What oil is better to fill in a worm gearbox. Oils for lubricating gearboxes. Analysis of harmful factors and their impact on the rear axle of the car

Friction is a prerequisite for the operation of machine assemblies and mechanisms. But it usually also has a negative side. The work expended to overcome friction leads to wear of rubbing parts, their heating, which causes a decrease in the efficiency of the mechanism.

And maybe that's why, since time immemorial, a person has been constantly struggling with friction. The papyri records of the ancient Egyptians mention olive oil as a lubricant in the construction of the pyramids. The axles of chariots and the rubbing parts of primitive looms were smeared with animal fat. And only in the 15th century, the Italian scientist and artist Leonardo da Vinci was the first to try to investigate the laws of friction.

Today, we cannot imagine the operation of any mechanism without such an important element as lubrication. The lubricant must reduce the friction force and meet the technical operating conditions of the unit. Lubricants are divided into liquid, plastic and solid. Liquid transmission oils are used in gear and worm gear units to protect against premature wear of parts, remove heat from the surface and reduce noise. Depending on the properties of the oil, mechanisms can be operated at temperatures from -60 to +150 degrees.

Modern gearmotors use different grades of oils. Although the most widely used industrial oils. The specific load acting in the mechanism and the speed of rotation of the gears are the two important parameters that are guided by when choosing oils for geared motors. Depending on this, there is a criterion for the selection of the desired lubricated material.

Today, the range of gear oils for gearmotors is very large. They can be either mineral, consisting of petroleum distillation products, or synthetic, vegetable or mixed. But the main and most important indicator of any oil is its viscosity and lubricity. Viscosity provides a constant presence of lubricant between the rubbing parts and its thickness, and the presence of additives prevents premature wear.

In worm gear motors, unlike gear motors, more viscous oils are used, which contributes to an increase in seizing resistance. Lubrication occurs by dipping the worm in oil. Depending on the design of the gearbox, filling with grease is carried out with a syringe through a special hole or filled up to the level of the control plug.

Recently, synthetic oils have become popular. They have higher stability during temperature changes, resistance to abrasion. And all this allows you to increase the intervals between oil changes.

To improve the operational reliability of a gearmotor, one must not forget that the oil poured into it is an important element and has a significant impact on the operation of the mechanism. After all, it’s not for nothing that they say: if you don’t anoint, you won’t go.

The main task of the oil in the gearbox is to minimize the wear of the gears, in other words, to increase their service life. The low quality of lubricants, as well as untimely replacement, adversely affects the condition of the parts.

The replacement frequency is on average 50 thousand kilometers for cars with a manual transmission, and 30 thousand for an automatic one.

More often it is necessary to change the oil on cars that operate in difficult conditions, these include:

 • Off-road driving;
 • Constant maximum load of the vehicle;
 • Frequent towing of cars or trailers.

In a new car, it is recommended to replace after the first 2-3 thousand mileage. The fact is that at the initial stage of work, new units undergo the so-called "lapping", which is characterized by increased formation of wear products.

Many car owners change the gearbox oil at the same time as the manual transmission, since both components use transmission fluid.

Be sure to check the level and condition of the oil in the gearboxes after buying a car in the secondary market. Usually, before selling, if owners change lubricants, then only in those places where they can be easily checked. Gearboxes are not one of them.

Checking the level and condition of the oil in the gearbox

The level and condition of the oil in the gearbox is checked "for cold", when all the liquid is collected in the crankcase.

The oil should be at the level of the filler hole, 2-5 millimeters lower. To check, the filler plug is unscrewed and the level is recognized using a stick, wire, finger, or other improvised means. The condition can be checked here by taking a small amount of liquid with a syringe and tube.

You can also assess the condition of the lubricant by unscrewing the drain plug for a few seconds. Pre-tighten the filler, so the oil will flow much more slowly. If the car has stood for several hours before this, all foreign particles will settle in the crankcase, and you will get a clearer idea of the condition of the oil.

The presence of metal particles in the mining indicates that the gearbox components have a high degree of wear, and serious repairs and replacement of parts may soon be needed.

What and how much to pour

It is best to fill the gearbox with gear oil recommended by the manufacturer. The information is indicated in the technical documentation, and it is very important to focus on compliance with the class according to the API.

Almost all modern automakers require the use of at least GL-4 and GL-5 oils in their transmissions, gearboxes and transfer cases, which contain extreme pressure and other additives and are adapted to work in the most difficult conditions.

If you do not know what kind of oil and how much is poured into the gearbox of your machine, look for it in the table. We have collected information on tolerances for various vehicles from a variety of available sources.

If the car has 2 or 3 bridges, then the total amount of liquid is indicated.

Change of oil

Replacement is best done after a short trip (5-10 kilometers). This will allow the oil in the gearbox to warm up and become less viscous.

The car must be in a horizontal position, it is most convenient to work in a viewing hole, on a flyover or using a lift. This will make it easier to get to the gearbox. Use a wire brush to clean the surface around the filler and drain holes.

It will not be superfluous to pay attention to the condition of the oil seals, when worn, oil can flow out of the gearbox. If smudges are visible in the area of the seals, it is also better to change them immediately.

To lubricate gearing and bearings in gearboxes, various types of oils can be used: industrial, turbine, aviation, cylindrical, automotive, motor, as well as oils with additives.

Industrial oils have found wide application in gearboxes. The numbers in the designation of the brand of oil indicate the average viscosity at a temperature of 50 or * 100 ° C.

Along with viscosity, an important indicator of the physicochemical properties of oils is the flash point and pour point.

In high-speed gearboxes, especially those driven by steam turbines, in gearboxes of turboblowers, turbocompressors and other similar machines, turbine oils are used to lubricate gears and bearings, turbine oil 57 (turbo-gear) is especially widely used.

Turbine oils undergo a deeper purification compared to industrial oils and have the following qualities: high resistance to the oxidizing action of air at elevated temperatures; high dimulsifying ability to quickly and completely separate from water entering the lubrication system; low initial acidity and ash content. As a result, turbine oils are more often used in circulating lubrication systems. With high stability, they provide the possibility of long-term operation without replacement.

Aviation oils have high viscosity and lubricity, and are resistant to high temperatures. They are suitable for transmission lubrication both by splashing and from centralized stations.

Automotive, transmission, motor and cylinder oils have a high viscosity, high flash point, some of them have a low pour point, and are used to lubricate gearboxes of low circumferential speed.

Oils for industrial equipment are used to lubricate large gearboxes in the metallurgical and mining industries with gearing modules from 15 to 50, operating at speeds from 1 to 8 m / s. oils P-8p, PS-28 are heated to a temperature of 20 ... 25 ° C.

Recently, grades of industrial mineral oils with additives have been developed. Thanks to the rational percentage of additives, antiwear, extreme pressure, antioxidant, anticorrosion and other properties are improved.

Synthetic oils of medium viscosity have a low pour point and can be used when gears operate in low-temperature conditions.

Greases in gearboxes are used to lubricate rolling bearings when splashing oil is not sufficient for lubrication. This occurs in multi-stage gearboxes when lubricating the bearings of low-speed shafts. Greases can be divided into two groups - lubricating and embedded.

Bleeding lubricants are used in centralized piping systems to lubrication points, as they have the least resistance.

Grease Uniol-2 is recommended for centralized supply systems. They have a temperature range of operation in friction units from -30 to +120°C and are characterized by higher performance properties compared to IP1 grease.

Plastic grease Litol-24 and its substitute ESH-176 are recommended as embedded lubricants and can work without replacement and additives for up to 2 years at bearing temperatures from -40 to +100°C.

The choice of grade and viscosity of the oil An increase in the viscosity of the oil favorably affects the increase in the surface stability of the tooth material. Therefore, it is preferable to use more viscous grades of oils. A wide range of liquid oils are used to lubricate the gearing and bearings of gearboxes, depending on operating conditions and peripheral speed.

Viscosity-temperature characteristics of oils. Preliminary selection of the type of oil for lubricating the gearing of helical and bevel gears, depending on the peripheral speed in the gearing and the ambient temperature, can be performed according to the graphs.

For multi-stage gearboxes, medium viscosity oil is used, which is determined according to the schedule for each gear stage. The viscosity of the oil for gears operating in reverse should be 10-15% higher than that found.

More precisely, the choice of oil type is carried out according to the ambient temperature in the gearbox.

Many mineral oils in reference materials have a viscosity specification at 50°C.

Any car is equipped with several gearboxes. And they, like any other components, require timely maintenance and high-quality lubrication. Depending on the type of mechanism, certain types of lubricant are also used. Consider the two most popular of all produced.

Mobilgear XP 680

Special oil designed to improve the operation of gearbox parts, as well as increase its service life. Its unique composition prevents increased wear of parts, maintains tightness, prevents corrosion, and is highly resistant to temperature extremes. Provides reliable protection of bearings, preserves the sealing material, allows the gearbox to develop maximum power.

The Mobilgear 600 XP 680 line is of high quality and is considered the best among Mobil industrial lubricants. The micropitting included in the composition prevents premature wear of the elements. Detergent additives help keep the elements perfectly clean.

Oils of this series have a large number of advantages and a number of features. They reduce operating costs, increase productivity, extend the working life of the machine. Remove harmful deposits, prevent the appearance of sludge.

 • Protects the gear mechanism from rust.
 • Prevent corrosion.
 • Prevent clogging of filters.

Excellent extreme pressure properties and heavy load capability make it suitable for use in any enclosed gearbox where circulating lubrication is used.

The Mobilgear 600 XP 680 Series greases are designed to meet the latest requirements in industrial gears in terms of quality. They reliably protect the gear mechanism in the most extreme conditions, prevent wear of the toothed gear at the very beginning of work.

 • Spurs;
 • conical;
 • Cylindrical;
 • Kosozubykh.

Fluid can be poured into a gearbox equipped with a spray system. It is able to work normally at a temperature of about 100 degrees. These products are especially effective in gearboxes subjected to constant shock loads.

Such oil has also found application in marine vessels. It lubricates gears very well. In addition, it is used for various types of bearings operating at different speeds.

Special applications: conveyor gearboxes, dryers and agitators; extruders, mixers, fans, as well as shredders, presses and filters.

TNK Reducer CLP 680

The latest gear oil, perfectly replacing imported analogues. The composition includes mineral hydrotreated substances together with a unique package of additives. As a result, the properties of the lubricant have acquired certain positive qualities:

 • Prevention of oxidative and corrosive processes.
 • Increased wear resistance of parts.
 • Does not allow the appearance of scuffs.
 • The quality meets the requirements of the world standard DIN 51517.

It is intended for gears used in the latest industrial equipment of both domestic and foreign production, automatic presses, and hot stamping equipment. And also in helical gears and mechanical drives operating under high pressure.

Due to the large number of unique high-performance additives TNK CLP 680 Reducer differs from other gear oils in its high functionality.

A special high-performance demulsifying agent included in the additive package helps to increase the life of mechanisms operating in high humidity conditions. It reliably protects the parts if circumstances arise in which water can accidentally enter the oil.

Almost any modern mechanism needs high-quality lubrication. It is the lubricant that allows you to significantly increase the resource of the mechanism, reduce the noise load during operation, and also remove heat efficiently.

Gearmotors can also be attributed to such mechanisms. Even in ancient Egypt, vegetable oil was used in chariots to ensure a smooth ride. Note that natural oils have been used for a long time, until Leonardo da Vinci proposed an alternative.

The merit of the great inventor is the study of the laws of friction. Based on them, it turned out to compile a list of requirements for oils that must be used in mechanisms of this kind:

 • sufficient level of viscosity;
 • optimal temperature range;
 • high lubricity.

It is the viscosity that is maintained over the entire temperature range that allows you to keep the mechanism safe and sound. Transmission oils are often used in gearboxes.

They are filled to the level of the cork and operated for a set period of time. However, industrial oils can be used with the same success. Their technical characteristics are in no way inferior.

Mineral oils are made directly from petroleum. The natural product was highly rated until synthetic counterparts appeared, with higher technical characteristics. In particular, they can be used for a longer time, as they are able to retain their main properties due to additives. Consequently, the interval between maintenance of the gearmotor is increased.

It is hardly worth saying that the design of gearboxes can be different. For example, a worm gear motor requires more lubricant. In particular, it is required directly for the worm.

As a rule, during maintenance, the worm is completely dipped in oil and put in place (also already lubricated). However, there are designs in which oil can be drained and pumped.

Injection is carried out using a large syringe under pressure.

Monitoring the properties of the oil inside the gearmotor is a guarantee of the safety of its performance.

The video demonstrates how to quickly and cleanly fill the gearbox with oil:
