We reached our destination, prepared for the hunt, but there were no comrades. I called a friend who was driving a VAZ to ask where they got lost. It was a shame to call - I’ve never heard so many unpleasant words and expressions addressed to a car (I’ve definitely expanded my vocabulary). How happy I was then that I switched from my old Zhiguli to a Prado 150. I also liked it when I saw the advertisement on TV. I thought, “I wish I could save up money for such a unit.” But he never saved it - he took it on credit. To be honest, I wanted this car so much that I didn’t delay the decision for long.

My personal opinion is that I made the best choice from the possible options. The car moves smoothly along a flat and not very flat road, and in difficult (and even inaccessible) places there are simply no equal. I want to talk further about the main features of an SUV and what you should first pay attention to when buying.

A little history and main differences

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 is the fourth generation of Land Cruiser Prado SUVs. The car was presented at the international exhibition in Frankfurt in 2009. The dimensions of the Toyota Prado 150 were: height – 1880 mm, width – 1885 mm, length – 4760 mm.

This all-wheel drive SUV is built on an improved Toyota 4Runner platform and is available in five and seven-seat versions. The fourth generation Prado received a more bulky body, thanks to which the SUV began to have larger dimensions compared to its predecessor. In order to increase the bending rigidity of the structure, the spar supporting frame was strengthened.

What should you pay attention to?

Before you buy a Toyota Prado 150, you should determine for what purpose you are purchasing an SUV. If you want to travel with the whole family, not forgetting even your beloved mother-in-law, it is best to opt for the seven-seater version of the SUV. If you plan to transport large items and cargo, the five-seater option is more suitable for you. The luggage compartment volume of the five-seater version of the SUV ranges from 621 to 1934 liters, while for the five-seat model this figure varies from 104 to 1833 liters.

The car interior deserves special attention. It should look expensive. This is a truly “masculine” salon, in which there are practically no shortcomings. Stylishly designed, multifunctional steering wheel, leather seats, excellently designed center console with geometrically correct shapes, moderately bright instrument panel illumination, guaranteeing excellent readability.

Very roomy and expensive interior. If you get behind the wheel of an SUV at a car dealership and don’t feel like the king of this world, then you mistakenly got into a Lada 4×4, not a Toyota Prado 150. You will not find any simplicity, boredom or monotony in the interior of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150.

In addition, it is recommended to pay attention to the equipment of the SUV with various electronics. Even in its simplest configuration, the Prado 150 has light and rain sensors, a rear view camera (images are shown on the monitor in the center of the dashboard, the monitor diagonal is 4.2 inches), cruise control, heated seats, parking radars, as well as electrically adjustable steering wheel position by reach and inclination.

Don’t forget about the PUSH START system, thanks to which the engine is started by just pressing one button - quickly and conveniently, the Smart Entry system, which allows you to open the door locks with one touch of the handle without using keys. Please note that in the SFX (80) and SFX (E3) versions of the SUVs there is not a regular, but a touchscreen monitor, and instead of the usual nine-speaker audio system, a DVD player and 14-component JBL acoustics have appeared. There are 4 surveillance cameras installed around the perimeter of the “iron horse”. The navigation system is able to quickly recognize all commands in Russian. If you tried to test the navigation system, but it does not recognize commands, there are two options - either it is not there, or the king, that is, the Toyota Prado 150 SUV, is not real!

And what about Lux?

If you want the best, choose the SFX (E3) SUV trim level. Looking at the basic equipment, it seems: “Yes, this has everything you can dream of! I would actually live here. What else can be added to the luxury version?” It turns out that it is possible. In particular, the interior looks more stylish thanks to the presence of wood-look inserts. For maximum driver comfort, the luxury version of the SUV has memory for the position of the steering wheel, exterior mirrors and driver's seat.

In addition, if you choose a Prado with a third row of seats - congratulations, you are purchasing the top-end SFX (E3). The fact is that the third row of seats is provided only for the maximum configuration. Pay special attention to this, because unknowingly you can buy a seven-seat SUV by paying for options that you will absolutely not need in the future. Please also note that the third row of SFX (E3) seats is equipped with electric drives, which makes it even more comfortable.

“Heart” Prado 150 – what are you?

It is impossible to purchase a car and not inquire about the installed power unit. Alas, this, at first glance, truism is completely forgotten by some car enthusiasts. As a result, they purchase a car that does not suit them at all with its power.

Whatever configuration you purchase a Toyota Prado 150 diesel, its engine will have excellent power - after all, this is a premium SUV. And yet, they are different. And when choosing a particular model, you should take this into account. In the domestic market, buyers are offered three engine options:

  • Four-cylinder 16-valve 2.7-liter engine with a torque of 246 Nm at 3,800 rpm. Maximum power – 163 “horses”;
  • V-shaped six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 4 liters, capable of producing a maximum power of 282 hp. at 5,600 rpm. Torque - 387 Nm at 4,400 rpm.
  • Diesel 4-cylinder 16-valve engine. Working volume 3.0 l. Maximum power - 173 hp. at 3,400 rpm. Maximum torque is 410 Nm in the range from 1,600 to 2,800 rpm.

Since I purchased a Toyota Prado 150 in its maximum configuration (I am generally a maximalist in life), I actually tested the best of the engines. The feeling, let me tell you, is wonderful. I don’t speed in the city, but driving at full speed on the highway is the responsibility of every Prado owner. Extreme guaranteed! Speed lovers will be indescribably delighted.

Another important detail is the country of origin. Since SUVs were also produced for Eastern countries, make sure that the third digit in the VIN code is one. The numbers 3, 4, 8 or the letters B and C mean that the car was produced for hot countries. Such Prados are not suitable for use in our winter conditions.

Toyota cars have always been particularly popular among car enthusiasts in our country, which is especially noticeable in the Far East. But among the entire range of products of this automaker, the Land Cruiser Prado model occupies a special place.

Recently, the Prado body (J150) has become increasingly popular among buyers. Its popularity can only be compared with the Mitsubishi Pajero. However, even despite all the positive aspects, this car has a number of significant disadvantages. Fortunately, the development and release of this model has been going on for quite a long time, so consumers have had time to thoroughly study all its pros and cons, which greatly simplifies the choice for a potential purchase. It is about the shortcomings and weaknesses of this car that we will talk in this article.

Weaknesses of the 4th generation Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

Exaggeratedly, all the shortcomings of this model can be represented by the following list:

  • Problems with injectors;
  • Cooling system;
  • Transfer case;
  • Paintwork;
  • Body position control;
  • Starter;
  • Air suspension;
  • Oil seals.

Now let's look at some of them in more detail...

It can hardly be said that these parts fail very quickly and require constant replacement, but every 60 thousand kilometers they require cleaning. Since injectors for this machine are quite expensive, basic preventive maintenance will not be superfluous, especially if you take into account the quality of domestic fuel.

Cooling system

By 150 thousand mileage, this model has problems with coolant leaks from the radiator, pipes and pump. Due to the design features of the machine, you are unlikely to be able to carry out repairs yourself, so you will have to contact a service station. Depending on the service you choose, the cost of repairs will cost you about 20 thousand rubles.

Center lock actuator

In certain versions of the Toyota Prado 150, the transfer case actuator is considered a sore spot. This component often fails during frequent off-road driving in aggressive conditions. If the vehicle is operated in urban conditions and very carefully, then this will not be a problem. But if, when you turn on the lock, you feel a slight jolt and extraneous noise, this is a good reason to bargain with the seller.

Body position sensor

Around 100 thousand kilometers, a malfunction of the body position sensor often appears. Of course, the problem is not global, but it must be eliminated. This “jamb” manifests itself in the fact that the machine is always in the highest position. Replacing this element will cost the owner approximately 20 thousand.

Many people note the low quality of painting as a problem for this “Japanese”. For some owners, even after several months of starting to use the car, the paint on the hood and top of the roof begins to peel off and crack. That is why, when purchasing this car, pay attention to the condition of these body elements.

In some cases, after driving more than 100 thousand kilometers, the starter may need to be replaced. This problem does not apply to all cars of this model and the nature of its occurrence is still unclear. But the fact remains that for some owners, for no apparent reason, this unit fails. Moreover, this happens selectively and does not depend on the year of manufacture.

Air suspension

With aggressive and frequent off-road driving, pneumatic cylinders and the compressor may not withstand the loads and fail. Symptoms of an impending breakdown include raising the car to its maximum height for a long time, and also if the car sits motionless for a long time with the engine turned off, the ground clearance will decrease for no apparent reason. Replacing or repairing air suspension is a very expensive proposition, so when purchasing a car on the secondary market, have it fully diagnosed at a certified service station.

In general, the rubber products used on this machine have proven themselves to be of high quality. However, this does not apply to the seals in the gearbox. At mileage of 100 thousand or more, oil leakage from under this seal is often observed. The cost of resolving the issue is not very high, but the very fact of the presence of such a malfunction spoils the overall impression of the car.

What are other disadvantages of this model?

With aggressive driving and after driving more than 100 thousand kilometers, it may also be necessary to replace ball joints, stabilizer rods and bushings, CV joint boots, steering rack, and so on. However, it is worth understanding that all this does not happen at the same time, thereby giving Prado owners the opportunity to wisely allocate cash investments for the repair and maintenance of their vehicle.

Why is Prado better than Pajero?

When choosing a car for themselves, many people sooner or later come to a comparative analysis of the Toyota Prado 150 and Mitsubishi Pajero 4. We will also note some comparative aspects from the consumer’s point of view.

  1. The Prado has a larger windshield slope. This slightly reduces visibility, but it perfectly neutralizes the energy from hitting stones at high speed, directing it tangentially. Conclusion: windows crack less often on Toyotas;
  2. Pajero has a wider range of seat adjustments, including passenger ones. For “obese” or tall people this is quite an important plus;
  3. As many owners note, the Prado has a significantly more attractive interior trim with elements of plastic and leather. This combination does not hurt the eyes and does not cause irritation;
  4. The presence of a third row of seats retractable under the floor significantly increases the size of the luggage compartment. If we take into account the fact that both cars are positioned as cars for country holidays, then this point is very important and requires consideration;
  5. If we talk about driving characteristics, they are more or less similar. Although many experts note that the Prado has a better ride, which is achieved through the use of a more advanced suspension. On our roads it feels great and smoothly goes around bumps.

Disadvantages of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (J150)

  • High fuel consumption;
  • Large amount of transport tax;
  • High cost of spare parts;
  • Poor all-round visibility.

Conclusion.

If you are interested in a fairly high-quality SUV, albeit with some shortcomings and shortcomings, then feel free to choose the Toyota Prado 150. You need to understand that ideal cars do not exist and you can find a whole range of problems and shortcomings in any one. Everything depends only on the personal qualities of the end consumer and the purposes for which the machine will be used.

In terms of price-quality ratio, we can confidently say that this machine can be classified as a very worthy option for purchase due to its versatility and reliability, because it can be used to perform a wide variety of tasks in a variety of conditions, without worrying about serious breakdowns, who can stop her.

The main disadvantages and weaknesses of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 was last modified: November 26, 2018 by Administrator

The history of Prado began in 1987. The production of the first generation of the SUV continued until 1996. The car turned out to be smaller than the Land Cruiser 60 and occupied a previously empty niche in the company’s model range.

Production of the second generation began in 1996 and ended in 2002. The Prado shared a platform with the 4Runner model. In 1999, the car was restyled.

From 2002 to 2009, the third generation of the SUV occupied the assembly line, and in 2009, the new, fourth generation of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 was presented at the Frankfurt automobile exhibition.

The length of the SUV is 4,780 mm, width - 1,885, height - 1,890. The ground clearance of the Land Cruiser Prado 150 is 150 mm, its wheelbase is 2,790. The luggage compartment volume of the 5-seater version ranges from 621 to 1,934 liters, in The interior of the 7-seater version can be loaded with from 104 to 1,833 conventional liters of luggage.

The exterior of the Prado 150 suggests that designers (or, quite likely, marketers) were trying to find a “new face” that would be at once highly recognizable, a little (or a lot) aggressive and expensive.

The abundance of non-trivial elements and shapes, hypertrophied “bulges” above the wheel arches, slanted headlights and impressive dimensions suggest that the set goals have been achieved, but whether it all looks attractive is for the buyers to judge.

The interior of the Toyota Prado 150 has a completely different “mood”. The interior style is somewhat reminiscent of the family features of the Land Rover Discovery family (3rd and 4th generations). The design of the center console is dominated by regular geometric shapes, the dashboard is devoid of any pretentiousness, the digitization of the instrument panel scales is not too frequent, which, together with the moderately bright backlight, implies good readability, the steering wheel looks serious in an off-road manner and, according to its class, expensive. At the same time, the interior is absolutely not boring or simple.

Toyota dealers in Russia offer the Prado 150 with three engine options. The working volume of the first gasoline power unit is 2.7 liters, the engine has 4 cylinders arranged in a row, 16 valves. The maximum power provided is 163 hp. at 5,200 rpm, torque - 246 Nm at 3,800 rpm.

Technical characteristics of the second gasoline engine: displacement – 4.0 liters, 6-cylinder, V-shaped, 24-valve, maximum power – 282 hp. at 5,600 rpm, maximum torque - 387 Nm at 4,400 rpm.

The third engine is an in-line 4-cylinder 16-valve diesel engine with a displacement of 2.8 liters. The engine provides maximum power of 177 hp. at 3,400 rpm, maximum torque of 450 Nm is available in the crankshaft speed range from 1,600 to 2,400 rpm.

Two transmission options are available to potential buyers: a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed automatic. The drive in all variants is exclusively 4x4.

Today, dealers offer six levels of car equipment: Classic, Standard, Comfort, Elegance, Style, as well as 5- and 7-seater Lux versions.

Prices for the basic version of the Land Cruiser Prado 150 with a 2.7-liter engine and manual transmission in the Standard configuration start from 2,327,000 rubles. The list of installed equipment includes fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, audio system, standard alarm, immobilizer, as well as ABS, traction control, stability control, active head restraints and a set of seven airbags.

A seven-seater SUV in the Lux configuration with a 4.0-liter engine and automatic transmission will cost the buyer 3,913,000 rubles. For this money, the buyer will receive a car with xenon headlights, an adaptive lighting system, 18-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, three-zone climate control, cruise control, heated front seats, rain and light sensors, leather trim, CD- changer, navigation system, 4 cameras around the perimeter of the car, etc.

Updated Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2014

At the end of August 2013, the automaker presented an updated version of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2014-2015 SUV, European sales of which started in the fall.

Externally, the car received new head optics with LED sections, a modified radiator grille and taillights, as well as retouched bumpers. In addition, the updated Land Cruiser Prado 2015 has increased in size - its length has increased to 4,805 mm (+45), width - to 1,905 (+10), and height has decreased by 20 millimeters - to 1,825.

The restyled 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is still offered in five- and seven-seat versions, and a heated steering wheel, a multimedia system with a 7-inch display, a rear view camera and a blind spot monitoring system have been added to the list of options. And the retuned suspension is designed to improve comfort, and both its regular version and the electronically controlled Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System have undergone revisions.

In addition, in the interior of the SUV, the design of the instrument panel and center console has been revised, to which the control panel for the Multi-terrain Select off-road system has been placed. As for the power units, they remained the same for the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150, except that the power of the 3.0-liter modernized diesel engine was increased from 173 to 190 hp.

On August 17, Russia began accepting orders for the modernized Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 SUV, which received a completely new diesel engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, replacing the four- and five-speed automatic transmissions on all other versions.

On the outside, the 2016-2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado has remained virtually unchanged. Except that on cars in the Elegance version and above, roof rails and factory tinted rear windows appeared. And for interior decoration, an additional trim option with brown leather and aluminum inserts became available.

As for the engine, instead of the previous 3.0-liter KD series turbodiesel, producing 173 hp. and 410 Nm of torque, a completely new GD unit has arrived with a displacement of 2.8 liters and developing 177 forces and 450 Nm of thrust (previously this debuted on a pickup truck). The average fuel consumption in the combined cycle with it is 7.4 liters per hundred.

And thanks to the new transmission, gasoline engines also became a little more economical, while with the top-end 4.0-liter version of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2016, it began to accelerate from zero to hundreds in 8.8 seconds versus 9.2 seconds. previously.

The price of the updated SUV starts at 1,997,000 rubles (basic version with manual transmission), while for a modification with a new diesel engine they ask from 2,807,000 rubles. In the Prestige and Luxe trim levels, a system of assistance when leaving the parking lot in reverse appeared.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2015 photo

From August 17, Russian consumers had the opportunity to order the updated Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 2015-2016 model year. The modernized SUV received different technical equipment, as well as additional equipment in a number of trim levels. It should be noted that the Land Cruiser Prado 150 in a new body will be imported to Russia from Japan, since it recently became known that the agreement between Toyota and Sollers was terminated, on the basis of which the large-unit assembly of the car was carried out at the facilities of a joint venture in Vladivostok. From now on, the assembly of the model intended for the domestic market will be carried out at a plant in the Japanese city of Tahara.

Moving directly to the update, we draw your attention to the fact that it was local in nature and in no way affected the appearance of the Prado. The overall dimensions of the SUV also remained unchanged - its length is still 4780 mm, and its width and height are 1885 and 1845 mm, respectively. But what has really been revised is the engine range. The list of power units of the 2015-2016 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado included a completely new 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel engine of the GD family, which took the place of the 3-liter turbodiesel of the KD series. The four-cylinder engine is equipped with a Common Rail injection system, providing fuel at a pressure of up to 2200 bar. In this case, the injection itself occurs in several stages, which contributes to the most complete combustion of the mixture. The new engine also features developments such as a variable geometry turbine and a 32-bit controller that takes into account a whole range of parameters.

The result of the efforts of Toyota engineers was the following technical characteristics of the turbodiesel: power 177 hp. (at 3400 rpm) and torque 450 Nm (range 1600-2400 rpm). A more advanced design of the power plant has significantly reduced the level of noise and vibration that occurs during operation. At the same time, it was possible to achieve fuel consumption of 7.4 liters per 100 km in a combined driving cycle. Note that the Toyota Prado 150 2015-2016 will not be the first model that was lucky enough to get the new turbodiesel “four”. A little earlier, the unit had already tested the places under the hood and.

The other two engines prepared for the new Prado 150 are familiar to us from. This is a 2.7-liter inline-four with a maximum output of 163 hp. and a 4.0-liter V6 with 282 hp. Both engines run on gasoline and are equipped with distributed injection with variable valve timing.

Another technical innovation in the Toyota Prado 150 was the appearance of a 6-band automatic transmission, which is adapted to work with any of the three available engines. As an alternative, a time-tested 5-speed manual transmission is offered (installed only in conjunction with the “younger” 2.7-liter engine). The new automatic transmission added agility to the SUV, providing more intense acceleration when starting from a standstill. For example, a modification with a top-end 282-horsepower engine improved its dynamic performance by 0.4 seconds, i.e. to accelerate to 100 km/h it will now take 8.8 seconds instead of the previous 9.2 seconds. Also, albeit slightly, fuel efficiency has improved (consumption fell from 10.8 to 10.6 liters per 100 km).

Options and prices

The new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 2015-2016 model year received six equipment levels: Classic, Standard, Comfort, Elegance, Prestige and Luxury (5 or 7 seats).

The advantages and disadvantages of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 2018-2019 were identified based on reviews from real owners. More detailed pros and cons of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 2.8 diesel, as well as 4.0 and 2.7 with manual, automatic and 4x4 all-wheel drive can be found in the stories below:

Owner reviews

The Prado 150 is a cozy, affectionate and, most importantly, quite maneuverable car both in the city and off-road. There is no particular noise from the diesel engine, acceleration is acceptable in the city - quite enough. In general, the first emotions are positive.

The switches for some car control functions are inconveniently located; the steering wheel interferes with their visibility. I would like more information about the car to be displayed on the MFP, the screen seems to be large, but it is of little use. The front and rear cameras quickly become clogged with dirt, especially in bad weather.

Video review

A huge asset of this Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 is its suspension, which has been honed over the years - you can’t fault it! High-altitude passive and active safety.

Believe me, in my organization we use ten Pradikas, all from 2014, in 2 years they all have mileage from 50 to 80 t.km. The main DISEASE of this car is the brake discs - over time, when braking, and especially emergency or from a hill, they hit the steering wheel very unpleasantly. FOR ALL 10 CARS!

Replacement under warranty lasts for 30,000 km. On one car the pump suddenly died, on another the signal disappeared, on three the batteries died, the wiper blades need to be changed every year, but the price is the same as the original! Well, the price for maintenance at an official service station is not encouraging at all.

The back door is quite heavy, so the opening is not vertical, but horizontal, and on all cars it is loose, the play is especially audible on light off-road conditions.

I expected better. Firstly, the engine screams when accelerating, making your ears pop. Secondly, the luggage compartment was not thought out by the designers - there was nowhere to even put a fire extinguisher, so I had to buy a tool box.

In a car for 2,175,000 rubles, the seat adjustment is worse than the Zhiguli of the first model, but the steering wheel is adjustable with memory. At a speed of 110 km/h, the hood vibrates, it seems that it is made of foil.

At 14,000 km, something started knocking in the suspension and began to give a strong vibration to the steering wheel. The dealer's service revealed that the stabilization mechanism had failed. The front right parking sensor works when it wants.

When the engine is running cold, a loud knocking sound is heard, whether the valves are knocking or the knocking is coming from the injectors, but when the engine revs at high speed for 20 seconds, the knocking disappears. For that kind of money I would not recommend purchasing this car.

Where can I buy?

One big drawback of the Land Cruiser 150, which I learned about literally not long ago and which negates all the advantages of the car - the body begins to RUST. The car is less than a year old.

As OD states, this is supposedly a disease of all Toyotas; the Prado has a hood and a fifth door. They are discussing this on the Prado forum. I hoped that a car assembled in Japan would be insured against many problems, but it turned out that this was not the case. In a word - disappointed.

Toyota could not save on a car that costs almost two million and install navigation on all modifications - after all, it’s a full-fledged jeep on a frame, its purpose is to travel on roads outside populated areas, somehow it’s even inferior!

And bluetooth sees my Android every time it wants, maybe this is the nature of the car - for me this is a sign of cheapness! And the clutch disc should not burn at 10,000 miles in a car of this class. If it burns again, then this is an obvious structural defect!

A good car for the village. Purely for those who do not want to drive a pickup truck around the village without roads, then the passenger Prado is suitable. It has comfort only in terms of cross-country ability and ergonomics. All! But if you drive around the city, it’s not the same. The car is wobbly, barely drives, and the cabin is noisy, as if there were no windows inside. The Lada Vesta is even quieter and softer.

So the advantages of a car are reliability and maneuverability. Disadvantages: hard, noisy and rolly in corners. In short, purely for the village.

I have a manual, the engine is only 2.7 liters, but I’m happy with the car. Well, yes, it’s not a catapult, but it’s quiet on the highway and holds the road like a ship. It goes along secondary routes in the Moscow, Vladimir and Ivanovo regions without any complaints. The chairs are comfortable and your back doesn't get tired.

When overtaking, yes, you have to wait longer and think twice, but, on the other hand, is there any need to rush? And so, whether 90 km/h or 130 km/h, it handles equally confidently. I set reliability and repairs to 4 because I don’t know how much this repair will cost. I took Casco with a franchise, it cost 75 thousand, Osago - more than 20, but with unlimited drivers. Consumption on average is 15 liters.

Other advantages I would like to note are the spacious interior, large trunk and acoustics. As for the disadvantages, I would probably prefer to take an automatic, since with a manual on gasoline and 163 horses for two tons of weight, traffic jams are a chore.
