The RAV4 model in the form of a compact crossover was released in the Land of the Rising Sun in 1994. Initially, it was positioned by the manufacturer as a technique for young and energetic people - with the decoding of the abbreviation Recreation Active Vehicle, which in English means "car for outdoor activities." And the number 4 reminds you of the presence of all-wheel drive in the car.

So why do people choose hybrid models of the auto industry? Everyone has their own reasons. Someone thus decides to save at least a little, another consoles himself with the thought that by exploiting such a wheelbarrow he takes care of nature, the third just wants to stand out from the background of others.

What is so special about this hybrid? Let's figure it out. After all, it is no coincidence that this Toyota was recognized as a worthy rival for the all-electric Tesla Model X and the most economical among all-wheel drive SUVs.

A few words about appearance

Changes compared to the previous model are not too significant. They mainly concern the front of the SUV. The radiator grill has narrowed and slightly decreased in size, it has become more elegant. The bumper bottom is made deliberately open to improve engine airflow.

The side part has not changed much, only at the bottom, the designers decided to carry out a stylish black edging, giving the car a strict line.

The backdrop has been preserved in its original form, except for the fact that the designers removed the step above the bumper - it interfered with loading the luggage compartment. The inscription "Hybrid" shines on the luggage cover at the bottom right.

The taillights are neatly placed on the trunk lid. Their shape is also stretched out, and the light of LED bulbs is noticeable from afar. The rear glass is even more streamlined than before. Down in the center of the glass is a lone janitor, and a spoiler with stop optics hangs over it. Above the spoiler is a radio antenna. Luggage "skis" were unobtrusively attached to the roof.

As is customary in any car manufacturer, to present a new or updated model for the New Year. Toyota did not stand aside and introduced its new and updated models. One of the vehicles featured at the New York Auto Show was the RAV4 hybrid SUV, one of eight hybrids from Toyota.

It is impossible to say that the RAV4 has gone through a complete redesign, rather it looks like a facelift and updates to the rear of the SUV. The front part has changed in comparison with the previous model. The radiator grill near the emblem has become smaller and narrower. The part of the grille under the emblem has also become longer, in the previous model it was wider and not so long. The lower part of the RAV4's bumper is open for good airflow to the engine.

The front bumper has become open and large, thereby pushing the Toyota RAV4 with a sharper shape in front. Behind the bumper, the headlights have also changed, becoming elongated towards the center of the grille and slightly narrower than previous models. On the sides, at the bottom of the bumper, the designers placed fog lights.

It's no surprise to connoisseurs that Toyota and Lexus are borrowing car parts, wheelbases, engines or other things from each other. This time, the RAV4 also showed that it took some parts of the base from the Lexus NX crossover. As for the hybrid setup, it was taken from the NX300h.


The side part is reminiscent of the previous RAV4 model, mirrors with turn signal and heating, the shape of the doors remains the same. The lower part and above the wheels are accentuated with black plastic edging, which gives the severity of the SUV. The hind feet have become more elongated and stretch on parts of the hindwings.

The rear of the RAV4 Hybrid has changed a bit, the trunk lid has become more comfortable and bigger. They removed the step above the bumper, which constantly interfered with the loading of oversized cargo. On the trunk lid, in the lower right corner, there is the inscription Hybrid, which indicates the presence of a hybrid installation.


The taillights were placed on the trunk lid, they became elongated and clearly visible even at a long distance and are based on LED optics. The trunk lid glass was made more streamlined and convex. A janitor was placed on the glass, a spoiler with a stop repeater above the glass. Slightly above the spoiler, an antenna was placed on the roof of the RAV4 Hybrid, for radio in the form of a shark fin. On the roof there are fasteners for the trunk.

According to the manufacturer, the RAV4 Hybrid will be available in two trim levels, XLE and LTD.


As for the Hybrid color scheme, the following colors will be available:

  • Blue;
  • Grey;
  • Silver.
The body dimensions of the new SUV will be:

With these parameters, the minimum turn of the RAV4 hybrid is 4.6 m, given that the mass of the unladen car is 1792 kg, but the curb weight is 2245 kg. The fuel tank capacity is also not particularly large, only 70 liters, as part of the journey relies on a hybrid installation. On the LTD package will be installed 18? chrome rims, for XLE model 17? alloy wheels.

The arrival of a new car on the sales market is always of interest to car enthusiasts with an interior, since the outside is one thing, but inside the comfort and design is completely different, which is striking and felt when driving.

The front panel of the RAV4 Hybrid is slightly different from its predecessor. Between the front seats of the RAV4 there is an armrest for storing various small items. The rear seats are just as comfortable, the armrest folds down and can easily accommodate three passengers. There is enough space between the rear and front seats for a tall person to sit down.

Much important, and the most interesting is the characteristic of a hybrid SUV. Both trim levels of the RAV4 Hybrid are powered by a 2.5L DOHC four-cylinder engine. The power of such a unit is 112 hp, as we remember, this is a hybrid model, but unlike the standard electric engine, two electric engines are installed on the RAV4 Hybrid, one in front, the second in the rear. Together, both systems produce 194 hp. and a torque of 206 Nm.

Paired with such engines, the RAV4 is equipped with an ECVT automatic variable transmission, which electronically and automatically transmits torque to the four wheels of the RAV4, with priority to front-wheel drive. The rear wheels are connected by automatics when slippage begins or the load on the front wheels increases. Since the Hybrid box is variable, the power of the engine is used during braking, and the excess charge is transferred to charge the batteries, in addition, when driving economically, the electronics also recharge the batteries, as evidenced by the indicator on the instrument panel.


The driver can choose three driving modes: Sport, ECO and EV, the latter involves driving only on the electric motor, according to the manufacturer, in this mode, the RAV4 Hybrid is able to drive a kilometer or a half at the lowest speeds.

Fuel consumption in the RAV4 Hybrid is 6.92 l/100km in the countryside, 7.60 l/100km in the city and 7.1 l/100km combined. Compared to the conventional RAV4, which has a city consumption of 10.7 l/100 km, 8.1 l/100 km in the country, a combined cycle of 9.41 l/100 km, we can say that the Hybrid is quite economical and will quickly justify the cost of fuel .

The acceleration of the hybrid model from 0 to 100 km/h is 8.3 seconds. As you can see, only a gasoline engine and one volume will be available. The main competitors of the RAV4 will be Nissan and Mitsubishi, which will also present their hybrid models in the new year.

Almost every participant in the folk test tried to check the dynamic characteristics of the car, although in the end this did not have the best effect on average fuel consumption. Only a few people decided to try a new style of driving in order to set a record for economy. It turned out to be at the level of 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers. Interestingly, few of the test participants felt the difference between mono- and all-wheel drive, both in acceleration dynamics and in efficiency. Obviously, the best difference between the type of drive will manifest itself in winter on slippery roads.

And the volume lost due to batteries when folding the back row is not critical. Plastic trim must withstand all the hardships of operation. But when passing joints and patches in one car, a knock sometimes appears (perhaps the jack is not fixed or something else), so I give the car a four in this parameter. But everything else is great! Landing in a car and the internal volume of the cabin are sufficient for a person with a height of 180 cm. The doors completely cover the thresholds, which means that the legs will always remain clean. But there is little legroom under the front seats. And a person in massive winter shoes will not be very comfortable. Standard finishing materials of good quality. Only the buttons for switching the operating modes of the hybrid power plant are hidden from the driver's eyes, and you need to get used to this. The suspension is moderately hard. Joints and pits the car passes more quietly and knocked down than mine. She is confidently gaining momentum from the start, although she does it in a specific way. But such dynamics allows you to feel confident on the road. The car also stops confidently and predictably. I was pleased with the fuel consumption of a 2.5-liter gasoline engine in the urban cycle.

The steering is precise and sensitive, and the change in "gears" is generally imperceptible. And in general, acceleration is very smooth and without pecks, which is good news. There are no complaints about the salon, everything is in its place and everything is convenient. I liked the tilt-adjustable backrests of the rear seats and the automatic drive of the trunk lid.

The RAV-4 Hybrid handles well and is easy to handle and has good acceleration dynamics. It is quite comfortable to sit in the cabin, but there is not enough socket in the trunk. The suspension is great, but I found it a bit noisy. In addition, the car is very decently equipped, which is also important. At the driver's workplace, everything is at hand, and only the seat heating buttons are placed at the very bottom of the center console, which is not very convenient. But the heated steering wheel and windshield in the maximum configuration compensate for this small drawback. From my point of view, Toyota RAV-4 Hybrid is the most interesting offer on the Ukrainian automotive market.

For me, this is a new idea of ​​​​Toyota. RAV-4 Hybrid is an interesting, powerful, dynamic, well-controlled and at the same time very economical car. I liked the accessibility of all controls and acoustic comfort. Salon comfortable and with good ergonomics. There is enough space in the car, getting in and out is comfortable, the seats are also not satisfactory. In general, the salon deserves the maximum rating. But the trunk, as for me, is small. The rear sofa does not fold into a flat floor. There is also no way to lay forward the back of the front seat to carry a long load. Management is precise and predictable. Suspension is surprisingly knocked down and energy-intensive. During city driving there are no extraneous noises. Only when braking is an unusual sound heard when the recuperation system is working. Because of it, the braking system requires getting used to. The power plant with a total capacity of 198 hp impresses with its economy. For such an SUV, fuel consumption of 7 liters is very good.

The electric motor is located in the same place as usual - under the hood cover. The planetary gear ensures its connection with the internal combustion engine, forming an integral system, which, in addition to everything, controls the gearbox. The hybrid equipment is equipped exclusively with an E-CVT automatic transmission, which can be manually controlled thanks to forcedly fixed gears.


In total, there are three modes of operation of the unit:EVMode will turn on all-electric traction;ECOMode allows you to reduce the sensitivity of the gas pedal and switch the engine from the gearbox to economy mode;Sport is a familiar sport mode that sharpens all the elements of the car and connects the entire power plant to work.


The orange color of the wires allows you to determine the "connections" of the generating set.

What are other news? The drive system is the same for all versions of the car. In this way, ToyotaRAV4Hybrid uses E-Four technology, which does not have a gimbal. This greatly simplifies the design and allows you to use all the equipment more efficiently. The rear axle is driven by a 68 hp electric motor. It is activated only at the beginning of the movement, or at the moments of slipping or sudden maneuvers.

During the test drive, we did not notice any mind-blowing results. It's still the same regular crossover with confident acceleration. At times, one might get the impression that ToyotaRAV4Hybrid even unnecessarily calm. But it is not so. It's just that the operation of the power plant is configured in such a way as to make as little noise as possible. The acceleration rate to “hundreds” is 8.3 s, while the usual 2.5-liter RAV4 crossover demonstrates 9.4 s. The fuel consumption of the hybrid version is significantly lower than that of the petrol version. Only diesel equipment can compete with a hybrid with an indicator of 8.1 liters per 100 km in the city.

The equipment of hybrids is maximum: LED optics, heated seats and steering wheel, and much more.

We decided to check the veracity of the indicators in the passport and in real conditions in terms of fuel consumption. As expected, the results were a little disappointing: at the claimed 5 l/100 km, we got 8.1 l/100 km. But, in fairness, let's clarify that the test drive was carried out on the track, which means that this is the most difficult area for a hybrid. It is likely that within the city, consumption will decrease. Nevertheless, the expense is acceptable, and indeed ToyotaRAV4Hybrid is much faster than its gasoline counterparts. This is confirmed by the level of equipment with 18-inch wheels and stylized black trim.

The blue color of the logo is one of the distinguishing features of the hybrid RAV4.

It should be noted that the hybrid version of the crossover was already created on the basis of the existing model range. This means that the problems that engineers solved with the placement of batteries are very significant. So, I had to sacrifice a small amount of free space under the rear sofa. Because of this, it will not be possible to completely fold it. Only the backs can be transformed. However, a slight limitation has almost no effect on the volume of the luggage compartment!

And in general, one can only be glad for the current trend in the production of hybrid modifications. After all, this not only helps to reduce consumption, but also expands the capabilities of cars. Therefore, the example has been updated. ToyotaRAV4hybrid. He is the most powerful in the line, and the most environmentally friendly. Moreover, the cost of the new hybrid version will allow you to confidently compete with crossovers of any type, and this is good news!
