The current generation of the Kia Cerato sedan is the third in a row. Its world premiere took place in the fall of 2012 at the Los Angeles Motor Show. And already in the spring of 2013, we tested the car in Russia. It’s impossible to say that since then the sedan has become outdated and felt uncomfortable in the company of its main competitors. Cerato performed well in the competition, only slightly losing to the newest Hyundai Elantra (largely due to its less powerful engine) and outperforming such a strong player as the Nissan Sentra. However, four years by today's standards is a critical period for releasing a car unchanged. And today the Koreans present us with an updated sedan, which should become even a little better.

The Cerato's headlights and grille are now less intricately shaped than before. The updated sedan looks more serious, stricter and... much more reminiscent of a more expensive one. The fog lamps in the front bumper received a changed shape, with vertical air intakes “cut through” at the edges. An elongated “skirt” under the bumper, made of pliable plastic, is also useful: the distance from the edge of the bumper to the ground is as much as 190 mm - not bad, but you still need to be careful when parking “facing” the curbs.

The rear lighting equipment retained its shape, but the design of the lights became more expressive. Firstly, the optics are now visually divided into two parts: red - on top, white - below. Secondly, LED taillights are now installed on expensive versions of Cerato. Together with a modified trim at the bottom of the bumper and an oval muffler tip (it was round before restyling), they significantly refresh the appearance of the Cerato. And only in profile the updated car is almost impossible to distinguish from its predecessor.

By the way, all the cosmetic changes described above did not at all affect the geometric dimensions of the car. The updated Cerato, millimeter by millimeter, repeats the dimensions of its predecessor. Length, width, height and wheelbase are 4560, 1780, 1445 and 2700 mm respectively.

There are hardly more changes inside than outside. You can bend your fingers - one hand is enough. The finish of the automatic selector and the shape of the buttons at its base have changed. A little lower on the central tunnel there is a stamping where you can attach a smartphone. The side air deflectors have a chrome edging, and the climate control and multimedia system units have new buttons. But on our test, non-commercial car, the multimedia system is still old, with a monochrome display. On production cars in similar configurations there will be the promised new buttons and a rear view camera. It's a pity, the display diagonal is ridiculous - 4.3 inches. More mature displays are not yet available for the sedan.

There were no problems with the quality of the interior. Most plastic panels that you can reach with your hand are soft. In this sense, Cerato is preferable to its co-platform Hyundai Elantra. And the ergonomics are in perfect order. The front seats are medium-firm and have an unobtrusive profile to accommodate a wide variety of drivers. The adjustments are manual even in the most expensive trim levels. But there is no longer any adjustment of the lumbar support. Although on pre-reform cars with rich trim levels it could be adjusted electrically. There is a decent amount of knee space in the back, by class standards, allowing people even 190 cm tall to sit comfortably. There are a pair of air deflectors and two-stage seat heating.

The power units are the same, as are the gearboxes. The Kia Cerato can be equipped with a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine producing 130 horsepower in combination with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Or you can choose a 150-horsepower two-liter engine, which works only in tandem with an automatic transmission and, according to the manufacturer, accelerates the sedan to hundreds in 9.3 seconds. We tested just such a car.

There are no questions about the acceleration dynamics. But the sound insulation of the engine compartment is sad. As soon as the tachometer needle approaches the red zone, the interior is filled with an unpleasant hum and forces you to leave the right pedal alone. I hope that Kia will resolve the noise insulation issue promptly - without waiting for a generation change or the next modernization. However, let's get back to the technical component.

A new electric power steering debuted on the 2017 Cerato. It is installed directly on the steering rack, and its settings, according to the manufacturer, should provide better feedback compared to its predecessor. To be honest, I don’t remember the behavior of the pre-reform Cerato too well, but the new one - even in the sport driving mode (optional Drive mode allows you to change the settings of the engine, automatic transmission and steering) does not shine with the sharpness of reactions. Only the effort on the steering wheel changes - but not the quality of feedback. Plus the car remains quite rolly. At the same time, on speed bumps and other spot irregularities, the suspension sometimes breaks. However, consider me to be nitpicking. People who perceive a car solely as a household appliance will not be disappointed. And from a purely consumer point of view, the Kia Cerato is really very good. Who else in the class is ready to offer a five-year warranty with a mileage limit of 150,000 km?

And one more thing: during the update, Cerato received several new options, including monitoring of blind spots with indicators on the rear-view mirrors, a system for assisting when leaving a parking lot in reverse, as well as the possibility of keyless access to the luggage compartment. For the trunk lid to open automatically, you just need to approach the car with the key in your pocket and linger at the rear bumper for a couple of seconds. Checked it - it works. Very nice.

In general, the update to the third generation Cerato turned out to be quite superficial, but nothing more was needed yet. This is an absolutely adequate family car, well equipped even in the basic version. And the fact that the car is produced in a full cycle at the Avtotor enterprise in Kaliningrad allows the price to be kept at an acceptable level. All other things being equal, the Kia Cerato is more than 100 thousand rubles cheaper than the Elantra, which is assembled from Korean car kits at the same Avtotor. I think it's a great argument!

Of course, in order to finally dot the i’s, we put together a comparative test in which the updated Cerato went head to head with four of its classmates. Prices for the updated Cerato sedans have increased slightly. For example, the cost of the basic 1.6-liter Comfort version with a 6-speed manual remains the same - 952,900 rubles. Two-liter sedans with an automatic transmission in the Premium configuration have risen in price by 50,000 rubles and are now priced at 1,234,900 rubles. In my opinion, this is an adequate fee, because in addition to a refreshed appearance and a new electric power steering, useful options that were previously unavailable are included here.

The list of configurations itself has also been expanded. The 1.6-liter Cerato with automatic transmission can now be purchased in the initial Comfort version. And the two-liter car is in the mid-range Luxe configuration. Previously, such cars were offered only in the top versions Prestige and Premium.

First test of the updated Kia Cerato: localization price

The Kia Cerato 2017 premiered in January of this year. After the Detroit motor show, car enthusiasts around the world finally saw photos of the new sedan. The new product has yet to take part in the March “show” in Geneva.

But we already know of numerous and significant changes in the model. South Korean engineers focused their efforts during restyling on bringing the features of the Cerato to perfection: design, lighting, wheels, trim and interior details, multimedia, screen with applications, air conditioning, seats and a new diesel engine... But first things first.

Exterior

Photos of the Kia Cerato 2017 after the restyling are impressive. Before us again is one of the most attractive and popular C-class sedans, in the appearance of which pleasant, albeit small, innovations have appeared.

The lines of the body have become smoother, the appearance is holistic, without unnecessary details, lines, or shapes. The exterior is harmonious, voluminous, modern.
The front part of the body has changed significantly. Instead of the previous one, a new and larger radiator grille appeared. bumpers have changed. At the front there are sections of fog lights (their shape has also changed) and elongated headlights with running lights, which are filled with diode lighting equipment.
The lanterns also became more elongated and new lines appeared in them, forming an interesting pattern.
The design of the rims has changed, and the wheels themselves have been improved. It was possible to achieve greater expressiveness of the lines and shapes of the car, while maintaining the same choice: steel 15 and 16 inches or cast 16 and 17 inches.
In the 2017 line of sedans, in addition to branded colors (snow white with a pearl sheen, shiny metallic, “golden strike” with a metallic effect, black with a pearl sheen, “metallic flow”, cosmic blue), new ones also appeared. After the previous 6, 10 color options will be available.
