Which tires are better, AT or MT? Tires for SUVs. Wide range of applications

The safety of any vehicle on the road depends to a large extent on the quality of the tires and their suitability for the season. If you choose the wrong tires, driving will become dangerous both for the lives of passengers and for other road users. Therefore, let’s try to figure out how AT and MT tires differ, and when they should be used.

In general, all tires can be divided into 3 types:

  • winter;
  • summer;
  • all-season.

But besides this division, wheels can and should also be distinguished within the same season. For example, summer tires differ in purpose, tread type, cross-country ability and other parameters. Depending on the design features, summer tires should be divided into the following types:

  • Highway or road. They have a low tread with large area segments. Such tires have a good roll, which significantly reduces fuel consumption.
  • Universal, aka AT. They have an increased tread and are designed for movement both on highways and off-road.
  • With increased cross-country ability in mud or MT. Equipped with a high tread and a large number of lugs.
  • Tires for extreme off-road driving.

In addition to being divided into types depending on the tread profile and purpose, tires can also be divided into subtypes, which is most likely a marketing ploy by manufacturers.

The first and significant difference between AT and MT tires is the presence in the latter of special holes for mounting studs when driving on off-road, snow and ice.

But, given the chemical composition of rubber and its original purpose for driving in the summer (its increased elasticity), it is highly not recommended to use it in the winter season. Here we mean winters colder than -0 0 C. Although many modern tire shops will quite agree to install studs. This will at least save you on icy conditions.

AT tires

The manufacturer recommends using AT summer tires in cases where 20% of the car is not on asphalt. But you should understand that versatility does not always save you from a deep mud hole in the countryside, not to mention snow drifts, when the tires also become oak.

Some of the most prominent representatives of the AT series tires are BF Goodrich AT, ProComp, Cooper Discoverer M+S. Each of these brands has its own characteristics and disadvantages, which vary depending on the composition of the rubber mixture, its physical parameters, and so on.

MT tires

According to their technical parameters, MT tires are much more suitable for off-road driving. If the composition of the rubber mixture is identical compared to AT, then the profile will differ significantly. MT tires from AT can be distinguished by eye; deep lugs of different sizes are clearly visible in their tread, which allows the wheel to reliably dig into the ground and give the car acceleration.

One of the most popular representatives of MT tires on the Russian market is Hankook. Where AT wheels would require all-wheel drive, MT wheels only require one drive axle.

Unlike many other models for SUVs in the All Terrain category, the Toyo Open Country A/T Plus all-season tire was created taking into account the preferences, first of all, of European motorists. This allows it to demonstrate good handling on asphalt roads with excellent performance on unpaved surfaces.

Wide range of applications

The versatility of this tire is largely due to the use of a tread, the running part of which is made in a symmetrical design. Like many Toyo passenger models, it contains several functional areas. The outer edges of the tread, where many wide cross-directional blocks are located, give confident behavior on unpaved surfaces. This manifests itself especially clearly on earthen and sandy soils with reduced bearing capacity. On such a surface, the shoulder blocks act as lugs.

In turn, the inner part of the tread has a different functionality. It is to ensure stable handling, braking efficiency and acoustic comfort. All these problems are solved using three longitudinal ribs formed from blocks. The distance between them is minimal, and they themselves have massive dimensions, increasing the area of the contact patch and preventing deformation during movement. At the same time, the arrangement of the blocks offset relative to each other reduces the risk of resonant noise, which increases acoustic comfort, primarily inside the car interior.

Optimized compound

Especially for this tire, the composition of the tread rubber mixture was significantly changed. The key innovation was the advent of polymers. A complex of chemicals called Long Life, interacting at the molecular level with other components, provides the compound with increased tensile strength and tensile strength. This property provides the tread with integrity when driving at high speeds, and off-road it provides the same advantage, but under the impact of uneven surfaces.

It is worth noting that the silica content remained at the same elevated level. The use of polymers ensures the homogeneity of the rubber mixture. This allows the tire to literally stick to the wet surface, tightly covering even the smallest irregularities.

Durability with low weight

The high performance of the tire is largely due to the optimized design of the carcass and belt. Both components received significant reinforcement in the form of additional cords. Thanks to the use of synthetic materials and advanced winding methods, the appearance of these components has not led to a significant increase in the weight of the tire, which cannot be said about its load-bearing capacity and impact resistance. Both properties have increased, so much so that for the markets of some countries the Japanese manufacturer offers extended warranty periods for this model.

Key features of the Toyo Open Country A/T Plus tire

— universal scope of application thanks to the symmetrical tread, effective on any type of coating;
— dividing the running part of the tread into functional sections improves the various driving characteristics of the tire without compromising each other;
— the carcass and breaker reinforced with additional cords provide the tire with off-road reliability

January 31, 2018. Review and rating of all-season tires 2018.

Today Vilka will delight its regular customers and other visitors to the online resource with an interesting review of five pairs of tires from well-established manufacturers, whose products are most often purchased by SUV owners.

First, let's deal with the strange misconception of novice motorists who believe that any tires are suitable for off-roading, the main thing is that the tires are thicker and the brand is familiar. No. When choosing tires for an SUV, the first thing to take into account is their purpose for a specific road surface. For this purpose, manufacturers specially marked their products with the following abbreviations:

  • HP or High Performance. This means that the tires are intended for high-speed driving (no more than 210 km/h) and strictly on asphalt.
  • HT or Half Terrain. This marking is given to tires that will be used on asphalt surfaces, low-quality roads and unpaved surfaces. They cannot be driven off-road. The maximum speed of movement is no more than 180 km/h.
  • AT or All Terrain- the main topic of our review. The rubber is designed to travel on roads of varying quality, which is ideal for rural areas. With their help, you can cross simple off-road areas and maintain a speed of no more than 140 km/h on the highway.
  • MT or Mud Terrain. Used for off-road driving and dirt roads. It is difficult to move on asphalt on them - the car handles poorly, and such tires wear out quickly. You can drive along the highway with more or less comfortable sensations at a speed of no higher than 80 km/h.

At the same time, the types of tires can be distinguished by eye by their tread pattern: the degree of depth and aggressiveness - the higher it is, the better the rubber will perform off-road, but the less comfortable it will be when moving.

However, let's go back to the review of five pairs of tires. The list included:

  • BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO2;
  • Hankook Dynapro AT-M RF10;
  • Cooper Discoverer AT3;
  • Nokian Retiiva AT Plus;
  • Yokohama Geolander A/T G015.

And now we will look at them in more detail.

Review of the best tires for SUVs and crossovers AT

B.F. Goodrich- the brand, which once belonged to the American company Goodrich Corporation, was bought by another manufacturer of car tires - the French Michelin. And it cannot be said that this did not benefit him. On the contrary, the French manufacturer, known for tires for motorcycles and motorsports, has not changed its tradition of introducing innovative technologies in the purchased brand.

Advantages of the tire:

  • excellent grip on wet roads in all conditions;
  • high strength and reliability;
  • minimal noise when moving;
  • long period of operation.

The Nokian brand belongs to the Finnish tire manufacturing company Nokian Tires. The latter specializes in the production of tires for use in regions with difficult climatic conditions. It was the Nokian Tires company that released the world's first winter tires, and on the 80th anniversary of this significant event it showed another new product with retractable studs.

Advantages of the tire:

  • good grip on wet roads;
  • high controllability and stability;
  • reduced internal heating;
  • increased service life.

The Yokohama brand, like Geolander, belongs to the Japanese company Yokohama Rubber Company of the same name, which produces aircraft, automobile and racing tires. In its products, the manufacturer uses the latest technological developments, applying innovative approaches and solutions. The company is also an official partner of the Russian circuit racing series.

The model is intended for the summer season. Especially for these tires, the company has developed a special mixture “nanoBlend Compound”, which includes silicate, orange oil and universal polymers. Thanks to this, the sliding moment during ice conditions is reduced and there is no deformation of the rubber itself. Advantages of the tire:

  • excellent grip and smooth ride in all conditions;
  • increased strength and wear resistance;
  • excellent handling at high speed;
  • long period of use.

This is the end of the review of five pairs of tires from Fork. If you are interested in any model for an SUV, then on our website you can purchase it in the right size right now. Also on their pages there is information with a complete overview of the characteristics. We are waiting for your requests!

An SUV is a powerful and heavy vehicle, so you need to choose tires carefully. We have compiled a review of the best tires for such cars, which have different advantages depending on external factors. The rating includes high-speed and off-road tires, for winter roads and summer trips, all-season tires, in a word - for all occasions. The choice of tires and its position in the list is based on the characteristics, recommendations of specialists (racing drivers) and reviews of owners with practical operating experience.

The best studded tires for SUVs

Such tires are needed by SUV owners who have to drive not only where municipal services clear snow, but weather conditions are not an obstacle to going on business. Below are the best studded SUV tires that took part in our rating.

3 Pirelli Ice Zero

The most wear-resistant
Country: Italy
Average price: RUB 5,337.
Rating (2019): 4.6

The Pirelli brand remains true to itself - its Ice Zero winter tires have high performance qualities and have an additional significant advantage among competitors - an affordable price. Both in the name and in appearance of the tread it becomes clear - ice hummocks on the highway and rolled crust are its element. It brakes excellently on snowy surfaces, in melted “porridge”, but on bare asphalt it shows itself justifiably clumsy due to the studs, especially when maneuvering.

There are practically no negative aspects in the reviews of SUV drivers who chose Pirelli Ice Zero. Even the noise (they quite seriously “hum”, like a wheel bearing) of this studded tire, in gratitude for the amazing stability and predictability in harsh winter conditions, owners do not dare call it a disadvantage, attributing this property rather to the characteristics of the tire. It’s not just the tread that makes noise (large blocks along the edges of the pattern with wide drainage grooves and covered with spikes and lamellas). The tire itself is quite rigid and durable, which provides another advantage in the form of a longer service life.

2 Matador MP 30 Sibir Ice 2 SUV

The optimum ratio of price and quality
A country: Slovakia (produced in Russia)
Average price: 6,037 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

In terms of their characteristics, the tires are not at all inferior to more popular brands, and the affordable price has an impact on SUV owners, the power of which should not be underestimated. The tread pattern is very similar to the previously popular Gislaved Nord Frost 5 tire (no longer produced), and provides good handling on winter roads. In addition, the rubber composition allows you to significantly increase the service life (unless you drive in the summer).

Reviews from owners of this studded tire indicate a noticeable but fairly moderate noise level - a factor that should not be considered a drawback, because for tires studded with metal bars throughout the tread it is very difficult to maintain low noise levels. It brakes excellently, provides good stability on ice, and “rows” on rolled snow as if it were on asphalt. SUV owners rightly consider the choice in favor of Matador Sibir Ice to be correct and pragmatic.

1 GOODYEAR Ultra Grip Ice Arctic SUV

Better grip
Country: USA
Average price: RUB 9,585.
Rating (2019): 5.0

A very unusual tread pattern allows studded winter tires to literally “squeeze” into any surface and provide the highest possible coefficient of road grip. The studs are not located randomly, as it might seem at first glance, but according to strict computer calculations, allowing for stability on icy areas in all situations on the road. The drainage channels are wide enough to cope not only with water, but also with slush, so the SUV never gets buried, but “shoves” through frozen snow or melting slush equally effectively.

The spikes and the peculiarity of the tread make the rubber quite noisy - many owners in their reviews talk about this, probably the only drawback. In the city on asphalt, the tire does not behave as effectively as in snowfalls, severe frosts, on icy sections of roads, etc. In the above conditions, it demonstrates unique cross-country ability, stability and controllability at the same time. These characteristics allowed Ultra Grip Ice Arctic SUV to become the leader in the rating in the studded tire category.

The best winter non-studded tires for SUVs

These tires are chosen by owners of SUVs whose main mileage occurs on city roads or federal highways. The most effective tire models for the specified conditions are presented in this part of our rating.

3 MAXXIS SS-01 Presa SUV

Best price
Country: China
Average price: 5,058 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.2

By choosing Chinese tires, many SUV owners save considerable amounts. At the same time, the majority believes that the quality will be quite low (they are guided by price and existing stereotypes). MAXXIS MA-SLW is the best winter tire from the Middle Kingdom that will make owners think differently.

The deep tread with wide drainage grooves is studded with multi-directional sipes. They provide good grip on icy surfaces and wet roads. Large lugs on the sides prevent you from getting stuck in snow and moderate off-road conditions. Owners note low noise levels in reviews. At a speed of more than 140 km/h, it begins to “yaw” - you have to steer. It would not be entirely correct to classify this feature of a studless tire as a disadvantage (considering the price), but it is definitely not suitable for those who like to drive fast.

2 Hankook Tire i*pike RW11

Precision in control
A country:
Average price: 7,260 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

Any SUV with Hankook Tire Winter i*Pike tires demonstrates excellent handling on winter roads. Despite the fact that these tires are studless, grip on icy areas allows you to confidently maneuver, just like on regular asphalt. This effect is achieved by additional cavity recesses of the drainage channels, reminiscent of the suction cups of an octopus. It is thanks to their work that the contact patch is almost completely dried out, and the tire literally “grows” into the surface.

Those owners who have tested the characteristics of the Hankook Tire i*pike in real conditions will under no circumstances install studded tires on their car, which cannot even come close to providing such a combination of comfort and safety. In their reviews, drivers highly appreciate the steering precision and wear resistance, which is unique for a winter road.

1 NOKIAN NORDMAN RS2 SUV

Lowest noise level
Country: Finland
Average price: 5,288 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

Winter friction tires created and released for the 2015/2016 season. Users who have tested the kit in action note the high resistance of the rubber to drift on snowy road surfaces. This is achieved due to a well-designed tread pattern, cut in such a way as to improve the removal of snow and slush from under the wheel. However, excellent conditions in one component significantly weaken the other - the Nokian Nordman RS2 is not designed for driving on ice. If, when driving at low speed in a straight line, the car still somehow holds on, then even a smooth turn into a turn can turn into an unwanted skid. Increase the speed, and problems with ice passage will become even more noticeable (possibly even fatal).

Advantages:

  • deep tread grooves remove snow and dirt and provide increased wheel grip;
  • tenacious when driving on a snowy road, easy to get out of ruts;
  • softness is at a decent level - in severe frost the rubber does not “harden”.

Flaws:

  • They are not at all designed for driving on ice.

The best summer tires for SUVs

Summer is a time for vacations and countryside recreation. This means that you will have to drive much more often and further than usual, so the SUV must have not just good, but also moderately comfortable tires. The best examples of such tires are collected in this category.

3 Continental ContiCrossContact LX2

The most durable
Country: Germany
Average price: RUB 9,034.
Rating (2019): 4.6

From 2013 to this day, summer tires Continental ContiCrossContact LX 2 remain relevant for Russian road reality. Drivers for the most part note the hardness of the rubber when choosing, but during installation and running-in, all problems and accompanying experiences become a thing of the past. The tires run well on rough roads (which, alas, is not uncommon) and soften the impacts caused by a very expensive (in terms of repairs) suspension. If the driver’s priority is driving on light and medium off-road conditions, as well as driving mainly in urban areas, then ContiCrossContact LX 2 is the ideal choice. If this is more intercity travel on highways with high flow speeds, then you should resort to choosing more specialized models.

Advantages:

  • optimal rigidity;
  • does not have a tendency to “fly off” the rut - the accuracy of driving through such sections depends entirely on the driver;
  • reinforced cord for driving on average off-road conditions.

Flaws:

  • there is a feeling of “swimming” at high speeds;
  • absence of outlet grooves on the tread from the center to the outside.

2 GOODYEAR WRANGLER AT/SA

Reliable grip on any road
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 7,622.
Rating (2019): 4.7

Decent tires for the summer season. Craftsmen from Goodyear deliberately gave the Wrangler a more aggressive off-road look in order to “close” two niches at once with one product. On the one hand, the driving performance meets city standards - the tires do not hum during acceleration, hold the road perfectly and, thanks to the high tread, feel great in both dry and rainy weather. On the other hand, the rubber is clearly ready for off-road driving - the same tread (or, more precisely, the geometry of the grooves and height) effectively removes dirt and water from the contact zone, does not clog and generally feels in place. For powerful SUVs, this means only one thing: Wranglers can conquer medium and difficult off-road areas.

At the same time, the owners in their reviews note the low noise level, as well as excellent grip on the summer road, including during rain. Despite the universal cross-country ability and balanced price of the rubber, the owners believe that the manufacturer should have strengthened the side part - when maneuvering an SUV or at high speed, the tire becomes a roll, and this can lead to loss of stability and control.

1 BRIDGESTONE ECOPIA EP850

Better handling
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 7,309.
Rating (2019): 5.0

Having replaced "Dueler 683", "Ecopia 850" continued the work not without success and deservedly gained the love of numerous users. The developers from Bridgestone tried to create a model that combines softness sufficient for city roads and real off-road aggressiveness. It turned out well: the wear-resistant rubber compound and the original tread pattern made it possible not only to add points to cross-country ability, but also to achieve a reduction in fuel consumption by an average of four percent (relative to the Dueler H/L 683). In addition, SUV drivers unanimously report improved braking on road surfaces, especially wet ones. As a result: we have excellent summer tires at a price that is quite acceptable for a wide range of consumers.

Advantages:

  • improved braking performance (especially on treacherous wet roads);
  • efficient fuel consumption;
  • low noise level (achieved due to balanced softness);
  • improved drainage from the contact area between the tire and the coating.

Flaws:

  • the thin side is prone to cuts.

The best all-season tires for SUVs

Especially for those who do not want to “change” their SUV from summer to winter tires twice a year and vice versa, a line of tires is produced for use in all conditions. Our rating presents the best all-season tire models in the SUV category.

3 MICHELIN LATITUDE CROSS

High wear resistance
Country: France
Average price: RUB 9,213.
Rating (2019): 4.4

All-season tires from Michelin, developed and put into operation in 2009. Despite the widespread rapid development of production technologies, the “old” concept still meets unspoken quality standards. This is not surprising: the tires were developed primarily for driving in the city and light off-road conditions (just right for a country house), and in this segment no special improvements are required. The softness of the rubber and the asymmetrical tread pattern provide reliable grip on the road surface, regardless of its condition. However, behind the plus lies the most significant drawback of the tires: they are ineffective (and even dangerous) in the harsh winter conditions that are typical for most of Russia.

Advantages:

  • excellent cross-country ability in light off-road areas;
  • balanced size of the tire contact patch with the surface – has a positive effect on handling;
  • increased wear resistance (according to users, the resource lasts for several years).

Flaws:

  • “freeze” in severe frost, which leads to a sharp drop in all performance qualities.

2 CORDIANT OFF ROAD

Better cross-country ability
Country Russia
Average price: RUB 5,381.
Rating (2019): 4.5

A serious all-season tire for real off-road conquerors. One look at the tires is enough to understand that using such a model for driving around the city means wasting its potential. The magnificent appearance is complemented by crazy cross-country ability on clay and sand - not up to the hub, of course, but it climbs where the vast majority of competitors will not even reach. Unfortunately, endowing tires with qualities “by vocation” negatively affects their behavior in city and highway conditions. There is an increase in noise levels, instability when entering sharp turns due to the height of the tread and an increase in fuel consumption due to the large mass. Thus, Cordiant Off Road is perhaps the most ideal off-road option of all those presented in the rating.

Advantages:

  • off-road as the first element (excellent cross-country ability);
  • the high tread and deep grooves serve as a good drainage of dirt and water to the outside and do not clog;
  • add a soft ride on uneven roads;
  • large margin of safety (rolls back from 70-80 thousand kilometers).

Flaws:

  • are hesitant when taking sharp turns;
  • increase fuel consumption;
  • They make a lot of noise when driving on asphalt.

1 VIATTI BOSCO S/T V-526

Best price
Country: Italy/Germany
Average price: 5,630 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.5

Budget winter Velcro from the young European company Viatti rightfully occupy a place in the ranking of the best. There are no frills in production - only traditional, carefully tested concepts and successful competitive models taken as a basis. It is quite possible that the appearance is not bright, does not attract attention and does not add sophistication to the appearance of the car - but the driving performance is comparable to top-end premium class models. The tread is cut in such a way that it quickly removes snow from under the middle part of the wheel, gives controllability and behaves very tenaciously in the ruts.

Owners like the durability of the rubber, despite its softness (even in severe frosts it does not harden). The last feature determines the low noise level - this is an indicator for SUV tires. In addition to admiration for the budget cost and the presence of even some shortage (closer to winter, although the tire is positioned as all-season), in reviews the owners note rather uncertain behavior in deep snow - this is due to the lack of powerful lugs along the edges of the tread.

The best mud tires for SUVs

Especially for those who use SUVs for their intended purpose, we present a rating of tires that can turn a car of this class into a real all-terrain vehicle that will be able to overcome muddy sections of washed-out dirt roads, black earth fields, forest paths and sand dunes.

3 Hankook Tire Dynapro MT RT03

Wear resistance
A country: South Korea (Produced in Hungary, China)
Average price: 10,490 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

It is the characteristics of the tire that determine the degree of cross-country ability of an SUV, and the Hankook Tire Dynapro MT RT03 has all the signs that off-road spaces do not pose insurmountable obstacles for it. The reinforced side part (multi-layer construction) goes into powerful lugs located along the edge of the tread. They will prevent you from getting stuck in a mud bath on difficult sections of the route. The central pattern area ensures precise maneuvering and highway stability.

Only by “shoeing” the SUV in the Dynapro MT RT03, the owners were able to understand what real cross-country ability is. In their reviews, they also note the best wear resistance of rubber - for every 20 thousand kilometers, no more than 10% is worn out. This is a very good indicator that ensures many years of operation and fully justifies the cost of the tire. Rubber behaves well in summer and in the off-season, but at the first frost it becomes uncontrollable, and is not suitable for winter trips in the northern regions of Russia, despite the fact that it is considered all-season.

2 Comforser CF3000

Best price
Country: China
Average price: 8,400 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

This manufacturer appeared only five years ago, but in a matter of months it was able to confidently establish itself on the international market. It offers tire products for SUVs, the quality of which completely breaks previously established stereotypes and prejudices towards Chinese goods. The all-season mud tire participating in our rating has a directional pattern with massive deep tread blocks. The sipes on the outer lugs extending onto the sidewall of the tire provide excellent off-road performance and stability not only on wet asphalt, but also when driving on icy areas.

The owners who chose the Comforser CF3000 are very pleased and believe that they made the right decision. In addition to the interesting price and the ability to ride in winter and summer on one set of tires, owners in their reviews note the sufficient elasticity of the rubber, sensitivity in handling and the absence of any rolliness when cornering - the sidewall is rigid, it is difficult to damage it. In addition, the tires are not at all afraid of ruts and perfectly evacuate water from the contact patch, providing confident grip on difficult areas. High wear resistance is evidenced by the fact that few of the owners have already worn out their tread life.

1 BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2

The most durable
Country: USA
Average price: 13,850 rub.
Rating (2019): 5.0

Any SUV on these tires (and even more so a crossover) turns into a real tractor. To get stuck on it off-road, you will have to try hard, because even one wheel, “grabbing” a slightly harder section of soil, can pull a heavy car out of its mud captivity. All design features of this tire are aimed at improving cross-country ability. The tire can maintain a low pressure mode (0.5 bar), which allows the SUV to move effectively on loose sandy soils and marshy areas.

Owners who leave positive reviews about the capabilities of these all-season tires highlight their high strength most of all - it is almost impossible to puncture or cut them (but there will definitely be drivers who can do this). There are also warnings in the reviews: in winter (in most regions of the country, with the exception of its eastern part), it is better not to drive on these tires - they are completely uncontrollable on ice, the car easily skids and turns out of the blue.

The best road tires for SUVs

Not everyone likes to drive their SUVs through mud obstacles. Many owners operate these powerful cars exclusively on asphalt highways and city roads, demonstrating the high speed qualities of their cars. If there is a need to drive onto a dirt road, it will only be for a short time - when traveling out of town, to a holiday village, etc. It is for this type of operation that the tires presented in this category are designed.

3 MICHELIN Latitude Sport 3

Better grip on summer roads
Country: France
Average price: RUB 14,226.
Rating (2019): 4.7

A hard summer tire from one of the most famous tire manufacturers didn't take first place in this category only because of its cost. However, it is one of the best tires for SUVs whose owners prefer aggressive and fast driving. Despite its softness (especially after warming up), the tire retains its shape thanks to the double carcass. It allows you to effectively maneuver at speed and make breathtaking turns that cannot be replicated on other tires.

They hold the road perfectly, have acoustic comfort, and are highly sensitive to the slightest movements of the steering wheel - this is not the entire list of positive ratings that owners share in their reviews. At the same time, many drivers note a deterioration in the performance of the Latitude Sport 3 as the temperature drops to zero - these tires are designed exclusively for summer. In such conditions, it is best to switch to winter tires in advance.

2 Toyo Proxes ST III

The directional and even aggressive tread pattern at first glance speaks of the rapid “temper” of the Toyo Proxes ST III summer tire. The side blocks are also deployed along the way and perform a double function: they stabilize wheel rotation at high speed, thereby determining high directional stability, and provide excellent traction when maneuvering. In addition, the rubber compound contains components that have a positive effect on the resistance of summer tires to rapid wear.

Owners in their reviews give positive assessments to the braking characteristics of the tires - despite the decent weight of the SUV, they demonstrate high efficiency, including on wet asphalt. Summer is the most suitable period for walks in nature, when part of the path may lie through dirt roads with mud “traps”. But even in such conditions (of course, we are talking about moderate off-road) Toyo Proxes copes with the assigned tasks perfectly.

1 BRIDGESTONE DUELER H/P SPORT

High precision in control
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 11,417.
Rating (2019): 5.0

Bridgestone Dueler H/P Sport is a model of summer tires from ten years ago. Since that time, the Japanese company has managed to develop more than a dozen concepts and successful tires, but “Duelers” are still in demand, including in the domestic market. What's good about them? Definitely controllability. To the detriment of the comfort of a silent ride, the Japanese were able to create rubber that is unique in its driving performance, which does not care about rutting or hydroplaning on asphalt and unpaved surfaces. Minor difficulties may arise when driving through very muddy areas, but here everything depends on the experience and skill of the driver.

Advantages:

  • exceptional handling;
  • not amenable to hydroplaning;
  • sections of the rut pass smoothly;
  • high service life.

Flaws:

  • after getting from muddy areas onto asphalt, slipping is observed;
  • strong hum and buzzing when driving fast is a minus for comfort.

Do you really need AT (All-Terrain) mud tires? That is, life is connected with extreme sports, sports, and frequent off-road trips? If this is the case, then be sure to study the rating of AT tires, understand their specifics and purchase a product that is beneficial to you. If only 5-7% of your trips are devoted to off-roading, then is it worth spending so much money and purchasing AT class tires? Firstly, tires of this class feel uncomfortable on the asphalt, ride hard and are a little noisy. Only when going off-road with difficult sections do All-Terrain tires perform their functions in full. Secondly, there is excessive consumption of gasoline when the car travels on asphalt for most of its trips.

Tires marked AT

And before you go shopping for new tires for an SUV, analyze your way of life, determine your plans for the future, admit what role a car plays in your life - a symbol of prestige, a means of transportation or a way to discover a mysterious world. And having already set your priorities, study the rating of AT tires for SUVs, understand whether they are suitable for the car.

What are AT tires for?

Which AT tire models are included in the rating?

Advantages of Toyo Open Country AT tires

  • Powerful off-road tread design
  • Maximum resistance to aquaplaning
  • Possibility of self-cleaning of the tread while driving
  • Damage resistance, excellent protection systems and rubber composition
  • Allows you to safely maneuver through snow, sand, and mud.

Thus, for the indicated wide range of advantages, Toyo Open Country AT is included in the rating of off-road tires and occupies a leading position.
