The first generation Subaru Impreza in sedan and station wagon modifications debuted in 1992. Later, in 1994, exclusive Impreza coupes began to be produced in small quantities. The car occupied an empty niche between the Subaru Legacy and Subaru Justy. At first, the authors of the Impreza project had one task - to make a production car that would become a reliable “base” for participation, and possibly for victory, in the WRC world rally championship. Thanks to the efforts of the designers, the car turned out to be bright and unusual, and it was this super-individuality that was the trump card that allowed the Subaru Impreza to establish itself in the market and win the recognition of customers.

The stylish body design looks great to this day. The interior is quite ascetic, mainly due to the abundance of plastic, but the quality of assembly and fit of materials makes up for this drawback. The interior is not too spacious, but the ergonomics of the driver's seat are close to ideal. The Impreza was positioned not just as a family car, but as a car with a “sports bent.” At a very reasonable price, the model was able to give the driver a lot of pleasure from active driving.

Three trim levels - front-wheel drive Impreza with a 1.5 L/90 HP engine, all-wheel drive with a 1.6 L/102 HP engine, and all-wheel drive with a 1.8 L/115 HP engine. With. – fully satisfied the needs of people who purchased Subaru Impreza for family use. Choice of: 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic.

At the same time, the Impreza WRX category was developing in parallel, equipped with a two-liter turbocharged engine producing 155 hp. and 4WD, aimed at sports driving enthusiasts. Compared to the base Impreza model, the WRX featured wider, low-profile tires, upgraded brakes and a stiffer suspension. The front and rear wheels were equipped with ventilated disc brakes. The total weight of the car was 1220 kg. The extreme version's suspension is much stiffer than on civilian versions, but it is also much stronger. And the lack of comfort is compensated by amazing handling and stability at extreme speeds.

As the model developed, the family trim levels, which included Impreza with 1.8 and 1.6 liter engines, were abandoned. They were replaced by models with a two-liter engine. As for reliability, the Impreza will not disappoint you here either, since all units are quite durable. The bodies are almost immune to corrosion because they are galvanized.

Until 1999, not a single complete change was made to the Subaru Impreza model range; there was only a partial restyling of the body. In 2000, the second generation debuted.

The Impreza WRX sedan began to be equipped with a turbocharged engine producing 250 hp. and an engine with a natural intake type with a power of 155 hp. For true fans of this brand, the Subaru Impreza WRX STi was also released in 2000 with a 4-cylinder horizontally opposed EJ20 engine. It developed 280 hp. with a torque of 38.0 kg/m. This car was equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission with close gear ratios. The Subaru Impreza WRX STi was shod with 16-inch tires. Large intercooler, independent suspension, Brembo brake system, etc. provided the car with excellent driving characteristics. The all-wheel drive system “consisted” of a central differential and a viscous limited slip differential (Limited Slip Differential).

In 2002, the car underwent another minor update to the model range, and, of course, the Impreza in the STi version only became better. The engine has been modified: torque has increased. In addition, the car in the Spec C configuration was shod with 17-inch tires and equipped with an electronically controlled all-wheel drive system.

The second generation, in turn, can be divided into two versions: pre-restyling and post-restyling. They differ from each other only in small details, and the front of the Impreza, or more precisely, the front optics, has undergone the most radical redesign. The fact is that in 2002, the Subaru factory rally team received a number of complaints about the “stylish round” headlights. The shape of such optics did not allow the placement of racing spotlights for better illumination of the track in high-speed sections with poor visibility. There were also serious complaints about the aerodynamics of the front end. The wishes were accepted, Subaru specialists thoroughly worked on the car, installing new, no less stylish headlights instead of the round ones, and corrected the aerodynamics of the front end.

In general, the technical content of the two generations of Impreza is practically the same; the modifications remain almost the same, only changing their name. As for the types of engines, gearboxes, suspension geometry - all this was transferred from the old to the new generation only with minor modernization.

The third generation Impreza appeared on the Japanese market in 2007 and was initially presented only in a hatchback body. The model was equipped with a 1.5-liter DOHC engine producing 107 hp. or a 2-liter SOHC with 150 hp, the former being available in combination with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic, and the latter only with a 4-speed automatic. The car was offered in both single-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. In 2008, for marketing reasons, a sedan was added to the Impreza body line. The car was distinguished by increased comfort, a new radiator grille design, chrome body trim elements and gave a general impression of luxury.

The extended wheelbase has increased the rear passenger space, and thanks to the new suspension, trunk volume has increased. The doors now open wider, in particular the rear doors now open to 75°, which increases the practicality of the car. For the first time, the Impreza features framed side windows on the doors for improved sound insulation. Thanks to the independent suspension on dual parallel A-arms, the trunk volume has increased. Both the sedan and hatchback now feature 60/40 split folding rear seats. The hatchback has a rear spoiler as standard and is 160 mm shorter than the sedan. By tradition, the model received a proprietary symmetrical all-wheel drive.

The “charged” version of the WRX received a 2.5-liter turbo engine producing 230 hp. The engine has been significantly modified: the amount of harmful emissions has been significantly reduced. This naturally aspirated engine with an overhead camshaft received a new intake system, as well as a new type of catalytic converter. The top version of the Impreza received a new six-speed manual transmission.

The WRX STI has an even more powerful engine, unique outboard aerodynamic elements, an upgraded suspension, eighteen-inch alloy wheels, Brembo brakes, a CD changer, pronounced sports seats and Alcantara upholstery. The STI model is equipped with an SI-drive system, three engine operating modes, and an electric throttle valve. Two packages are available for the WRX. The BBS package includes BBS wheels and headlights, the BBS and Navigation package also includes a navigation system (replacing the conventional CD changer), trip computer and Bluetooth. Under the hood of the Impreza WRX STI is a turbocharged 2.5-liter DOHC engine producing 300 hp. at 6000 rpm, which is paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

As standard, the car is equipped with two front and two side airbags, as well as air curtains. All versions are equipped with a collision-proof pedal assembly. Most trim levels are equipped with a dynamic stabilization system (VDC).

In 2010, the Subaru Impreza family underwent restyling, receiving a new false radiator grille and a modified front bumper. At the Motor Show in New York, the premiere of the updated “charged” version of the WRX STi and the sedan version of the WRX took place. Sales of cars with 1.5-liter engines were discontinued this year.

The Subaru Impreza WRX STI sedan debuted at the New York Auto Show in April 2010. According to the manufacturer, the model was to continue the legendary series and become “the fastest WRX STI ever produced.” At the same time, for the first time in its long history, the Subaru Impreza WRX STI received 2 body modifications at once - a 5-door hatchback and a 4-door sedan.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI design

If you compare the exterior of the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI with the base model, all the traditional attributes of a sports modification become visible - a low aerodynamic body kit, a modified radiator grille, a spoiler and standard 18-inch wheels.

Engine Subaru Impreza WRX STI

Under the hood of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI lies a 4-cylinder boxer engine with a volume of 2.5 liters and a power of 300 hp. Along with the 6-speed manual transmission, customers were offered a 5-speed automatic gearbox for the first time.

Transmission Subaru Impreza WRX STI

Working in tandem with the engine, it allows the Subaru Impreza WRX STI 2011 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6 seconds, and with mechanics this result improves to 5.2 seconds. As for the fuel consumption of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, it differs slightly and in the combined cycle is 10.6 and 10.5 liters per 100 km, respectively. The Subaru Impreza WRX STI is equipped with a proprietary all-wheel drive transmission. A new feature is the complementary SI-DRIVE system, which allows you to optimize the driving performance of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI depending on the driving mode.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI modes

In Intelligent mode, the Subaru Impreza WRX STI is tuned for urban driving with reduced fuel consumption while maintaining good throttle response, Sport mode is suitable for dynamic driving, and Sport Sharp allows you to reveal the full Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Also, in comparison with the hatchback, the suspension configuration was changed - the rigidity of the front suspension increased by 15%, the rear - by 53%.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI trim levels

As standard, the new Subaru Impreza WRX STI is equipped with xenon headlights, electrically adjustable leather sports seats, hill start assist, keyless entry, climate control and an audio system with a changer and Bluetooth. In addition, the list of basic equipment of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI includes Brembo brakes, a dynamic stabilization system and 8 airbags.

Why choose the WRX and WRX STI?

Driving safety is a hallmark of any Subaru vehicle, but it is most clearly seen in the sport models. Reinforced frame system and 7 airbags: front, side, curtain, knee airbags. In the event of a frontal collision, the horizontally opposed engine moves to the bottom of the car, so it cannot enter the cabin. The built-in ERA-Glonass system is included in all vehicle configurations. A special button allows you to quickly contact help services if a dangerous situation arises.

But the main feature is the car’s ability to both protect and prevent the occurrence of an unpleasant situation on the road. Dynamic stabilization, active torque distribution - these technical characteristics of the Subaru WRX STI and WRX allow you to be confident in every movement. Some trim levels include a whole range of active safety systems for detecting vehicles moving behind - SRVD. Sensors eliminate the risk of blind spots by alerting the driver to the possibility of a collision when reversing.
