Homemade tracked vehicle. Making a caterpillar for an all-terrain vehicle with your own hands. Track ATV control

Minsk resident Boris Karavkin. And recently Yuri Pidgaetsky from Molodechno decided to build an interesting homemade tracked all-terrain vehicle from a "Muscovite" and Volkswagen. What came out of the symbiosis of components and assemblies of Soviet and German cars, read our material.

"Come to Molodechno, we have made a tracked all-terrain vehicle here" - such a message came to the editorial mail recently. The designer did not manage to send the photos, so until the very last moment we had no idea what we were going to shoot.

And when we drove up to Yuri's house, they just fell out of the sediment from his all-terrain vehicle. This is something incredible live! It seems that the car arrived in Molodechno straight from the set of films about zombies, the apocalypse or Mad Max.

Below - a caterpillar "cart", on top - a shortened body from "Moskvich-2141", painted in a military khaki color. Live car looks very unusual. This has never happened before in our "Autoexotics" section!

“I have been fond of homemade products since childhood, I went to the circles of model designers,” says Yuri Pidgaetsky. “I made a variety of homemade products - a children's kart, a tricycle with low-pressure tires. I know - it's just that my hands are always itching to do something like that ... "

Before the trip, we will study the technical component of the "monster". A car was made without drawings - by eye. A solid frame is assembled from shaped pipes, sheathed with tin. A shortened body of a "Muscovite" was later installed on it. Yuri says that he fiddled with him the most.

The radiator and stove are located at the front. There is still room under the hood for various little things. So the car has almost two trunks.

There is no back row of seats. Instead, there is a huge trunk, under which the power unit and transmission are hidden. As you can see, the all-terrain vehicle turned out to be very practical.

The most interesting thing is hidden under the boot floor. The gasoline 1.8-liter engine from the old Volkswagen Passat is located almost in the middle, but unlike a passenger car, it is not located transversely, but longitudinally. Next comes the 5-speed gearbox from the same car with a welded differential.

From it - a kind of cardan to the rear "Zhiguli" bridge. The exhaust pipes are welded from scratch, the fuel tank is homemade.

The rear axle differential is naturally free. The torque is transmitted to the rear rollers. They also have brake discs from the old Volkswagen Golf.

As you already understood, brakes are needed not only to stop the car, but also to control it. We pull on the right control lever - we act on the caliper of the right roller, as a result, the car turns to the right. We pull the left lever towards ourselves - we turn to the left. There is no brake pedal - to brake, you need to pull on both levers.

Yuri made a caterpillar from a conveyor belt and metal shaped tubes for a week and a half. Conventional car rims are used as rollers. Each track has a tensioning mechanism. According to the craftsman, the suspension is made from what was - on each side there are three struts with springs and shock absorbers.

Interior elements are taken from the same "Muscovite". Everything works inside, including the radio and the stove. Conventionally, the number of seats can be defined as 2 + 1 - in the cabin, albeit in tight quarters, but three of us can accommodate. Gear shifting is reversed.

Now hold on to the chair - Yuri's all-terrain vehicle can swim! Everything is sealed inside - the "Muscovite" does not sink. True, so far there has not been enough courage for full-fledged water tests. The car drove into the lake, but held on to the bottom with the back of the caterpillar. The front of the all-terrain vehicle did not sink! In general, the car should float, but Yuri has no desire to fully launch it into the water - it's a pity to drown such a technique.

The armor is strong and our tanks are fast - we are going to test the equipment in the fields! By the way, the all-terrain vehicle has not yet been properly tested - Yuri drove it only a few times. So we, together with the designer, will probe its capabilities, positive and negative qualities.

But first you need to get into the car, and for this - remember the army days. You need to climb on a car just like in the army on an infantry fighting vehicle, that is, as you can, you climb.

First comment after our Instagram post: "Will the ATV roll forward with emergency braking?" We braked at low speeds - we didn't roll over. Still, despite the considerable height, the center of gravity is located low - where the engine, rollers and tracks are. Before us, Yuri developed a maximum speed of 60 km / h, braked, but not urgently - the car did not overturn. To brake strongly at high speed while there is no desire - first you need to install three-point belts and a roll cage. It seems that the car should not turn over, but in order to check this for sure, it is better to work on safety first. So, just in case.

You sit behind the wheel, ugh - with levers, very high. There has never been such a tall "Muscovite" in history! The cabin is very noisy while driving, but it cannot be said that this is a drawback. Noise enhances the emotion of driving. You really drive like in a tank.

I always dreamed of traveling on tracked vehicles, it's a pity I didn't manage to steer anything in the army. It's time to catch up!

The clutch and gas are just like in a normal car, nothing special. It is difficult to find the gears, the switching scheme is inverted, which blows up the brain, there are also problems with clarity, but you can choose any gear, because the car starts off at any speed, at least from third for sure. There is no "lowering" in the transmission, the lowered row in this car is already made by default, so in first gear you can climb at the speed of a turtle.

I turn on the gear (though I don’t know which one), abruptly let go of the clutch pedal and press on the gas - the car slightly rears up and starts abruptly with a noise! To be honest, I don't even know how to describe emotions. This is something incredible! There is very little snow, there are no special obstacles, but from the ride on this "monster" you just want to scream with delight! A very unusual feeling. The engine is roaring, the tracks are pounding, my heart is bursting out of my chest - this is the most emotional test drive of my career! Words cannot describe how cool it is to ride this self-made caterpillar.

To turn, you need to put a lot of effort on the levers. But the maneuverability is not bad: we squeeze the "gas" to the floor, abruptly pull the left lever with all our strengths with both hands - the all-terrain vehicle starts turning the "dimes" in place! Moreover, homemade tracks do not fall off the rollers - the strength of the structure is felt.

Immediately I remember the famous obscene video about a warrant officer and tankers: "Once, with a turn, turned on the front - and went!"

Off-road performance? The ground clearance is 380 mm, there are no overhangs, but there are tracks. It is a pity, for some reason there was very little snow in Molodechno - it was not possible to check how the car drives through deep snow. But again, there is enough emotion without off-road obstacles. You just go - and your eyes are already on your forehead!

But we drove along the ditch - the all-terrain vehicle passes through it very well. But so far Yuri has no idea when the car will start to fall back. Therefore, they did not take large slides - the driver is simply afraid to turn the all-terrain vehicle over.

In theory, everything should be fine - the center of gravity is low. But in practice, you need to make a frame, belts - and even then try to feel the stability limit of the all-terrain vehicle. There is a feeling that he is capable of a lot, but so far it is simply scary to break him - so much work has been invested in the technique.

Finally, we still try to feel this edge again, but on the rise, the connection between the rollers and the engine is unexpectedly lost! The all-terrain vehicle rolls back - and remains on the ice, which is covered with cracks along the edges. An attempt to turn on the gear and move off leads nowhere. Only the grinding of metal is heard - the car does not drive. Have sailed!

It turned out that the cardan had torn. Moreover, he broke on the first test. However, you shouldn't even worry about it - Yuri already has a solution to the problem. The next propeller shaft will be strong enough to take it all.

It is normal when something goes wrong with new technology. While the all-terrain vehicle has only one weak point, there are no other "snot". And this is very good! The machine was built from scratch by one person, has not yet been tested - and only the drive breaks down. In the evening of the same day, the designer repaired the all-terrain vehicle and drove out of the ditch.

As a result - a complete delight. You are simply amazed at the talent of Yuri Pidgaetsky, who made such a car from scrap materials! He had some spare parts, he had to buy something - in the end, he spent about $ 800 on the construction. For this money, you can't even buy a frail ATV, but here you get a whole "monster" - an all-terrain vehicle on a caterpillar track. Bravo to its creator!

To increase the throughput of the walk-behind tractor and use it as an all-terrain vehicle or snowmobile, you can equip it with tracks. They can be purchased ready-made, but they are expensive, and it is not always possible to find the right option for your walk-behind tractor. There are several ways how to make a caterpillar for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands.

How to make a caterpillar on a walk-behind tractor with your own hands

If you wish, you can independently modify your walk-behind tractor, turning it into a tracked all-terrain vehicle or snowmobile. The main rule is to take into account what kind of work the tracks are intended for in order to choose the right material, because they must be not only durable, but also extremely light.

Having the materials at hand, having correctly calculated the length of the caterpillar, you can make it yourself using simple improvised means.

First of all, you need to equip your walk-behind tractor with an additional pair of wheels. For each side pair, the caterpillar track will be worn.

The length of each of the two goslings will be equal to the circumference of one wheel and the distance between the axles of each pair of wheels, multiplied by two.

Important: the wheels on the walk-behind tractor must be of the same diameter.

The material for homemade products can be:

  • conventional conveyor belt and bush-roller chain;
  • car tires;
  • belts and chains.

So, let's consider several options for making a goose yourself, depending on the material used.

From the conveyor belt

This method is the simplest, since it does not require a large number of special tools and auxiliary materials.

  • When choosing a belt for a caterpillar, give preference to a strip with a thickness of at least 7 mm, because it has a fairly large load. Hitching with moving parts will be provided by a sleeve-roller chain.
  • To give the tape strength and increase its operational life, it is recommended to sew along the edges of the tape with frequent stitches with a step of about 10 mm.
  • It is also necessary to sew the tape along the ends in order to connect it into a ring of the required diameter, or use, for greater reliability, hinges resembling a piano canopy.
  • Make sure that the additional wheelset that you install on the walk-behind tractor frame is the same diameter as the main wheels on the walk-behind tractor.

From the tire

It is enough just to make a durable reliable goose for a walk-behind tractor from a tire. The process of making from a car tire does not take too long, since it does not need to be stitched and lugs built up - the tire itself is a closed structure with a tread for traction.

Tires from wheels for trucks or tractors with a pronounced tread pattern are best suited for a caterpillar.

The manufacturing process is divided into several stages:

  1. Using a very sharp knife, dipped in soapy water to enhance the cutting ability on rubber, cut the tape for the goose of the required width.
  2. The sides of the tire are cut off with a jigsaw with a fine-toothed file.
  3. The hard parts on the inside of the tire are also sheared off with a knife or jigsaw.

However, here, too, there are several points that you should pay attention to:

  • The tread pattern should be clearly pronounced, since its reliefs are a kind of lugs that increase the adhesion of the moving mechanism to the surface.
  • The length of such a track is limited by the diameter of the tire, therefore, before attaching an additional pair of wheels, this should be taken into account.

Of belts and chains

In order to make a tracked all-terrain vehicle from a walk-behind tractor, you can use ordinary belts with a wedge-shaped profile. The connection of the belts to each other is carried out by grousers attached to them on rivets or screws. This gives us a belt track.

To make a goose from chains (chain tracks), you need to take two pieces of the same chain of the required length.

  • The end links of both segments are expanded in order to connect them into two closed rings.
  • The unclenched links are clamped again, and then welded for strength.
  • Sections are cut from steel of the required thickness, which will serve as lugs.
  • The lugs are bolted from both ends to the links of both closed chains, thus forming a relief track for the walk-behind tractor.

Homemade track links

You can also make your own homemade goose tracks from any suitable material. The main thing that needs to be taken into account is what kind of load you are going to give to your walk-behind tractor.

From plastic pipes

You can use pieces of plastic pipe as tracks for a snowmobile goose. To do this, cut the plastic water pipe # 40 into lengths equal to the width of the caterpillar. Use a circular saw to cut each piece lengthwise into two equal halves, or use a circular saw for wood.

The resulting tracks must be attached at regular intervals to the conveyor belt with furniture bolts No. 6 with large hemispherical caps.

From wooden blocks

Sometimes, if the load on the goose is not very large, birch blocks can be used as tracks. They are not particularly durable for heavy loads, but they are light, affordable, and a track with such tracks can be repaired at any convenient place.

Iron tracks

The most reliable are metal tracks made of high quality iron. For this purpose, metal pipes or a profile cut into pieces of the required length are suitable. A profile metal pipe is cut according to the same principle as a plastic one, and is attached to a conveyor belt with bolts.

However, metal tracks, despite their noticeable strength, also have their drawbacks: they are heavy compared to plastic and wooden ones, and can bend during use. To straighten the track, you need to remove it from the goose, and this is a laborious operation.

When choosing the material from which the track links for your mini-all-terrain vehicle will be made, you should evaluate the degree of load and operating conditions. To overcome snowy expanses, light plastic or wooden tracks are perfect, and for using a walk-behind tractor as a mini-tractor, it is still better to make a caterpillar with metal lugs.

Buy a hitch and trailed to a walk-behind tractor in online stores

DIY caterpillar for a motorized towing vehicle

The motorized towing vehicle, popularly called "motorized dog", is the best suited for use in northern latitudes with good snow cover. Using a walk-behind tractor, you can independently make a high-speed tracked vehicle alternative to a dog sled, which can tow a sled with a person or a small load in the snow.

Making a caterpillar for a motor dog with your own hands is not difficult at all.

You can use an old goose from the Buran snowmobile. To increase the undercarriage, you should cut it in half and build it up with inserts. Carriages from the old "Buran" can serve as tracks. Three carriages with rollers are enough. They also need to be sawn and extended with inserts.

In the absence of old spare parts, a track for a motorized towing vehicle can be made from improvised means in one of the above ways. For example, from a conveyor belt.

For manufacturing you will need:

  • conveyor belt from 22 cm wide;
  • metal tires for reinforcement;
  • hardwood blocks of wood for crawler tracks.

We bring to your attention a video showing the process of making a caterpillar.

Making a track for a walk-behind tractor is a simple process, although it requires a sufficient amount of time. It is also necessary to apply all diligence and skill so that all the links of the goose are located at an equal distance from each other. This will help prevent the track from skewing and slipping off the bearing surfaces.

Since then, when the phrase about the state of Russian roads came out from the pen of Gogol, the problem has not become less urgent. As before, in some of the God-forsaken corners of the country, people generally forgot to dream of asphalt pavement. The only way out is to change to ATVs. Alas, the models offered by car factories are not able to satisfy the needs of motorists from the provinces. The common people need a small-sized, economical, and, of course, a cheap off-road vehicle. Only in a home workshop from scrap materials can such a dream come true.

Materials and components for the all-terrain vehicle on tracks

It would be fair to warn in advance that power units removed from vehicles are causing increased fuel consumption. But in comparison with motorcycle engines, they have a noticeable power reserve. The production of tracks also entails additional costs.

The body of a homemade all-terrain vehicle is best constructed from aluminum or duralumin sheet. It will be necessary to purchase triplex glass, liquid rubber (can be replaced with silicone grease). The main material for the tracks will be a sheet (or strip) of rubber. One pair of bridges borrowed from Soviet cars - "Zaporozhets" or "Zhiguli".

You can highlight important points that should be taken into account in the process of creating an all-terrain vehicle on tracks.

For a homemade body, there are requirements such as strength, tightness and streamlining by the oncoming air flow while driving. In terms of geometry, the best solution would be a flat-bottomed boat body.

In view of the fact that you will have to travel (more precisely - "caterpillar") swampy areas or even overcome shallow bodies of water, the body should contain a minimum of seams. In other words, instead of welding, a solid sheet must be bent, giving the desired shape. The metal sheet is used for the manufacture of not only the cab, but also all the compartments, including the one that is intended for the engine. To exclude the harmful effect of water with a moisture-proof material (for example, rubber), they reliably cover the joints and fasteners of the nodes. Particular care should be taken to protect the battery and wiring as much as possible from moisture. It is better if special mines are allocated for them.

The rigidity of the structure of the cross-country vehicle must be provided by a frame made of steel pipes. The axles and engine will be installed and secured on a frame made of copper tubing.

Make holes in the body for leading out the bridges. Seal the joints of the axle shafts and the body (in the holes) thoroughly with rubber couplings.

The highlight of this all-terrain vehicle is the presence of a caterpillar track, without which it is difficult to imagine movement on any off-road and even swimming. The treadmill is cut from rubber sheet and looped back. When calculating the dimensions of the caterpillar, measure the distance between the shafts, which are driving. An important element that makes it possible to easily overcome any dirt are the lugs, which are riveted on the outside of the track. And if they are made in the form of small blades, then the lugs will play the role of blades when the caterpillar is immersed in the water. This idea is not difficult to implement with a thick aluminum sheet at hand. Next, you need to measure the width of the wheels. You will need this value when calculating the distance between adjacent stop elements that are attached to the inside of the track. The center of each wheel, as here http://modelist-konstruktor.com/, must exactly coincide with the center line of the track and, thus, the wheel will be located between the stops.

The taut state of the tracks can be ensured in the following way: fill the space between the bridge wheels with the driven wheels.

The final stage is to equip the cabin with laminated glass (triplex or duplex) with rubber mountings. All-terrain vehicles - homemade products on tracks, the drawings of which are in this article, are popular with creative people.

Ivan Sardaev, a 67-year-old resident of the city of Topki, began inventing and creating various vehicles almost 20 years ago.
In 1993, together with his wife, daughter and son, he returned from Vorkuta to the city of his childhood and built a house in four months. It turned out to be large, spacious, with an area of 150 squares.

Well, about four years after we moved and settled down, I got tired of cleaning the snow after a blizzard in the winter: you work with a shovel, your hands get tired. Like it or not, you involuntarily start to think with your head, - the pensioner laughs.

Snow removal equipment by Ivan Sardaev.

In the beginning there were scooters

Ivan Vasilievich admits: he was fascinated by technology since childhood. Even as a child, he assembled scooters either with bearings or with wheels from a baby carriage. But it was back in 1997 that the tricycle snowblower became his first full-fledged invention. She was unusual - she had two wheels in front, and one - steerable - behind. As the inventor now recalls, the car was weak - it could only rake snow on the paths. He decided to improve it and assembled a model a little more complicated, then another. And then he got so involved in the process that he began to create already snow blowers with buckets and auger machines. And not only them.

The very first snow blower of Topkinets was a three-wheeled one.

In 2007, Ivan Sardaev even published an article about three of his models in the "Modelist-Constructor" magazine, and two years later - about the security system. He invented it and installed it in his house, if necessary, she sends him a signal to his mobile phone.

Several bucket snow blowers, a pair of auger-rotor machines and a pair of pneumatic snowmobiles - this is an incomplete list of mobile equipment that Ivan Vasilyevich collected until 2013. And all this in his free time from work - despite his age, he still fixes TVs for people. And four years ago, his son gave him a computer, and when the pensioner mastered the Internet, new ideas appeared. One of the last was the idea to make an all-terrain vehicle on a caterpillar track with your own hands.

And the roof is from "Moskvich"

He began to embody the idea in 2015, and it took Ivan Sardaev a year and a half to create an unusual machine. Most of the details in the S-10 all-terrain vehicle, this name was given to his brainchild by the inventor - from "Zhiguli" of various models. The rear axle, the engine and the gearbox are from the "classics", the rollers in the tracks are from the eleventh VAZ model. Many parts were collected from neighbors who, by the way, admire the master's golden hands, or were picked up at auto-parsing and metal collection points. The roof of the all-terrain vehicle is from "Moskvich", but the caterpillars had to be thought over and assembled completely to the last detail. For them, the inventor even had to buy a conveyor belt from a store.
A pneumatic snowmobile is another machine assembled by the hands of a TV technician from Fireplaces.

In total, Ivan Vasilyevich spent more than 30 thousand rubles on certain purchases for his brainchild.

Most of all I had to tinker with the caterpillars, - the pensioner admits. - It was a very painstaking work that required special care. After all, there is something wrong, you will miss a little and everything, either the teeth will cling, or the tape will slide out, and in both cases the car will not run.

This is how the all-terrain vehicle looked in the summer of 2016.

Currently, the Topkinets are testing their all-terrain vehicle. On a flat road, it can move at a speed of 35-40 kilometers per hour, and on virgin snow, the speed decreases by about half. By the way, instead of a steering wheel, it has two control levers, like a tractor, and the driver and passenger - a two-seater all-terrain vehicle - is always warm, the interior is heated by two stoves.

Until further the yard and the street where his house is located, Ivan Sardaev does not drive his invention. But in the future, after the car passes tests at other times of the year, he hopes to register it, as it should be. But the creator does not want to sell it, even for 350 thousand rubles, which was appreciated by such a technique on one of the sites. You need such an all-terrain vehicle yourself.
C-10 tracked all-terrain vehicle of a Kuzbass pensioner. Ivan Sardaev worked on the all-terrain vehicle for a year and a half. The VAZ-2103 engine, the cabin is the top of the Moskvich-2140 cabin.

Today we will talk about homemade vehicles that our talented people make literally on their knees.

Homemade vehicles are generally a separate art form (so to speak) that can surprise! All-terrain vehicles, buggies, tracked motorcycles, amphibians - people do all this in their garages. And as a couple it is quite interesting to look at the fruits of the “imagination and direct hands” of our compatriots. Which is what I propose to do now.

Price: 250.000₽

The body of the all-terrain vehicle remained from the ZAZ-368. The gearbox, internal combustion engine and axle are installed from Soviet cars of the VAZ family. Quite a jaunty all-terrain vehicle.

Tracked all-terrain vehicle from "Oka" for260.000₽

Another curious all-terrain vehicle from the Oka. Impressive, isn't it? This instance accelerates to 45 km / h and knows how to swim - which is not a bad thing.

Craftsmen assembled an amphibious tracked all-terrain vehicle and put a UAZ body on it

What our craftsmen are not capable of, when it comes to translating ideas into reality, here anything will go hand in hand, even a body from a bobby that has been standing in the yard for a long time. Although this story is much more serious, it will focus on the "Association of All-Terrain Vehicles", which are engaged in the production of extremely interesting equipment to order. Let's take a look at the ZVM-2410 Ukhtysh. I just want to say: “Wow! What a cool UAZ! ”, The first time when I saw the photo I thought that it was just the masters of photo processing tried, but no, then I found a video and not even one.

The equipment is produced by craftsmen on their own, but on the basis of generally available and widespread technology, which is very good in terms of maintainability and further maintenance.

Well, let's take a closer look at what's in front of us. The all-terrain vehicle has two volumes, the first is sealed and serves for buoyancy on water, the second is actually UAZ 31512/14, at the top everything is clear (almost) 5 seats, a trunk, an engine compartment, and at the bottom there is a homemade tracked platform.

The tracks provide minimum ground pressure and maximum grip, coupled with good ground clearance and the ability to swim, we get excellent equipment for the very “deepest” places.

The buyer is offered three engines to choose from: ZMZ-409 (143 hp, gasoline), ZMZ-51432 (113 hp, diesel) and, in my opinion, the best version of Cummins (2.8, diesel, 120 hp). The transmission was developed by the company independently, a mechanic with 4 or 5 steps is offered to choose from. The steering is carried out by clutches with a servo booster, the levers move very easily, like in a computer game, or for extra. board you can put an ordinary steering wheel.

As you can see, the car has very interesting doors, the phrase "go out the window" is well applicable in this case, it is necessary for the ability to swim, and the basic equipment includes a bilge pump. There is also a bracket for the winch, it's a pity that a mechanical one is not provided right away to get out of any dirt.

What makes me happy in this project is the possibility of making it to order, and not another garage creation, the price is by the way 2 lemons 350 pieces, you decide a lot or a little, but for a ready-made amphibious all-terrain vehicle, I think it's not even bad, since there are few analogues.

All-terrain vehicle - a homemade product equipped with a turbodiesel from Mazda

There are a lot of enthusiasts in Russia who are capable of much in order to surprise or delight motorists with their amazing projects. Look, for example, at this tracked all-terrain vehicle called GV-3. It was built from scratch and took only a year and a half to complete.

This all-terrain vehicle was designed almost entirely from scratch. Its chassis, suspension, most of the body parts, exhaust system, electrics, heating, cooling, control, air purification and interior trim were made by the owner of GV-3.

For the construction of this project, it was decided to borrow components and assemblies from the GAZ-71 tracked all-terrain vehicle. And under the hood of the homemade product they installed a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine from Mazda. In the process of creating the body, parts from several cars were used: UAZ-Hunter, Sobol, Gazelle, UAZ-452 and UAZ-469. Please note that the all-terrain vehicle has independent pneumatic lever suspension.

Tracks for GV-3 were made to order at the Kursk Composite Plant. As for the wheels, they were taken from the VAZ classics. It turned out to be a rather interesting homemade all-terrain vehicle. It can be used not only for entertainment, but also for hunting trips or winter fishing.

Lightweight tracked all-terrain vehicle with Lifan engine

The light tracked all-terrain vehicle with an 11 l / s Lifan engine assembled by Dmitry Dementyev is an order of magnitude better than factory counterparts, and at a price several times cheaper, because it is assembled almost entirely from components and assemblies of domestic production.

The engine is located in the rear, and the drive is front, that is, from the rear to the front there is a cardan. The all-terrain vehicle is floating and has a boat hull welded from 1.5 mm sheet metal.
