Chevrolet SS is an American sedan faster than lightning. Automotive abbreviations and acronyms Prices and options

In mid-February 2013 in Florida at the Daytina International Speedway, Chevrolet organized the official presentation of the first rear-wheel drive sports sedan since 1996 called SS (Super Sport), which is a redesigned version of the Australian four-door Holden Commodore VF and received a V8 gasoline engine from the Corvette supercar.

In September 2015, the car underwent a slight “rejuvenation” procedure and received an upgraded exhaust system, and at the end of 2017 it could “retire from the scene” at the same time as the original model.

With its appearance, the Chevrolet SS radiates power and aggression, but at the same time, from the outside it looks like an ordinary family sedan with classic three-volume proportions. A pompous “face” with vicious lighting equipment, a double cutout of the radiator grille and a powerful front “apron”, a dynamic silhouette with a long hood and “protruding” wheel arches, a muscular rear with beautiful lights and a “quartet” of exhaust pipes - the car is really good in appearance and harmoniously composed.

In terms of external dimensions, the Chevrolet SS belongs to the full-size car segment and is 4966 mm long, 1897 mm wide and 1470 mm high. The wheelbase of the four-door occupies 2916 mm of the total length, and its “combat” weight varies from 1796 to 1803 kg, depending on the modification.

The interior of the American sedan is designed in an attractive and modern style with a hint of sportiness, and it is finished as it should: the interior is dominated by high-quality plastics, metal inserts and genuine leather.

The multifunctional “steering wheel” with a pronounced relief is flattened at the bottom, the instrument cluster with two “wells” and a color display is elegant and informative, and the symmetrical center console with an 8-inch multimedia center screen and a stylish “remote” for the climate system is beautiful and very presentable in appearance.

The front seats of the Chevrolet SS are equipped with magnificent sports seats with a developed side profile, integrated headrests and electrical adjustment in eight directions. On the second row of seats there is enough space for three passengers, but only two will be as comfortable as possible - this is due to the high floor tunnel.

The luggage compartment of a full-size sedan is small - its volume is only 464 liters. The rear sofa does not fold down, but only has a hatch in the back that allows you to transport long items.

Specifications. Hidden in the engine compartment of the Chevrolet SS is an naturally aspirated petrol eight LS3, made entirely of aluminum, with a V-shaped configuration, a distributed fuel supply system and a 32-valve timing belt. The engine with a displacement of 6.2 liters (6162 cubic centimeters) generates 415 horsepower at 5900 rpm and 563 Nm of torque at 4600 rpm.

It is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed hydromechanical automatic transmission with the ability to change gears using steering wheel paddles, which direct the full amount of traction to the wheels of the rear axle.

With an automatic transmission, this full-size sedan shoots from 0 to 96 km/h in 4.7 seconds and has a top speed of 257 km/h (speed limited by electronic collar).

In combined driving conditions, for every “hundred” of travel, the car consumes 14 liters of fuel, of which 16.8 liters are spent in city mode, and 11.2 liters on the highway.

Structurally, the Chevrolet SS is distinguished by a classic design: the power plant is located in the front (in the longitudinal direction), and the drive wheels are in the rear. The sports sedan is based on the global GM Zeta platform, where all components and assemblies are assembled on an integral supporting structure made of steel with auxiliary subframes. The front axle of the car has an independent suspension with MacPherson struts, and the rear uses a multi-link configuration (both have transverse stabilizers and coil springs).
The American rack and pinion steering system is paired with an electric power steering with progressive characteristics. The “hot temper” of the engine is designed to pacify a powerful braking complex with ventilated front and rear Brembo “pancakes” (355 mm and 322 mm, respectively), as well as ABS, EBD and other electronic assistants.

Options and prices. Official sales of the Chevrolet SS are carried out only in the North American market, where the three-box is in small but stable demand. In the USA, for a “charged” car in 2016, the minimum asking price is $46,575, and a very generous “filling” is offered for this money. As standard, the sedan has: eight airbags, a multimedia complex with an 8-inch screen and navigation, premium Bose music with nine speakers, an automatic parking system, dual-zone climate control, 19-inch wheel rims and heated front sports seats. , ventilation and electrical adjustments. In addition, the basic package of the car includes a large number of modern “goodies” that are responsible for safety and comfort.

On February 16, 2013, Chevrolet held a presentation at the Daytona International Speedway track of the new powerful rear-wheel drive SS sedan, as well as its racing modification for participation in NASCAR races.

As expected, the 2017-2018 Chevrolet SS is an almost exact copy of the Holden Commorode SS V sedan presented a little earlier for the Australian market. These models differ from each other in nameplates, wheel design, exhaust pipes and steering wheel location (on Holden it is on the right).

The Chevrolet SS is based on the global GM platform, which is used on the Camaro coupe and the Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle sedan. There hasn’t been a similar model in the American automaker’s lineup for almost two decades.

Under the hood of the new Chevrolet SS there is a 6.2-liter V8 engine of the LS3 family from a supercar, producing 415 “horses” and a peak torque of 562 Nm, which is transmitted to the rear axle wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission with the ability to manually shift with paddle shifters . Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes the sedan only 5.0 seconds.

The new model has MacPherson struts at the front, a multi-link rear suspension, base wheels with a diameter of 19 inches are shod with tires measuring 245/40 at the front and 275/35 at the rear, and Brembo brakes are equipped with 355 mm discs with four-piston calipers.

The company especially notes that the Chevrolet SS has a low center of gravity and optimal weight distribution along the axles in a ratio of 50/50. In addition, despite the powerful engine and rear-wheel drive, the car is quite easy to drive, which makes it possible to use the sedan as an everyday vehicle without any problems.

Sales of the Chevrolet SS in the States started in the fourth quarter of 2013; there is no information on the current price of the car. The sedan's standard equipment includes leather seats with 8 different adjustments, a large MyLink touch screen with navigation on the center console, a BOSE audio system with nine speakers and many safety systems.

In the fall of 2015, the presentation of the updated Chevrolet SS sedan of the 2017 model year took place, which received a more aggressive front end design. The car acquired a redesigned front bumper with different sections of running lights and vertical air intakes on the sides.

The mesh in the radiator grille has also changed, chrome has been added to the trim, the hood now sports ventilation slits, and the 19-inch wheels have changed in design. At the same time, the interior and technical features of the Chevrolet SS remained unchanged.

And one of the few technical innovations of the sedan was a new exhaust system, which began to sound quieter at low speeds and louder at high speeds. And instead of the two previous pipes, four appeared.

Chevrolet has officially revealed information about the new SS sports sedan, which debuted at the NASCAR Daytona 500. The new product became the company's first rear-wheel drive car, equipped with an 8-cylinder engine of its own production.

Chevrolet designers put a lot of effort into making the car as bright and sporty as possible. At the same time, the sedan has quite large dimensions, which has a positive effect on the size of the cabin: passengers in the front have more than a meter of free legroom, and those in the rear have a little less.

The basic equipment of the Chevrolet SS includes 8-way sports seats, multimedia and sound systems, a head-up display, push-button start, a rear view camera and various safety systems (stable stability, collision warning, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping and others). Additionally, owners of a sports sedan can order an automatic parking system.

Video about the new 2014 SS sedan:

Even very young boys know what a Chevrolet Camaro is, but the Chevelle 1970, a larger muscle car from Chevrolet, is practically unknown in the CIS countries. You could see this car in the movie Fast and Furious 4, as well as in many games in the NFS series, but very few people will be lucky enough to see such a car live, especially if we are talking about the Chevelle SS 1970, which will be discussed below in It’s worth saying right away that the abbreviation SS, which can be found on both Chevelle and Camaro, has nothing in common with German criminals; these two letters stand for Super Sport and indicate that this is the most powerful modification of the Chevrolet Chevelle with an engine
V8 with a volume of 7.5 liters. The 1970 Chevelle was a larger car than the Camaro or something, so its competitors were: , and .

Despite the frame body, huge engine and dimensions resulting in a wheelbase of 2,900 mm, the curb weight of the SS modification is only 1,482 kg. Model 1970
can be recognized by a specific radiator grille and a more “square” front part of the car, and the SS LS-6 version is distinguished by special flaps on the hood, which open when the driver presses the gas, as a result of which the engine receives an additional portion of air. In the photo of the Chevelle 1970 SS you can see the appearance of this car and compare it with other muscle cars of those years.

The standard equipment of the SS included: a heated rear window, a radio receiver and even a cassette player. a player broadcast through two rear speakers. The Shevel's steering wheel can be adjusted for tilt; reach adjustment, like most other American cars, is not provided. It is interesting that on cars with a manual transmission, there are not two chairs in front, but a sofa, but the manual gearbox lever is located on the transmission tunnel, but cars with an automatic transmission were equipped with two separate seats; in the photo you can see how impressive the Chevel automatic transmission lever looks. The speedometer is only calibrated to 120 miles, but of course a car with such a powerful engine will easily overcome this mark.

Technical Specifications Chevrolet Chevelle SS 1970

The Chevel ES was equipped with a 454 V8, the volume of which, as mentioned above, was 7.5 liters.
The power of such an engine is 360 hp, but the power of the SS LS-6 version, which is equipped with an engine of the same displacement, but with a compression ratio increased to 11.25:1, is 450 hp, the torque of 680 N.m is impressive even today - amazing traction even for a turbocharged engine, but for an aspirated engine this is something completely unthinkable. With such an engine, the Chevel ES driver reaches 100 km per hour in just 6.1 s, and this car will need 13.7 s to cover a quarter mile.

Chevrolet Chevelle 1970 price

You can buy a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS in the USA for $30,000. We are talking about a car in good condition. The price of the Chevrolet SS 1970 in Russia is very unlikely to drop below $100,000.

The Chevel was one of the most powerful and therefore fastest cars in the golden era of muscle cars. It may not be as famous as the Mustang or Camaro, but today this is more of an advantage than a disadvantage, because the Chevel, like on the avenues of our cities, seems to be aliens from those distant times when gasoline in the States was cheaper than tap water, and the difference per liter is engine volume was considered insignificant.

Almost all car enthusiasts on the planet know, however, what kind of car the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 1970 was - which was a much stronger muscle car from Chevrolet - almost no one in our countries knows. This is a mid-class car, produced by General Motors between 1964 and 1977. It was without a doubt the most successful and powerful Chevrolet car. The car was produced in coupe, sedan, convertible and station wagon body styles. The SS (Super Sport) modification was published in 1973. You could notice this car in the movie “Fast and Furious 4”, which was parked in the garage of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and was subsequently blown up in Mexico. The car was also present in many games in the NFS series. In general, it is very rare to see this car in person. The entire Chevrolet lineup.

Exterior

Despite the body frame, the huge engine and the dimensions caused by the wheelbase of 2,900 mm, the Chevrolet Chevel weighs only 1,482 kg. The '70 release is possible with a universal radiator grille and a slightly “square” muscle car nose. Updated sports wheels and a new “power dome” hood have found their place. The SS LS-6 model features specialized flaps located on the hood, which can open when the driver presses the gas pedal, after which the engine receives an auxiliary dose of air. A year after its release, in 1971, the Chevel received an updated exterior design that included “Power-Beam” headlights, a new grille, and a bumper with built-in parking and reverse lights.

Interior

The standard equipment of the SS included: heated rear glass, a radio and a cassette player, the playback of which was possible thanks to two rear speakers. The steering column of the Chevrolet Chevel coupe could actually be adjusted according to the angle of inclination, but the adjustment for reach, like on other American-made cars, was not preset. Looking into the interior of an American coupe with a manual transmission, you will notice that not a pair of chairs were installed, but a solid sofa, but the gearbox shift knob itself had its place on the transmission tunnel. Cars with an automatic transmission came with a pair of separate seats. The speed limit on the instrument panel is up to 120 miles per hour, but a car with such a powerful engine could easily exceed this mark.

Specifications

The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS coupe was supplied with a 454 petrol V8 engine, the volume of which was 7.5 liters. In terms of power, a similar unit was capable of squeezing out 360 horsepower, but the power of the SS LS-6 model, equipped with an engine of the same type and volume, but with an improved compression ratio, produced 450 horses and a torque of 680 N.M. sometimes even today many supercars lack. This is rare even for an engine with a turbine, but with an atmospheric engine it’s absolutely fantastic. The restyled model will be equipped with a new special suspension.

Prices and options

You can buy a 1970 Chevrolet Chevel SS in the United States for about $30,000. In Russia, it is possible to purchase a similar muscle car for about 2,000,000 rubles. The price will vary depending on the year of manufacture (the more years, the more expensive), engine, configuration and general condition of the car.

Let's sum it up

The 1970 Chevrolet SS Coupe was the final Muscle Car type car that was very popular all over the world. This happened due to the adoption in 1971 of a number of laws that limited emissions standards in the wake of the fuel crisis. Based on this, manufacturers had no choice but to reduce the power of their engines. A number of changes also affected the Chevrolet company, when the next car was released with an engine configuration of only 245 hp. After such changes, the passion for the special model of the car began to gradually subside, which was a consequence of the end of production of the Chevrolet SS Chevelle in 1977. But this car still remains in demand among those taking part in drag racing. It’s not for nothing that the protagonist of the movie “The Fast and the Furious” drove this particular car, which was the embodiment of unsurpassed speed and power. Among its advantages are a strong engine, good handling, unique appearance features and an unsurpassed exhaust sound.
