The FAW Besturn X80 crossover entered the Russian market last year, although the car itself was shown in Russia back in 2014 at the Moscow International Motor Show. The FAW Besturn X80 crossover was created on the first generation Mazda6 platform (Mazda GG platform) - a relative of the Ford Mondeo, Volvo S60 and Jaguar X-Type. The display also shows a picture from the rear view camera with dynamic (!) markings. Almost European interior with modern build quality. We got the basic equipment of the FAW Besturn X80 for the test - it is equipped with air conditioning, not climate control and lacks a pair of keys on the steering wheel. But it is ready to boast of the electric drive of all windows and mirrors with the folding function, heated seats, a sunroof, a USB port and an AUX input. In higher trim levels, cruise control, an electric driver's seat and even little things appear.

How does the FAW Besturn X80 ride?

On the move, the FAW Besturn X80 is good - a torque of 184 newtons per meter is already achieved at four thousand revolutions per minute. Acceleration is quite linear - the more you press the accelerator pedal, the faster. The engine brings no surprises: Mazda's developments are more than a dozen years old, and there is nothing to improve here. Although, the Chinese distinguished themselves in another way, adapting the engine to our 92 gasoline. According to FAW specialists, the crossover is equipped with a Mazda engine. The gearbox with sport mode and manual shifting does not like the first ranges and tends to climb higher. Before taking the X80 for a test drive, I spoke with the owners, including those who bought the crossover from the AvtoLegion company. They say that after the initial break-in, the “automatic” changes its character and starts switching faster than an example. One of the men who owned a European car with a “robot” repeated the subjective opinion several times: for him there is no difference between the boxes. Although, there is: the classic fluid mechanics of the FAW does not twitch in traffic jams, but it serves hundreds of thousands of kilometers without problems. And we recall that it was developed and released by the Japanese from Aisin, who have been producing transmissions for more than 70 years. The distance from the back of the driver's seat to the seat of the sofa is as much as 38 centimeters, so you can even cross your legs in the back. The brakes are exemplary - I wouldn’t be surprised if they were either adjusted on the racetracks, or bought as a whole and only mounted on regular places. At the same time, the process of stopping is predictable and pleasant both on asphalt, and on slush, and on mixed. In this regard, they can compete with the settings of the French and Italians, who got their hands on mountain serpentines. The crossover suspension is traditional: MacPherson strut in front, multi-link in the back. Such a scheme is optimal not only for financial reasons, but also for the construction of all-wheel drive. In fact, the appearance of the Chinese FAW Besturn X80 crossover is not as far from reality as the intricate figures and lines on the canvases of abstract artists. However, in order to understand what kind of car is in front of us, we will have to abstract from its origin.

Leaving the entrance of my house in Moscow, I found in front of him six crossovers of well-known Japanese, South Korean and European companies parked in a row. I left the test FAW Besturn X80 behind the house, in the yard, but it happened by accident, there was simply no free parking space on the “first line”. Its design does not cause rejection at all, and the X-shaped intersection of the upper and lower chrome trim of the side windows, which passes into the contour of the tailgate, seems to me just a unique element. From it, the FAW crossover can be recognized unmistakably.

On a proven chassis

This "node" migrated from the first generation car (produced since 2013) to an updated version, sales of which in China began in 2016, but in our country only now, at the end of 2018. No matter how unique the design move, it did not provide a breakthrough in the Russian market for the car. The emblem of FAW, historically - the first Chinese automobile plant, which began its activities with the production of licensed Soviet trucks in the 50s of the last century - has not yet become familiar on our roads. Attempts to start selling passenger models in our country - V2 and V5 small cars, as well as the Besturn B50 mid-size sedan, created on the basis of the first generation Mazda6 - essentially failed. It seems that the Besturn X80 crossover has the right to count on a different fate, because it represents the most popular car subclass in our country today. And it is quite consistent with its "niche". It is enough to abstract from its emblem, and ...

…and what do we get? Quite a nice-looking body, vaguely reminiscent of Infiniti, Lexus, Mazda, and, in fact, “all shepherd dogs at once”. The “Mazdovskaya” platform, though not the newest, but exactly the one that provided the Japanese “six” with the current success, it all started with it. Of course, if you look at the Chinese car with prejudice, you can note some uneven gaps between the panels (the contours of the rear doors and tailgate). But it doesn't seem critical to me.

Graceful headlights. LED daytime running lights and auto light. LEDs in taillights. Silver roof rails. Wide plastic molding on the bottom of the body and passenger doors. 17-inch alloy wheels with front and rear disc brakes visible through the spokes. On the front and rear bumpers, silver "off-road" linings are visible. What's not to like here? Only an emblem?

Let's look inside - and immediately stop looking at the vertically mounted 8-inch display on the dashboard. Previously, it did not exist, the multimedia system was integrated into the panel and, frankly, did not look particularly attractive. Now it's a different matter. Bright colors that do not fade in daylight. Touch control. Intuitive logic... but not all functions. The smartphone was not immediately connected, and the lack of instructions in the test car also affected. But in the future, the connection of the two devices was steadily maintained.

However, the FAW Besturn X80 multimedia system does not indulge in an abundance of functions. Don't be fooled by the number of icons on the screen. Two of them are “idle”: one does not work at all, the other seems to be some kind of national Chinese application that is not supported by our smartphones. There is no navigation. The picture from the rear view camera is average, but with dynamic guides. I specially filmed her in the dark - it seems to me that she deserves a "four". Parktronic - only at the back, but the front one would not hurt here, because the hood is long. Front overhang too.

Yes, and one more thing: the system is not Russified. In the "set" only Chinese and English. But the on-board computer “speaks” (or rather, “writes”) in Russian, almost one hundred percent correctly. Some of our words even barely fit into the screen on the tidy, for example - "stop the reminder." There are many different "reminders" here, in particular, the system recognizes the driver's fatigue, offers to take a break, highlights a cup of coffee (or Chinese tea?). You can follow her advice or remove the warning from the screen.

With a "torn" rhythm of movement along the highway, with sharp decelerations, overtaking and accelerations up to 150 km / h, fuel consumption increases to 8.2 - 8.6 liters per 100 km. In the city, in a traffic-free mode, it slightly exceeded 9 liters. The volume of the gas tank is average: 64 liters. The gasoline used is 92nd.

Behind the wheel, you can get a good job, although steering wheel adjustment for reach would not hurt here (only steering wheel height adjustment is offered). The buttons on the steering wheel fit comfortably under your fingers. By the way, the set of buttons is very rich - there are four groups of them. And although the INFO button, which opens travel information, is for some reason assigned to the block of smartphone control buttons, nevertheless, it is not difficult to figure out how to control the BC. Again, take this into account, in the absence of a factory manual.

The 4.6-meter body offers a roomy interior. The width of which in front is 143 cm, in the back - 134 cm, is not enough, but this is the distance between the sidewalls of the body protruding into the interior. If you measure the distance between the rear passenger doors, more centimeters will come out, but they will not be entirely honest, since the rear passengers will not “get it”. Their hips and shoulders will not rest against the doors, but against the sidewalls of the body.

The space when landing "behind me" is 33 cm, a very good indicator! But the rear passengers do not have a 12-volt outlet or a USB connector, and they are not directed by the air ducts of the heating and ventilation system. It's not very modern, even for the "Chinese".

Parts of the back of the rear sofa can be easily folded, significantly increasing the luggage compartment, which is not too large in nominal value (398 l). A full-size spare in its bowels is a plus, but a very frail plastic raised floor panel is definitely a minus. I wanted to transport something heavy on this car for economic purposes, but, frankly, I was afraid for the integrity of this part.

Let's continue to abstract from the Chinese emblem on the go. How does the "heavenly" crossover ride, is it worthy of comparison with classmates from Europe, Japan, Korea?

Yes and no. From the very beginning of the movement begins to strain the noise in the cabin. And not only aggregate or aerodynamic. Here and there "wake up" crickets and knocks. It's a shame for, in general, a high-quality assembled interior. I found one loosely fitted part almost immediately: it was a small plastic corner near the driver's left leg. But it was not in the corner, even being practically not fixed, he did not knock.

Maybe the hood was to blame? Opening and slamming it, I felt that it decently backlash. I tightened the rubber stops - the play disappeared, but the knock in the cabin remained. It looks like it came from somewhere behind. I even looked under the body - no, everything was in order there. Found the "culprit" by accident - it turned out to be a plastic lining in the upper part of the tailgate from the inside. Conventionally, behind it was an additional, upper brake signal.

An unpretentious owner may not even pay attention to these sounds. More meticulous - will disassemble the interior and glue the trim panels from the inside with noise and vibration isolation sheets. It will cost little, but I'm sure it will bring tangible benefits.

Under the hood of the FAW Besturn X80, there can only be an uncontested two-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 142 hp. With. Quite a modern unit, judging by its environmental standard (Euro 5). But there are two transmission options. For the “junior” configuration, Basic, a “mechanics” of six steps is offered, for the “senior”, Luxury, either the same “mechanics” or a six-speed automatic.

We tested the "automatic" version. And they made sure that she was tearing from the spot - God forbid. As they would say today - "fire". Alas, only in the subjunctive mood. In fact, the fervor of the crossover subsides very quickly, moreover, having reached the level of 2500-2800 rpm, the tachometer needle seems to rest against an invisible wall. It rests so firmly that, if you press the gas pedal, nothing will happen. The engine speed seems to freeze, the car refuses to accelerate.

Fortunately, the crossover automatic has additional modes of operation, and in the sports (S) you can overcome the “wall”, forcing the tachometer needle to jump to 3000 rpm and above - and then things will go. Acceleration will become much more confident.

The technical characteristic confirms: this motor has a high-speed character. The maximum torque (184 Nm) is at 4000 rpm, the maximum power is at 6500 rpm. But nothing is said about the "wall", as well as about its "overcoming". In practice, overclocking is best done this way. At 100-110 km / h and 2000 rpm, we switch the box to S mode, and the speed will increase by about 500 “units”. The mark "3000" is not reached? So there will be no spurt. Persistently, stubbornly we increase the speed to 2500-2700, we again use the S mode, we jump the bar at 3000 rpm - and here it is, acceleration has begun! For some reason, the manufacturer does not give the acceleration time from standstill to 100 km / h. I think it is about 12 s.

Paradoxically, the measurement shows that acceleration from 80 to 120 km / h when using modes D and S occurs in approximately the same 11-12 s. The sport mode does not give a clear win. What about manual gear selection? The fourth stage provides the same acceleration (in time) as the automatic modes. But in the third stage, things turned out better. The tachometer needle confidently crept up and entered the red zone at the same moment when the speedometer needle showed 120 km / h. In this situation, the box automatically switched to a step up, but I managed to fix the result of acceleration visually: 9 seconds.

It was noticed that when using the manual gear selection mode, the “failed” speed zone was overcome faster than in automatic modes. Use fourth or fifth gear, even in the city, and you will be happy.

In general, the machine selects the steps smoothly, almost imperceptibly. I liked it, and not only me. People who approached me in the parking lots were pleasantly surprised that the FAW had a machine gun. They also paid attention to the central display of the multimedia system. Asked about other nuances of the car. First of all, of course, about reliability, durability. Alas, during our tests, we do not conduct resource tests. Ask questions about the device, design, behavior of certain units and systems - we will be happy to answer. But we don't know how long it will last.

The difference between the average and "cruise" speed

What else pleases the new FAW Besturn X80? Among other things - a cruise control system. There is nothing complicated in using it, the buttons are placed on the steering wheel. I'm trying to set the value "120 km / h" on the motorway - but it doesn't work! Why? Yes, because the “cruise” is too precise here, when you press the SET button, it selects values ​​\u200b\u200bwith tenths. For example, "117.4", "118.5", "119.8" ... Try to hit exactly "120" here. Especially since the tenths change if you disable and re-enable the "cruise". So the system really measures the speed, and does not offer some deeply fixed values ​​\u200b\u200bin its memory.

Fuel consumption was very good. In D mode, I set the "cruise" to 110 km / h and measure the car's appetite for ten kilometers (almost a flat highway, without noticeable ups and downs). The result is 7.2 liters per hundred. BUT: the on-board computer shows an average speed of only 102 km / h. What to believe - "cruise" or BC? Something is clearly not working correctly. Logically, during the operation of the "cruise" engine speed and fuel consumption can change, but the speed should remain constant. And here…

I try the same test in S mode. Consumption increases slightly, to 7.6 liters per hundred. And more clearly: on the rise, the engine speed increases from 2800 to 4000, another 0.2 liters is added to the accumulated 7.6 - it is quite logical. Then the road flattens out, and on a ten-kilometer segment we get an average result of 7.6 liters. BUT: the average speed is again different, only 106 km / h.

Inaccurate Chinese instruments? In fairness, it must be said that such discrepancies also occur with other manufacturers, in particular, Japanese ones. Only the American Chevrolet Traverse and the South Korean Hyundai H-1 turned out to be standards in this regard. How many kilometers per hour were recorded when the "cruise" was turned on, so many were "brought" and their BC.

Sometimes the green ECO indicator on the instrument panel lights up. I'm trying to determine the algorithm for its appearance - what mode of movement does the car consider environmentally friendly? So, you should keep the speed below 2500 and instantaneous consumption within 11 liters per hundred. The on-board computer shows everything as clearly as possible.

At high speeds, the overall noise of the units actively penetrates the FAW cabin. By 120 km / h with the front passenger you are already talking in raised tones. Can music drown out noise? Yes, it's even worth it. Because the potential of the audio system is revealed at about half the volume. The band of reproducible frequencies becomes wider. Although the music is non-name, no eminent brand is written on the speakers.

The directional stability of the Chinese crossover is relatively high, but at high speeds (150 km / h) it decreases. In addition, the car is sensitive to crosswind gusts. The steering wheel is not very light, but not very accurate either. The Besturn X80 cannot be called a standard of handling, but it is also a “failure”, in this regard, the average model will suit most drivers.

Suspension? On “little things” it is perceived as tough, but on significant irregularities, it seems to be “softened”. On the primer with large "waves" you can safely bring down, without buildup and gear crushing, but on the "washboard" left by the caterpillar tractor, the movement will be harsh. In addition, the salon will sound with all its "fibers".

The ground clearance of the Besturn X80 is claimed at 190mm, but our measurements showed that there are lower points. So, under the lower mountings of the rear shock absorbers (they are located below the rear suspension arms) are only 16.5 cm, under the bend of the exhaust pipe 18 cm, under the plastic shields in front of the front wheels are also 18 cm. But the protection of the engine compartment (metal) is 25 cm from the ground see okay. The measurements were carried out on a flat asphalt site and on an unloaded vehicle.

Deep off-road on the FAW Besturn X80 is not worth climbing. It has only a front-wheel drive, and the characteristics of the motor are not conducive to “crawling”. Dosing thrust at the very bottom of the rev range is not easy, a little overdone - and the crossover will try to “shoot” (and therefore dig in).
