The desire to "manage the dream" took possession of more and more motorists. But already the first tens of thousands of kilometers of operation disappointed many of them. The new Corolla was not without flaws.

Transmission

It all started with the transmission. Along with a manual transmission, they also offered a new robotic MMT (MULTIMODE). In fact, this is the same mechanical gearbox, but with drives controlled by electric motors. The modes and algorithm of the box have found positive feedback from most owners of the new Corolla. However, already after 10-15 thousand, problems began, manifested by rough gear shifting, an increase in engine speed without switching to the next gear, the lack of assistance at the start and the transition to emergency mode with a further failure of the box and complete immobilization of the car. Rare owners of cars with MMT drove more than 50-60 thousand without malfunctions. The average mileage before the first problems was 30-40 thousand km. Toyota boxes, moving in large cities in the “gas-stop” mode, with numerous intersections and traffic jams, “died” especially quickly. Boxes often overheated, the clutch disc wore out quickly.

Among the shortcomings, one can note the complaints of some owners about the creaking of the clutch pedal and the shift lever drive. It is eliminated by lubricating problem areas with WD-40 or similar preparations.

The appearance of twitches while releasing the clutch pedal with a simultaneous increase in gas in 1st and 2nd gears, and sometimes when reverse gear is turned on, is a sign that the clutch pedal needs to be adjusted.

Some Toyota Corolla owners note an increase in noise levels when driving in 1st and reverse gears. In fact, this is not a defect, but only a specific feature of working in these modes.

Engines

The car received two engines 1.4l (4ZZ-FE) and 1.6l (1ZR-FE). The first was inherited from the previous model. Engine 1.6 designed almost from scratch. Later, 1.4 was replaced by 1.33 liters. Other problems and malfunctions

Winter operation revealed a number of shortcomings. In severe frosts (below -20 -25º C), due to temperature differences and moisture ingress on electrical contacts, it is difficult to start the engine. Often in winter, the right headlight washer jet freezes. The reason is the ingress of moisture and souring of the drive (return mechanism). It is treated with a "magic remedy" - WD-40.

Often the heater fan does not withstand harsh operating conditions. Its operation at maximum mode in a still cold machine leads to wear of the shaft on which the impeller sits. 2. Drive.

The electrically driven radial piston pump constantly maintains high pressure in the hydraulic accumulator (diaphragm type with a cavity filled with compressed nitrogen), so that the stored volume is sufficient for several clutch releases.
The pressure in the accumulator branch is controlled by a sensor - when the pressure drops, the unit activates the electric pump, and when the pressure again reaches the nominal value, after a few seconds the unit turns off the electric pump.
To redistribute fluid flows, a spool valve driven by an electromagnet is used. The pressure reducing valve bleeds fluid when the pressure is too high.

· When engine off, the channel between the drain and the GCC is constantly open and the clutch remains engaged.

· Start of movement. When the lever is switched to the 1st, 2nd or reverse gear position, the corresponding signal enters the MMT (Freetronic - TFT) control unit. When the accelerator pedal is pressed, the throttle position signal is also transmitted to the unit. After that, the unit puts the spool valve into pressure reduction mode, engages the clutch and the car starts off. The position of the spool changes gradually to ensure sufficient smooth engagement of the clutch. When the speed of the crankshaft and the gearbox input shaft are aligned, the block completely opens the GCC channel to drain and fully engages the clutch.

· Gear shift. When the gearshift lever is moved and the accelerator pedal is released, the corresponding signals are sent to the MMT control unit, which determines the need to disengage the clutch, and connects the GCC channel to the accumulator line. After the block determines the moment of the end of the shift (by the signal of the neutral sensor and the limit switches of the lever), the clutch is switched on again.

· Stop. When the vehicle is braked, when the gearbox input speed drops below a set level, the TFT control unit disengages the clutch.

· At opening the driver's door the corresponding signal enters the Freetronic control unit and it activates the electric pump to accumulate fluid pressure in the accumulator.

· If a car is in gear, then after turning on the ignition, pressing the brake pedal and moving the gearshift lever, the Fritronic control unit turns off the clutch, as a result, the lever can be easily transferred to neutral.

· Buzzer used to warn the driver in some situations:
- if the engine is running, the lever is in a position other than neutral and the driver's door is open;
- in case of an error during the downshift (for example, at a sufficiently high speed after the 5th gear, the driver tries to turn on the 2nd);
- if the driver tries to start the engine with the gear engaged;
- if the driver tries to start from a gear higher than 3rd;
- in case of excessive load on the clutch (for example, during prolonged operation with a partially engaged clutch);
- if the brake pedal has not been pressed for a set period of time with the gear engaged.

The Freetronic robotic manual transmission (sometimes referred to as Multimode or simply MMT) was developed from the traditional manual transmission by adding actuators shifted by electric motors. By adding an electronic control system, both automatic and manual gear shifting became possible.
