Skoda Roomster increased ground clearance. Skoda Roomster: technical specifications. Note to future car owners

Power units Skoda Roomster

The car sold on the Russian market is equipped with three 4-cylinder gasoline engines. It is clear that no one is going to drive such a car, so engine thrust when fully loaded (especially in the lower speed range) is much more important.

The weakest of this trio has a volume of 1.4 liters, is equipped with an injector, and develops 86 hp. With. power and produces 132 Nm of torque (at 3800 rpm). Such a motor, with its acceleration to hundreds in 13 seconds, is suitable only for leisurely, calm drivers who rarely drive with a full load. The engine's appetite is moderate - about 6 liters of gasoline per 100 km in the combined cycle.

Next come two engines of different volume, but equal in power. This is a 1.2-liter turbocharged unit (TSI) with direct fuel injection. He is the fastest of the trio (11 seconds to a hundred). Its power is 105 “horses”, and the maximum torque is 175 Nm and, most importantly, thanks to the turbine it is available already in the lower speed range. Fuel consumption is quite acceptable - 5.7 l/100 km.

In addition, a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated version is also available to car dealership customers. This is a kind of average option with a power of 105 “horses” and a thrust of 153 Nm of torque (at 3800 rpm). Gasoline consumption fluctuates around 7 liters per 100 km (combined cycle).

Model suspension and steering

The chassis is made according to a time-tested design. A regular McPherson is installed at the front, and a torsion beam at the rear. Naturally, this arrangement loses some controllability and comfort compared to a “multi-link”, but it is stronger and cheaper to maintain, and this is the main priority of the Skoda Roomster. Technical characteristics in this case are not the main thing.

Ventilated disc brakes at the front, coupled with drum brakes at the rear, ensure confident deceleration.

Handling can be described as calm, and the electro-hydraulic power steering allows you not to lose touch with the car.

Transmission types and drive

One of 3 possible gearboxes can be installed on the car. This can be a regular 5-speed manual transmission, available for all modifications, a 6-speed torque converter (for a 1.6-liter engine) and a 7-range preselective transmission (DSG) for a 1.2TSI engine.

All-wheel drive is not provided for the car - only front-wheel drive is available.

General information about the car

The Roomster (Skoda) car has come a long way from the day of its presentation in 2003 to the start of serial production in 2006.

It took three years to adjust the assembly technologies, and these measures were fully justified - the quality increased significantly. There was simply no other way, since the platform of the new model consisted of two parts: the front and part of the body were borrowed from the “Roomster” from Octavia, and the rear part went to it. Such an arrangement was quite a responsible process, so it required a jewelry joining of two load-bearing elements. The Octavia's distance between the rear wheels is 7 centimeters greater than that of the Fabia's front wheels, and the creators of the Roomster model made the best use of this difference, providing the new product with additional stability when cornering. The advantage of the double platform was that it was possible to adjust the frame to the new modernized body, vary the length and height of the base, which in turn made it possible to update the exterior.

Mass production

In March 2006, the Skoda Roomster, the photo of which is presented in the article, was shown for the second time at the motor show, this time in Geneva, and a month later its serial production began. speaks about its purpose: room - a cozy room and ster - a passenger car. With such data, the model corresponds to the family car category, however, there are some features due to which the Roomster can be considered an ultra-modern stylish car, suitable not only for country walks. If necessary, the car can be used to transport goods, and in certain conditions, the Roomster can well play the role of a luxury car, which, however, is not surprising, because its exterior is quite exclusive.

Exterior

First of all, the Skoda Roomster, reviews of which speak specifically about the originality of the body design, is distinguished by a distinctly sporty appearance. The exterior is decorated in an ultra-modern style, with a certain amount of futurism. Swift contours, glass with a special coating that protects against ultraviolet radiation, wide windows and a windshield as part of the body - all this creates the impression of integrity and completeness of the model. There is something elusively aviation-like in the appearance of the car, as if the Roomster is about to take off. The contours of the lower and upper parts of the car are connected by a conventional line running along the lower edge of the rear side windows, the longitudinal projections of the doors and the ribs of the front wings. The front end in the upper part is a complete horizontal unit that combines the headlights.

Lighting engineering

The headlights are visually one piece with the chrome-plated upper trim of the radiator grille. Light elements of the front lights of the "Roomster Skoda", reviews of the electrical equipment of which are the most positive, combined. The projector-type headlights built into the light block contain H7 halogens, and optical xenons are located nearby, the light in which passes through special lenses. The efficiency of road lighting is high. In addition, the Roomster headlights are equipped with a special rotating device that allows you to focus the light beam with an offset of up to 15 degrees. This option is useful when the vehicle is moving slowly in difficult conditions.

Compact round-shaped foglights are integrated, which can also be rotated when the car enters a turn, and return to their place after the steering wheel is aligned. The rear lights of the "Roomster" are elongated vertically, the brake lights are located in the lower part, the turn signals occupy the upper segment, and white reverse lights are mounted in the middle. The interior lighting is also exclusive: triple neon lights on the ceiling and dim lighting on the instrument panel.

Purpose

The Skoda Roomster, whose performance characteristics are quite controversial, is considered by some owners to be an ideal family car with a spacious and comfortable interior. Others prefer to use the car for dynamic driving, both in the city and on the highway, stopping only to fill the fuel tank.

Salon

The interior of the car is rationally equipped, the driver's seat is equipped with all the necessary devices for effective control. The driver's seat is adjustable in height, the forward-backward movement is provided by an extended slide, so a person of any height and build can sit behind the wheel. universal, the back is made in the form of a slightly curved module with side supports. The same seat is located to the right of the driver's seat. The front seats are designed for long journeys; their shape has a relaxing effect on both the driver and the passenger. Additional comfort is provided by the Climatronic stratified air conditioning system.

Van or minivan

Some signs of a minivan can be seen in the interior of the Skoda Roomster; reviews from owners on this matter are the most positive. First of all, buyers like the high ceiling (1.6 meters to the highest point). Along the perimeter of the cabin there are holders for bottles, cups, glasses and other containers. The glove compartment, built into the front panel, is divided into two sections, equipped with lighting and ventilation. The designers' concern for the convenience of passengers is evident throughout.

The Skoda Roomster interior is decorated with high-quality expensive materials based on natural ingredients. Velor seat upholstery is combined with genuine leather, inactive plastic is used.

Comfort level

The Skoda Roomster salon is most spacious in the rear, the seats can be transformed in several combinations, the backrests can be stacked, connected to each other, or, conversely, placed at a distance from each other - it all depends on the chosen scheme for arranging the interior space at the moment. The car uses a VarioFlex multi-arrangement rear seat system. Thanks to it, the volume of luggage space can be increased to 1780 liters.

Engine

The Skoda Roomster power plant includes three petrol engine options and two diesel engines. The Czech concern Skoda traditionally offers several engines to choose from. The base engine, which is installed on all Roomsters coming off the assembly line, is a petrol economy with a capacity of 64 hp. With. and a volume of 1.2 liters. A buyer who wants a more powerful car can order a 1.4 or 1.6 liter engine with a power of 86 and 105 hp. With. respectively. Those who prefer diesel engines are offered TDI PD 1.4 or TDI PD 1.9 - 80 and 110 liters. With.

When installing a more powerful engine, the Skoda Roomster is equipped with an automatic transmission. When installing the base engine, a 5-speed manual transmission is installed on the car.

"Roomster" is the front suspension of the Fabia model and the rear suspension of the Octavia, without changes. Both of them are proven, with good characteristics, providing the new car with sufficient maneuverability and a smooth ride.

Regretting missed opportunities is, of course, a thankless task, but the domestic “nine” could probably look like Fabia today...

Story

The prototype of the car was first demonstrated at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003, where it created a real sensation. Serial production of the Skoda Roomster was launched in 2006. Interestingly, the production Roomster has not undergone significant changes compared to the concept. The new model had a slightly longer length, and also received more familiar hinged doors instead of the single sliding one in the concept.

The main strength of the Skoda Roomster is its original, memorable appearance. Looking at the photo of the model, you immediately notice that the body seems to be divided into two parts - driver and passenger. But despite this, overall the car looks solid and harmonious. It's incredible, but is a combination of seemingly incompatible body elements. The front part of the model follows the design of the Fabia hatchback, and the rear part has an almost vertical trunk lid and elongated lights. Huge side windows and a glass roof are designed to lighten the structure, while creating excellent opportunities for contemplating the scenery outside the window. Other original design elements include hidden rear door handles.

The tall body and large windows create an incredible feeling of spaciousness, filling the interior with light. And this is not just an illusion: Roomster has an impressive geometric reserve of space, allowing people of any height and any build to sit comfortably. The layout of the steering column, as well as the controls on the dashboard, is thought out with German care, and the build quality is traditionally consistent with higher-class cars. The ground clearance of the model is 165 mm.

The Skoda Roomster seats five people and is equipped with the proprietary VarioFlex interior transformation system already included in the base. There is no rear sofa in the car, but instead there are three separately adjustable seats in the cabin that can be moved, folded, or completely removed from the cabin in a matter of seconds, turning the Roomster into a two-seater van with an impressive luggage compartment of 1810 liters.

For Russian buyers, the Skoda Roomster is available with two petrol engines. The basic one is a 1.4-liter engine with 86 hp. the alternative to which is a 105-horsepower unit with a displacement of 1.6 liters. In addition, the Roomster family has a Scout modification, which is distinguished by a plastic body kit around the perimeter of the body, unpainted bumpers and expanded equipment. This version is equipped with a 1.2-liter TSI turbo engine producing 105 hp. You will find more detailed technical characteristics of the model in the Brand Catalog on the website auto.dmir.ru.

The price of the basic Ambition package starts at 614,000 rubles. Its equipment includes: two airbags, ABS, ESP, ISOFIX mounts, VarioFlex interior transformation system, air conditioning, front windows, heated front seats and central locking.

Spacious, roomy, comfortable from the point of view of each of the occupants of the cabin, it will ideally cope with the role of a family car. And thanks to a modern, well-tuned suspension, the car’s ride is ensured smoothly under any road and weather conditions, which makes it simply irreplaceable in Russian operating conditions.

The first answer that came to mind even before the car was at the disposal of the editors was “we simply don’t like compact vans.” Maybe. Especially when you consider that class B passenger cars account for more than a third of our new car sales. And crossovers, SUVs and pickups occupy another third of the primary market. And only the remaining 30% is distributed among all other types of cars.

However, there is a difference between a compact van and a compact van. Over the past year, Nissan Note sold 9,055 copies in our country, Kia sold almost 4.5 thousand Venga models and four thousand Soul models; more than 3.5 thousand Russians drove away from car dealerships in brand new Opel Merivas. While the Czechs were able to sell only 1,825 Roomsters.

Maybe the whole point is that Roomster is not particularly actively advertised here. Unlike the same Note and especially Venga. But isn’t it customary for us to believe that a good product does not need advertising? It turns out that the problem is in the car itself?

Maybe our people are put off by the design? Of course, you can’t drink water off your face, but the appearance of the Skoda Roomster is truly specific. It takes some getting used to. The front end, without further ado, was taken from Fabia, but when creating the rear part of the car, the designers seemed to be given complete freedom of action. And they installed huge side windows, hid the rear door handles in the body pillars and made the window lines seem to be “torn” into two parts.

As they say in Odessa, you will laugh... But this is roughly how they make the chassis for the Roomster! They take the front part of the Fabia platform and weld the rear part of the Octavia chassis to it through a small insert. Probably, this approach to car design led to lower development and production costs, on the other hand, this really gives the driver and passengers of the Roomster a feeling of spaciousness. The high body and large windows let so much light into the cabin that when you sit inside, the Czech monocab turns out to be larger than you would expect when looking at the car from the outside.

The front panel of the cabin, like the front part of the body, is borrowed from the Fabia model: no design frills, but everything is thought out with German care. The hands find any key or switch intuitively. And the build quality is at the level of cars of a class, or even two higher. The sensations are reinforced by the purely geometric reserve of space. Getting comfortable behind the wheel was not a problem for me with my height of 193 cm. In this case, there is no need to adjust the seat height. And passengers of average height sat behind me without any problems. Despite the fact that I naturally pushed the driver’s seat all the way back. Occupants of the second row will especially appreciate the proprietary VarioFlex interior transformation system – the Roomster is equipped with it as standard. There is no traditional “back seat” in the car. Instead, there are three separate, independently adjustable chairs. The rear seats can be removed altogether. All together or each separately. When the middle seat is removed, the two side ones move toward the center by 110 mm. With this option, riders can sit as comfortably as possible in a car of this size. But I would still leave the middle seat. Although it is frankly uncomfortable to sit on: both the back and the pillow are absolutely flat and, moreover, narrow. But the back can be folded forward - you get a very comfortable “camping table” or armrest. In addition, this configuration option is excellent for transporting long items. For example, two-meter ceiling plinths made of polystyrene foam fit into the Roomster’s interior without any problems: one edge lay on the folded rear seat, the other on the front armrest.

The Roomster's trunk is roomy, but its volume is not amazing. But the possibilities for transforming the interior are impressive: in the back there are three separately adjustable seats that can be completely removed. With the backrest of the middle seat folded forward, it is very convenient to transport long items. In general, the interior of the Skoda Roomster is spacious. Without any reservations. Moreover, it turned out to be spacious without compromising the volume of the trunk. With the rear seats installed, it is 480 - 560 liters, and with the rear seats completely removed, it reaches 1,795 liters! However, there is one “but” here. These figures in themselves inspire respect, but in reality the width and depth of the luggage compartment are not impressive: the specified volume is achieved at the expense of the height. Therefore, when going, say, with your family to the dacha, bags with belongings will most likely have to be stacked on top of each other. Which is not always convenient. Not to mention what is not always possible. In general, the cargo and passenger capabilities of the Roomster will suit the average Russian family man (summer resident) quite well. And yet they take it from us with obvious reluctance. Then maybe it's the driving performance of the car?

But all five days that I drove the Skoda Roomster, it demonstrated exceptional behavior on the road! Sometimes I couldn’t even believe that this was a quiet family compact van. It handles the road perfectly! And at any speed, in turns of any complexity. It reacts eagerly to turning the steering wheel and at the same time without frightening nervousness. The “steering wheel” itself is always “filled” with pleasant effort. And you don’t know what’s happening to the front wheels, and at what angle you need to turn or tighten the steering wheel, but you know it for sure - you literally feel it with your fingers. At the same time, any shocks or vibrations from road unevenness are not transmitted to the steering wheel. The suspension doesn't bother you with excessive shaking either. You can’t call it soft, but it’s not too harsh either. It is dense and energy-intensive like a Volkswagen. In the city, tram tracks and other large irregularities, of course, do not go unnoticed, but there is not even a hint of breakdowns. All sorts of road trifles “dissolve” somewhere in the depths of the levers and springs. On a suburban highway with an average, by Russian standards, degree of death, at some point you completely stop “bowing” to every pothole. And Roomster doesn’t show the slightest dissatisfaction! Driving off the highway onto the dirt road leading to the village where we were filming, I was initially afraid that I would hit the edge of the rather low-hanging bumper or the crankcase protection somewhere. The fears turned out to be unfounded.

When you look at the Roomster from the outside, it seems too “low”. But in reality, a ground clearance of 140 mm turns out to be quite enough even for our country roads. With due care and caution, of course. Well, on a flat stretch of dirt road, the Roomster with its energy-intensive suspension even allowed us to “grab” from the heart in a rally-raid style. There is only one serious remark about the driving habits of the Roomster: the engine is rather weak. Vintage Volkswagen engine 1.6 l, 105 l. With. coupled with the not very efficient automatic transmission, they pull more or less confidently only in the city. On the highway, any overtaking of a truck turns into a test. You step on the gas and the engine gradually and steadily begins to gain momentum. You press again - and only then does the automatic transmission finally realize that it would be nice to speed up, switches down, and the speed increases more or less adequately to the road situation. In general, when overtaking, you need to especially carefully calculate each maneuver, and the rule “if you’re not sure, don’t overtake” should become the life credo of the Roomster owner! But fuel consumption is low. Based on the results of the five days that the Roomster 1.6 was at my disposal, the on-board computer showed an average consumption of 6.5 liters per 100 km. Here, travel around the city, daily trips along the city-suburb route, and a trip to the village (350 km round trip) were taken into account.

What's the result?

The Skoda Roomster proved to be an “exemplary family man.” A spacious, roomy, comfortable car from the point of view of each of the occupants of the cabin. Moreover, it does not succumb to the harsh Russian road reality and is extremely pleasant to drive! Of the minuses, we note first of all the excessive thoughtfulness of the 1.6-liter engine - 6-speed automatic transmission pair, as well as the clearly insufficient sound insulation of the engine compartment. At medium and high speeds the engine makes an excessive noise. Although his baritone cannot be called unpleasant. And, returning to the first question: why is Roomster so disliked in Russia? Since in everyday driving, as we have already found out, it does not give much cause for criticism, we are left with only one answer: price. And this option, of course, beats all the charms and advantages... The test Roomster 1.6 with an automatic transmission costs at least 684,000 rubles. Climate control, a two-din radio with four additional speakers, nets in the trunk, rear electric windows, parking sensors, a leather steering wheel, a white roof and other “joys of life” with which the test car was equipped, raised its price to more than seven hundred thousand rubles. A number of Roomster’s “classmates” (in particular, the already mentioned Nissan Note) are significantly cheaper with us. In addition, for that kind of money you can buy a golf-class station wagon in decent configuration with an engine more powerful than that of the test Roomster. What the Russians actually do...

Skoda Roomster price on the Russian market

The Czech compact van is supplied to the Russian market with 1.4 liter and 86 liter petrol engines. With. and 1.6 l, 105 l. With. The 1.4-liter is equipped exclusively with a manual transmission, the 1.6-liter with a manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission. There is only one standard equipment: Ambition. The “base” includes central locking with remote control, an immobilizer, two airbags, steering wheel height and reach adjustment, driver’s seat height adjustment, air conditioning, ESP, side mirrors with electric drive and heating, front electric windows, audio preparation, heated windshield washer nozzles . Skoda Roomster 1.4 costs 614,000 rubles, Roomster 1.6 – 654,000 rubles. with a manual transmission and 684,000 rubles. - in the version with automatic transmission. There is also an “off-road” Scout modification with a 1.2 TSI engine, 105 hp. p., plastic body kit, alloy wheels and extended equipment (climate control, side airbags, heated seats, fog lights). Price – 740,000 rubles with a manual transmission and 790,000 rubles. – in the version with DSG gearbox.

The prototype of the Skoda Roomster first appeared before the public in September 2003 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Three years later, the minivan entered mass production after its premiere at the March 2006 Geneva Motor Show. In 2010, the car underwent modernization and is sold unchanged to the present day.

The Czech minivan has a somewhat specific appearance. Although the car looks quite impressive and even slightly aggressive, which is facilitated by large head optics and air intakes that occupy a significant part of the front bumper.
But if the “face” borrowed from the “Fabia” looks ordinary, then the profile of the car closer to the rear has an original layout - huge side windows, rear door handles hidden in the body pillars, and the window lines seem to be “broken” into two parts. The rear of the Roomster features an almost rectangular tailgate and elongated taillights.

Well, it's time to move on to specific numbers. The length of the Skoda Roomster is 4214 mm, and the height and width are 1607 and 1684 mm, respectively. The front and rear axles are located at a distance of 2608 mm from each other, and 140 mm ground clearance (clearance) is “visible” under the bottom of the car. The minivan rests on the road with wheels measuring 175/70/R14, but 15-inch wheels with 195/55 tires are optionally available.

The interior of the Skoda Roomster can be described as follows: simple, without design frills, but everything is thought out with German-Czech care. The instrument cluster, while uncomplicated, is highly functional, and all the necessary information is displayed on a small display located between the main instruments.

At the very top of the center console there is a place for ventilation deflectors, between which there is an emergency warning button. Below is the climate control unit, which in the basic version is represented by three knobs, and in more advanced versions - full climate control with a monochrome display. Well, almost at the very bottom you can find an audio system that looks very simple, but sounds quite decent. In general, everything is intuitive. The finishing materials, although budget, are not oak, and everything is assembled at a high level.
The front seats of the Skoda Roomster have a good shape and a wide range of adjustments. In the back, instead of a traditional sofa, there are three separate chairs that move on a slide. This means that none of the passengers will feel a lack of shoulder space, the high roof provides plenty of headroom, and there is plenty of room between the knees and the backs of the front seats.

What makes Roomster truly impressive is its ability to transform the interior space. The seats can be folded individually or removed altogether, making it possible to transport large luggage and long items. And in the standard position, the trunk is acceptable - its volume is 494 liters.

But this amount of space is achieved due to height, not depth, which is not entirely convenient.

Specifications. Two four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engines are available for the Skoda Roomster. The base unit is a 1.4-liter unit, producing 86 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 132 Nm of maximum thrust at 3800 rpm. In tandem with the engine is a 5-speed manual transmission, directing power to the front wheels. This car is not endowed with impressive dynamics, but you can’t call it slow either - it takes 13 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, and the acceleration stops when it reaches 171 km/h. For a hundred kilometers, the 86-horsepower Roomster requires 6.4 liters of gasoline in mixed mode.
The top-end engine is a 1.6-liter engine with a power of 105 horsepower, which generates 153 Nm of peak torque at 3800 rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission helps him in his difficult task. Depending on the gearbox, the Roomster leaves the first hundred behind in 11.3-12.5 seconds, and reaches the maximum speed of 180-183 km/h. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle per 100 km varies from 6.9 to 7.5 liters in favor of the “mechanics”.

The suspension design of the Skoda Roomster is as follows. There are McPherson struts mounted at the front and a torsion beam at the rear. Disc brakes are used on all wheels, ventilated on the front wheels.

Options and prices. On the Russian market in 2014, Roomster is offered in the Ambition configuration at a price of 722,000 rubles. For a minivan with a 105-horsepower engine you will have to pay from 762,000 rubles, and for the version with an automatic transmission – from 792,000 rubles. By default, the car is equipped with ABS and ESP, driver and front passenger airbags, air conditioning, power steering, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, electric front door windows, standard audio equipment and 14-inch steel wheels. In addition, a wide range of additional equipment is available for the Skoda Roomster.
