Second generation Land Rover Freelander in the aftermarket. TD4 diesel engine Land rover freelander 2 weak points

We tell you what to expect from the most popular "rogue" of the Land Rover brand in Russia - the compact Freelander 2, which preceded the current Discovery Sport.

Land Rover Freelander 2, which replaced the first generation of the junior "rogue" of the legendary off-road family in the mid-2000s, became the best-selling model of the British brand in Russia for many years, surpassing more impressive and better equipped SUVs in popularity. He is also known as the most reliable car in the history of the Land Rover company. But is this statement true?

Background

Crossover Freelander 2 under the factory index L359, which debuted in 2006 at the International Motor Show in London, has become a logical and more perfect continuation of its predecessor. While developing the new Friel, the British have done a tremendous amount of work on the mistakes. Having retained the recognizable style of the first generation car, Land Rover built the second generation of the crossover on the new Ford EUCD (Ford C1 Plus) platform, which also underlies the Ford Mondeo and S-Max / Galaxy, Volvo S80 and XC60.

As a result, the Freelander 2 received more powerful and capable engines. And also a ground clearance of 210 mm, a modified Terrain Response system, like the Discovery 3 and Range Rover, and, accordingly, better cross-country ability. The quality of finishing and equipment has reached a new level. The model, also sold in the US under the name LR2, has become even safer, earning the maximum "5 stars" in European crash tests. During production at a plant in Halwood, UK, near Liverpool, Freelander 2 was updated twice: in 2010 and in 2012.

For the first time, the crossover received a modernized 2.2 turbodiesel, which, instead of 160 forces, developed 150 and 190 "horses" depending on the settings. Also, the 2010 restyling brought the car revised interior trim materials. The second time - two years later - Freelander corrected the shape of the bumpers, the radiator grille, the design of the rims, and added LEDs to the optics. And also other finishing materials and redrawn the front panel with the center console. The main innovation was the 2-liter EcoBoost turbo four instead of the 3.2. In this form, the car was produced for a couple of years - until 2014.

"Resale"

With five engine variations and two gearboxes, the Freelander 2 does not provide its customers with any tangible variety in the aftermarket. After all, three quarters of all sold crossovers of this used model are versions with a 2.2 turbodiesel ( 84% ) and automaton ( 88% ). Cars with a 3.2 petrol "six", available on the model from the very beginning, are a rarity ( 12% ), and with the new gasoline "turbo four" 2.0 from the last restyling, there is a shortage ( 4% ). The manual transmission on this car is also not popular ( 12% ). And it is found only in tandem with a diesel engine on cars until 2012.

Body conscientiously

Good double-sided galvanic treatment of the metal body of the Freelander 2 protects it from corrosion for a long time. But, alas, not completely. Small spots of rust can still appear with age on the rear fenders, in the area of the wheel arches and on the tailgate. Even if the car has not been involved in an accident in the past. And also corrosion occurs in parts of the body that are hidden from prying eyes. For example, at the joints of the front fenders and the bumper. True, to see this, the latter must be dismantled.

The appearance of an aged "Friel" can be spoiled by the peeling coating of the radiator grille and linings on the front fenders for 7300 rubles, as well as above the license plate on the tailgate. From moisture and dirt in this model for several years, the rear wiper electric motor, which costs 12,400 rubles, and the button for unlocking the tailgate for 2900 rubles, "die". And the same fate awaits door locks with age. When inspecting the car, make sure that the headliner and trunk floor are dry. Cases of a sunroof leak and an additional brake light are not uncommon.

Three motors - five options

Initially, the Freelander 2 was equipped with a 233-horsepower "Volvo" atmospheric inline-six 3.2 (i6) and a 160-horsepower 2.2 turbodiesel (DW12) jointly developed by Ford and PSA Peugeot Citroen. The first is considered one of the most successful power units of the Swedish brand. She has a timing chain for 8,700 rubles, which stretches to 250,000 km. For those who like to drive on an almost empty tank, due to the lack of cooling with gasoline in the summer, a submersible fuel pump for 31,000 rubles can "die". Traces of oil drips on this engine often appear due to the short-lived oil separator of the crankcase ventilation system in the valve cover for 7,700 rubles.

But the second - diesel - at first turned out to be capricious and not very reliable. At least until 2008, when the company cured many of his "childhood illnesses" like short-lived fuel injectors for at least 22,000 rubles and a fuel injection pump that rarely lives up to 80,000 km for 40,000 rubles. Also, the owners were troubled by the timing belt tearing up to 130,000 km from 5,000 rubles for an unoriginal and weak camshaft of a high-pressure fuel pump. In more recent versions of this turbodiesel with a capacity of 150 and 190 forces, released in 2010 after the first restyling, the intercooler for 12,500 rubles and its pipes, as well as a cooling radiator for 26,200 rubles, do not differ in durability and tightness. The former is enough for about 70,000 km, while the latter can last twice as long.

The oil in a diesel engine must be changed after 13,000 km, and the candles last up to 80,000 km. The turbine for 58,800 rubles is tenacious and regularly blows at least up to 200,000 km. But only in the less powerful diesel version. The "Ford" 2-liter 240-horsepower "turbo four" (Si4), which replaced the "six" in 2012, cannot boast of problem-free performance, alas, it cannot. There are known cases of burnout of valves on this motor, as well as destruction of partitions between the rings. First of all, the piston group suffers from fans of dynamic driving. Land Rover solved the problem by replacing the software. A malfunction of the "turbo four" will be indicated by triplet, knocking when pressing the gas, blue or gray smoke from the exhaust pipe, as well as a burning Check Engine lamp on the tidy.

Transmission

The Getrag Ford M66 6-speed mechanic, which is rarely found on Freelander, should not be feared. It is quite reliable and will only concern the owner of the crossover by replacing the clutch for 19,200 rubles with a frequency of 50,000 km. The most common Aisin Warner AWF21 assault rifle on this model with the same number of steps bothered only on early cars produced before 2008. Due to slipping and jerking, such boxes were changed under warranty. For the rest, this transmission is durable and without problems before the first large-scale repair it can go about 250,000 km. The main thing is to regularly change the oil in it at least 60,000 km.

One of the unpleasant qualities of the Friel transmission is the hum in the rear of the passenger compartment while driving. At first, dealers treated the problem by replacing the rear final drive, and on later machines, updating its bearings. After 150,000 km, the crossover can crunch and creak the angular transmission of the front gearbox. Around the same time, a cardan shaft from 59,600 rubles will inform the owner of the desire to retire by vibrations. It is important not to miss and replace the drive oil seals that have begun to snot in time.

In addition to replacing the oil and filter every 50,000 km, the multi-plate rear wheel drive clutch up to a mileage of about 150,000 km can only disturb the failure of its oil pump for 33,500 rubles and electronic "brains" for 49,900 rubles. The latter, like the gearbox, as well as other transmission units, require cleaning and drying after driving off the asphalt into the mud and overcoming small fords. This will protect them from overheating and premature wear.

Rest

The "Friel" suspension is characterized by servicemen and owners of this crossover as reliable. Up to 120,000 km, when buzzing wheel bearings of 12,400 rubles each with a hub may be asked for replacement, the chassis worried only the owners of the cars of the first two years of production. For 35,000 km, they worn out steering tips at 2,100 rubles and stabilizer struts at 1,850 rubles, and by 70,000 km, the support bearings of the front struts at 2,150 rubles. Also, sometimes you have to visit the service because of the knocking of the steering rack.

Front shock absorbers for 6,600 rubles and rear for 10,200 rubles on the Freelander 2 go about 150,000 km. For the same run, you may have to change the humming power steering pump for 27,200 rubles. By about 180,000 km, silent blocks from 3400 rubles and ball joints at 1300 rubles will work out their resource. Original brake pads for 4,200 rubles are enough for a SUV for about 50,000 km, and brake discs for 3,700 rubles - up to 140,000 km.

How much?

Finding a Freelander 2 on the secondary market is not cheap. The very first pre-styling cars aged 11-12 years with a mileage of 200,000 km cost no less than 500,000 rubles, regardless of the type of engine and gearbox. For 7-8-year-old crossovers released after the first update with a modernized diesel engine and mileage up to 100,000 - 150,000 km, their owners ask for at least 700,000 rubles. Prices for "Freelander 2" of the second restyling start at 1,000,000 rubles. The most recent 3-4-year-old copies of the model, officially sold in our country and running along Russian roads for about 30,000 km, cost around 1,500,000 rubles.

Our choice

According to the Am.ru editorial board, the junior "rogue" from the Land Rover family, the Freelander 2, is a good buy, which, provided that a "live" and well-groomed specimen is selected, will delight its owner with comfort, quality and reliability for a long time to come. The best option would be an updated 150-horsepower diesel crossover no older than 2010. Such a car with a mileage of less than 150,000 km can be found from 800,000 rubles. An interesting, more dynamic, but also more voracious option can be a SUV with a top-end gasoline "six" no older than 2008, which costs about 600,000 - 750,000 rubles.

Owner reviews

Operation began with a trip to Kuzbass immediately after purchase. I was pleasantly surprised by the car. Fuel consumption on the highway ranges from 8.2 to 9.5 liters, depending on how you press. The city in different ways, but more than 12.8 liters in winter did not rise. In cold weather, the launch is confident, after -12 it warms up with the standard Webasta, although it started without any problems without warming up and at -28, no longer tried - it's a pity.

In the first year, I wound 35 tons. Km. The car passed KK, Khakassia, Kuzbass, Baikal, Buryatia and even visited China. When compared with what I owned before, the comfort, Shumka, chassis, engine and gearbox are at their best.

The chassis is tuned comfortably with minimal roll. Damping much better than Koreans and Japanese.

Engine 160 HP (400 Nm) - sufficient, although you can chip up to 190-200 hp. no problem. Aisin 6-speed automatic - adequate. The stabilization system is very well tuned. Works when needed.

Off-road performance is the best in the class and will give odds to almost all crossovers. An analogue on the off-road is only SGV, but that is only gasoline and still is a general-purpose SUV.

Video review

Impressions after two months of operation and 3,000 km:

- After the sedans, I am glad that you can not think about puddles and pits - high ground clearance, energy-intensive suspension and small overhangs do their job;

- The people in the reviews cannot decide whether the suspension is hard or soft. But in my opinion it is rather tough (for example, asphalt irregularities are transmitted to the steering wheel, and the rolls on turns are minimal), but long-stroke (i.e. you can comfortably ride on a dirt road, do not brake on speed bumps, etc. - it does not break through) ;

- Regular rubber mats have attachments at the bottom, as a result, they, finally, do not fidget and do not get off underfoot. But the driver's mat does not cover the support for the left leg, so you have to choose - put it there only in good weather or dirty the interior;

- When the hatch is opened, some kind of vertical fly swatter rises, which makes a rather loud noise at speeds above 60 km / h, so I use it mainly in the city. I am pleased with the opportunity to close both the hatch and the "panoramic" window with standard nets. I am surprised at the impossibility to close them completely with a ceiling panel, but it does not bother;

- All the positive things that people write in reviews about the exterior / interior - thick doors, comfortable seats, ergonomics, high seating position, comfortable armrests - everything was basically confirmed, it's another matter that after so many sedans I personally don't need a high seating position. But since the steering wheel is well regulated in flight, I also managed to pick up something like the usual "recumbent" landing;

- In the radio tape recorder there is no connector for a flash drive, this is some kind of stone age. But on Cyber it was the same, so I continue to use the FM-MP3 transmitter from the cigarette lighter as usual;

- Average fuel consumption in the city at an average speed of 20 km / h - 13 liters per hundred.

Alexander, review of Land Rover Freelander 3.2 (232 hp) automatic transmission 2011 onwards

The exterior pleases with a view (me in any case) from the front. From the side, the car is absolutely not pleasant, as if it was chopped off in the trunk area, in the back it is a little better. However, in my opinion, it looks much more masculine and brutal than classmates such as X3, Q5 or RX.

I liked the interior very much. At first, there was not enough space in the cabin after the Tahoe, although it is quite enough (my height is 185 cm, weight 92 kg). There is good space above the head, and in the shoulders too, but I would like a little more longitudinal adjustment of the seats.

There is not very much space behind, especially if you move the front seat back, but I took this into account, because a car was purchased for two. There are enough seat adjustments, there is lumbar support, the front seats are very comfortable, the backs are short in the back. The warming up works great, the air conditioning system - for a solid five.

The turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine produces 240 hp. The pickup is just crazy. Freelander managed to impress me even after Tahoe. The overclocking is crazy. Overtaking on the track is a song!

Four-wheel drive is realized through the connection of the rear wheels with a clutch, the connection is absolutely imperceptible. I didn't climb much off-road, the main traffic is the city and the highway. In winter, he climbed into forest drifts, rides confidently, but you need to understand where pampering should end and off-road conditions for an elevator, part-time, mud tires, etc. should begin.

Freelander is controlled smartly and easily. Yes, that's it. Very good visibility, light steering wheel, distinct pedals. No complaints. Keeps the track like a glove in any weather, excluding ice. On the ice it chimes because of the short base.

The consumption of gasoline (pour 95th) in the city is 13.5-14.5 liters on the computer and on the tank, despite the fact that I like to grab it from a traffic light. On the highway, an average of 120-130 km / h and a consumption of 10-11 liters. It seems - quite sane.

Now about the cons ... Peck during braking is quite noticeable. Noisy operation of the rear suspension, on small irregularities the struts knock dully, although they do not pierce. The dealer assures that this is a common misfortune for the Freelander. Poor waterproofing of the side glass seals is very annoying - after washing the glass is very wet for a very long time when lowering and raising. In winter, this resulted in a constant morning freezing of glass.

Review of the Land Rover Freelander 2.0 (240 HP) with a gun of 2013

Yes, the interior could be larger, but enough, Yes, the seats are not of an ideal profile, but there was never any discomfort on a long journey. Yes, the trunk is not very big, but I solved the problem by boxing on the roof. Otherwise, only pluses:

- The armrests are super, as I used to do without them - I can't imagine;

- Rides monumental (2 tons of live steel is something), neither rut nor unevenness bothers you - he smoothes them;

- Very strong windshield: so many contacts with different objects on the track and not a single chip or crack;

- Paintwork and body: dropped the luggage box on the door during dismantling - not a single trace. And after the accident, when I caught up with an old Japanese woman, whose bumper left with a detachment of the fastening - I have only a small chip of paint on the bumper;

- Acceleration dynamics: overtaking is no longer a problem at all with any number of passengers and luggage. Just hit the pedal and that's it! I had to set the speed limiter to 150 km / h, because you don't have time to notice how it is already at 190 km / h dusty;

- The commander's landing: although they wrote a lot about it, but it is really very convenient.

Of the shortcomings, I will only note fuel consumption, but this is the flip side of power: if you want to go fast, pay. I couldn't get less than 14 liters per 100 km.

The owner drives a 2013 Land Rover Freelander 2.0 automatic

Now the mileage is 30 thousand. I have a diesel engine chipped up to 215 hp. I wanted to get rid of some thoughtfulness, which was obvious after Tiguan. It has become much more fun. The car does not make you regret this choice yet, but this does not mean that there are no problems at all.

Periodically (about once a month) the car does not immediately "see" the key in the pocket. A couple of times in winter, the trunk lock was opened at random while driving. Stopped, closed. Well, well-known to all Freelander owners, the problem of the leakage of the rear brake light: when, after washing, there is a drop of water in the trunk. But it can be easily treated. Consumption in the city reaches 12 liters, in the country 8 liters.

From the obvious (for me) advantages of the car:

1. Landing. It is radically different. Really like. The long journey is easier.

2. A sense of security. Being essentially the same crossover as the Tiguan, there is a much more pronounced sense of security in the car. The oncoming traffic is no longer as scary as it used to be!

3. Winter options in the database. Webasto, heated windshield, heated steering wheel. How happy it is in winter. The car is clearly adapted to Russian realities, taking into account the all-wheel drive and high ground clearance.

4. 480 Nm of torque. Just nice numbers. Especially when they are at your disposal.

Review of the Freelander 2.2D diesel (215 hp) with automatic 2014 onwards

In the used car world, there are many stories of a successor being underestimated because the predecessor was not reliable enough. Land Rover Freelander has experienced all this in full measure.

The first Freelander was created by the British in the era of chaotic BMW driving. Ford took over the second generation. The car was assembled in a new highly automated plant. The ultimate goal of ending the past has been largely achieved.

Against the background of classmates, Land Rover Freelander 2 has an outstanding off-road potential. However, it can hardly be considered an SUV. Rather, it is a respectable family crossover. In accordance with the status of an SUV, the Briton has a self-supporting body, a high mass and is capable of pulling a 2-ton trailer.

Engines

According to mechanics, the Land Rover Freelander is one of the brand's least problematic models. Much credit goes to a good 2.2-liter turbodiesel with 140 hp (TD4) to 190 hp. (SD4). By the way, the engine is the result of the joint work of Ford and Peugeot. Interestingly, despite the different power, up to 190 hp can be extracted from any of them. by changing the software. The cost of chip tuning is from 10 to 20 thousand rubles.

The main drawback of the PSA diesel is premature wear of the camshaft. The disease is typical for models assembled before February 2008, but sometimes it is observed in younger specimens.

Wear on the camshaft of a 2.2-liter turbo diesel on the drive side of the high-pressure fuel pump. The cost of refurbishment will be about 30-35 thousand rubles.

In diesel engines assembled before 2011, there was a risk that the intake manifold swirl flaps would break. An unpleasant surprise could occur after 100-150 thousand km. There are cases when the remains of the valves damaged the valves and the bottom of the piston. After that, the intake manifold was modernized.

In addition, there are intake manifold leaks and diesel particulate filter problems. Oil leaks indicate a clogged crankcase ventilation system. To make matters worse, oil enters the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system and particulate filter and destroys them.

After 150-200 thousand km, a turbocharger and injectors are rented out, and bulkheads may require a starter and a generator. However, there are those who have covered more than 250,000 km without serious problems.

3.2-liter gasoline aspirated R6 with 233 hp. became less widespread than turbodiesel. It is curious that he was "pushed" across. Owners have left rave reviews for the power reserve and ride quality of Volvo's inline-six SUV. Among the advantages of the unit is a chain-type timing drive, with an almost eternal chain. All other engines received a timing belt. Reliability comes at the expense of relatively high fuel consumption.

Since 2012, instead of 3.2 R6, a Ford petrol 2-liter turbo engine with a capacity of 240 hp has been installed. (Si4). There are few similar modifications in the secondary market, and the cars themselves are still young to judge the reliability of new engines. In any case, there are no reports of serious shortcomings yet. Is that the owners complain about the exorbitant appetite for fuel - up to 18-20 liters in the city.

Transmission

All power units were combined with a 6-speed Japanese "automatic" Aisin. The box received mediocre reviews from other brands, but Land Rover services had no problems. The only thing that mechanics pay attention to is the need for regular oil renewals. True, the recommended replacement interval of 240,000 km should be reduced to 60,000 km. To replace, you will need 7 liters of transmission fluid with a total cost of about 6-9 thousand rubles. If you neglect the procedure, then over time, wear products clog the oil channels of the mechatronics. Along the way, it can hook up and the torque converter. A complete overhaul of the automatic transmission will cost 100-150 thousand rubles. Agree, it is cheaper and easier to change the oil in the box every 60,000 km than to repair it.

Interesting fact. The range of the model even contains options with a drive only to the front axle, but they are rare on the market. These are the basic front-wheel drive diesel versions with 150 hp. They were equipped with a Getrag-M66 6-speed manual transmission from Volvo. The M66 is rugged and durable.

Most of the Land Rover Freelander 2 are all-wheel drive. The third-generation Swedish Haldex clutch is responsible for the direct distribution of thrust along the axles. Since July 2008, they began to install the fourth generation clutch. Both systems are reliable, but they require service every 60,000 km (oil and filter changes are required - about 3,000 rubles).

Frequent off-road driving can damage the rear differential bearing. Complex repairs will cost 30,000 rubles.

The all-wheel drive transmission is controlled by the proprietary Terrain Response system. The round switch allows you to select a preset driving mode, which for each specific situation provides the most optimal settings for the operation of the accelerator, automatic transmission and center differential.

Check the condition of the rear propeller shaft mountings before purchasing. This element is not collapsible. The cost of a new cardan joint with supports is about 60,000 rubles.

Undercarriage

The front levers are pretty tough. But when the time comes for replacement, you will have to pay at least 15,000 rubles for the original. Fortunately, analogues are cheaper - from 6,000 rubles. Hub bearings can hum after 150-200 thousand km.

Body and interior

Despite its decent size, there is not enough legroom in the back for adults. But few models will allow you to install three child seats here at once.

In the second generation, the British abandoned the 3-door version of the body, leaving only the 5-door version. The crossover was offered in several trim levels: from the simplest version "E" with air conditioning and fabric upholstery, to the top-end "HSE" with leather, wood inserts and bi-xenon light.

Medium quality finishing materials. This is how the steering wheel looks after a real 140 thousand km. And after a few years, the glazing of the headlights becomes cloudy.

A very large key has the same problems as finishing materials: it loses its presentation extremely quickly.

One of the disadvantages of the Land Rover Freelander is the lack of corrosion protection on the inside of the sills.

The wheel arch seals are made of plastic and aluminum. Over time, they are strongly deformed. The cost of a new seal is about 1000 rubles, plus replacement work.

Among the flaws can be noted and leaks through the additional brake light in the upper part of the tailgate.

Electrician

The only thing the Freelander has not been able to surpass itself is in the reliability of the electrical and electronics. Owners also have to deal with premature battery discharge. Those who rarely travel are especially affected. A noticeable drop in capacity occurs already on the sixth day of inactivity in the summer, and on the third - in the winter. Apparently, electricity is "sucked" by sophisticated electronics.

Sometimes the navigation system stops working. The reason is often trivial. You just need to clean the antenna connector.

Sometimes the door locks fail - they are not unlocked or locked. The lock will cost you 12,000 rubles, and the work will take about an hour.

Conclusion

Many people say they will never buy a Land Rover because the UK brand is the source of the problem. But did the second Freelander 2 remain a purebred Englishman? On closer inspection, more than a dozen “FoMoCo” (Ford Motor Company) symbols can be found on both the engine and suspension. The diesel engine is from France and the gasoline R6 is from Sweden. The clutch is the same from Sweden, and the machine is from Japan. The platform is the same as that of the Ford Kuga and Volvo XC60. It looks like the Land Rover has done a good job of getting Freelander 2 out of the nasty sludge left over from its predecessor. Even with someone else's help. In any case, British SUV mechanics are confident that, in terms of reliability, this is one of the best models of the brand. However, repair and maintenance costs are still high.

Land Rover Freelander is a compact crossover in two generations, serial production of the model started in 1997, its main production was established in Great Britain.

Land Rover Freelander-2 is a second generation SUV, produced from 2006 to 2014. In this article, we will consider the technical characteristics of the car, its cost in the market, and also find out what reviews car owners leave about this car.

Freelander-2

For the first time, a new model of Freelander-2 car was presented at the International Motor Show in Great Britain, but if the name of the car was preserved for Europe, then in North America Freelander began to be sold as LR2 (since 2007). The base of the crossover was the Ford C1 platform, later Volvo cars began to be assembled on it.

Unlike Freelander-1, the second Freelander became safer for the driver, earning 5 stars in the Euro NCAP system. The ground clearance has also been increased, so the cross-country ability of the compact SUV has become better.

In 2010, Freelander-2 underwent a restyling, the main changes were made to the engines. Basically, the modernization was aimed at reducing harmful emissions from the car's exhaust pipe into the atmosphere, as well as saving fuel. But there were also external changes:

  • new taillights were installed;
  • the front bumper has been updated;
  • fog lights have undergone changes;
  • alloy wheels with a different pattern appeared.

The tailgate handle in the restyled version began to be painted in body color, the car itself added a little in width (by 95 millimeters).

Specifications Land Rover Freelander-2

The 2nd generation British SUV was produced in Halwood (England), Jordan and India. The car was equipped with only five types of engines, two of which Freelander was equipped with from 2006 to 2010:

  • turbodiesel TD4 2.2 l co-production Ford
  • 2-liter petrol 6-cylinder Volvo engine.

In 2010, the 2.2 liter diesel engine was upgraded and became available in two versions - TD4 150 (160) horsepower and SD4 190 horsepower. with., and the engine 3.2 Volvo brought to compliance with Euro-5 standards. Since 2012, the crossover has been equipped with a turbocharged gasoline engine 2.0 l Si4 with a capacity of 240 hp. with., this motor replaced the inline "six" 3.2.

Paired with a gasoline engine is only an automatic six-speed gearbox, the diesel can be equipped with a 6-speed. Automatic transmission, and 6-speed. manual transmission. The front suspension of the Freelander is of the McPherson type, the rear is multi-link, ventilated brake discs are installed on the front axle, the rear brakes are also disc, but without ventilation.

Technical characteristics of Land Rover Freelander-2 (restyling) are as follows:

  • length - 4.5 m;
  • height - 1.74 m;
  • width - 2.195 m;
  • wheel track on the front axle - 1.611 m;
  • wheel track on the rear axle - 1.624 m;
  • clearance - 21 cm;
  • minimum turning circle - 11.3 m;
  • full / equipped weight - 2505/1780 kg;
  • steering - with hydraulic booster;
  • trunk volume - 755 liters (with folded seats - 1670 liters);
  • number of seats in the cabin - 5;
  • lifting capacity - 550 kg.

The 2.2 TD4 diesel engine on the second Freelander is distinguished by enviable efficiency, with a sufficiently large mass the car consumes 5.8 liters of fuel per 100 km on the highway, 7.9 liters in the city, and 6.6 liters in mixed mode.

The Land Rover body is made of high quality steel and is highly corrosion resistant.

Owner reviews

According to car owners, the most important advantages of the Freelander-2 crossover are:

But the British car still has disadvantages:

  • Freelander-2 with a 3.2 liter gasoline "six" consumes a lot of fuel;
  • if the car breaks down, repairs are not cheap - original spare parts are expensive;
  • not too big trunk.

Here are some reviews of the Land Rover Freelander 2 crossover.

Vladimir ... The car is 2008, the overall impression of the car is very good - excellent cross-country ability, excellent driving performance. True, I cannot call Friel economical, with a 3.2 gasoline engine fuel consumption can reach 18-20 liters in the city. The rest is happy with everything.

Yuri ... Land Rover 2010, mileage 48 thousand km, diesel 2.2. This is my second SUV, only positive emotions. Economy car - 11-12 liters in the city, on the highway no more than 8. Ergonomics at the level, of the minuses, I note the high prices for parts and service from authorized dealers.

Alexander ... 2008 Freelander, 2.2 liter turbodiesel. The car is comfortable and convenient, but I did not think that it would be less reliable. At -35, the engine does not want to start. Once I was driving through the city, the information “limited power” appeared on the board. The car stopped, I had to call a tow truck. It turned out that there was a short circuit in the injector. After 38 tons. Km, everything repeated again, they say, I fill in bad diesel fuel. Another problem with the windshields, I have already changed two. Maybe it’s just unlucky, others, 150 thousand each, pass without problems.

Michael ... Took a new SUV from OD, 2013, 2.2 TD. Pros - excellent sound insulation, low consumption, there is simply no car equal on the highway. I did not find any flaws, except that the trunk is somewhat small. I will buy the next car, and the choice will be the same.

Vyacheslav ... Freelander 2007, diesel 2.2 l. An excellent car, I especially realized this in winter, on long trips you don't get tired at all. On the road, the car drives steadily, excellent cross-country ability. The diesel is economical and traction, convenient control of the radio on the steering wheel, there is a heated windshield. The protection of the crankcase is not well thought out, dirt when driving off-road is stuffed between the engine and the protection. As a result, the fuel hoses were torn.

Paul ... 2007 car, TD4 turbodiesel. Dashed off 140 tons. Km, I can say that Friel is a balanced car, good both in the city and on the highway. In winter, in severe frosts, antigel was added to the tank, the car started up normally. For all the time there was not a single serious problem, except that the battery charging light came on once - there was a poor contact in the wires. I do not like the small volume of the trunk, the dashboard is not very readable. More expensive service.

In the maximum equipment, the SUV will cost about 2.5 million rubles, and many more cars are sold in the secondary market.

Used Freelander-2 crossovers are offered for sale at an average price of 580 thousand to 1.7 million rubles, depending on the year of car production, configuration and mileage. The most popular engine is the TD4 turbocharged diesel engine, almost all cars are sold with automatic transmission, manual transmissions are rare on the Freelander.

Freelander-2 Maintenance

Although the British SUV is considered a fairly reliable car, without timely maintenance, its components and assemblies will fail ahead of time. On the Internet, you can often find interesting stories about how the car drove more than 300 thousand kilometers without a single major repair. But this is possible only if the maintenance was always carried out on time, and the car was not subjected to merciless exploitation.

For an SUV to serve for a long time, you must:

  • change the engine oil after 10 thousand km;
  • in an automatic transmission after 60 t. km (more often possible);
  • replace fuel and air filters after 25 t. km.

You should also not forget about the timing belt, it is changed after 130 t. Km. The Freelander's suspension is reliable, and before one hundred and fifty thousand kilometers it rarely requires repair, but much depends on the operating conditions.

This year, as you probably know, the seventh episode of "Star Wars" is coming out. I've seen the trailer before, and to my credit, the movie is pretty damn exciting. From the first seconds. A variety of fights, spectacular action, lightsabers, and, of course, signature music. At the same time, it became known that the rights to create new films about the universe were sold to Disney. That is, old George Lucas is no longer in business. Yes, Disney people are, of course, good guys, and their cartoons have practically blurred the border with reality lately, but now I don't want to talk about them. I want to remember everyone's favorite "Episode 4 - A New Hope."

The protagonist Luke Skywalker decides to rescue the captured Princess Leia on the Death Star, a huge space station that can destroy an entire planet in a matter of seconds. To get to the place, he, together with mentor Ben Kenobi, hires Han Solo - a mercenary who flies on an old ship in search of easy money. And then the moment comes when the heroes make their way to the station, free the princess, and begin to escape, the chase begins ...

Before us is an outer space strewn with debris of galactic debris, through which Captain Solo is trying to escape from his pursuers on an old ship called the Millennium Falcon. This ship is clattering with recently replaced parts, equipment is junk, side lights are constantly extinguished, and pursuers in Imperial fighters are pouring fire from laser cannons on the ship. And the only way of salvation for the heroes is hyperjump, which seems to be unlikely for a ship in such a technical state. Princess Leia no longer believed in her salvation, but this old trough, which Han Solo, by the way, won at cards, barely functioning from damage, takes aim, and - drum roll! - crosses several parsecs with a huge leap, saving the lives of the heroes. Awesome scene! Very tense! And now it's time to talk about the Land Rover Freelander 2.

You see, the British have had an unpleasant trail since the late 1990s. They were first bought by BMW, which borrowed several systems from Land Rover for its X5, produced a disgusting third-generation Range Rover, and handed the British over to Ford. The Ford people took it up, they even began to introduce developments and innovations, but then, in the crisis of 2008, they also got rid of Land Rover. I have always sincerely regretted this brand. In the early 2000s, she was like a talented child, born in a village, who was never given the opportunity to reveal herself by her parents. It was as if he had a wonderful ear and composed beautiful melodies, but he went to the boxing section and received cuffs in the evenings, because his father was a mindless donkey who was trying to realize his unfulfilled dreams on his son. But Land Rover engineers managed to do something even in those dark times ...

When you get behind the wheel of the Freelander 2, it feels solid. The buttons are chunky, the landing is high, and the sound of the door slamming resembles the blow of a giant's club on wood - there is a sense of solidity of the whole structure. Soundproofing is, of course, not so-so by premium standards, and yet it is incomparable with plastic bags full of potato peelings, which the same Kia uses for these purposes. Of course, it may seem to you that the finish does not really correspond to the latest fashion trends, and the plastic is too hard to touch. But don't worry, I have already come up with a solution for those who need to feel something while driving until itching: just sit the girl next to it. And the plastic problem will be solved.

And yet we must admit that this car is slightly imperfect. The diesel engine with which it should be taken was supplied here from a Ford Transit. And when the seller tells you that this motor is "time-tested", know that it should be understood as "outdated", because it has been produced since 2000. There is nothing wrong with that, except that it will consume diesel fuel like an Airbus when climbing, and given the complex electronics and the presence of a turbine, I would not advise you to buy fuel from a familiar tractor driver cheaply.

But here's what's interesting. For all its frankly inconspicuous ergonomics, filled with tough plastic and unglamorous buttons, this car remains a terrific car. A real Land Rover. And one of the last. After all, Defender and Discovery 4, consider, have fallen asleep. Only the Evoque and Range Rover will remain, but there is also a problem with them: the first alpha males will be mistaken for a woman's bag, and the second costs at least five, or even all six million, if we are talking about a more or less decent configuration. As long as you save up for it, you will already have a dozen senile diseases. Who knows, maybe that's why the flagship SUV is made so comfortable ... Anyway, you only have the Freelander. A win-win option, I assure you. Let me explain why.

Digging deeper, this is perhaps the most underrated car in the history of undervalued cars. The Trinity of Top Gear rejected him, citing his looks and lack of girly squeak while driving for the first time people took a test drive. Maybe so. However, he has other talents. The second Friel has two rigid subframes - front and rear. It's easy to maintain and as strong as the Great Wall of China, independent long-travel suspension, Terrain Response electronic off-road assistant, permanent all-wheel drive and a proven diesel. And it also doesn't stand like a pair of Faberge eggs, and therefore you can buy it before gray hair begins to stick out of your ears.

Yes, I know there is no escaping the annoying electronics that keep throwing errors. I know that the work of the suspension will be audible even if Vitas and Adele are bawling in the back seat. I also remember about the time-tested diesel engine, about which I have already blabbed. But his "unattractive appearance" ... Here I will argue. I am so convinced of the fallacy of this statement that even if a billion designers throw a glove in my face, I will fight each of them in a duel, defending their reputation. Of course, the Evoque is beautiful. And your wife, for sure, would like to have seven of these cars in different colors - one for each day of the week. But let's be honest: now almost everyone uses a sugary pattern. From Kia in their Sportage to Land Rover itself with its new Discovery Sport. And Friel is not what a bunch of marketers saw him as. He is what the designer made him. Simple, concise, and very brutal. And while he may not technically impress on paper, take my word for it, he can play tough. Whoever has figured out the idea of this car will no longer sell it. Because for all his shortcomings, he is a real fighter, and he will not give in to difficulties. With a reasonable approach, this machine will get you out of trouble in a situation when there is simply nowhere to go for the tractor, and there is only hope for yourself. And when you ride on asphalt, it will instill a sense of confidence and security.

And that brings me back to the Millennium Falcon, the ship that Captain Solo flew in Star Wars. His equipment thundered, he was not endowed with ostentatious gloss and, we admit, in some places it could be constructively better. But he had character, idea and strength. So which would you choose: an Imperial fighter jet piloted by a clone, or a Millennium Falcon with Captain Solo at the helm?

Verdict: One of the latest true SUVs from Land Rover.

Select and service a used Land Rover Freelander 2

And now about the choice of the car itself. The second Freelander was produced from 2006 to 2014 inclusive. Therefore, the choice of a car on the secondary market is quite impressive. As well as the range of prices: from 600 thousand rubles. for cars of the first years of production up to 2.5 million for a car in the maximum configuration with near-zero mileage. However, the price for them is slightly overestimated by the dealers. A smart choice against this background seems to be a car aged three to four years. Moreover, it is with a 2.2-liter base turbodiesel. Let me explain why.

Freelander's manufacturer's warranty is 3 years or 100,000 km. It follows from this that when purchasing a three-year period, you, as a rule, receive a copy with a transparent service history. In a sense, this will give you confidence in the future. Such a car can be found on electronic sites without going beyond the psychological barrier of a million rubles. Among engines, the 150-horsepower turbodiesel has become very popular. In fact, this is the same unit as the 190-horsepower version (even the torque of 420 Nm is the same). Of the differences - software firmware and turbine cooling (on a more powerful one, it is carried out with oil and antifreeze against only oil in the 150 hp version). And, of course, in the tax - 3 thousand against 9.5 thousand rubles. in year. As they say, the choice is obvious.

There are three basic configurations: S, SE and HSE. As well as engines: two diesels with a volume of 2.2 liters (150 and 190 hp) and a gasoline (2.0 l, 240 hp). The complete sets differ in upholstery (leather, suede, fabric), equipment and exterior. Two types of transmission - six-speed "mechanics" and "automatic" with the function of manual switching ComandShift. Due to efficiency (in comparison with a gasoline engine) and greater traction, diesel versions with “automatic” are more common. Let's talk about them.

The choice of a car in this design seems more logical against the background of today's fuel prices. You might be confused by the thought of the upcoming DPF torment. But don't worry - he's not here. Freelander 2 passes the Euro-standard with the help of a catalyst. When it comes to problems, it's worth remembering the old truth about the stingy who pays twice. The motor and gearbox themselves are quite resource-intensive. Specialized forums are full of stories of caring owners of cars who have traveled more than 300 thousand km without major repairs of the main units. To avoid problems, it is better not to limit yourself to a standard oil change every 13 thousand km. The fuel filter should be changed every 25 thousand km (5 thousand rubles), and the oil in the automatic transmission (10 thousand rubles) every 60 thousand km, or even 50 thousand km if you like to go out into nature more often than others. Often, problems with the "scorched" transmission lead to the replacement of the entire unit, and they are caused, as a rule, by the old oil in the box and the hope for a Russian maybe.

At 130 thousand, it will be time to change the timing belt, and, of course, the rollers. The spare parts themselves cost about 5 thousand rubles, the work is paid depending on the efforts made to call the services. You can keep within 8 thousand. Also, when replacing the belt, it is recommended to change the oil in the transfer case, which distributes traction to the rear axle. It has its own body separate from the "automatic" box, and the oil here changes along with the timing belt. The procedure will cost 7 thousand rubles.

As for the suspension, in general, the owners mark it as reliable. It is a rare case that up to 150 thousand km someone changed the shock absorbers. Usually, the matter is limited to replacing the stabilizer struts (one thousand rubles each) and stabilizer bushings (750 rubles each). When the time comes, be prepared to spend on the front shock absorbers: 9 thousand rubles. apiece from the officials or 6 thousand for a couple of the same manufacturer in the online store. When approaching a mileage of 170-180 thousand km, there will be a need to replace the front silent blocks and the ball. Many also change the front levers assembly (11 thousand rubles / piece for the original and from 6500 rubles / piece for analogues).

Of course, you shouldn't forget about the brakes. A set of front pads costs 4 thousand rubles on average. (the officials will take twice as much), 3 thousand will have to pay for the rear. The official dealer is not so generous in this regard.

Occasionally there are troubles, the solution of which verges on stupidity. The problem is probably the lack of attention of servicemen to some details. For example, the hose leading from the intercooler to the throttle valve may burst, which will provoke a hum from the engine compartment when accelerating. It is interesting that in the auto center they will take 9 thousand rubles for the diagnosis and elimination of this trouble. But if you notice an air leak yourself, then you will need a piece of hose for 100 rubles and half an hour of free time.
