Although second-row passengers can’t stretch their legs, they do have personal climate control and an armrest with cup holders. An iDrive washer with a touch pad that allows you to enter letters, a dashboard display and a very nice, but still optional, M-steering wheel with a heating button in the very center of the steering wheel.

As before, the console is turned towards the driver and, of course, the main feature of all BMWs of recent years is the gesture control. For example, if the driver wants to adjust the volume, he just needs to move his finger in the air.

BMW X3 engines

Under the hood of the 2017 BMW X3 received for a test drive was a Turbo six, in-line, as it should be with a BMW with 360 hp. In addition, if the units are switched to sport mode, the response of the car to the gas pedal will become sharper, and it will become louder. The way the engine shoots into the muffler during regassing is worth a lot. It feels like the 40i engine has an infinite amount of thrust. 360 HP they seem to come exactly at the moment when you ask for them with the gas pedal. Instantaneously, with almost no delay, the gearbox downshifts, regardless of whether you are driving uphill or downhill.

During the BMW X3 test drive, we tried the car on long straights and I must say that we had few rivals in the left lane. There is so much traction that speed limits are exceeded very quickly and almost imperceptibly, because in terms of sound insulation and comfort, even in sport mode, everything here is very high.

Handling is also in order. In vain, that the chassis of the M-performance version does not differ in excessive rigidity. In sport mode, the X3 allows you to cut serpentines of winding paths with high quality, but still does not differ in the furious rigidity that is inherent in real track "ems". Here everything seems to be in moderation, but you really don’t want to anneal on the turns. The car is a little high, heels and it is felt that there is still a limit.

In general, there is some dissonance between the suspension settings and the capabilities of the power unit, because on winding paths at high speed you feel a lack of suspension stiffness, although in the usual driving modes the suspension causes only delight.

If you go to the side of the road in comfort mode, then nothing changes. Comfort is the main thing that surprises X3 even in M performance. There are several modes of operation of the chassis and power units. So, in comfort mode, the car practically does not feel speed bumps, as if they were not there at all, it only notes their presence with tire slaps.

If you put the car into sport mode, the car will become more collected, but still remain within comfortable limits. Even while driving on cobblestones in sport mode, the car does not hint at the fact that the surface is far from ideal. In fact, there are two sports chassis modes here: the standard "Sport" mode and the "Sport Plus" mode. In the second mode, the crossover, it seems, should become tougher, but it does not.

Off-road BMW X3 test drive

For the off-road test drive of the X3, a mountainous sandy area strewn with stones was chosen, which required impressive ground clearance, good geometry and all-wheel drive to confidently move uphill.

To overcome this off-road, the organizers of the test drive gave us diesel cars. They look a little simpler than M performance cars. They have a more relaxed design of bumpers and, accordingly, a slightly better geometric cross. Most importantly, they have a three-liter six-cylinder diesel engine that develops 265 hp in Europe, while in our country this engine is slightly clamped for the sake of tax breaks and produces 249 hp.

The new BMW X3 appeared on the Russian car market a few months later, but you can apply for it today, since prices are known. The most affordable gasoline "X-three" costs almost 3 million rubles. The most expensive one, which has an engine with the 40i index, costs 1 million rubles more.

In the spirit of the latest BMW models, the media system display is now installed in a separate housing on top of the front panel, and some functions can be controlled with gestures without touching the screen. The blind at the base of the center console is tilted more than before, and virtual instruments are available for an extra charge. The creators promise more space for passengers, already in the basic configuration, the rear seat back is divided in a ratio of 40:20:40, and all three parts now have tilt adjustment. The trunk volume has not changed with the change of generations: from 550 to 1600 liters.

Following the “five” and “seven”, the BMW X3 crossover was transferred to the CLAR modular platform, but with McPherson struts in front and the original five-link rear suspension. Optimization of the design allowed to reduce the weight of the machine by 55 kg. But the air suspension is still not allowed for the SUV, although the Mercedes GLC and Audi Q5 are equipped with it for a surcharge. Three modifications will be the first to enter the market, and their selection looks strange. Diesel crossovers xDrive20d with a two-liter engine (190 hp) and xDrive30d with a three-liter “six” (265 hp) will become massive, but they will be accompanied by a fundamentally new “charged” version of the X3 M40i. Previously, only the related coupe-crossover BMW X4 had such a version, but for the “X-third” they prepared another engine of the B58 modular family. A three-liter in-line turbo six develops 360 hp. and 500 Nm and can accelerate the crossover to 100 km / h in 4.8 s. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Other differences include a different exhaust system, brakes, suspension and wheels.

"Calm" petrol versions are expected later. At the very end of the year, the range will be replenished by the BMW X3 xDrive30i with a two-liter turbo engine with a capacity of 252 hp, although for Russia the power will certainly be reduced to 250 “horses”. And in the spring of 2018, the BMW X3 xDrive20i will appear with the same engine, derated to 184 hp. Especially for America, a rear-wheel drive version of the sDrive20i is also being prepared. Without exception, all engines are paired with an eight-speed "automatic". According to preliminary information, a hybrid crossover and an extreme BMW X3 M will be presented later.

The new X3 got hold of a whole list of options not available for its predecessor. For example, you can order three-zone climate control, front seat ventilation, an air ionizer and air freshener, a key fob with a built-in color display, and a Wi-Fi transmitter for ten devices. The rudiments of an autopilot have also appeared: the crossover can track markings, road signs and other cars, lane keeping works at speeds up to 210 km / h, and later the lane change function will appear. The basic equipment has LED headlights and 18-inch wheels (previously the smallest were 17-inch).

The new BMW X3 will be produced at the same plant in Spartanburg, USA, where the old crossover and the X4, X5 and X6 models are produced. Moreover, at the presentation of the model, the company's management announced that by 2021 it would invest $600 million in the enterprise, expand production capacity and create another thousand jobs. All this is for future crossovers, among which the flagship X7 will appear.

As for the new X3, the start of sales in Europe is scheduled for November. Around the same time, cars will appear in Russia, and a little later they will be assembled at Avtotor in Kaliningrad.
