Which tire manufacturer is the best in Russia?

The rating of brands for the production of tires is formed not only thanks to high-tech products, but also the sympathy and reviews of car owners, as well as their position in the sales market, play a significant role.

Manufacturers of tires for cars are the largest research centers that constantly update a high-quality range of products, so it is worth judging which tire company is better only after the driver has familiarized himself with the entire list of brands presented on the market.

1. Excellent perfection –

The concern has occupied one of the leading positions for many years. A distinctive feature of the brand is that the product range is diverse. The most successful sets of the summer season are the Dueler H/P Sport and Turanza T001 tires, and in the winter the Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1 tires stand out.

Bridgestone uses the latest technology to manufacture tires and tests them in the harshest weather conditions to ensure a flawless ride no matter the road conditions.

2. French comfort -

Manufacturer Michelin is the second largest tire concern. The tire manufacturer gained a high profile thanks to a French racing driver who said he uses the brand. After such a statement, car enthusiasts began to buy up the products as if they were fast.

Michelin medium and premium tires are considered one of the most wear-resistant. The summer model Michelin - Primacy 3 has established itself as a high-quality product that behaves flawlessly not only on dry road surfaces, but also after rain, as well as during sharp turns and bends.

3. German mark –

This brand is considered unique because it produces all-season tire sets. Goodyear rubber is durable and has excellent grip on the road.

Russian buyers recommend sets of car tires of this brand for domestic roads. A few years ago, the company released a new brand of tires for the winter season, Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice+. This tire quickly took

4. Premium impeccability -

Continental premium car tires are incredibly popular, and not every motorist can afford to purchase this model. Excellence, impressive traction and grip properties and a decent level of comfort, such a list of advantages will not leave any driver indifferent. Continental Premium Contact 2 and ContiPremium Contact 5 are brands of summer tires that remain popular on the market today. One of the best brands for the winter season is ContiIce Contact HD and WinterContact.

5. Italian perfection - Pirelli

This brand has established itself as a manufacturer of tires for racing tracks and for public road surfaces. The Pirelli tires provide impressive handling and stability at high speeds. But, according to reviews from some customers, this brand is inferior in quality to other manufacturers.

6. Practicality and quality - Sumitomo

A brand with a 125-year history is in no way inferior in quality and wear resistance to other brands of tires.

High controllability and decent grip properties give Sumitomo an equally high score in the sales market.

Dunlop GrandTrek is a winter tire that has proven itself to be a quality set for all-terrain vehicles and crossovers. For the summer season, Dunlop SP Sport Maxx would be a good model.

7. Comfortable driving - Hankook

The automaker from Korea is known to every Russian car enthusiast. The manufacturer of this tire emphasizes not only comfortable driving, but also stability at high vehicle speeds. Hankook tires perform well on dry road surfaces, but on wet sections it is advisable to slow down, especially before turns.

8. The Elder of the World Market - Yokohama

Today, Yokohama produces tires for any type of vehicle. Thanks to the large assortment and high quality of products, the company is very popular in the sales market, which gives a high advantage to the brand, as well as many positive reviews from car enthusiasts.

Today, the global tire market is under the control of a dozen global companies, the names of which are known to any motorist. At the same time, the products of a huge number of brands are on sale, actually belonging to leading manufacturers and acting as their “subsidiaries”. They will be discussed below.

The greatest activity of the largest tire brands in acquiring smaller and more successful manufacturers occurred in the 90s of the 20th century. For the acquired companies, this development of the situation only benefited them. Not only were they able to use financial investments to update production equipment, but they also gained access to advanced research and development conducted by market leaders. At the same time, if necessary, companies at the head office could be assisted by experienced specialists should such a need arise.

It should be noted that in terms of their characteristics, the products of sub-brands have minimal differences from the basic models, but have significantly more affordable prices. Often they are even produced on the same assembly line, and the difference in price becomes the result solely of marketing policy and the need for the buyer to overpay for a well-promoted brand.

Below is a list of the main sub-brands, and for ease of understanding, they are divided by home regions of the parent companies.

European tire brands

Continental

The German concern Continental AG owns a dozen brands that supply the market with a wide range of tires, ranging from motorcycles to special agricultural equipment. Characteristic features of Continental products include predictable driving performance and a high degree of durability. Today, the company has factories in most regions of the world, even in Australia, far from Europe.

Among the subsidiaries producing tires for vehicles:

  • Barum (Czech Republic). The company's plant is located in the city of Zlin and has belonged to the concern since 1995. The Barum company itself has existed since 1924.
  • Matador (Slovakia). A Slovak brand that has existed since 1905. The rights to it belong to Continental for a little over 10 years (since 2007).
  • Gislaved (Sweden). A very old Swedish company, existing since 1883. It has been owned by the German concern since 1992.
  • Uniroyal (United States). One of the first “subsidiaries” of the company, which appeared back in 1979. The company dates back to 1892 and is located in Texas.

It is curious that in fact Uniroyal's ownership is assigned to Michelin, but in the European market it is Continental that acts as the copyright holder. This is due to the fact that the acquisition of the European division of the American company took place back in 1979, and the main brand was acquired by the French concern only in 1990.

Michelin

Initially, Michelin was engaged in the production of bicycle tires, and today it has not only one and a half dozen factories around the world, but also its own research and laboratory facilities. At the same time, the company's engineering staff carries out advanced developments in the field of tires, both in the interests of Michelin itself and its brands.

  • BF Goodrich (United States). The company traces its history back to 1870. Its office is located in Ohio, and Michelin acquired it in 1988.
  • Kleber (France). This asset has belonged to the concern since 1988. The company itself has been represented on the tire market since 1945.
  • Tigar (Serbia). The company's plant is located in the Serbian town of Pirot. It was acquired by Michelin in 2007.
  • Kormoran - Poland

In addition, the French concern has several more subsidiaries: Pneu Laurent, Wolber, Tyremaster. These manufacturers are practically not represented on the Russian tire market, so it makes no sense to dwell on them.

Pirelli

The history of Pirelli began in the 19th century with the production of bicycle tires. Until today, it has significantly expanded its capabilities, having 13 factories in various regions of the world. Almost all of them produce Pirelli tires, but there are two additional sub-brands within the manufacturer’s structure.

  • Formula (Italy). A young budget brand that appeared on the market only in 2012, and was originally created by Pirelli at its own expense for the Eastern European market.
  • Ceat (India). This brand is focused primarily on sales in Turkey and India.

Nokian

The concern was founded only in 1988, which makes it one of the youngest on the market. However, the company has already managed to earn credibility and popularity. The company got its name from the Finnish town of the same name.

A significant part of Nokian products is initially intended for the Russian market. Its sub-brand is:

  • Nordman. A budget brand under which outdated Nokian tire models are often produced, which at one time enjoyed success in the market.

Japanese tire brands

Bridgestone

  • Dunlop (UK). Having a history of more than a century, the brand belongs to two giants of the tire market, Bridgestone and Goodyear. The company was purchased by Japanese tire manufacturers in 1985, and 14 years later it sold part of its rights to the Americans from Goodyear.
  • Firestone (United States). American company, existing since 1900, and acquired in 1988.

Toyo

The Toyo company appeared in the first half of the 40s of the XX century as a result of the merger of two companies engaged in the manufacture of various rubber products. Today, the Toyo brand is recognizable throughout the world, and its tires are sold in hundreds of countries around the world, representing all continents without exception. Today the manufacturer has two additional sub-brands.

Yokohama

The famous Japanese manufacturer appeared in 1930 as one of the divisions of a company producing cables together with representatives of BF Goodrich. The manufacturer's head office is located in the Japanese capital of Tokyo.

Tire brands from the USA

Goodyear

Today, Goodyear tire brand products are widely distributed throughout the world. Tires with the appropriate inscription are installed not only on motorcycles and automobiles, but also on airplanes. They are characterized by high mechanical strength and operational reliability. This is fully typical for tires of several sub-brands owned by the company. In terms of the ratio between cost and quality characteristics, they are one of the best on the market.

  • Dunlop (UK). The company owns a share of the British company, having acquired it in 1999 from the Japanese Bridgestone, which previously fully owned the manufacturer.
  • Sava (Slovenia). The company was founded in the town of Kranj back in 1931. Goodyear has owned it since the end of the 20th century (1998).
  • Fulda (Germany). The company was founded at the very beginning of the 20th century, becoming the company's first European asset. The purchase was made in 1969.

Today, not only the products of the parent company, but also all the “subsidiaries” of the American concern, without exception, enjoy fame and a positive reputation in the market.

Cooper

This American manufacturer produces a wide range of tire sizes to equip passenger cars and trucks. The distinctive features of Cooper products are high reliability, decent performance and affordability for the consumer.

  • Mickey Thompson (United States). The company bears the name of the famous racer who became its creator in 1963, and since 2003 it has been the property of Cooper.

The sub-brand's products are not inferior in their parameters to tires sold under the name of the parent company, but at the same time they have even more favorable prices for tires of any size.

Tires from South Korea

Hankook

The South Korean manufacturer produces tires in a wide range of sizes and a large number of modifications, providing the opportunity to choose the appropriate model for any situation. The concern has several subsidiaries, due to which the range of tires owned by Hankook becomes even more impressive and diverse.

Kumho

The rapid development of the Korean brand is associated with a period of cooperation with the American Uniroyal. Having received modern technologies in the 60s of the 20th century, the company managed to bring the quality of its own tires to a different level, gaining serious competitive advantages over other regional tire suppliers.

Currently, Kumho is already positioned as one of the world leaders in the tire industry. It owns the Marshal brand, which is less popular, but in terms of product quality is practically no different from South Korean tires.

Today, the Marshal is presented primarily in European countries, and offers a combination of durability and road safety in a variety of driving modes.

Chinese tires

Triangle

The company has existed since 1976, actively using acquired Goodyear technologies and using similar production equipment. At the same time, close cooperation has been established between the companies, and some of the Goodyear tires intended for sale on the European market are produced at Triangle enterprises.

Goodride

Today it is one of the largest tire companies in the Celestial Empire, providing a significant part of the total volume of automobile tires produced in the country. The brand belongs to Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Corporation.

Linglong

The company has existed since 1975 and is privately owned. Today, the tire manufacturer acts as one of the leading enterprises in the industry. Linglong products produce tires aimed at equipping various types of transport (passenger cars, commercial vehicles, trucks).

Sunny

A relatively young manufacturer, which appeared in 1988, and has state affiliation. The company is distinguished by large production volumes and specializes mainly in the budget segment of the market.

Firenza

The owner of the brand is Sumo. She is also the owner of the tire company SumoTire. The brand has existed since 2007 and is rated as one of the most potentially attractive manufacturers. The Firenza focuses on combining high technology and affordability.

Russian tires

Kama

The company's production facilities are located in Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan. The Nizhnekamskshina plant has existed since 1973, and occupies a leading position in the country in terms of production volumes of automobile tires.

Viatti

Another brand owned by the Nizhnekamskshina company, located in the Republic of Tatarstan.

Cordiat

The owner of this brand is the company SIBUR - Russian Tires. The date of creation of the company is considered to be 2002. Today SIBUR additionally owns the Tyrex brand. At the same time, the Russian company has been a member of an alliance with the tire manufacturer Matador (Slovakia), owned by Continental, for the last eight years (since 2011).

Amtel

Relatively small domestic manufacturer. The company was founded with Indian capital back in 1987, but began producing tires only in 1999. Today the company is forming an international alliance with the Vredestein company (Netherlands).

Tire brands from the CIS

Belshina

Located in the Belarusian city of Bobruisk, the plant has been successfully operating since 1963, and is one of the largest tire manufacturers in the entire post-Soviet space. The company produces tires not only for passenger cars, but also for trucks, selling them in various regions of the world. For example, Caterpillar mining dump trucks are equipped from the factory with tires from the Belarusian manufacturer.

Rosava

The largest tire manufacturer in Ukraine. The company has existed since 1998 and is located on the territory of Bila Tserkva. The company offers products for various purposes, including for special equipment. Tires are sold not only in Ukraine, but also in other countries.

Tire production in other countries

It is necessary to understand that in the conditions of modern globalization of the economy, the region of origin of the brand and the location of production sites (factories) may not coincide. At the same time, situations are common when one plant simultaneously produces several models of tires belonging to different brands.

Who owns the tire factories?

While the organization of production can still be sorted out, the intricacies of company ownership are much more complex. Mutual acquisition of shares is a common practice. For example, Bridgestone is the owner of an 18.9% stake in the European manufacturer Nokian Tires, and the purchase was made by the European division of the Japanese manufacturer. The transaction amount was $78.3 million (in 2003 prices).

At the same time, Bridgestone said that Nokian would remain an independent company, and the new owners would not interfere with the company's work. In turn, just two years later the production of Nokian truck tires was transferred to the Bridgestone plant located in Spain.

Subsequently, all securities were transferred to Bridgestone Corporation.

What is the best truck tire brand on the market? To find out, the American trade magazine Modern Tire Dealer decided to get first-hand information - by surveying 7,000 independent tire dealers. Everyone was given a choice of 37 brands and asked: “How would you rate these brands for product quality?” The best rating is 5, the worst is 1. There were 37 brands of truck tires to choose from, from the most famous, such as Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin, to practically unknown ones - Freestar, Taurus, Warrior, etc.

The best, according to knowledgeable experts, was the French brand Michelin, which received a rating of 4.6 based on the results of the survey. Michelin managed to outperform its closest competitor, Bridgestone, by 0.2 points, followed by Goodyear (3.9) and Yokohama (3.8), located as close as possible to each other.

Fifth place was shared by three tire brands: Toyo, BFGoodrich and Firestone (3.7), and Continental was eighth on the list with a score of 3.6, ahead of Dunlop (3.3). The brands Sumitomo, Hankook and General round out the top ten with a rating of 3.2.

According to MTD, product quality was the most important factor for dealers, but they were also asked to rank other parameters in order of importance using the same scale from 1 to 5:

As you might expect, 89% of respondents said product quality is “very, if not extremely important.” Quality was named “extremely important” by 57.7%, “very important” by 31.2%, and simply “important” by 11.3%.

The next most important factor was identified as product profitability, with 93% of dealers saying it was “very, if not extremely important” and another 5.7% saying it was “important”. Assortment size was the third most important attribute that dealers value when working with suppliers, with approximately 83% saying it was “very if not extremely important.” The survey results also showed that warranty and correction policies remain a “very, if not extremely important” issue for 72% of tire dealers. 64% of respondents also spoke about the degree of retreadability of tires.

Everything is clear with the best brands; now we need to talk about what ratings the other brands received. Firstly, it should be noted that the Kelly brands (this brand is owned by Goodyear) and Kumho were just a little short of making it into the top ten, as they both received a score of 3.1. The latest brands to score a 3 or higher were Dayton (owned by Bridgestone) and Ohtsu/Falken (both owned by Falken Tire Corp.). All of these brands scored exactly 3 (Falken plans to drop the Ohtsu brand, which it acquired rights to in this year).

Let's move down the list, where brands from China reign supreme. Double Coin gets 2.8, and Hercules and Roadmaster get 2.6 (Roadmaster is a brand of truck tires from Cooper, which moved its truck tire production to China several years ago). Dealers gave Dynatrac and Power King a 2.5 rating, while Aeolus, Akuret and Sailun were one-tenth behind them (Akuret is a product of Del-Nat Tire Corp.; Aeolus was previously owned by the now-defunct GPX International Tire Corp., and now has exclusive rights to the brand in the USA belong to Alliance Tire USA).

The list goes on, and brands from Europe are starting to appear here - Mitas, produced in the Czech Republic, gets 2.2; Chinese Wanli the same; CEAT from India – 2.1; Gladiator, produced in China, is also 2.1, as are two other Chinese brands: Long March and Westlake. At the very bottom of the table were three brands from China, and two from Europe - the Chinese Geostar and Freestar, together with the European Taurus, scored 2 points, while Warrior (China) and Barum (Europe) received only 1.9 points.

Brand recognition

Survey respondents ranked “brand awareness among end consumers” as the seventh most important issue, with approximately 45% of those surveyed saying it was “very, if not extremely, important.” But are there brands that even the dealers themselves are not familiar with? Of the entire list, Mitas was the most unknown - 70% of respondents said that they had never heard of such a brand. In second place in terms of obscurity was Warrior, about which 69% of respondents knew nothing. Next come Akuret and CEAT (62%), Freestar and Geostar (61%), followed by GT Radial and Taurus (58%), and ninth is the Aeolus brand (56%).

Recoverability level

Retreadability remains an important factor, and for good reason - despite the decline in 2008-2009, tire retreading is still a large and profitable business. According to MTD, about 13 million truck tires were retreaded in the United States in 2009, a market worth $1.64 billion.

Dealers were asked the following question: “Which brand of tires are retreaded most often?”, after which the brands were again given ratings from 1 to 5.

According to the survey results, the most frequently retreaded truck tires in America were Michelin and Bridgestone - both brands scored the same number of points (4.4). Michelin offers tire retreading services through Michelin Retread Technologies Inc., and Bridgestone has a subsidiary called Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions.

Goodyear is in third place with a score of 4.0, followed by Yokohama (3.8). A score of 3.7 went to three brands at once - Firestone, Continental and Toyo (last year the American branch of Continental - Continental

Tire the Americas LLC - introduced a new product in this segment called ContiTread, which is produced by the North American subsidiary of Marangoni under a franchise agreement).

BFGoodrich tires were in eighth place, receiving 3.6, and the top ten “most retreadable” tires were Dunlop, General and Sumitomo with one rating of 3.3 for all.

MTD respondents were also not shy about naming the worst in this category. The least frequently retreaded tires are Taurus (1.7), Barum, Warrior and CEAT are doing a little better (1.8), and five brands received a rating of 1.9: Westlake, Freestar, Wanli, Long March and Ling Long.

What do fleet operators want?

Lastly, MTD also asked dealers what their customers want from tire brands, and the answers they received were illuminating. Respondents were asked, “What factors matter most to truck fleet operators?” A score of 5 means the highest value, 1 means the least.

The most significant factor predictably turned out to be price - this parameter received 4.3 points, and was considered “very, if not extremely important” by 86% of respondents. Approximately the same number of respondents said that the factor of product availability is extremely important, followed by the resource of the original tread and frame; these aspects were given the highest rating for importance by 82% and 66% of dealers, respectively.

List of the best tire manufacturers in the world

Michelin - French comfort

The French company, which has been on the market for more than 100 years, is well known to Russian car owners as one of the leading tire manufacturers. Today it is represented in more than 170 countries on the planet, and part of the production capacity is located on the territory of our country. A separate area is the development of automobile tires intended for trucks and agricultural vehicles.

Throughout its history, this automotive tire manufacturer has invested heavily in innovative developments. They were the first to produce air-inflated tires here. Silicone additives made it possible to extend the service life and achieve fuel savings. For special-purpose equipment, ramps were developed in which polymer knitting needles were installed instead of air - this eliminated the possibility of puncture and downtime. EverGrip technology, actively implemented by the company in recent years, leads to the preservation of the technological qualities of the wheel, as a result of which it does not lose them for several years.

One of the goals of the well-known tire manufacturer, which made it to the top 10, is to make its means of production safer and less energy-consuming. For example, wind and solar energy are used. Recycled tires are accepted for further processing. A new generation of rubber is being developed, which should have the following advantages:

  • reduce the harm caused by production and operation to the environment;
  • significantly reduce vehicle fuel consumption;
  • The production of tires that would be suitable for hybrid and electric cars is being established.

When choosing car tires in terms of safety criteria and service life, Michelin can be one of the optimal solutions. The products of this brand are highly valued by motorists who use its products for driving in regions with harsh climates. Engineers pay special attention to speed characteristics and savings on fuel consumption. Increasingly used are "smart" cleats, which change the pressure produced by the cleat depending on temperature and weather conditions. When it warms up, studs create less noise and do not destroy the road surface as much, but traction and controllability improve.

Continental - impeccable performance for the premium class
