Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet 2018-2019 is a full-fledged four-seater convertible based on the flagship, the world premiere of which took place in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2015.

On the outside, the new Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet is almost identical to the original coupe, with the exception of the presence of a fabric soft top that can fold completely into a special compartment in the trunk in 20 seconds. This operation can be performed on the move if the speed does not exceed 60 km/h.

The company calls the new product “the most comfortable convertible in the world.” The Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet was equipped with heated head restraints, an upgraded AirScarf system for supplying warm air to the necks of the driver and passengers, as well as an updated AirCap function, which increases the air flow through a deflector on the windshield and a wind screen behind the headrests.

In addition, the convertible has an advanced THERMOTRONIC climate control system, which automatically maintains the optimal temperature in the cabin both with the roof down and with the roof up. The system includes 12 sensors and 18 sensors. Plus, the car flaunts the presence of air purification and ionization systems.

In addition to all kinds of safety systems already known from other versions of S-classes, the new Mercedes S Cabriolet 2017-2018 uses safety arches, which are located behind the second row of seats and are ready to instantly extend in the event of a rollover.

Specifications

According to the manufacturer, the coupe and convertible share sixty percent of the same body parts. And besides the obvious differences, most of them are hidden from view. For example, a convertible car has a different power structure of the floor in the rear, which is made of aluminum. The company claims that it was able to achieve almost the same torsional rigidity for the convertible as the coupe.

The overall dimensions of both models are also almost identical. The length of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet is 5,027 mm, the width is 1,899, and the height is several millimeters more (1,417) than on a car with a hard top due to the design features of the folding roof.

Under the hood of the S500 Cabriolet is a 4.7-liter V8 with a power of 455 hp. (700 Nm), which is paired with a new nine-speed automatic transmission 9G Tronic. The dynamic characteristics of this version are not specified.

Also, the new 2018 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet is immediately available in the S63 AMG modification, which is driven by a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 with 585 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque, transmitted to all wheels via a 7-speed AMG Speedshift MCT gearbox. This option reaches a hundred from a standstill in the same 3.9 seconds as, and the top speed is limited to 250 km/h.

At the 2017 Frankfurt auto show, the premiere of the restyled version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet 2018 model year will take place. The car received retouched bumpers, different exhaust pipes and OLED rear lights using organic light-emitting diodes.

In the interior of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet, a new steering wheel with touch panels appeared, the 12.3-inch screens on the front panel were covered with solid glass, and three additional designs appeared among the interior trim options.

The initial version of the open version of the S 500 gave way to the S 560 Cabriolet, under the hood of which there is a 4.0-liter V8 engine with twin supercharging, producing 469 hp. and 700 Nm of torque. It is combined with a nine-speed automatic transmission, and the drive here, unlike a similar coupe, is exclusively rear-wheel drive.

The “charged” Mercedes-AMG S63 Cabriolet 2018-2019 sports a Panamericana radiator grille with vertical fins, and is driven by a 612-horsepower version of the above-mentioned four-liter V8. Here, the 7-speed automatic transmission has given way to a nine-speed gearbox, and the drive is 4MATIC+ with a front axle clutch.

This convertible additionally has a quick start function, so acceleration from zero to hundreds has been reduced from the previous 3.9 seconds to 3.5 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 250 km/h. At the same time, the top rear-wheel drive version of the S 65 remained with the same 630-horsepower 6.0-liter V12 - it goes to hundreds in 4.1 seconds. There is no information about prices and the start date of sales of new products yet.

What is the price

Accepting orders for the Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet in Russia started in January 16th, and the first cars reached dealers in April. For the S 560 convertible version they ask from 10,920,000 rubles, and for the all-wheel drive 585-horsepower S 63 4MATIC you will have to pay at least 13,650,000 rubles. And by the summer a top-end one appeared, for which they are asking from 19,300,000 rubles.

At the 17th Geneva Motor Show, the public premiere of the Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet 2019 in the new A238 body took place, but a number of journalists had already gotten acquainted with the convertible at a closed presentation held at the end of January at a test site in the vicinity of Phoenix, Arizona.

From the outside, the car is almost identical to the one presented earlier, with the exception of the roof, which here is made of three-layer soft material (four colors are provided for it: black, dark blue, cherry and brown). Electric drives fold and raise the top in 20 seconds, and the procedure can be done on the go if the speed does not exceed 50 km/h.

AT9 - 9-speed automatic, 4MATIC - all-wheel drive

The interior of the four-seater Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet 2019 is also practically no different from the original two-door hardtop. The trunk volume of the new model is 310 liters with the roof down and 385 with the roof up. Let us remember that the predecessor had 300 and 390 liters, respectively. However, the volume of the compartment can be increased by folding the rear seat backs.

Compared to the previous open “yeshka”, the length of the new product has increased to 4,826 mm (+ 123), while its width and height have increased by 74 and 32 mm, respectively. The wheelbase of the convertible is 2,873 mm (+ 113). Note that due to the seriously reinforced bottom and the roof folding mechanism, which is the same here as on the flagship, the new Mercedes E convertible turned out to be almost 150 kg heavier than the coupe.

As for the line of power units, the E200 and E300 modifications are equipped with 2.0-liter turbo-fours developing 184 and 244 hp. Accordingly, the E220d version is equipped with a 194-horsepower diesel engine with a displacement of 2.0 liters. The E400 modification is equipped with a 3.0-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 333 “horses,” while the convertible in this version can be ordered with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Over time, the line will be replenished with a 258-horsepower diesel engine (E350d), as well as a new 3.0-liter twin-turbo six with an output of about 450 hp, which will be equipped with a “warmed up” modification of the AMG E50. All versions of the new 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible are exclusively paired with a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission.

The proprietary 4MATIC all-wheel drive system is offered as an option for younger versions of the model (for example, for the E200). The Air Body Control air suspension is included in the base only of the top versions of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabrio, but is available for an additional fee for all others. When driving with the top open, comfort in the cabin is ensured by heating of all seats, the AirCap system and the so-called AirScarf air scarf, and in the event of a possible rollover, shooting safety bars are provided.

It was decided to produce the new E-class A238 convertible at the Bremen plant. Serial production of the car started in April 17th, the first cars reached Russia in the fall, prices range from 4,740,000 to 6,390,000 rubles.

For China, a pseudo-crossover and, and now the cherry on the cake is a convertible. As before - with a traditional soft top.

Following the donor coupe, the new convertible has become significantly larger than its predecessor: the wheelbase is stretched from 2760 to 2873 mm, the length is increased by 123 mm (up to 4826 mm), and the increase in width and height is 74 and 30 mm, respectively. Now the open E-class is a full-fledged competitor to the BMW “six”. The interior has become noticeably more spacious, although the trunk volume has remained almost unchanged: 385 liters with the roof up and 310 with the roof folded (the previous convertible had 390 and 300 liters). The rear seatbacks can be folded down, for example, to transport skis.

The roof folding mechanism with the necessary modifications was borrowed from the big one: a powerful electro-hydraulic drive removes the multi-layer roof in the same 20 seconds, but the speed threshold at which transformation is possible has been reduced from 60 to 50 km/h. There are black, brown, dark blue and cherry colored fabrics to choose from.

All the “comfortable” tricks familiar to open Mercedes have been retained. For an additional fee, the AirScarf system is offered, which supplies warm air to the riders’ necks through special air ducts in the front seats. You can also order an aerodynamic “cap” AirCap: the deflector on the windshield frame and the windshield are extended using electric drives and “calm” air turbulence in the cabin. All seats are heated as standard, and the open E-class is the only one in the family that sports Magic Vision Control windshield wipers from the S-class: the washer nozzles are built directly into the brushes so as not to inadvertently splash the riders.

It is clear that the underbody, compared to the coupe, has been seriously strengthened. In case of a rollover, powerful arches are hidden behind the backs of the rear seats, which “shoot” in a split second and protect the heads of passengers. By default, the open E-Class has five airbags for front passengers: two front, two side and one knee airbag in front of the driver. For an additional fee - inflatable curtains that hide in the upper edges of the doors and open up, as well as side airbags for rear passengers.

Almost the entire E-class set of options has been retained, including a 12.3-inch display instead of conventional instruments, matrix headlights and autopilot. Compared to the base sedan, ground clearance, like the coupe, is reduced by 15 mm. The basic suspension is with springs and amplitude-dependent shock absorbers, but shock absorbers with variable stiffness and pneumatic elements are also offered.

The company has not yet revealed the range of modifications, but they proudly announced that from now on the E-Class convertible comes not only with rear-wheel drive, but also with all-wheel drive. Apparently, the initial set of engines will be the same as the coupe. The base Mercedes E 200 is equipped with a two-liter turbo-four producing 184 hp, followed by the E 300 (2.0 liter, 245 hp) and all-wheel drive E 400 4Matic (3.0 liter, 333 hp). The only modification with a diesel engine is the E 220 d (2.0 l, 194 hp). All of them have a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission. Subsequently, other options will appear, including powerful AMG versions, which were not available on the previous generation convertible.

The new generation open E-Class will go on sale in the summer. It will also appear in Russia, because Mercedes was one of the first to adapt the ERA-GLONASS system to its cars, and new models are initially developed with a panic button. Prices will be announced in the summer, the first cars will arrive at Russian dealers in September. In recent years, the previous E-cabriolet found 20-30 buyers annually with us, although now the range also includes an open C-class, which costs from 3.4 million rubles. “Eshka” should become about a million more expensive.
