Kia Optima competitors. Camry or Optima - which is better? Engine and transmission

In 2018, 33,700 units were purchased in Russia. new Toyota Camry and 20,833 pcs. - Kia Optima. In 2017, the results were as follows: 28,199 units. - demand for Japanese sedan, 12,822 units. - in Korean. That is, compared to the year before last, interest in models increased by 20% and 62%, respectively. Kia is increasingly expanding its presence in the market of new passenger vehicles in Russia. But will Optima be able to further reduce the gap from its competitor at the end of the current year? Let's try to answer this question by comparing these two popular cars.

Prices and options

The 2019 model year Toyota Camry is offered to customers in seven versions: “Standard”, “Standard Plus”, “Classic”, “Elegance Safety”, “Prestige Safety”, “Luxury Safety” and “Executive Safety”, and the Kia Optima 2019 - in eight: “Classic”, “Comfort”, “Luxe”, “Prestige”, “Europa League”, “Premium”, “GT Line” and “GT”. The most affordable Camry “Standard” with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine (150 hp) and a 6-speed automatic transmission costs 1,573,000 rubles, and the Optima “Standard” 2.0 (150 hp) and 6-speed manual transmission - 1,344,900 rubles, that is, 228,100 rubles. (14%) cheaper. Both models are equipped with: front, side and curtain airbags, stability control, audio system, power windows on all doors, alloy wheels, heated front seats, power folding and heated side mirrors. The difference between these trim levels is that the “Japanese” engine starts with a button, has fog lights and has dual-zone climate control, and not air conditioning like the “Korean”. But at the same time, Kia is equipped with cruise control.

However, the above comparison is not correct from a transmission point of view. After all, the Japanese sedan is equipped with an “automatic” and not a manual transmission. Let's correct this inaccuracy. Kia Optima “Comfort” 2.0 (150 hp) 6AT is sold for 1,474,900 rubles, that is, 98,100 rubles. (6%) cheaper. In the “Comfort” package, the “Korean”, in addition to the “Classic”, received: a heated steering wheel, a rain sensor, gear shift paddles, fog lights and climate control. It turns out that in this version Optima looks preferable to its opponent not only in price, but also in terms of the set of options.

Let's skip the numerous intermediate versions and immediately compare the top-end configurations. The Toyota Camry “Executive Safety” with a 3.5-liter V-engine (249 hp) and 8-speed automatic transmission costs 2,499,000 rubles, and the Kia Optima “GT” with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine (245 hp) and a 6-speed automatic transmission - 2,054,900 rubles, that is, 444,100 rubles. (18%) cheaper. Both sedans are fully equipped, and here's what they got for the money: heated rear seats, electrically adjustable front seats, knee airbag, four all-round cameras, front and rear parking sensors, 8-inch multimedia screen with navigation, blind monitoring system zones, assistance when reversing out of a parking lot, etc. The Camry certainly has a longer list of installed equipment. The second generation Toyota Safety Sense active safety systems (road sign recognition, lane control and driver fatigue, adaptive cruise control, etc.) are the main distinguishing feature of the Japanese car. Whether these technologies correspond to the difference in cost of the two sedans is up to you to decide.

Specifications

The length/width/height of the Toyota Camry 2019 is 4885/1840/1455 mm, the dimensions of the Kia Optima 2019 are 4855/1860/1485 mm, that is, the “Japanese” is longer, but narrower and lower. The wheelbase is shorter for the “Korean” - 2805 mm versus 2825 for the opponent. The ground clearance is the same - 155 mm. The fuel tank of the Korean sedan is noticeably larger - 70 liters versus 60 liters for the opponent. The luggage compartment volume of the Japanese model is smaller - 493 liters versus 510 liters for the competitor.

Toyota Camry 2019 is represented by three gasoline engines: 2.0 (150 hp, 192 Nm); 2.5 (181 hp, 231 Nm); 3.5 (249 hp, 356 Nm), however, like the Kia Optima 2019: 2.0 (150 hp, 196 Nm); 2.4 GDI (188 hp, 241 Nm) and 2.0 T-GDI (245 hp, 350 Nm). In general, rivals have engines in their lineup with very similar characteristics. In conclusion, about the power units, it is worth saying that the “Japanese” can only be equipped with a 6- or 8-speed automatic transmission, and the “Korean” - with a 6-speed “mechanics” or “automatic”.

Now let's compare the dynamic characteristics and fuel efficiency of our opponents. Acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h (fuel consumption in city/highway/combined modes) for Toyota Camry vs Kia Optima is: 2.0 (150 hp) 6AT - 11.0 s (9.7/5 .5/7.1 l) vs 10.7s (11.2/5.8/7.8 l); 2.5 (181 hp) 6AT vs 2.4 (188 hp) 6AT - 9.9 s (11.5/6.4/8.3 l) vs 9.1 s (12, 0/6.2/8.3 l) and 3.5 (249 hp) 8AT vs 2.0 T-GDI (245 hp) 6AT - 7.7 s (12.5/6.4/ 8.7 l) vs 7.4 s (12.5/6.3/8.5 l), respectively. The only thing that catches your eye is the increased gas consumption of the “Korean” with a power of 150 hp. and the best dynamics of the 2.4-liter engine. And don’t forget to mention the most economical modification of the Korean sedan 2.0 (150 hp) 6MT - 9.6 s (10.4/6.1/7.7 l).

Cost of ownership

Now is the time to find out the cost of maintenance. To do this, let's take the basic versions of sedans with 2.0-liter engines and automatic transmissions. We will compare costs up to 60,000 km (inclusive). The service interval for the “Japanese” is 10,000 km, and for the “Korean” - 15,000 km. The results were as follows. Toyota Camry 2019: TO-1 (10,000 km) - 13,648 rubles, TO-2 (20,000 km) - 17,834 rubles, TO-3 (30,000 km) - 13,648 rubles, TO-4 ( 40,000 km) - 26,743 rubles, TO-5 (50,000 km) - 13,648 rubles. and TO-6 (60,000 km) - 17,834 rubles. Total: 103,355 rubles. Kia Optima 2019: TO-1 (15,000 km) - 9,138 rubles, TO-3 (30,000 km) - 11,138 rubles, TO-3 (45,000 km) - 10,219 rubles. and TO-4 (60,000 km) - 16,078 rubles. Total: 46,573 rubles, that is, 56,782 rubles (55%) cheaper. Converted per 1 km of mileage, maintenance costs are: 1 ruble 72 kopecks for Toyota and 78 kopecks for Kia.

How much does CASCO cost? To answer this question, we will use online calculators. As a starting point, we will have a car with a capacity of 150 horsepower for 1,800,000 rubles, which in Moscow will be driven by a married 50-year-old man with 20 years of driving experience and two children. The price for insurance against theft and damage, depending on the company and type of policy for Toyota Camry 2019 vs Kia Optima 2019, is: Rosgosstrakh “Anti-crisis CASCO” - 41,733 rubles. vs RUB 28,312; Liberty Insurance "CASCO Direct" - 98,340 rub. vs RUR 76,850 and MAX “Premium” - 187,100 rub. vs 122,400 rub. respectively. In general, it will be cheaper to insure a Korean sedan.

Summary

The 2019 Toyota Camry is a more high-tech car compared to its competitor. Numerous electronic systems will make the trip not only safer, but also as comfortable as possible. But if advanced technology is not a must for you, then all the magic of this sedan is lost. And the Kia Optima 2019 comes to the fore with its more attractive price both for the car itself and for its maintenance and insurance. The Korean sedan will also delight the buyer with its dynamics, trunk space and an advantage in range due to the larger fuel tank. So the “Korean” has every chance to reduce the gap with his opponent at the end of 2019. Moreover, from January to May (inclusive) of this year he has already demonstrated the seriousness of his intentions. In the first five months of 2019, the following were sold: Camry - 13,390 units, Optima - 9,880 units.

Large sedans are in favor at all times - at least here in Russia. The typical buyer is a man closer to forty, belonging to a wealthy middle class by Russian standards. It’s hard to surprise someone like that, and the demands are high.

The unshakable class leader Toyota Camry underwent restyling a year and a half ago - and confidently won our comparative test (ZR, 2015, No. 4), but the Kia Optima lost it: we complained about the poor ride quality and sound insulation. She also lost in the market war. But it would be foolish to think that hardworking Koreans will accept this state of affairs.

And now we have the new generation Optima. Who can you compare it with if not Camry? The seconds in this duel will be the updated Mazda 6 and Volkswagen Passat B8. All cars have engines with power ranging from 180 to 192 hp. and automatic transmissions.

Unsinkable

The matured Kia Optima is suitable for both lovers of a leisurely, relaxing drive and moderately active drivers.

Toyota Camry is the undisputed leader in the segment, but is no longer young: five years is a serious age by today's standards. And what gives it away more than anything else is the office-style interior. The build quality is high, but the materials are not the best. The wood-look inserts are immediately recognizable as plastic. Silver-plated metal decor does not add points either. Sand interior color? But this is not snow-white Caribbean sand, but our dear, yellow one, from the Ramensky district near Moscow.

The appearance of a soft driver's seat with widely spaced lateral support bolsters does not cause delight, but it is comfortable to sit in. The steering wheel, covered in rough leather, has an optimal cross-section.

But the scattering of rectangular keys on the front panel and the legendary electronic clock take the car to the distant past.

What can Toyota please you with? Good visibility - no cameras are needed (although there is a rear one) or other electronic assistants. And also a spacious rear row with a low central tunnel: passengers are delighted.

The engine and gearbox work smoothly. Petrol 2.5‑liter “four” with a capacity of 181 hp. The one and a half ton sedan confidently pulls throughout the entire rev range - albeit without a spark. The six-speed automatic transmission is a little thoughtful, but it changes gears extremely smoothly and imperceptibly. The frankly empty and longest steering wheel in our quartet (three turns from lock to lock) does not bring any excitement.

Camry is not for fast turns. It's for a quiet ride. A straight track, measured acceleration - this is her element. Good sound insulation (only weak aerodynamic noise makes its way into the cabin) only emphasizes the sedateness of the car. And the main trump card is smoothness. Small things dissolve somewhere in the shock absorbers and silent blocks, and large things respond only with a smooth rocking of the stern. So calm, just calm!

Kia Optima is trying to take revenge for last year's defeat. Mazda 6, Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Passat are categorically against it.

The advantages and disadvantages of the Kia Optima 2018-2019 in the new body were identified based on reviews from real owners. More detailed pros and cons of the Kia Optima 2.0 and 2.4 with automatic and manual can be found in the stories below.

Owner reviews

Great car! The car is 1.5 months old. Nice appearance, pleasant controls. Even with a 2.0 liter engine, excellent dynamics. Good sound insulation at high speed. Very light steering wheel, cruise control in the simplest configuration, spacious interior, especially in the rear.

Given my height (190 cm), it’s comfortable in any of the seats and there’s even room for adjustments behind the wheel! True, I can’t get used to the large size of the car (the previous car was of a lower class). Gasoline consumption on the highway is about 7 liters per 100 km, in the city about 11 liters per 100 km.

Among the shortcomings, I note a small opening in the trunk and large hinges. Ground clearance is stated to be 155 mm, but it seems to me that it is less. The springs in the rear are very soft - there are two people in the seat, and the sag of the rear suspension is as if there were 500 kg of cargo in the trunk!

Vladimir, drives a Kia Optima 2.4 (150 hp) 2016

I purchased this car after a 2007 AUDI Q7, which needed expensive repairs. In addition, the car was needed mainly for the track. Of course, the Audi drives better, but these are completely different cars.

Six months have passed since the purchase of the Kia Optima GT, and we can draw the first conclusions. I rolled it in carefully. After 10,000 km, the car actually began to have very decent dynamics. It doesn’t take off like a hurricane from a standstill (unpleasantly surprised), but from a speed of 30 km/h it is very brisk, and from 50 km/h it slips. There are simply no problems with overtaking on the track; the dynamics are very decent at any speed. Definitely missing all-wheel drive!

6-speed automatic transmission works great. Consumption on the highway while cruising at a speed of ~105 km/h is 6 liters. In the city there are 11-12 liters, but with very active driving you can increase it to 16. A slight, rapid “triple” of the engine appeared when warming up, I’ll pay attention to that. Gasoline is only 95 from a proven gas station. Doesn't eat butter.

The suspension is very comfortable and really adapts to the road surface. It rides on the dirt road like it does on asphalt. A couple of times along the highway, when getting into deep and “sharp” holes, the suspension triggered a breakdown, which was not very pleasant, but the holes were really big.

The slightly less “sharp” steering is annoying, and it practically does not change depending on even when the “sport” mode is turned on, which cannot be said about the sensations of the car’s dynamics, which are radically different from the “eco” mode. The car does not feel the ruts.

The lateral support of the seats is designed, perhaps, only for a very large driver and passenger. There is a lot of space in the car. The trunk is huge. In the rear, three passengers can be accommodated very comfortably. The noise level is good, but the sound insulation of the wheel arches fails. The music is great. The climate works great. The high beam is excellent, but the low beam, even after additional adjustment (raised a little higher), is only good for four.

The owner drives a KIA Optima GT 2.0 (245 hp) 2016.

Impressions from the car. Everyone says about the 2.0 engine (150 hp), it doesn’t run, it doesn’t overtake trucks. Well, I don’t know, but it works for me. Of course, not a fighter, but enough for me. I am a family man, I have children, there is no hurry.

Consumption on the highway in sport mode at a speed of 130-140 km/h is approximately 7.5-9 liters of 95 gasoline, in the city in a relaxed manner 10-11 liters, in sport mode in the city with air conditioning - 15 liters, without air conditioning - 12-13 l. I have never driven in eco mode, they say the consumption will be even lower.

The automatic transmission doesn’t kick in normal mode, you don’t even feel it when it shifts, but in sport mode it kicks a little (from second to third). Many people write that the box itself adapts to the driving style, so if you drive dynamically (aggressively) all the time in sport mode, then it will not kick.

The suspension is normal on 17-inch wheels, it absorbs small and medium-sized bumps, but is a bit harsh for deep bumps. The handling is good, you don’t feel the speed, but sometimes it recognizes the track under the wheels. The noise is not bad, but there is noise from the arches. Interior comfort is 5 stars.

What I didn’t like about the Optima was the slippery steering wheel, which was covered with very smooth leather (maybe leatherette). I don't know how long it will last. Also, the car has painfully wide sills, and children always get their trouser legs dirty.

What I miss about it is all-round visibility (although more expensive trim levels have it). The car is big, and the hood is wide, so I won’t get used to the dimensions when driving into the garage.

Review of Kia Optima 2.0 with automatic 2017

Video review

I won’t comment much on the appearance. In my opinion, it looks solid with a slight hint of sportiness, but nothing more.

The interior is where it gets interesting. It reminds me of the interiors of German cars, especially Audis from five to seven years ago. The console is turned towards the driver. All buttons are at hand. The quality of the materials is on par with the competition and, of course, head and shoulders above what I've driven before.

The trunk is huge. In the underground there is a full-size spare wheel on a cast disk, but there are no additional niches or compartments, although on the same Rio there were convenient compartments for storing small things. In general, in terms of arranging the trunk, for some reason the Koreans do not look at the same Germans, who have a bunch of mesh hooks and other things in the trunk.

Engine and gearbox. The fundamental point when transferring from Rio to a new car was that the dynamics of the new car should be better, or the same as in Rio. Rio drove very briskly with a manual transmission for a cheap car, about 10 seconds to 100 km/h. Accordingly, I didn’t even look at the 2.0-liter Optima, since the power reserve for overtaking on the highway was important to me.

In principle, I didn’t expect anything supernatural from the 2.4 engine, given the huge mass of the car (1.7 tons, which is 200 kg heavier than the same “six”). In fact, it turned out that the Optima is a little more dynamic than the Rio. According to the passport, the Optima is 1.0 second faster, but on the move you don’t feel it somehow, perhaps due to much better sound insulation and dimensions.

Suspension. This is just a breakthrough for the Koreans. I think it’s no secret that the suspension is the weak point of all Korean cars, not in terms of reliability, but in terms of tuning. In my review of Rio, I wrote about this in detail. In this regard, Optima is a breakthrough for Korean cars: the suspension is energy-intensive, but at the same time does not swing. Smoothness at a very good level

The owner drives a Kia Optima 2.4 (188 hp) AT 2016.

Where can I buy?

About the salon: there really is a lot of space! For example, in the 2012 Accord I couldn’t sit behind myself (height is 182 cm), but here even my knees don’t reach the front seat. The seats are very comfortable, the lower part is long (unlike the Japanese), and there part of the leg always “hangs” in the air.

About the engine: the engine is the number 1 reason to buy this car. Under the hood is a 245-horsepower engine, which, despite the efficiency of a regular four-cylinder engine, drives no worse, and in some cases even better than six-cylinder engines. I will say in advance that I will not judge the resource, time will tell.

Consumption now does not rise above 10 liters per hundred. I'm still running it in for now. Even if you drive actively, I don’t think it will be more than on an Accord, but the car drives completely differently.

The automatic works slowly, shifts slowly, it seems to me, but with such an engine you don’t notice this, since it pulls at any speed, negating the automatic’s errors.

The suspension is similar to that of the Accord, but is rather harsh due to the 18-inch wheels. There is a huge difference with a car that had 16-inch wheels, but you have to pay for beauty with comfort!

Review of Kia Optima GT 2.4 (245 hp) automatic 2016

As for the Japanese car, it almost always enjoyed enviable popularity among domestic buyers. Just recently, the Korean equivalent of the KIA Optima took aim at his leadership qualities, which, by the way, looks like quite a worthy competitor, capable of pushing the Japanese off the pedestal. Despite this, the Japanese are also not asleep, and are ready to offer a new version of Camry.

Impeccable sedan

Ratings and sales

At the beginning of the 2000s, many large automobile corporations built their factories in Russia and tried to stay on the domestic market as long as possible. However, the Japanese company took a slightly different path. While most companies produced exclusively compact versions of crossovers, the Japanese company decided to launch Camry. And looking ahead, it should be noted that we took absolutely the right step. Since there was localization, cars began to be sold at a fairly attractive price, which had a positive effect on consumer demand. Just a few years ago, Camry was sold in approximately the same volumes as all cars in its class combined. For example, in 2017, more than 28 thousand cars were sold. This is an incredibly high figure, considering that the cars are, to put it mildly, expensive.

Korean sedan

  • At the moment, Camry has gotten rid of its rather lush body, which has already become quite boring for many users. The exterior began to look in a sporty style, which is not bad.
  • As for the Optima, it is the only car of its brand that has such large dimensions. In addition, driving performance is also excellent here.

Over the past few months, the demand for Korean cars has increased, Russians bought almost 13 thousand cars. Such interest in the Korean car can be explained by the fact that it has now received a much brighter design, and the pricing policy has become more lenient.

Engine and transmission

As for the American Camry car market, there is an opportunity to purchase updated engines that have not been used until now. For the Russian consumer, things are somewhat different. The basic option, as before, will be a 2-liter unit with a maximum power of 150 horsepower, as well as an automatic six-speed transmission. As for the dynamics indicators, nothing is clear here yet. It is quite possible that the car will be able to cover the first hundred kilometers per hour in 10.4 seconds, just like the previous model in the series. For such a huge and respectable sedan, such an engine will clearly not be enough in some situations. If the dynamics indicator is very important, then you should pay attention to the option that runs on 2.5 liters. This engine is capable of operating at 181 horsepower. The previous generation Camry, thanks to this engine, could reach 100 kilometers per hour in 9 seconds. These two modifications operate on a six-speed automatic transmission.

The main news related to the technical feature is related to the top version of the car. A 3.5-liter engine is already installed here, there is a V-shaped six. The main advantageous feature of this car is that it has a combined fuel injection system. In other markets, a similar model is capable of delivering 305 horsepower. As for the domestic market, versions operating at 249 horsepower will be sold here. Here, an updated eight-speed automatic transmission will also be available.

As for the basic version of KIA, it still has the same 2-liter engine producing 150 horsepower. However, the Optima-2.0 version can offer a manual transmission, which for many buyers is a significant advantage. In order to purchase a 6-speed automatic, you will have to pay a little extra. The first option is capable of accelerating to 100 kilometers per hour in 9.6 seconds, and the option with an automatic transmission in 10.7 seconds.

The Optima version with a 2.4-liter engine is capable of already delivering 188 horsepower. Despite this, this option does not provide any additional strength compared to its Japanese counterpart; the car accelerates to 100 kilometers per hour in 9.1 seconds. As for the most expensive version of the car, here, unlike the Camry, there is a turbocharged V4, which, with a volume of 2 liters, has a power of 245 horsepower. This option will allow you to accelerate to 100 kilometers per hour in just 7.4 seconds, and the maximum speed of the car is 240 kilometers per hour.

Pricing policy and configurations

The very first and affordable version of the Camry was called Standard, and this option will cost 1 million 390 thousand rubles. The car package, in this case, includes: heated seats, climate control, full power package, the ability to start the car without a key, a high-quality audio system, light sensors and high-quality LED headlights. Of course, there are many more different little things here, but it’s worth listing only the most necessary and interesting ones.

Quality sedan

As for the modification called Standard Plus, there is a 2-liter version for 1 million 499 thousand rubles, as well as a 2.5 liter version for 1 million 623 thousand rubles. There are front and rear paktronics, a high-quality leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated seats, mirrors and windshield, high-quality cruise control and an equally high-quality multimedia system with a large seven-inch screen. The more expensive version may also offer a special induction system for charging smartphones. As for the Classic version, here, in addition to everything, there is also a high-quality leather interior, as well as electric drive for the front seats of the car. The price in this case is 1 million 549 thousand rubles. In this case, in order to get a 2.5 liter engine, you will have to additionally pay more than 150 thousand rubles.

As for the Safety version, it will cost 1 million 818 thousand rubles, and Prestige Safety will cost 1 million 930 thousand rubles. Both of these options have only a 2.5 liter engine.

As for the first option, there will be: high-quality 17-inch wheels, reliable heated steering wheel and front seats, a more advanced rear view camera, an airbag on the wheel, and also a fairly high-quality cruise control. Among other things, it is simply impossible to ignore the special emergency braking function on roads, as well as a special collision warning system.

The second option was equipped with high-quality 18-inch wheels, an interesting and very high-quality ionizer, and an improved audio system. There is also now an eight-inch screen.

A variation that uses a V6 engine can be purchased for 2 million 166 thousand rubles. This price is calculated only for the Luxury package. As for the most expensive version of the car, it costs 2 million 341 thousand rubles.

As for Optima's pricing policy, in this case they are more affordable. The basic version of the car with a manual transmission will cost 1 million 209 thousand rubles. However, in this case, the car’s equipment is of much lower quality. Only air conditioning, a standard radio and 16 inch wheels are already installed here. The Comfort modification will cost 1 million 329 thousand 900 rubles. There will already be climate control and a rain sensor, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The luxury version of the car will cost 1 million 449 thousand rubles. There are: alloy wheels, an electric driver's seat, and an electric handbrake. With this version, you can purchase, for an additional 80 thousand rubles, a version of the car with a 2.4 liter engine. Prestige version will cost 1 million 529 thousand rubles. Here the changes are only related to additional blind spot monitoring systems, as well as the ability to access the interior without a key.

The most expensive modification of the car is called GT. This option will cost 1 million 879 thousand rubles. In this case, 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, an improved sports steering wheel, and a specialized all-round viewing function are installed.

What to choose in the end

As for the Japanese car, it has been significantly improved from a visual point of view, but technically it has remained virtually unchanged. Among other things, servicing the Japanese model will cost quite a tidy sum. But, he is simply gorgeous in the cabin.

The Korean car can offer good technical features, as well as a manual transmission. Moreover, it is a little more economical and will cost less in maintenance. However, in this case, it has a less interesting design and much less technical capabilities than the Camry.
