Tuning the IZH Planet-5 motorcycle is the dream of many boys, which they sometimes begin to realize only in adulthood, when they can afford to purchase a product from the Izhevsk Motor Plant. Then you can get serious about Planet 5. Their male and sometimes female children and grandchildren join such “operations”, joining the amazing and mysterious world of the motorcycle maker.

The Planet-5 motorcycle, production of which began in 1985 and was completed in 2008, is remarkably amenable to tuning. More often they carry out tuning of the exterior, some units or main components. To make the fifth “Planet” more playful and passable (in fact, to remake the IL “Planet-5”), remove excess from the frame in order to reduce the 180-kilogram curb weight. Then, for its better ride, long-stroke shock absorbers are installed on the rear wheel and the front fork is replaced. You can. it was moved from a Java motorcycle with increased speed. Naturally, the wings were also changed.

There are no major changes to the engine. To increase the service life, replace the original bearings from the secondary shaft with “Java” ones. The quality and increased service life compensate for the high cost of these bearings.

For the IZH Planet-5 motorcycle, engine tuning also means enlargement. For this purpose, its top is cut off, the liner is bored to 76 millimeters. A piston from Planet-Sport will fit freely under this size. After these modifications, the prototype of the modernized Planet 5 will reach a speed of up to 160 kilometers instead of its 120 kilometers per hour. By the way, the engine developed a power of 42 hp. at 5950 rpm. But with any boost of the engine, its resource is reduced. Such modifications should not be made on a motorcycle intended for everyday normal riding.

When boosting the engine, the standard rear tires, clutch and chain may not last long. We need to think about their modernization.

IZh "Planet-5" clutch tuning

The clutch is standard and works reliably only under normal conditions. With aggressive driving and with increased loads that occurred after boosting the engine, the load on the discs increases significantly, which can cause them to fail. Experts advise replacing one of the disks with a thicker metal one. This will ensure significant compression of the springs, there will be no slippage, and naturally, the clutch will become harder to squeeze.

For the engine of the IZH Planet-5 motorcycle, tuning of which is discussed in this article, by increasing the speed, cut the upper edge at the exhaust window by one and a half to two millimeters. A prerequisite is equal weight of the pistons, and the windows in the cylinders must coincide with the purge windows, not blocking them in any case. The edges of the piston rings must be chamfered. The piston pins must be lightened by having a cone grooved at the end. Also chamfer the ends of the fingers. You will need to bite off the “tails” of the locking pins so that they are not cut off by the piston pin. The cylinder heads must be tightened by trimming their ends on a lathe.

Tuning the IZH "Planet-5" motorcycle: modification

For modification, you need to find a crankshaft that has a shaft in the upper part. Such a shaft can be found on the “liquid” “Jupiter”. It is interchangeable with other IL models. You need to drill 2 holes in the head with a diameter of 3-3.5 millimeters, as was done on the “Planet”. Standard aluminum separators installed at the Izhevsk Motor Plant are not reliable.
After the modifications, you will have to use AI-92 gasoline.

The characteristics of the motorcycle are so good that from the moment of purchase the vehicle could be used both on rural roads and in the city, as evidenced by the powerful engine and modern design. Even with modern technology, Izh can compete and even win in some parameters. With an engine of only 1 cylinder, the motorcycle is capable of producing a considerable 22 horsepower. Fuel consumption at an average speed of 90 km/h is 5 liters. As for the factory maximum, the characteristics of Izh Planet 5 allow it to reach a speed of up to 120 km per hour. Thanks to its reliable design and high-quality Soviet assembly, the transport is unpretentious and easy to maintain after difficult operation.

Tuning Izh Planet 5. Preparation.

If you bought an expensive Japanese motorcycle, tuning it will become difficult, and you won’t be able to carry out the upgrade yourself. Do-it-yourself tuning of Izh Planet 5 is quite simple, you will only need to have a small set of equipment and from an old Soviet transport you will get a modern and powerful motorcycle. Any tuning consists of two types - external and internal (change in technical characteristics). Let's look first at the first option, namely modernizing the appearance.

External tuning of Izh Planet 5

Often, to improve the appearance, styling of individual elements is used, and let's start with the muffler. Previously, a muffler kit was made, including chrome pipes and various attachments. Having found such a kit, you will not only get a beautiful appearance, but also improve the performance of the exhaust system, and the engine will run even more stable and smoother. Therefore, we recommend starting tuning with the exhaust pipe.

Next, they most often replace the rear shock absorbers by installing a higher size. Raising the motorcycle will significantly reduce the pressure on the engine and gas tank, so replacing the shock absorbers is also necessary. But it is worth considering that for proper operation you will have to balance the wheels. Let's look at other changes in the appearance of IZH Planet 5.

• For better sportiness, the height of the front wing is increased.
• An additional tuning will be the replacement of standard round turn signals with rectangular ones.
• A modern type of external styling is the installation of xenon. With it, the vehicle will not only be more beautiful, but also safer on the road.

The engine and other elements of Izh Planet 5 are especially amenable to changes, because thanks to the high-quality and simple assembly of the engine, changing its components will be quite simple. Let's start with engine tuning, which will increase the performance of your vehicle.

To increase engine power, the first step is to repress the crankshaft. The result will be an increase in engine performance by 15%. You can read about this on the forums, or ask experienced people. The second option for engine styling is to install bearings from another motorcycle, namely the Java 350. It is strongly recommended to carry out such tuning only when you plan to operate the Izh on large and high-speed rides, because this change threatens to deteriorate the exhaust system.

Also, a standard increase in the power of any vehicle is the boring of the cylinder, so the Izh Planet 5 motorcycle, after increasing the volume to 75 mm, will receive a significant increase in speed, in most cases the maximum figure is 160 km per hour.

Let's go further, and the next option for tuning Izh Planet 5 will be to improve the boost system. To do this, you need to install an expensive foreign-made air filter. We also recommend installing new gaskets that will hold air.

Good day! So I decided to write my first post. It will be about how I turned IZH Planet into Dirt Tracker.
I work as an argon welder. Before that, he worked for 10 years as a straightening welder at a service station. At work, I often have to help people with their motorcycles - either the frame will burst, or the rim will shatter into smithereens...
After reading the Bike Post, I decided to get myself a motorcycle. But we are not looking for easy ways, and stock motorcycles were immediately rejected. Before starting work on the motorcycle, the following requirements were set:
it should be inexpensive
easy availability of spare parts on the market
convenient for driving around the city - to and from work
high-torque engine (I weigh a lot)
Therefore, the choice fell on IL Planet. It was purchased via the Internet in one of the villages of the Sumy region for reasonable money, that is, a little more expensive than for nothing. After delivering it to my native Kharkov, I started work. I immediately decided to make a Dirt Tracker out of it - I really like this style.

In addition to its decent appearance, Izh Planet 5 has excellent technical characteristics. The motorcycle is equipped with a single-cylinder two-stroke engine with a power of 22 hp. With. The fuel consumption and processing system requires a modest 5 liters. gasoline with stable driving at a speed of 90 km/h. In addition, this model of domestic motorcycle was one of the first to receive an air cooling system, which increases traction at low speeds.

The maximum speed of the motorcycle is 120 km/h. The unit performs well when driving off-road and does not require large expenses for maintenance. All this is the reason for the wild popularity of Izh Planet 5 from 1987 to the present day. After all, not every one of us can buy an expensive Harley Davidson. But many people are capable of paying 5–6 thousand rubles for a domestic motorcycle. In addition, the Izhevsk Machine Plant model is much easier to tune with your own hands, which cannot be said about the expensive American and Japanese “monsters”.

2 Starting to modernize...

When starting the process of modifying individual elements and the entire Izh Planet 5 as a whole, it is worth realizing that the work will be difficult and time-consuming. Again, these are not foreign bikes, for tuning of which the manufacturer has created ready-made kits and parts in advance. To improve your domestic motorcycle, you can choose 2 options - improving the appearance or increasing the technical characteristics.

In most cases, Planet 5 owners are interested in styling the motorcycle. The first thing you need to pay attention to is the muffler. After spending several hours searching on the Internet, or visiting the nearest car market, you can find a set of chrome-plated pipes and nozzles. Dismantling the standard “cans” and installing new steel parts will significantly lighten the unit, making engine operation more stable. The performance of the exhaust system will also improve, which will not “choke” when the engine overheats when driving off-road.

To improve rear wheel travel, longer shock absorbers can be installed. They will raise the rear of the Planet 5, which will relieve pressure on the gas tank and engine. Along with this, you will have to balance the motorcycle wheels.

In addition, the following Izh styling methods are common among craftsmen:

• installation of double-sided bars - they will protect the motorcycle and the driver in case of a fall;
• installing xenon will help better illuminate the road and make the motorcycle visible at night or in fog;
• replacement of standard turn signals - installation of modern rectangular parts instead of outdated round ones;
• installation of a new windshield. This method is the most popular among Izh Planet 5 owners, since replacing one part completely changes the appearance of the motorcycle;
• increasing the height of the front fender, which will give the unit a more sporty appearance;
• replacing standard tires with more modern and brighter elements.

All of the above methods of modernizing a domestic motorcycle model will radically change its appearance. However, before you get started, think carefully about which parts you want to keep and which parts need replacing.

3 Tuning Izh - catching up with Harley

In addition to various methods of changing the appearance of a motorcycle, owners of Izh Planet 5 have ample opportunities to perform tuning with their own hands. To understand which parts of the unit can be improved, let’s consider each of them separately. The first thing that comes to mind when modernizing a domestic motorcycle is engine tuning. There are many ways to improve the “heart” of Izh Planet 5.

The first of them is repressing the crankshaft, which increases engine power by 10–15%. Another common method of engine modernization is to replace standard bearings with parts from the “eternal” domestic secondary shaft. During disassembly, it is necessary to silver plate the lower separator and the upper ring of the motor. It is worth noting that as a result of such an operation, the resource of the Izh Planet 5 exhaust system is significantly reduced. Therefore, you need to resort to this method of improving a motorcycle engine only when the unit will be used at high speeds.

Another option for modernizing a domestic motorcycle is cylinder tuning. To do this, cut off its upper part and bore the sleeve to 75 mm. As a result of this operation, your motorcycle will be able to accelerate to 160 km/h.

The clutch plays one of the key roles in the design of the Izh Planet 5. To modernize this part of the motorcycle, it is necessary to replace one of the standard discs with a thicker metal element. This will cause the clutch springs to compress more tightly, causing the pedal to be pressed a little harder. This operation will significantly facilitate the operation of the engine and other elements.

Another method of increasing the power of a motorcycle is tuning the supercharging system. During work, it is necessary to replace the standard air filter with an imported one. At the same time, you can clean all the gaskets, which will begin to let more air through, preventing the engine from overheating. By the way, the same method is used to improve the characteristics of the supercharging system in a motorcycle.

Each of these modernization methods for Izh Planet 5 is easy to do with your own hands. After tuning, your motorcycle will become much more powerful, reliable and durable.

The most popular domestic motorcycles were IZh bikes produced by the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant; among them, the road version IZH Planet stood out - 5 tuning, which allowed the owner to get an individual motorcycle modified to suit his needs and desires, practically his own model.

Change in appearance.

Despite the fact that the design of the fifth Planet model was probably the most interesting among all domestic motorcycles, tuning the IZH Planet - 5 motorcycle most often began with the appearance. The main reason for this was that work to change the external image can be classified as the simplest, not requiring deep technical knowledge and skills.

For this purpose, the following main work was carried out:

• double-sided arches and knee guards were installed;
• the windshield was replaced;
• higher wings were mounted;
• direction indicators were replaced;
• the muffler pipe was replaced;
• enlarged side mirrors were installed.

Complete or partial tuning operations to change the appearance immediately made the motorcycle recognizable and different from its serial counterpart.

Improvement of technical parameters

Tuning to increase power.

The design of the motorcycle engine allows for tuning to increase its power. One option is to re-press the engine crankshaft and change the support bearings. Usually, secondary shaft bearings from a Java motorcycle were installed as new bearings. This restoration made it possible to achieve an increase in engine power of the IZH Planet - 5 by 10-15%.

The next option for adding power was to increase the cylinder volume. For this purpose, its upper part was cut off and the sleeve was bored to 76 mm. Then the appropriate piston was installed, usually a piston from a Planet Sport motorcycle was used.

Increasing the speed of the motorcycle.

After this operation, the speed of the motorcycle increased, according to some sources, to 160 km per hour. Therefore, work to increase engine capacity was carried out by owners who planned to operate their vehicle mainly on highways.

The most difficult technical tuning option for adding power to the IZH Planet - 5 is the installation of supercharging. For this purpose, an exhaust valve is installed, the device of which corresponds to the analogues on the sports versions.

Then an exhaust resonator is installed, which has sharply directed parameters. Its task is to create a wave backpressure of the fuel mixture. Next, a spool valve is installed to obtain asymmetrical phases of engine operation, which avoids the direct release of the spent mixture.

Performing supercharging on the engine of the Fifth Planet is a rather complex process and therefore is not widely used.

Improved grip.

As engine power increases, it is necessary to carry out work to improve the clutch. Under standard conditions, the standard clutch works reliably.

But as the load increases, the risk of “burning” it and subsequent repairs increases sharply. The main steps for tuning the clutch come down to replacing standard discs with larger metal ones. Typically, such discs are made of two millimeter iron.

The use of thicker metal discs reduces slippage, warping, breakage and provides greater heat transfer.

Appearance tuning.

If external tuning of a motorcycle changes the design and makes it recognizable, then tuning the technical characteristics almost always reduces the resource of the power unit. Therefore, when starting to modify his motorcycle, the owner should always remember that modernization can bring not only benefits, but also harm.
