The Ford Mustang is a Pony Car segment manufactured by Ford Motor Company.
The first version (1964/65 - 1973) was created on the basis of the Ford Falcon family sedan. The first serial Mustang rolled off the assembly line on March 9, 1964 as a 1965 model (among collectors, the unofficial designation “Model 1964 1/2” is used regarding Mustangs until the fall of 1964). On April 17, the car was presented to the public in New York, and on April 19 it was shown on all three American television networks. The promotion of the car was accompanied by an active advertising campaign. It was one of the most successful premieres in automotive history. Over a million Mustangs were sold in the first 18 months.

The first prototype of the car under the Mustang motto (1962) was a two-seater mid-engined roadster in the spirit of European sports cars of those years with an extremely unusual, futuristic design.

However, there was little interest in the concept from the public, and the conceptually similar two-seater (more precisely, imitating two-seater due to the removable plastic fairing above the rear seat) Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster did not become a bestseller; on the other hand, sports versions of the compact Ford Falcon, like the Falcon Sprint, turned out to be very attractive to consumers, combining the capacity of a family sedan with a brighter appearance and slightly improved dynamics.

1964-1973

The first Mustang left the assembly line on the morning of March 9, 1964, and by the end of that year, 263,434 cars had been sold. In mid-1965, a fastback model was introduced, aimed at the rival Plymouth Barracuda and looking more harmonious than the base coupe. The car with a convertible body was also very attractive in appearance.

The stylistic “key” of the successful mid-fifties Continental Mark II luxury coupe was used as the basis for the design, with its characteristic proportions with a long hood and short trunk and plastic body side with a break in the rear wheel arch area. However, in comparison with him, the appearance of the Mustang was less strict and more dynamic.

The design was considered very successful for its time, although unconventional for America - even opinions were expressed that in this respect the Mustang, with its clean lines of a relatively compact body and a moderate amount of chrome in the finish, was closer to European, and not to mass American models of those years with their characteristic excessive size and excessive passion for shiny ornaments.

From a technical point of view, the car was not a revelation.
The base engine was a well-known in the US six-cylinder power unit from the Ford Falcon, bored out to 170 cubic inches (~2.8 liters), it was equipped with a three-speed manual or two- and three-speed CVTs.

The front suspension was generally borrowed from the same Folken, and structurally it was a variant of the usual parallelogram suspension on two wishbones - at the same time, the shock absorber in the block with the spring was removed from the space between the levers and placed above the upper arm. This suspension (called "double-wishbone" in America) was slightly more compact than the conventional parallelogram, in particular, making room for large V8 engines. An anti-roll bar was offered as an option.

The rear suspension was dependent, with longitudinal semi-elliptical springs and a rigid drive axle beam.

The brakes in the base were drum brakes on all wheels, a vacuum booster was offered as an option. The worm gear with circulating balls from Folken completed the picture with a large gear ratio (power steering in those years was a relatively little-demanded option in this class).

As a result, although the handling and driving characteristics of the car were better than those of the base model - the Folken - due to a lower center of gravity and modified chassis settings, but not by much.


Ford Mustang 1965

In 1965, separate adjustable driver and passenger seats, an AM radio, and a floor-mounted shift lever were introduced into the standard Mustang interior. Also available as options were sun visors, a mechanical remote mirror control, a floor console and a bench seat in the front. Also one of the interior options was the "Rally-Pac": a clock and a tachometer mounted on the steering column.

In April 1965, buyers were offered the GT package, which included: tuned suspension, sharper steering, front disc brakes, a dual exhaust system, and special body paint.

A particularly powerful modification from the famous studio of racer Carol Shelby - Shelby GT350 - was produced in a fastback body, equipped with a 289 V8 engine, boosted to 306 hp. and was sold in salons to anyone who wanted it.

In 1966, the base Mustang began to be equipped with a 120-horsepower in-line six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 200 cubic inches (3.2 liters). Three 289 V8 engines were available as options, ranging from 200 to 271 hp. The Shelby GT350 version was now available in four colors, with automatic transmission and a Paxton mechanical supercharger, which made it possible to increase power to 420-430 hp when the engine reached a certain speed. Also in 1966, the Mustang was one of the first to receive a mono car radio with AM/FM bands, and sun visors became standard equipment.

When sales of the Ford Mustang began in Germany, it turned out that the name had already been registered. The German company offered to sell the rights for $10,000. Ford refused and removed the "Mustang" badging, calling it the "T-5" for the German market.

1967-1968

The Ford Mustang GT 390, remembered by many from the feature film Bullitt, was created to equal competition with the Chevrolet Camaro SS 396. The market demanded powerful cars, and Carol Shelby could not help but respond and introduced the Shelby GT500, an even more powerful modification of the Mustang. Under the hood of the novelty was a 7000 cc V8 developing 335 hp. In 1968, the Mustang received a simpler grille and 427 390 hp engines that performed well on the street. In the same year, on April 1, Ford announced its one of the most famous engines - 428 Cobra Jet, with larger valve plates and Ram Air air intake system, which, with a declared power of 550 hp. easily developed all 610s. From the same year, the GT350 and GT500 modifications became known as the Shelby Cobra, and a convertible body became available. At the same time, modest six-cylinder models continued to be produced, offering a bright sporty look and image for a reasonable price.

In 1968, three-point seat belts were introduced for the first time. The "Rally-Pac" package was no longer offered as the new instrument panel already had a tachometer and clock.

1969-1970

By the 1969 model year, the Ford Mustang underwent a re-upgrade, moving further and further away from the original concept: with the same wheelbase, the length of the car increased by 3.8 inches (~ 10 cm), weight - by 140 pounds (~ 70 kg), and in the model line new versions appeared - cheap E, luxurious Grande and sports BOSS and Mach 1. Ford Mustang in 1969 became the first model to use a four-headlight headlight scheme, headlights were placed inside and outside the radiator grille.

The BOSS 302 was built to compete with the Camaro Z/28 in Trans AM. Version with 429 V8 with 375 hp. destined for NASCAR and equipped with Ram Air-induction and special exhaust manifolds. Under the hood of the Mach 1 was the 351st V8, and optionally it was possible to order a self-locking rear axle differential and even the 428 Cobra Jet engine. For the 1970 model year, Ford took a wait-and-see approach and left the Mustang virtually untouched, only changing the front end and making a few other minor updates. This was the last year for the Shelby Cobra modifications, which have remained virtually untouched from last year, unlike the base Mustang.

In addition to the Shelby Cobra, the BOSS 302 and BOSS 429 modifications also disappeared. The Mach 1 modification, equipped with the famous 351st Cleveland V8 engine with 285 hp. and was still available. 1974-1978

This was already the 2nd generation of the legendary muscle car. Ford was revisiting American Pony Car concepts in the face of the gas crisis and changing consumer tastes. But, the car was much closer to the original 1964 concept than later first-generation models.

The car was small by American standards, even smaller than the original 1964 model, and had an in-line four-cylinder engine bored out to 2.3 liters, which developed 86 hp “shameful” for America. The choice of the power unit was determined by considerations of fuel economy. As an option, a 2.8-liter V6 Cologne engine was available and, since 1975, a small, by American standards, V8 of 140 hp at 4.9 liters.

During the first four years of production, about 400,000 cars were sold each year.

1979-1993


Ford Mustang Cobra 1979

In 1979, the Mustang was based on the larger "Fox" platform (it was originally developed for the 1978 Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr). The interior has been restyled to accommodate four more comfortably, despite the narrower rear seat. Body styles included coupe, sedan, hatchback, and convertible, and were categorized by trim level as L, GL, GLX, LX, GT, GT Turbo (1983-84), SVO (1984-86), Cobra (1979-81, 1993). ), and Cobra R (1993).

Catering to the European fashion for small and low-power engines, Ford had to leave the big sport, but in September 1980 everything changed dramatically, even a special SVO department was created (from Special Vehicles Operations - literally, the Department of Special Transport Operations). Their "offspring" - special models of mustangs for participation in the most prestigious and most exciting race - Trans-Am (Trans-Am). The price of a racing car started at $25,000, while a standard car could be purchased for $6,000.

The third generation Mustang combined two different body styles. From 1979 to 1986, the car had a triangular front and four headlights, referred to by enthusiasts as the "4-eye". Then, from 1987 to 1993, the "forms" became more round, in the style of "Aero". In addition, in 1986, Ford introduced a modification of the EFI (electronic fuel injection) engine to the assembly line, instead of a carburetor. There were three units under the hood to choose from: an in-line “four” and V-shaped six and eight-cylinder versions. The four-cylinder modification, by the way, came with a turbocharger, which showed a pretty good result in road tests - acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h in 11.5 seconds, with a power of 88 hp. For comparison, the largest for that period, the 302nd unit, allowed to accelerate to 100 km / h in 8 seconds.

In response to falling sales and rising fuel prices, an all-new Mustang was being developed in the early 1980s. It was to be a front wheel drive small block car based on the Mazda MX-6. But thanks to the objections of caring people, Ford's leadership did not change the traditions of the American muscle car, and the "Japanese Mustang" was not destined to see the "big world". As a result, Ford Motor for the Mustang is doing another facelift, and a creative version on the MX-6 platform was used on the Ford Probe in 1989.

1994-2004


Ford Mustang GT Convertible 1994

In 1994, the Mustang received its first major redesign in its fifteen years. Codenamed "SN-95" comes an updated rear-wheel drive version of "Fox-4". Patrick Schiavone's new styling borrowed some of the features from previous Mustangs. For the first time since 1974, a coupe (fastback) model was not available. New features include an anti-lock brake system and a 230-watt "Mach 460" music amplifier with a standard CD-deck.

The base model had a V6 232 block (3.8 L) with 145 hp (108 kW) in 1994, and since 1995 the same modest six-cylinder, but more productive 150 hp (110 kW) , and kept on the conveyor until 1998. The choice of transmission also did not differ in great scope, as only a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic were offered to choose from. For fans of big engines, there was a long-awaited surprise: on the Mustang GT and Cobra modification, after almost thirty years of use (successful, I believe), Ford replaces the V8 302 block (4.1 l) with a new, smaller, but more efficient V8 281 -m (4.6 L) SOHC. This small-block was originally rated at 215 hp (160 kW), but by 1998 it had already been increased to 225 hp (168 kW), and thanks to the engineers of SVT (a reorganized SVO, now an acronym for Special Vehicles Team), it was possible to “overclock” it to 305 hp (227 kW)!


Ford Mustang SVT Cobra 1999

For 1999, the Mustang received a new design with sharper contours and larger wheel arches, but its basic proportions, interior design, and chassis remained the same as the previous model. The standard 3.8 L V6 was rated at 190 hp (140 kW) and was available until 2004, while the Mustang GT with its 4.6 liter 8-cylinder and 260 hp (190 kW) was the first during this period, gained a steady pace of production. The most powerful of the factory modifications is the Cobra, its engine was rated at 316 hp (235 kW) at 6000 rpm, the gearbox is a five-speed manual Tremec ™ T45, which easily allowed to accelerate in first gear to 72 km / h.

In honor of the 35th anniversary, Ford released the 1999 Jubilee Limited Edition GT, which featured 17-inch alloy wheels, special side skirts, a sporty spoiler, an aggressive air intake, chrome bodywork and a silver leather interior. The car was offered in four colors: silver, black, red and bright white.

At the 2004 North American International Auto Show, Ford unveiled a completely redesigned Mustang, codenamed "S-197", which was based on an all-new D2C platform. Designed under the direction of Hau Thai-Tang Chief Engineer and designer Sid Ramnarace, the fifth-generation Mustang looks like the fastback Mustangs of the late 1960s. Ford's senior vice president of project, J Mays, called the style "retro futurism"

The base model is equipped with a Ford 4.0-liter V6 engine with SOHC gas distribution system, which replaced the 3.8-liter version used since 2004. Ford has announced a new version of the Mustang sports model that should allow it to connect with a "whole new" generation of buyers. By special order of the US Air Force, a special version of the combat show car, codenamed X-1, was prepared, equipped with a 4.6 liter 500 hp (368 kW) engine. Inside there is only one place, located in the center. The instrument panel consists of three LCD displays surrounded by many toggle switches and buttons. The displays show a picture from night vision cameras that are installed on the body. The X-1 does not have a steering wheel in the usual sense; instead, a joystick steering wheel is installed on the central tunnel.

In 2010, the model is going through a small reystalling, the body has become more aerodynamic. The base engine remained unchanged, but for the GT version, the 4.6 liter V8 was revised to produce 319 hp (235 kW) at 6000 rpm of the engine, when the maximum torque of 441 Nm was already achieved at a lighter load of 4255 rpm .

In 2011, the electric power steering is again replaced by a more reliable hydraulic one. The choice is available as a 6-speed manual gearbox MT82, and a 6-speed automatic 6R80. The updated aluminum 227 block (3.7 l) weighs 18 kilograms less than last year. The 24-valve V6 now produces 309 hp (227 kW) at 380 Nm and features a new dual exhaust.

The GT modification is equipped with a 32-valve 302-m block (5.0 l) of 412 hp with net power and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Shelby GT500 has in its arsenal a 5.4 liter engine with 550 hp (410 kW) at 690 Nm of torque.

In 2012, for the modification of the Boss 302, the engine disposed of 450 hp (331 kW) at a torque of 520 Nm.


2013 Ford Mustang GT

In 2013, the Mustang is again ennobled, the design becomes more aggressive from year to year. The most powerful Big Block, with a volume of 5.0 liters / 420 hp, with a torque of 528 Nm, formed the basis of the most productive Mustang - the GT version. The standard engine is a V6 with 300 hp. For the European market, a small four-cylinder 2.3-liter EcoBoost is presented, which, together with two turbines and a direct fuel injection system, has quite “adult” characteristics - 305 hp, 432 Nm of torque, a top speed of 234 km / h and acceleration to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.
