More often, problems appeared on the Volkswagen Passat SS, operated mainly in city traffic jams. It is generally accepted that switching the gearbox to “manual” or “sport” mode when caught in a prolonged traffic jam allows you to avoid possible malfunctions. Automatic transmissions on the SS come in three series. Basically - the long-known DSG DQ200 gearboxes with a dry clutch and DSG DQ250 with an oil bath clutch. And much less common is the classic automatic transmission Aisin TF60SC/TF61SC, also known as 09G, also known as AQ250 or AQ450, depending on the version and designation system.

The Aisin automatic can be found with 1.8 TSI engines on cars of the first year of production or on American cars (mainly with a VR6 3.6 engine). We published about this automatic transmission, but we will briefly repeat what was said: the mechanical part of the transmission is quite reliable, but the valve body is heavily worn out by dirty oil and is difficult to repair. The gas turbine engine linings of the classical design quickly wear out during active movement: they are not designed for regular “floating” blocking.

With timely oil changes, a relaxed style of movement, reduction of oil change intervals to 40 thousand and modifications with the installation of an external fine oil filter, the box shows itself to be very reliable. But few people bother with this, so on average, after 100-120 thousand kilometers without changing the oil, the first problems begin: jolts, impacts when switching, rough operation and loss of dynamics.

Small repairs usually don't help much. Simply replacing solenoids will not work, and there are no original ones on sale. Replacing a valve body assembly is an expensive pleasure, and repairs using Sonnax kits with the installation of new plungers and solenoid bodies and the solenoids themselves require a good work culture and understanding of the processes. Often, under the guise of expensive repairs, a banal flushing of the valve body with replacement of the most worn solenoids and adaptation is given, which is not enough for a long time. Until 2012, the DQ200 on cars before restyling had problems with both mechatronics and the mechanics of the gearbox itself. The shift fork bearings often fell apart, the forks themselves broke, and the clutch overheated. After changing the gearbox generation, the number of problems began to decline: on the new generation, the mechanical part, forks were modernized, clutches were changed, mechatronics and control software were changed. As a result, the box became a little less dynamic, but much more reliable. All that remained from the previous generation was a weak differential and a not very predictable service life of the clutches and dual-mass flywheel, highly dependent on the human factor, pollution and load.

And still, even on a late box, bearings and forks can occasionally fail. However, you can learn more about this. I think there is no need to be afraid of such a box if it is thoroughly checked. They are no longer nearly as expensive to repair as they were five to seven years ago, the main problems have been identified, and spare parts are available.

Six-speed DSG gearboxes of the DQ250 series, which were installed on diesel engines and older gasoline engines, were somewhat more reliable from the beginning. The clutches here are in an oil bath and are made in the form of a package of large clutches, the oil pump of the box is mechanical, and therefore there are no problems at all. The service life of the clutches is more stable; due to pressure leaks and pump wedges, the mechatronics wiring does not burn out. Well, now about the sad thing.

When the clutches operate, the oil in the DQ250 becomes intensely contaminated. It contains a lot of magnetic wear products, which harms not only the mechanics of the box, but also the solenoids. And a standard external automatic transmission filter solves the problem only partially.

When the engine torque is above 350 Nm, the gearbox bearings and differential fall into the risk zone. “Dead” dual-mass flywheels greatly damage the mechanical part of the gearbox and lead to oil leakage and serious damage.

The relatively low price of this automatic transmission leads to the fact that it is used to replace the somewhat more capricious seven-speed DQ200 in the event of a global breakdown of the latter. But the DQ250 itself, on well-tuned engines, is replaced with the older version of the DQ500 - a seven-speed gearbox with wet clutches, even stronger and more durable.

All SS gasoline engines rely on fairly reliable and trouble-free control and cooling systems. Even on ten-year-old machines, all components can be “native”. Of course, when tuning, some try to replace the ignition coils with “reinforced” red ones from the Audi R/RS, and the contamination of the radiators and the serviceability of all additional electric pumps need to be monitored at both levels. But with stock or almost stock engines, all this works quite reliably.

Many people delay in correcting problems with an appetite of up to a liter per thousand kilometers, although the indication for decoking or overhauling is an appetite of up to a liter per ten thousand kilometers. Decarbonization with dimexide, which is now fashionable, is complicated by the fact that the oil pan is painted and clogs the oil receiver with paint, and the plastic in the timing belt and the pressure sensor cannot tolerate dimexide.

A standard repair involving replacing the piston group with a modernized one and replacing the timing belt usually costs up to 150 thousand rubles.

In general, buying a car with these engines is a lottery. You need to check everything: engine oiling, the crankcase ventilation system, the condition of the turbine, the presence of oil deposits on the pistons, the presence of a “fur coat” on the intake valves and oil appetite in general. In general, this requires a person who knows specific motors well. It is also advisable to know exactly what version of the engine it is, with which piston group, with which oil pump, which timing support and chains.

The 1.4 TSI engines on the Passat CC are a later version of the EA111 engines, and cars with the EA211 were not sold here. And it’s a shame, because potentially the second generation of 1.4 TSI engines is the most reliable. But the first one turned out to be.
