It was a really tiny (three and a half meters) car with two powertrain options - a gasoline atmospheric volume of 1100 cm3 and a gasoline turbocharged volume of 600 cm3. The new SUV claimed to compete with the Suzuki Samurai and had a frame, an Easy Select transfer case (Pajero's legacy) and a solid rear axle in its arsenal. In Japan, the car appeared under the name IO, which means “I” in Italian, and a year later, after preparing for production in Italy, the small Pajero entered the European market. But here he already appeared under the name Pinin. Everything like adults

Pre-styling Pajero Pinin / IO (1999-2000) were designed according to all "off-road" canons. Only two features did not allow Pinin to be classified as a full-fledged off-road conqueror. Too many levers

The 2002 Pinin/IO line facelift affected only minor elements. The bumpers and plastic elements of the body kit were slightly updated, the “turn signals” in the headlights became fashionable white, and the headlights themselves grew slightly in size. The designer's hand also touched some small things in the cabin, but this is not very noticeable both at first and subsequent glances. As for official sales, they went, as they say, neither shaky nor rolls. The car did not hit the mainstream mainly because of the rather high price. Pinin (most often the three-door version) was purchased "in addition" to the large Pajero, and it was intended for the wife. The friend of life was often simply not able to appreciate the off-road qualities of the car, but she had difficulties with an additional lever and a lot of incomprehensible symbols and inscriptions. The decision was not long in coming, and in 2002 an urban version appeared with a greatly simplified transmission. The FT4 was constantly distributing torque to the bridges in a 50:50 ratio through the viscous coupling with no way to turn anything on or off at all. No downshift, no locks, no lever in the cabin. From a technical point of view, the three and five-door versions (both left-hand drive and right-hand drive) are almost identical. All of them have one range of engines and options with automatic and manual transmission. The only difference is in the kits. By the way, most IOs are equipped with a multifunctional display that displays a lot of information, and on expensive trim levels, its place is taken by a navigation system that is useless in Russia. The interior of the three-door versions is no more ascetic than the five-door ones. When it came time to change the car, I thought about the Suzuki Jimny. The desire has almost taken shape in the car, but the dealers did not have the necessary equipment. Then they began to search through the ads and came across Pinin. It immediately caught my eye that he was prettier than Jimny, and this was a turning point. And still pleased with the rare equipment. The combination of a 1.6 MPI engine with a three-door body, a sunroof and headlight washers is not found on Japanese cars. During the time that I had a car, they changed some kind of rubber bands for 700 rubles and for the prevention of a timing belt for 6,000 rubles with work. The rest seems to be working. I really like the presence of all sorts of different off-road modes. I went into the mud only once - for the first time in my life I just turned on “4LLc” and drove everything myself. Even my husband was offended that I didn’t let him ride. Yes, more than 90 km / h on the road is already poorly controlled, but in the mud it's just great. We have a dacha, and we have to drive 5 km to it on a very bad road. There, of all, only me and my dad drive in an UAZ. And in the city it’s such a pleasure not to be afraid of curbs, to look at the rebuilding in large mirrors and feel the attitude towards the car as a serious jeep.


The brilliance and poverty of GDI

As for the features of service, on this account, all services, alas, are unanimous: the elements of the fuel system of GDI engines do not withstand the realities of Russian fuel, and the electrician does not withstand the realities of the Russian winter. The Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin crossover, not too well known in the domestic car market, was produced by a Japanese company from 1998 to 2005. And, unlike the first generations of the basic version of the car (that is, the usual Pajero), it received pretty decent off-road properties. Other features of this car include a unique design - although because of this, the car was produced in limited quantities. For 8 years, no more than 300 thousand copies were collected, although even now they are not so difficult to find on the secondary market - moreover, at a very affordable price.

Model History

The debut of the Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin took place in 1998, 16 years after the start of production of the first original Pajero. The new car was named after the famous Italian design bureau Pininfarina, which created models for the Paris-Dakar rally. It was his specialists who developed changes in the design of the crossover - here, in Italy, they also assembled the first Pajero Panin for the European market. For sale in Japan and Brazil, the car was produced at Japanese production facilities.

The results of the first sales showed that European buyers do not really need a new version. During the year, several times fewer crossovers were sold here than in the Japanese market. And after a while, the popularity of the car also fell. Perhaps because the car was a little ahead of its time - now it could compete with such models as Suzuki Jimny and Daihatsu Terios.

In 2005, the production of an off-road vehicle ceased due to insufficient popularity. Although for Brazil, the same model continued to be assembled on the basis of TR4. And they finished collecting only in 2014. Now a car can be purchased for only 3-4 thousand dollars - much cheaper than crossovers of similar characteristics.

Design and interior of different versions of Pinin

A significant part of the technical solutions of the Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin was taken from the base car. And among the changes developed by designers from Italy, you should pay attention to the following features:

  • improved off-road performance and good maneuverability;
  • updated protective elements - from plastic overlays for pallets to spectacular thresholds;
  • massive wings, giving the car a serious and impressive look.

In 2005, just before the end of the release, the last restyling appeared (there were three in total), which differed from the original Panin in chrome door handles and Mitsubishi logos. In addition, the updated car could see redesigned roof rails and alloy wheels. And the colors of the side mirrors match the color of the body.


The interior trim of the new Mitsubishi crossover is identical to the regular Pajero model of the corresponding model year. From the driver's side, you can see exactly the same blue dials and a CD player on the front console, and when you open the rear door, you can see almost the same compact luggage compartment. Although the three-door version has a significantly smaller trunk compared to the standard Pajero, space for second-row passengers is even more lacking.

In the five-door modifications of the vehicle, there is more space - both in the luggage compartment and on the second row of seats. Moreover, this option can be called a truly five-seater. Overall dimensions of the car

The dimensions of the Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin are significantly smaller compared to the regular Pajero - only the width of these crossovers is the same. The length of the three-door model was 3.735 m, the five-door model was exactly 300 mm longer. The ground clearance is not too high - but this shortcoming is fully compensated by short overhangs.

Another difference between versions with a different number of doors and seats is the volume of the luggage compartment. In a compact model, it is only 166 liters, in a long modification - twice as much. With the expansion of the second row of seats, the space in the trunk becomes even larger, although in this case the car can only accommodate the driver and one passenger.

At the end of the last century, Pininfarina received an order from Mitsubishi Motors to develop the design of a compact SUV, the “little brother” of the Pajero, and in 1998 it began to be produced in Japan under the name iO, which simply means “I” in Italian. A year later, the car was introduced to the Old World, where it became known as Pinin. The name is taken from the name of Pininfarina. By the way, in Italian the word pinin means "the youngest, the youngest." The symbolic name for the smallest SUV in the European Mitsubishi range.

A year after the debut, the 5-door Pajero Pinin entered the series. Its appearance, like the appearance of its 3-door "brother", was developed with the participation of the Italian design studio Pininfarina. The car received a new version of the 2-liter engine equipped with direct fuel injection (GDI) equipment. Choice of manual or automatic transmission.

Active movement is facilitated by a rigid and energy-intensive suspension. Pinin does not save off-road either, because with its high ground clearance and excellent Super Select 2 4WD-i transmission, like on a large Pajero, the car is able to storm quite serious off-road sections.

Four-wheel drive can be connected without stopping and without even braking (if the car goes no higher than 100 km / h). The front axle is connected by an automatic clutch. If the car is ambushed, a downshift with a blocked viscous coupling (the most “heavy” mode) comes to the rescue.

In all modes, the rear limited-slip differential of the Torsen type helps a lot - it adds patency and prevents the rear wheels from slipping.

The Pinin standard equipment for the Russian market includes: air conditioning with a carbon air filter, heated front seats, two front airbags, central locking, an audio system (optionally with a CD changer), alloy wheels, roof rails, branded seat trim with a “tread” pattern .
