The popular South Korean automobile company continues to develop off-road models. An example is the KIA Sportage, which according to the classification manufacturers classify as K1. Stable and high sales of the model in the world confirm the correctness of the chosen course, especially since the cost of the car is attractive in comparison with its competitors.

The off-road past of the modern car

The history of the KIA Sportage begins in 1992, when the car company began making a new car based on the Mazda Bongo.

The first generation SUV, slightly awkward by modern proportions, rolled off the assembly line in 1993. At the same time, sales began in car dealerships.

Until 1998, it was possible to buy a KIA manufactured at the Karmann assembly plant located in Osnabrück, Germany. The five-seater car received front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, depending on the configuration. It was designed for five people in the cabin. There was also a weakly popular pickup version.

Traction was provided by one of three gasoline or one of two diesel engines. As a transmission, the car was equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission. Since 1998, all production has been transferred to the Korean peninsula.

The premiere of the second generation KIA Sportage was scheduled for 2004. It took place at the Paris Automobile Exhibition. Since the design has been improved, most of the components and systems had to be developed completely from scratch. Based on their characteristics of SUV models, the second generation moved into the category of crossovers in terms of its parameters.

The manufacturing company produced the version until 2010. Assembly facilities have since spread to 7 countries, including Russia. The domestic automobile plant in Kaliningrad was assembling the SUV.

During this period, engineers and designers prepared two restyled versions:

• the first one came out in 2007;
• the second was released in 2009.

The basic platform served as the basis for the release of another Korean-made model, the Hyundai Tucson, based on this technology.

The third generation was presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010. The new Sportage 3 also became the base model for another Korean bestseller, the Hyundai ix35. The assembly of the “troika” was carried out in several countries:

Official dealers offered to visit their branches, where the restyled KIA Sportage car had been offered since 2014. The pretty metallic color was complemented by excellent technical characteristics, which included:

• improved aerodynamic properties;
• a couple of drive types: front and 4x4;
• transmission to choose from: 6-speed automatic or 5-speed manual.

Specialists led by the authoritative Peter Schreyer were responsible for the design. As a result, success resulted in significant sales throughout the world, including Russia.

The European edition of Auto Bild conducted a long race of one hundred thousand km, in which the third generation received the maximum score.

Also, statistics report that with such a car, purchased on credit or in cash, car owners very rarely contacted official dealers with complaints and service centers for repairs.

Thanks to engineers, under the hood of the fourth generation there may be one of the following engine options:

• 1.6 GDI - 1.6 l, power 132 hp;
• NU 2.0 Gasoline - 2 l, power 155 hp;
• 1.7 CRDi Diesel - 1.7 l, power 115 hp;
• 2.0 CRDi Diesel - 2 l, power 185 hp.

Drive type: full or front-wheel drive. The transmission can be 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic transmission, as well as 7 DCT. Only three official power plant options are currently available for Russian car dealerships: turbocharged gasoline and diesel, or naturally aspirated gasoline.

At the international exhibition in Frankfurt, which took place at the end of September 2015, the Kia company held an official presentation of the compact crossover Sportage of the next (fourth) generation. What is noteworthy is that the Koreans, impatient to “boast the fruits of their labors,” declassified the appearance (and then the technical details) without waiting for the official premiere: thus, it was already known “in absentia” that the car had radically changed its image (while retaining recognizable proportions, it grew in size, received a completely new interior and modernized equipment).

The appearance of the “fourth Sportage” was created with an eye on the conceptual model “Provo” (introduced in 2013) - at least, that’s what they say in the company itself.

The front of the crossover looks beautiful and bold thanks to the “two-story” design with the predatory look of the optics, the wide mouth of the radiator grille and the LED “trunks” of the fog lights in the front bumper.
The sporty appearance of the KIA Sportage body in the 4th generation is created by a sloping roof, a high window sill line and “muscular” wheel arches that accommodate “rollers” measuring from 16 to 19 inches.

The lean rear end is distinguished by stylish lights with a U-shaped pattern and a pair of oval exhaust pipes integrated into the bumper.

As a result of the generation change, the Kia Sportage added 40 mm in length - it grew to 4480 mm, but kept the height and width unchanged - 1635 mm and 1855 mm, respectively. And the wheelbase was “thrown” an additional 30 mm – bringing its length to 2670 mm.

The interior of the 4th generation KIA Sportage is made based on its “big brother - Sorento” in the “Prime” version and is characterized by a stylish multifunctional steering wheel, a laconic instrument cluster with an on-board computer “scoreboard” and a central console rotated 10 degrees towards the driver, which is crowned by a screen multimedia with a diagonal of 7 or 8 inches. At the bottom of the dashboard there is a climate control unit and buttons for auxiliary organs.

The interior of the SUV received additional millimeters of space: 19 mm were added to the legs of the front passengers, and 16 mm were added above the heads of the second row passengers. The “fourth Sportage” acquired well-profiled front seats and a comfortable rear sofa. In addition, finishing materials and sound insulation of the cabin have been improved - internal noise has been reduced to 63 dB.

The luggage compartment of the crossover can accommodate 503 liters of useful luggage (versus the previous 465 liters), and a repair kit is hidden under its raised floor. The spare wheel reduces the useful volume to 491 liters. The “hold” became wider by 35 mm, and the loading height was reduced by 47 mm.

Specifications. Russian consumers of the 4th generation Kia Sportage are offered with three power units – two petrol and one diesel:

• By default, the crossover is equipped with a 2.0-liter MPI naturally aspirated gasoline “four” with a 16-valve timing system, D-CVVT continuously variable valve timing technology, distributed injection and an intake manifold with variable geometry, producing 150 “horses” at 5200 rpm and 192 Nm peak thrust at 4000 rpm.
  The engine works in unison with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, providing the car with acceleration to the first hundred in 10.5-11.6 seconds, a top speed of 180-186 km/h and an average consumption of 7.9-8.3 liters in combined conditions.
• An alternative for it is a 1.6-liter T-GDI gasoline four-cylinder engine of the Gamma family with an aluminum block, direct fuel injection, a turbocharger combined with an intake manifold, and exhaust and intake phase shifters. Its potential is 177 “mares” at 5500 rpm and 265 Nm of available torque at 1500-4500 rpm.
  In combination with it, a 7-band DCT “robot” and an all-wheel drive transmission work, thanks to which the SUV takes 9.1 seconds to “shoot” up to 100 km/h, the peak capability is 201 km/h and the fuel “appetite” does not exceed 7.5 liters per cycle "city/highway".
• And finally, the third option is a 2.0-liter CRDi turbodiesel with a 16-valve timing belt, turbocharger and Common Rail fuel supply, producing 185 horsepower at 4000 rpm and 400 Nm of maximum thrust at 1750-2750 rpm.
  It is installed in conjunction with a 6-speed automatic transmission and drive wheels of both axles. In asphalt disciplines, the “diesel Korean” shows itself on the good side: 9.5 seconds for acceleration to 100 km/h, 201 km/h peak speed and 6.3 liters of consumption in mixed driving mode.

Dynamax all-wheel drive on the “fourth” Kia Sportage is implemented according to a typical scheme for crossovers - by default the car is front-wheel drive, and the WIA Magna Powertrain clutch automatically transfers up to 50% of the traction to the rear axle wheels if necessary.

The 4th generation Sportage is based on a modernized platform from the previous model with an independent architecture for each axle: a classic MacPherson strut suspension at the front and a multi-link design at the rear. The steering system is represented by a rack and pinion mechanism, on the shaft of which an electric power steering is mounted, and all wheels are equipped with disc brakes (the front ones are supplemented with ventilation) and modern “assistants” (ABS, EBD, etc.).

The crossover will also be offered with a “sporty” version of the GT Line, the features of which will be R-MDPS steering with variable tooth pitch on the rack, modified suspension characteristics and a more efficient braking package.

Options and prices. In Russian dealerships, the fourth incarnation of the Sportage is available in Classic, Comfort, Luxe, Prestige, Premium and GT-Line trim levels.
The basic version of the crossover in 2016 is offered at a price of 1,189,900 rubles, and the list of its equipment includes: six airbags, electric windows, air conditioning, ABS+ESC, audio system, 16-inch alloy wheels, electric mirrors and an assistance system when starting uphill.
The minimum price of an all-wheel drive SUV is 1,479,900 rubles, the “top” Premium modification is 1,929,900 rubles, and the sporty GT-Line version is 2,069,900 rubles. The most “sophisticated” car has: a leather interior, parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, a multimedia center, an automatic parking system, a multimedia center, front seats with ventilation, heating and electric drive, as well as a host of other modern equipment.

At the rear, the car stands out with stylish narrow lights with a chrome trim between them, another trunk lid with a large spoiler and a redesigned bumper. At the same time, for the new 2019 Kia Sportage model, the GT Line version was offered for the first time, sporting 19-inch wheels, LED foglights, a diffuser, dual exhaust pipes and a retuned suspension.

In the fall of the eighteenth, the Korean manufacturer presented a restyled version of the crossover, which received a different optics design, redesigned bumpers, a new radiator grille, as well as sections of fog lights at the front “cut” in half. The car also acquired several additional body color options and wheels available in diameters from 16 to 19″.

The interior of the Kia Sportage 4 received improved finishing materials, a different front panel, a new steering wheel and instruments, as well as a redesigned center console. The multimedia system screen framed by air ducts is reminiscent of a similar solution on both its predecessor and the larger SUV.

Like its co-platform counterpart, the new Kia Sportage 2019 turned out to be slightly larger in size than the previous generation car. The overall length increased to 4,480 mm (+ 40), the wheelbase increased by 30 mm - to 2,670, and the width (1,855) and height (1,635) remained the same. Ground clearance (clearance) is stated at 182 millimeters.

The trunk volume has increased to 503 liters versus 465 previously, the front overhang has become slightly larger (by 20 mm), while the rear overhang has decreased by 10 mm. The manufacturer also reports an improvement in the aerodynamic drag coefficient, which has decreased from 0.35 to 0.33, which made the car a little more economical.

The car can also boast of increased torsional rigidity of the body by 39% compared to its predecessor, and the front and rear suspensions have been reconfigured (there are McPherson struts in the front, and an independent spring multi-link is installed in the rear, disc brakes are all around). All these changes made it possible to reduce noise and vibration levels, as well as improve the handling of the SUV.

As for the technical stuffing, the Koreans abandoned the previous 1.7-liter CRDi U2 turbodiesel in favor of a new 1.6-liter U3 family unit with a urea exhaust gas aftertreatment system. This engine complies with Euro 6d-TEMP eco-standards and, depending on the degree of boost, develops 115 or 136 hp. A more powerful version can be ordered with a seven-speed preselective automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

And the new KIA Sportage 2019 has acquired an EcoDynamics+ version. The latter is a so-called “mild hybrid”, which involves the presence of a compact starter-generator with a belt drive from the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine. During acceleration, the electric motor produces a modest 14 hp, and during braking it works as a generator, storing energy in a miniature lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 0.46 kWh located under the trunk floor. The system operates at 48 volts.

But all this is not relevant for the Russian market - our base engine for the Sportage is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine with a power of 150 hp. (192 Nm), which is available with a six-speed manual and automatic transmission, both options can be ordered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. There is also a turbocharged version with a 1.6 turbo engine producing 177 horsepower and 265 Nm, which is equipped with a 7-speed DCT robot with two clutches and AWD.

This option reaches a hundred from a standstill in 9.1 seconds, and its maximum speed reaches 201 km/h. True, soon this will not be so relevant, since this version in Russia will be replaced by an American modification with a 2.4-liter GDI (184 hp) and a traditional six-speed automatic transmission, but the 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel CRDi will remain in I'm building.

The latter for the Sportage in a new body is available in output options of 136 (373 Nm) and 185 horsepower (400 Nm), but we only offer a more powerful option (with automatic transmission and all-wheel drive), which provides the car with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/ h in 9.5 seconds, and the average fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 6.3 liters per hundred, in the city - 7.9, on the highway - 5.3 liters.

Today, the price of the new Kia Sportage 2019 starts from 1,329,900 rubles for a car with a basic 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine, 6-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. The version with automatic transmission costs from 1,554,900, for all-wheel drive they ask for at least 1,574,900, and a more powerful version with a 2.4-liter engine will cost at least 1,794,900. The start of sales of the updated cars is scheduled for November.
