The Opel Astra is a small family car (the “C” class niche in the European category), which is announced in two 5-door versions (hatchback and station wagon), as well as a 4-door sedan. The model has a stylish design, competitive technical features and an excellent level of practicality. All.

The car is aimed at buyers who want to have a modern car, but at an affordable price. Not long ago, the new fifth generation Opel Astra (K) was released. This happened in the fall of 2015 during an international exhibition in Frankfurt. Interestingly, Opel decided to declassify its new product ahead of schedule at the beginning of June.

The vehicle retained the proportions of the previous model, however, it became brighter, lighter and more technologically advanced in all respects. Following the official presentation, the hatchback should reach the shelves of European dealers, but the car is unlikely to reach our customers. This is all due to the recent departure of the brand from the Russian market.

Car history

First generation Astra F (1991-1997)

The debut family of Opel Astra compact cars has been produced since July 1991. In the fall of 1994, the vehicle underwent minor improvements. The car was produced in Poland under the name Astra Classic. The Opel Astra (F) serves as the successor to the Opel Kadett (E) and is the sixth version in the Kadett/Astra series.

After the 1994 update, they began to produce a modernized version of the Astra (F), which received improved corrosion protection. It’s nice that the company took into account the wishes of customers and allowed the installation of a four-speed automatic gearbox from the Japanese company Aisin AW as an option.

Like other Opel cars that were produced in previous years, the body of the Astra (F) did not have a zinc protective coating, however, the quality of the paintwork was quite good. This point allowed the company to provide a guarantee for its products for 6 years. It concerned the body, and to be more precise, its invulnerability to rust.

In addition to the 3- and 5-door body, the Opel Astra had a sedan and station wagon version. A 3-door station wagon was produced in small quantities (this version did not have glazing). It is also very rare to find an Opel Astra model in a convertible body, which has been produced since 1993 at the company's facilities.

A 3-door station wagon was produced in small quantities

As mentioned above, 3 years after the presentation of the car, modernization was carried out. Thanks to the update, new turn signals and a radiator grille began to be installed. If earlier the turn signals were orange, then restyling changed them to white.

The appearance of the Opel Astra (F) of the 1st family is called calm and a little classic. It would not be superfluous to note that this model does not have an inflated price tag, so many, when choosing inexpensive cars, give preference to a European rather than an or.

It is very pleasant that after the 1994 update, all Opel Astra (F) even in the basic version had hydraulic power steering. In addition, the minimum configuration had front electric windows.

Opel Astra Convertible

The basic music system of a German car has 4 speakers. Even then, the German company was seriously concerned about the level of safety, equipping its models with belt tensioners with squibs, which, coupled with the front Airbags, available in the minimum configuration, significantly increased the level of safety in the first generation Opel Astra (F).

If we talk about the ventilation system, then it had air recirculation, blocking the path of outside air inside. Already in the following 1995, the debut version had a new front panel. The “German”’s interior had a clear and understandable dashboard, which displayed the main data of the car.

The steering wheel was comfortable and large. To the left of it there was a lighting “twist” with an adjustment function, as well as keys for turning on the front and rear fog lighting. The seats installed in front are quite comfortable and have good lateral support.

The center console received a small “pocket”, at the end of which information about the time, date and temperature outside was displayed. The back of the rear sofa, according to the owners of the first generation Opel Astra, turned out to be a bit short. The sedan version was equipped with a luggage compartment that could hold 500 liters. The three and five-door hatchback could boast only 360 liters of usable space.

From the very beginning, only gasoline power units with a volume of 1.4 to 2.0 liters were installed on German cars. All engines had an electronic fuel supply system, however, some markets could see the first carburetor engines, such as the 14NV 1.4 liter, which developed 75 horsepower. They began equipping cars with a diesel power plant 3 months after the car was released.

Initially, only one diesel engine was available - 17YD 1.7 liter, developing 57 “horses”. The transmission can be a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic (Aisin).

It is noteworthy that the Opel Astra (F) I generation had a wide range of active and passive safety systems. During the design of the machine using a computer, specialists were able to calculate the rigidity elements. The body was distinguished by its torsional strength. Installed height-adjustable seat belts.

The seats, along with the seat belt anchors, are designed to prevent the person sitting under the belt from slipping. Astra (F) had an optional airbag for the owner. At the end of 1994, 2 airbags began to be installed as standard. Electronics, in the form of an anti-lock braking system, could be installed optionally until the very end of the car's production.

As for the suspension, it was moderately soft and comfortable, and with the help of anti-roll bars front and rear, the cars held the road well. An independent McPherson-type suspension was installed in front, and a semi-independent one in the rear, where springs and shock absorbers were installed separately.

The steering wheel had a rack and pinion mechanism and was distinguished by acceptable information content. As a braking system, disc devices were installed in front, and a drum mechanism was installed in the rear.

Second generation Astra G (1998-2004)

In 1997, during the next Frankfurt Motor Show, the second Opel Astra family was presented for the first time, receiving the index (G). It’s interesting that they decided not to take anything from the previous generation - it was a newly designed car.

Production of the 2nd generation Opel Astra was stopped in 2004, but the car continued to be sold in Russia until the first half of 2005. This option is called more “compartment” in terms of design. The novelty began its life as a 3- and 5-door C-segment hatchback, there was also a station wagon, a convertible, a coupe and a well-known sedan.

A fully galvanized body is one of the factors that made the 2nd Astra family a revolutionary car. The chassis, ergonomics, design, body, they decided to radically reconsider everything and design it almost from scratch. They decided not to change only the ideology of the model - the possibility of configuration for any stylistic decision, character, temperament and financial condition of a person.

The production of Astras in coupe and convertible bodies was carried out by a company from Italy - Bertone. The drag coefficient of the German car in the “sedan” version was 0.29. The convertible with the roof down received only a slightly increased figure - 0.32.

The cone-shaped style of the 2nd generation Opel Astra has striking corporate features that can clearly be recognized as vehicles from Rüsselsheim. The result is a truly stylish car. The soft curves of the surfaces, which contrast with the edges and lines, do not lose the integrity of previous Astra models.

The body also has sporty notes. They decided to move the windshield forward by 120 millimeters, which made it possible to emphasize the wedge-shaped body type, visually reducing the dimensions of the hood. The salon turned out to be simple and laconic. Among the innovations are the presence of a liquid crystal display of the on-board computer and an airbag for the passenger.

If we compare the new product with its “cramped” predecessor, the 2nd generation Opel Astra turned out to be more spacious. It often happens that due to significant temperature changes inside and outside the car, the windshield may crack. Even the company management itself recognized the problem of insufficient glass strength and quite often replaced the front glass under warranty.

The designers decided to borrow the pedal assembly from (B), and this means that in the event of a serious collision, the pedals are disconnected, and this, in turn, does not give them the opportunity to “go” into the cabin. The basic version of the Opel Astra (G) has a driver's airbag, however, you can often find 4 and even 6 Airbags.

The luggage compartment of the German-made 3- and 5-door hatchback received 370 liters of usable space. The sedan holds 460 liters, and the record volume belongs to the station wagon - 480 liters. However, that’s not all; if necessary, you can significantly increase this figure to 1,500 liters if you fold the rear backrests.

The list of power units includes economical gasoline engines, in the amount of 6 copies, and a couple of engines running on diesel fuel. The gasoline range starts from 1.2-liter (65/48 horsepower) to 2.0-liter (136/100 “horses”). Such power plants comply with Euro 3 emission standards, which came into force in 2001.

Diesel engines received a volume of 1.7 liters, designed for 68 and 50 horsepower, as well as 2.0 liters, which develop 82 and 60 “horses”. The newest division of ECOTEC engines has 1.2 and 1.8-liter gasoline units and a 2.0-liter engine. They are distinguished by a four-valve timing mechanism and direct fuel injection.

Opel Astra Eco4 engine

On top of that, the 2.0-liter version gets two balancer shafts to improve its smooth operation. The synchronizer is a 4-speed (Japanese company Aisin) or 5-speed manual transmission with a hydraulic clutch drive. The chassis structure has received major improvements.

The front uses aluminum McPherson struts and a tubular subframe (on which the engine is mounted), and the rear has a torsion beam. Supplementary features include springs, gas-filled shock absorbers and the DSA system. The braking system has disc brakes, and in front they have a ventilation function.

Standard equipment includes ABS from another well-known German company Bosch. The Opel Astra (G) turned out to be actually practical and safe. The company's employees were able to work out the security structure. When a vehicle collides with an obstacle, the power unit goes to the bottom, and thanks to the directional deformation of the body, it is possible to save the necessary living space inside the car.

In the event of a side impact, passengers are protected by power beams hidden under the door trim. The built-in protection system allows you to save lives in critical situations. It has two full-size airbags for the driver and passenger, airbags in the backs of the front seats, and pyrotechnic seat belt tensioners. By using improved quality steel, it was possible to almost double the body's torsional and bending rigidity.

Third generation Astra H (2004-2009)

The third version of the Opel Astra was officially presented in 2004 in Istanbul. They decided to assign it an index (H). The new model lasted on the automobile market until 2010, after which it gave way to the new Opel Astra (J).

The production of the third generation was launched at a Polish enterprise, and since 2008 in Russia. The competitors of the Opel Astra (H) are the KIA Cerato I , Mazda 3 of the first version, Chevrolet Lacetti and other vehicles produced in past years.

The body range of the German car included a five-door hatchback, a three-door GTC hatchback, and an Astra TwinTop coupe-convertible. The director of the Opel design studio in Rüsselsheim, Friedhelm Engler, who also worked on the Opel Corsa and other vehicles of the company, worked on the appearance.

If we talk about the dynamic “shoulder” line and streamlined roof, a wide base with small overhangs, stylish headlights with lanterns and relief contours of the arches, then they can make this car one of the most attractive players in the golf class. It is also important that the third generation Opel Astra (H) is a rather “free” option, suitable for both men and women.

It's not just because of the design. “The five-door is utilitarian, despite its bright and catchy originality. The vehicle is simple and undemanding to drive, and the interior decoration will not get boring. It is very funny that the drag coefficient of the Opel Astra (H) did not decrease, like the previous model, but increased.

Now this figure was 0.32 versus 0.29 for the old version. In addition, the new product has become 60 kilograms heavier, and the wheelbase has increased by 8 millimeters. In addition to the popular hatchback version, they also produced a sedan, which was also liked by many car enthusiasts. The body of the German vehicle was covered with a protective layer of zinc, however, based on feedback from the owners, questions about the quality of the paint still arose.

Opel Astra TwinTop

The interior decoration is made in German style. The center console is not loaded with buttons, and the dashboard, made in the same style as the hood, is “forked” with a kind of “keel”. Regarding the upholstery materials, they are soft and pleasant to the touch. Separately, you can enjoy the door panels, which are covered with faux leather and stitched with stylish white threads.

Thanks to the comfortable seats of the 3rd generation Opel Astra, you can easily tune in to the trip, relax and calm down. The pedals are soft and easy to move. The steering wheel is electrically power-assisted.

There is enough free space, but nothing more. The luggage compartment volume of the sedan and station wagon versions is surprisingly the same - 490 liters. The five-door hatchback received 375 liters, and the Opel Astra H GTC version received 340 liters of usable space. Only the convertible version has the smallest trunk - 205 liters.

From 2004 to 2008, the German car was equipped with gasoline engines with the following technical characteristics:

  • 1.4 liters (75 “horses);
  • 1.6 (105 horsepower);
  • 1.8 (125 horsepower).

There was also a 1.7-liter diesel version, rated at 101 horsepower. When restyling took place (in 2007), production continued with engines:

  • 1.4 (90 horsepower),
  • 1.6 (105 “horses”
  • 1.8 (140 “hooves”).

The diesel side was represented by two diesel engines - a CDTI 1.7-liter, developing 125 horsepower, and a 1.3-liter, producing 90 horsepower. All gasoline installations use a belt in the gas distribution mechanism, which needs to be replaced every 90,000 - 110,000 kilometers.

A separate “individual” is considered to be the OPC version, representing the sports model Opel Astra (N). It has a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine capable of producing 240 horsepower.

Such “engines” work together with mechanical, robotic and automatic transmissions. They can be installed on any body at the request of the buyer. All torque is transmitted from the box only to the front wheels. The suspension turned out to be collected and a little stiff, which is well reflected in fast turns by the absence of rolls and the quick reaction of the chassis to steering wheel actions.

Opel Astra (H) sedan

There is an independent McPherson-type suspension in front, and a semi-independent torsion bar in the rear. As mentioned above, the steering is electrically power-assisted. The braking system is represented by ventilated front disc devices and rear disc mechanisms.
A version of the Opel Astra Family was also produced - representing a sedan body and an Opel Astra Family Station Wagon, in a station wagon body. The basic equipment of the Essentia hatchback has:

  • Front and side airbags;
  • Fog lights;
  • Electric windows;
  • Power steering wheel;
  • Heated mirrors;
  • Air conditioning;
  • Audio system;
  • Central locking;
  • Alarm;
  • Immobilizer.

This version has a 1.6-liter 115-horsepower engine and a 5-speed manual transmission.

Fourth generation Astra J (2009-2014)

The fourth family was demonstrated for the first time during the Frankfurt exhibition in 2009. The “first-born” model was a 5-door hatchback. When the summer of 2012 arrived, this version, along with all representatives of “Generation J”, underwent a minor restyling.

Appearance

It's no secret that German specialists are distinguished by their precision and pedantry, which can be seen in the appearance of the car. The headlights resemble eagle eyes. It's nice that they have LED garland, which has become very fashionable today.

It was possible to achieve an elegant appearance for the fourth generation Opel Astra Jay with the help of a squat shape and A-pillars that flow smoothly from the hood. To create the impression of lightness and not “sporty power”, the design team decided to equip the model with a wide air intake under the front bumper, and also emphasize the power of the shoulder line.

This made it possible to bring some revitalization to the exterior of the car. You can also highlight the demonstrative stamping element in the form of a blade at the rear doors, as well as the curve going upward and a visual transition to the rear pillar.

Such moments made it possible to create the appearance of the boundaries of the interior and visually define dynamism and perspective, giving the rear wheel arches a massive appearance. The rear of the Opel Astra (J) is recognizable only by the lights, which have a consistent style in the shape of a double wing.

Salon

Turning your attention to the interior of the “German”, you can notice all the main advantages and disadvantages that are common to all cars of this brand. German specialists worked it out well. There is no mixture of different stylistic solutions, no clutter, an abundance of combinations of materials, leather-like textures, various mismatched inserts - everything is done in a neat and coherent style.

As for the dashboard, it looks quite simple, but at the same time stylish. Expressiveness is enhanced by aluminum-look inserts on the steering wheel, doors and center console. But there are complaints about the quality of execution of some elements.

For example, the trim of the doors and dashboard received inserts made of oak plastic, which is a little rough. The glove compartment lid does not close tightly, producing a slight play. Fabric upholstery in some places may already lose its “marketable” appearance even before sale. The center console has an on-board computer screen, a music control unit and 2-zone climate control.

What was a little surprising was the introduction there of keys for turning on/off stabilization systems, a heated steering wheel function, turning on and off parking sensors, and even a button for turning on the sports mode. I'm pleased with the build quality. For example, the door closes quietly and softly, which is not typical for this class of car.

If early models had poor noise insulation, then the 4th generation has already gotten rid of this problem. The company decided to invest considerable funds to purchase improved sound insulation, which is easy to notice if you look at the doors and seals in the doorways. Among other things, I would like to highlight unusual “climate” deflectors that can dissipate air flows as much as possible.

The Opel Astra Jay sports seats serve as an excellent example of how you need to worry about the level of comfort of the people sitting in the car.

There are a lot of buttons, so you will have to figure out what and how, as well as get used to them. Under them there are compartments for storing the phone with a cigarette lighter socket and support for a USB connector and AUX input. The automatic selector was placed next to it, which borders on the parking brake on/off button.

Thanks to the installation of an electronic handbrake, it was possible to free up space for a compartment used as a cup holder. There is an armrest. Generally speaking, the German specialists have “stuffed” the car with enough pleasant elements. I especially wanted to say about the illumination of the interior decoration.

The door handles, together with the gearbox selector, received a red backlight, and if you activate the sport mode, the entire “tidy” changes its color. It all looks really cool, especially in the dark - the hatchback becomes cozy, romantic and at the same time aggressive.

It would not be possible to say that there is a lot of free space in the hatchback, despite the thinner back of the front seat and the increased width of the passenger space. The second row of seats received enough free space, which provides an opportunity to feel more comfortable, but nothing more.

The rear seat cushion is placed too low, causing real discomfort. The luggage compartment of the Opel Astra (J) received 370 liters of usable space, but if necessary, the rear seat backs can be folded, which will provide 1,235 liters.

The trunk is very functional and practical. It has hooks for securing cargo, lighting, a removable shelf, a storage compartment with tools under a dense raised floor, as well as comfortable handles and more. What the Germans did not take into account was the large loading height.

Specifications

The fourth generation has engines with power from 95 to 180 horsepower. Five motors from this list are supplied to the Russian market. The gasoline line is represented by a 1.4-liter 100-horsepower and a 1.6-liter 115-horsepower engine. In the city, fuel consumption ranges from 8.3-8.7, and on the highway from 5.1-5.3 liters per hundred.

The first hundred kilometers is reached by the weakest engine in 11.9 seconds. These power units have turbocharged versions from 140 to 180 horsepower. The 140-horsepower version does not require much gasoline, compared to the “younger” versions: in the city from 8.0-9.1, outside the city from 5.2-5.4 liters per 100 km.

Engine Opel Astra J

The most powerful option in the city “eats” about 9.9 liters of gasoline, and on the highway 5.6. It can reach 100 km/h in just 9 seconds. A 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine is provided, producing 160 horsepower. Such installations work together with 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions, as well as with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The chassis, which operates using a mechatronic system, was installed for the first time in the Opel Astra (J). At the front there is a standard suspension with McPherson struts, and at the rear there is a semi-independent beam combined with a Watt device. With this suspension it is possible to provide solid agility and stability during turns, while maintaining comfort.

The designers equipped the “German” with the FlexRide adaptive suspension (installed optionally), which has 3 operating modes: Standart, Sport, and Tour (comfort). Such electronics allow you to change the settings of the suspension, power steering and the sensitivity of the gas pedal.

Safety

Since the car is positioned as a family car, the level of safety must be appropriate. Looking ahead, I would like to say that the Opel engineering team was able to take care of this. There are 4 airbags, curtain airbags (optional), Isofix child seats, ABS, EBD, ESP, HHC.

Based on the crash tests passed by Euro-NCAP, the model deservedly received its 5 stars for safety.

Price and options There are 3 fixed configurations available for our customers: Essentia, Enjoy and Cosmo. The basic version in 2012 was priced at 599,900 rubles.

Fifth generation Astra K (2017-present)

The world display of the latest, fifth, family of Opel Astra 2016-2017 took place only in the fall of 2015 in the German city of Frankfurt. The new product will be produced at factories in England and Poland. The vehicle was able to maintain the ratios of the previous generation, however, it became brighter, lighter and much more technologically advanced in all respects.

Exterior

The appearance of the Opel Astra 5 has many stylistic features that are similar to the conceptual version of the Monza and the “younger” Corsa of the latter family. If previously there was a conservative look, now there are bright and bold design lines, along with sharp edges.

The nose of the five-door Opel Astra (K) hatchback has stylish lighting technology (IntelliLUX LED matrix headlights can be installed as a separate option) and a sculpted bumper with pronounced aerodynamic shapes.

Interestingly, the optional installation of LED headlights involves the placement of 8 LED elements in each headlight, which work together with the Opel Eye camera located in the nose area. Continuing the theme of matrix headlights, using an electronic unit they are able to analyze data from the camera and adjust the length and saturation of the light beam depending on the position on the road and the presence of other cars on the road surface.

The Opel Astra (K) 2017 fog lights have new technologies and are distinguished by their ability to penetrate heavy fog, which significantly increases safety while driving.

The exterior of the “German”, which represents the interests of Opel in the very competitive niche of the C class, exudes dynamism and pressure, multiplied by modern automotive production technologies. From any angle, the hatchback looks like a modern and playful car.

The body is in complete harmony with sharp ribs and stampings, bright aerodynamic fairings and stylish lighting equipment, as well as refined lines and curves. The front end has an elongated hood and a voluminous radiator grille with chrome inserts.

The aerodynamic front bumper houses fog lights of a non-standard rectangular type. The dynamic appearance is manifested by expressive ribs on the sides, an actively sloping roof and blackened rear pillars, creating the effect of a “floating roof”.

The doors installed at the back with an ascending window sill line that tends to rise upward are very impressive. Adding charm to the already mentioned elements are external mirrors mounted on strong legs, an attractive rib placed at the level of the door handles, correct radii of the wheel arches, neat design of the rear part, which is decorated with modern pointed lampshades, which also received LED filling.

Along the upper edge of the glass, you can see a chrome trim. The Germans decided to install 17-inch alloy wheels with a modified design. The rear of the Opel Astra (K) 2016 is the subject of many disputes and disagreements, since some are satisfied with it and even impressed by it, while others are not.

On the line that connects the rear to the roof, there are narrow LED optics. The upper part of the body has a small spoiler. The rear bumper turned out to be of good quality, thanks to the smooth stamping lines. The luggage compartment lid is compact.

Interior

The interior decoration of the 2016 Opel Astra (K) has no less grandiose transformations than the exterior - almost everything is new here, from the design to the finishing materials. The driver is immediately presented with a “tight” steering wheel with a three-spoke design, as well as a scattering of control elements.

Behind it you can see the analogue instrument panel, where there is a large multi-function display located between the speedometer and tachometer. The steering column has height and reach adjustments. In the central part of the hatchback interior there is an IntelliLink multimedia complex with an 8-inch touch screen (supports Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto).

He was able to incorporate an abundance of physical keys and switches, which made it possible to rid the dashboard of unnecessary workload. The climate inside the “German” car is regulated using a separate unit that has a pair of massive “handles” and keys.
It is worth admitting that the standard equipment is a little simpler - there is a regular radio, air conditioning and a simplified steering wheel.

According to the German automaker, the new product has high-quality finishing materials that correspond to more prestigious cars. So that the driver and front passenger can sit comfortably inside, high-quality anatomical seats with a pronounced profile are provided.

Depending on the selected equipment, the seats can have up to 18 settings, ventilation, heating and massage functions. The Opel Astra (K) salon demonstrates new door cards with comfortable armrests and compact handles. The plastic on the dashboard is soft and pleasant to the touch, the plastic does not creak, and the gaps fit perfectly.

For rear passengers, the designers have increased the free space (by 35 millimeters), and as a separate option, you can install the function of heating the rear sofa. However, all the same, sitting with three of us will no longer be so comfortable. There is no central armrest and there are no air deflectors, but a USB port can be installed as a separate option.

The luggage compartment turned out to be ideal in shape, and its volume was 370 liters. If necessary, you can fold the rear backrests flush with the floor, which will provide 1,210 liters of usable space. The “spare spare” was placed in a compartment under the floor. It is small in size and installed in the center. Electric drive is also not provided.

Technical characteristics of Astra K

Power unit

For the fifth family of the German hatchback, they provided for the presence of Ecotec diesel and gasoline engines with a capacity of 95 to 200 horsepower. The list begins with a 3-cylinder petrol version with a volume of 1.0 liters, which has turbocharging and direct injection.

It develops 105 “horses” at 5,500 rpm and 170 Nm of peak thrust in the range from 1,800–4,250 rpm. The power unit consumes about 4.3-4.4 liters per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle.

Next comes a naturally aspirated four-cylinder 1.4-liter engine, developing 100 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 130 Nm of thrust starting at 4,400 rpm. The “appetite” of this option is about 5.4 liters for every 100 kilometers in highway/city mode.

Third on the list is the performance version, which is a full-aluminum 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with a volume of 1.4 liters, which received direct fuel supply. This “engine” has several levels of boost. In the “junior” version, it develops 125 “horses” at 5,600 rpm and 230 Nm of torque at 2,000–4,000 rpm.

The “senior” version received 150 “hooves” and 230 Nm with a similar number of revolutions. This “engine” consumes 5.1–5.5 liters in medium mode. The 5th generation Astra also has a four-cylinder turbocharged 1.6-liter diesel engine in 3 boost versions - 95, 110 and 136 hp. (280, 300 and 320 Nm respectively). Such an engine consumes from 3.5 to 4.6 liters of diesel fuel, which is a rather modest figure.

In addition, for the German hatchback they decided to introduce improved engines that run on both gasoline and diesel fuel. The volume will be 1.6 liters, and such power units will produce up to 200 “horses”.

A car with a 1.0-liter engine is synchronized with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed robotic gearbox. This merger promises the hatchback to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 11.2–12.7 seconds, and the top speed will be at 200 kilometers per hour. And for the 1.4-liter naturally aspirated unit, they provided only one mechanical 5-speed gearbox, which accelerates the car to the first hundred in 12.3 seconds, and the “maximum speed” is 185 kilometers per hour.

Turbocharged aluminum engines work with two gearboxes. For the “junior” they provided a 6-speed manual, and for the “senior” there was also a 6-speed automatic transmission. You can accelerate to 100 km/h in 8.3–9.5 seconds, and the top speed will be 205–215 kilometers per hour.

For the diesel version, a 6-speed manual and an automatic transmission are installed as a pair. The first hundred is achieved in 9.6–12.7 seconds, and the maximum speed is 185–205 km/h. All engines transmit all torque only to the front wheels.

Chassis

The new five-door version of the German car of the 5th family was built on a completely new modular platform D2XX, which underlies the newest generation of Chevrolet Cruze. The new modular “trolley” made it possible to reduce the weight of the load-bearing body of the vehicle by 20 percent, and the weight of the chassis by 50 kilograms, when compared with previous generation models.

As a result, the curb weight of the 2016-2017 Opel Astra (K) was 120-200 kilograms less than the Astra (J) version. The exact weight depends on the selected configuration and level of equipment. As on all current models, there is an independent McPherson-type suspension in front, and a transverse beam in the rear, where there are shock absorbers, springs and an anti-roll bar.

The steering is electrically power assisted. The braking system received disc brakes on all wheels (the front ones support the ventilation function), as well as modern electronic “assistants”.

Safety Astra K

Opel specialists developed the security system independently. There are 9 systems and all of them fully meet modern criteria. The systems function a little differently when compared to previous versions. For example, the electronics that monitor blind spots are based not on cameras, but on radar sensors.

There is an active system that can monitor the markings on the road. In the event that the vehicle leaves the lane, the system will begin to steer, returning the car to its place. Based on practice, the electronics function reliably. Opel Astra (K) is capable of independently avoiding collisions. The car is able to recognize a dangerous approach, and at speeds up to 40 km/h it can independently brake without the participation of the owner.

When the hatchback moves at increased speed, a sound signal is emitted, to which the driver must respond. If this does not happen, the electronics begin to slow down at the last moment. As a result, even if you cannot avoid the collision, the harm will be minimal due to the fact that the force of the impact will not be the same due to the reduced speed.

The operation of systems that monitor markings on the road, recognize obstacles on the move, recognize road signs, and LED headlights operate based on data from a camera installed in the upper part of the front glass.

Passive safety includes the use of high-strength steel, a rigid safety cage, elements with programmed deformation, crushable elements and parts with predetermined trajectories of collision force propagation. There are also seatbelt pretensioners for front-mounted seats, curtains and airbags.

The Pedal Release Service (PRS) automatically releases the pedal mounts to help prevent injury to the driver's feet and legs in the event of a serious accident. During EuroNCAP tests, the fifth generation received a well-deserved 5 stars for ensuring the safety of not only the driver and passengers sitting next to them, but also other road users. We are pleased with the presence of automated parking and a blind spot monitoring system.

Price and configuration of Astra K

Unfortunately, the new German-made product will not reach the Russian market, since the company has officially decided to leave the domestic market. But our neighbors in Ukraine will sell models. There are two trim levels: Essentia and Enjoy . In Europe, the 5th generation Opel Astra (K) hatchback can be purchased from 17,260 to 21,860 euros.

The basic equipment included fabric interior trim, two electric windows, a CD player with six speakers, power steering, ABS, ESP, front and side airbags, cruise control, air conditioning and a folding rear sofa backrest.

“Top” options already have front and rear cameras, electrically adjustable front seats, LED headlights and rear lights, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and gear knob , front armrest and so on.

Comparison with competitors

The golf class is a fairly densely populated segment, so the Opel Astra has plenty of rivals. This includes the one that has overtaken in sales, as well as the Chevrolet Cruze, the founder of the class, the Hyundai i30, Honda Civic, and other vehicles.

On the used car market, the Opel Astra G can be defined as one of the most popular models. This phenomenon is not accidental, since the second generation Astra has a reputation as a reliable and inexpensive vehicle to maintain.

The Astra "G" was released in 1998, replacing the Astra "F", a controversial model that caused many problems for Opel and undermined the brand's credibility as a manufacturer of rugged and reliable cars. Unlike its predecessor, the Opel Astra “G” is a convincing and tough competitor in the compact class with the leader in the form of the VW Golf IV. The model was produced until 2004 and is available as a sedan with four doors, a hatchback with 4 and 2 doors, a 5-door station wagon, and later a coupe and convertible from the Italian design studio Bertone joined the line. Thanks to full galvanization, Opel's notorious rust problem has been eliminated. In the body of the Astra “G” it is difficult to find places with corrosion and their presence suggests more that the car was in an accident and was poorly repaired.

Engine

It has a wide range of petrol and diesel engines. Gasoline 1.2 (65 hp), 1.4 (90 hp), 1.6 (101 hp or 75 hp), 1.8 (from 115 to 125 hp), 2.0 (136hp) 2.2 (147hp). All 16 valve, with the exception of 1.6, 75 hp. (after 2001 it became 85 hp). Diesels 1.7 (from 68 to 75 hp) developed by Isuzu, 2.0 (82 hp) and 2.2 (125 hp).

In 2001, Astra “G” underwent reconstruction, during which defects identified in the model in the first year of production were corrected. The spacious interior, soft suspension and comfortable seats provide good comfort for the driver and passengers, even in the version with 2 doors. The station wagon (Caravan) offers up to 1,500 liters of interior luggage space. The level of security is also satisfactory. The standard Astra has ABS and four airbags.

Earlier models often had irritating creaks and rattles from the dashboard, but the materials used in the interior were of good quality. A gap around the airbag on the steering wheel, significant wear on the pedal pads, and a worn gear lever trapezoid indicate that the car has traveled a lot. Sellers often restore these areas, so look closely for wear on other parts. Be wary of diesel or gas powered models as their mileage may be much higher than the car dealer claims.

Over time, the plastic on the headlights turns yellow. If you come across one where the lights are too bright, they have most likely changed, this could be a sign that the car has been in an accident. Original factory headlights from Hella.

A wide range of engines provides a large selection of Opel Astra models.

Petrol "Ekotek" with 16 valves. Equipped with an ERG valve that recirculates gases and a variety of sensors to reduce emissions. Many owners complain about ECOTEK engines due to constant problems with the ERG or some kind of sensor. In general, the engine is reliable, well balanced and silent. The problem is the high oil consumption on 1.6 liter 101 hp engines; in some examples it reaches a liter per 1000 km. The defect was recorded in versions after 2000, and is also present in the 105 horsepower engine. Fuel consumption is about 9.5-10 liters in the city and 6-6.5 outside the city.

A good choice is 1.8 - 16V with 116 or 125 hp. The engine has proven itself to be trouble-free and fast, and fuel consumption is identical to 1.6.

If you decide to install gas equipment on an Ecotek engine, it must be injection.

Very reliable but rare 1.6 with 8 valves. It is cheaper to maintain, quite simple and hassle-free.

If you are a fan of sporty style and high fuel consumption cannot scare you, focus on 2.0 and 2.2 liter gasoline engines, and the 2.2 is equipped with a chain drive.

Quite common is the 1.4-16V (90 hp) engine, which was installed on inexpensive versions. Due to the low power, the engine is driven at high speeds, fuel consumption is almost identical to 1.6 and 1.8. For this reason, there is a risk of encountering a “dead” engine.

Diesel engines are also a good choice, but there is a risk of running into an example with unknown mileage. In the West, owners of diesel cars very often drive from 300 to 400,000 km before they fall into the hands of their local car dealers. The Isuzu 1.7 and 2.0 engine and opelskite 2.2DTL (both with chain) provide good dynamics with indecently low consumption. The problems are caused by the oil pump, which is controlled electronically. The problem is the oil cooler, which over time mixes the antifreeze with the oil. So be sure to check the condition of the antifreeze for oil.

Problems generation Opel Astra

There are several common problems that all representatives of the “G” generation Astra have:

Fogging and humidity inside the body - the air recirculation control flap inside the car often jams. It remains closed, stopping the flow of fresh air from outside to prevent the formation of moisture. Before purchasing, check with the engine running and press the button on the dashboard. It is also possible that the cabin filter becomes dirty, but the consequences are the same - fogging.

Due to high humidity, electrical wiring and electronic components are weak points.

The generator fails, so before purchasing it would be a good idea to check the battery charge; spare parts for the generator are expensive and repairs are difficult.

The rear muffler often rots.

The front suspension is relatively strong; the weak point may be the shock absorber struts.

Be sure to check the steering rack play and the entire electro-hydraulic system; spare parts are expensive and are rarely available for the Astra “G”. It is important that there is no extraneous noise when turning the steering wheel.

Play in the gear shift knob is also a fairly common disease, especially in cars that are more than ten years old. The problem arises from worn-out connecting elements.

Astra "G" is a popular model, so finding spare parts is not a problem. Initial maintenance consists of replacing the timing belt; you may have to replace the tension roller and oil filter. For all original spare parts you will have to spend about 5-6 thousand rubles, for models with a gasoline engine.

Even with minor problems inherent in other used cars, the second generation Opel Astra is a solid car with relatively inexpensive maintenance. It acts as a practical family sedan, and the Bertone modification guarantees you a lot of positive emotions on the road.

The Caravan's cargo area is one of the largest in its class, and the rear suspension can easily carry fairly heavy loads.

The dashboard is made of good quality plastic. The standard Astra comes with a multifunction steering wheel. The seats are a bit "wooden".

A wide range of cars, engines, bodies and generations suggests a diverse set of technical characteristics of the Opel Astra. Power and dimensional parameters.

When it comes to C-class cars, one of the first to come to mind is the Opel Astra. Station wagons, hatchbacks and sedans, gasoline and diesel, generations G, H and J – there is a large selection, and with it there are many questions. An overview of the technical characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of Astra will help you figure it out.

Technical characteristics of Opel Astra.

Today, Opel Astra is one of the most popular and sought-after middle-class cars in our country and abroad. A wide selection of models, unpretentiousness, comfortable ground clearance, outstanding appearance - all this makes the Opel Astra a leader.

  • The car successfully combines excellent technical characteristics and aesthetic qualities. There are four generations in the history of the Opel Astra and the fifth has already appeared; here we will touch on the most relevant ones at the moment:
  • Opel Astra G;
  • Opel Astra H;

Opel Astra J.

The fifth generation of the Astra golf model will make its public debut in the fall of 2015 at an international show in Frankfurt, but the German automaker Opel, without waiting for this date, declassified the car ahead of schedule on the Internet in early June. The car retained the proportions of its predecessor, but became brighter, lighter and much more technologically advanced in all respects. Immediately after the official premiere, the new product should reach the shelves of European dealers, but you should not expect its appearance in Russia due to the recent departure of the brand from the domestic market.

On the outside, the fifth-generation Opel Astra resembles in many stylistic features the Monza concept and the “younger” Corsa of the extreme generation: the conservative look has been replaced by a brighter and more daring design, the construction of which involves sharp edges along with modern solutions.

In terms of its overall dimensions, the “fifth Astra” still “performs” in the European C-class, but compared to its predecessor it has become somewhat more compact: 4370 mm in length, 1809 mm in width and 1485 mm in height (the car has become 50 mm shorter and 26 mm lower). The wheel base of the German five-door hatchback accounts for 2662 mm.

No less grandiose transformations have occurred with the interior decoration of Astra than with the exterior - literally everything is new here, from the design to the finishing materials. Directly in front of the driver’s eyes is a “tight” steering wheel with a three-spoke design and a scattering of control elements, as well as an analog instrument panel with a large multifunction display.

The central place on the modern front panel is occupied by an 8-inch touchscreen of the IntelliLink multimedia complex, which has absorbed a considerable part of the physical buttons and switches, relieving the dashboard of unnecessary congestion. The climate control in the cabin is controlled by a separate unit with a pair of large “handles” and keys. True, the design of the basic versions is somewhat simpler - a regular radio, air conditioning and a steering wheel lacking multifunctionality.

The German automaker assures that the Astra K has received high-quality finishing materials corresponding to more status cars. Anatomical seats with a pronounced profile, approved by the German Orthopedic Association, are responsible for the comfortable placement of the driver and front passenger. Depending on the configuration, they can have up to 18 adjustments, ventilation, heating and massage. Rear passengers are promised increased space and an optional heating function for the outer seats.

The luggage compartment of the hatchback is ideal in shape, and when traveling it is designed to carry up to 370 liters of luggage. The backrest of the second row of seats is laid flush with the floor in unequal parts, as a result of which the useful capacity rises to 1210 liters.

Specifications. For the fifth generation of Opel Astra, an extensive line of power units of the Ecotec family is offered.

  • The base petrol option is a three-cylinder 1.0-liter unit with turbocharging and direct injection, producing 105 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 170 Nm of thrust in the range from 1800 to 4250 rpm. In combination with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed robot, it provides the German with acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 11.2-12.7 seconds, a top speed of 200 km/h and average fuel consumption at 4.3-4.4 liters in mixed mode.
  • Behind it, according to the hierarchy, is a 1.4-liter naturally aspirated “four” that generates 100 “horses” of power at 6000 rpm and 130 Nm of peak thrust starting at 4400 rpm. It has one gearbox - a five-speed manual, in tandem with which it takes 12.3 seconds to reach the first hundred, and the maximum speed is 185 km/h. Fuel consumption in the highway/city cycle is 5.4 liters per 100 km.
  • A more powerful option is an all-aluminum 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbo engine with direct fuel injection, which is available in several boost levels. In the first case, it produces 125 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 230 Nm of torque at 2000-4000 rpm, in the second – 150 horsepower and 230 Newton meters at the same number of revolutions. In partnership with the “junior” unit there is a 6-speed manual transmission, and with the “senior” unit there is also a 6-speed automatic transmission. The characteristics of this Opel Astra are as follows: 8.3-9.5 seconds to reach 100 km/h, 205-215 km/h top speed and 5.1-5.5 liters of average fuel consumption.
  • A 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel turbo engine is installed on the 5th generation Astra in three output versions - 95, 110 and 136 horsepower (280, 300 and 320 Nm, respectively). Gearboxes are 6-speed – “mechanical” and “automatic”. From zero to 100 km/h, the hatchback is capable of accelerating in 9.6-12.7 seconds, reaching the maximum mark of 185-205 km/h and “eating” only 3.5-4.6 liters of diesel fuel.
  • In addition, the Astra K will use more “developed” power plants - 1.6-liter gasoline and diesel units producing up to 200 horsepower (further details are currently unknown).

The fifth generation of the model is built on the D2XX modular platform, which also underlies the “second Cruise”. Thanks to the widespread use of especially strong steel in the design, the car has “lost weight” by 120-200 kilograms compared to its predecessor and weighs in running order from 1263 to 1350 kg. The front suspension is independent with MacPherson struts, the rear is a semi-independent beam with a Watt mechanism. An electric amplifier is implanted into the rack and pinion steering system. The braking system is represented by disc brakes on all wheels (ventilated at the front) and modern electronic “assistants”.

Options and prices. The 5th generation Opel Astra will become available to European consumers in September 2015; the new product might have reached Russia in 2016, but the German brand decided to officially leave our market. In Germany, the 2016 model year five-door hatchback will be available at prices ranging from 17,260 to 21,860 euros.
The list of standard equipment includes fabric trim, two electric windows, power steering, ABS and ESP, front and side airbags, cruise control, air conditioning and a folding rear seatback.
The arsenal of “top” cars includes front and rear cameras, electrically adjustable front seats, LED front headlights and rear lights, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloy wheels and much more.
