Range Rover Velar is an attractive premium. If your name is Range Rover: test drive Range Rover Velar New Range Rover Velar test drive

Land Rover has launched a new SUV called the Range Rover Velar in its lineup. In the lineup, he took a place between the Evoque and Discovery Sport cars. The official display of the novelty took place in the spring of this year at a special event in the capital of Great Britain. The start of crossover sales in Russia was organized in October 2017. The price of the Range Rover Vilar in the basic version starts at 3,880,000 rubles.

The new Range Rover Velar 2017-2018 model year is built on the PLA D7 platform, made of aluminum. A similar “trolley” underlies the Jaguar F-Pace and Range Rover Sport. Normally, the car is equipped with a drive on both axles; a special system is also used that uses the wheels of the front axle through a multi-plate clutch. Ground clearance Range Rover Vilar reaches 213 mm (with conventional spring suspension). Thanks to this, the crossover can overcome a 60-centimeter ford. The list of options includes air suspension, which allows you to adjust the ground clearance from 205 to 251 mm. It also increases off-road capabilities - you can cross a ford already 65 cm deep.

Stunning looks and dimensions

The magnificent exterior design is one of the “chips” of the British novelty. Although the exterior is designed in a minimalist style, it deserves your attention. The exterior features are the original false radiator grille, front lighting with exclusive daytime running lights, fog optics with LED filling, slots on the hood, as well as rims with a diameter of 18 to 21 inches (you can also place a special order for “rollers” with a dimension of 22”).

External door handles are made retractable, there is a special LED backlight. The rear of the body also looks very stylish: 3D LED optics, stylish foglights, a massive bumper and trapezoidal exhaust pipes.

Dimensions Range Rover Velar (Range Rover Vilar) 2017-2018:

  • length - 4 803 mm;
  • width - 1,930 mm;
  • height - 1 665 mm;
  • the distance between the axles is 2,874 mm.

The body of the new SUV with British roots can be painted in 13 different shades, so buyers will have plenty to choose from.

The front drag of the crossover body is 0.32 Cx, and this is the best coefficient among all representatives of the Range Rover line. The developers were able to achieve this indicator thanks to the almost perfectly flat bottom, the design of the door handles (they hide when the car speed exceeds 8 km / h), as well as the smooth outlines of the body elements. According to the developers, the thoughtful design of the spoiler ensures the cleanliness of the glass of the fifth door, as water and dirt are simply blown away by a powerful air stream.

Interior design and its technical stuffing

At first glance, the interior of the Range Rover Vilar may seem a little rustic. But a detailed examination helps to understand how erroneous the first opinion can be. In the interior you can see a huge number of the latest developments. In fact, there are practically no analog controls inside the British SUV. All kinds of electronic systems are controlled using touch displays and panels.

A multifunctional steering wheel is installed in front of the driver, on which touch panels are also used. The instrument panel is virtual, it has a 12.3-inch color display. But the base version uses the more familiar analog instrument cluster with a 5.0-inch trip computer screen. There is also a projection screen in the car, which displays data on the windshield.

The center console consists of a pair of touch screen displays with a diagonal of 10 inches, and the angle of the top can change. It is designed to control the infotainment system. And the one that is installed below is responsible for the operation of climate control (four zones). It is also designed to control various off-road modes of the Range Rover Velar. The crossover is equipped with a premium sound system with 17 or 23 speakers. There is also a multi-colored LED backlight.

The front seats received high-quality lateral support, a thoughtful profile, as well as electrical adjustments, heating, massage and ventilation systems (the latter are offered as an option). The rear row is also not deprived of attention - ventilation deflectors, heating and ports for connecting mobile devices are available.

The trim of the Range Rover Velar 2017-2018 is made of expensive leather and high-quality fabric. Note the use of metal decorative elements. Trunk volume Range Rover Velar reaches 558 liters, the cargo compartment door is equipped with an electric drive. If you fold the rear row (ratio - 40/20/40), the volume of the cargo compartment will already be 1731 liters. A set of tools and a spare wheel are hidden under the raised boot floor.

The SUV is equipped with a large number of the latest security systems:

  • automatic emergency braking system;
  • lane departure warning system;
  • rear parking sensors;
  • cruise control with speed limit;
  • assistance system when reversing with a trailer;
  • system of adaptation to conditions on the road;
  • slope control system;
  • function of easy start on slippery surfaces, etc.

The answer is extremely simple: this car, unlike sky-high supercars, is of real practical interest to the wealthy public. Land Rover gracefully and decisively plugged their own created, but hitherto empty marketing niche of the “urban Range Rover”.

Many times in interviews and presentations, I asked Land Rover bosses: do all your clients really need all these opportunities to storm almost meter fords, climb rocks at an angle of 45 degrees and do other hardcore? They answered me: yes, we understand that few people use the capabilities of our machines even by half, but it is important for people to have potential.

Velar- for those for whom this potential is much less important than the monumentality of the appearance and the luxury of the interior. This is a crossover Range Rover. Also with a good discount compared to the flagship!

Technically, it's not even really a Land Rover - it's Jaguar F-Pace in a new guise. Based on the same platform iQ, the same wheelbase of 2,874 mm, the same suspension designs (two-link front, multi-link rear) and ... yes, a simplified all-wheel drive transmission without a reduction gear.

Visually Velar it seems very large, and it is really longer than the Jaguar (due to overhangs) by 7 centimeters, but shorter Range Rover Sport by 4.7 centimeters. Logically, the “cubic” Velar should be inferior in terms of aerodynamic properties f-pace, but in fact its Cx is 0.32 versus 0.34 for the co-platformer.

In favor of Cx, the door handles, made in a compartment-style “flush”, are played, which are put forward, apparently, when the car is unlocked with a key. And also, do not believe it, British engineers adopted the know-how, which was very popular in the 90s among the owners of the "chisel". Velar does not have a rear wiper - the air flow passing through the spoiler should blow off water and dirt at speed. That does not detract from the merits of this amazing car.

What's in the photos, what's live Velar is damn similar to the concept-car: with bold chopped lines, giant wheels... But in the cabin it’s already really comfortable, this doesn’t happen in concepts. And this, forgive me flagship range, the most luxurious Land Rover I've ever sat in.

Let's say that now you won't surprise anyone with expensive leather - at least completely tighten everything in skins and paint it in the most bizarre colors. The British went further in experiments with texture. Denim, corrugated polymer upholstery, rough wood ... The steering wheel can even be suede!

Men, beware! If your woman inadvertently sits here in the showroom and feels all these delights, she may have an acute kinesthetic orgasm, and all other cars, even if they are just as new and premium, will seem insipid and boring to her.

And you will have to unplanned to spend money on a new Velar for her, otherwise her life would lose all meaning. Yes, what is there to be hypocritical - you, too, will surely like the interior, especially since it is good not only with rags.

In the enthusiastic crowd of jackets Armani and D&G dresses it was not possible to properly test the head unit on Velar, but what he saw is impressive. Three screens - digital tidy and two central, with excellent graphics and performance.

When they debuted in Paris a couple of years ago Volvo XC90 and Land Rover Discovery Sport, the Briton with his wretched display looked like an alien from a bygone era. Now, no inferiority is felt, on the contrary. At first glance, the division of functionality into two screens at different angles to the driver (the lower one is “littered” forward more) is more ergonomic than one vertical screen on Volvo or, say, Tesla.

Unlike the line discovery, It's definitely not a family car. In the back row Velar is a bit crowded, even if you sit “by yourself” with a modest 175 cm height. Flaw? Not for the intended audience. As well as stripped-down off-road capabilities.

But by the way, do not rush to write down Velar as the heroes of asphalt and nothing more. Yes, the transmission is simplified, and the overhangs are obviously too big for a real SUV. And in general, who will trample on a swamp if it has a suede steering wheel and the ceiling is upholstered in snow-white Alcantara? But if you really want to, then you can. After all, there is Terrain Response 2 with a variety of transmission algorithms for driving on different surfaces, and the ground clearance can be increased to 251 mm using pneumatics.

Motors? Motors are different. There are very boring 2-liter turbodiesels with 180 hp. Inexpensive, but from the outside it will still look pretentious, besides, the expense is excellent. Petrol "two-liter" a little more fun: 250 forces, within the framework of tax prudence. The next 240-horsepower turbodiesel in the hierarchy will probably go a little more fun, also without forcing you to go broke on maintenance. Well, for uncompromising buyers there will be V6- 300 hp diesel and 380 hp petrol with compressor.

Prices? Already known. It all starts with 3,880,000 rubles, and ends with 7,178,000. You can read more, but for now you can just keep in mind that the “fork” of prices for a regular Range Rover- from 6,304,000 to 11,649,000 rubles.

SPECIFICATIONS

Front and rear, the car has independent suspensions - "double-lever" and "multi-link", respectively. By default, it "flaunts" electronically controlled shock absorbers with variable stiffness, and for an extra charge it can also be equipped with an air suspension with adjustable ride height. For steering "responsible" rack with variable tooth pitch and adaptive electric power steering. All five-door wheels accommodate ventilated disc brakes, complemented by ABS, EBD, BA and other assistance electronics.

Global market trends force manufacturers to look for ideal models for successful sales, so the Range Rover brand line has been replenished with a new luxury SUV named Velar, which has occupied its niche between the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport. The presentation took place at the Geneva Motor Show 2017.

APPEARANCE

The design of the novelty is made in some minimalist style. However, the branded grille, Matrix-Laser LED head optics, gills on the hood and 18-21 inch wheels give a spectacular look with a share of sporty aggression. At the rear, we see curvaceous shapes, 3D-graphic lights and a powerful bumper that includes large trapezoid exhaust pipes. Velar's drag coefficient of only 0.32 Cx is a record among all Range Rover models, this is achieved in several ways: the most even bottom, retractable door handles at a speed of 8 km / h, smooth body lines, as well as littered A-pillars. It is worth noting the "cunning" spoiler, thanks to which dust and dirt do not fall on the rear window, but are simply blown away by the air flow.

INTERIOR

An interesting paradox occurs in the interior of Velar: visually, the interior looks simple, however, it is crammed with a number of technological innovations. This was achieved by replacing physically controlled buttons with sensors, screens and virtual pucks. Even the steering wheel has touch-sensitive touchpads, and the dashboard has an Interactive Driver with a 12.3-inch full-color screen, some parameters are projected onto the windshield. In the center is the Touch Pro Duo system, which includes a 10-inch touch screen that changes the angle of inclination and is responsible for the multimedia system. Below is its static "brother" that controls the 4-zone climate control and off-road Terrain Response settings. In the interior trim, we see: Windsor leather, expensive Premium Textile fabric from Kvadrat and stainless steel decorative inserts. The front seats have a pronounced anatomical dressing and lateral support; for a surcharge, you can install ventilation and a massage function. Rear passengers will get comfortable seats with heating, ventilation and USB connectors.

MOTORS

There is no doubt that we have an SUV in front of us, because the Range Rover Velar is able to easily move through difficult places, thanks to its ground clearance and all-wheel drive. According to the manufacturer, the car is even capable of towing a trailer with a gross weight of up to 2500 kg. The novelty will enter the market with three diesel and two petrol engines. Paired with an 8-speed automatic from ZF.

START OF SALES VELAR

The start of sales of the new Range Rover Velar in America, China and Europe will take place in the summer of this year at a price of 49,900 to 89,300 dollars in North America and from 56,400 to 108,700 euros (Velar First Edition version) in the European market, and Velar will get to Russia closer to autumn 2017.

NEW RANGE ROVER VELAR VIDEO

We got behind the wheel of the sexy new Range Rover Velar for a test drive and it proved to be very capable on and off the road.

pros: a very interesting design and interior, a large number of configurations to choose from, powerful engines, an unsurpassed Range Rover exterior, smart electronics.

Minuses: the inability to connect an iOS or Android phone to the multimedia system (which is very bad at such a price for the Range Rover Velar), tire noise is heard in the cabin at speed, there is little room for rear passengers.

Main competitors: Porsche Macan, Audi Q5, BMW X4, BMW X3, Jaguar F-Pace, Mercedes GLC.

No wonder you'll be waiting at least over a month if you order the Velar now - it's one of the most coveted crossovers you can buy. It's modern, super stylish and will pamper you with an impressive level of comfort and refinement, plus all the same crossover capabilities you'll find in the Land Rover Discovery. However, Velar is not as cheap as the latter, and many rivals offer better technology and more space for passengers. Regardless, we have no doubt that the Velar will be another massive hit for Jaguar Land Rover.

With the growth in sales that other models of the concern show, you expect that the mass character of this crossover will only grow, but so far this is not happening. So can the new Range Rover Velar prove that the company still has a fuse? This is what the 2017 Range Rover Velar test drive will show.

2017 Range Rover Velar first review

The Velar is set to carve out a market niche between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport models and take a fresh look at RR's crossover family. Slim LED headlights and taillights that wrap around the car, a more slanted grille and an invisible test-drive door handle give the Range Rover a big upgrade.

It's a clean and uncluttered style with subtle detailing such as fold lines running from the front light to the rear through elongated side vents. And it's proof that design director Gerry McGovern is a true talent.

Land Rover calls this "reductionist" styling, and the styling is further emphasized by the interiors - one of the most stunning interiors we've ever seen on a test drive. The traditional clean horizontal line is traversed by a center section running from the center console all the way to the all-new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system.

Photos of the new Range Rover Velar

The two 10-inch touch screens are both a work of art and a genius in terms of usability. When they are off, they hide the black panels, adding to the minimalist interior. But when the car is turned on, the panels come to life with high-definition displays and the top unit swivels forward 30 degrees to greet you.

Embedded at the bottom of the bottom screen are two large dials with their own LED displays and a central volume knob. The lower monitor controls heating and ventilation, as well as an improved terrain system, with two sets working with either setting. The top screen will run the navigation, phone and audio system, while both screens were easy to use, rolling from one control to the next.

It is a truly intuitive system and easily connects to your smartphone. There's an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot if you want to connect to the internet from your devices, and the car learns your routes and makes suggestions to avoid traffic or help you find a parking spot. Moreover, during the test drive of the Range Rover Velar, the navigation system worked just fine. There are three Meridian stereos on sale to choose from.

OK, we started with the good news, now it's time for the bad news - RR Velar still can't help you if you want to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. In this regard, the company clearly lags behind its competitors.

Range Rover Velar test drive by Stenni

This also applies to autonomous technologies. Undoubtedly, on a test drive, the Range Rover Velar showed how good its adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, traffic assistance system, automatic parking system and traffic sign recognition are. The Volvo XC60, for example, showed no sign of an emphasis on self-driving in a test drive. But this car is pretty close to autopilot, and it also offers a beautifully built, stylish interior and an easy-to-use touchscreen.

On the issue of cost - the price range varies quite a lot depending on the configuration and modification, starting at 3,900,000 rubles for the base Velar model with a 250 hp four-cylinder gasoline engine. Even though it's a base model, it's reasonably well-equipped. But if your dealer can't convince you to buy a $7,200,000+ First Edition Range Rover Velar with just oversized wheels, a Meridian sound system, and navigation, they're not doing their job.

But if you just want to look sportier without overpaying, then the R-Dynamic package (which was on the test drive) will save you a lot of money worth from 4.6 million rubles.

Other engines include two more diesels: a 2-litre inline and a 3-litre V6. There are three versions of gasoline engines: 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 3.0-liter V6 with 250 hp. or a 3.0-liter flagship V6 that produces a mind-blowing 375 hp.

We suspect that the 2.0-litre diesel in the SE trim may well be the sweet spot in the huge range of modifications to choose from (there are 27 trims in total in Russia), but now we have a 3.0-liter diesel in the R specification on a test drive (approx. Translator) -Dynamic HSE. This equipment is beautiful and well equipped and looks very expensive.

Our test drive route for the Range Rover Velar in Norway was free of motorways, so we'll have to wait and see how the Velar gets by on the adaptive cruise control, but it appears to be a superbly refined car to drive. It is difficult to convey the sensations that a V6 diesel under the hood gives, if you are accelerating strongly, perhaps it is better for you to take this car for a test drive in a car dealership. But on larger wheels, you will notice a bit of road noise, and this is not exactly a plus for the Range Rover Velar.

This test drive video is dedicated to the Range Rover Velar. This is a new crossover, one might say - an SUV. It occupies an intermediate position between the Evoque and Land Rover Sport. It is the same size as the F-pace it is based on. It turned out more luxurious and innovative. "Live" Velar will appear in Russia in September. Although the base price is declared from 3.8 million, the top versions will reach 7.8 million rubles.

Appearance

Our video review format allows everyone to appreciate the simply fantastic appearance of the Land Rover Velar. It is the quintessence of Land Rover design. Even in a test drive, the Land Rover Velar looks like a concept car, like a model that is shown at exhibitions, but does not drive on the roads. This is a production model that really sells and drives. Of course, this is hard to believe when you look at the shape and perfect door handles.

Front and rear mounted innovative LED optics. Moreover, if earlier they simply installed LEDs, now they have developed branded LEDs, including a laser light source. And Velar has just such a light. Naturally, this is an option that you will have to pay generously for, and it really is worth it. The appearance with such headlights and, most importantly, road lighting, is fantastic. Land Rover Velar is able to adapt to the light beam, as well as track passing and oncoming traffic.

And in terms of design - superfluous, which was not needed in the car, was removed here. It is simply full of ingenious simplicity. On the other hand, there are a lot of aerodynamic elements, decorations, and this car looks elegant.

Suspension

The car has either spring or air suspension. It comes standard with a V6 engine and can also be installed on a 4-cylinder engine. Chassis tuning is done in such a way that it becomes clear that the car is designed for comfort. There is no huge difference between the modes. In fact, an adapted passenger platform from Jaguar, which is improved for air suspension.

Compared to other Land Rover models, there is a big difference: it rides better, but the body sway is very felt.

Interior

There is a new Touch Pro Duo system that combines two large 5-inch displays. New generation of multimedia. Now we have two displays made with a mirror coating, similar to those on smartphones. It doesn’t look very good on camera, everything is reflected and you see your hand, stabilizer or attachment.

In front of my eyes, on the contrary, the monitor is bright and contrasting, and even the bright sun does not distract. You can adjust the angle of inclination. As the test drive showed, the electronics work well, but the performance is almost lacking. There is a slight delay on pressing.

The main feature of the Range Rover Velar 2017 is a large display that allows you to control several systems at once. Depending on which menu you are in, it shows a different picture and controls. At the top of the menu, where there is climate control (here you can select and adjust the temperature and other characteristics), seats (you can turn on heating, massage, if you have one), control system (modes that are available, you can choose them. The washer allows you to change them).

But the greater the load, the more phones are connected, the more systems are activated, the worse the system works.

Specular reflections are very dirty. And there is a big risk of damaging the screen, and it only changes with the entire block. In the test, we calculated how much it costs, but no protection or special coating for electronics is provided. True, there is no effect on the monitor, except for fingers. You can drop your keys or phone on the bottom screen and scratch it. This will be a problem. There are a lot of transparent surfaces and the Land Rover Vilar will obviously be very picky about how you look after it.

Range Rover Vilar has a new instrument panel, essentially its next generation. Made buttons on the steering wheel with a mirror surface, which are rubberized inside. The only thing that spoils the impression is that the system itself slows down a little. The manipulators are complex and when driving there is a risk of missing and poking around in the menu for a very long time.

At the same time, a very large number of variations of the instrument panel. You can choose from a classic, a large monitor with navigation, and a sporty version.

Also, a test drive showed some problems with soundproofing. On the one hand, it is very quiet, although there are no double windows and, in general, there are almost no aerodynamic sounds. But on the other hand, the main problem is the rumble from tires with a diameter of 20, 21 or 22 inches. Especially from 22 inches. And on the pavement with an innovative coating (mostly Russian is just like that), it becomes simply indecent.

Salon

The video shows that the car has a very high quality finish. A huge amount of expensive materials - leather, aikantara. These are separate options and you will have to pay for them, but the interior looks luxurious. There are also strange things. Behind - a button that allows you to adjust the inclination of the backrest of the rear seat. Expensive music and Kevlar trim.

Vilar has a large number of motor modifications. There are six of them: a two-liter four-cylinder (gasoline and diesel), V 6, a three-liter (gasoline and diesel). The ZF eight-speed doesn't really run very fast, and even the super-powerful 380-horsepower engine lacks traction. But on a diesel engine, traction is much better. First of all, due to the fact that you do not need to switch. There is enough traction, you can even go in one gear.

Conclusion

Short summary: Maybe not as functional as it could be, but it looks just fine. Ground clearance is one of the largest in the class when it comes to the pneumatic version (it's 251 mm).
