Anti-theft “bulletproof vests” that protect car ignition switches from thieves’ tools appeared about twenty years ago - and we broke the first blocker of this type back in 1998. They broke it, I remember, in two minutes. And not so long ago we came across the latest design of protection - the Garant Pantsir blocker, developed by specialists from the Tolyatti company Flim.

Recalling past battles with anti-theft locks BLACK (AR No. 16, 1998), Ultra BLACK (AR No. 18, 2006), Barracuda (AR No. 21, 2004) and Garant Bastion (AR No. 12, 2004), we are forced to admit that None of these fights resulted in our quick victory. Weighty pieces of iron, which either strengthen the standard ignition switches or completely replace them, are able to withstand the criminal onslaught for a long time. And here’s what’s interesting: neutralizing them using a noisy metal-cutting tool or quietly opening them with master keys often takes the same amount of time, which indicates a balanced design.

Blocker Garant Shell is just from this breed. A massive and expensive (5,100 rubles) product consists of a metal casing that fits over the standard ignition switch and an annular flange that covers its end. When assembled, these elements form a closed protection that covers the ignition switch fasteners and strengthens its fragile silumin housing. The Shell is installed on the steering column once and for all - and, being hidden under plastic covers, does not betray its presence in any way. And the way to the gates and rollers, which car thieves like to use to start other people's cars, is blocked by a removable cover - it is unlocked and locked using the Abloy security mechanism.

A big plus of the Shell is its ergonomics: using such a blocker is very convenient. The only thing missing is an automatic latch that allows you to arm the car without using a key

When we park a car, we put the cover on, and before we start driving, we remove it. It’s a pity that both have to be done using a key, because there is no automatic latching of the lid. But the choice of the secrecy mechanism is correct. As our numerous experiments have shown, Finnish Abloy larvae hold rolls perfectly, and in terms of resistance to manipulation, they are the standard - at least in their price segment. Tolyatti Shells use two models of Finnish mechanisms: Abloy Classic with a one-sided semicircular key and Abloy Exec with a double-sided key. The differences are in price, number of “secrets” and ease of use: a semicircular key has to be oriented in the keyhole, while a double-sided key has a symmetrical code pattern. The keys are sealed in an opaque bag (before opening the package you won’t be able to see the code pattern!), and those who are chronically lost are reassured by a plastic card, which can be used to make a new key to replace the lost one.
