Interior and ergonomics

Interior design is quite simple, cheap, hard plastic is used in the decoration. Even in the maximum configuration, there are no fabric inserts in the doors, instead they are all the same plastic, and the steering wheel is covered with poorly dressed leather.


At the same time, the ergonomics of the cabin is not bad. Controls are conveniently located, information from the dashboard is easy to read. The designers have added some innovations to the interior, designed to awaken the feeling of care in the driver and passengers. Among these elements are a pocket for small items sewn into the side of the driver's seat and a smartphone stand in the place where the ashtray should be.

The car is declared as a five-seater, but in fact only four can comfortably accommodate in the cabin. There is enough space in front for the driver and passenger of almost any build, but this is not the main trump card of the car. Thanks to the extended base and the sofa shifted back, the rear passengers have more legroom. There is also enough headroom, according to this indicator, Rapid is catching up with the company's flagship model - Superb.


The trunk volume is also impressive - 550 liters. By folding the rear sofa, the luggage compartment can be increased to one and a half cubic meters. The trunk mat was made double-sided - on the one hand it is textile, on the other - rubber, so that, if necessary, you can put dirty cargo in the trunk.

Specifications

The dimensions of the Skoda Rapid fit into the B-class and exceed the dimensions of the single-platform and direct competitor Volkswagen Polo sedan. The length, width and height of the Czech car are, respectively, 4483x1706x1461 mm. The wheelbase is also longer than that of the German and is 2602 mm. The clearance of the European Rapid is 136 mm, but the Russian version was raised to 150 mm. The weight of a fully equipped car, in the maximum configuration, is 1236 kg. The "emptiest" version weighs 100 kg less.


Russian buyers can purchase a car with one of three petrol engines. Skoda does not supply diesel power units to our country, and it is not known whether it will supply it.

The base three-cylinder engine has a working volume of 1.2 liters. It is equipped with a twin-shaft 12-valve gas distribution mechanism. The maximum power of this power unit is 75 hp. at 5400 rpm. Torque reaches 112 Nm at 3750 rpm. Of course, one can only dream of good dynamics with such a “heart”: the car accelerates to a hundred in almost 14 seconds. This engine works only in tandem with a five-speed manual gearbox. The manufacturer claims that fuel consumption in urban conditions does not exceed 8.4 liters per 100 km, and 4.8 liters on the highway.


The second engine is a four-cylinder 1.6-liter 16-valve 105-horsepower. Exactly the same is installed on the Volkswagen Polo sedan. Its maximum torque is 153 Nm at 3800 rpm. This motor is aggregated either with a five-speed manual gearbox or with a six-speed "automatic". The fuel consumption of this engine, paired with the "mechanics", is slightly more than the previous one - 8.9 liters in the city and 4.9 on the highway. But when paired with an “automatic”, the appetite increases markedly: in the city, it needs 10 liters of gasoline per 100 km of track, on highway 6. A car with mechanics picks up a “hundred” in 10.6 seconds, with automatic transmission - in almost 12 seconds.

The Czechs made the top engine a 1.4-liter 122-horsepower turbocharged power unit, familiar from the Skoda Yeti model. Its torque is exactly 200 Nm from 1500 to 4000 rpm. This engine works in conjunction with a seven-speed DSG robotic gearbox. This pair allows the car to accelerate to hundreds in 9.5 seconds, while fuel consumption, according to the company, will be about 7.4 liters in the city and 4.8 on the highway.


Skoda Rapid is built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Polo sedan, and structurally differs little from it. The front suspension of the car is independent with MacPherson struts, a torsion beam is used at the rear. Czech engineers worked quite carefully on the settings, as a result, the car holds the road well and maintains precise control even in difficult road conditions.

Power plant and transmission

As for engines, there are also several points caused by the company's policy regarding regional automotive markets. At the first stage of Russian sales, only the gasoline range of engines will be available, the diesel unit will not yet enter the Russian market. Gasoline installations are provided in two volumes - 1.2 and 1.6 liters, 75 and 105 hp. respectively. There is a turbocharged petrol variant, which, with its 1.4 liters, produces more than 120 horses. The diesel will have similar characteristics to the 1.6-liter version. In the choice of automatic transmission, there are both a 5-speed manual (by default), and automatic in 6 or 7 steps. The base model with the weakest engine can only be equipped with a manual transmission. Advanced options are equipped with automatic transmissions. The largest engine in the series - 1.6 liters - involves the installation of a 7-speed gearbox without a mechanical option.
Two models were available for a test drive - 1.2 and 1.6 liters (both 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic were available on the latter). The 1.2-liter version in the liftback body showed unimpressive driving performance. The start of the model turned out to be too slow, the acceleration was also slow. Nevertheless, the box works just fine, there was not a single hitch when shifting gears, but the power of the base engine is obviously not enough for a one and a half ton car. The version with a 1.6 liter unit and a 6-speed gearbox - the “automatic” proved to be much more cheerful. The car gained speed confidently, the box also worked without failures. I would also like to test “in the field” both the top-end and diesel models, but they were not provided for the run.


Rapid is a fairly economical car. According to the designers, this was achieved through long and painstaking work on innovations that would reduce fuel consumption. Most of them were embodied in the Skoda Rapid. According to the manufacturer, fuel consumption for a 1.2-liter engine with mechanics will be no more than 6 liters. On a test drive, the car spent a little more, but, in our opinion, this is due to the novelty of the car itself, that is, it has not yet been corny run-in. After being in operation for some time, fuel consumption will undoubtedly decrease and enter the declared range. The 1.6 liter model consumes fuel depending on the installed gearbox. The mechanics for 100 kilometers require only 6.4 liters, while the machine will require a little more - 7.5 liters. The top-end engine with an automatic will require only 5.8 liters in the combined cycle to work. Naturally, the most economical unit is the diesel version, which is not yet available for Russia. Its consumption is only 4.4 liters on the combined cycle.

Vehicle interior

Above the interior of the model also did a great job. The manufacturer went all out on the interior design of the car at 100%. In addition to a pleasant design, the cabin provides a sufficient level of comfort for 4 passengers. Interior design depends on the configuration of the car. However, even in the basic configuration, the car provides driving comfort, without creating any inconvenience for the driver while driving by the design of the dashboard and center console - the instruments are not obstructed by anything, all indicators are easily visible. Some will not like a small number of shortcomings. For example, in the cabin, the sled for adjusting the position of the front seats is very noticeable. Nevertheless, against the background of the general harmony in the image of the car, minor miscalculations and imperfections are almost invisible.

The names of the kits are the same as the names for other models. The basic package is considered to be "Active", which includes: 6 airbags, adjustable headrests for passenger and driver seats, an audio system with 4 speakers, a mechanism for adjusting the height of the driver's seat and steering wheel, power windows. The basic package does not include an on-board computer and air conditioning. "Active" is available with installations of 1.2 liters. The same engine is provided in the Ambition kit, which in addition is equipped with an on-board computer and air conditioning. The price for these configurations is 479 thousand and 549 thousand, respectively. The 1.6-liter engine can be installed in any of three trim levels. The price range starts from 529 and ends with 689 thousand rubles. The top installation is offered for trim levels "Ambition" and "Elegance". The price in this case reaches 724 thousand. The Elegance set, in addition to all the options already mentioned, also includes climate control. Due to the delayed start of sales of the diesel unit, information is not yet available for Russians on both configurations with a diesel engine and possible prices for them.

Summing up

We are waiting for a modification with an economical diesel engine and a hatchback body on the Russian market. Skoda Rapid, in our opinion, is more than worthy of the attention of the Russian consumer, especially after the positive results that we received on a test drive, even taking into account the fact that we did not manage to test the entire range of engines in practice. Any of its equipment - from the economical "base" to the advanced "Elegance" deserve a close look and high marks. It should be expected that the new Skoda will be able to occupy its niche in the market of our country and find its consumer, especially since there are a lot of prerequisites for this. Rapid came out as a whole very practical, and, moreover, a harmoniously designed car, which maintains the reputation of the Swedish brand already established in Russia as a supplier of reliable and, moreover, justifying its price of cars.
