The long-awaited new product in the Russian segment of budget cars - the Lada Vesta sedan - in its overall dimensions is on the border of B and C classes. The length of the car is 4410 mm, width – 1764 mm, height – 1497 mm, wheelbase – 2635 mm. Underbody clearance of 178 mm allows you to confidently move on roads with poor surfaces, be it asphalt riddled with holes or a country dirt road. In addition to high ground clearance, good geometric cross-country ability is ensured by fairly short overhangs: front – 860 mm, rear – 915 mm.

The Lada Vesta engine line includes several gasoline power plants. From the start of sales, the car is offered only with a 1.6-liter engine producing 106 hp. This four-cylinder unit with serial number 21129 is a Russian development and is installed on other AvtoVAZ models, for example, on the same Lada Granta liftback. Later, the sedan’s engine range will be replenished with H4M (1.6 liters, 110 hp) and 21179 (1.8 liters, 122 hp) engines. The first engine is provided by the Renault-Nissan alliance, the second is domestically developed.

Gearboxes are represented by a 5-speed “mechanics” Renault (index JH3) and a 5-speed VAZ “robot”. The manual transmission is based on a 2180 manual transmission, which was supplemented with a Valeo clutch and a gear shift mechanism from ZF. The transmission was developed back in 2014, and since then it has been installed on many Tolyatti models.

The suspension of the Lada Vesta is arranged according to the classic design: MacPherson struts are installed in front, and a torsion beam is installed in the rear. The rack-and-pinion steering mechanism is equipped with an electric booster.

Domestic car enthusiasts no longer expected feats from AvtoVAZ in the form of really good cars. However, the designers managed to surprise even foreign critics with something: the technical characteristics of the new Lada Vesta did not let us down at all.

This nuance, combined with the relatively low prices for the new car offered to the domestic buyer (even in the highest configuration), created a resounding success for the model that had barely left the assembly line. Russian motorists are closely monitoring developments, and designers never cease to amaze: the characteristics of the Lada Vesta sedan promise to be surpassed in the same model, made in a station wagon.

Reviews about the characteristics of the Lada Vesta create a pleasant impression. Many car enthusiasts have the feeling that we are not talking about the products of the more than once disgraced AvtoVAZ, but about a solid, brand new budget-class foreign car.

It is worth noting that at this stage the Lada Vesta sedan, the characteristics of which have already amazed the public, is the only mass-produced body type. AvtoVAZ facilities will be ready to produce a hatchback of this model by the end of spring 2016, and the model after restyling will undergo all kinds of test drives and will be released for sale only by the fall.

The best news is saved for last. The technical characteristics of the Lada Vesta station wagon promise to become something qualitatively different and superior to the capabilities of a sedan and hatchback. Information about the exact performance of this model is not yet available, but work on creating a Vesta of this type is already underway at the concern. The impressive dimensions of the Lada Vesta deserve special attention. Currently, the car is the largest in its class - and this guarantees not only stability on the road, but also space for the driver and passengers, and a spacious trunk. Of course, maneuverability in urban conditions suffers somewhat from its large size - however, this nuance is compensated by the excellent handling of the model, revealed during the test drive.


The standard body width will be 1764 mm, and the height will be 1497 mm. At the same time, the sedan will be slightly longer than the hatchback: the overall length of the first will be 4410 mm, and the second – 4250 mm. The shorter length of the second body type, which could have a negative impact on the size of the trunk, is compensated by the higher height of the rear of the car.

The wheelbase length for both the sedan and the hatchback is 2635 mm, and the track width is 1510 mm. With the given proportions of the wheelbase, the turning radius is only 5.2 meters - this is a fairly good indicator for a car of such impressive size for its class.


The ground clearance of the model is quite high, but varies depending on the assembly and configuration. As past experience has shown, the characteristics of the Lada Vesta “Sport” (WTCC) will differ from standard types of city car configurations: the ground clearance of the sports model will be significantly lower to ensure greater stability on a flat road and greater downforce of the air flow.

Since the station wagon predicted by the leaders of the Vesta project does not yet have an exact design, it is worth talking about the technical characteristics of the available body types. By the way, they are absolutely identical for both the sedan and the hatchback - the choice of body type depends solely on the buyer’s requirements, aesthetic and practical considerations.

The standard Lada Vesta, the technical characteristics of which fully meet the harsh realities of Russian roads, will be produced with a 1.6-liter sixteen-valve engine producing 106 horsepower and a five-speed Euro manual transmission. Modifications with a less powerful eight-valve engine (power – 87 hp) and a similar gearbox with a built-in kick-down option will also be available. Fortunately, for automatic transmission lovers, some “Comfort” trim levels and all “Lux” trim levels have a robotic gearbox.

Like previous models, the Lada Vesta is equipped with a rigid front suspension (MacPherson strut) and a semi-independent rear suspension with spring shock absorption. This information is valid for the sedan and hatchback - the station wagon, according to many experts, will undergo significant changes here.

The brakes installed on this model are standard. The front wheels are equipped with disc brakes, and the rear wheels are also equipped with drum brakes. This element passed all the tests and passed the necessary crash tests - the braking system became one of the few elements that did not require major modifications.

Convenience and speed

Lada Vesta is by no means considered the most comfortable car in its category - many foreign cars still surpass even the Luxury trim level in terms of their equipment. Another thing is that the ratio of price and characteristics of the Lada Vesta car makes this new brainchild of the AvtoVAZ concern a much more profitable purchase. In its price segment of budget cars, Vesta has no competitors: the price of the standard Classic configuration is a little over 500 thousand rubles, and the full Luxury configuration costs only a quarter more (625 thousand rubles) with functionality comparable to that of an expensive foreign car.

The trunk dimensions are quite impressive. It is very deep and very convenient, since the wheel arches of the body practically do not stand out inside the car. The working volume of the trunk is 450 liters - here Vesta also did not take the lead in its category, however, this figure is quite good.

As for speed, there is good news for those who like to drive. The technical characteristics of the Lada Vesta allow the car to accelerate to 185 km/h, while reaching 100 km/h in just ten and three tenths of a second. For a hatchback, naturally, slightly different aerodynamic conditions apply - however, its speed and acceleration will be quite good for a car in the budget price segment.

That’s right, strictly speaking, the car is difficult to unambiguously classify as segment B, since it is at the junction of classes B and C. The length of the sedan is 4,440 mm, with a width of 1,764 mm and a height of 1,497 mm, and this is noticeably longer than the Hyundai Solaris (4,375 mm, 1,700 mm and 1,470 mm), which is one of the main competitors of the Russian car.

The wheelbase of the Lada Vesta is 2,570 mm, and the track of the front and rear wheels is slightly different - 1,495 mm and 1,502 mm, respectively. The ground clearance of the new product is traditionally higher than that of foreign cars and is equal to 171 mm under the crankcase of the power unit, provided it is fully loaded, and also 144 mm, subject to change under the engine mudguard. In this regard, AvtoVAZ also offers a wide choice. The main gearbox will be a 5-speed manual, which is also installed on other VAZ models. In 2012, it was modified, some components were replaced, Japanese and German parts were supplied, the volume of oil poured was reduced, and other work was carried out. Engine

It is planned to install 4 engines on the car: VAZ 11189, VAZ 21129, VAZ 21176 and a foreign one, developed in 2006 by the Renault-Nissan Alliance HR 16DE-H4M.

Lada Vesta body

The body is made of steel, and such modern materials as composite or aluminum are absent in it due to economy. This means that the weight of the car, relative to, for example, PRIORA, has not changed. But VAZ employees say that there was no goal to reduce weight.

First of all, engineers focused on ensuring a high level of passive safety, reducing noise, vibration and increasing rigidity. And now they claim that they have coped with the task. According to them, the body of the LADA VESTA in torsion is several times stiffer than Priorov’s. This was achieved through the use of computer modeling, which made it possible to correctly distribute forces and high-strength alloys.

Such achievements give hope that doors will stop jamming and squinting, plastic will not creak in the cabin, and handling will become sharper.

Suspension

The suspension has features typical of VAZ models. But in general, the design is new, allowing us to reach a new level of vibration and acoustics, and achieve better vehicle handling characteristics. The rack is now located at the bottom, which will also improve handling.

As for the rear suspension, it is from Renault-Nissan. A drum type brake system is used. Drums are as efficient as discs and are the best option in terms of price/quality ratio.

Ground clearance of Lada Vesta

The ground clearance of the experimental Vesta model when fully loaded is not particularly different from other Lada models and is 178 mm. It remains to be added: the suspensions are distinguished by their long-travel characteristics, which is unusual for passenger cars. Perhaps the high seating position does not impart elegance, but they specifically tried to adapt the car to Russian conditions with not very good roads.
