Reviews from Chrysler Voyager owners. Chrysler Grand Voyager - characteristics, photos, reviews Pros and cons in comparison with classmates

Chrysler Voyager I-II is the first and second generation of the classic American minivan. The model has a front-engine layout and front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Assembly was carried out at a plant in Austria. The name Voyager roughly translated means “Traveler”.

The first generation was introduced in 1988 in Detroit. The car became one of the first representatives of the minivan class. According to some reports, it was Chrysler that was the first to build a car with this type of body. After all, this car has been sold in America under the names Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan (manufactured by Chrysler) since 1983. Voyager was intended for sales in Europe.

The second generation was introduced in 1990. The minivan began to be equipped with all-wheel drive based on a viscous coupling, which was invented by the Austrian company Steir-Daimler-Puch.

The first and second generation models were presented only in three-door versions.

In 1995, Voyager II was replaced by a third generation car. This model set new standards in the “single-volume” class.

Technological features

An interesting technical feature of the Voyager is the so-called free axle concept, the essence of which is the possibility of free passage from the center console to the rear sofa.

A driver airbag is offered as a base option, and on 1994 models a passenger airbag is also available. By the way, Voyager is the first minivan equipped with airbags (1991).

Integrated child seats are built into the backrests of the second row seats.

The front doors have a conventional design, but the only side door is sliding. This door is very convenient in tight parking spaces.

The extended version is called the Chrysler Grand Voyager. This version also exists in a military version for the countries of South Africa with engines of increased capacity - 340 and 290 liters.

The most luxurious modification of the minivan, the Chrysler Town&Country, was sold on the American market.

Voyager looks very compact, however, its length is the same as the long-wheelbase Renault Grand Espace, and its width is even greater - about 2 meters!

The first Voyager had two cup holders in the cabin, and in subsequent generations there were fourteen of them.

Pros and cons in comparison with classmates

One of the advantages of Voyager I-II is that even the simplest model includes ABS, power steering, front and side airbags, and electric windows.

In addition, Voyager differs from its competitors in more luxurious interior trim and unprecedented smoothness.

Chrysler Voyager is equipped with power accessories and air conditioning, while simple minivans did not even have electric windows. In expensive modifications it was possible to order a leather interior and a three-zone climate system.

Among the advantages of the model, one should also note the large trunk volume - 450 liters, while the Grand Voyager has 670 liters. For comparison, the Mitsubishi Space Star has a trunk capacity of 370 liters, and the Mazda MPV has a trunk capacity of 294 liters.

Numbers and awards

Since 1984, the company has sold about 11,000,000 Voyager minivans. The car sells fifty thousand copies in Europe every year. And in developing countries, about 10,000 cars are sold annually.

Chrysler Voyager has received more than 150 awards from the automotive industry.

Chrysler Voyager is sold in more than 100 countries.

According to many American publications, Chrysler Voyager I was named “car of the year” in 1983-1984.

Every day, 2,766 minivans are produced at Chrysler group plants, therefore 115 per hour and almost 2 cars per minute.

The American company Chrysler has updated the already beloved Grand Voyager model. The modernization affected the exterior and interior design, technical characteristics and equipment of the Chrysler Voyager.

The appearance of the minivan has undergone a number of changes. Although Voyager has retained the impressive dimensions typical of all Americans, the car does not look bulky. Thanks to the efforts of the designers, the car acquired elegant features. The slightly rough lines have softened, giving the car a more presentable appearance without losing some of its brutality.

The car was installed on large 17mm alloy wheels corresponding to its dimensions. Chrome elements and factory tinting add special chic to the Voyager’s appearance. The car is also now decorated with a radiator grille with the Chrysler emblem. The roof of the new car has chrome longitudinal rails. The modernized Chrysler has become a prominent representative of the luxury class. Overall, the new design of the Chrysler Grand Voyager has become more modern.

Compared to the previous version, Voyager has grown a little.

American sizes:

  • The length of the car is 5.17 m;
  • Chrysler width – 1.99 m;
  • Height – 1.75 m;
  • The distance between the axles is 3.07 m;
  • Machine weight – 2.69 tons;
  • Engine capacity – 76 liters;

A wide color palette was a nice bonus. Models are available in metallic and other colors.

Interior

The updated five-door minivan is very spacious inside. The Russian buyer is offered a car in a single configuration. Voyager's interior is made of leather.

However, the seating arrangement is very different from its counterparts from other manufacturers. The creators of the Grand Voyager moved away from the typical 2/2/3 interior layout, placing the seats differently - 2/3/2. This is done to increase the level of passenger comfort.

The third-row seats are power-adjustable and angled, making long trips less tiring. The rear seats fold flat or on top of each other with the easy press of a few buttons, which allows you to significantly increase the volume of the already quite capacious trunk (about 940 liters).

The main concept of interior design is the combination of comfort and functionalism. Throughout the cabin there are various kinds of niches and pockets designed for the convenience of passengers and the driver. The steering wheel of the minivan is wide, with leather trim, very comfortable to hold in your hands.

The salon has a good level of sound insulation. Voyager is equipped with six airbags, climate control, a rear view camera, and an acoustic parking system. The non-standard location of the Chrysler Voyager automatic transmission lever is another highlight of this American. The control panel console houses a touchscreen display that displays video from the rear cameras. The multimedia system is at a fairly high level, although it is not overloaded with technical innovations.

The design of the Chrysler Grand Voyager and reviews about it can be seen on the website.

Price and equipment

Thus, we can say that the Chrysler Voyager has everything you need for the comfort of the driver and passengers, but at the same time, the interior is not overloaded with anything unnecessary.

If you wish, you can supplement the basic equipment of the American with some devices to suit your taste and budget. You can equip the car with a multimedia system for passengers, a sunroof or a navigation system at your discretion. Additional tuning will cost you from 20,000 rubles. and higher.

The minivan is of impressive size and has a fairly impressive price. The price for a brand new Chrysler Grand Voyager without mileage and with basic equipment starts at 3.3 million rubles. An American, with low mileage and a new year, will cost you not much less, about 2.5 -2.8 million rubles.

Specifications

The developers have placed a fairly powerful V-shaped six-cylinder gasoline engine under the hood of the updated Voyager. The engine displacement is 3.6 and the power is 283 hp. This allows the family car to accelerate to 100 km/h in just 9.5 seconds. The maximum speed of the car is 209 km/h.

There is also a diesel version of this car. The diesel engine is equipped with a 2.8 DT four-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 163 hp. The diesel version of Voyager reaches a speed of 100 km/h in 12.8 seconds. The engine has a front-longitudinal arrangement. The Voyager is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, with the option of manual shifting.

The car has front-wheel drive. The reborn Chrysler has independent front suspension and semi-independent rear suspension. The creators of the Chrysler Grand Voyager equipped the minivan with front ventilated disc brakes and rear disc brakes.

Test Drive

Chrysler is distinguished by its softness and smoothness, although the car was designed for ideal American roads. It corners quite easily for its size. Despite the low ground clearance, the Voyager is quite passable, although the front-wheel drive does not always cope. The American has power steering, which makes steering much easier.

The automatic transmission does not cause any complaints when driving on the highway, but in urban conditions you may encounter some troubles - there may be delays when changing gears, jerking.

Reviews

You can see the updated Chrysler Grand Voyager and reviews about it on the website. The owners of this car emphasize the high level of comfort, large size and spaciousness of the interior. Based on the reviews of the Chrysler Voyager, it becomes clear that a significant drawback was that the engine volume was too small for a car with fairly high fuel consumption.

Despite all this, the new Chrysler Grand Voyager is ideal for long trips and travel. Having looked at the Chrysler Voyager and the reviews about it, we can come to the conclusion that what attracts us about the American is, first of all, its size. Chrysler Voyager's design and technical characteristics are quite satisfactory for owners.

There will be no problems with repairing the Chrysler Voyager; parts are freely available. Even with such a serious problem as engine failure, it is possible to purchase contract engines. Looking through Chrysler Voyager reviews, you realize that the price of the minivan is too high.

The dynamics are excellent, the comfort is like in an office (leather), the trunk with the seats removed is 2x140, but electrical problems can be big... Since there are 4 ECUs and a bunch of all sorts of bells and whistles. And I like Americans... There are small problems, but this is due to age. There are no eternal machines. I have a Dodge Caravan (3, 3L) 1994 and a Chrysler Grand Voyager (3, 3L) 1998. Of course they are different, but the Dodge design, it seems to me, is... better, and the ground clearance is higher!

Chrysler Voyager, 2002

An excellent model, extremely comfortable both for long trips and for daily use. Spaciousness and load capacity are beyond praise! Excellent handling and maneuverability! The dimensions of the car are felt from the first seconds of driving! Ground clearance allows you to feel confident both when driving on the curb and outside the city!

Chrysler Voyager, 1998

I bought it a year ago, but I'm still as happy as if I got behind the wheel just yesterday. Despite its considerable dimensions, Chrysler is very playful (12 seconds to a hundred, maximum speed - 180) and economical (10-11 liters in the city). The interior is typically American and so comfortable that even after a long trip you don’t want to leave it. In winter, the car warms up to the desired temperature in a matter of seconds, and in the summer heat, air conditioning saves passengers. The steering wheel and suspension are also soft in an American way. $600 per year is spent on its maintenance (the car is serviced at Nord-Avto-M).
