (XE 54, which was discovered already in 1898 by W. Ramsay and M. Travers). What does a good aftermarket xenon lamp look like?

In order for xenon to begin to emit light, it is necessary to apply an electric current through it with a voltage 25-30 thousand volts. Such a significant voltage is needed only in the first fraction of a second for the formation of an "arc" inside the glass cavity with xenon. Further, the inert gas itself enters into action and begins to glow, increasing the brightness. At the same time, the voltage between the ignition unit and the lamp drops and after 1 minute the operating voltage is about 80 volts. This is enough to keep the xenon lamp working. The arc of discharge that occurs in the first instant in a xenon lamp and ignites the xenon

Where 12-24 volts passes, the wires can be cut and connected

with the help of electrical tape, heat shrink, improvised means.

Where the voltage reaches 30 thousand volts, it is impossible to cut wires.

Will pierce the spark to the nearest metal object

All xenon lamps, in the name of which there is the Latin letter "H", were created, to replace a similar halogen lamp. Here is a list of all existing automotive lamps used in headlights for 2015: H1, H4, H6, H7, H8, H9, H10, H11, H13, H15, H16, H27 / 881 (L-shaped), H27 / 880 (straight), HB3/9005, HB4/9006, HB5/9004/9007, 9012, PSX24, PSX26. In nature, there are other, very rare lamps, which make no sense to list.

Various types of xenon lamps with plastic or metal

base and ceramic glass

Glow color halogen lamps can be changed in one single way - paint the flask in any color. Example: if we know that the standard light from an incandescent filament in a halogen lamp is yellowish, then by painting the lamp blue we will achieve a simple white glow. If we want to get the blue color of a halogen lamp, then the flask must be painted over with 10 layers of blue paint. The color will turn out bluish, but the power will be scanty due to the thickness of the paint, which will take precious lumens.

White color scale in Kelvin

At xenon lamps there are many shades. Kelvin is a unit of measure for the hue of WHITE. It is believed that both yellowish and bluish xenon color are all shades of white. Xenon allegedly 30,000 Kelvin or 20,000 Kelvin is just a trick, thanks to which people start to get confused. We need to be clear: lamps with xenon from 3000K to 12000K are all shades of white (from yellowish to bluish), and in addition there is xenon green green, purple purple, pink pink and "deep blue" deep blue.

How xenon lamps of different colors should really shine

Outside, xenon looks prettier, which stands out from the crowd - blue , blue, violet. Also yellow xenon perfectly illuminates the road in bad weather.

We have been selecting all these photos and videos for weeks on the Internet in order to try to convey the color of xenon lamps that you get by purchasing lamps of a certain color temperature from us.

Both photo and video extremely difficult to remove a bright xenon lamp, more precisely, it is difficult to remove so as to show the natural color.

Here is a video that renders the shades of xenon, but it does not convey the brightness.

The order is: 3000K - 4300K - 5000K - 6000K - deep blue (deep blue color) - pink.

Yellow xenon 3000K shining like this

Before describing the process of connecting and installing xenon, a few words must be said about reliability, companies and guarantees:

There are two categories of xenon: AC And DC. In school, we were taught that these letters mean variable and constant. We know that 12 volts is direct current, which means we can talk about the current that the ignition unit converts. Therefore, you can test our theory by trying to connect a xenon lamp to two different ignition units, first in the way the plugs are located, and then by changing the polarity.

AC ignition unit

We have carried out such an experiment. The result is this: with the AC ignition unit, the xenon lamp lit up only when it was connected in the usual way. With a DC ignition unit, the lamp lights up both when you change the polarity. The conclusion is simple: we do not understand what the Chinese mean when they refer to some xenon equipment as DC, another AC. What we know for sure is that XENON AC is high-quality xenon, XENON DC is less high-quality xenon. For DC, the color of the lamp can be very different from the declared temperature, the service life is about 3 times less than AC xenon.

DC ignition unit

AC is a quality xenon with a guarantee, DC is the cheapest low quality xenon, usually without a guarantee or no more than 1 month. All xenon light firms that have been sold for a long time Dixel, Xenite, Optima, MTF- it's all reliable xenon AC.

Firms Bosch, Hella, Osram, Philips DO NOT MANUFACTURE XENON LAMPS AND XENON IGNITION UNITS DESIGNED TO BE INSTALLED IN HEADLIGHTS WHERE HALOGEN LAMPS WERE BEFORE. They only produce regular xenon lamps. D1s, D1r, D2s, D2r, D3s, D3r, D4s, D4r, D5, D8 and ignition units for the same lamps.

Fake Philips

There are thousands of diagrams on the Internet on how to connect xenon, they are all correct, but almost all are incomprehensible to a person who has never done this, so we present the most primitive photo of how to connect a regular xenon kit (not "bi", not lenses). I hope everything is very clear: first, we inserted a thick power plug into the ignition unit (two metal terminals remained at the end), then we connected two plugs coming from the lamp and 2 plugs coming out of the ignition unit. Everything, the connection took place :)

Further, in order for xenon to work, it is enough to apply 12 volts to it. You can either connect the terminals to the battery directly (to check the operation), or insert the terminals into the black plug where the car supplies power when you turn on the low beam.

Here is another diagram of how to connect xenon with your own hands, it shows a footnote that the power wire can be one-piece, or it can be two-part.

It often happens that the current that is supplied from the vehicle to the chip (and then directly to the ignition unit and to the xenon lamp) does not have enough voltage or current for normal xenon operation. In this case, you can solve the problem by connecting xenon "from the battery". Need special wiring or you can use any bi-xenon wiring.

With connection diagram bi-xenon need to look even more closely. There is a switch from low beam to high beam. Most sellers and manufacturers put in a bi-xenon kit special long cable , which combines power supply from the battery and signal supply from ONE chip. All wiring is up to 2.5 meters long, so it is convenient to pull it both in motorcycle scooters and in large vans.

One single diagram that clearly and simply shows real bi-xenon wiring and real connection.

Also, you can connect any bi-xenon lamp NOT using complex long battery-powered wiring, but directly to the power supply from the "chips" .

We pass from connecting xenon to installation.

Here is everything that should be in the xenon kit shown in the photo below: 2 xenon lamps, 2 xenon ignition units, power wires(depending on the type of lamp, the power wires look different).

Sometimes you need to completely or partially remove the front bumper to remove the headlight and get to the lamps.

It is up to you to dismantle the headlight or not, but usually, if the work is done on your own on the removed headlight in a comfortable home environment, the result is excellent.

We take out the old regular regular halogen lamp

Install xenon lamp in the headlight and fasten

In some cars, a special plastic is required to fix the xenon lamp in the headlight. adapter - adapter

Use the rubber band that comes with almost any xenon lamp to ensure tightness

Next, you need to choose a safe place and fix ignition unit. Remember that modern xenon ignition blocks are not afraid of temperature changes, shaking, humidity or water (you can put them in an aquarium and they will work), the blocks just need to be securely fastened under the hood of the car.

Most often double sided tape is used.

You can also use clamps

Much less often, people "hole" the metal and screw the ignition blocks onto self-tapping screws

Then we connect the power wires to the "chip" of the regular connector of the car, where + and - are supplied for a conventional lamp

Wires can be additionally fixed with electrical tape

Checking the operation of new xenon lamps

Installing xenon in the main beam is carried out in exactly the same way as in the dipped beam.

For some cars, the headlights are designed in such a way that one lamp is responsible for the low beam, the other for the high beam, and for some cars one lamp can work in two modes - low beam and high beam (there are 2 filaments in such a lamp). If the optics in your car are arranged as described in the second option, then you need to install a bi-xenon kit so that both the dipped and main beam of xenon are preserved.

Self-installation and connection of bi-xenon differs from the installation of xenon, only if you decide to use special long wiring with relay and battery power . It is this installation option that we will consider below. Because if you have direct wiring without battery power, then connecting and installing bi-xenon will exactly repeat the installation of simple xenon, and we discussed this process above.

A complete set of bi-xenon H4 looks like this: 2 ignition units, 2 bi-xenon lamps , one bi-xenon wiring with a relay for 2 lamps.

Bi-xenon lamps look like this. We see that they differ from xenon lamps in their longer length and the presence of a thickening on the back side. Behind is an electromagnet, which, when a "high beam" signal is applied, pulls the lamp back by about 1 cm, thus, the position of the light source relative to the headlight reflector is shifted and the light begins to creep higher.

For the H4 lamp, the metal cap that is located on top of the lamp is removed if the headlight already has such a cap. All 3 types of bi-xenon lamps have removable bases. Thus, it is possible to remove the lamp from the headlight not entirely, but only the main lamp with the bulb, while the part of the lamp fixed in the headlight remains inside.

The bi-xenon connection diagram is a little higher.

The procedure for installing bi-xenon:

Remove the standard lamps from the headlights, install and fix the bi-xenon lamps in the headlight, thread three wires through the headlight cover outward (+ and - from the lamp and the near / far switch wire)

Unwind a long bi-xenon wiring, connect + to the battery terminal, think about how to route it more compactly and safely and secure it under the hood

Connect the H4 signal chip to the chip in the bi-xenon wiring and fix the connection with electrical tape. Wrap the second, unused chip with electrical tape

Fix two negative terminals near the headlights and connect the thick power plugs of the wiring to the ignition units

After it became clear that the wiring reaches all parts of the bi-xenon, you need to think about how and where to fix the ignition blocks, they usually use double-sided tape and clamps

Collect everything that was disassembled and check if everything works.

Bi-xenon in Daewoo Matiz shines something like this

Therefore, in order not to get in the eye somewhere on the track and not become the culprit of an accident, we strongly recommend installing H4 lamps instead of H4 lamps on the car. H13 and HB5/9004/9007 not bi-xenon, but a set of bi-xenon lenses, which perfectly focuses the light flux, so you, as a driver, see the road better and don’t blind everyone right and left :)

This is what Matiz looks like with installed bi-xenon lenses

So the neighbor shines. Pay attention to the clear light-shadow border and the focus of the light flux.

So the distant one shines with bi lenses.

A complete kit for installing bi-xenon lenses should include:

Bi-xenon lens module 2pcs.

Wiring for connecting lenses (it can be long with a relay for 2 lamps, but it can be straight. Accordingly, you need 2 straight lines, and if with a relay, then one for 2 lenses)

2 sets of metal rings (adapters) for fixing the lens in the headlight so that it does not spin, 1-2 rubber bands

You also need to separately acquire fresh high-quality sealant, preferably a building hair dryer to heat the headlight around the perimeter, plastic or metal plates for easy parsing of the headlight.

So, the process of installing bi-xenon lenses.

1. It is necessary to dismantle the headlights. Disassemble the headlight only in clean conditions! We heat the headlight around the perimeter so that the glass of the headlight is detached from the body.

Someone uses improvised means:))))))))))))))))))))))))

We fix the lenses in the headlight.

So I decided to write a short article about do-it-yourself xenon installation. In principle, there is nothing complicated in this and no super knowledge of an electrician is required in this. Everything is done easily and simply. But still, I think this article will be useful to someone.!

Some information about the origin of xenon:

The short arc xenon lamp was invented in the 1940s in Germany and introduced in 1951 by Osram. The lamp found wide application in film projectors, from where it replaced mainly carbon arc lamps. The lamp gives a bright white light, close to the daylight spectrum, but has a rather low efficiency. To date, almost all film and digital film projectors use xenon lamps with power from 900 W to 12 kW. Lamps in IMAX projectors can reach up to 15 kW in a single lamp.

Principle of operation:

In a xenon lamp, the main stream of light is emitted by the plasma near the cathode. The luminous region has the shape of a cone, and the brightness of its glow decreases exponentially as it moves away from the cathode. The spectrum of a xenon lamp is approximately uniform throughout the visible light region, close to daylight. In high pressure lamps there may be several peaks near the infrared range, approximately 850-900 nm, which can account for up to 10% of the total radiation in terms of power.

There are also mercury-xenon lamps, in which, in addition to xenon, mercury vapor is present in the bulb. They have luminous areas both near the cathode and near the anode. They emit a bluish-white light with a strong ultraviolet output, which allows them to be used for physiotherapeutic purposes, sterilization and ozonation.

Due to the small size of the luminous area, xenon lamps can be used as a point source of light, allowing for fairly accurate focusing, and a good spectrum leads to widespread use in film and photography. Xenon lamps are also used in environmental chambers, which simulate solar radiation to test materials for lightfastness. www.wikipedia.org

And so let's move on to installing xenon on a car.

I apologize for the quality of the photos, there is no good camera and the weather conditions were bad. And so, the VAZ 2107 car will serve as an example for us. There is practically no difference, whether it is a foreign car or a domestic car. The principle is the same. The differences are only in the difficulty of accessing the headlight, mounting, and connecting contacts. Connecting chips may differ on different cars. In general, having understood a little, I think this installation will not be difficult for you.

We will need:

1. Xenon kit (lamps, ignition units)

2. Drill and reamer of a certain diameter, depending on the situation.

3. And the most important desire.

We remove the protective plastic cover from the headlight and drill a hole in it through which the wires from the lamp to the ignition units will pass. This may not be necessary, it all depends on the design of the headlight and access to the connecting wires. Look at the situation, how to do better.

Do not forget that in this hole you will need to bring out the power chip coming from the headlight. To do this, I cut the rubber plug from the edge to the center and passed the wires. You can do it differently, just drill another hole. (on the VAZ 2107 the chip is not small, so the hole will be large) refused this option.

We remove the old halogen lamps and carefully insert the new ones. Close the protective cover, correct the wires, they can interfere with installation.

And just connect the power and the lamp, everything is simple. The type and size of the chips can differ everywhere, depending on the car and the type of xenon, in general, the principle is the same. The end result should be something like this.

I will not talk about fastening the blocks, see for yourself according to the situation. But be sure to place them in a place inaccessible to water and moisture. If there is no space where they can be installed, there is an option to make a mount from a plate of not thick metal and screw it in an accessible place.

Consider how to install xenon lamps so as not to blind drivers of oncoming cars. Even a novice driver can install xenon correctly with his own hands, but it is important to understand the specifics of gas discharge lamps.

How not to lose your rights

There is no direct ban on the use of xenon lamps, but for unauthorized installation of a driver, they can be deprived of their rights for a period of six months to a year. Traffic police officers refer to Art. 12.5 part 3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, which establishes such a penalty if the car is equipped with lighting devices, the mode and color of the glow of which do not correspond to the established tolerances for the operation of the vehicle. Also, the reason for the preventive measure is the list of malfunctions of external lighting devices, in which further operation of the vehicle is prohibited. The ban takes effect in the following cases:

  • non-compliance of the luminous flux adjustment with the requirements of GOST;
  • diffusers and lamps do not match the type of light fixture;
  • discrepancy between the operating modes and the type of lamps provided by the manufacturer of the vehicle for the design of lighting devices.

To reduce the risk of deprivation of a VU, the following conditions must be met:

  • the reflector and glass of the headlight must be designed for the installation of xenon lamps;
  • the presence of an auto-corrector that regulates the light beam depending on the position of the car body;
  • headlights must be equipped with a washer.

Consider how to install gas discharge lamps so as not to interfere with oncoming traffic and rely on the loyalty of traffic police officers. For legalization, you need to obtain a permit for conversion, and then legalize the changes made to the design of the vehicle.

headlight markings

The possibility of installing xenon lamps is determined by the lighting manufacturer. You can find out the tolerances by decoding the marking.

  • DC / DR - headlights with separate lamps for low and high range. Both are available with xenon lamps.
  • DCR - dual-mode headlight (one bulb). The installation of a gas discharge lamp is permissible.
  • DC / HR - xenon can only be installed for low beam headlights.
  • HC/HR or HCR are halogen lamps only.
  • CR - headlights with incandescent lamps.

Marking is applied directly to the glass or headlight housing.

Set of regular xenon

Many car models are regularly equipped with xenon only in expensive trim levels. Therefore, for installation, it is enough to buy headlights, lamps and a device for automatically adjusting the light beam. Since the cost of these parts is rather big, you can build a headlight washer system with your own hands.

  • You will need a used windshield washer reservoir, a suitable motor, tubes.
  • Washer nozzles (suitable from any car) are mounted in the bumper, the device is powered through a fuse. Power management must be brought to a separate button in the cabin. It can be connected to a regular washer, then the headlights will be washed along with the windshield. But in this case, the washer consumption will increase significantly.

After installing the kit, the headlights must be adjusted in a certified center (possible at a dealer station). It is better to keep a copy of the adjustment work order in the car at all times.

In some cars, regular xenon is not equipped with a washer and auto-corrector. The sale and operation of such vehicles is permitted by the provisions of UN EEC Rules No. 48. The essence of the decree is that dipped-beam headlamps with a light source or an LED module producing (and) a nominal luminous flux of more than 2000 lumens must be equipped with a washer and an automatic corrector. Therefore, you can install xenon in the dipped beam using standard bulbs and replacing only the necessary elements.

Xenon headlight conversion

If the cost of a standard kit seems too unreasonable to you, you can assemble xenon from separate components. On cars in which the same light bulb is responsible for the near and far illumination of the headlights, you should install. Otherwise, you can use D2S xenon lamps for high beam and D2R for low beam. At the moment, gas discharge lamps can be found on sale even for the usual H series, many adapters are available. So with the installation of the lamps themselves, problems should not arise.

Even if the headlights are equipped with halogen light lenses, before installing xenon lamps in your car, the lenses must be replaced with a kit specifically designed for a gas discharge light source. This is explained by the difference in the design of the "curtain", switching lighting modes. So, what you need to switch from halogens to gas discharge lamps:

Autocorrect

  • suitable lenses;
  • ignition unit and fasteners to it;
  • connectors for connection, if necessary, also adapters.

The best solution in this case is to buy a ready-made, certified kit (it is advisable to keep a copy of the document in the car). The auto-corrector of the light beam will have to be purchased separately. If your car already has an electric adjustment drive, you can purchase a universal auto-corrector without servos. Motors, if necessary, can also be purchased separately.

  • The ignition unit and auto-corrector must be installed in a clean, moisture-proof location. Make sure they are securely fastened. The light control module must be set strictly according to the level.
  • To disassemble the headlight and install the lenses, you can heat the sealant with a hairdryer. Then carefully separate the glass with a knife.
  • Never touch xenon lamps. In order for them to serve for a long time, you should only hold on to the base itself.
  • Before assembly, make sure that there are no fingerprints or other contaminants on the inside of the glass and on the lens.

If you are installing, make sure you understand the control logic of those electrical devices of the car that will be changed. In order to make the installation reliable, as well as to eliminate the risk of fire, all connections must be well insulated.

Why is everyone so serious

A standard do-it-yourself xenon installation takes no more than half an hour. What the wrong installation approach looks like:

What is the "salt", you ask? Xenon, installed in headlights not intended for this, will blind oncoming drivers. It's all about the nature of the source that generates the light flux. The shorter emission wavelength of gas discharge lamps, as well as the large dimensions of the spark charge, provoke the dispersion of the light flux when used with reflectors for halogen lamps. This explains the need to install a converging lens or a special reflector.

The situation is further aggravated by the installation of xenon headlights with a conventional reflector and corrugated headlight glass. Unfortunately, many drivers ignore not only the legal provisions, but also the norms of common sense. Do-it-yourself xenon installation in conventional headlights should be accompanied by grinding the corrugation. For this, a special polishing nozzle and abrasives of gradation from P60 to P2000 are used. The final processing takes place with coarse abrasive and fine-grained polishing paste. You can also use fluoropol or based on cerium oxide.
