Last week I got my hands on the key to a BMW X6, which was kindly provided to me by the Avtodom company.

The matter was as follows. At the moment I have already moved to a new place of residence. But at that moment, I was left without my car (I handed over my bumper for painting under insurance), and I urgently needed a car to move.

I called Motorhome and asked for a roomy car to test.
They kindly “chartered” a BMW X5 for me, but upon arrival it turned out that the X5 had already flown away and they gave me a BMW X6!

So, the route is laid along one of the best roads in Russia, Novorizhskoye Highway. Distance 140 km one way.

I leave at 7 am. While there are few cars and debris on the road, you can enjoy the dynamics of the car.

The car makes it possible to drive very fast! Surprisingly, comfort and speed complement each other so well that you don’t notice how fast you’re going! One moment and the speedometer already shows 160 km/h!

Today we will compare the BMW class x5 and x6 series, respectively. I’ll say right away that the average driver who is looking for something light and family friendly shouldn’t read any further.

Which of these two cars should you choose? This question is not so difficult, especially if you are choosing between these two cars. Yes, I have heard many times that the x6 will be more expensive and a little faster in terms of speed, but in general these are exactly the same models. Do you know what I'll tell you? In principle, it is so, but on the manufacturer’s website you can say that everything is just embellished a little.

BMW x6 was released in 2008, while the cycle BMW x5 began to come to an end already in 2006, i.e. After more than 2 years, BMW introduces a new model, although in 2014 BMW planned to repeat the x5 model cycle.

BMW x6- this is the name of the model that went on sale in 2008, although, despite the Global Financial Crisis in these years, car sales exceeded all expectations placed on it and the crisis bypassed this model, which made it possible to bring considerable profit to BMW.

In general terms, the car repeats design x5 and only here and there there are some differences from the previous car model. A completely different designer worked on this car, but it seems to me that he wanted cars of this class to have something in common in terms of design.

Overall characteristics of cars They are almost the same from each other, so I won’t describe everything in detail here; if you need to, you can go to the manufacturer’s website or go to the corresponding sites and compare these models according to all characteristics.

The price of this model is not very different from that on x5 and it will be about 300,000 rubles more expensive, which, in my opinion, is very, very acceptable, although it’s up to anyone, I won’t argue here.

Any car, no matter how reliable it is, sooner or later has to be repaired. Each car has its own resource. Well, now let’s actually come to the question - “what to choose?”, But first, a preface. As you understand, I didn’t write a bunch of information about the BMW x5 here; I didn’t write anything about it at all, because... I can confidently believe that if you are reading this article at the moment, then you already have some (at least “basic”) information about the BMW x5 with you.

Well, we move on to the agony of choice. What to choose? Do you know what I will tell you? If I had a car and it was a BMW x5, then I would not change it to x6 model. You can call me crazy, accusing me of the fact that the x5 model’s cycle has simply passed and it’s time to adapt to, so to speak, “new technologies.”

First of all, what is important to me is not the design, but the quality of the model itself and its functionality. Yes, you say, both models have quality, but the x6 will have more functionality. I won’t really answer you, not really. The fact is that, as I wrote earlier, there are not many differences between these models, and if we talk about functionality in general, then the situation here is almost different.

In fact, in x6, compared to x5, the functionality has not increased so much to some “extraordinary heights”, and therefore I lead everything to the fact that if I owned the x5 model, I would not change it to x6 . As I already said, everything I write is my opinion and therefore, the choice, of course, is always yours. If you haven’t had any car with you before, but have plenty of money or just some extra bills, then the BMW x6 will be an excellent purchase for you, don’t ask why. Simply - buy it. X6 VS X5

There is slight confusion among the Bavarian company's clients - in addition to the successfully selling BMW X5 model, an equally interesting X6 version has appeared. Both clients and the sellers themselves don’t know what to do with this variety now, in whose showrooms there are no “live” cars yet, and at this time the buyer is literally pouring out questions - so what’s the difference?

The analytical staff of Avtogazeta also worked in this direction. And it’s effective. At least some of the features of both Xs became clear from the very beginning.

At first glance, the X5 already has a well-established image among its competitors. This modern crossover with a sporty character once skimmed the cream of the crop among SAV class buyers. Even 8 years after the launch of a new class for the Bavarian company, the first cars produced are holding up well in price. Now, according to many BMW crossover buyers, there is a clear alternative to the classic X5 shape in the form of the X6's closest relative. Has competition emerged within the BMW model range? The answer is quite complicated. When you start comparing the appearance, there doesn’t seem to be much difference in the cars. The same base, the same interior decoration and equipment. But once you look into the technical parameters, you immediately discover the same difference in values. The height of the cars differs by a good 7 centimeters in favor of the X5, but the X6 is 2 centimeters longer with the same wheelbase. Reducing the body height stole space in the cabin from the X-Six. If in the front part of the cabin 2 centimeters were lost in height from the seat cushion to the ceiling, then for the rear passengers the roof sloping back took away about 5 centimeters. In addition, the X6 has only 2 seats in the back, separated by a central armrest with built-in glove compartments. This is the philosophy of the first off-road coupe. Accordingly, the rear wheel track of the X6 was wider to add sportiness to the modified chassis.

The range of gasoline engines in the X6 looks even more interesting when compared with the X5 engines. For its off-road coupe, BMW offered the latest turbocharged units with a volume of 3.0 and 4.4 liters, producing 306 and 408 hp, respectively, while the X5 is still content with a not very economical and far from the most powerful inline 3-liter “six” and an updated 4.8-liter V8. Both engines are good in their own way, but they no longer fit into the framework of the modern concept of environmental standards. The same as in the ideas of many car owners about the efficiency of Bavarian engines. But such discrimination in terms of power in the X5 group is so far only observed among gasoline versions sold in Europe and the USA. The diesel program in both cases is the same, with the only caveat that you buy the European version of both “X”s for the unattractive euro currency. Although in the fall dieselization will also affect the “USA” versions.

Among the X6's trump cards is the latest DPC Dynamic Performance Control differential, capable of distributing torque between the sides of the rear axle. With such a mechanism, the car is more willing to take turns, which is no small matter for BMW owners. Of course, you can’t bypass the laws of physics with the DPC system, but the X6 has its own charm in controlling it. The sportiness of the off-road coupe is added by a lower center of gravity, a wider wheel track and very efficient engines. If you look at some technical data, you will notice that the xDrive 35i version with a 3-liter turbo engine accelerates to “hundreds” in just 6.5 seconds, which corresponds to the acceleration dynamics of the BMW X5 4.8i.

But these are the immediate calculations of marketers. First, warm up the X6 version with the new technical filling, and then add some sparkle to the classic version of the X5 crossover.

If you think about it soberly, then “X-5” looks more functional for everyday use. The newest X6 model, having not yet appeared, made a claim not just for individuality, but also for the status of the owner, who does not feel remorse because of the sporty design of the sloping rear line of the body. Most likely, the owner of an X6 will more often drive around with a small crew or in splendid isolation, while the owner of an X5 will think about his loved ones and a possible trip by car before purchasing. The main thing is that both can be owners of modern and equally good cars of a respected brand. And the choice is a matter of taste.

Despite the high cost and the need to wait for your turn to buy for a month or more, the bulk of sales today fall on new cars, and all because many potential buyers of used BMW X6 are afraid of possible expensive breakdowns. Today we will try to either confirm that buying this used car will cost quite a penny over time, or dispel this myth.

A little history:

The BMW X6 was first presented in 2008 at the Detroit auto show. The car became the pioneer of a new class of premium crossovers in a coupe body - “Sports Activity Coupe”. In 2009, at the New York Auto Show, a charged version of the new product was shown, which was designated by the “M” index; in the same year, but already at the Frankfurt auto show, another production modification of the “Active Hybrid” model was presented. At the end of 2011, as part of the modernization of its model range, the company restyled all versions of the crossover. In the first three years of sales of this car, the German concern sold more than 150,000 copies.

Problem areas of used BMW X6

There are no complaints about the quality of the paintwork and the corrosion resistance of the body, but still, some elements of the body require attention. So, in particular, you need to carefully monitor the condition of the drainage system located near the windshield. The fact is that if it gets clogged, there is a high probability that the main control unit of the car will flood with water. The trapezium of the wipers is not famous for its quality; over time, it begins to creak; to solve the problem, the trapezoid should be replaced. There are also complaints about the reliability of the power steering reservoir (it cracks) and the hose for supplying washer fluid to the glass of the trunk door (fluid leaks appear). And if the first drawback can be eliminated quickly and inexpensively, then to eliminate the second you will have to pay about 500 USD. (it is necessary to disassemble almost the entire interior).

Engines

The BMW X6 is equipped with the following power units - petrol 3.0 (306 hp), 4.4 (407 and 450 hp); diesel 3.0 (from 230 to 381 hp), and hybrid 4.4 (407 hp). Depending on how the engine and turbocharging control system is configured, each power unit has its own index - 30, 35, 40, 50 and M50. Operating experience has shown that the best option for purchasing would be a car with a diesel engine. This type of engine has a fairly long service life and rarely causes complaints from owners, so buying a diesel BMW X6, even with a mileage of under 200,000 km, is not always a death sentence. Often during this mileage, owners are faced with their first investment in a power unit, usually this is replacing glow plugs. But only on the condition that the car was not refueled at a gas station with a dubious reputation.

The 3.0 engine is considered the most reliable among gasoline versions. Its weakest point is considered to be the injection system (the high-pressure pump and injectors fail). The 4.4 engine was awarded the title “Engine of the Year” in Germany in 2008, but it is completely unsuitable for our operating conditions. The fact is that the engine is very thermally loaded, and the oil channels tend to coke quickly (black oily deposits form in all channels), as a result, the turbine experiences not only a large load (heats up to 700 °C), but also oil starvation, which leads to to its rapid wear. For the same reason, by 120,000 km the connecting rod bearings rotate and the rings become stuck, which ultimately leads to oil consumption of up to 1 liter per 1000 km. On most of these engines, up to 150,000 km, capital is required, the cost of which is equal to the cost of a good used foreign car (in an unofficial service they will ask about 6,000 USD for repairs). If you want to purchase a new engine, you will have to pay about 20,000 USD for it.

All power units do not have an oil dipstick, so you will not be able to check the oil level and condition yourself. You also need to know that vehicle maintenance is not carried out based on mileage or time, like most cars. The BMW X6 is equipped with a system that independently monitors when maintenance is required and notifies about this with an inscription on the instrument panel. But given our operating conditions, this system notifies very rarely (once every 20-25 thousand km). For Europe, such intervals are considered the norm, but not here. Considering the quality of fuels and lubricants, this can lead to disastrous consequences. Therefore, in order not to experiment, most servicemen recommend not waiting for a notification from the system and servicing the car at least once every 10,000 km.

On cars of the first years of production, there is a common problem with piezo injectors (the cost of one fluctuates around $200). The main problem is that if even one injector fails, you will be strongly recommended to change the entire set. All engines are very afraid of overheating, and due to the lack of an engine temperature sensor on the dashboard, it is impossible to monitor its temperature. Therefore, you need to wash the cooling radiator at least twice a year.

Transmission

Officially, the BMW X6 comes only with a six- and eight-speed automatic transmission; there is also a manual transmission, but it is only available on European versions. Opinions vary greatly about the reliability of an automatic transmission, and the point here is not that some are lucky and others are not, but the power of the engine and the more powerful it is, the sooner the box will need to be repaired. For example, with the most powerful 4.4 engine, the box rarely lasts more than 100,000 km. On diesel cars, problems with the gearbox are less common, and if you do not neglect service intervals (oil and filter changes every 80,000 km), it will last up to 300,000 km. The main problems of automatic transmissions are failure of the mechatronics, wear of the bushings inside the box, and by 60,000 km the box pan and the bushing to which the electrical connector is connected begin to leak.

Reliability of BMW X6 chassis

The BMW X6 is equipped with an independent multi-link suspension at the front and rear. In the top configuration, the car is equipped with the X-Drive system with active steering and an active rear differential. This combination gives incredible control over the vehicle's handling, which will be the envy of even many sports coupe owners. But this configuration also has its drawbacks - the high cost of repairs. Before buying a used car, be sure to check the tightness of the differential, the fact is that in most cases oil leaks through its drive. The main sign of a problem will be oil drips on the rear gearbox. Also pay attention to the condition of the active stabilizers. If the previous owner did not drive carefully, then they will have oily streaks (the cost of one original stabilizer ranges from 800-1000 USD).

The active stabilizers and power steering are powered by one pump, and in order to avoid having to change it during early runs, it is necessary to monitor the level and condition of the power steering fluid. If we talk about the service life of suspension consumables, then most often the stabilizer struts fail (on average, once every 30-40 thousand km). On average, wishbones will last 60-70 thousand km; at the same mileage, steering rods may need to be replaced. The silent parts of the trailing arms and ball joints will last 80-90 thousand km. Shock absorbers, support and wheel bearings last up to 150,000 km. Brake pads last on average 30-35 thousand km, discs up to 70,000 km.

The interior of the BMW X6 is made of very high quality and wear-resistant materials that retain good presentation even after 200,000 km. The only interior element by which the approximate mileage can be determined is the stop/start button, which begins to wear off at 150,000 km, and at 200,000 km there are practically no inscriptions on it. There are no particular complaints about sound insulation. I would also like to note the reliability of electrical equipment, of which there is quite a large amount. Among the shortcomings in electronics, one can note only the unreliability of the interior climate control system.

Result:

Despite the fact that the BMW X6 is considered to be an unreliable car, it must be admitted that this car is quite reliable, and most of the problems that owners encounter are the result of improper maintenance and operation. But it is worth recognizing that the car has a number of minor shortcomings, which require significant investment to eliminate. The best option would be a car with a diesel engine and low mileage (up to 100,000 km) or a history that is well known to you.

BMW X6 specifications

The front end of the BMW X6, while similar to the X5, is slightly modified. Thanks to large air intakes and a wide double radiator grille, it looks more aggressive and hints at the possibility of gambling. There are no changes inside the cabin: the same leather as the BMW X5, the same comfortable seats, the same electronics. Even the standard two-zone climate control system remains, although if the client wishes, the car can be equipped with a four-zone system. It must be said that comparing the BMW X6 with the fifth model in terms of interior capacity is clearly not in favor of the six. This is due to its sloping roof, which creates some inconvenience for rear passengers. Even inside the cabin of the second generation X6 released in 2016, which is slightly larger in size, there is still a feeling of some crampedness. It seems that the developers simply forgot about the comfort of passengers in the rear seats. By the way, the trunk of the X6 is also smaller.

As for technical characteristics and driving performance, it should be noted that the BMW X6 is more exciting, tougher and more dynamic. Active steering, adaptive suspension and the intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive system allow the car to be stable and controllable even at extreme speeds. BMW X6 engineers managed to combine almost incompatible things: a fairly high seating position with excellent handling.

There is no point in talking about the price of cars. It all depends on the configuration of a particular model. However, overall, with the high price of both cars, the BMW X6 outperforms the X5.

As a conclusion, we can conclude that the cars being compared are true works of the German automobile industry, so the purchase of any of them will be an expression of respectability, luxury and good taste of the buyer. At the same time, a comparison of the BMW X5 with the X6 showed that the sixth model is suitable for lovers of stylish cars who love excitement, speed, and drive in driving, and the X5 is for more practical people who prefer reliability and stability.
