A car called Lada Kalina Cross was officially presented in the fall of 2014 at the Moscow Motor Show. The car received the following dimensions: 4048/1700/1562. In this case, the height is indicated taking into account the rails. The wheelbase of Kalina Cross is 2476 mm. Due to the fact that the tires have become wider, the wheel track has also increased by 4 mm. The designers had to reduce the steering rack travel by the same figure. It can be seen that Togliatti designers tried to make the car more modern and interesting. Another standout detail at the front is the large air intake diffuser. It is divided into two parts by a bumper strip with a license plate. It is the large diffuser that reminds of the car's belonging to the crossover family. Fog lights are located on the sides of a powerful bumper on black plastic inserts.

The engine and gearbox are protected from damage by a thick mechanical lining on the bottom. And bumpers, sills and wheel arches are protected by overlays made of strong black plastic. All this indicates that Kalina Cross is ready to conquer light off-road. There are black moldings on the doors, and rather massive roof rails on the roof. The aft part is distinguished by a massive and large tailgate. In general, the Lada-Kalina Cross, whose characteristics speak for themselves, gives the impression of a medium-sized crossover.

Interior

The interior decoration of our hero is completely copied from the usual "Kalina". All the same rough plastic and gray tones. However, in order to somehow dilute the dull look of the cabin, the designers decided to add orange inserts to it. Orange can be seen on the seat cushions, door trim cards, around and under the steering wheel spokes. Such a contrast improves mood and for some time even allows you to forget about the dullness of the cabin.

The vehicle equipment includes: heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors, electric power steering, steering wheel height adjustment, headrests for the rear row, an audio system with an input for CD and USB media, ABS and BAS systems, front airbags, an alarm system and central locking with remote control function.

The cabin can normally accommodate five adults of average build. Noise isolation in this model is slightly better than in previous versions.

The trunk of Lada, which we will consider below, has a volume of only 355 liters. If you fold the rear seats, it increases to 670 liters. But for fastening large and fragile goods, special brackets are provided.

The main reason why the status of a real crossover for Kalina-Cross remains only a utopia so far is the lack of all-wheel drive. Yes, not all crossovers have it. In fact, this car is nothing more than a raised "Kalina" station wagon, but this is not the main thing. The car is quite comfortable and spacious, so it is chosen by large families. Spare parts for it are quite inexpensive, which means that it can be operated in full. In addition, thanks to short overhangs, body protection and increased ground clearance, Kalina is not an obstacle to both the curb in the parking lot and light off-road outside the city. The assembly of the first generation Kalina was carried out until the spring of 2013, the car was produced in hatchback, sedan and station wagon bodies.

In May of the same 2013, a new project Lada Kalina 2 was launched into the series, but this model has already begun to be produced in only two body styles - station wagon and hatchback.

The Kalina Cross modification appeared in 2014, and although it is based on the Universal, it has a number of significant differences.

What is the difference between Lada Kalina Cross and station wagon

The most important question: how is the Cross model different from the station wagon, and can it be all-wheel drive?

Kalina Cross is a front-wheel drive car, but with a slightly increased cross-country ability, improved technical characteristics.

Compared to the station wagon, the ground clearance of the Lada Cross is increased by 2.3 centimeters, and is 208 mm (without load). With a body length of 4.104 m, the wheelbase of Kalina is 2476 mm, the height of the car is 1.7 m.

According to car owners, Kalina Cross has many advantages, but there are also disadvantages.

The advantages of this model:

• high ground clearance allows you to operate the car on country roads;

• there are no problems with spare parts - there is no headache, where to buy parts, spare parts are inexpensive;
• pleases the price-quality ratio, according to car owners, Lada is worth the money;
• serious breakdowns are extremely rare, only minor flaws are noted;
• the interior is quite spacious, despite the fact that Kalina looks like a small car from the outside;
• the trunk of the car is voluminous, and with the rear seats unfolded, it can accommodate many useful things on a long journey.

Although it’s not too quiet when driving in a car, the sound insulation on the Lada Cross still got better, and there were also fewer crickets in the cabin.

With ICE 106 l. from. there are no complaints about the dynamics, but the 87-horsepower engine is rather weak, its power is not enough on the track.

The suspension is stiff enough, but it's even good - the car does not heel when cornering, it drives confidently along the highway.

Cons of Kalina Cross:

• the gearbox howls noticeably, moreover, this drawback is noted by many car owners, by the way, this is also typical for;
• at certain speeds, the gearshift lever starts to rattle (on a car with a manual transmission);
• the word Cross in the model name is not very appropriate - this car cannot be called a crossover, since the cross-country ability is not good enough, and the clearance is actually less than that specified by the manufacturer;
• salon plastic oak, high quality does not differ;
• instead of a full-fledged R15 spare wheel, the car is equipped with a 14th radius dokatka on a stamped rim.

In general, all the shortcomings are small, some shortcomings can be corrected, but you can ignore something, for example, the howling of the checkpoint.

Despite the noise of the gearbox, the transmission does not fail, and the noise does not affect the working stroke.

It should be borne in mind here that Lada Cross belongs to the budget class, so minor flaws in a VAZ car can be forgiven.

What is the updated model? For the sake of justice, it should be noted that outwardly the car completely repeats its prototype - with the only difference that the clearance of the new model has increased. It is 208 mm on an unladen car with a driver, which, compared with similar models, is a rather impressive result. When loading the car, the clearance decreases to 188 mm, which also cannot but please fans of off-road driving. If we compare the clearance with, then Cross has an additional margin of 23 mm. It should be noted that Togliatti engineers managed to win additional millimeters of ground clearance through the use of gas-filled shock absorbers. They also changed the location of the spring supports, reconfigured individual suspension elements. The car received 15-inch wheels with a width of 195 mm, which made it possible to increase the track, and reduce the steering rack travel by about 3.5 mm.

Of the other differences that are on Kalina Cross, it should be noted the presence of engine crankcase protection already in the "norm" configuration, the presence of eye-catching, wide moldings on the doors. Thresholds added plastic lining. The rear and front bumpers are metallized inserts that stand out from the general background and give the car a more off-road look.

Here it should be said that in terms of interior design and instrument configuration, the new Kalina Cross fully repeats the station wagon, with the exception of the only difference - the color of the finish. Of course, the 1.6 liter engine is quite modest in speed characteristics, the car picks up a hundred in 12 seconds. But the main trump card of our ward is not speed, but good cross-country ability. And, it would seem, the Lada Kalina Cross 4x4 version would be logical, but, unfortunately, the equipment is limited only to the front-wheel drive version. Apparently, the developers decided that the car is more intended for the city, where the main obstacle is high curbs and not very high-quality roads. Full-fledged off-road, after all, is not her element.

In the basic configuration, the car will have two airbags for front passengers, central locking, electric power steering, adjustable steering column, ABS, climate control, electric heating of the driver's and front passenger's seats, electric front door windows.

The preliminary price of Lada Kalina Cross 2016 in a new body (pictured) in a configuration that bears the abbreviation "norm" is 409 thousand rubles. The advantages of the car include: a rich "stuffing", high ground clearance, a very competitive price among cars of this class. The main external difference between "Kalina Cross" and the "ordinary station wagon" is the clearance up to 180 mm (we can say that this is the "average ground clearance for crossovers" today).

A similar “growth” was achieved by installing 15-inch wheels with 195/55 tires (+7 mm) and reconfiguring the suspension (+16 mm).

That is, in terms of overall dimensions, the "Cross" has become slightly higher than the "ordinary station wagon" (length / width / height): 4084/1700/1564 mm.

In addition, this modification received: a plastic protective body kit, slightly modified bumpers and a radiator grille, enlarged moldings and factory underbody protection.

Small, but catchy changes have occurred in the interior of the car. Lada Kalina Cross received several design options with bright (yellow or orange) inserts on the front and door panels, as well as the steering wheel.

In addition, a part of the upholstery of the seats is framed in the color of the inserts. Also, according to the manufacturer, Cross-Kalina was provided with better sound insulation.

The volume of the luggage compartment is 355 liters, with the rear seats folded down - 670 liters.

  Note that the gearbox received a different gear ratio of the main pair - 3.9 instead of 3.7. The expected fuel consumption of new items in the combined cycle should not exceed 7 liters.
• The already well-known 1.6-liter, but 16-valve engine with 106 hp became the eldest. But for him, in addition to the “mechanics” described above, a new “AvtoVAZ robot” is proposed as an alternative transmission.

The suspension of the “off-road Kalina” was inherited from the “ordinary car”, but at the same time it received improvements: different shock absorber settings, new strut mounts, reinforced silent blocks and other front springs.

The steering has also been changed. Due to the increase in the dimensions of the wheels, the engineers had to reduce the steering rack travel, so that the turning radius of the "cross version" increased from 5.2 meters to 5.5 meters.

By default, this “pseudo-crossover” received front-wheel drive, but AvtoVAZ does not exclude the appearance of a modification of the “Lada Kalina Cross 4x4” (let's just say that there is a very illusory hope that in the future this new product will acquire an all-wheel drive system for “top” configurations).

Options and prices. In the Russian market, Lada Kalina Cross, according to data for 2018, is sold in three equipment options - Classic, Comfort and Luxe.

A car in the basic configuration with an 87-horsepower engine costs a minimum of 535,800 rubles, and its signs are: one airbag, ABS, EBD, BAS, 15-inch alloy wheels, an on-board computer, electric power steering, heated front seats, two electric windows, electric drive and heated mirrors, climate control, a four-speaker audio system and some other equipment.

A station wagon with a 106-horsepower unit (it is provided with the “Comfort” version) will cost from 552,700 rubles, a “robotic” modification is offered at a price of 580,700 rubles, and the “top” version cannot be bought cheaper than 578,600 rubles.

The most “packaged” model also boasts: two airbags, fog lights, rear power windows, heated windshield, light and rain sensors, rear parking sensors and other modern “chips”.
