What counts as daytime running lights. All connection diagrams for daytime running lights. Daytime Running Lights. Reviews and self-installation

Having a car now is not an indicator of success or wealth. Any working person is able to buy a vehicle. It makes life much easier and allows you to reduce the time spent on movement.

Daytime running light

A car is a complex technical device, and operating it requires care and concentration. To avoid emergency situations, engineers at factories try to designate and make the vehicle more visible as efficiently as possible while it is moving. For this purpose, low beam, side lights and daytime running lights are used. If everything is clear with the first ones, then the second ones should be read more carefully.

A daytime running light is a device that is designed to indicate a vehicle in moving traffic during daylight hours. It lights up when you turn the key and goes out when you switch to low beam.

Data show that since the adoption in the Russian Federation of the decree on the mandatory movement of cars with lights on, the number of accidents on the road has decreased by 1.5 times. Global indicators also record a decrease in accident rates.

Difference between DRL and other lighting devices

Many motorists confuse these concepts and believe that fog lights, low beam and headlights are daytime running lights. This opinion is erroneous and, unfortunately, widespread.

Side lights are small lights that are red or a similar color. They are located on corners or protruding parts of the vehicle and are designed to indicate its size in the dark. The brightness of the "dimensions" is significantly less than that of the DRLs. Installing lamps of higher power will not help either, since they are not in the area of the reflectors.

Low beam is used to illuminate the road. At the same time, it does not blind oncoming drivers. In some countries it is allowed to be used instead of navigation lights.

Fog lights are designed to indicate the vehicle in difficult weather conditions. They distribute light differently and are not as noticeable as DRLs.

Types of lights

In some cases, it is possible to replace standard headlights with light. In this case, it is necessary to take into account certain nuances. Because without them, including low or high beam, all the effectiveness of car designation is lost.

To answer the question “What kind of daytime running lights are there?”, you should consider their types.

High beam

This type of lights has become widespread in North America. The main difference between this type is the subdued light power. About 70% of the load is supplied to the lamps. As a result, the headlights shine brighter than the low beam, but do not blind oncoming traffic.

Nowadays such daytime running lights are increasingly being criticized. High beam lamps significantly consume fuel, and the main condition for DRLs should be their efficiency.

Low beam

In some European countries it is allowed as a DRL. However, this opinion causes a lot of controversy and controversy. In Russia and Belarus, it is allowed to replace running lights with low beams.

Fog lights

This type of lights is closest to daylight. According to the rules, in the countries of the former USSR, driving a car with fog lights on is legal. But abroad such travel on the road is prohibited. Foreign experts believe that they should be turned on only during times of reduced visibility due to meteorological conditions.

Independent headlights

Due to their low energy consumption, ease of installation and low price, these lighting devices have gained great popularity. LED lamps are the most common on cars. They produce an even, white light that is clearly visible even on a sunny day, plus they give an impressive look to the vehicle.

LED lamps on cars can be seen very often. These are LED DRL daytime running lights. An LED is a device that converts electricity into light radiation. The pioneer was the German company Audi. After it, many decided to install LEDs on cars. Now the introduction of DRL into the basic configuration is a standard procedure.

Places for installing DRLs

The car owner himself chooses what kind of lights his vehicle will have, if they are not included in the basic configuration. There are specific rules for installation in accordance with GOST and traffic regulations. The main points are:

  1. DRLs should be located no higher than 1.5 m above the ground.
  2. Installed symmetrically about the axis.
  3. They must not protrude beyond the overall dimensions of the vehicle.
  4. The number of lamps that is installed on the car is only one pair.
  5. They must be located in front of the car and shine along the trajectory of its movement.

Manufacturers

The pioneer was HELLA. It was she who proposed a system of lamps and LED solutions. By installing them on the first Audi car, they established the brand's signature "stripe" style. Other car manufacturers picked up the novelty, and since 2011, DRLs have become mandatory for car production.

Now there are many companies on the market that produce DRL. But only the best companies that create high-quality daytime running lights have excellent products.

Philips is a manufacturer that car enthusiasts simply need to know about if they are faced with DRLs. The company produces products for almost all car brands. It is distinguished by quality and low price.

Osram is another giant in the production of daytime lights. Its products feature signature designs and energy savings.

Devices made in China are becoming increasingly popular. However, they have neither normal quality nor a long service life. You should buy them only for decorating the car, and not for actual use. Chinese companies also produce high quality lights. But their price will be approximately the same as that of famous brands. Therefore, it is more profitable and reliable to purchase products from trusted companies.

DRL on a Lada-Kalina car

One of the reasons why it is necessary to replace daytime running lights: Kalina has dim yellow bulbs that are almost invisible when driving. Therefore, it won’t hurt to install LED lamps.

The main condition is to choose a device with the correct base. Otherwise, the fuses in the car will burn out. Suitable base type is W21/5W or P27/7W.

White light after installing new lamps will make the car more visible and give it a memorable look.

Daytime running lights on Kia Rio and Ford Focus

Traffic safety will increase significantly after installing such lamps. There are no problems with tuning, since there are regular places for the lights, provided by the developer.

When installing lamps, you should not choose the cheapest options. There is a large selection on the market, and finding a quality model is not difficult. This will save on connection costs and also reduce the risk of non-compliance with the technical parameters of the machine.

When choosing DRLs, you should consider the following points:

  1. The operating temperature must be at least 6100 Kelvin.
  2. The rated current on each diode is 50 Ma.
  3. Voltage – no more than 16 V.
  4. A secure connection diagram must be present.
  5. It is more profitable to choose products from leading brands - they will last much longer.

Installing DRLs is not mandatory, but experts advise adding this device to your car. The following reasons influence this:

  • Reduced energy consumption, generator load and fuel consumption.
  • Minimal investment will pay off in a short service life.
  • DRLs do not blind pedestrians or oncoming traffic.
  • Improves vehicle visibility.
  • Automatic switching on when the engine starts.
  • Easy installation.
  • Tightness and strength.
  • Improving the appearance of the car.

The best way to safely tune is daytime running lights. Ford Focus is perfect for installation. You can attach vertical lamps to the car in the places intended for them. This will improve the design and make the car more noticeable. No special knowledge is required during installation; an ordinary auto electrician can handle it.

Daytime Running Lights. Reviews and self-installation

Today you can find a lot of information about motorists who have decided to install DRLs. They all have one thing in common: these devices enhance the positive qualities of the vehicle.

But not many people can go to auto electricians and pay for the installation of lights. Therefore, if a person has a little knowledge, the necessary tools and free time, he will be able to fix and connect the lamps on his own.

First you need to decide on the manufacturer. Car enthusiasts recommend sparing no expense and purchasing high-quality DRLs from famous brands. There is a huge selection in stores now, and it won’t be difficult to find them.

It is necessary to install lights taking into account the design, type of bumper and its shape. Dimensions come with mounting. The number of LEDs and their brightness should be controlled in accordance with the requirements for DRLs.

The following components will be needed:

  • Six terminals and heat shrink for them.
  • Five-pin relay.
  • Cable with a cross section of 4 mm.
  • DRL unit.

The installation process is simple. DRLs are fixed in the required place, “+” and “-” are connected to them. Iron fasteners are soldered to the ground and attached to the body. Then an additional cable is connected to the low beam. The terminal is soldered and then insulated. A separate signal is supplied to each contact. Number 85 goes to the low beam, to 86 - "minus", to 87 - "plus" from the ignition. Finally, the DRL unit is connected to number 30.

If everything is done correctly, then when you start the engine, the car lights automatically light up. The headlights turn on - they go out. When the low beam goes out, the DRLs should work. Turn off the ignition and they will go out.

Daytime running lights have recently become very popular among motorists. What is DRL in a car, how to choose, what GOST requirements apply to daytime running lights, photos and video materials - all this can be found in the article.

Description of DRL

The function of DRLs is to make the car more visible to other road users during daylight hours. They refer to the external lighting of the car. Studies have been conducted that show that the use of running lights reduces the number of accidents.

Principle of operation

When the car starts, the on-board voltage increases to operating voltage. When the value reaches 13.2 - 13.7 V, it is memorized by the sensor, thanks to which the daytime running lights light up. When the engine is turned off, the voltage drops to zero and the lights turn off. In addition, they turn off if the low beam is turned on. It is prohibited to use them at the same time.

Device

What are daytime running lights? The design of their headlights mainly uses LED elements. To protect the LEDs from precipitation and temperature fluctuations, they are placed in a durable housing. The transparent part and the base are hermetically connected, which prevents moisture from getting inside. The durable shockproof shell of the case reliably protects the internal elements from mechanical damage.

The materials from which daytime running lights are made allow them to be used in any climatic conditions.

The use of LED diodes has the following advantages:

  • they shine brightly: bright running lights increase safety, as their light attracts attention;
  • low energy consumption makes it possible to save on fuel, as the load on the generating set is reduced;
  • long service life: high-quality lighting elements have increased wear resistance;
  • simple and easy to maintain: they light up when the engine is turned on and go out when the engine is turned off.

Varieties

There are several types of running lights on cars:

  1. Low beam. True, some have special requirements for the operation of low-beam headlights. They should illuminate part of the curb or road surface.
  2. When using high beams, they should be dim and shine parallel to the plane of the road. At the same time, the light should not blind oncoming drivers, so if oncoming traffic is approaching, the driver must turn off the high beams.
  3. In our country, according to traffic rules, the use of fog lights as DRLs is allowed. But in many countries this is prohibited. Experts explain this by its specificity only in bad weather conditions as additional lighting. Their power is not enough for them to fully perform the function of daylighting.
  4. The most acceptable option is independent headlights. Their advantage is ease of installation, low cost, low energy consumption, and independence in operation. In addition, they make it possible to give the car a beautiful appearance, for example, by installing round running lights or angel eyes. They have buttons for running lights, thereby providing the possibility of autonomous control. Many drivers like LED daytime running lights for the way they look on their car.

LED lights are divided into the following types:

  • single lensed LEDs called dragon or eagle eyes;
  • LEDs on a flexible rubber band;
  • in the form of plates;
  • , having ordinary plastic glass and lensed glass;
  • installed in lensed foglights.

What does the letter of the law say?

The decree, which states that it is mandatory to travel with headlights on during daylight hours, was adopted in 2010. Thus, all drivers, regardless of weather conditions, must turn on standard running lights during daylight hours.

If your car doesn’t have built-in DRLs, you can install them yourself or use low beams or PTF (video author: Artem Kvantov).

Selection options

DRLs are sold in the automotive market in a wide range. Therefore, when choosing DRLs, car enthusiasts ask themselves: which ones are better. LEDs are the most popular. Their main advantage is good brightness even on a sunny day.

Their installation gives the car a stylish appearance. In addition, they are economically beneficial, since they consume little energy, are not afraid of vibrations and jolts when moving, and have a long service life.

The degree of illumination and appearance depend on the number of LEDs in the block. From 1 to 12 diodes can be installed in one block. You should pay attention to the color of the LEDs. They can be blue or white.

Properly adopted LEDs should:

  • light up immediately after starting the engine;
  • turn off if the low beam or fog lights are turned on in the front headlights;
  • do not go beyond the dimensions;
  • be located at the same height.

Rating of the best DRLs

Many companies produce DRLs. However, there are leaders who, judging by reviews, have gained popularity among Russian car enthusiasts.

  1. Philips.
    It is the largest manufacturer of lighting fixtures and equipment. Produces all types of running lights for cars of various brands and models. The modules are compatible with all cars.
  2. Installing the modules is very simple. The cases are made of quality materials. The housings do not heat up during operation. The light from the lamps is quite bright.
  3. Osram.

Lighting devices from this manufacturer are distinguished by their stylish appearance and maximum efficiency. These qualities are inherent in all manufactured equipment. In the production of products, innovative technology is used: not a garland of LED lamps is installed, but one LED. The LED element is placed in a unique tube that protects from mechanical damage.

Hella.

Products manufactured under this brand are distinguished by their durability. The lighting elements are of high quality, which is confirmed by a long service life. The light from the diodes is quite bright.

Traffic regulations have required the use of daytime running lights during daylight hours since 2010. Violation is punishable by a fine of 500 rubles. or a warning. Instead of DRLs, it is allowed to turn on fog lights (PTF) or low beams.

    What are DRLs for?
  • Running lights are additional forward-facing lamps that turn on during the day. Their task is to improve the visibility of the car for other road users. Standards for DRL are set by a special UN commission - EEC. According to its regulations, all new cars starting from 2011 are equipped at the factories with external running lights of certain parameters.
  • they usually use powerful LED emitters that consume less energy compared to PTF and low beam, which means less fuel consumption and less load on the generator, and the battery lasts longer;
  • The rear lights together with the DRLs, as a rule, do not light up, so the brake lights are more clearly recognized by drivers driving behind.

In Russia, subject to certain requirements, self-equipping a car with running lights is not prohibited. Typically, certified LED lights are installed in the front bumper, the activation/deactivation of which is regulated by a special control module.

Russian requirements for DRLs

The characteristics of DRLs and the requirements for their installation are determined by Russian GOSTs 41.87-99 and 41.48-2004, taking into account the EEC Rules.

    DRL parameters:
  • emitters must be at least 40 cm in area;
  • White color;
  • the light source is not regulated, i.e. any lamps are allowed: incandescent, gas-discharge, LED;
  • luminous intensity - 400-800 cd.
    Required DRL operating mode:
  • automatically turn on simultaneously with the ignition;
  • go out when the headlights are turned on, except when the headlights flash to give warning signals.
    Installation/placement of DRL:
  • at a height of no lower than 25 and no higher than 150 cm above the road surface;
  • no more than 40 cm from the edge of the vehicle;
  • between the inner edges of a pair of DRLs - at least 60 cm.

In general, if you install DRLs on a car, then only certified devices - their parameters comply with Russian GOSTs. During installation, you must comply with all requirements for their placement.

Then running lights will be useful and safe, and, in addition, it will be possible to avoid fines for incorrect use of lighting devices.

To make a vehicle stand out on the road during daylight hours, it is equipped with daytime running lights. Their installation is optional, since you can use headlights, but this lighting has a number of disadvantages. You can select, install and connect DRLs in a car with your own hands, even without special knowledge in electrical engineering

What are daytime running lights

Daytime running lights (DRLs) are a light source that is directed forward and improves the visibility of the vehicle (vehicle) when driving during daylight hours. In 2010, a decree was issued in Russia stating that all vehicle owners must drive in the daytime with low beam headlights on. If we look at the statistics, the number of road accidents has noticeably decreased since the decree came into force. This results in the high efficiency of using DRL. In addition, such lighting allows you to give the car some individuality.

DRL appointment

So, we found out that LED lights allow you to identify a car on the road during daylight hours, and this is especially important in bright sunny weather or in summer rain. If you turn on the side lights, the vehicle will remain unnoticed, which is due to the lower intensity of the emitted light. The light from the dimensions is suitable for night time. Some motorists may have a question: what is the difference between DRLs and low beam headlights? Yes, you can drive with low beams, it is not prohibited by law, but there are some nuances that you need to know about:

  1. The service life of lamps and optics in general is reduced. When using expensive lighting equipment, replacing it will require considerable financial costs.
  2. When you turn on the low beam, the side lights turn on at the same time, and the instrument panel is also illuminated. This leads to increased energy consumption and correspondingly increased fuel consumption.

From the above we can conclude: purchasing and installing DRLs will be the right decision. There is an opinion that this type of lighting can be replaced by fog lights (FTL), but in reality this is not the case. Fog lights have a power consumption similar to that of low beam headlights.

Daytime running lights allow you to identify your vehicle on the road during daylight hours and make driving safer

Advantages

The design in question consists of LED elements. DRLs are equipped with a special operating mode when they are connected when the engine starts. This can be done by choosing one of the lamp connection diagrams below or by installing equipment with a control unit. When the low beam headlights are turned on, the power of the DRLs is reduced by 50%, as a result of which this light source acts as additional dimensions. Equipping a car with running lights simultaneously solves several problems:

  1. You don't have to constantly remember to turn on your headlights.
  2. LEDs are characterized by much lower energy consumption compared to conventional lamps used in headlights.
  3. Compared to high beams, DRLs do not blind oncoming drivers.
  4. The light beam of daytime running lights has an increased light spot size.

One of the important advantages of DRLs is their special design to indicate vehicles on the road. Compared to low beam headlights, they produce more light, which is noticeable to other drivers.

Installing DRLs has a number of advantages, one of which is the high brightness of the light, in contrast to low beam

How to choose

Many car owners are wondering about choosing DRLs. There are many options for this lighting system, and making a choice is sometimes not very easy. To make the right decision, you need to consider the size, shape, and location where the equipment will be installed. In addition, attention is paid to the brightness of the glow and the manufacturer. Let's look at each point in more detail.

In shape, as well as in size, DRLs can be very diverse. The housing shape of LED equipment can be round, oblong, triangular or square. Designs of individual parts connected to each other by wire are also possible. Before purchasing and installing one or another option, you need to find out whether it will fit in size and how it will look on your car. It is important to determine the installation location in accordance with GOST and taking into account the car bumper. Today, the most popular are rectangular-shaped DRLs in a cast housing. They can be installed on almost any car, which will make it more attractive.

Now regarding the brightness of the glow. Basically, the system under consideration consists of two blocks, which are mounted on the left and right on the front of the car. Each block includes a certain number of LEDs (1–12 pcs.). Depending on the number of elements, the brightness of the glow will be different. The standard block of daytime running lights consists of 5 LEDs, but this option is not suitable for every car. The arrangement of elements can be done at the bottom, top or in the middle. An important point: the glow color of the diodes must be white, i.e., the temperature is 5–6 thousand K (kelvin) and the luminous intensity is 400 cd (candelas).

The service life, characteristics and overall performance of LED equipment will depend on the choice of the manufacturer. The most popular companies in the field of optics are Hella, Osram, Philips. The equipment of these companies is of high quality and reliability. There are a number of other manufacturers, but they are inferior in terms of lighting characteristics to the brands superior to them.

DRLs have different shapes, characteristics, design features, and can be installed in different places on the front of the car

How to choose the right DRL? The basic rule to follow should be high brightness of the LED elements. It is advisable to choose those devices that have a current consumption of 0.5–1 A. At the same time, power is not always an indicator of the efficiency of daytime running lights. Some experts are of the opinion that the light beam of LED flashlights should be in the range of 550–700 cd. It is this light intensity that makes a vehicle visible from a distance of more than 1 km. In addition to the rectangular shape, the round one is no less popular, since such running lights are characterized by the effective operation of reflectors.

Preference should also be given to devices whose body is made of aluminum. This allows them to be equipped with more powerful LED elements, since the metal is endowed with high heat transfer, which contributes to better cooling when installing light sources with high efficiency. If we consider the best option from an installation point of view, then you should pay attention to those devices that have a direct connection to the battery, bypassing the ignition system. The operating principle of such equipment involves switching on when a certain voltage of the vehicle’s on-board network is reached.

Legal regulations for installing DRLs

It is important to know and take into account the requirements for the selection and installation of LED lights:

  • the number of LED blocks should be no more than 2 pcs.;
  • installation of DRLs on trailers is prohibited;
  • The running lights should turn on automatically;
  • the lighting block should be round or rectangular;
  • depending on the location of the DRLs, the size may vary: smaller devices are installed on the air intake, larger ones on the bumper;
  • LED blocks should have a brightness of 150–330 lumens, with the number of elements and their size selected independently.

During the installation process it is important to consider:

  • instead of running lights, you can use high beam headlights or fog lights;
  • there are no special requirements for the connection diagram;
  • daytime lights should be located at a distance of no more than 40 cm from the edge of the car body;
  • the distance between the DRLs must be at least 60 cm, and if the vehicle width is less than 130 cm, it can be reduced to 40 cm;
  • when installed, the running lights are directed forward, and the horizontal angle should be 20 ˚, vertical 10 ˚;
  • The use of navigation lights with a stroboscopic effect is prohibited;
  • The LEDs should light up when the engine starts and go out after turning on the head optics.

It is worth noting that self-installation of DRLs is permitted and legal in accordance with RF Decree No. 720, which dates back to September 2009. In this case, it is important not to fall under the restrictions of GOST, which requires certification of compliance of any changes in the design of the vehicle.

Installation of DRLs on a vehicle must be carried out taking into account the current regulations

How to install on a car with your own hands

First of all, it is worth saying that for the installation of the system in question you will need the following list of materials and tools:

  • pliers;
  • wire cutters;
  • soldering iron;
  • insulated two-core wire;
  • LED blocks;
  • 12V relay;
  • reed switch;
  • single-core wire;
  • plastic clamps.

Depending on the layout and installation location, the list may be different. If you are using Chinese-made DRLs, it is recommended to treat the housing with a sealant before installation to prevent water from getting inside. Let's consider several options for circuits with which you can connect DRLs.

Connection diagrams for daytime running lights

One of the simplest options is to automatically turn on the running lights when you turn on the ignition and start the engine. The circuit does not have any additional elements: the LED equipment is connected to the on-board power supply: plus to the ignition switch, minus to ground (body). This installation does not require any special skills or knowledge in electrical engineering.

A circuit that turns on daytime running lights automatically when the ignition is turned on

There is another scheme that is similar to the first, but the difference is that the running lights turn off when the low beam headlights are turned on. The differences are that the positive wire is connected, as in the previous circuit, and the negative wire is connected to the “+” of the low beam lamps. The operation of this circuit is due to the fact that conventional lamps are characterized by higher current consumption than LEDs and lower resistance. As a result, the lamp will not work even at full intensity, and this will not affect the operation of the running lights in any way. When the low beams are turned on, a “+” will appear on the negative wire of the DRLs, which will lead to them being turned off. But at the same time, turning on the high beam will lead to the start of the running lights. In this case, the DRLs can be connected to the headlights.

The scheme in which the DRLs are launched when the side lights are turned on

For the next circuit you will need an element such as a reed switch. In it, the DRLs operate when the engine is started and running. We connect the negative wire from the LED equipment to ground, and the positive wire to the 30th contact of the relay, 87th contact to the “+” of the battery or any wire with a large cross-sectional diameter, 85th contact of the relay is connected to the total ground, 86 to one of the contacts of the reed switch. The second terminal of the reed switch is connected to any “+”, for example, from the battery or generator. Next, we start the engine and by moving the reed switch we find the position at which the relay will operate and the LEDs will work. We attach the reed switch, which is previously placed in a heat-shrinkable tube, using a plastic tie to the generator in the appropriate position. If there is no reed switch, then you can slightly alter the circuit by connecting contact 86 to the oil pressure lamp, which is located on the instrument panel. As a result, the running lights will light up when the engine is started.

The inclusion of DRL can be achieved when starting the engine by using a reed switch

Installation locations

Many car owners install LED lighting far from following the rules. Therefore, you need to figure out in what places this type of lighting equipment can be installed:

  1. One of the installation methods is on the radiator grille from below. The car owner chooses running lights based on his preferences.
  2. Installing DRLs from below or above the radiator grille, using LED strips. This is one of the options that is not considered by law as DRL, since the LED strip is more of a tuning element than a lighting element.
  3. Installation of LEDs around the perimeter of the radiator grille. The option does not comply with vehicle safety regulations.
  4. Installation of LED strip in head optics. Widely used on tenth generation VAZ cars. This installation method meets the operating requirements and is approved for use.
  5. Installation of daytime running lights in the places provided for PTF (fog lights). This option is permitted for use and meets safety requirements. In most cases, round lanterns are used for this method. But since you can use fog lights instead of running lights, this option is not particularly popular.

Installation and connection process

We begin the work by selecting a location. At this stage, it is important to take into account not only the dimensions of the car and the mounting method, but also installation recommendations. Running lights must be located at a height of 350 mm to 1500 mm from the road surface. The minimum height is considered to be 250 mm, but if the car is operated with a load, the body will lower. This point must be taken into account. Depending on what type of vehicle the DRLs are installed on, the optimal height parameter can range from 400 mm to 800 mm.

The DRL kit, depending on the specific model of the device, consists of LEDs, wires, mounting brackets, instructions and a control unit

The next stage is the installation of running lights. When purchasing equipment, the kit must include everything you need: LEDs, wires, instructions and other materials. When installing the DRL into the radiator grille, it will need to be removed. The place where the bracket will be mounted must be washed and degreased. Then double-sided tape is glued, the shape of which corresponds to the shape of the staple. After removing the protective layer, a bracket is attached to the tape. Before the clamp is fixed, stretch the wire that comes from the body. Experts recommend making the fastening more reliable and not relying only on tape. In this case, holes are drilled and fastening is done using self-tapping screws. Even when mounted with tape, they are fixed with self-tapping screws.

One of the popular places for installing DRLs is the radiator grille

The next step is to install the control unit. It is best to place the unit near the battery, but away from the engine to avoid overheating. Since the case is sealed and waterproof, there is no need to take additional protective measures. The unit is connected according to the standard scheme:

  • The red wire is connected to the “+”, the black wire to the “-” battery.
  • The orange wire should be connected to the low beam headlights or headlights. The purpose of the orange wire is to turn off the DRLs when the headlights are turned on. If you do not connect this wire, the LEDs will shine too brightly and blind oncoming drivers.
  • When the head optics are turned off, the LEDs should glow brightly.
  • The lights are connected to the unit using an appropriate cable using a detachable connection.

Standard connection of DRLs to the battery terminals, which is the most reliable power supply option

After the work has been done, it is necessary to check whether everything was done correctly. When the engine starts, the DRLs should light up, when the headlights are turned on, they should dim, and when the engine is turned off, they should go out completely. If the LEDs glow for about 20 seconds after turning off the engine, then this is considered normal. After you have checked and ensured that the system is working correctly, attach the central module and fix the LED units. To do this, they are inserted and snapped into the mounting bracket.

Next, the wiring is carefully laid under the hood and secured with plastic ties. Important: Do not attach wires to the fuel line, pressure hoses and radiator pipe. Upon completion of all operations, the grille is installed in place. The option with a control unit was discussed above. If there is none, then you will need to install a relay along the low beam circuit in accordance with the diagrams above.

The DRL control unit is located near the battery, but away from the engine to avoid overheating

DIY control unit

If you are good at electrical engineering, then why not assemble the DRL unit yourself. The principle of operation of such a unit is that it receives voltage when the ignition is turned on, and it determines the operation of the engine by the pulse frequency on the ignition coil. If the pulse presence time is more than 5 s, the DRL is automatically turned on. If there are no pulses within the specified time, the lighting will not turn on. In addition, the unit turns off the LEDs when the headlights are turned on.

It is connected as follows:

  • power is taken from any point where it is present when the ignition is turned on;
  • to count pulses, the connection is made to the ignition coil;
  • the signal to turn on the main lighting is taken from the point at which 12 V appears when the head light is turned on;
  • the output of the device uses an automotive relay with a current consumption of no more than 200 mA at a voltage of 12 V, while the switched current should be 30–40 A;
  • We connect the negative wire to ground.

With sufficient knowledge in the field of electronics, you can assemble the DRL control unit circuit with your own hands

Connecting DRL via generator

Let's look at how you can power daytime running lights from a generator using a standard automotive relay (5 contacts). The connection process is as follows:

  • The 30th relay contact is connected to terminal D of the generator;
  • The 80th is connected to the “+” of the dimensions;
  • 87th - connects to “+” LED blocks;
  • 86th - body weight.

In addition to the relay, the circuit involves the use of a button, which must be connected to the circuit between the 30th contact of the relay and the generator. As a result, the device will work as follows:

  • When the engine starts, “+” goes from the generator through the button to the 30th relay contact. Next, current flows to the “+” contacts of the daytime running lights, which causes the LEDs to light up.
  • When the side lights are turned on, voltage occurs between the relay contacts (85 and 86), the coil is activated and the contacts (30 and 87) are closed. There is no voltage at pin 87 and the DRLs turn off.

Installation and connection to standard headlights

Daytime running lights can be built into standard optics, for example, in PTF. To do this, you only need to modify the fog lights so that they turn on properly, while the fog lights themselves will still work. To implement the plan, you will need two relays with 4 and 5 contacts. The connection is made as follows:

  • 85 contact of the first relay is connected to ground;
  • Contact 86 goes to the “+” side lights or low beam;
  • Contact 30 is connected to 87 of the second relay;
  • from pin 87 there is a connection to the “+” output of the headlights, while the PTF connection remains intact;
  • Contact 86 of the second relay is connected to the “+” of the generator;
  • Contact 30 of the second relay is connected with a wire to the “+” battery through a fuse;
  • Contact 85 of the second relay is connected to ground.

It is worth noting that when connecting pin 86 of the second relay to the generator, the DRL will work as soon as the engine starts. If the connection is made through the ignition switch, the LEDs will light up after the ignition is turned on. Both options will be correct, and the choice is yours.

As you can understand, connecting DRLs is possible in different ways. In this case, either a relay or a special lighting system control unit can be used. Which option to give preference to, everyone chooses independently. The above described not only what daytime running lights are intended for, but also possible installation methods and connection diagrams. As a result, equipping your car with such lighting will not be difficult.

Installing daytime running lights on a car is not a complicated procedure and, if necessary, anyone can do it. The main thing is to familiarize yourself with possible connection diagrams, installation locations and perform careful installation, adhering to certain rules and recommendations.

Quite relevant among car enthusiasts. Many drivers assemble these systems with their own hands to save money. There are many such homemade options that are more tuning elements than a functional solution. These products will not bring any benefit, and sometimes they can cause harm. Such lights are often made from any available materials. You can also find many models from China on the market.

Many still believe in the power of the latest technologies and, due to poor orientation in these technologies, fall for the marketing tricks of the Chinese brothers who indicate higher characteristics than they actually are. It’s worth finding out how to choose running lights for a car, which models are considered the best and what car owners write about them. The topic of installation and connection is also very important.

Functions of daytime running lights

DRLs are designed to indicate a car on the road during the day.

There is a regulation that states that the glow should be at an angle of 30 degrees, where 10 should be above the horizontal, and another 20 below. According to the same regulations, the illuminated area should be about 40 cm 2 - this will help avoid purchasing light sources that are not very effective. Often these are models with spot light.

Those who know how to choose purchase equipment, the light of which is noticeable from a distance of up to 200 m, even on a clear and sunny day. DRLs, unlike car optics, have a smaller beam angle. According to their tasks, these light sources should create the effect of a lantern that shines into a person’s eyes from a great distance.

Types of daytime running lights

In different countries, the types of these lighting devices are understood completely differently. This may well be the low beam, which turns on when the engine starts. To reduce the intensity of the glow, it operates at a lower voltage.

There are also front emitters or turn lamps that are independent of the vehicle's electronics and operate continuously. But this confuses other drivers and can lead to an accident.

In Russia, since November 20, 2010, the traffic rules indicate the need to use DRLs at any time of the day or night and on any roads. Anything can be used as running lights, including low beams or fog lights.

By the way, the latter perfectly illuminate the roadside. Their light is quite bright, and a car with them becomes more visible on the road in any conditions. But they also have a serious drawback. may blind other road users.

In Canada and the USA, high beams are allowed to be used as running lights, but dimmed. Some manufacturers specifically install low-pressure high beam optics.

Running lights are primarily about traffic safety, so you should not skimp on this equipment or create a ridiculous design with your own hands. If you know how to choose the right daytime running lights, you can purchase an inexpensive and effective set.

Choosing LED lights

These DRLs are a very effective way of identifying a vehicle on the road. This is a spectacular tuning, and also an opportunity to avoid fines. Today, DRLs are a completely relevant standard of passive safety. Statistics show that with their implementation, the rate of accidents on the country's roads has significantly decreased.

For those who do not know how to choose LED daytime running lights, preference should be given to models where the light is stable, bright and powerful enough. But first things first.

Why LEDs? Because their brightness is much higher than ordinary daylight. LED kits are in great demand today. They are noticeable under any conditions, and even in the brightest sun.

For those who do not know how to choose running lights for a car, it is worth saying that the blocks have certain characteristics. It is on them that the choice should be based. Below we will look at the main characteristics of DRL units.

Shape, size, design

So, one of the characteristics is shape and size. Navigation light kits can have different parameters and look like two replaceable or non-replaceable components. As for the design, it all depends on the designers.

Modern models can be not only classic, but also curved, triangular or any other. The main criterion in choosing the shape and size is the bumper and its design features. The location where the DRLs will be installed is also important.

Number of LEDs

Often the system consists of two blocks. Each of them may contain a certain number of diodes. This amount affects the brightness of the glow, as well as the appearance. Some models may have from 1 to 12 diodes per block. In the standard version, 5 diodes are available, but this solution is not suitable for all car models and brands.

Diode placement

LEDs can be installed at the top, bottom or in the middle. On most models, manufacturers use the latter option, but there are also non-standard devices on sale.

Luminous flux strength

For those who do not know how to choose running lights for a car, it is worth saying that when choosing, it is important to maintain a balance between day and night.

If the LED is bright enough, then during the day it will be able to increase the visibility of the DRLs; at night, the bright element will blind the driver. Today, most models begin to use special microcontrollers that regulate brightness.

Types of LED DRLs

Can be divided into universal and standard. The first ones are created for most car models and brands. These systems are quite unpretentious, and even a child can install them. For those who don’t know how to choose running lights for a car, this is a good option.

Standard solutions are specially created for a specific make and model of car. Both the first and second types are produced by several world-famous brands. Thanks to this, you can choose the right set for any budget without any problems. There is another classification - according to it, running lights are divided into external solutions and those mounted directly into the head optics.

So, external ones are installed in a separate housing. Their main advantage is simpler installation and low price. Self-installation and connection is also possible. But they are very vulnerable to various mechanical damage and do not have a very remarkable appearance.

The second option makes it possible to use fairly powerful light sources, but at the same time completely preserve the design of the car that was developed at the factory. Installation of these solutions requires a specialist to comply with some important rules, as well as time and money.

Advantages and disadvantages of LED running lights

Among the advantages of such solutions are an increase in the level of safety on the roadway and a significant reduction in accident rates. Also, these kits have minimal energy consumption. The diodes have a long service life and wear on the system is almost zero.

Daytime running lights and an auto-on controller make the driver's life much easier - absolutely no intervention is required from the car owner.

There are many models on sale of different shapes, sizes, characteristics that are suitable for almost any conditions. Installation of the systems is simple. DRLs require virtually no maintenance, and the light does not blind drivers.

Among the disadvantages is the cost, because it is simply impossible to purchase a quality product cheaply. Reliable, durable and high-quality kits require investment. However, such investments will quickly pay off, because the life of the low beam lamps will be preserved.

Another drawback is that some car models do not have connectors. However, this problem can be solved with minimal effort. You can install running lights on your car yourself. The connection diagram is very simple and clear.

Market Review

What are they, good and best DRLs? Do they even exist? Let's try to find out. Let's start with Chinese brands. So, these lights have already gone from novelty to commonplace. Some car enthusiasts prefer Chinese models, others buy expensive products from Hella or Philips. There is an opinion that everything made in China is nonsense. It's not like that at all. There are also worthy and honest manufacturers among the Chinese.

Which running lights to choose for a car?

Often, car enthusiasts are offered "eagle" or something similar. At first glance, it may seem that these are the best solutions. But most examples are distinguished by terrible wiring and low-quality aluminum housing. The trouble with such designs is the lack of heat removal. As a result, the diodes “degrade” If you need just such lights, then you should buy models from Hella. They are the best. They are expensive, but worth it.

There are also running lights on a flexible strip. These devices are most often made by the Chinese. They cannot be called the best. And they are frankly weak as navigation lights. There are no aluminum boards or even radiators. The advantage is that they are sealed, but they are only suitable for Hella, which has already begun to develop similar headlights - it is worth waiting for the release of a high-quality model.

They also offer running lights in plastic glass housings. Everything here is very ambiguous. You can buy a good model or run into a fake. And now this is not only about Chinese products, but also about well-known manufacturers. The Philips running lights of the first generation had excellent characteristics, but due to overheating and poor heat dissipation, the plastic glass simply melted.

Lights are also sold in housings with lensed glass. This solution is the most preferable. If someone doesn’t know which daytime running lights are best to choose for a car, then this is the best choice. Manufacturers include Philips, Osram and others. There is both glass and aluminum, and this is the best combination.

LED plate-shaped DRLs are something to avoid. They are only suitable as a backlight. There is no protection from dust, liquids, or radiator. Service life - 3 months with intensive use.

The lights that can be installed in fog lights are the best they offer. There is a 10 W LED, linted glass, an aluminum body and universal mounts.

The best DRL running lights: review and reviews

This review should start with brands from the Middle Kingdom, or more precisely, from Aliexpress. There are terrible kits on the market, but there are also good, if not the best, DRL models. Good Chinese lights won't come cheap.

Golden DRL Road type 2015

These are some of the best running lights from the brothers from the Middle Kingdom. Model from 2015. The body is made of aluminum. The manufacturer claims that this solution can be used as a fog lamp, but this is not the case.

There are practically no downsides to this DRL. The power of each block is 10 W.

There are two modifications in color temperature. This is a warm white glow of 3000 K and a cool white glow of 3000 K. The device has excellent heat dissipation. The brightness of the stream is 980 lm.

The model is preferred, but it may not fit all models. As for the reviews, they say that the car with them is designated excellently. The glow is visible already from a distance of 180 meters. The opening angle complies with domestic regulations. The price is 700 rubles per block.

Philips Daylight 9

This solution is one of the best, but from a global brand. The model has all the necessary characteristics. It combines good design and excellent visibility. This model can be installed on most cars.

The blocks use 9 diodes. Together with the latest lensed optics, the illumination angle of the road is quite large. Installation is very simple. Special latches will prevent the possibility of module theft.

The modules are equipped with electronics that are compatible with most types of transport, including electric cars. The body is traditionally made of aluminum, and the lenses are carefully polished. Car owners who use such products say that the light is very bright and the body does not heat up at all. Price - from 3500 to 5000 rubles. Now it’s clear how to choose DRLs. Running lights and low beam are a necessary part of any car, because safety depends on it.

So, we found out the car running lights, which ones are better to choose and how much they cost.
