Today, under the heading "Second-test" - one of the fairly common cars on our market - Volkswagen Passat Variant. Some personal data: year of manufacture - 1989, generation B3, mileage - 222 thousand km, front-wheel drive, 1.8 liter engine, manual transmission. The car is practically empty: the steering wheel is without power, the mirrors are adjusted manually. There is, however, an electric sunroof.

What is special about the Passat silhouette? Never mind. Before us is a "wagon" that fully corresponds to its name (that is, "wagon"). A large base, a disproportionately long cabin, of the total length of which a third falls on the cargo compartment. The latter is not at all modest: it holds as much as 465 liters in the standard version, if loaded only to the window line (just to the level of the sliding shelf that covers the load from prying eyes), and 850 liters if the car is loaded to the ceiling. And just fold down the rear sofa, and the boot volume increases to 1,700 liters (for comparison: the trunk of the noticeably larger Audi 100 Avant holds only 130 liters more). Passat can take on board more than half a ton of cargo without prejudice to itself (which, by the way, exceeds the capabilities of such an "indestructible", it would seem, car, like the GAZ-2402 station wagon).

Despite the "old" age of the design, the car is carefully designed in terms of aerodynamics. The result is low fuel consumption at high speeds, low level of aerodynamic noise, high maximum speed with relatively low-power motors.

Preview

The Passat is perhaps the most spacious car in its class. That's who is lucky, so it's the rear passengers: three will be located here quite freely. In the meantime, they are arranged, take a closer look at the driver's seat.

The four-spoke steering wheel overlaps the indicator lamps somewhat. The instrument panel does not suffer from an excess of information: instead of a tachometer, there is a large clock. To the left of the speedometer, which occupies the center of the shield, is a pair of indicators: water temperature and fuel supply. Both have scales digitized respectively in degrees and liters.

The heating and ventilation system is controlled by three rotary knobs on the center console. The symbolism is simple and clear.

Test drive

A very soft and informative clutch pedal and an equally soft gas pedal make starting off much easier. On the first try, we drove smoothly, without slipping or jerking. Very friendly "character"! The characteristic of the engine allows you to shift gears earlier than usual. As a result, in fifth gear, the car already feels good at about 50 km / h. Moreover, at this speed you can even accelerate. True, some patience will be required: the engine size is small, there is not enough torque.

The transmissions are quite long. The second has a ceiling in the region of 85-90 km / h. And acceleration on it is very good. Many foreign cars, even with more powerful engines, can be wiped out.

Passat handling is typical for all front-wheel drive cars of the concern of those years of production: they have one common feature - a pronounced understeer. Passat so "lazy" enters the turn at speed that sometimes you have to "force" him to fit. Perhaps this is due to the desire to improve the safety of the car on a slippery road (understeer is preferable to oversteer, with the latter the car easily breaks into a skid).

Many recognize the merits of the Passat, but scold it for its poor ride. However, in this case, there was nothing to complain about. For the first time we came across such a "soft" Passat: in terms of smoothness, it is approximately on the same level as the Audi 100 Avant with a C4 body.

While driving, the cabin is quiet. Which, however, is a characteristic feature of VW: even in the utilitarian Golf, the insulation is very good.

Comparison with "classmates"

The competition in class D is very strong. In addition to the VW Passat itself ($3,500)*, Audi 80 ($3,300), Mazda 626 ($3,300), MMC Galant ($3,400), Toyota Carina II ($3,000) are represented here. It is worth considering, however, that of the listed cars, only Carina II and Mazda 626 have station wagon options. All others are either sedans or hatchbacks.

Modern station wagons are often elegant and "charged" to the fullest. But in 1989, when the Volkswagen Passat Variant was released (provided for our test), the approach to station wagons was very different.

It is possible to characterize almost any representative of the "family" of those years as follows: large, roomy, rude.

Do not drink water from the face

For the first time a car with the name Passat appeared in 1973, a year before the debut of the world bestseller - Golf. Then the layout scheme with an air-cooled engine located at the rear became traditional for VW cars and managed to become an anachronism.

The front-wheel drive Passat’73 with a dropsy engine turned out to be a real find for buyers and a lifeline for the company. The success of the Passat was assured, and until last year it remained the largest "people's" car. Now the Volkswagen Phaeton has become the flagship.

The 1988 VW Passat was not a layout revolution, but its design at that time was very fashionable and attractive. Its "chubby" forms and a wide fold on the sidewalls looked especially good. Excellent work of stylists: even the station wagon version seemed handsome.

But what kind of "sad face"? This question was asked even by motorists who were not experienced in aesthetics. There was no answer. Perhaps, by the absence of a traditional grille, the designers wanted to remind that Volkswagen cars were once rear-engined. However, do not drink water from your face.

Keep order!

Why is this car popularly dubbed the "barn"? Perhaps the reason for this is the huge interior space. For the interior trim rather corresponds to a modest, solid apartment, and not to a rough utility room.

The main decoration of this spacious "room" are two armchairs and a sofa. Passengers are comfortable everywhere, regardless of the chosen seat. Those who chose the rear sofa will enjoy the spaciousness, and the third one will not be superfluous here. The driver and front passenger feel very at ease. I also noticed such a detail as the "shelves" of the armrests on the doors, complemented by comfortable handles.

The luggage compartment is designed for a solid amount of luggage. Useful space can be transformed by folding the rear seat in different ways. And the main thing here is not to be lazy to clean and keep order. Otherwise, the interior of the VW Passat will really quickly turn into a cluttered "barn". The owner of "our" car turned out to be not lazy: the interior of his car made a rather pleasant impression.

Showed "character"

The four-cylinder engine with a working volume of 1.8 liters immediately made itself respected. This "character" from this car, I did not expect. Acceleration is very fun and even fighting. With such a motor, you can not be afraid of traffic light "duels". However, there were some problems with gear changes: at first, the right hand could not find the second gear, including the fourth one instead. But even in such a situation, the engine did not turn sour, but continued to pull a difficult car. It turns out that the engine here is not only "torsional", but also high-torque.

The fighting enthusiasm cooled down in the corners: the big station wagon is still more prone to a leisurely, calm ride. No, he keeps well on a curved trajectory and behaves quite safely. But the suspension does not have the tenacity inherent in sports coupes: the VW Passat Variant is still a great family wagon.

Spacious and practical

It's rare to find a car with such a cheerful "character". Especially among the "farm" station wagons. The VW Passat 1.8 Variant struck me with its temper: I want to drive it aggressively, leaving the first crossroads. At the same time Passat remains roomy and practical car.

The third generation of the VW Passat, the most popular in our country, appeared in February 1988. Unlike the previous generation, the Passat B3 received only two bodies: a sedan and a station wagon.

In September 1989, an all-wheel drive version of Syncro appeared with a transmission equipped with viscous couplings.

The range of engines was very wide: 1.6 liters (72 hp), RF carburetor and 1F injection; 75 HP (EZ/ABN); 1.8 l, injection: RP - 90 hp, PF - 107 hp, RV - 112 hp and compressor PG - 160 hp, which was also installed on the Syncro model; 2 l: 9A, 136 hp And also RA / SB, with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 80 hp, which in May 1989 was supplemented with a 1.9-liter 68-horsepower 1Y diesel engine.

The low-power carbureted RF was removed already in July 1989, and the same one, but with 1F central injection, in 1990. At the same time, the PF and RV power units "left", and in 1991 - RP.

The best option "for your money" is, perhaps, the 16-valve two-liter 9A, installed since March 1990. In August of the same year, a 1.8-liter 75-horsepower injection DAM joined the glorious "family", in October - a six-cylinder 2.8-liter VR6 (AAA).

In April 1991, a 1.8-liter AAZ turbodiesel (75 hp) appeared, in August - a 1.8-liter ABS (90 hp).

In October 1993, the Passat underwent an upgrade - the Passat B4 appeared.
