What does a mustang look like? Mustang Shelby GT500: the most powerful road-going Ford. The list of basic equipment includes

The sixth generation of the legendary American muscle car Ford Mustang in fastback coupe and convertible bodies made its world debut in January 2014 at an international show in Detroit, but its preview took place on December 5, 2013 (simultaneously in six cities around the world - in Dearborn, Los Angeles, Barcelona, New York, Sydney and Shanghai).

Compared to previous models, the car has changed dramatically - it has received beautiful styling, modern technical components, new engines and previously unavailable equipment.

In mid-January 2017, the “American” underwent a planned update, one of the main innovations of which was the appearance of a 10-speed automatic transmission instead of a 6-speed transmission. However, Ford didn’t stop there and thoroughly shook up the entire car: they “refreshed” its appearance, corrected the interior, added new options, modernized the engines and removed the 3.7-liter naturally aspirated engine from the lineup.

Externally, the sixth generation Mustang is beautiful and quite modern, but a piece of primitiveness still lingers in it. The streamlined and wide body of the muscle car with a long hood, low roofline and short tail extension is topped with “evil” front and stylish rear lighting, which together creates a powerful and insanely brutal image. The picture is completed by huge “rollers” of wheels measuring from 18 to 20 inches.

The “sixth” Ford Mustang is available in two body versions – a fastback coupe and a convertible with a multi-layer fabric top. The “closed” two-door is 4784 mm long, 1381 mm high (the convertible is 13 mm taller) and 1916 mm wide, and the “open” car is 13 mm taller. A muscle car has a 2,720 mm distance between the axles, regardless of the solution.

The interior of the Mustang looks organic and stylish, and as befits a “thoroughbred” sports car, it resembles an airplane cockpit. The characteristic symmetrical front panel in the central part houses an 8-inch “TV” of the multimedia system, a “trapezoid” of the multimedia installation and a quartet of toggle switches that control the driving settings. Behind the weighty multifunctional “donut” with a three-spoke design are the “cylinders” of the speedometer and tachometer with a color display of the on-board computer in the middle (a “drawn” instrument cluster with a 12-inch screen and a bunch of settings is available as an option). Mostly high-quality materials are used in the decoration, but there are also plastics with hard textures.

For front passengers, the sixth generation Ford Mustang has anatomical seats with a grippy profile, electric adjustments and ventilation, but in powerful versions they give way to Recaro buckets. In both coupes and convertibles, the rear seats are better suited to children or compact passengers due to limited legroom and headroom.

The luggage compartment volume of the Mustang in the coupe body is 408 liters; in the convertible, this figure is reduced to 332 liters due to the folding awning mechanism.

The soft roof of the “open” version is semi-automatic, and its transformation in motion is impossible.

Specifications. For the 6th generation Ford Mustang, the European specification has two standard petrol modifications, each of which has a 6-speed manual or an optional 10-speed automatic:

  • The base version of the muscle car is equipped with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four with turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing, which produces 317 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 432 Nm of torque at 3000 rpm. With such a “heart,” the car accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 250 km/h, and its “fuel gluttony” does not exceed 8-10 liters in mixed driving conditions for every “hundred.”

  • Engine compartment of the “top” version GT filled with a 5.0-liter eight-cylinder V-engine with combined gasoline injection, generating 421 “horses” at 6500 rpm and 530 Nm of torque. As a result, the Mustang conquers the starting jerk to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, and the “maximum” capabilities are fixed at 250 km/h. In the combined cycle, the car's fuel consumption varies from 12 to 13.6 liters per 100 km.

Before the update (carried out in January 2017), another unit was also offered in the USA - a 3.7-liter V-shaped “six” with a distributed fuel supply, producing 305 “mares” at 6500 rpm and 366 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm minute.

The “sixth” Ford Mustang is built on a new “trolley”, similar in architecture to the front-wheel drive CD4 platform, which “flaunts” a fully independent suspension - MacPherson struts with a double hinge system at the front and an advanced “multi-link” on the subframe at the rear. For an additional fee, the two-door is equipped with adaptive MagneRide shock absorbers filled with magnetorheological fluid (which, before the update, were the privilege of exclusively “hot” modifications of the GT350/GT350R).
The American muscle car is equipped with rack and pinion steering with electric power steering, which has three operating modes – Normal, Sport and Comfort. All wheels accommodate powerful ventilated discs of the braking system (the size of the front mechanisms, depending on the version, varies from 320 to 380 mm) with ABS, EBD and other modern “assistants”. By default, all versions of the Mustang are equipped with a limited-slip rear differential.

In addition to the basic versions, there are also more “charged” options in the Ford Mustang palette, and one of them is Shelby GT350. Along with an even more aggressive appearance and some modifications in the interior, this car has a lightweight body, reinforced suspension with adaptive shock absorbers and an effective brake system with Brembo calipers. But the main thing about it is the 5.2-liter V8 Voodoo engine, which produces 533 “stallions” at 7500 rpm and 582 Nm at 4750 rpm.

An even more interesting version - Shelby GT350R. It has the same power unit as the car without the letter “R”, but at the same time its body is even lighter, the wheel rims are made of carbon fiber, and the functionality includes some “racing” equipment.

Well, the most “extreme” performance of the sixth generation Mustang is GT King Cobra. Externally, such a muscle car is not very different from its usual “brother”, and the main emphasis in it is on improving the technical part.

It is driven by a 5.0-liter V8 with a supercharger, the performance of which exceeds 600 horsepower. In fact, “King Cobra” is a complete package of modifications to the engine and other components and assemblies.

Options and prices. In the USA, sales of the restyled Ford Mustang will start in the fall of 2017, and it will reach the countries of the Old World in early 2018 (it is possible that its sales will begin in Russia).
On the European market, in particular in Germany, the “sixth” Ford Mustang in the pre-reform solution is sold at a price of 38,000 euros (~2.42 million rubles at the current exchange rate) for a fastback coupe, and a convertible will cost 4,000 euros more. The muscle car should reach Russia, but exactly when this will happen is still unknown.
In the “base” the car is equipped with seven airbags (the convertible has five), ABS, a multimedia system with a color screen, dual-zone climate control, a rear view camera, power accessories, cruise and many other modern features.

MANAGER'S TRIUMPH

The presentation of the first production Ford Mustang in 1964 is considered one of the most successful in the history of the automotive industry, and the legend owes its appearance to the resounding failure of the previous model, the Edsel. Ford urgently needed to save the situation, and general manager of the concern Lee Iacocca, the future author of the best-selling book “Manager's Career,” together with a team of designers, economists and marketers, created the first Mustang concept in March 1964. The car, which became the progenitor of the Pony Car class, easily recognizes the features of Ford's luxury cars Continental Mark II 1957 and Thunderbird 1954, as well as design elements of Maserati, Lincoln and Chevrolet.

It’s interesting that the iconic car got its name and the figurine of a running wild horse on the radiator grill at the last moment: they planned to call it Cougar (“Panther”), but Iacocca’s marketers decided that the cat family represented by Jaguar was enough for the market. There is another version of the origin of the name - in honor of the single-seat fighter of the Second World War North American P-51 Mustang, but in both cases the car reflected the spirit of rebellion and was a real “American dream” on wheels.

Success for Ford was not only desirable, but necessary: the car, which collectors call the 64-1/2 Mustang, was produced as a 1965 model, focusing on market research. In the event of a repeated failure, as with Edsel, the concern could have gone bankrupt, but Mustang did not disappoint: after a high-profile March presentation on television, 22 thousand copies were sold on the first day, and by the end of the year - over a quarter of a million!

The Ford Falcon Sprint became the aggregate donor for the bestseller - the model received, in particular, the engine and front suspension from it. The engineers made the rear wheel dependent, the brakes were drum brakes on all wheels, and a vacuum booster and power steering were offered as options. The basic set included a 2.8-liter engine producing 102 hp. s., which could accelerate cars to 150 km/h, fastback and coupe bodies. Later, a convertible body was added to the list of options, and the list of options included an automatic transmission and V8 engines with power up to 380 hp. With.

IN THE CHASE OF SUCCESS

The Mustang was a "poor man's sports car": comfortable and beautiful, although not luxury, and it sold quite successfully. But the competitors were not asleep: the very next year, Iacocca’s team had to update the appearance of the Mustang in order to beat the Plymouth Barracuda on the market. In the same year, new interior options were introduced: sun visors, a clock and tachometer, and electric side mirrors. The suspension and front disc brakes have also been improved.

The blue and white modification of the Mustang Shelby GT-350 with a V8 engine producing 306 hp was considered especially chic. With. Its authorship belongs to car designer and Formula 1 racer Carroll Shelby, who two years later created the GT 500 with a seven-liter V8 engine producing 335 hp. s., for the sake of installation of which the engine compartment had to be specially extended. In the spring of 1968, both Shelby cars, the GT-350 and GT-500, were renamed the Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra, which received another body variation - a convertible.

In 1969, the Mustang underwent a global modernization. The length increased by 10 cm, the weight increased by more than 50 kg, and the line was divided into three versions: the economical E, the expensive Grande and Mach 1 with a 335 hp engine. With. The production of the racing series began: the first Mustang Boss 302 was created as a competitor to the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 for Trans Am oval tracks, and the Boss 429, of which only 1,358 copies were produced, was equipped with a giant seven-liter engine that produced 375 hp. With. and worked together with a manual four-speed transmission, spoilers and an oil cooler - already for the NASCAR series.

In 1971-1973, the heavier Mustangs could not find a niche. Some wanted to see them as simplified aggressive dragsters, while others wanted them to be nice family cars, but in fact they were neither one nor the other. The gasoline crisis also contributed, which ultimately led to an upgrade - again under the leadership of Iacocca, who became president of Ford Motor.

REBIRTH OF A LEGEND

The era of the Mustang II was 1974–1978, which was marked by a return to classic dimensions and the installation of an economical four-cylinder Kent engine with a power of only 86 hp. With. as standard.

Buyers liked the changes - almost 400 thousand Mustang II cars were purchased, and in 1979 the third generation appeared on a unified Fox Platform with European engines in the basic configuration and large V8s in the top-end configuration. At that time, due to the energy crisis, the cars were equipped with the weakest engines in Mustang history - the Ford Windsor 255 V8 with only 120 hp. With.

In 1987, the car was marked by a new stage of restyling, and in 1994, by a major reworking of the SN-95 chassis, which became a marker for the fourth generation of the Ford Mustang.

In 1998, customers were offered the Sport trim for the first and last time, with black vinyl hood and triple split taillights. By 1999, when the Mustang celebrated its 35th anniversary, the New Edge design concept robbed the model of the smoothness characteristic of the brand's classic cars.

By the beginning of the fifth generation, the Mach 1 was returned to the Mustang line, and all Cobra models were equipped with 4.6-liter engines with an Eaton mechanical supercharger. In 2004, the Ford Mustang acquired a new S-197 platform and began to look like its 60s self.

New and vintage Mustangs remain a dream for many car enthusiasts: in this sense, nothing has changed since Lee Iacocca's team put up a presentation "Mustang Paddocks" on the football field of the University of Chicago in 1964. By the sixth generation, the popularity of the Mustang had not fallen: in 2015, the concern introduced models with three different EcoBoost engines and an expanded list of options, and in 2018 it again modernized the model range and announced the development of the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet, which can accelerate to a maximum speed of 240 km/h in 8 seconds.

CAR RUN ACROSS THE SCREEN

It would be difficult to find a car that would leave a more noticeable mark on culture. No car has appeared in films as often as the Mustang, which has appeared in half a million films. The classic 1965 car is driven by Paul Sheldon, the protagonist of the film “Misery” based on King’s novel, the light-colored Mustang convertible was filmed in the film about agent 007 “Goldfinger”, Will Smith drives a Shelby GT500 in the desolate New York in “I Am Legend”, and the 1971 Ford Mustang, nicknamed Eleanor, is even listed in the credits of the original seventies film "Gone in 60 Seconds" - and this is only a microscopic part of the films featuring the legendary muscle cars. That is why even those who have absolutely no knowledge of cars know what this sports car looks like.

“Mustangs” inspire not only film directors, but also organizers of various “remakes” on TV shows. One of them is professional racer Brad Deberti, the hero of the Discovery Channel project “Turboduet”.

To install 18-inch-wide Mickey Thompson racing wheels with custom Forgiato wheels on the rear axle, the rear suspension had to be replaced with an independent Watson Racing one - with different arms, shocks and springs from H&R Performance.

Together with his father Doug, a famous tuning master who has been remaking cars for more than a quarter of a century, Brad makes unique cars, but not only for his own pleasure. The younger Deberti lives for racing, with victories in many championships behind him, and ahead of him is the dream of driving in the NASCAR racing series.

Wheel arch extensions complemented the TS Designs body kit with an Air Design wing, and a new hood was also made. In addition, the car received color-changing Bullseye Retro LED headlights and a Kicker audio system, which required the removal of the rear seats and spare tire.

Father and son work together in the workshop, remaking and selling tuned cars to make this wish come true, and the next project of the Turbo Duet was the Ford Mustang, which the Debertis prepared for SEMA - the largest tuning show in the world. The team got a great chance to make a name for itself in the world of tuning and get new clients.

The engine was boosted to 750 hp. With. due to the installation of Roush Supercharger and a new Borla exhaust system, and the factory brakes were replaced with more efficient Ford Performance ones.

The brand new five-liter Ford Mustang GT 2018 model year was provided to them free of charge by the manufacturer itself, but all tuning costs fell on the team. The Debertis immediately scanned the car and created a 3D model, making it easier for themselves to create the body kit: Doug and Brad decided to combine classic muscle car design and the latest Ford developments in the project.

A racing roll cage and a new radiator grille were welded for the car, carbon elements and racing bucket seats were installed in the interior. There was also some repainting: the team worked under a tight deadline, but attention was paid to every detail.

The car turned out to be impressive, but you will find out whether Brad and Doug managed to surprise their colleagues at the tuning show in the “Turbo Duet” program, which starts on May 21 and will air on Mondays at 23:00 on the Discovery Channel.

About the car

The Ford Mustang is a Pony Car segment vehicle produced by Ford Motor Company.
The first version (1964/65 - 1973) was created on the basis of the Ford Falcon family sedan. The first production Mustang rolled off the assembly line on March 9, 1964 as a 1965 model (among collectors, the unofficial designation “1964 1/2 model” is used for Mustangs produced before the fall of 1964). On April 17, the car was presented to the public in New York, and on April 19, it was shown on all three American television networks. The promotion of the car was accompanied by an active advertising campaign. It was one of the most successful premieres in the history of the automotive industry. More than a million Mustangs were sold in the first 18 months.

The first prototype of the car under the motto Mustang (1962) was a two-seat mid-engine roadster in the spirit of European sports cars of those years with an extremely unusual, futuristic design.

However, there was little interest in the concept from the public, and the conceptually similar two-seater (more precisely, simulating two-seater due to the removable plastic fairing over the rear seat) Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster did not become a bestseller; But the sporty versions of the compact Ford Falcon, like the Falcon Sprint, turned out to be very attractive to consumers, combining the capacity of a family sedan with a brighter appearance and slightly improved dynamics.

1964-1973

Ford Mustang Convertible 1964

The first Mustang left the assembly line on the morning of March 9, 1964, and by the end of that year, 263,434 cars had been sold. In mid-1965, a fastback model was introduced, aimed at the rival Plymouth Barracuda and looking more harmonious than the base coupe. The car with a convertible body was also very attractive in appearance.

The stylistic “key” of the successful luxury coupe Continental Mark II of the mid-fifties was used as the basis for the design, with its characteristic proportions with a long hood and short trunk and plastic sidewalls with a break in the rear wheel arch area. However, in comparison with it, the appearance of the Mustang was less strict and more dynamic.

The design was considered very successful for its time, although unconventional for America - there were even opinions that in this regard, the Mustang, with its clean lines of a relatively compact body and a moderate amount of chrome in the trim, was closer to European, and not to mass American models of those years with their characteristic excessive size and excessive enthusiasm for shiny ornaments.

From a technical point of view, the car was not a revelation.
The base engine was a well-known six-cylinder power unit from the Ford Falcon in the USA, bored to 170 cubic inches (~2.8 liters), it was equipped with a three-stage manual or two- and three-stage CVTs.

The front suspension was generally borrowed from the same Falken, and was structurally a variant of the usual parallelogram suspension on two wishbones - in this case, the shock absorber in a block with a spring was moved out of the space between the arms and placed above the upper arm. This suspension (in America it is called “double-wishbone”) was slightly more compact than a conventional parallelogram, in particular, freeing up space for large V8 engines. An anti-roll bar was offered as an option.

The rear suspension was dependent, with longitudinal semi-elliptic springs and a rigid drive axle beam.

The base brakes were drum brakes on all wheels; a vacuum booster was offered as an option. The picture was completed by a worm steering mechanism with circulating balls from Falken with a large gear ratio (power steering in those years was a relatively unpopular option in this class).

As a result, although the car’s handling and driving performance were better than those of the base model, the Falken, due to a lower center of gravity and modified chassis settings, but not by much.

Ford Mustang 1965

In 1965, the standard Mustang interior added separate power-adjustable driver and passenger seats, an AM radio, and a floor-mounted shift lever. Also available as options were sun visors, a manual remote mirror control, a floor console and a front bench seat. Also one of the interior options was the “Rally-Pac”: a clock and tachometer mounted on the steering column.

In April 1965, buyers were offered the GT package, which included a tuned suspension, sharper steering, front disc brakes, dual exhaust system and special body paint.

Ford Shelby GT350 1966

A particularly powerful modification from the famous studio of racer Carol Shelby - the Shelby GT350 - was produced in a fastback body, equipped with a 289 V8 engine, boosted to 306 hp. and was sold in salons to anyone who wanted it.

Ford Mustang 1966

In 1966, the base Mustang began to be equipped with a 120-horsepower inline-six engine with a displacement of 200 cubic inches (3.2 liters). Three 289 V8 engines were available as options, with power ranging from 200 to 271 hp. The Shelby GT350 version was now available in four colors, with an automatic transmission and a Paxton mechanical supercharger, which allowed the engine to increase power to 420-430 hp when the engine reached a certain speed. Also in 1966, the Mustang was one of the first to receive a mono AM/FM car radio, and sun visors became standard equipment.

When sales of the Ford Mustang began in Germany, it was discovered that this name had already been registered. A German company offered to sell the rights for $10,000. Ford refused and removed the "Mustang" badge, calling it the "T-5" for the German market.

1967-1968

Ford Mustang 1967

By the 1967 model year, the Mustang gained length and height, and most body panels underwent a transformation accordingly. The front end began to look more “aggressive”, the fastback was changed, in which the rear window and trunk lid were now located on the same line.

Ford Mustang 427 Drag 1967

The Ford Mustang GT 390, remembered by many from the feature film Bullitt, was created to compete equally with the Chevrolet Camaro SS 396. The market demanded powerful cars, and Carol Shelby could not help but respond and introduced the Shelby GT500 - an even more powerful modification of the Mustang. Under the hood of the new product was a 7000 cc V8 developing 335 hp. In 1968, the Mustang received a simpler grille and 427 engines producing 390 hp, which performed well on the street. In the same year, on April 1, Ford announced its one of the most famous engines - the 428 Cobra Jet, with larger valve plates and a Ram Air air intake system, which, with a stated power of 550 hp. easily developed all 610. From the same year, modifications of the GT350 and GT500 began to be called Shelby Cobra, and a convertible body became available. At the same time, modest six-cylinder models continued to be produced, offering a striking sporty appearance and image for reasonable money.

Three-point seat belts were introduced for the first time in 1968. The "Rally-Pac" package was no longer offered as the new instrument panel already had a tachometer and clock.

1969-1970

Ford Mustang Boss 429 1969

By the 1969 model year, the Ford Mustang underwent repeated modernization, increasingly moving away from the original concept: with the same wheelbase, the length of the car increased by 3.8 inches (~10 cm), weight - by 140 pounds (~70 kg), and in the model line new versions appeared - the cheap E, the luxurious Grande and the sports BOSS and Mach 1. The Ford Mustang in 1969 became the first model to use a four-headlight headlight design; the headlights were placed inside and outside the radiator grille.

The BOSS 302 was built to compete with the Camaro Z/28 in Trans AM racing. Version with 429 V8 with 375 hp. intended for NASCAR and equipped with Ram Air-induction and special exhaust manifolds. Under the hood of the Mach 1 there was a 351 V8, and as an option it was possible to order a limited-slip rear axle differential and even a 428 Cobra Jet engine. Versions of the Shelby Cobra were available in fastback and convertible body styles and became increasingly luxurious, equipped with a 428 Cobra Jet V8 engine producing 335 hp.

Ford Mustang Boss 302 1970

For the 1970 model year, Ford took a wait-and-see approach and left the Mustang virtually untouched, changing only the front end and making a few other minor updates. This was the last year for the Shelby Cobra modifications, which remained virtually untouched from last year, unlike the base Mustang.

1971-1973

In addition to the Shelby Cobra, the BOSS 302 and BOSS 429 modifications also disappeared. The Mach 1 modification, equipped with the famous 351 Cleveland V8 engine with 285 hp. and was still available. The new BOSS 351 was introduced and was faster in the 1/4 mile than the 429 Super Cobra Jet Ram Air.

Ford Mustang Convertible 1973

Following the powerful versions, the decline of the Mustang itself came in 1973 - engine power ratings were again lowered, and it turned out that the base engine produced 95 hp, and the most powerful 351 cc V8 produced only 156 hp.

1974-1978

Ford Mustang 1974

This was already the 2nd generation of the legendary muscle car. Ford was revising the concept of the American Pony Car in the face of the gasoline crisis and changing consumer tastes. But, the car was much closer to the original 1964 concept than later first-generation models.

The car was small by American standards, even smaller than the original 1964 model, and had in its basic configuration an in-line four-cylinder engine bored out to 2.3 liters, developing a “shameful” for America 86 hp. The choice of power unit was determined by considerations of fuel economy. A 2.8-liter V6 Cologne engine and, since 1975, a small, by American standards, V8 with 140 l/s at 4.9 liters were available as options.

During the first four years of production, about 400,000 cars were sold each year.

1979-1993

Ford Mustang Cobra 1979

In 1979, the Mustang was based on the larger "Fox" platform (it was originally developed for the 1978 Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr). The interior has been restyled to accommodate four people more comfortably, despite the narrowed rear seat. Body styles included coupe, sedan, hatchback and convertible, and were classified by trim level into L, GL, GLX, LX, GT, GT Turbo (1983-84), SVO (1984-86), Cobra (1979-81, 1993 ), and Cobra R (1993).

Catering to the European fashion for small and low-power engines, Ford had to leave the big sport, but in September 1980 everything changed dramatically, even creating a special department SVO (from Special Vehicles Operations - literally, the Department of Special Transport Operations). Their “brainchildren” are special models of Mustangs for participation in the most prestigious and most exciting race - Trans-Am. The price of a racing car started at $25,000, while a standard car could be purchased for $6,000.

The third generation of the Mustang combined two different body styles. From 1979 to 1986, the car had a triangular front end and four headlights, referred to by enthusiasts as the "4-Eyes". Then, from 1987 to 1993, the “shapes” became more round, in the “Aero” style. In addition, in 1986, Ford introduced an EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) engine modification instead of a carburetor. There were three units under the hood to choose from: an in-line “four” and V-shaped six and eight cylinder versions. The four-cylinder modification, by the way, came with a turbocharger, which showed a pretty good result in road tests - acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 11.5 seconds, with a power of 88 hp. For comparison, the largest unit at that time, the 302nd block, allowed it to accelerate to 100 km/h in 8 seconds.

In response to falling sales and rising fuel prices, an all-new Mustang was developed in the early 1980s. It was to be a front wheel drive small block car based on the Mazda MX-6. But thanks to the objections of concerned people, Ford management did not change the traditions of the American muscle car, and the “Japanese Mustang” was not destined to see the “big world”. As a result, Ford Motor is making another facelift for the Mustang, and a creative version on the MX-6 platform was used in 1989 on the Ford Probe.

1994-2004

Ford Mustang GT Convertible 1994

In 1994, the Mustang underwent its first major redesign in its fifteen years. Codenamed SN-95, an updated rear-wheel drive version of the Fox-4 is being released. Patrick Schiavone's new styling borrows some of the styling cues from previous Mustangs. For the first time since 1974, a coupe (fastback) model was not available. Innovations include an anti-lock brake system and a 230-watt “Mach 460” music amplifier with a standard CD deck.

The base model had a V6 232 block (3.8 l) with a capacity of 145 hp (108 kW) in 1994, and starting in 1995 the same modest six-cylinder, but more productive 150 hp (110 kW) , and remained on the assembly line until 1998. The choice of gearbox was also not very wide, with only a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic available. There was a long-awaited surprise for lovers of big engines: on the Mustang GT and Cobra modifications, after almost thirty years of use (successful, I think), Ford is replacing the V8 302 block (4.1 l) with a new, smaller, but more productive V8 281 -m (4.6 L) SOHC. This small-block was originally rated at 215 hp (160 kW), but by 1998 it had been increased to 225 hp (168 kW), and thanks to the engineers of SVT (a reorganized SVO, now an acronym for Special Vehicles Team), they managed to “overclock” it to 305 hp (227 kW)!

Ford Mustang SVT Cobra 1999

For 1999, the Mustang received a new design with sharper contours and larger wheel arches, but its basic proportions, interior design, and chassis remained the same as the previous model. The standard 3.8 L V6 was rated at 190 hp (140 kW) and was available until 2004, while the Mustang GT with its 4.6 liter 8-cyl and 260 hp (190 kW) debuted During this period, it gained a steady pace of production. The most powerful of the factory modifications is the Cobra, its engine was rated at 316 hp (235 kW) at 6000 rpm, the transmission was a five-speed manual Tremec™ T45, which easily allowed it to accelerate in first gear to 72 km/h.

In honor of the 35th anniversary, Ford released the anniversary Limited Edition GT 1999, which was decorated with 17-inch alloy wheels, special side skirts, a sports spoiler, an aggressive air intake, chrome body parts and a silver leather interior. The car was offered in four colors: silver, black, red and bright white.

Original road test of the 4.6L Mustang SVT Cobra:
Drag racing 1/4 mile in 13.8 sec at 164 km/h;
Acceleration 0-100 km/h = 5.6 s;
Maximum speed = 240 km/h;

Original road test of the 4.6L Mustang GT:
Drag racing 1/4 mile in 14 seconds at 160 km/h;

There are also three alternative modifications offered in this generation: in 2001 Bullitt (modification included a black "running horse" emblem on the hood, fog lights, lowered suspension and no rear wing), in 2003 and 2004 Mach 1 (modification included unique alloy wheels , body applications, flat spoiler, open grille and functional hood scoop), power up to 390 hp (290 kW) and the legendary Cobra (the most powerful “civilian” modification).

2005-2013

Ford Mustang S-197 2005

At the 2004 North American International Auto Show, Ford unveiled a completely redesigned Mustang, codenamed "S-197", which was based on an all-new D2C platform. Developed under the direction of Chief Engineer Hau Thai-Tang and designer Sid Ramnarace, the fifth-generation Mustang's appearance is reminiscent of the fastback Mustangs of the late 1960s. Ford's senior vice president of the project, J Mays, called this style "retro futurism"

The base model is equipped with a Ford 4.0-liter V6 engine with SOHC gas distribution system, which replaced the 3.8-liter version used since 2004. The new engine produces 210 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 325 Newton-meters of torque at 3,500 rpm. This engine comes mated to a standard Tremec T-5 five-speed manual transmission. An automatic five-speed gearbox “5R55S” is optionally installed. The GT version of the Mustang features a 4.6 L SOHC Modular 3-valve V8 with variable injection controlled by VCT and produces 300 hp (224 kW). The 2005 version has an approximate weight-to-power ratio of 11.5 pounds per horsepower. Although the Mustang GT comes with the same automatic transmission as the V6 model, the optional Tremec 3650 5-speed manual transmission allows you to make better use of the GT's extra power.

Ford Shelby GT 500 2007

In 2006, the updated Shelby GT500 was released, available in convertible and coupe body styles. The Shelby GT500 differs from ordinary Mustangs in its specific appearance and color, as well as the presence of a number of elements of a sporty ambiance, while remaining a comfortable and well-equipped car with sports seats made of genuine leather.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500KR

And in the same year, 2006, the world premiere! Ford and Shelby are building a powerful sports car, the Ford Shelby GT500KR, with a 5.4-liter, 540-horsepower engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. There is an air intake on the hood for additional cooling. There is also a lower spoiler at the front with an air intake to cool the brake system. One thing is upsetting: the Ford Shelby GT500KR was released in a small batch, only 1000 cars. This is the embodiment of American ideas about what a muscle car should be in a modern guise.
In addition to standard modifications, Ford could not bypass the tradition of special, limited editions, which include:

DUB Edition

Ford has announced a new version of the Mustang sports model that should allow it to connect with an "entirely new" generation of buyers. This car was prepared with the direct participation of the Roush tuning studio and the editors of DUB magazine. The Dub edition model is equipped with a 3.7-liter V6 unit producing 305 horsepower (224 kW) and is available in both coupe and convertible body styles. The kit includes 20-inch TIS alloy wheels, Pirelli sports tires and a body kit from Roush.

Parnelli Jones Limited Edition

In 2007, the Parnelli Jones Limited Edition was first shown at the New York Auto Show. The color scheme is faithful to the golden era of Trans-Am racing. Engine power from official sources is 370 l/s (272 kW).

X-1 Edition

By special order of the US Air Force, a special version of the combat show car was prepared, codenamed X-1, equipped with a 4.6 liter 500 horsepower (368 kW) engine. There is only one place inside, located in the center. The instrument panel consists of three LCD displays surrounded by a variety of toggle switches and buttons. The displays broadcast images from night vision cameras installed on the body. The X-1 does not have a steering wheel in the usual sense; instead, a joystick steering wheel is installed on the central tunnel.

In 2010, the model is undergoing a slight restalling; the body has become more aerodynamic. The base engine remained unchanged, but for the GT version the 4.6 liter V8 was revised, and began to produce 319 hp (235 kW) at 6000 rpm of the engine, when the maximum torque of 441 Nm was achieved at a lower load - 4255 rpm .

In 2011, the electric power steering is again replaced by a more reliable hydraulic one. There is a choice of either a 6-speed manual transmission MT82 or a 6-speed automatic 6R80. The updated aluminum 227 block (3.7 liters) weighs 18 kilograms less than last year. The 24-valve V6 now has a performance of 309 hp (227 kW) with a torque of 380 Nm and is equipped with a new dual exhaust.

The GT modification is equipped with a 32-valve 302 block (5.0 l) 412 hp net power and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The Shelby GT500 has a 5.4 liter engine with a power of 550 hp (410 kW) and 690 Nm of torque.

In 2012, for the Boss 302 modification, the engine produced 450 hp (331 kW) with a torque of 520 Nm.

2013 Ford Mustang GT

In 2013, the Mustang is being refined again, the design becoming more aggressive from year to year. The most powerful Shelby GT500 package is complemented by a new 5.8 liter V8 unit with a supercharger, producing 671 hp. (494kW). Both Shelby and Boss are available exclusively with manual transmission. 20-inch aluminum wheels and LED lights are now standard, rather than an option as before.

2014 - our time

The sixth generation of the pony car was introduced by Ford on December 5, 2013, and mass production began at the Ford Flat Rock Assembly plant on July 14, 2014. What distinguishes the updated Mustang from previous models is primarily a fully independent rear suspension for all modifications, as well as an additional four-cylinder 2.3-liter engine.

The most powerful Big Block, with a volume of 5.0 liters / 420 hp, a torque of 528 Nm, formed the basis for the most productive Mustang - the GT version. The standard engine is a V6 with 300 hp. A small four-cylinder 2.3 liter EcoBoost is presented for the European market, which, together with two turbines and a direct fuel injection system, has quite “adult” characteristics - 305 hp, torque 432 Nm, top speed 234 km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

Already installed in the basic configuration is the BLIS® traffic control system, which scans other road users and other obstacles at 360 degrees, a contactless ignition system with touch sensors on the doors, SYNC® - a media center with a touch screen that supports voice control, as well as an electronic system ETCS traction control.

The current Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, which hit the market at the end of 2012, has a long and interesting history behind it.

Initially a purely American car, created on the basis of the Ford Falcon. He was named after the mascot of Southern Methodist University (Dallas, USA), the wild, unbridled stallion that appears on the logo of the SMU Mustangs football team, and replaced the little pony “Peruna”, whose nine generations brought them good luck in games for seventy years.

The Ford Mustang was shown at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964, and this date is considered to be its birthday. It caused a real stir among dealers on all continents. Already in March 1964, the first Ford Mustang rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, Michigan - a snow-white convertible with a red interior.

The combination of sporty design, low price and excellent dynamic performance led to more than a million units being sold in 18 months. And why should it be surprising that a whole class of cars (Pony car) was named after the Ford Mustang, and during the Second World War a long-range fighter was named after it: the North American P-51 Mustang.

When the Ford Mustang went on sale, there was nothing like it on the market - the Chevrolet Corvair Monza and the Pontiac Firebird, which appeared a little later, could not even come close to its performance. And I could only compete with him in terms of characteristics.

The high-tech version of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, modified by Carroll Shelby, was one of the most popular cars at the time from 1967 to 1970. Its engine produces 355 hp. at 5,400 rpm, with a maximum torque of 580 Nm at 3,200 rpm, it could accelerate the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds.

In 2006, after a long break, as a result of the joint efforts of Carroll Shelby and the Ford SVT (Special Vehicle Team) division, which develops “charged” modifications of production cars, the most powerful Ford Mustang of that time was presented at the Detroit Auto Show.

Both the coupe and convertible were equipped with a 5.4 liter V8 engine producing 475 hp and became true masters of the road. His modification of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Red Stripe with a 500 hp power unit. then valued at $41,675.

The 40th anniversary of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was celebrated with the release of the Shelby Cobra GT500KR, demonstrated at the 2007 New York Auto Show. “King of the Road” (transcript KR) was equipped with a new V8 engine, also 5.4 liters, but with a power of 540 hp.

In 2006, the GT500KR went under the hammer for $600,000. All proceeds from the sale went to the Carroll Shelby Children's Fund. Only 1,000 Shelby Cobra GT500KR units were produced.

In 2008, a special version of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR KITT was created especially for the series “Knight Rider”. Thus, the Ford Mustang re-appeared in the role of the actor. Previously, it was used in the remake of the film “Gone in 60 Seconds”.

In 2011, the engine power of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was increased by another 10 hp, and it amounted to 550 hp. At the same time, the power unit has become lighter and more economical - fuel consumption has been reduced to 10.2 l/100 km on the highway, and 15.7 l/100 km in the city.

But this was not enough for the producers. The 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, presented to the public at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, was equipped with a 5.8-liter turbocharged engine producing 662 hp. The supercar's maximum speed increased to 325 km/h, but consumption in the city remained 15.7 l/100 km, on the highway - 9.8 l/100 km.

The coupe receives additional improvements in the form of LED taillights, an aluminum hood and a uniform welded steel body. It does not have a radiator grille, since the power unit requires intensive cooling. The aggressive front bumper and 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar tires give the supercar an aggressive look.

Overall dimensions of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, mm: length - 4,780, width - 1,877, height - 1,391 (coupe), 1,399 (convertible), wheelbase - 2,720. Ground clearance (ground clearance) is 118 mm. The coupe weighs 3,852 kg.

Improvements to the latest generation GT500 include the Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission. All the improvements have led to the fact that acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes the Mustang Shelby GT 500 only 3.5 seconds. That's faster than the Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

Advanced AdvanceTrac stability control and traction control help achieve better handling on any road surface, while upgraded Brembo brakes guarantee short stopping distances. The Torsen differential provides good traction even in difficult driving conditions, and the adjustable Bilstein shock absorbers provide a comfortable ride. The power of the Shelby GT500 engines is constantly and steadily increasing.

Again at the Barrett-Jackson auction, but in 2012, a release with an 862 hp engine was announced. And at the 2012 New York Auto Show it was presented with a 1100 hp engine. To withstand such power, its chassis was further strengthened.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 supercar went on sale in America at the end of 2012. Its base price is $54,200. Optionally, the Shelby GT500 can be had with the SVT Performance package, which costs $3,495 more and the glass roof adds $1,995.

The GT500 is assembled in Flat Rock, Michigan. Unfortunately, the GT500 is not sold in Russia, but with the advent of the new generation model, official deliveries may begin. True, the cost of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 for Russian motorists will be much higher than what is being asked for in the States.

In 2017, as part of the auto motor show held in Detroit, a presentation of the updated Ford Mustang 2018-2019 model took place. For the most part, this is not a new model, but a restyling of the 6th generation, shown in 2014.

The car has two body types: a two-door coupe - fastback and convertible. The car has a wide range of buyers, both in the USA and in Russia, because in addition to its legendary status, it is attractive in price and reliability of the average car. It is actively purchased by men aged 30-40 who want to stand out in the crowd and have a fun weekend.

Design changes

Design changes are present both in the front of the car and in the rear. Not to say that they have become drastic compared to the previous presentation of the car, but the fact that the car has received a new look is hard to argue with. The changes affected the grille, LED optics, the hood, which became 10 mm lower, which gave the Mustang additional streamlining, the spoiler and exhaust pipes also changed.

In general, the car received a modern and aggressive appearance with bright body elements, but even in 2018-2019, the designers managed to preserve that same iconic appearance of primitiveness.

  • Crimson;
  • Blue;
  • Orange.

In addition to these designs, the car also has 9 colors. There are also 11 wheel styles to choose from, each with unique design styles. We must admit that the buyer needs to choose the configuration of his model - this is not easy.

According to the classics, the front of the car is a huge 6-angled false radiator grille with coarse mesh filling and a massive logo in the very center. A small air duct is barely noticeable under it, which with a large “protrusion” of the lower lip of the bumpers gives the car an aggressive look. What attracts most attention is the front optics, with LED filling in the form of curved vertical stripes. A massive hood with numerous stampings hangs over the Ford Mustang's optics. Immediately below the front optics are LED fog lights with horizontal orientation, which are only available as an option.

From the side, the car looks very impressive: a long hood with a “hump”, “falling” A-pillars and a domed roof that goes into a short rear part. The image will be complemented by a high window sill line, rough edges and wide wheel arches, which contain 20-inch wheels on low-profile tires.

At the rear, the car received stacked LED lights with vertical orientation, which are similar to the lights of the first Mustang, but have the stylization of today. Above them rises a spoiler, which is not available for all modifications, and the lower part is decorated with single or dual exhaust pipes (depending on the modification).

Dimensions:

  • Length is 4784 mm;
  • Width depends on body type - 1916 mm;
  • Height – 1394 mm for the convertible and 1381 mm for the coupe version;
  • The distance between the axles is 2720 mm.

Salon

The designers decided not to change the interior much. However, the model has a new feature in the form of a 12-inch color instrument panel display, which is located behind the standard 3-spoke steering wheel. In the basic version, the sports car is equipped with standard analog instruments with two wells and an on-board computer display.

The central dashboard in the center is decorated with three round air ducts, under which there is a small 8-inch display of the Ford Mustang 2018-2019 multimedia system. Under it there is a large scattering of buttons, “knobs” and toggle switches, which are responsible for the audio system, climate system, heated and ventilated seats and much more.

The seats received good lateral support and an anatomical profile. The “charged” modifications feature Recaro buckets. The cabin has a 4-seater layout, but perhaps only children can fit in the back, since there is practically no free space above the head and for the legs.

In general, the car has very high quality finishing materials and a good level of assembly. For European competitors this salon is still very far away, but for American manufacturers this is a high level.

The manufacturer did not deprive the owners of the luggage compartment, the volume of which in the coupe version is 408 liters. The convertible boasts 332 liters thanks to a semi-automatic roof folding system. By the way, to fold the roof, the car must come to a complete stop.

Mustang 2018-2019 Specifications

Type Volume Power Torque Overclocking Maximum speed Number of cylinders
Petrol 2.3 l 317 hp 432 H*m 5.8 sec 250 km/h 4
Petrol 5.0 l 421 hp 530 H*m 4.8 sec 250 km/h V8
Petrol 5.2 l 526 hp 583 H*m 3.9 sec 289 km/h V8

There are two standard modifications and several charged ones, which differ in different parameters.

  1. The simplest modification in its engine compartment has a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. Direct injection and high turbine pressure from the engine made it possible to “remove” 317 hp. and 432 Nm of thrust.
  2. The standard GT version is equipped with a classic American V8 with a displacement of 5.0 liters. This atmospheric power plant produces up to 421 hp. and 530 Nm of torque.

Both of these engines are paired with both a 6-speed manual transmission and a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The manufacturer also provides “charged” modifications of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT350R. The letter “R” in the name denotes a lightweight body, carbon fiber wheels and “track” suspension settings. Otherwise, they have the same power filling, represented by a 5.2-liter V-shaped eight, which develops 533 horsepower and 582 Nm of torque. The engine works exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The muscle car's suspension is completely independent. At the front it is represented by a double ball joint with anti-roll bar, and at the rear there are independent coil springs with anti-roll bar. The car is also equipped with a MagneRide damping system. “Charged” versions of the 2018-2019 Ford Mustang are distinguished by aluminum steering knuckles.

The car has a powerful braking system with ventilated brake discs measuring from 320 to 380 mm. According to the classics, they are equipped with electronic assistants and ABS, EBD systems. Shelby modifications received 15 and 15.5-inch wheels from Brembo with 6-piston calipers at the front and 4-piston calipers at the rear.

Dynamics and consumption

The standard modification accelerates to 250 km/h, spending only 5.8 seconds on the first hundred kilometers. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle does not exceed 9 liters.

The GT version can please you with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, and the top speed is limited to the same mark of 250 km/h. Mixed fuel consumption – 12.5 liters.

In the Shelby version, Ford is able to overcome the first hundred in 3.1 seconds, and the top speed will be 285 km/h. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle here can be limited to 15 liters per 100 km during quiet driving.
