We had to invent a new comparison method - we calculate the arithmetic mean value for each car for all measured parameters (if a range is specified, we take into account the maximum value). Of course, in this case, the winners are the models with the largest range for adjusting the front seat, but this indicator is far from the last, like other parameters, it directly affects the comfort of the driver and passengers. You will be surprised, but all of them are inferior to the more compact Kia Soul in terms of interior space! Moreover, comparing the Soul with other SUVs that we tested earlier, you can see that Kia is one of the most spacious crossovers in the overall standings. But it’s surprising that it was surpassed by the Chinese Haval H2 and Zotye T600 - they are noticeably larger than the “Korean” in size.

But among the most budget-friendly front-wheel drive pseudo-crossovers we can mention the Renault Sandero Stepway. Look, in most parameters it is slightly inferior to the platform Lada Xray, but it is significantly superior to it in terms of shoulder room. It is also noteworthy that at the end of the rating were cars that are more focused on the comfort of front passengers. They are quite spacious in the front part of the cabin, but they are much more constricting for rear row passengers. Each of the compared cars has its own peculiarity - a detail that will be the envy of many competitors. Ford Mondeo 4th generation (Mk IV) is a large 4.84-meter car for relatively little money. Prices for used versions of 2009 with a 2-liter gasoline engine with 145 hp. start from 500,000 rubles. However, compared to its rivals, the “German” car looks less impressive: massive, clumsy, and on wheels with small rims (for example, 16-inch) they look absolutely terrible.

The most stylish, but at the same time the least practical is the Honda Accord. The Honda's interior is quite wide, but there is not enough space for rear passengers. The trunk volume of 467 liters also does not give much reason for pride.

The “Six” is the “golden mean”: compared to the Mondeo, it is slightly smaller outside and inside, but it looks dynamic, and the trunk can accommodate 519 liters of luggage.

Aesthetes will be pleased with the Accord's interior: elegant and friendly - the driver will feel very good behind the wheel. Mazda also makes a good impression, although in the case of the “six” you will have to reckon with the creaky driver’s seat. The plastic of the Mondeo's interior endures the effects of time a little worse than others - scratches, clicks and squeaks appear.

The 2-liter gasoline engines of Mazda and Ford are structurally similar in many ways - this is the result of cooperation between these two companies. The Mondeo engine is characterized as reliable, but, unfortunately, it turns out to be a little sluggish. Burning an average of 9 l/100 km, you expect more from the engine. In the “six,” the power unit has a lighter weight, which means the car’s dynamics are better, but fuel consumption is just as high. Honda delivers the greatest driving pleasure, it is the fastest and least thirsty - 8-9 l/100 km. Each motor uses a chain-type timing drive. Honda Accord 2.0

Accord has loyal fans and is unlikely to lose them any time soon. The eighth generation turned out to be thoughtful in all respects. It looks attractive, behaves great on the road, and, most importantly, is durable and reliable, especially with a 2-liter gasoline engine under the hood.


It is the 2.0 liter engine, according to many mechanics, that is the best choice. If you carry out maintenance in a timely manner (the on-board computer can tell you about the need for maintenance) and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, then the engine almost never causes trouble. Of course, this does not exempt the potential buyer from thoroughly checking the engine.


In the case of other power units, everything is not so rosy: the 2.4-liter gasoline engine consumes a lot of fuel and sometimes annoys with excessive oil consumption; The 2.2-liter turbodiesel is excellent from a technical point of view and quite economical, but it often has to deal with the notorious shortcomings of the DPF filter.


Other Accord components fail quite rarely, which is probably due to the legendary reliability of the Japanese and the relatively short age of the model. However, owners note the noisy operation of the suspension when driving on rough roads and the rather rapid wear of some plastic interior parts. It is also worth mentioning that several cases of corrosion spots appearing under the hatch seal have been recorded. However, no other systematic faults or problems were identified.

The Accord has little to fault in everyday driving: it offers comfortable seats, an aesthetically pleasing interior, and good ride quality. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment comes during price analysis. The Accord is not one of the cheapest mid-size cars.


Body

When inspecting a car, it is necessary to check two places: the lower part of the hood (in copies of 2008-2009, cases of corrosion were noted), as well as the hatch seal, if available (sometimes the seal does not protect well from water ingress and, over time, under it rust occurs).

Engines

The 2-liter gasoline engine turned out to be good and very reliable. Problems with it are very rare. A turbodiesel is much worse in this regard, the main headache of which is problems with the DPF filter. In 2011, a service campaign was carried out for cars with a 2.2-liter diesel engine - the software responsible for the operation of the DPF filter, which clogged too quickly, was updated.

Chassis

The suspension copes well with the realities of Russian roads: signs of wear appear only with high mileage. However, there are problems with the steering.

Electrics

There is no doubt about its reliability, although it is more complex than its predecessor.

Ford Mondeo 2.0

The previous generation Mondeo, produced in 2000-2007, was initially very good. It was especially appreciated for its large trunk, spacious interior and good driving performance. But in 2005 the Passat B6 appeared, and suddenly it turned out that Ford was no longer the champion in space. Engineers from Cologne decided that the new generation Mondeo (Mk IV) should be huge on the outside and very spacious on the inside.


But the new model no longer looks so amazing, weighs a lot and does not behave as freely. In return, owners received a large trunk - 535 liters for the sedan and 528 liters for the hatchback (1448 liters with the rear seat folded) and rich basic equipment, including full power accessories, ESP, air conditioning and a full set of airbags, including for the driver's knee.


Among gasoline engines, the 2-liter 145 hp is considered the simplest and most reliable. and 2.3-liter 160 hp. The biggest drawback of engines is high fuel consumption - on average about 9 l/100 km.

Malfunctions are rare (ignition coils and generator), and their elimination does not require large expenses. The 2.0 liter petrol engine has a maintenance-free timing chain drive.


It is not recommended to purchase a version with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine: this power unit is weak, consumes a lot of fuel and sometimes causes problems with the variable valve timing system. There are also diesel modifications on the secondary market - the most preferred option is the 2.0 TDCi.

After restyling in 2010, turbocharged engines of the EcoBoost family with a displacement of 1.6 and 2.0 liters appeared in the engine line: they are more economical, but relatively expensive and have a large amount of additional equipment, such as a start-stop system.


The most important thing is that the Ford is finally well protected against corrosion: the native of Cologne no longer blooms!

Body

Problems with the hood lock are an annoying little thing that affects a large number of vehicles. The lock jams due to improper cable routing.

Engines

Structurally simple gasoline engines with a displacement of 2.0 liters and 2.3 liters, as a rule, do not cause problems. Sometimes the ignition coils fail and the generator stops charging. The 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine often has problems with the variable valve timing system. To repair it you will need about 30,000 rubles. Disadvantages of a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with a power of 220 hp: leaking crankshaft seals and increased oil appetite.

Chassis

The large mass does its job: the stabilizer struts and steering tips wear out quickly, and sometimes the front shock absorbers begin to knock - the cost of a new one is about 3,300 rubles. In earlier copies, there are problems with the steering rack - knocking and leaks appear. Restoring a faulty rack will require about 10-15 thousand rubles. The rear suspension is very strong.

Electrics

Interruptions in operation occur for two reasons: corrosion at the joints and software errors. In the latter case, updating the software usually helps. On older copies, the system for maintaining the angle of the xenon light beam may fail.

Mazda 6 2.0

The second generation of Mazda 6, however, like its predecessor, is in many ways breakthrough. Passengers on the back seat no longer experience a feeling of claustrophobia, all-wheel drive modifications and the sports version of MPS have disappeared from the model range, and corrosion has disappeared from the body. Yes, this is the first mid-size Mazda that doesn't rust.


But, unfortunately, the new “six” has several shortcomings that are unfamiliar to previous Mazda owners. Fortunately, the flaws are not serious. However, a knocking sound in the steering gear (affects most early-production cars), problems with the power steering or frequently blown bulbs do not fit in with an excellent brand reputation. Fortunately, there are practically no other defects.


The cost of parts and services in official services is somewhat overpriced. However, the car can be serviced at regular unauthorized services.

In terms of practicality, the Mazda is head and shoulders above the Accord, but loses to the Mondeo, as it is built on a modified platform of its predecessor.

The Six behaves a little worse than the Honda - a pity, as the dynamic design makes you expect more. The 2-liter gasoline engine with a power of 147 hp is not conducive to fast driving either. (in Europe since 2010 with direct injection and 155 hp). Fuel consumption is the same as that of Ford: in the combined cycle it is within 9 l/100 km. The 170-horsepower 2.5-liter engine allows for much more, but also burns more fuel. The base 1.8-liter unit produces 120 hp. will satisfy only the calmest drivers.


On the secondary market there are also diesel modifications, which are very popular in Europe. The base 2.0-liter turbodiesel is outdated and difficult to maintain. The 2.2-liter diesel is much better, only if you do not take into account the problems encountered with the timing chain drive. Good dynamics are provided by 2.2-liter units with power starting from 163 hp.

Body

Owners often report fogging in the rear lights, and less often in the headlights. You could only count on a replacement under warranty if there was literally water standing in the lantern. Since 2009, a modified seal has been installed.

Transmission

Problems often arise when switching from first to second - the prerogative of diesel modifications. In several cases, Mazda replaced all gears as part of the warranty, but the issue was never resolved. As mechanics say, this is an incurable defect in the Mazda 6 GH series manual transmission. KOREAN sedans "Hyundai Sonata" in the generation before and last we would have undoubtedly been classified in the first group, but the current model has outgrown them in all respects. The dimensions are the same as those of a sedan from the E segment. The interior is the most spacious in our review, and it captivates with its width, freedom and comfortable sloping backrest of the rear sofa. The interior equipment of the top versions corresponds to business class standards: there is a panoramic roof, heating in the second row, and a television tuner. There's even an adaptive suspension that automatically softens on bad roads and gets firmer on smooth highways. Well, except that the sound insulation does not reach premium standards.

The Sonata is also good as a family vehicle. Its engines are not gluttonous, the automatic transmission is adequate, and the trunk is not small. We also include the design as an advantage. In a light color, which is better emphasized by becoming “flowing sculpture”, “Sonata” looks light, fresh and informal.

“508” will not disappoint with its dynamics and controllability. The ride quality is better than the class average. The same can be said about sound insulation. The car was included in this group because it is the most spacious, not among the “overgrown” ones, but among the “normal” ones. The external dimensions and wheelbase of the Avensis are standard for D-segment cars, but the trunk holds more than 500 liters and the interior is almost two meters long. It is well equipped. Already in the “base” there is a comprehensive set of active and passive safety equipment, and in the top configuration you get all the benefits of business class.

“Avensis” does not present any unpleasant surprises in terms of handling. It uses an electric booster, engine and variator of a new generation. Moreover, everything is based on a well-developed, durable “trolley” and is made with true Toyota quality. It would seem that there are continuous advantages, but sales of this model are not growing in our market. She is “eaten up” by her older sister, the Russian Camry. We clearly tend to buy bigger things rather than tastier things...

Two generations ago "Honda Accord" got rid of “Americanisms” in design and decoration. In the last generation it acquired powerful motors. And in the current one it is already aiming to become one of the sedans with an amazing combination of ride and handling. The electric power steering on the Accord has adaptive characteristics. The front suspension is on double wishbones, the rear is independent multi-link. During the modernization, the engine received a new control program, which made it more responsive, and the “automatic” was equipped with a lateral acceleration sensor, and now it will no longer switch itself in sharp turns. The rarest middle class sedan on our roads is "Suzuki Kizashi". The model still causes mistrust among buyers, because everyone knows that this is Suzuki’s first experience in building a car in the D class. It is confusing that there is no choice of engines. The price is also confusing: for more than a million you can already buy a Grand Vitara SUV, although the latter will be much inferior in terms of equipment. Finally, in appearance, the new product does not really fit the role of a family car - the dimensions are smaller than those of its classmates, and the body shape is somehow pumped up, hooligan...

But, believe me, the first pancake from “Suzuki” did not turn out lumpy. The first Russian owners of “Kizashi” do not complain. The salon may be devoid of design ideas, but it does not creak or rattle. The chassis, engine, variator and all-wheel drive transmission, which can be operated both in single-wheel drive mode and in “Auto” mode, also turned out to be reliable. So it’s not surprising that after just two years of sales overseas, “Kizashi” rose to the top of car owner satisfaction ratings.

– All modifications are equipped with a 178-horsepower 2.4 VVT petrol engine with variable valve timing. The transmission of the all-wheel drive version is a CVT. The front-wheel drive model may also have a manual transmission.
– To the set of six airbags on all modifications, a driver’s knee airbag and an injury-proof pedal assembly have been added. The equipment also includes an anti-lock braking system and electronic stabilization.
– The “STD” version is offered only for models with a manual transmission and includes a two-way adjustable steering column, power windows, an audio system with USB, and heated front seats. Push-button engine start, remote trunk release and dual-zone climate control are also included in the “base”.
– CVT modifications are supplied in the “SDLX” version. Such models have complete equipment: they have xenon and fog lights, parking sensors front and rear, rain and light sensors, a subwoofer and cruise control, steering wheel paddle shifters, electrically adjustable seats and even an electric sunroof.
– Fabric interior and polyurethane steering wheel distinguish all “Kizashi” in the basic configuration. The rest use leather interior trim (including door inserts), and the wheels are made of light alloy, have a beautiful design and a solid 18-inch diameter. All models have chrome exterior trim.
– All-wheel drive models are in greatest demand, and such “Kizashi” are often in stock at Suzuki dealers. Any other model will most likely have to be ordered.
