In mid-February 2013 in Florida at the Daytina International Speedway, Chevrolet organized the official presentation of the first rear-wheel drive sports sedan since 1996 called SS (Super Sport), which is a redesigned version of the Australian four-door Holden Commodore VF and received a V8 gasoline engine from the Corvette supercar.

In September 2015, the car underwent a slight “rejuvenation” procedure and received an upgraded exhaust system, and at the end of 2017 it could “retire from the scene” at the same time as the original model.

With its appearance, the Chevrolet SS radiates power and aggression, but at the same time, from the outside it looks like an ordinary family sedan with classic three-volume proportions. A pompous “face” with vicious lighting equipment, a double cutout of the radiator grille and a powerful front “apron”, a dynamic silhouette with a long hood and “protruding” wheel arches, a muscular rear with beautiful lights and a “quartet” of exhaust pipes - the car is really good in appearance and harmoniously composed.

In terms of external dimensions, the Chevrolet SS belongs to the full-size car segment and is 4966 mm long, 1897 mm wide and 1470 mm high. The wheelbase of the four-door occupies 2916 mm of the total length, and its “combat” weight varies from 1796 to 1803 kg, depending on the modification.

The interior of the American sedan is designed in an attractive and modern style with a hint of sportiness, and it is finished as it should: the interior is dominated by high-quality plastics, metal inserts and genuine leather.

In combined driving conditions, for every “hundred” of travel, the car consumes 14 liters of fuel, of which 16.8 liters are spent in city mode, and 11.2 liters on the highway.

Structurally, the Chevrolet SS is distinguished by a classic design: the power plant is located in the front (in the longitudinal direction), and the drive wheels are in the rear. The sports sedan is based on the global GM Zeta platform, where all components and assemblies are assembled on an integral supporting structure made of steel with auxiliary subframes. The front axle of the car has an independent suspension with MacPherson struts, and the rear uses a multi-link configuration (both have transverse stabilizers and coil springs).
The American rack and pinion steering system is paired with an electric power steering with progressive characteristics. The “hot temper” of the engine is designed to pacify a powerful braking complex with ventilated front and rear Brembo “pancakes” (355 mm and 322 mm, respectively), as well as ABS, EBD and other electronic assistants.

Options and prices. Official sales of the Chevrolet SS are carried out only in the North American market, where the three-box is in small but stable demand. In the USA, for a “charged” car in 2016, the minimum asking price is $46,575, and a very generous “filling” is offered for this money. As standard, the sedan has: eight airbags, a multimedia complex with an 8-inch screen and navigation, premium Bose music with nine speakers, an automatic parking system, dual-zone climate control, 19-inch wheel rims and heated front sports seats. , ventilation and electrical adjustments. In addition, the basic package of the car includes a large number of modern “goodies” that are responsible for safety and comfort.

As expected, the 2017-2018 Chevrolet SS is an almost exact copy of the Holden Commorode SS V sedan presented a little earlier for the Australian market. These models differ from each other in nameplates, wheel design, exhaust pipes and steering wheel location (on Holden it is on the right).

The Chevrolet SS is based on the global GM platform, which is used on the Camaro coupe and the Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle sedan. There hasn’t been a similar model in the American automaker’s lineup for almost two decades.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes the sedan only 5.0 seconds.

The new model has MacPherson struts at the front, a multi-link rear suspension, base wheels with a diameter of 19 inches are shod with tires measuring 245/40 at the front and 275/35 at the rear, and Brembo brakes are equipped with 355 mm discs with four-piston calipers.

The company especially notes that the Chevrolet SS has a low center of gravity and optimal weight distribution along the axles in a ratio of 50/50. In addition, despite the powerful engine and rear-wheel drive, the car is quite easy to drive, which makes it possible to use the sedan as an everyday vehicle without any problems.

Sales of the Chevrolet SS in the States started in the fourth quarter of 2013; there is no information on the current price of the car. The sedan's standard equipment includes leather seats with 8 different adjustments, a large MyLink touch screen with navigation on the center console, a BOSE audio system with nine speakers and many safety systems.

In the fall of 2015, the presentation of the updated Chevrolet SS sedan of the 2017 model year took place, which received a more aggressive front end design. The car acquired a redesigned front bumper with different sections of running lights and vertical air intakes on the sides.

The mesh in the radiator grille has also changed, chrome has been added to the trim, the hood now sports ventilation slits, and the 19-inch wheels have changed in design. At the same time, the interior and technical features of the Chevrolet SS remained unchanged.

And one of the few technical innovations of the sedan was a new exhaust system, which began to sound quieter at low speeds and louder at high speeds. And instead of the two previous pipes, four appeared.
